FUEL&FIRE FIRE
OM CLASSIC & CUST
CAR SH9-2O1W APRIL 1
F
uel & Fire has become one of the most eagerly anticipated features of the B.C. Classic & Custom Car Show, as the sights and sounds of nostalgia nitro cars and jet funny cars fired up under the stars have to be experienced to be believed.
The jet cars, in particular, are an amazing spectacle of fire and thunder made possible by the show’s location at an actual airport, thought to be a unique situation in North America. Returning for another engagement is the Warhawk Funny Car Team out of Alaskan Derek Snelson’s stable, these two cars will shoot 50-foot exhaust flames with deafening afterburner pops on Friday and Saturday night of the show.
Powering these cars is the classic Pratt & Whitney J60 turbojet that saw its beginnings in the late 1950s for both military and civilian aircraft applications. According to Snelson, the hot-rodded J60 in his car pushes out some 5,400 pounds of thrust, the equivalent of 11,000 horsepower, more than the engine any wheel-driven drag racing car has ever produced. Snelson’s best run in the funny car is a 5.75 at 273 mph, somewhat slower than a modern nitro car due to the less-aggressive launch and more linear acceleration characteristics of a thrust-based vehicle. In any case, the cars won’t be accelerating at all at the show, but that does not mean that fans can’t expect an awesome display. Ever the showman, Snelson promises to rattle off dozens of fireballs and afterburner-pops that should set off car alarms in every parking lot near Tradex, if not blow out a few windows, although hopefully not blow over the five-ton garbage bin like another car did a couple of years ago! These monsters are loudly percussive, and Snelson has tuned his jet to be the loudest out there, with the entertainment factor the most important consideration.
like being at this show because it’s so prestigious, and an awesome event. It’s the best show in the Pacific Northwest area and Western Canada, just the sheer scale of it. It’s basically the SEMA show of the North,” he says.
“WE LOVE BEING IN CANADA, MEETING ALL THE GREAT PEOPLE THERE AND PUTTING ON A SHOW FOR THEM.” Anyone who has seen Derek Snelson and teammate Barry Prescott and his jet knows how much he enjoys doing that, and as always, his performance on Friday and Saturday night of the show will be a must-see event. by Gerry Frechette
“It’s an honour to be part of this show and entertain the fans,” he says. “I really want to rattle off a bunch of afterburner pops, and my car is set up to do that.” Snelson, a show producer in his own right in the U.S., considers the B.C. Classic & Custom Car Show to be the top event in this corner of the continent, in either country. “I

THE KING OF KUSTOMIZERS With a career in custom car designing that is approaching a 70 year span and over 1000 creations to his credit, labeling George Barris the greatest car customizer of all time would not be out of line. Having started modifying the appearance of cars while in his teens, George began customizing cars with his brother Sam in the late 30’s. Later their shop in Hollywood CA, became widely known. Many celebrities also sought out Barris customs for their unique designs. He is the only person to have won America’s Most Beautiful Roadster award four times. Today George remains one of the busiest customizers in the business and has been the grand marshal of the B.C. Classic and Custom Show since 2006. He is not only the presenter of the Custom Car of the Year award but also personally selects the recipient of the award each year. We caught up with George recently for an interview. Rolf – As presenter and selector (grand marshal) of the Custom Car of the Year award, what criteria do you use to choose the winner?

George – The way the vehicle looks regarding originality, design, quality and how it’s proportioned. For example if it had large flared fender openings over little bicycle wheels it would appear out of proportion. Attention to detail, fit and finish work, how the cars design conforms as a package are all important. I employ a points system where I award points in dif-

ferent categories such as upholstery, engine, body and paint, etc. Rolf – What are you working on these days? George – I’m still designing cars for customers at my shop here in North Hollywood. I’m currently working on a project for Jeff Dunham. Another one we’ve started is a car for ZZ Top guitarist Billy Gibbons that will be a guitar he can drive. I’ve been working closely with Ford lately and I’ve been using one of their Ford Focus cars to create a modern Bat Car for Galpin Motors. Rolf – Today you are obviously busy with your custom car business. Can you see a time when you will retire or are you in your retirement now? George – I never really considered retiring from what I’m doing. My daughter Joji and her son run the business today and are working on a book. Just recently we made arrangements with NHRA for a special drag race at the Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals at Pomona last November. Paired up to race each other was the Munster’s Coach against the Dragula (Grandpa’s Dragster) which recreated the 1964 race we did for the Munster’s TV series. In addition the original Batmobile from the TV series was there to do a burnout! Editors Note: George Barris is appearing at this year’s show courtesy of Great Canadian Oil Change. by Rolf Norberg

