MWHEELS RELEASES WHITE PAPER TO EDUCATE FLEET OPERATORS ON CV WHEEL SAFETY MWheels is continuing to educate commercial vehicle fleet operators on the importance of wheel safety with the launch of a white paper entitled, ‘Evaluating commercial vehicle wheel safety – how to keep safe and stay compliant’.

T

he report, which has been designed to further augment information which exists from leading industry bodies, gives an overview of the current landscape, a look at problem wheels and noncircumferential hubs, today’s legal implications should an accident occur and a comprehensive 10-point wheel checklist. It continues to outline three recommendations on how to keep a fleet safe including best servicing practices, traceability and procurement and choosing the correct wheel and fittings. The conclusion focuses on the EU Roadworthiness Act, which had to be adopted and published by Member States, including the UK, by 20 May 2017 and must be fully applied by 20 May 2018. The new law states ‘compatibility between parts and components, such as between wheels and wheel hubs, should be treated as a critical safety item and should be checked during roadworthiness testing’. Addition legislative text includes several visual wheel inspection prerequisites and also that ‘wheel size, technical design, compatibility or type not in accordance with the requirements [laid down by type-approval at first registration or first entry into service] and 4

affecting road safety’ will be classed as a major defect. It also brings into context a number of minimum essential requirements that need to be stipulated when purchasing wheels, and furthermore the key roles that will be played by fleet managers and product purchasers. MWheels has spearheaded the lauded CV wheel safety campaign for several years under the previous company name of Motor Wheel Service Distribution (MWSD). The business rebranded in May 2017. Kevin Ryan, Chief Technical Officer for MWheels, said: “With Europe-wide legislation due to come into force in 2018, it is becoming even more important to know whether commercial vehicle wheels are fit-for-purpose. “The white paper takes the unprecedented step of truly focusing on the wheels themselves, looking at all the key aspects from technical advice to purchasing to maintenance to end-of-life. “When read in conjunction

with other leading literature on ensuring the correct torque, walkaround checks and other essential operational steps we have ensured that fleet operators now have a comprehensive understanding of the wheel and its position as a safety critical item.” To download a copy of the white paper visit: https://www.mwheels. co.uk/downloads/evaluatingwheel-safety-white-paper/ MWheels is the new name for Motor Wheel Service Distribution (MWSD), which is one of Europe’s leading independent distributors of commercial vehicle wheels. PARTNERSHIP, COLLABORATION, AND TECHNOLOGY INVESTMENT CRUCIAL FOR GROWTH OPPORTUNITIES, FINDS FROST & SULLIVAN’S INDUSTRIAL AUTOMATION AND PROCESS CONTROL TEAM

T

he Internet of Things (IoT) and data analytics are transforming the manufacturing space; and data is the new currency. Currently, human intervention is needed for logical and reasonable decision making; however, with the rise of cognitive technologies, machines will be empowered to detect constantly changing manufacturing scenarios and respond in real time with minimum human intervention. To be successful, manufacturers need to invest in artificial intelligence (AI) technology to improve plant efficiency and productivity, and build partnerships and collaborations that drive data-driven intelligence. “The automotive industry will lead in terms of the adoption of cognitive technologies in manufacturing,” said Frost & Sullivan Industrial Automation & Process Control Senior Research Analyst Nandini Natarajan. “With vehicles turning autonomous, the industry’s focus will shift to technologies like machine vision and predictive analytics. These technologies will be widely used to predict dangers and prevent road accidents.” The dawn of artificial intelligence – foreseeing manufacturing in the cognitive era, part of Frost & Sullivan’s industrial automation and process control Growth Partnership subscription, finds that the development of smart and safe robots using machine learning techniques will continue to remain a prime area of focus for cognitive factories. The global industrial robotics market is expected to double in and value to reach $70.26 billion by 2023, growing 10

HOWARD TENENS ORDER ANOTHER FLEET OF FLEXI TRUCKS Howard Tenens, one of the UK’s largest privately owned logistics companies, has once again invested in articulated forklift technology from Narrow Aisle Ltd.

