The Secret Chord Geraldine Brooks
THe eye of the sheep
It is 1000 BC and Natan holds a high position in the court of King David as his prophet and the only man who can speak truthfully and plainly to David without fear of the consequences. Having faithfully served him for years, he sets down the story of a talented but flawed man who from a young age was destined for great power, glory - and betrayal. Brooks’ effortless prose brings to life all facets of the ambitious hero and the morally complex man who was David. A vivid and spellbinding recreation. Lindy Hb $39.99
SOFIE LAGUNA
I was quite overcome when I read this. It became quite thrilling and heart-breaking. The story is told in the voice of the boy whose imagination is never at rest and nor is he. Sofie Laguna has done a marvellous job by capturing this exactly. And the story itself is one encountered by many families – with a little too much alcohol and domestic violence. I thoroughly recommend this excellent novel. Eve

The Heart Goes Last Margaret Atwood
Stan and Charmaine live in their car, struggling to survive on her meagre earnings. The catch is that every second month they must swap their home for a prison cell. And the work? Perhaps not what they think it is… But both are keeping secrets from each other, so a bit more deception might not really matter! A sly and witty novel, perceptive and a pleasure to read, full of Atwood’s trademark devilish observations. Lindy Hb $32.99

To ensure they do, he secretly kills his scouts, but the timorous Albert Maillard sees what happens. When Eduoard Pericourt saves Albert from the death that Pradelle intended, he sets their intertwined futures in play. Slade House David Mitchell
If you haven’t read David Mitchell, this is a great place to start! Slade House is accessed through a bent and narrow alley and a small iron door, and every nine years a special guest is invited to visit. Unfortunately for them, they don’t quite get the welcome they were expecting… To reveal too much would destroy the pleasure of reading this brilliantly plotted and engrossing story - clever, atmospheric and definitely worth bending time with! A Strangeness in My Mind Orhan Pamuk
Carrying Albert Home a somewhat true story of a man, his wife, and her alligator
Homer Hickham Homer loves his wife Elsie, who loves Albert, her pet alligator. Albert was given to Elsie by the man she really wanted to marry, an aspiring actor named Buddy Ebsen. Albert is a constant reminder of how dissatisfied Elsie is with her life in the small coalmining town she unsuccessfully tried to escape. When Homer issues an ultimatum, the result is a life-changing road trip from West Virginia to Orlando, Florida. Set in the Depression, with a cast of wonderful characters (and cameos from real-life people), this charming, quirky novel is based on the experiences of the author’s parents. Sheer delight! Chance Developments unexpected love stories
Alexander McCall Smith Taking as his starting point five black-andwhite photographs, McCall Smith weaves his word magic, imagining the story behind the image. Set in Bendigo, the Scottish Highlands, a travelling circus in Canada, an Irish village and Edinburgh, these charming and poignant tales tell of the important things of life – living well, if not always happily, joy in family, and love. Deep truths beautifully related! Lindy

He spends three years writing love letters to a girl he saw just once at a wedding, only to elope by mistake with her sister. Every evening while working he wonders at the ‘strangeness’ in his mind that makes him feel different from everyone else, until fortune conspires once more and he understands at last what he has always yearned for. City on Fire Garth Risk Hallberg
Melvyn Bragg
New Year’s Eve 1976, a young girl is shot. So begins this electrifying debut novel. Set in a New York bursting at the seams, against the backdrop of contentious urban redevelopment, the flourishing punk and art scenes, inner city anarchists running riot, and events coming to a head during the infamous blackout of 1977. Coming in at just over 900 pages, there is not a wasted sentence in this book and I can’t recommend a better summer read. Brilliant! Greg Pb $32.99
In 1381, the 14-year-old King Richard had reason to be fearful. Plague was about, the royal coffers were empty and the people were rebelling against a draconian tax. But with his powerful mother’s support, he felt secure in his right to reign. Then a vast force of common people invaded London, led by former soldier Walter Tyler and the radical preacher John Ball, demanding freedom, equality and the uprooting of Church and State. A powerful novel about one of England’s most extraordinary episodes.