AMERICANCLASSIC
AMERICAN GRAFFITI MOVIE HELPED REJUVENATE THE CAR CULTURE
Long before Luke Skywalker and Indiana Jones became household names, a low-budget cinematic project made its debut in theatres to little fanfare and critical acclaim. But gradually the merit of this groundbreaking movie about teenage “rights of passage” became apparent. George Lucas, the mastermind behind the “Star Wars” and “Raiders of the Lost Ark” franchises, had just finished his first film in the early 1970s, a sci fi movie titled “THX 1138,” and was anxious to bring to the big screen a story he was familiar with. Drawing heavily upon his own experiences as a youth growing up in Southern California, George set out to write and direct this brilliant motion picture known as “American Graffiti.” This was not just a great car flick; this was a great film. Set in Modesto California in ‘62 but filmed in San Rafael and Petaluma, this film tells the tale of four lads whose lives are intertwined during one late summer night. It was a rare time in American history, a period filled with change, and Lucas capitalized on this underlying facet to deliver his story. Changing clothing styles, evolving tastes in music, the sexual revolution and even Detroit’s horsepower wars were all used in portraying youth caught in a time that could be termed the end of the “age of innocents.” For George, the road to bring his script to the theatres was fraught with pitfalls and, as with any large project, many obstacles had to be overcome to reach completion. Having his script turned down by many production studios, it was Universal Studios that finally agreed to take on the project. George then battled with studio executives to keep it as a
feature film as opposed to their idea of creating a “made-forTV movie.” After securing assistance in the form of a writer, Gloria Katz, to help him write the screenplay, he landed a producer in the form of Francis Ford Coppola, who had just finished producing “The Godfather.”
(Richard Dreyfuss) and Joe the Pharaoh watched as their plan to “fix” Holstein’s cop car transpired. Or the attempts of Toad ( Charles Martin Smith) to secure a bottle of “Old Harper” for his bitchin’ babe Debbie. And, of course, John Milner’s exploits with his unlikely passenger, teenybopper Carol (Mackenzie Phillips), were award-winning material.
When it came time to choose cast members, George relied mostly on unknowns as this was a low-budget film ($750,000). For those actors, “American Graffiti” was a stepping stone to stardom as Harrison Ford, Richard Dreyfuss, Suzanne Somers, Cindy Williams and Mackenzie Phillips, among others, went on to have very successful acting careers.
Credit also goes to this movie for being the first to assemble sound bits of rock and roll hits of the time as background music that ran the entire length of the film, followed by the release of a movie soundtrack album. “Graffiti” can also be called a landmark film for focusing on not one but four characters and their experiences, a concept that was unheard of then but common in today’s movies and television.
After the movie’s release in ‘73, its popularity steadily grew to the point where it received a nomination for Best Picture at the Academy Awards and has since been voted one of the American Film Institute’s top 100 films of all time, right up there with “Lawrence of Arabia” and “Gone with the Wind.” What has made this movie so popular with movie fans and critics alike is George’s interpretation of this time and place in America, his innovative techniques in film production and editing, plus a superb screenplay. George used numerous resources to compile many elements that brought us back in time to a much simpler, fun place. His attention to detail was remarkable, with items that would evoke pleasant memories – such as Mel’s Drive-In, the high school sock hop, hot rods cruising the town’s main drag, backseat escapades, DJ Wolfman Jack’s radio banter and the final showdown between the Champion and the Challenger on Paradise Road. All played a part to set the tone for an enjoyable remembrance. Who could forget that scene where Kurt

