AIRSHOW The 50th annual Abbotsford International Airshow will be remembered by many as a success, and for good reason, as it earned the Northwest Council of Airshows’ “Airshow of the Year” for 2012. This August, the aviation festival is back and celebrating 51 years as one of the largest airshows in North America. This is the 70th anniversary of RCAF Station Abbotsford, which was set up as a training base during the Second World War, so this year’s show will be a salute to Canada’s air force, says incoming president of the Abbotsford Airshow, Jim Reith. The show lineup includes military demonstrations by the Canadian Forces, including the CF-18 Hornet, the Snowbirds
and an air-to-ground tactical assault demonstration with Griffon helicopters. Other performances include the Canadian Forces parachute team, the Skyhawks, as well as plenty of explosions and fire with AV8FX Pyrotechnics and The SmokeNThunder jet car that will race the CF-18 Hornet. Vintage demonstrations include the A-1 Skyraider, the P-51 Mustang “Valhalla,” the F7F Tigercat “Bad Kitty,” and many other favourites from the Heritage Flight Museum. The public is also invited to explore the interiors of many Canadian military aircraft, corporate jet displays, and homebuilt and collector aviation examples. For the kids, there is a new interactive Kids’ Zone, aviation school kiosks, lots of concession
stands, souvenir shops and the chance to meet performers at one of the autograph booths. “This is the first time that we’ve had a Kids’ Zone,” says Reith. “Now parents have a place to bring their kids when they get restless, and still be able to watch the show.”
FUN WITH FAMILY
ABBOTSFORD INTERNATIONAL
Reith said he is excited about this year’s event and is ready to begin the next 50 years of shows. The three-day show takes place from Aug. 9-11 at the Abbotsford Airport (30440 Liberator Ave.). Gates and ground displays are open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. with the main flying program running from noon to 5:30 p.m.
New Horizons... Grief can feel like fear but at its best, grief is a transformative process; a long winding path, where any turn in the road can reveal a new horizon. These new horizons are powerful but grieving people can’t reach them if no one is there to help them along the way.
