Man Booker Prize
Milkman Anna Burns
This year's winner is a tale of gossip and hearsay, silence and deliberate deafness, where inaction brings enormous consequences. In her artistic, boundarypushing novel, Burns throws a challenge to the reader by stripping away names of people and place, leaving you to respond only to the situations and emotions presented, around themes of sexual encroachment. Brutal, honest and unsentimental, yet laced with caustic humour. Pb $29.99
The Life to Come Michelle de Kretser
This is the second Miles Franklin win for Michelle, following her 2013 win with Questions of Travel ($22.99). The 2018 winner is an episodic novel in five parts, with different characters to the fore, though the reader realises that one in particular is always there. Looping round Sydney, with diversions to Paris and connections to Sri Lanka, this is an elegant examination of modern life’s inability to create intimacy, despite all the ways we can connect technologically. Full of wise observations and arresting images, this masterful novel is a pleasure to read. Lindy Pb $32.99

Welcome to another Christmas & Summer Reading Guide from Abbey’s. It was 1968 when Abbey’s Bookshop first opened its doors, so we're now very proud to celebrate our 50th birthday. We would like to thank all the loyal customers who have supported Abbey’s through the years and hope you can visit our store - full to the brim as always with wonderful books - and view the collection of memorabilia on display until the end of the year. The Queen Victoria Building was home to Abbey’s Bookshop for 15 years - from 1968 to 1983 - when we were the last tenants to depart before the building was beautifully restored to its former glory. Since 1986 we’ve been at 131 York Street, directly across the road from the QVB, where we get to bask in the glow of its stunning façade.

Bridge of Clay Markus Zusak
From the author of The Book Thief ($19.99) comes this warm, rambling and very Australian tale. Set against the lives of five brothers and the loss, love and triumph that surround them, this story has a unique narrative flow that isn’t 'beginning to end', but rather 'thought to thought'. It isn’t in a rush to get anywhere; it’s a journey to be savoured as it moves through time and history to tell a story that begins in many places and ends with a boy, and a bridge. Megan Pb $32.99 Hb $39.99
Unsheltered Barbara Kingsolver
This parallel story tells of Willa in 2016 and Thatcher in 1871, linked by the same house they have lived in. Willa’s world is crumbling in equal proportions to the badly constructed house; Thatcher is also tasked with fixing its faults, while attempting to teach Darwinism in a doggedly religious town. Both are looking for security where it doesn’t exist, whether in systems or the abilities of others. Kingsolver deftly weaves the surprising similarities of their disparate lives into a clever and satisfying novel. Highly recommended! Lindy Pb $32.99
Two Old Men Dying Tom Keneally
Killing Commendatore Haruki Murakami
Learned Man is the child of humankind as we know it - of those who are thought to have travelled from the Rift Valley in Africa to ancient Australia. Shelby Apple is an acclaimed documentary-maker. After making films about Learned Man’s discovery - in Vietnam and back home in the Northern Territory - Shelby turns his sights on Eritrea. He thinks this embattled society might represent a new cognitive leap, one that will reconcile our tenderness and our savagery. In his latest novel, Keneally explores the story of modern Australians alongside the story of the First Man. Pb $32.99
The epic new novel from the bestselling author of 1Q84 ($19.99). A 30-something portrait painter in Tokyo is abandoned by his wife and finds himself holed up in the mountain home of a famous artist, Tomohiko Amada. When he discovers a strange painting in the attic, he unintentionally opens a circle of mysterious happenings. A tour de force of love and loneliness, war and art - and a loving homage to The Great Gatsby ($12.99). A stunning work of imagination. Hb $45
The bestselling novel in 1968
when Abbey's opened was John Updike's novel Couples - somewhat notorious at the time for its lyrical and explicit descriptions of sex within a circle of ten couples in "the post-pill paradise" of 1960s America.
The Budapest Job Alice Spigelman
Berta Isla Javier Marias
Oxford 1969. Tomas Nevinson, who has a remarkable gift for mimicry and languages, is reluctantly forced to join MI5/MI6. His wife Berta spends large periods of her life imagining where and what Tomas is doing. This is an unconventional espionage novel in that the narrative is mostly viewed through the wife’s eyes, rather than her husband’s. The author’s literary craft delivers a gripping and deeply felt story, taking the spy genre into a different place entirely. Greg Pb $32.99
A Well-Behaved Woman
Tom Gaspar accepts an architectural project at the behest of his powerful boss, who has taken an unusual personal interest in him. It's in Budapest in 1989 and communism is crumbling. Tom becomes obsessed with discovering what happened to his father in 1953, and finds himself entangled in a secret police operation. A fast-moving thriller about betrayal and the atrocities committed in the name of politics. Pb $29.99
The Butcherbird Stories A S Patric
Therese Anne Fowler
A collection of 11 elegantly wrought short stories, each of which sensitively examines a character’s interior landscape. Disconnection, anxiety, passion, longing and belief are relayed through moments in a life. Occasionally unnerving, sometimes bleak, this is a collection for all connoisseurs of the short story form, written by a master of the subtle observation.
Alva Smith was in reduced circumstances, but with impeccable lineage, when she married into extreme wealth. She lent her prestige to the nouveau riche Vanderbilts who were attempting to break into the top level of New York society. It took Alva a while, but she eventually scaled the heights, even marrying (some said, sold) her daughter to an English Duke. This fabulous book recreates that artificial world, where women were only meant to be ornaments, and the woman who refused to be one. A glittering and authentic-feeling novel that superbly captures Alva’s life and times! Lindy Pb $32.99