Abbotsford News Tuesday, April 16, 2013
Part of George’s recollection of this time in America’s past involved the ritual of cruising and racing, and he went to great lengths to see that the cast members were not the only stars of the movie. Several cars had to be transformed to fit the part. The ‘49 red Merc driven by the Pharaohs was originally a stock ‘51 Merc when bought for use in the movie. It was given a quick top chop, a front bumper borrowed from a ‘70 Camaro as a floating grill, and then splashed with a coat of red. For Falfa’s “Bad Ass” ‘55 Chevy, four cars were used in production. Two were bought from a wrecking yard to be used as cars in the final crash scene; one was flipped, the other set on fire. A third car was used for interior shots. The fourth car generates the most attention as it was originally used in the filming of “Two Lane Blacktop.” In “Graffiti,” Falfa’s ‘55 was supposedly equipped with a 409 Chevy engine but in reality it was said to have an L-88 427 Corvette engine under the hood. As for Milner’s yellow coupe, known as the “fastest thing in the valley,” it was a street rod that was converted to movie
car status. Originally, plans called for a sectioned body but soon after the grill was cut down, time restraints forced the cancelation of that modification; thus the reason for the shortened grill. Because of the mostly night filming, yellow paint was chosen so it would stand out in the dark. When this movie was released to the public in 1973, the car hobby and cruising in general was on life support. It was a period when hot rods were no longer hot, toned down due to gas rationing created by the oil embargo, and they were relabelled “street rods.” To make things worse, vans were the latest craze. Then along comes “American Graffiti.” It was so different from the typical car movies of the time that were often exploitative and filled with car chases. It has been 40 years since this movie was produced, and in recognition of this milestone, the BC Custom and Classic Car Show will feature a celebration of this special anniversary. Scheduled to appear on this weekend will be not only tribute cars but also stars from the movie. Bo Hopkins, who played the antagonistic Joe the Pharaoh, will be in attendance and may be heard to say, “It’s not the size of the scratch that
A21
matters, it’s the principle.” Candy Clark, whose character Debbie was out for a night of adventure, will make an appearance all three days of the show. “I bet you can find us some brew” is just one of her memorable quotes. But likely garnering the most interest will be Paul Le Mat, who had the starring roll as tough guy hot rodder John Milner. Having earned local legend status behind the wheel of his yellow ‘32 coupe, John cruised his way into the hearts and minds of many movie fans. “OK, Toad, we’ll take ‘em all” is a line from the movie that will forever be synonymous with John Milner. With Lucas’ history of creating sequels (and prequels) for his movies, perhaps we can expect to see him come out with an “American Graffiti lll” (“More American Graffiti” was released in 1979), but since Joe the Pharaoh and John Milner were written out of the script in the second movie, this might be the last opportunity to see them again. by Rolf Norberg

BUT THE HIGHLIGHT OF THIS YEAR’S EVENT HAS TO BE THE MULTI-AWARDWINNING ABSOLUTE MADNESS, A 1934 FORD 3-WINDOW COUPE OWNED BY JIM LINTON. Decked out with blue paint, red flames and plenty of chrome, it’s hard to believe this impressive machine was once in terrible condition. Purchased a decade ago, the car was in rough shape when Linton first acquired it.
ABSOLUTE MADNESS 2013 FEATURE CAR “It was bad. I bought it sight unseen out of North Dakota,” he explained. Having only seen pictures, Linton said once the car arrived, it was “way worse” than he had imagined. “We think it had been laying on its side in water for years. There was rust that was covered in duct tape and primered. There was substantial rust damage.” Not to be deterred, Linton and his team handmade sheet metal pieces to replace the damaged areas. “All of the repairs and body mods we did, you know the body itself is probably only 20 per cent original Henry Ford sheet metal.” The desire to modify a 1934 Ford Coupe came to Linton after he saw a photo of someone else’s work. “I said, ‘you know, I’d like to do one like that one day.”’

30 YEARS EXPERIENCE
Abbotsford News Tuesday, April 16, 2013
After that, the search was on for a car body. Shortly after, Linton met car builder Bill McLaughlin at a car show and the two began to collaborate on the job. Originally, the project wasn’t going to be as elaborate as it eventually turned out. Linton said the goal was to create a “show driver” type car. However, after a year of work, the goal changed. “I started thinking I should go for the Ridler Award in Detroit at the Autorama.” The Ridler is the pinnacle of hot rodding and custom car awards, but to have any chance of winning it, every part of the vehicle has to be perfect. According to Linton, every fastener, every piece, every detail could win or lose you the award. He said it changes everything you do. “You can’t cut corners anywhere because you waste everything you do up to that point.” Having made the decision to “go for it,” Linton spent about seven years bringing the Ford up to the standard he wanted. Then, he debuted his creation in Detroit at the Autorama in 2010. In order to qualify for the Ridler, the vehicle has to make the “Great Eight” – the top eight cars at the show. Linton made it into the final eight, but failed to capture the top award. “Hey, just making it into the Great Eight made me proud.” Since making its debut, the ’34 Ford has been shown up and down the West Coast and picked up more than 25 awards, from best in class to best paint, outstanding

