Why Portugal NOW

Sintra is a small town located about 30 km (19 miles) west of Lisbon and life there couldn’t be more different from the vibrant life of the Portuguese capital. It is the gateway to the Natural Park of Sintra and Cascais, which besides stunningly beautiful forests, is home to some palaces and castles that seem to come straight from the most beloved fairy tales. Sintra is a chilled town with a high quality of life that allows you to live a relaxed lifestyle. The town of Sintra itself is divided into two areas: the old town which is the popular tourist destination with its beautiful National Palace and the new town with a large commercial area, containing shopping centres and some multinational companies that you would probably not expect to be based here on the edge of the Portuguese capital. These and other reasons that I want to make you known in this edition of WHY PORTUGAL NOW make Sintra an excellent option for those who want to settle in Portugal

WHY CHOOSE SINTRA TO LIVE?

If fairytale-like charm and a relaxed approach to life are your goals, then living in Sintra could provide your ultimate paradise! Located not far from the Atlantic coastline of Portugal and only a 30-minute train ride from the country’s capital Lisbon, Sintra is an idyllic location. It boasts a positively dizzying array of cultural heritage and natural beauty—with palaces, castles, tunnels, lakes, forests, towers, grottoes, and beaches all within mere minutes of each other. The locals have a penchant for painting their homes in bewitchingly bright colours, which together mimic the fantastically multi-hued palette of the enormous Pena National Palace that stands proudly in the hills above. Beyond a charming central aesthetic, living in Sintra offers an extraordinary diversity of architectural and historic treasures. A Moorish castle can be seen in one direction, and the aforementioned Palácio de Pena in another. In Sintra’s central square, the medieval Palace of Sintra—yes that’s right, another palace—serves as a museum to explore.

The area around Sintra offers some of the most spectacular scenery in all of Portugal. Living in Sintra means you have access to meandering ancient woodland and can enjoy hours of scenic hiking between the many local monuments. If you love nothing more than exploring nature trails and immersion in mature forestland, then Sintra should certainly be on your short-list.

The Monastery and National Palace of Mafra, affords a rewarding experience. Construction of the palace began in 1717 on the orders of King João V to honor the birth of the monarch's first child. The whole complex covers 40,000 square meters and has more than 1,200 rooms, 5,000 doors and windows, and 156 staircases - a wildly exuberant statement of Baroque magnificence, extravagance, and iron-fisted royal power. The National Palace of Queluz was built between 1747 and 1794 for King Pedro and his wife, later Queen Maria I, this is one of Portugal's most sumptuous palaces, and is a landmark of both Portuguese architecture and landscape design. As much a museum as historic monument, the significant collection reflects the extravagant taste of the 18th- and 19th-century courts, and includes Baroque, Rococo, and Neoclassical pieces. Crowning the Serra of Sintra, is the fantastical, Palácio da Pena. the Palace was built on the site of a former convent of friars. It was the fruit of the imagination of D. Fernando de Saxe Coburg-Gotha, who married Queen Maria II in 1836. Passionate about Sintra, he decided to acquire the convent and the surrounding lands to build the summer palace of the royal family. The Palace of Monserrate is surrounded by a fantastic romantic park created in the eighteenth century, where spontaneous species from Portugal and others from the five continents were combined in the garden, proposing a walk through the flora of the world from Australia, Mexico and Japan. In total, there are more than 2500 species National Palace of Sintra stands in the heart of the old town and is recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. Built in the 14th century by King João I on a site once occupied by a Moorish castle, the palace is immediately discernible by its two conical chimneys. With its richly decorated rooms, galleries, and corridors, the interior dazzles with an eclectic flourish of Moorish, Gothic, and Manueline architectural styles.

