Why Portugal Now

June is the month of the Popular Saints with festivals throughout Portugal on the nights of Santo António, São João and São Pedro. The main ones are the Festivals of Lisbon, from 12 to 13 June, the day of Santo António, and those of Porto, on the night of June 23 to 24, when the S. João is celebrated. They are very lively parties, in which the population comes to the street to eat, drink and have fun in the streets of popular neighborhoods, decorated with arches, colorful balloons and manjericos. On June 29, São Pedro is also celebrated, also with popular festivals in various locations in the country, such as Sintra or Évora, both on the World Heritage list. Évora, moreover, has the particularity of celebrating two popular saints, as it has been performing since the XVIth century. the fair of St. John, one of the largest in the southern region of Portugal, also commemorating the day of St. Peter as a municipal holiday. It is these festivals, their origins and traditions that I want to make known to you in this edition of WHY PORTUGAL NOW

THE CALENDAR The three popular saints are Anthony, John, and Peter, and each Portuguese region, from the Portuguese-Spanish border in the north all the way down and through Algarve, celebrates one in particular.

In Lisbon, St. Anthony or Santo António, gives Lisboetas a reason to party, and in Porto, St. John the Baptist (São João do Porto) is celebrated. The festivals of St. Anthony, Lisbon’s patron saint of blessings, are the first on the calendar and take place on June 12 and 13. These are easily the most interesting days to be in the capital city as parades, parties, and even wedding bells fill the streets and close down traffic in the oldest neighborhoods, particularly Alfama, Mouraria, and Graça. During these days, and sometimes during the days leading up, locals pour out of their homes and fill the cobblestone streets to dance, eat, drink, and be merry. The parties go on all night on Friday and Saturday evenings— heading home before sunrise is considered too early to call it a night. The festivals for St. John take place with equally energetic parties in Porto on June 23–24, and the kickoff parade marches along Avenida dos Aliados. Portugal’s second largest city also has its own unique traditions, which include locals hitting each other over the head with garlic or plastic hammers and collectively releasing hot air balloons. Anyone visiting Porto will also appreciate the fireworks which fill the night sky over the Douro River. The last cluster of parties celebrates St. Peter, the patron saint of fishermen, on June 29. Sintra is one city in particular that focuses its energies on this day. Typical activities include more parades and boat blessings.

MANJERICO It's known as the valentine's weed. According to tradition, the boys gave a small clay vase with a manjerico to their girlfriends, at the time of St. Anthony, the Holy Matchman. Offering a manjerico meant a commitment as strong as a marriage proposal. The girlfriend, when receiving the manjerico, was supposed to take care of the plant for a year until the manjerico was replaced on The Day of St. Anthony the following year. Is an aromatic herb that grows in spring and, by the height of St. Anthony, already has the ideal size to take off the ground and put in pots. It is a very sensitive plant and needs great care. There are many people who believe that you can't smell the manjerico directly, but those who master botany say that this is a myth and that the manjericos last a short time anyway...

WEDDINGS OF ST ANTHONY

AT IS GOING N LISBON ?

St. Anthony is known as the Holy Bead, so he patronises love. In 1958 for the first time, 36 couples were united by marriage in the Church of St. Anthony. The goal of the initiative, sponsored by a daily newspaper, was to enable marriage to couples with financial difficulties. After 16 years of popular editions, the tradition was interrupted in 1974. Thirty years later, the City Council of Lisbon recovered the weddings for the same purpose of providing 16 couples with a memorable day.

The popular marches fill the streets of the whole country, but the best known are those of Lisbon in honor of Santo António, patron saint of the city. They date back to 1932, when the first competitive marches were organized, under the guidance of a famous filmmaker, Leitão de Barros. The Popular Saints were already celebrated on the streets of the city and there was the memory of the March to the flambó of the 18th century, or the "old popular marches" of each neighborhood, also called ranchadas. Nowadays, every year, on the night of St. Anthony, children, young people and adults dressed strictly, with the arches in hand, their music and choreography are the pride of their neighborhood, when parading along Avenida da Liberdade.