A

total of 9 Flexi HiMAX trucks have been ordered for use at Howard Tenens’ facilities at Ashby de la Zouch and Sharpness. Flexi trucks have played a key role in ensuring Howard Tenens’ intralogistics processes operate at optimum efficiency for more than 10 years and this latest investment is part of an ongoing programme that has seen the company commit some £42m to the development of its property portfolio, logistics contracts and systems solutions as well as employee training, in the last three years. Mike Jones, General Manager at Howard Tenens Sharpness, commented: “We have been working with Narrow Aisle for over a decade. They were able to demonstrate flexibility within the 3-year contract that allows us to tender competitively for new business and, in turn, a significant saving was made by trading in older trucks.” Narrow Aisle’s sales and marketing director, John Maguire, commented: “Howard Tenens has long realised the space and throughput efficiency benefits that Flexi articulated truck technology brings and we are delighted to be entering the second decade of our relationship with them. “The latest additions to Howard Tenens fleet – the Flexi AC HiMAX – offer the perfect solution for high bay warehouses where fast throughput capability and narrow aisle storage density are required.” The Flexi HiMAX allows pallet loads to be stacked over 12 metres high and its HiVIS lift mast and specially developed integrated tilting and side shifting fork carriage eliminates mast deflection at the highest lift heights – making pallet movement hugely efficient. The trucks’ triplex free lift mast offers excellent forward visibility and, when retrieving and putting away pallet loads at the highest level, a high definition LCD CCTV system ensures Howard Tenens’ operators have a clear view.

Multi-shift availability is achieved thanks to Narrow Aisle’s simple cassette battery changing and 6.5 hour charging technology that ensures the trucks are available around the clock if required. The trucks have been provided on an inclusive contract rental package that means all planned maintenance, safety inspections and repairs are included in one fixed monthly rental charge. www.flexi.co.uk

ECOCEM CAPITALISE ON LONDON MARKET WITH LAUNCH OF SECOND IMPORT TERMINAL

Ecocem Ireland has upped its export capacity with the launch of its second UK-based bulk import terminal at Sheerness in the Port of Medway.

T

he import terminal which represents a £2.5million investment has been developed in partnership with Peel Ports, to help Ireland’s premier manufacturer of high performance, low carbon cement capitalise on the potential to supply the London/ south east construction market. Ecocem Ireland are a subsidiary of Irish company Ecocem Materials, Europe’s largest independent manufacturer of high performance, low carbon cement. It’s first UK bulk import facility in Runcorn opened in early 2016 and the launch at Sheerness will allow it to supply a further 250,000 tonnes of low carbon cement alternative per annum. This is part of the overall Ecocem Materials Strategy to develop export markets from its existing facilities in Ireland, Holland and France. Micheál McKittrick, Managing Director of Ecocem Ireland commented: “Our second investment in the UK in a state-of-the-art import facility demonstrates to the market 14

Bulk Solids Today

the need for the low carbon cement alternative and the growing demand from the UK construction industry. “We have already engaged in long term agreements with major concrete manufacturers in the UK and will continue to build momentum in the coming months”. Ecocem’s cement is the Best Available Technology for minimising the environmental impact of concrete, whilst maximising its technical performance. This technology is used widely in Ireland and the UK in projects such as the AVIVA Stadium in Dublin and the Shard in London. Andrew Martin – Group Land & Property Directory of Peel Ports commented “We are delighted to be working with the Ecocem team to enable and support their entry into the UK market. “We have been able to provide a multi-site solution that will accelerate the delivery of product as close as possible to the areas of consumption. We wish Micheál and his team the

best of success for the future.” As the UK seeks to reduce its carbon footprint, coal fired power stations are either being shut down or switching to biomass fuel. The challenges facing the UK steel Industry have been well publicised (strong sterling, cheap Chinese imports, etc…) and have resulted in the closing of some factories and a sharp reduction in output from others. These two factors have resulted in shortages in the supply of alternative binders to the concrete industry, increasing costs and lowering performance. The UK concrete industry have long appreciated the technical superiority of using alternatives such as GGBS, and Ecocem are now in a very strong position to service this opportunity from the facilities in Runcorn and Sheerness. The demand for low carbon materials in Europe has never been stronger, reinforced by the historic international agreements at the recent COP 21. Ecocem’s ability to deliver a reduction of over 70% in the carbon footprint of concrete, the world’s most popular building material, means the future is bright for the Irish firm. www.ecocem.ie