This is the most wonderful book! Archer B Helmsley, born a dreamer, lives in a house full of curiosities. When his famous grandparents (whom he has never met) disappear while exploring an iceberg, his mother decides to keep him safe from his ‘tendencies’ by confining him to home when he isn’t attending school. Luckily he makes friends with Oliver (who is a worrier, rather than a warrior) and eventually with a newly-arrived Parisian girl, Adélaidë (who has a wooden leg – did a crocodile attack her when she was ballooning in Africa?) and together they plan to travel to Antarctica to rescue Archer’s grandparents. As if a cast of delightfully quirky characters and splendid writing isn’t enough, there are marvellous, full-colour illustrations throughout, which in themselves are reason enough to buy this book! Well and away my absolute favourite this year! Ages 9-12 Lindy Hb $24.99 Due Dec

Murder by Candlelight The Gruesome Crimes Behind Our Romance with the Macabre
Michael Knox Beran In the early 19th century, a series of murders took place in and around London. Writers of the time - Sir Walter Scott, Lord Byron, De Quincey, Shelley - were fascinated by the blood and devilry of these slayings. They discerned in the act of killing a depth of hideousness that we now seem to have lost sight of, living in an age where murder has been reduced to a problem of social science and detective work. A vivid picture of a time when homicide was thought of as the intrusion of the diabolic into ordinary life. Hb $39.95

Chasing Lost Time The Life of C K Scott Moncrieff: Soldier, Spy and Translator
Jean Findlay The translation of Marcel Proust’s A La Recherche du Temps Perdu by Moncrieff was a task that would exhaust and consume him, leading to his early death at the age of 40. Expert at living a paradoxical life, Moncrieff was an interwar spy in Mussolini’s Italy, yet also a public man of letters. The Witch of Lime Street Dietrich and Riefenstahl Karin Wieland
Coming of age in the Weimar Republic, Marlene Dietrich and Leni Riefenstahl sought fame in Germany’s silent film industry. Moving deftly between two stories never before told together, Wieland contextualises these lives, chronicling revolutions in politics, fame and sexuality on a grand stage.

David Wootton The story of the extraordinary intellectual and cultural revolution that gave birth to modern science. Wootton argues that the discovery of America in 1492 demonstrated that new knowledge was possible: indeed it introduced the very concept of ‘discovery’, opening the way to the invention of science. The new science relied on a new understanding of what knowledge might be. It led to a new rationalism, killing off alchemy, astrology and belief in witchcraft. This book changes our understanding of how this transformation came about, and what science is.

Hope Without Optimism Terry Eagleton
In a virtuoso display of erudition, thoughtfulness and humour, Eagleton teases apart the concept of hope as it has been conceptualised (often mistakenly) from ancient Greece to today. He distinguishes hope from simple optimism, cheeriness, desire, idealism or adherence to the doctrine of Progress, bringing into focus a standpoint that requires reflection and commitment, arises from clear-sighted rationality, can be cultivated by practice and self-discipline, and which acknowledges, but refuses to capitulate to, the realities of failure and defeat. What Philosophy Can Do Gary Gutting
This book shows how philosophy can be used as a method for interrogating both our world and one another. Gutting looks at why today’s political debates are so polarised, why scientific research on happiness does not make us happier, and whether there are convincing reasons to believe in God. Prayers of a Secular World Jordie Albiston & Kevin Brophy (Eds)
If religion can be dismissed, the human need to pray cannot. In a secular world, poems may provide and fulfil that function. Beyond Literal Belief Religion as Metaphor
David Tacey Biblical stories are metaphorical. Hundreds of years ago, they may have been accepted as factual, but they cannot be taken literally today. Biblical language was never intended to be historical reporting, but rather to resonate in the soul and direct us toward transcendent realities. Its impact was intended to be closer to poetry than theology. Tacey argues that moving beyond literal thinking will save religion from itself. Battling the Gods Atheism in the Ancient World
Tim Whitmarsh How new is atheism? Both adherents and opponents present it as an invention of the European Enlightenment, when the forces of science and secularism challenged those of faith. But disbelief in the gods originated in a far more remote past. This book shines a light on atheism’s first 1,000 years, provides a bracing antidote to our assumptions about the roots of freethinking and offers a timely reminder that non-belief has a wealth of tradition of its own and, indeed, its own heroes. Shakespeare is often thought of as an Elizabethan playwright, but he was as much a Jacobean. 1606 saw him produce King Lear, Macbeth and Antony and Cleopatra in an extraordinary burst of productivity. From the shadows of the Gunpowder Plot of 1605, King James's fascination with witchcraft and his ardent desire to unify the kingdoms of Scotland and England, Shakespeare's reuse of Plutarch and old plays, and a certain nostalgia for Elizabeth's rule, Shapiro weaves a compelling, enjoyable book.