A century later, Broome schoolboy Dancer falls foul of the local bikie gang, and he and his father head up the Gibb River Road. In a maze of rugged ranges and remote communities, Dancer begins to unravel the truth behind the mysterious disappearance of Milly Rider, the mother he never knew. Marina, an academic living in Harlem, has a chance meeting with Constance and her son Gabriel, refugees from the Rwandan genocide. Marina gradually becomes drawn further into their lives, an entanglement that strains her relationship with her husband Jacob, who worries that her involvement may be doing more harm than good. Marina's drive to support Constance and Gabriel is shadowed by her own family history, especially her fraught relationship with her long-absent mother. With exquisitely controlled prose, this is a deeply compassionate novel about our need for safety and belonging, our need to feel at home. Gavin Pb $32.99

Pearl is a journalist relegated to the women’s pages after being snapped at a Vietnam protest meeting. Axel is a Swede employed to craft glass art for the Opera House. He’s obsessed with designer Jorn Utzon; Pearl is obsessed with finding her brothers. The two come together, keeping the secrets of their past, in a city on the cusp of great change. Set in Sydney in 1966, this engrossing novel is full of ideas; it’s about guilt, redemption, work, family, conscience and failure. Lindy Hb $35
This tale of gruelling colonial misadventure begins with a murder and an assumed identity. In 1797, a fishing boat from the isolated settlement of Sydney comes across three terribly injured shipwreck survivors on a beach down south. Nearing death, they have walked hundreds of miles and lost 14 companions along the way. Under questioning, however, their varying accounts of the ordeal are evasive. Serong's novel is a rich imagining of the wreck of the Sydney Cove, an actual trade ship that was ill-prepared for the violence of the southern seas. Craig Pb $29.99
Sleep of Memory Patrick Modiano
Modiano’s first book since his 2014 Nobel Prize revisits moments of his past to produce a spare and moving reflection on the destructive underside of love, the dreams and follies of youth, the vagaries of memory and the melancholy of loss. Writing from the perspective of an older man, the narrator relives a key period in his life, unearthing his troubled relationship with his parents, unorthodox childhood and the unsettled years of his youth. This is classic Modiano, with his signature mix of autobiography and invention to create his most intriguing and intimate book yet.
The Fallen Architect Charles Belfoure
Douglas Layton had a flourishing architectural practice until the collapse of a balcony in a music hall designed by him, killing many people. Outcast and haunted, upon his release from gaol he changes his identity and ends up working as a scenery painter. But the discovery of two carefully hidden bodies convinces him that his building was sabotaged, and he embarks on a quest to find the real culprit. An easy read that rolls along, full of fascinating period details. Lindy Pb $27.99

The Odyssey
Homer (Emily Wilson, Translator)
Found in Translation
The first great adventure story in the Western canon. This vivid new translation - the first by a woman - matches the number of lines in the Greek original, striding at Homer’s sprightly pace. Emily Wilson employs elemental, resonant language and a five-beat line to produce a translation with an enchanting "rhythm and rumble” that avoids proclaiming its own grandeur. An engrossing tale told in a compelling new voice that allows readers to luxuriate in Homer’s descriptions and similes, and thrill at the tension and excitement of his hero’s adventures.

