EVORA

49 252 habitants This crumbling, sleepy town might be most famous for its fantastically preserved Roman temple, but its historic centre has stories from every era. Home to Portugal’s kings in the 15th century, its features have been sculpted by Celts, Visigoths, Lusitanians and Moors. There you can discover ornate buildings like the dainty azulejo-tiled Igreja dos Lóios, or the eerie bones and skulls lining the Church of St Francis. Along with Elvas, it’s one of a handful of Portuguese towns designated as a Unesco World Heritage site.

BEJA

23 400 habitants The main city of Baixo Alentejo, is a quiet and welcoming city. Has existed ever since the Celts and, after many battles and historical milestones, the city has become a popular spot. Despite having a beautiful walled centre and fascinating places within walking distance, it does not have many tourists. Its picturesque squares, good restaurants and inexpensive lodging make it an ideal combination for a purely Portuguese experience. In is Castle, you can find the tallest tower in the Iberian Peninsula.

ELVAS

17 625 habitants The biggest fortified city in Europe is a faded beauty, and well worth the two-hour road trip east from Lisbon. History buffs will love the unvarnished, crenellated castle, while romantics will lap up the pretty white-and-peach alleys that branch off of it. Stumble upon fondant-fancy mansions and churches trimming the city squares, as well as fabulous viewpoints from the city walls. There are spectacular historic sites just minutes from the historic centre, too. The fourtiered Amoreira Aqueduct or the immaculately star-shaped city walls of the Fort of Nossa Senhora da Graça.

WHY INVEST IN REAL ESTATE IN ALENTEJO

This vast region has a lot of advantages. The climate is warm and dry in the summer. Rain is quite rare in the summer months. Winters are milder, with some rain — so you get golden plains in the summer, and green plains in the winter. Good infrastructure, easy driving, and no crowds. The region also has a lower cost of living than the bigger cities — with easy access to beaches, rivers, cycling, hiking and the outdoors. The Alentejo offers great options such as a townhouse or a rural farm. The options run from a sweet little house in the center of a historic town or walled village, to a Monte, a traditional farm, set in the middle of cork forest and with a pool. Currently there are four main train lines to the Alentejo, connecting to Évora, Beja and Santarém as well as Portalegre. But, new plans call for expansion of rail service to Estremoz and Elvas, with an eventual link to Seville, Spain. Healthcare is a big point for many, with Portugal’s excellent national health service open to all. While hospitals are only found in main cities, clinics are in smaller towns, including a lot of new private clinics and pharmacies offering affordable services. The internet can be easy to access, with fiber networks reaching rural places with fast affordable service. Get legal help. Portugal’s laws are quite different in terms of real estate, and a good Portuguese attorney will not only save you money, but help avoid problems in advance.

Start with an international firm that has local offices, as the level of service may be closer to what you expect at home.

Food in Alentejo Everywhere in Portugal, no matter the region, you will always eat great food. The gastronomy in Portugal is simply amazing and it has great variety and much to offer.

In Alentejo, one might say the food is even more special. You will find some dishes that are unique and delicious.

Traditional Alentejo cuisine is based on the inescapable pork, whose distinct taste is often influenced by their cork tree acorn diet, lamb and bread. The main ingredients are added local spices that grow freely in the plains and near the streams. Or they are cultivated in the gardens and fields and then simply harvest or use ancestral techniques of, for example, production of Alentejo as olive oil. Among many other dishes, Alentejo gastronomy is immediately identified in "açordas" or bread soups. They consist of simple but tasty broths in which one dips the Alentejo bread to give body. To eat before, during or after we can not forget the cured cheeses, sausages, olives, ham,... The desserts will seek recipes to the convent tradition, where the sweets are made from eggs, almonds and gila. Stand out the "pão de rala", "encharcadas" and "barrigas de freira", (the bellies of nun).
