ABOUT A-DOS-FRANCOS

It belonged to the municipality of Óbidos and passed, by Decree of 7 September 1895 to the municipality of Caldas da Rainha.

According to the local population the beginning of A-dos-Francos, it was in the 9th century, but others believe it was in the 10st century. There is no fixed opinion as to the circumstances or factors relating to its genesis, however everyone agrees that it was given to the French.

Some argue that A dos Francos would have been a territory offered to the French, by D. Afonso Henriques between 1140 and 1148, as a reward for their collaboration in the conquest of Lisbon, to the Moors. Others, which would have been offered to the French, by D. Sandro I when the settlement of the lands conquered from the Moors.

Around the end of the 18th century, this parish suffers a great economic and cultural impulse. By decree of law of 7 September 1895, this parish that belonged to the municipality of Óbidos, passes to the municipality of Caldas da Rainha.

A-dos-Francos is traversed by several streams, and by the River Arnóia. The population was distributed in the parish due to the influence of the soil. The most fertile land was used for agriculture and the rest for housing.

The parish consists of small farms, located around the parish.

From 1900 to 1960 there was a demographic increase. From 1970 to 1981 there was a decrease in the number of inhabitants, caused by migratory movements. In 1981 this village had 1975 inhabitants, which corresponds to a density of 94.9 inhabitants per km2. In 1983 there was an increase in inhabitants with the return of emigrants. The population continues to devote itself mainly to agriculture.

Being completely self-sufficient, it also has connection to the general water network of the village.

The old barn was divided into two independent lodges with two floors.

A-dos-Francos is located in a flat valley area in the so-called West Zone of Portugal, where also stands out the Medieval Historic Village of Óbidos With about 12000 inhabitants, known for its beauty and historical preservation, is also famous for its Festivals, Medieval, National of Chocolate, and Christmas, it attracts thousands of visitors throughout the year.