GROWING REPUTATION OF HOSOKAWA’S AGROCHEMICAL AGGLOMERATES SYSTEM

D

elivering high speed, continuous production of agrochemicals with good flow properties, long shelf life and good dispersibility and wettability the Hosokawa Micron agglomerator/humidifier system is becoming increasingly popular with producers of agrochemicals. At the heart of the system is the Hosokawa Flexomix, mixer agglomerator a high speed, continuous instant mixing unit which ensures very even, homogenous humidification of the particles. Pesticides are produced either as dry agglomerates or as dry, extruded product, having the appearance of either small cylindrical shaped pellets or spheronised round particles. The agglomerates are produced by thoroughly mixing a micronized, powdery premix with a liquid binder, such that the particles will stick to each other to form larger particles. For both agglomeration and extrusion process, The Hosokawa Flexomix is suitable for agglomeration and extrusion production processes.

AGGLOMERATED PRODUCT:

In case of agglomeration, the homogeneous mixing in the Flexomix ensures efficient formation of agglomerates with uniform quality, resulting in a high process yield. These agglomerates are porous and slightly irregularly shaped ensuring a good wettability and dispersibility. The Flexomix has a self-cleaning mixing chamber, which minimizes adherence of moist product to the mixing chamber wall, allowing a relatively high liquid addition ratio as required. The agglomerates formed in the Flexomix fall from the Flexomix into a Fluidized Bed Dryer and are dried to the required final moisture content.

EXTRUDED PRODUCT:

In case of extrusion, the feed product is evenly humidified in a Flexomix prior to extrusion. This is carried out using a low-pressure extruder, such as a Bextruder, basket extruder which passes an extrudable mass through a perforated orifice plate. The low pressure in which this extrusion takes place ensures that the extrudates remain relatively porous, maintaining the required good dispersibility. A humidified feed product with very homogeneous moisture content is essential to achieve optimum extrusion results with a maximum yield and minimum of clogging of the extruder.

18

Bulk Solids Today

In new plants, the Flexomix is the equipment of choice for both a direct agglomeration process as well as the wetting / humidification step in case of an extrusion process to ensure a maximum extrusion performance. In a lot of cases, the installation of the Flexomix in existing plants to replace existing (less effective) agglomeration or humidification devices has also proven to be very successful to significantly increase the yield and reduce the down time due to e.g. clogging to a minimum. The Flexomix is used for this application by major water dispersible, granular crop protection agent producers, world wide. A TUG FOR ALL OCCASIONS Electric tug specialist refreshes range of all-terrain equipment

E

lectric tug specialist MasterMover is powering up its range of all-terrain load moving equipment with the new ATT400+, a powerful electric tug with a high performance hydraulic coupling. The ATT400+ allows plant engineers, maintenance staff and handling operators in industrial environments to move heavy loads of up to 5,000kg on castors or 40,000kg on rails. Due to the nature of industrial environments, plant staff are often required to handle heavy products or components across uneven or cluttered floor spaces. This poses a challenge for traditional load handling equipment, with operators often requiring the use of forklifts or cumbersome alternatives that reduce productivity and create safety risks. The ATT400+ electric tug allows pedestrian operators to effectively and efficiently handle heavy loads on all surfaces, with the tug’s specially designed hydraulic arm transferring the load’s weight onto the wheels. This, in addition to the redesigned body of the tug and punctureproof tyres, means that staff can handle up to five tonnes in any operating condition. “Many types of load handling equipment often struggle to get traction in industrial environments,” explained Andy Owen, managing director of MasterMover. “This is due to the abundance of dust, dirt and debris created during production. As such, plant 20

managers must consider more than just the load-bearing capacity of their handling equipment. “To address this, MasterMover has redesigned the body of the tug itself to generate more traction. The main wheel has been moved forward and is now reinforced by a smaller supporting wheel at the back, which provides better balance so that operators can keep loads level on uneven surfaces. “By making these tugs easier to operate, plant managers can minimise the amount of non-value added time in their plants to improve productivity. It also means that loads are handled in a much more controlled manner, which prevents the safety hazards associated with high speed obstacle collisions.” Other products in MasterMover’s all-terrain range of load handling equipment include the MasterPusher and ATP400 electric load pushers. These products are designed to push wheeled loads in rough conditions and are housed in FEA tested steel chasses. Every product in the range has a number of additional options available, including safety lights and wireless control handsets. VORTEX LOADING SPOUTS GAIN ATEX CERTIFICATION IN EUROPE

