Why Portugal Now

Covering almost a third of the country, the Alentejo is proving to be one of the most beautiful regions of Portugal.

Picturesque, it is covered with vast properties producing olive oil and, high quality wines. The rich past of the Alentejo is reflected in a multitude of remains from the Celtic, Roman, Visigoth, Moorish and Christian periods. Today, it is a region where life is good, quiet and peaceful. It is, first of all, a rural area. Purchase and rental prices are affected as they are lower than in most of Portugal. Coming to live in Alentejo is therefore an excellent real estate business.

In this month's edition of WHY PORTUGAL NOW, I bring to you some of this important region to discover.

Whatever you need, I'm here for you

Choosing the Alentejo for the price of real estate In the larger cities Evora and Beja, property prices are of course higher than in the countryside, but they remain much more attractive than in large urban centres or mass tourism regions such as the Algarve.

Living in the Alentejo for its climate Mediterranean-style, its climate offers hot, dry summers and mild, humid winters. In summer, few days are below 30 degrees in Evora. And if you enjoy a drink on the terrace even in winter, there is no doubt that you will love living in the Alentejo.

To live in fullness with Nature A vast territory, the Alentejo is famous for its olive and oak plantations, which produce more than half of the world's cork supply. From golden plains to arid hills, from hilly vineyards to wild coastlines, the region is a real paradise for hiking, horseback riding or cycling.

For the pleasure of tradition and well-living A vast wine region, producing excellent wines, the Alentejo also has a cuisine based on succulent local products, olive oil of course, cold cuts from Portalegre, raw ham from Barrancos, cheeses from Nisa and Serpa, cake from Évora, sericaia from Elvas (plum dessert), not to mention the seafood on the coast. With abundant and quality local products, lovers of good food will not be disappointed to come and live in the Alentejo.

INVEST IN REAL ESTATE IN ALENTEJO The Alentejo is one of the true gems of Portugal. While the Algarve, Lisbon, and Porto may claim the limelight, nothing comes close to the calm tranquility of the Alentejo. From the Alentejo coast to the many quaint picturesque villages in is interior, you have many destinations to choose from. Famous for its cork oaks and olive oil, real estate in Alentejo is an excellent option if you are looking for an authentic Portuguese experience and a peaceful lifestyle.

Buying a house in Alentejo, like anywhere in Portugal, is perfectly possible for foreigners and there are no restrictions in place for you. When it comes to buying property in Alentejo, you will be able to find many properties at very affordable rates. It is important to note, however, that some properties on the Alentejo coast can be expensive, such as Comporta and Melides. Indeed, luxury properties will come with a much higher price tag, although should still be reasonable when compared to the equivalent properties in neighboring countries. Alentejo will remain eligible for the Portugal Golden Visa after the changes that came into force on 1 January 2022 in areas that are considered “interior” areas. There is also a 20% discount if the property is in a “low-density” area. Many properties in the Alentejo will fit this bill, although coastal areas may not, apart from those for commercial/turistical use.

THE TRADITIONAL ARCHITECTURE Alentejo, has great architectural richness, such as the cities of Elvas and Évora that are part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Among all these treasures, one cannot forget the typical houses, which have remained over time and that shape the landscape. It was the populations that created this architectural style, fundamentally with a practical function: welcoming families and keeping them in the warm environment. The presence of the Arabs in the Iberian peninsula from 710 left unimaginable shrews in this Portuguese region. They influenced elements of this type of construction. However, it is noted that the colorful frames are also significant of Roman architecture and therefore of its influence in Portugal.

These houses are located in the rural areas of Alentejo and usually have a single ground floor. They are made with mud or also with bricks whose dimensions and shapes may vary. The exterior facades appear almost all white, surrounded by brighter colors on the contours of the windows, doors and the bottom of the facades (for example, orange, red, green or blue). The choice of these colors is not accidental: it prevented insects and evil spirits from invain the house.

The windows are placed so that the house stays cool on the hot days of the Alentejo summer, but also so that the interior environment is warm in winter. There is little light that enters this type of houses due to the rather small windows. Additionally, the Alentejo houses were built with thick walls for a better adaptation to the seasons (freshness in summer and heat in winter). Today's architects imagine houses that follow this Alentejo style, adding a more modern touch. Unfortunately, we all want a bright interior, which is why you can see that the windows are multiplied in the modern buildings of Alentejo mainly because it is a region that enjoys a lot of sun. Bifamily villas, houses or tourist sites can be completely revised to adapt to the particularities of Alentejo architecture from the point of view of colors and layout.

In the Alentejo region, a clearly Mediterranean climate predominates, hot, dry and sunny, with strong continental influence, which translates into unique conditions for the cultivation of vines. The landscape is composed of extensive plains and hills, predominantly the soils of clay, granite, limestone and shale.

In Alentejo there are numerous varieties planted. Alentejo red wines are generally intense, fullbodied, rich in tannins and with aromas of wild and red fruits. Whites are soft, fresh, aromatic and have tropical fruit aromas. To know the enogastronomic culture of the region nothing better than visiting a winery, where you can know the whole process of wine production, the facilities, the vineyards, as well as taste the real Alentejo nectar, accompanied by delicacies of the local gastronomy.

The region is also rich in leisure activities linked to wine, such as the Festival of Vine and Wine in Borba, held annually at the end of summer. There are also places to visit, the Redondo Wine Museum, in which are exhibited various aspects of the Alentejo wine making activity, or even the Tasting Room of the Alentejo Wine Route, in Évora, a World Heritage city.

GASTRONOMIC TRADITION The Alentejo is famous for being one of the besteating regions in Portugal. Don't expect great modernity or Michelin stars (which even has!), but well made food, well served, real comfort food. Rich in flavors and palates, Alentejo cuisine is closely related to the products of the countryside, of the earth, which essentially provides bread, olive oil and aromatic herbs.

Get ready to taste good cod, or the famous fish “cação” soup. Tender pies, duck rice... are famous the cheeks of black pig, or the partridge in the style of the Convent of the Cartuxa. The grilled octopus, or in salad, or tuna tartar, are some of tradition of the interior area, others of the coastal strip. For more far-fetched creations, there is an Alentejo restaurant that owns a Michelin star. A tradition that comes from afar and brings spice aromas from Arab and Jewish markets, both by land or by sea, being the case of cinnamon that enters the composition of many traditional sweets. Most Alentejo cakes and pastries have conventual origin, having as main ingredients sugar, eggs, bread, milk, cheese, curd, cinnamon, almond, but secrets remain in sacred hands, passed down from generation to generation. There are many more and for all tastes. Drinks to accompany also there is no shortage, of popular or conventual origin, and some excellent liqueurs are produced.