The First Soldier Hitler as Military Leader Stephen Fritz
After Germany’s humiliating defeat in WWII, many German generals published memoirs claiming their country’s brilliant military leadership had been undermined by the Fuhrer’s erratic decision-making. Fritz upends this characterisation of Hitler as an ill-informed fantasist, portraying him as a competent military commander and strategist, and offering an eyeopening reappraisal of major events like the invasion of Russia and the battle for Normandy.

Fallout Conspiracy, Cover-up and the Deceitful Case for the Atom Bomb Peter Watson
Roosevelt and Churchill had the atomic bomb built, but excluded their Russian allies from the knowledge. Niels Bohr wanted them to share; Klaus Fuchs leaked the secrets to the Soviets. The Americans knew the research was compromised by Soviet spies, and the British knew the Germans didn’t have a nuclear program, but neither told the other, nor the scientists developing the bomb. This powerful book dismantles the conventional reasons for creating the world’s most destructive weapon, and examines the long-term consequences.

Kershaw follows on from To Hell and Back: Europe 1914-1949 (Pb $29.99). Since the overwhelming horrors of the first half of the 20th century, most of Europe has enjoyed peace and relative prosperity. Now a divided continent, Europe lived under the nuclear threat in a period intermittently fraught with anxiety; for much of this period, the US and the USSR effectively reduced Europeans to helpless figures whose fates were dictated to them by the Cold War. Political Correctness and the Rise of the Right
The Fifth Risk Undoing Democracy
Jeff Sparrow
Michael Lewis
The unlikely rise of Donald Trump exemplifies the political paradox of the 21st century. Sparrow excavates the development of a powerful new vocabulary against progressive causes. From the Days of Rage to Gamergate, from the New Left to the alt-right, he traces changing attitudes to democracy and trauma, symbolism and liberation, in an exhilarating history of ideas and movements. Challenging progressive and conservative orthodoxies alike, this is a bracing polemic and a persuasive case for a new kind of politics. Pb $29.99
Lewis’s brilliant narrative takes us into the engine rooms of a Trump government under attack by its own leaders. In Agriculture, the funding of vital programs like food stamps and school lunches is being slashed. Over at Energy, where international nuclear risk is managed, it’s not clear there will be enough inspectors to track and locate black market uranium before terrorists do. Lewis finds the linchpins of the system - those public servants whose knowledge, dedication and proactivity keep the machinery running - and asks what keeps them up at night... Hb $45

This impressive book sheds light on the years 1955-64 when they were the charismatic centre of a collection of writers and dreamers, including Leonard Cohen. With a trove of previously unpublished candid photographs and other primary material, this is an examination of the allure, reality and eventual dissolution of an intense dream. One of my favourite books this year! Lindy Pb $39.99

#2 Nevermoor Jessica Townsend
Scott Carey doesn’t look any different, and yet he’s been steadily losing weight. Even stranger, his weight is the same, regardless of whether he’s wearing clothes or not. He doesn’t want to be poked and prodded, he just wants someone else to know. This latest novel from the master storyteller is a riveting, eerie and moving story about a man whose mysterious affliction brings a small town together. A timely tale about finding common ground despite deep-rooted differences. Pb $29.99
Nevermoor ($16.99) won about 10 awards, but the most important one was a place in so many hearts. It was a very strong debut for a young Australian author. Think Alice in Wonderland meets Harry Potter with a pinch of darkness. Aimed mainly at a slightly younger audience than Harry Potter, yet great for readers of all ages. I’m more a fan of Grim Dark Fantasy, so if there’s not a bunch of (preferably drunk) dudes chopping stuff up with sharp things and swearing about it, I get a bit bored, but Nevermoor was so gently captivating and refreshingly charming, I accidentally read it twice. The first in a refreshingly different coming-of-age trilogy featuring a strong cast of relatable characters and a rebellious heart. Wooding created a devoted fan base with his previous series, The Tales of Ketty Jay, and although this is more fantasy adventure, it looks like he’ll be satisfying those fans again, as well as drawing in many new ones.