engine and best undercarriage.
FUNDRAISER!
But after all its initial success, Linton decided to take the vehicle off the circuit. “For the past year and a half, it has basically been retired.” Until now. Organizers of the BC Classic and Custom Car Show have been trying to get Linton, a resident of Washington State, to bring the Ford to Abbotsford for the past three years. This time, everything fell into place. In order to show the car, Linton needs to haul the vehicle, prep it, change the shocks and make several other preparations. Fortunately for local car enthusiasts, builder Bill McLaughlin is also available this weekend, which is allowing Linton to bring the Ford up to Abbotsford.
MSA FORD is pleased to offer the community this great way to raise funding!
In fact, he plans to bring his other special project, a 1968 Firebird convertible, to Tradex.

Cars have always been a huge part of Linton’s life. “I was born with it. My dad calls it a sickness. Ever since I was a kid, I was drawing cars with crayons and building car models.”
YE
He moved up to buying old cars and fixing them up. Eventually, he started building hot rods. Now retired, Linton said he has no plans to stop. He just purchased some land and started his own hot rod shop. “It’s not a business. It’s for my hobbies. It’s for my sickness.”

Gene: This is something that has developed over the last several years and taken me around the world, as far away as Japan and Australia. In Canada alone I’ve conducted workshops in Nova Scotia, New Bruinswick, Winnipeg and in the Vancouver area. In your town I’ve done several workshops as well as painted a number of cars, one ’65 Impala for the C.U.T. high school program (Customs for Urban Teens) and a ’52 Chevy and ’34 Ford coupe for John Foxley, all “fade away” paint schemes. 2011 was the first year for the Custom Car Classroom at the BC Classic and Custom Car Show. Show producer Richardt Scholz brought me in to customize a car in the show over a three-day period. Working with local talent such as Brad Purser and others, we started by primering the ’48 Ford coupe of Dave

If you were to look back through the history books, you would find a handful of world-renowned craftsman. Among this elite group of men you would find Gene Winfield, pioneer care customizer and innovative automotive artist. Known for his signature “face away” paint jobs, Gene has also built some of the most original customs over a 60year period including the Reactor, Strip Star and the Jade Idol. Starting at a shop in Modesto, CA, he began to make a name for himself with unique designs for clients’ cars. In 1965 Gene moved on to the movie and TV industry which required him to build promotional vehicles for their shows. Today he is still busy at the age of 84 building customs at his home in California’s Mojave desert and conducting hands-on workshops where budding customizers learn firsthand from a master of car customizing.

CSSM: Besides car customizing what other ventures have you been busy with? Gene: Last August we took a ’32 Ford roadster with a NASCAR motor in it out to the Bonneville Salt Flats where I drove it on a 219 mph run. Unfortunately the surface was slippery and I ended up spinning the car several times. CSSM:I understand you worked with the AMT Model Corporation designing models and later you built the real thing. Gene: Yes, I was asked to take over the speed and custom division of AMT in Phoenix, which produced full-scale specialty vehicles for the movie and TV industry. Later, models were made of them at their model division. We build the Shuttlecraft you saw
on Star Trek and cars for ‘60s TV shows like “Get Smart” and “The Man from U.N.C.L.E.”

CSSM: The car on “The Man from U.N.C.L.E” was known as the “Piranha” and had a drag race version that was sponsored by AMT. Were you involved in that car too?