MYSTICISM AND ESOTERISM

The Serra de Sintra is a mystical place, fertile in legends and mysteries. Nature and the occult have been going hand in hand for a long time in Sintra. The existing farms and palaces have created the ideal settings for breathtaking myths and stories. Esoteric forces, places with supernatural powers, tragic legends of love and even the existence of witches, are some of the legends associated with Sintra. The Romans called the Serra de Sintra "Mons Lunae" and even today this space is known by that name.

The forest that surrounds Sintra combines with harmony heritage and nature. In the lush parks of Pena and Regaleira, and Pena palace, it may feel you are following an initiation trip or, simply read the symbols and what was meant to be. Quinta da Regaleira and Pena Park and Palace were owned respectively by Augusto Carvalho Monteiro and King Fernando II, who were supposedly masters of a secret society Rosecrucians - that this esoteric order is also linked with the Templars. Sintra is full of legends and stories of haunted houses and caves where fairies weep for impossible loves. But the most enigmatic and mystical place in Sintra may even be Quinta da Regaleira. Its esoteric symbology blends with the different architectural styles and surrounding vegetation, creating the perfect setting to give wide to the imagination of those who appreciate mysterious stories. It is also all these people who make Sintra one of the places of Portugal where living is so special

Is golden soft sand beaches bathed by the pure Atlantic waters offering exceptional conditions for sunbathing, water sports such as all kinds of surf, fishing and paragliding Ursa is a little beach many consider to be the most beautiful beach in Portugal. Unpolluted and clean, sharp escarpment between cliffs, waterfalls and numerous rocks supply an almost unlimited source of breathtaking pictures. Praia das Maçãs (Apple beach) is one of the most popular beaches. The name comes from the fact that once upon a time apples would fall off trees upstream of the river that flows along the southern side of the beach. One reason for the popularity of this beach is the tram line which connects Praia das Maçãs to Sintra during the Summer months. Azenhas do Mar is located in a picturesque valley with white houses perched on the Northern Slope. An ocean pool has been built as the sand was nearly completely submersed during the high tides. It is a quite popular spot all year long due to the spectacular sceneries offered by the place. Protected by tall cliffs, São Julião covers a long stretch of sand that begins around 8.5 kilometres. Ideal for long walks along the shore, the strong waves breaking on São Julião Beach create very favourable conditions for surfing and bodyboarding. Ericeira is a traditional fishing village with history dating all the way back to the 12th century. The village is famous for being the first World Surfing Reserve in Europe. But next to surfing you can of course also practise many other water sports such as fishing or paddle boarding.

WINE CELLARS Colares wine boasts an incomparable history from the birth of the nation throughour days. Vines which are planted in sandy soils and maritime climates must be handled with great care and must be cultivated in smallscale vineyards which are worked manually. As well as being produced under very special microclimatic conditions, these vines come from native grape varieties such as Ramisco (red) and Malvasia de Colares (white) and are highly appreciated by some of the most respected names in international oenology. As a result of the combination of human and viticulturist factors, each bottle constitutes a very special heritage and is a veritable collector's item.

REGIONAL GASTRONOMY Sintras gastronomy is varied and rich and will make any "foodie's" mouth water. Of the meat dishes, highlights include Negrais suckling pig (leitão de Negrais), Mercês pork (carne de porco às Mercês) and roasted lamb and veal. The coastline along the region of Sintra boasts an abundance of white fish, seafood and shellfish. So you can enjoy a mouth-watering black bass or sea bream, a delectable octopus or some tasty mussels and barnacles. As far as sweets are concerned we must inevitably highlight the “queijadas de Sintra” (Sintra tartlets), an ancient sweet which dates back to, at least, the Middle Ages. But there are others that should be tasted: “travesseiros”, “pastéis da Pena”, “nozes de Galamares”, “fofos de Belas” in addition to jam produced according to traditional preparation methods. Colares wine is an indispensable addition to any meal, particularly the famous Ramisco variety which is one of the top wines on the Portuguese wine list. The senses become refined. The delicacies are a delight to behold... and to taste.
