LISBON OF THE PAS THE PRESENT Lisbon has an extraordinary mix of architectural styles. Although much of the city was laid to ruins by the Great Earthquake in 1755, it escaped WWII's bombings, so it's possible to find examples of architecture from every period of its history. The indigenous Pombaline and Manueline stand out the most, as do the rich baroque interiors. The most important urban project of recent times was the rebirth of the eastern waterfront district now known as Parque das Nações, for the World Fair of 1998. That's where you now find the most notable examples of contemporary architecture.

ST AND OF Many of Lisbon's plainest façades hide incredibly rich interiors. They follow a principle of distinction between the "body" and the "soul," with the body (the exterior) being less important than the soul (the interior), rich and fulfilled by God. Therefore, starting in the late 1600's, church walls were covered with tile panels and gold. Lisbon was the manufacturing center of the country, having two main periods of gilded woodcarving production -- during the reign of King John V, which developed the "Joanino" style, and the second half of the 18th century with the rise of the "Portuguese style," with more abundant structural motifs and denser ornamentation.

PALÁCIO FOZ

PALÁCIO BURNAY

PALÁCIO DA EGA

A PALACE CITY AJUDA – THE ROYAL PALACE When the city was completely destroyed in the earthquake of 1755, the royal family decided to build their new residence on the Hill of Ajuda, which had escaped destruction. There were plans for one of the largest palaces in the world, with gardens descending to the Tagus. With the French invasion and the end of the monarchy, only about a fifth of the original plan was completed. However it is a huge palace, featuring much of the royal family's collection.

PALÁCIO FOZ It is one of the most beautiful buildings in the center of Lisbon. Is construction began in 1777, with several owners remodeling it and giving it the mix of styles that can be seen inside, from rococo to Neo-Gothic and Neo-Manueline. One of the peculiarities of the building is the "abbey", a space once used as a virtually exclusive restaurant of the Masonic elite, where secret meetings were held.

PALÁCIO BURNAY Built in 1734, it was the residence of the Patriarchs of Lisbon and aristocrats until its acquisition by the State in 1940. The most impressive feature in the building are the walls of the staircase, painted in trompe-l'oeil, and which create a monumental effect of reliefs.

PALÁCIO DA EGA Built in the 16th century and has been used since 1931 as facilities of the Overseas Historical Archive. Here you will find one of the most beautiful rooms in the city, the Pompeii Hall. It was used as a music hall at large banquets, and a statue of Apollo, god of music, was placed on site.

All the details appeal to aesthetics and functionality: the careful selection of a refined palette of tones, the elegant details that perfectly integrate in the spaces, and the finishing noble materials.

Portugal was once a colonial empire, and one of the longestlasting. It's no surprise that the influences of its former colonies, Goa, Macau, Brazil, Angola, Mozambique, to name a few, can be seen and felt everywhere, even in its food. Lisbon is probably the city where these influences as a whole can be more find.

FOOD IN LISBON On the other hand, food in Lisbon is based on the mediterranean diet. If you want to live in Lisbon and join our food system, you must prepare to eat more vegetables ... each meal is based on veggies, fruits, minimally processed whole grains, beans nuts and seeds. Also plant-based oils. Diet is known for being rich in high quality, extra virgin olive oil, but other anti-inflammatory fats get the green light: think nuts and seeds (and their butters) as well as olives. Seafood... This includes fish, there is plenty of variety to choose from, along with other seafood, like mussels, scallops or shrimp. People enjoy cheese. Wine is very much a part of a Mediterranean lifestyle, but it's sipped responsibly. Think now of mixing these elements with spices, cooking techniques and ingredients from the four corners of the world, and you will discover a cuisine of unique characteristics that you will find throughout Lisbon. However, we speak of a cosmopolitan capital, where the cuisines from all over the world are very well represented.

BEST NEIGHBORHOODS TO LIVE IN LISBON One of Europe's lowest crime rates, abundant sunshine, mild temperatures and a tranquil lifestyle — these are the ingredients that give Lisbon a high quality of life. After the exodus to the suburbs since the 1970s, which left the abandoned old town, the Portuguese capital is slowly reconquering residents. But what are the best neighborhoods to live in Lisbon? The answer depends on who you ask and the environment you're looking for.