CSSM: What plans do you have for the future? Gene: I will continue with the workshops as long as people are wanting to learn about customizing. Currently I’m building a replica of a truck I built in the ‘60s called the “Pacifica.” It was based on a Ford Econoline pick-up. It will get a ’92 T-bird engine and lots of polished stainless steel throughout. by Rolf Norberg

NITRO MADNESS
The 17th edition of the B.C. Classic & Custom Car Show will be featuring the Fuel & Fire Cacklefest at 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday night, and a matinee for the nitro cars only (no jets) on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. What is a Cacklefest you ask? Well it’s a free show within the show, a chance to send not just your eyes but all five of your senses on a visceral vacation as we fire up some of drag racing’s most famous and iconic nitro-guzzling behemoths and then cap it all off with a Jet Car flame show that quite simply has to be seen - and felt - to be believed.
for the big dogs that follow … the TOP Fuel dragsters. These are the kings of the sport and are motor-vated by the renowned Chrysler Hemi power-plant. A high-tech magneto ignites cylinders that have been packed beyond capacity with exotic nitromethane fuel through the efforts of a set of fuel injectors perched atop a magnesium supercharger. These motors are set on KILL and manage to wring an astounding 2500 horsepower out of a 400 cubic inch engine.
But wait! Don’t leave your seat, as we’ll wrap up with not one, but TWO of the most awe-inspiring vehicles on earth … the Jet-Powered Funny Car. You’ll witness burner-popping combat between Yakima Washington’s Derek Snelson in the Warhawk Jet Funny Car and the flame throwing dragster of local legend Barry Prescott. (A man who is JUST as fast OFF the track.)
Yes my friend, if you’ve always wondered what would happen if you attached a 20,000 horsepower fighter plane jet engine to a custom crafted, state-of-the-art tube chassis and lit the fuse, you are about to find out. It’ll be a Gearhead’s Symphony of Fire … the flames shooting for the sky … the ground pounding beneath your feet and your ear-drums begging for mercy. You’ll get up close and personal with the stars and the cars as you travel back in time to the mid-60s when these actual cars terrorized the hundreds of drag strips around North America. Yet unlike other car shows that deliver only the sight of these behemoths, we will assault your eardrums and sear your nasal passages with the beloved, sweet, yet acrid scent of burnt NITRO. The fire up starts with the injected JUNIOR Fueler of Jerry King. This small block Chevy powered dragster whines and snarls like a hornet with P.M.S. and serves as an appetizer

It’s hard to believe but these fighter plane engines are hopped up and belch 30 foot blasts of flame, 100 feet tall plumes of smoke and the much beloved Burner Pops. (Giant fire balls that explode with a percussion that’ll rattle your sternum.) The pride of San Bernadino, that sexy sexagenarian, Wayne “The Peregrine” King will battle Don Love in the legendary car of Kansas John Wiebe to see who can pull the highest decibel levels. Next up we’ll be turning the key on “Bradford’s Fiat” a beautiful example of your classic Fuel Altered. These cars have the same nitro swilling hemi between the pipes but have a wheelbase of around 90 inches making them a real adventure to drive. These are the most ill-handling cars ever and often take ½ a mile to traverse the ¼ mile track leaving your heart in your throat and a deposit in your shorts. For several years now, the title sponsor of the B.C. Classic & Custom Car Show has been Lucas Oil Products of Canada, and local representative Harry Larson is excited about the company’s involvement in this year’s show. “It keeps our name in the forefront, because
Harry Larson we have a lot of products that are made for
custom and performance cars and motorcycles,” says Larson. “We get to meet the average enthusiast who has tried one of our products and comes back to tell us how pleased they are that the product works the way that we say it will. People come to us with a problem they are having with a vehicle, and we are able to help them solve it.” There will be several new Lucas products making their debut at the Show. The Slick Mist line is being expanded, with Speed Wax
added to the Interior Detailer and Tire & Trim Shine. This year also sees new developments in motor oil, with Zinc Additive now available for racing engines and older street motors that need the extra lubricant advantages of zinc, and synthetic motor oil now available in 5-litre jugs, adding to the new products in the ever-growing Lucas Oil catalogue. In the Lucas Oil booth again this year will be the blown dragster of John Evans, and the wild multi-engine tractor puller that has wowed the crowds for a couple of years. Of course, drag racing fans can look forward to Lucas Oil sponsorship of two of the biggest events at Mission Raceway Park this season, as well as events at Ashcroft, and anyone with a speciality vehicle should stop by the Lucas Oil booth at the Show and see their wide range of lubricants and products. by Gerry Frechette