THE CASCADES

One of the main attractions of São João in Porto and one of the oldest traditions of the city. They tell stories and secrets of the city. According to history appeared in the XIX century and were a kind of Christmas nativity scene, with the Popular Saints instead of the holy family and the magi.

WHAT ON IN

The tradition remains, although there are fewer waterfalls nowadays. In addition to the images of São João, São Pedro and Santo António, there is a little: the Cathedral, the Clérigos Tower, the Douro River with the traditional bridges and rabelos boats, fishermen, fish and shells. Each waterfall is different and each of them tells a unique story that unites tradition with creativity.

The fireworks are one of the highlights of the Popular Saints, eagerly awaited by all. Everywhere where the Popular Saints are celebrated there are fireworks, but it is worth mentioning the pyrotechnic spectacle launched from the Luiz I Bridge, and several platforms on the Douro River that fill the skies of Porto on the night of São João. Watching the approximately 20 minutes of fireworks at Ribeira do Porto is undoubtedly a memorable event.

T IS GOING N PORTO ?

LEEK AND PLASTIC HAMMER In the mid-19th century, there were three distinct festivities in the Neighborhoods of Lapa, Cedofeita and Bonfim. People moved between the different festivities in large groups, who caught wild leeks along the way they led home. They put him behind the front door to protect his house from evil spirits all the next year.

It was also used by boys as a way to make contact with the girls they crossed paths with during the holidays. More recently, leeks have been dethroned by plastic hammers, which serve to hit people in the head. The hammers are quite colorful and make a shrill noise when you hit them, in addition to having a whistle at the end. They represent the "awakening" of the city and people to the joys of summer, after a dark and sad winter.

The grilled sardine is a traditional dish of Portuguese cuisine that you can eat all year round, but gains another flavor during the Popular Saints. During the month of June can not miss a "sardine" in each house. The abundance of this fish on the Portuguese coast and the great fishing tradition explain the strong presence of sardines at the table of the Portuguese.

THE MONTH OF SARDINES The best way to cook the sardines is to prepare them the day before and season them with coarse salt, place them on a double grill over the embers, without flame, over low heat, usually accompanied with roasted pepper also on the coals and boiled potatoes. Experts in the art of sardines say that they should be savored on top of a thick slice of bread that absorbs their natural fat.

In addition to the roasted sardines, on the night of St. Anthony is part of the tradition to eat green broth, grilled pork, pepper salad and top the meal with a sweet rice covered with cinnamon, all accompanied with a good Ginja Liqueur!

LISBOA VERSUS PORTO

In addition to the roasted sardines, on the night of St. John is part of the tradition to eat a broth" caldo verde", lamb, pepper salad and end the meal with a sweet cream milk covered with burned sugar or Cake of St. John, all accompanied with a good Port Wine!

Regatta of the Rabelos Boats On June 24, at Porto there is the famous Regatta of the Rabelos Boats, in which the boats that adorn the Douro River every day sail from Foz to the D. Luís Bridge, competing for first place! This initiative is organized by the Confraria do Vinho do Porto, to promote port wine and the brands of this wine. With sails erected, with the name of the Port Wine firms to which they belong, the boats go up the river, and in the end, the prizes are delivered in front of Casa Sandeman, with lots of music and animation. The Rabelos boats are traditional boats that, in the old days, transported the barrels of the Port Wine of the Alto Douro, where the vineyards are located, to Vila Nova de Gaia, where it was stored and then marketed from Porto to the whole world.

Historically, Rabelos Boats were used to transport the barrels of Port Wine from the farms of the Douro region to the cellars, in Gaia, where the wine was aging. Currently, these boats are used more as a tourist attraction for tours and of course the traditional regatta. Organized by the Douro and Port Wine Institute (IVDP), this regatta where in each sail the boats carry the mark they represent, also serves to mark the beginning of the Douro and Porto Wine Route. The initiative aims to "contribute to enrich the experience of tourists in the discovery and experience in the Douro Demarcated Region, World Heritage", as explained by the IVDP itself, and will promote farms, wineries, restaurants and other agents that have visit programs or experience with wines.