V

ortex, a solids and bulk handling components company, announces its Loading Solutions product line has gained Zone 20 (internal) and Zone 21 (external) ATEX certification in the European Union. Because ATEX certification is required for equipment sold through the European Union (EU), this certification allows Vortex to broaden its international reach and enter an established European market for loading spouts. As Zone 20 and Zone 21 are the highest ATEX ratings that can be achieved, Vortex Loading Solutions are compliant for use in even the most hazardous applications, making Vortex products a viable option for all industries. Established on March 29, 2014, ATEX Directive 2014/34/EU is a revised law requiring equipment manufactures to design and construct equipment in a way that ensures a static dissipative path for material flow, thus reducing the source of ignition for use of equipment in explosive environments. Complemented by ATEX Directive 99/92/EC, which is law enforced in the workplace, the purpose of the ATEX Directive is to ensure employee safety and protection when manufacturing in hazardous environments. The Notified Body sourced to assist Vortex in gaining certification was the UK-based firm, SGS Baseefa. A certification process which took nearly one year to complete, SGS Baseefa was responsible for reviewing drawings and product standards, and for performing material testing, to ensure the Loading Solutions product line is mechanically and electrically compliant with ATEX Directive guidelines. Vortex Loading Solutions are designed to capture fugitive dust, prevent material waste, ensure plant and environmental safety, and minimize maintenance and service expenses. Vortex loading spouts can also be designed for standard, abrasive and food-grade material handling, making them an ideal solution for any bulk solids application. Spout sleeves can be constructed from four material options – two of which have been ATEX-certified. Coupled with the spout’s four-cable pulley system and 10-year cable warranty, Vortex Loading Solutions are reliable for safety and functionality in any material handling application. Further, all Vortex products from the Quantum and Titan lines are also ATEX-certified, making Vortex one of the safest sourcing options for equipment used in hazardous manufacturing environments.

SEVERN TRENT INSTALLS RELIABLE OIL-FREE SCREW BLOWERS FROM ATLAS COPCO IN SIX WATER TREATMENT PLANTS Severn Trent Water has chosen to install reliable and energy efficient ZS oil-free rotary screw blowers from Atlas Copco at six of its water treatment plants in the UK. This forms part of a major infrastructure refurbishment programme, including upgrades to its Rapid Gravity Filters (RGF) processes installations that require low pressure air for sand de-scouring duties.

T

he latest phase of the project has seen ZS blowers installed at the Little Eaton Water Treatment Works in Derby, which supplies safe, clean drinking water to the growing community in the city’s North-West area. Over time, it became clear that the site’s RGF process required a significant overhaul in order to improve operational efficiency, which would require the replacement of its existing blower installation. Taking up less land than other treatment processes, a combination of Rapid Gravity Filters and disinfection has become the most widely used method of purifying a drinking water supply. The process involves water pre-treatment in flocculation tanks to bulk up impurities and particle size. Following this, the untreated water is passed through several layers of coarse grained sand and anthracite to trap all particulates. The saturated filters are then backwashed several times a day to clean the media with a combination of treated water and low pressure air to de-scour the sand filters. Such a continuous process requires a dependable, uninterrupted supply of oil-free compressed air at 0.5 bar and relies heavily on the efficiency of low pressure blowers to maintain the required flow rate and pressure. As one of the main contractors for Severn Trent’s infrastructure upgrade project, civil engineering company MWH Treatment Ltd took on responsibility for the entire Little Eaton refurbishment programme. When it came time to make a decision on replacing the site’s existing blowers, MWH turned to authorised Atlas Copco distributor Cooper Freer to specify, deliver and install

two ZS 75+VEA-C-600 low pressure blowers, together with all associated stainless steel pipework. The blowers were subsequently positioned on a high level external site adjacent to the RGF galleries. The ZS blower units comprise a complete, fully integrated package based on a simple internal principle: precision timing gears maintain minute clearances between two intermeshing dry screw elements that never touch. No lubrication is required in the compression space and special seals stop any rotor bearing oil