ALFAMA It is the oldest area of the city, situated around the Castle (Graça) and down the hill to the river (Alfama). For many it is the most desirable neighborhood. Inhabited by a varied set of people, from pensioners, lower middle class or upper-class families residing in former palaces of family tradition, immigrants and young singles. It has the charm, soul and atmosphere of neighborhood that many dream of. Rehabilitated homes can be good deals, and many offer river views. The best are in the Sé area. AVENIDAS NOVAS A blend of beautiful award-winning architecture with office and residential buildings, built in the 20th century on wide avenues. Traditionally inhabited by the middle class and upper-middle class families, it has become one of the most desired areas, not least because it is a flat area of the city the circulation on foot or by bike is greatly facilitated

BELÉM Last neighborhood of the city before the suburbs of the Cascais line, as Algés or Dafundo. It is located where the Tagus meets the Atlantic, and is where many of the city's great monuments and museums are located. Inhabited by the middle and middle-low class in Belém and Ajuda, and a low profile or diplomatic upper class in Restelo.

CAMPO DE OURIQUE A lively residential neighborhood. Inhabited by upper-middle class families and a new young middle class. With great diversity of commerce and a true neighborhood environment they give you a good quality of life. Option for a large part of the Francophone community that has been installed in Lisbon in recent years, due to the proximity of the French Lyceum. There is no metro station and house prices are above average.

CHIADO The most sophisticated neighborhood of the city, known for its international trade, cafes and theaters. Inhabited by a generation of young professionals of upper and upper middle class, where many of the new international residents have been installed. Great cultural offer. Perfect for those who do not have a car, it is however expensive and lacking parking.

PARQUE DAS NAÇÕES A residential and commercial district known for its emblematic contemporary architecture. Inhabited by upper and middle-upper class, and very international. Next to the river has many green spaces, good access on public transport, and lots of parking offer.

PRÍNCIPE REAL Charming residential neighborhood with beautiful buildings, now known for its sophisticated shops. Inhabited by a good mix of people, of various age and social groups. Those who prefer to live without a car will appreciate being steps from the center of everything. Good street trade. Scarcity of parking for those who can not live without a car, with rents and prices of new homes of the highest in the city.

SANTOS AND LAPA/ESTRELA Santos is a riverside neighborhood known as a small "design district" for its design shops, and Lapa/Estrela is the neighborhood of embassies and mansions. Inhabited by the middle class in Santos and upper class aristocrat in Lapa. Quiet residential area. Lapa condominiums are of very good quality.

SANTOS

National Tile Museum

Palácio Fronteira

This is one of the most important museums in our country, for its unique collection and totally dedicated to the art of tile, so differentiating from Portuguese culture.

Dating back to 1670, the Marquis de Fronteira's house is one of those singular places in Lisbon. In addition to the escultural garden, you can see the rooms filled with decorative tiles from the 17th and 18th centuries, which depict scenes of battles and hunting.

The building where the museum is installed is equally unique, being the former Convent of the Madre de Deus, founded in 1509 by Queen D. Leonor. We highlight the tile panel representative of the panorama of Lisbon before the earthquake of 1755.

There is nothing comparable in Lisbon, especially for those who appreciate history, architecture and blueness. The Battle Room was once considered the "sistine chapel of Portuguese bluestone".

UNIQUENESS OF

Panels of Av. Infante Santo

Lisbon Metro

A project of the Municipal Chamber of Lisbon that aimed to bring the blue-gardening of public art, brought together a set of Modernist painters, a movement that existed from the 1950s on.

The Lisbon Metro has always been open to different proposals for architecture and artistic intervention, from numerous national and international authors. The first stations of the Lisbon Metro, open to the public in 1959, resumed a tradition, qualifying these urban spaces with artistic creation in tile, thus sponsoring the Arts and contributing, by the artistic valorization of their public spaces, to a greater humanization of the city of Lisbon.

It is a set of six compositions in great prominence in staircases on Avenida Infante Santo. They were created by the artists Carlos Botelho, Maria Keil, Alice Jorge e Júlio Pomar e Rolando Sá Nogueira reference works in the modern reintegration of the tile in the urban environment.
