TRADITIONS PRESÉPIOS

BANANEIRO

Portugal is actually very Christmasy in its own way. One example is nativity scenes (presépios), Nativity presépios are part of the Portuguese Tradition of Christmas.

Ths is a relatively modern Christmas tradition in Portugal that started 40 years ago, when several friends gathered on the 24th of December at an old tavern called “Casa das Bananas”, in Braga. The idea was to wish everyone “Merry Christmas” while having a glass of Moscatel de Setúbal, accompanied by a banana.

With greater or lesser wealth, more Artistic or Handmade, large or small, they are seen throughout the country

Why Portugal

The Madeiros, Madeiros de Natal or Fogueiras do Galo are big fires that are traditionally lit voluntarily on Christmas Eve. Usually they are lit around midnight after the “Missa do Galo” mass and are supposed to burn all night. This very old Portuguese tradition can be seen in cities across the north and centre of the country, especially in inland cities. These impressive bonfires are a way to celebrate and welcome the sun, in line with the old pagan celebrations in honour of the Winter Solstice.

There are also "broas", which are oval sweet bread biscuits. These are normally made with sweet potatoes, ground almonds, eggs, sugar, and orange peel. Many people who come to Portugal often do not realize that there are so many different types of Port: vintage, tawny, ruby, white, LBV, crust... and so on. Christmas, is a good time to open a vintage bottle of Porto. You will find them in all supermarkets or wine cellars, and they are really affordable. Alternatively, a Late Bottled Vintage (LBV) tastes a lot like a Vintage Port, but it's much cheaper. In addition to Porto, consider adding a bottle of Ginjinha to the shopping list. This is a Portuguese made from sour cherries that also has its place in the Christmas period.

For lovers of sweet drinks, Amarguinha, a liqueur made of almonds that tastes very similar to marzipan. Christmas lunches and dinners are always accompanied by the good White and Red Wines, which are found in all regions. For all types of prices, in Portugal a wine even low value is synonymous with good quality.