from entering the compression chamber. Intake air is compressed between the rotors and their housing and 100 per cent oil-free, pulsation-free air is delivered at an output rate of up to 3325 m3h dependent upon process demand. ZS rotary screw blowers are commonly available with integrated VSD control. However, the new blowers at Little Eaton were supplied as variable speed units linked to the plant’s own existing inverter control system. Commenting on the successful installation progress, MWH project manager Kelvin Smith said: “Atlas Copco’s distributor, Cooper Freer were very pro-active at the design phase in accommodating quite a few changes at an early point in the progress of this project. The blowers arrived on time and were successfully installed on the high ground level site. We found that they were always on hand to discuss any issue arising from design and installation and were very safety conscious during the construction stage resulting in a very successful project completion.” Stephen James, Severn Trent Water’s project manager for the upgrade at Little Eaton, stressed the importance of the ZS blowers in guaranteeing the supply of clean drinking water: “Not only do the blowers enable a smoother flow in the filter de-scouring process, they also provide the peace of mind in providing 100 per cent oil-free air to reduce the risk of contamination to the drinking water supply.” Severn Trent Water chose MWH as one of the design and construct contractors for its AMP6 framework. MWH will work alongside Severn Trent Water’s own staff to manage the operation, supporting the delivery of its programme of work throughout AMP6; which runs until March 2020. Apart from Little Eaton, Cooper Freer has installed four Atlas Copco 90 kW ZS variable speed blowers to replace all the existing lobe blower technology at Severn Trent Water’s Worcester treatment plant. OMAN DRYDOCK RECEIVES LARGEST VESSEL IN COMPANY HISTORY - SOHAR MAX Oman Drydock Company has taken delivery of the largest vessel in the company’s history - iron ore carrier Sohar Max - for a specialist dry docking project.

T

he $1.5billion drydock is based in the new mega city of Duqm, in the Governate of Al Wusta. It is currently delivering an 11-day maintenance project for the Oman Shipping Company (OSC) carrier. The Sohar Max is the biggest vessel in size to enter the dry dock since it opened in 2011, measuring 360 metres in length, 65 metres in width with a capacity of 400,000 tonnes. ODC Acting CEO Dr Ahmed Al Abri said the dry dock is also preparing for another high-profile project with Sohar Max sister-ship, and fellow iron ore giant Liwa Max in the coming months. “Maintenance work on the Sohar Max is now well underway and will completed to a tight time schedule,” he said. “It involves complex repair and maintenance work. Key areas of delivery include painting, replacement of consumable parts, repairing defective parts and carrying out other works related to technological aspects. “In the last six years we have formed a strong alliance with OSC which is one of the largest shipping companies in the Gulf. The Sohar Max is the latest in a series of successful projects delivered for OSC dating back to 2011, when we received the VLGC ‘Muscat’. This was followed by a collection of other OSC vessels including ‘Manah’, ‘Saham’, ‘Mirbat’, ‘Al A’mirat’ and Sumail. We are now also making preparations to accommodate bulk carrier Liwa Max, of similar dimensions to Sohar Max.” ODC is the largest ship repair yard in the Middle East. It can accommodate any size of vessel (see notes to editors 1) with one of the longest docks in the Middle East at 2.8km. Dr Al Abri said these facilities

combined with a solid commitment to delivering on cost, quality and time make the dry dock ideally suited to the world’s largest vessels. “In total we received more than 462 vessels since 2011,” he said. “We have developed a robust track record working on a broad range of projects from VLCCs to container vessels, RO-ROs, barges, LNG carriers, LPG carriers, chemical carriers and vehicle carriers. While initially largely focused on repair we are now very much geared up and actively seeking new build and conversion work. This follows successful projects including the Greek-owned Olympic Luck which ODC converted from an Oil Bulk Ore carrier to a Very Large Crude Carrier. “We currently employ a total number of 2000 workers from 10 different nations. This has risen consistently in line growth to ensure the right levels of skill and resource. However, it is the speed and efficiency of our service combined with our world class facilities and location which enables us to win work and crucially attract repeat business. We are perfectly positioned for the Asia to Europe shipping route as well as the East African and Indian off shore industries. Vessels do not have to greatly deviate their course helping to slash costs and the time required for dry docking. “The dry dock also benefits from a perfect climate for painting which few other yards can match as well as the largest sludge and slops terminal in the Middle East at 10,000 cubic metres.” For further details visit: www.omandrydock.com

