Portugal ranked 4th in the Global Peace Index 2021 This makes Portugal one of the most peaceful and safest countries in the world.
Portugal continues to be one of the most peaceful countries in the world in 2021 keep up its reputation as being one of the safest. It is ranked in 4th place in the "Global Peace Index 2021", with 1.267 points (the fewer points the better), having however fallen 2 positions compared to last year's ranking. Iceland continues to lead the list, with 1.1 points, making it the most peaceful country in the world. Portugal's latest achievement as one of the world's most peaceful countries has been widely praised, especially by the Government, highlighting the fact that Portugal appears in the ranking only behind Iceland, New Zealand and Denmark. In other words, Portugal is the second most peaceful country in Europe, the Executive stresses in a statement, highlighting the progress that has been made, since Portugal occupied 18th place in the ranking in 2014. "Portugal being considered one of the safest countries in the world is an asset to the quality of life of the Portuguese. Safety is today a decisive factor for attracting investment, for attracting the tourists we hope to have again and for strengthening the country's global image. We easily remember countries that have a great potential like ours, in which insecurity limits economic development, investment or tourism," says the Minister of Internal Administration, Eduardo Cabrita, quoted in the note. "Portugal recorded the lowest crime indicators in 2020 since the current registration model has existed (over 30 years). And it is important to remember that this was achieved in a year as difficult as this one of pandemic that, in many countries, contributed to an increase in conflict and the increase of some forms of criminality," adds the politician. Returning to the latest edition of the Global Peace Index 2021, it should be added that Afghanistan is the least peaceful country in the world, with 3.631 points. Yemen (3.407), Syria (3.371), South Sudan (3.363) and Iraq (3.257) complete, in the same order, the top 5 least safe countries on the planet.

The Portuguese Way Of Life – What To Expect Although spectacular white beaches, fabulous food, superb local wine, great golf courses, extensive watersports and a delightful climate all play their part in life in Portugal. In golf, the country has some of the finest and most lavishly appointed courses in the world. In the world of surfing, Portugal boasts some of the most formidable waves in the sport, infamously the 100-foot monster at Praia do Norte, outside the fishing village of Nazare, north of Lisbon. Another distinctively Portuguese gift to the world is its extensive culinary influence. Not only are Portuguese missionaries said to have introduced tempura to Japan in the 16th century, but the British staple of fried fish (peixe frito) came from Portugal a century later. If that weren’t surprising enough, Indian food would be a lot blander if the chilli pepper hadn’t been introduced by Portuguese traders to India around the same time. It is no secret that Piri Piri sauce is a Portuguese invention. In a wider context, Portugal has a rich history in music and the arts, seen in the Celticinfluenced folklore of the north and in the Moorish architecture and musical legacy of the south. Either of the country’s major cities, Lisbon and Porto, will satisfy any yearning for a regular cultural fix. Porto is one of the oldest cities in Europe As would be expected of a capital city, Lisbon has the majority of the country’s museums and galleries. No whistlestop tour of Portugal’s cultural tradition would be complete without reference to the importance of the Portuguese people’s ongoing love affair with coffee. The Portuguese coffee culture brings people together, and the tradition of taking a coffee break mid-morning and/or after lunch is firmly entrenched in the national psyche.
