The Neighborhood The medieval village of Monsaraz, maintain its magic of yore as few places in the world. Made of lime and shale, it was the land of magnificent stories of daring kings, Knights Templar, brave people and dames of simple beauty. Suspended in time, the historic Alentejo village, is one of the oldest in Portugal. The privileged location of Monsaraz, situated on top of the hill and overlooking the Guadiana and the border with Spain, made it highly coveted by the people who disputed it. Then named Saris or Sarish, Monsaraz was conquered from the Muslims by Geraldo Sem Pavor in 1167 in a military incursion that left Évora. The walls surrounding the village guard a welcoming village. To discover Monsaraz is to travel back in time and enjoy history in the present. The castle of Monsaraz is a unique and exceptional point in Portugal, as it is one of the most splendid lookouts over the water mirror of the Alqueva Dam, the largest artificial lake in Europe and one of the greatest Portuguese works of our century. The archaeological and architectural heritage to know in the Monsaraz area is not located in the village. In the parishes that border it, there is much more to discover. From megalithic monuments to the Olive Oil Museum or casa do Cante Alentejano. (form of popular song classified as intangible cultural heritage of humanity) The practice of various sports activities at the Alqueva Dam is mandatory for the more adventurous.