REMOVING RESIDUE FROM BULK MIXERS – ENHANCED DRY CLEANING

W

hen mixing bulk solids, residues can pose the threat of cross contamination or introducing product impurities so what are the options for mixer cleaning if these threats are to be avoided. As rinsing mixer and screw with water and cleaning agents brings unwanted moisture into the system which can cause creation of lumps in the product, wet spots behind O-rings or gaskets and generate vast quantities of contaminated water or other cleaning fluids that have to be dealt with, here we consider the best dry cleaning approaches to minimise the propagation of bacteria. Stewart Bryan, Hosokawa Micron Ltd, suggests, ‘Let us firstly look at the options to reduce the cleaning effort required by reviewing the process design, the vessel used, material transfer steps and any liquid additions. It is often the case that original processes are simply repeated even though the products involved have changed thus generating your own problem. Often it is difficult to review the process without bias and you may find speaking with a powder processing specialist such as Hosokawa can help. Secondly look at the mixer design, what are the features that will aid dry cleaning regimes for minimising cross contamination’. • Conical mixer designs, with inclined surfaces and gravity discharge leave little opportunity for powders to form residues. In the case of the Hosokawa Vrieco Nauta Conical Mixer there are no horizontal or vertical partitions or sharp corners and as few joints, flanges and seals as possible come into contact with the product eliminating the potential to harbour residue. • For restriction free discharge a central bottom outlet offers best options for complete emptying. • In a conical screw mixer opt for open screw flights. • Powders simply slide off smooth surfaces without seams so a one part mixer is ideal for dry cleaning. With these and other sanitary design features only an extremely low amount of residue (<0.05%) remains when the Vrieco Nauta mixer is emptied, minimising the risk of subsequent batch contamination

COMMON DEPOSIT COLLECTION ZONES

Zone 1 is the surfaces above the product level of the filled mixer, mainly caused by dust, dispersed by filling. This can easily be blown away by compressed air. Zone 2 is the surface of the vessel below the filling level, in contact with the movement of powders. Addition of liquids to the mixture will increase adhesion to the mixer wall. Cleaning with a cloth may remove such residue. Zone 3 the mixing screw and in particular the underside of the blades can be difficult to clean without brushes and friction tools to break the residue from its bond with the blade. Whilst CIP dry cleaning of residues is both difficult and time and labour intensive Hosokawa Micron Ltd suggests a number of solutions to enhance the cleaning of conical mixers that can be applied to both dry bulk powder mixing and moist mixtures containing a small percentage of liquid.

ENHANCED MIXER DRY CLEANING

A large inspection door in the vessel wall creates an opening through which the operator can easily access all surfaces to be cleaned. Areas for special cleaning consideration include screw flights and the lower surface of the screw blade. The large opening also aids visibility of areas to be cleaned. The full and correct closure of this door is a significant safety factor when the mixer is in operation. A semi domed cover, welded to the cone, offering a large radius and no crevices in which bacteria might settle offers enhanced cleanability. Hosokawa’s Isem ball segment valve with its rounded interior surfaces reduces the possibility for material deposition to a minimum. An inspection port in the valve is available as standard. In case deposits have to be removed this can be done using special tools. ‘Of course there are many, mainly wet or sticky mixing applications where dry cleaning is not an option and wet cleaning is inevitable. In the case of the example, Vrieco Nauta mixer, there are enhanced wet CIP options that are more appropriate,’ explains Stewart Bryan. www.hosokawa.co.uk

PALLET+ TECHNOLOGY GIVES BULK PACKERS BIG TIME ADVANTAGE Pacepacker Services, PPMA 2017, Stand C50

R

eprogramming the way bulk pallets are stacked using the usual robot teach pendants can be a laborious, time consuming, trial and error process. At PPMA 2017, stand C50, automation specialist Pacepacker Services unveils its NEW Pallet+ technology, which, thanks to time saving features including offline programming, slashes set-up of a new bulk pallet stack layout from around one hour to several minutes. Live palletising time trails will demonstrate how to modify a stacking recipe using Pallet+ versus using a robot teach pendant. Thanks to graphical elements and value-entry boxes, the Pallet+ interface can be operated without users understanding complex programming language, cutting bulk palletising recipe programming times by up to 800%! “Pallet+ is especially beneficial when handling rigid boxes which are commonplace in the bulk sector. Compared to palletising sacks, with boxes there is very little stacking tolerance, 5mm in some instances,” reports Pacepacker’s Technical Director Richard Gladwin. Could this be the end of engineer programming visits? Pacepacker believes so, giving bulk packers more machine uptime, faster turnaround and greater production capacity. Compared to the previous steps of modifying a palletising stack format, which could involve multiple robot jogging and coordinated recording steps, Pallet+ users can perform programme changes on a control panel local to the machine or off-line via a separate computer. Pacepacker can even create new palletising recipes and email them to customers, or login remotely and upload. Pallet+ is being installed on all Pacepacker’s new robot palletising systems as standard. It can also be retrofitted to existing robots supplied by Pacepacker, including case loading, from all food and bulk sectors. Operation requires little or no programming knowledge, which given today’s in-house engineering skills shortages is proving a real benefit. As testimony, one longstanding customer is converting its entire robot programming systems after trialling Pallet+. 28

Bulk Solids Today

Ideal for manufacturers and contract packers reliant on machine uptime to meet contract delivery schedules, Pallet+ enables bulk manufacturers and packers to rapidly adjust to changing product formats, shapes and pack sizes, creating fast yet stable delivery pallets. It virtually eliminates any need for operatives to touch the robot pendant and cuts out all the time-consuming programming steps. Pallet+ will appear on a fully automated case erection, loading, closing and palletising line up, which forms the centrepiece of Pacepacker’s PPMA 2017 display. www.pacepacker.com

NEW MULTI-LANE METAL DETECTOR BEATS FOOD WASTE CHALLENGE

A

t PPMA 2017, stand A42, Fortress Technology will unveil how metal detection sensitivity accomplished by its multi-aperture innovation can deliver optimal food safety whilst helping to eradicate false product rejects. Factory food waste is a huge issue. Yet, choices about production equipment, including metal detection and other quality control, can impact the 1.9 million tonnes* wasted annually by the UK food supply chain. WRAP estimates 1.1 million tonnes of this is avoidable, valuing it at £1.9 billion and attributing almost 90% to manufacturing. Forming the centrepiece of the Fortress display is the first UK live demonstration of the company’s new wastereducing, triple-lane, multi-aperture metal detector. Rather than channelling multiple lanes through a single metal detector, one Stealth metal detector is mounted across three conveyor lines. Each conveyor has its own BRC-approved reject system. This puts a stop to an entire row of good product being rejected and wasted if a contaminated product is identified on one line. “In a 5-lane configuration this technically equates to an 400% reduction in false reject waste,” highlights Phil Brown, Fortress European Sales Director. Reliable industry estimates put the annual cost per production conveyor line of false rejects at up to £14,000, depending on the scale of the problem. Combining the physical waste with repeat machine stoppages, Phil asserts that this is a conservative figure. Having a dedicated aperture on each lane, measuring 175mmx75mm, also means it can detect even smaller metal particles, of all types, down 0.7 mm ferrous, 0.7 mm non ferrous and 1.4 mm stainless steel. What’s more, the smaller apertures cope better with orientation and product effect, again reducing the likelihood of false product rejects whilst safeguarding a food manufacturers brand reputation. Featuring Contact data software for remote interrogation, the multi-lane unit also optimises factory floor space. This was the case with a twin lane version recently installed by Dutch bakery Borgesius where the closeness of conveyors made it logistically impossible to insert two metal detectors. Inspecting 3,600 loaves p/h, Borgesius Plant Manager Mr. Boneschansker comments: “Our twin-lane metal detector enables us to meet the stringent retailer Codes of Practice throughout Europe and have proven reliable and easy to operate.” End-users can save up to 50% of the

space required by individual metal detectors, plus around 17% of the installation cost. With just one system to maintain and manage, longer term, the multiaperture device improves total cost of ownership (TCO) by over 65%, taking into account reduced maintenance and parts requirements. Alongside the triple-lane system, Fortress will showcase three other key applications on its PPMA stand. They include a Stealth pipeline metal detector equipped with new Halo2 automatic test technology, an incline feed gravity metal detector, plus a horizontal Interceptor conveyor system that uses simultaneous multi-frequency technology to optimise sensitivity and inspection performance on notoriously difficult wet and conductive products like meat, dairy, ready meal and bakery items. For a full demonstration, visit Fortress Technology, Stand A42. www.fortresstechnology.co.uk The triple lane configuration on show at PPMA features Contact data software and a mobile App for remote interrogation.

PACKAGING Omron’s Quattro – the world’s fastest and first 4 arm Delta robot will make its show debut at PPMA 2017

OMRON DEBUTS WORLD’S FASTEST AND FIRST 4 ARM DELTA ROBOT Stand B34, PPMA Total Show, NEC

W

ith a pick rate of 300 per minute, Omron will debut the world’s fastest and most flexible Delta pick and place robot on stand B34 at PPMA 2017. The only Delta on the market with four arms, the Omron Quattro also offers a larger working envelope and a degree of manipulation not achievable elsewhere. Furthermore, the Quattro is also the only Delta robot which is USDA certified and constructed with materials that are safe for primary food handling, making it more hygienicallyadvanced than existing robots on the market. The key to the advanced performance of the Quattro Delta robot is a unique, patented, four arm rotational platform, which offers significant advantages over traditional three arm Delta robots. The fourth arm allows the robot to reach up to 30% further than traditional designs, facilitating a larger operational area, including the ability to access wider conveyors. The extra arm also allows the robot to tilt, meaning the load can be placed at a different angle than it is picked – a real game changer for packaging and other automation applications. The powerful combination of speed, manipulation, reach and a 15kg payload will ensure the Omron Quattro Delta 30

is ideal for any general automation application. Dan Rossek, Omron Marketing Manager comments: “PPMA members go out of their way to exhibit the latest cutting-edge technology to attract UK brand owners from the food, pharma and FMCG industries. This year, Omron will debut the only 4 arm Delta robot in the world – the Quattro, which is also the fastest Delta robot on the market and the only system that’s USDA hygiene-certified. It’s a feat of engineering for all to see.” Complementing the Quattro Delta on stand B34, will be a preview of Omron’s futuristic OKAO software. The demonstration will show powerful gesture control over the production process, as well as how facial recognition can be used to unlock different levels of access to control functions and information. Omron will also demonstrate a new 4.0 ready visualization platform, giving a complete visual representation of critical machine and production data. Omron will display the Quattro Parallel Delta robot and smart factory with OKAO software and new visualization platform on stand B34 at the PPMA Total Show held at the NEC Birmingham 26-28 September 2017 - www.ppmashow. co.uk. www.industrial.omron.co.uk

PPMA SHOW 2017, JARSHIRE LTD/DOTEC BV, STAND B72

J

arshire Ltd, specialist supplier of converting, packaging and printing equipment, together with Dotec BV, manufacturer of reel and roll handling equipment, have high expectations for the show that has proved to be an effective platform for them in recent years. Highlighting the product display will be Dotec’s roll and reel handling equipment that has been recognised for its efficiency and operator safety. A gantry system will be operational with an RH90 tilt and turn roll handler together with a unique vacuum lifter/turner for boxes and bags. Jarshire will also be demonstrating the operatorfriendly Moviroll Roll/Reel pusher from Renova srl. With either the pneumatic or battery-operated versions, on a flat surface an operator can effortlessly manoeuvre both large and small cylindrical loads before placing them on a roll stand or shuttle. The pusher is therefore ideal for handling paper, tissue and converting rolls simply and safely. Information on other important products from the Jarshire portfolio will include: The advanced cutting technology of Espo knifeholders which facilitate functional in-line integration

to all existing winders, slitters, sheeters and web processing machines, whatever the substrate. Features include a quick and highly accurate positioning system, and reliable and operator-friendly operation for all styles of slitting, from shear, razor or crush cut. High quality steels are used in top and bottom blades to suit customers’ applications and provide a long life. Lightweight airshafts from Svecom Srl provide operator-friendly and efficient insertion and withdrawal of the shaft from the reels whilst speeding up production through quicker reel changes. The Svecom shaft will centre cores; run concentric and faster than competitive products; carry more reel weight; has greater gripping power and will cope with reused or worn cores. Last, but not least, to reduce waste where damaged cores are concerned, a pneumatically-operated Jarshire Reelsaver does just that. Its tapered jaws are inserted into old or damaged 3”, 6” or 8” ID cores and expanded to return the core to its original shape. Packaging material that once had to be put aside because of damage sustained during transit or on-site handling can now be back in the production stream within minutes. www.jarshire.co.uk
