THE BASICS Family is very important in Portugal, and family is seen as vital to social interactions within the country. Traditionally, children would stay close to home, even as adults, so they can help care for their parents, and to attend regular family gatherings, although this is not always the case in modern times. Families in Portugal can be quite large, and extended families enjoy coming together for special occasions.

Outside of work, the Portuguese are very social and enjoy a wide range of activities. Sport is extremely popular in the country, both to play and to watch. Football is by far the most popular sport, but rugby, cycling, basketball, and tennis are also enjoyed by many. Dining out, travel, and attending concerts, shows, and the theatre is also enjoyed by many in Portugal.

In a wider context, Portugal has a rich history in music and the arts, seen in the Celticinfluenced folklore of the north and in the Moorish architecture and musical legacy of the south. Either of the country’s major cities, Lisbon and Porto, will satisfy any yearning for a regular cultural fix. The Portuguese language became synthesized in the 12th century, when a lyrical quality was outstanding in both poetry and prose. Lyric poetry still flourishes. The tendency of fiction has been away from the romanticism of the 19th and early 20th centuries and toward realism. With the revolution and the end of the dictatorship in 1974, literature flourished; among the notable figures of the post revolutionary period Admired novelists in the late 20th and early 21st centuries included José Saramago, the last of whom won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1998.

Portugal has a reputation for producing great footballers (Eusebio, Luis Figo, Ronaldo), if not a similarly creditable record in winning international trophies. That all changed in July 2016 when the national team became European champions .In the 21st century his feats were rivaled by those of Cristiano Ronaldo, Portugal’s biggest football star in a generation. As elsewhere in much of Europe, basketball has grown in popularity. In individual events Portugal’s long-distance runners have proved exceptional, winning Olympic gold medals and world championships. Portugal’s long seacoast and mild climate make beach going a popular pastime, particularly in the Algarve. The country is also well known throughout the world for its many championship-level golf courses, especially in the south. In the 1990s Portuguese entrepreneurs began promoting Portugal as an ocean sports destination, drawing on a strong local tradition of sailing and surfboarding. As a result of this effort, the country has become a center for surf, or scuba diving, with a number of attractive sites Visits to Portugal’s many national parks are among the other popular recreational activities in the country.

A LAND OF SPORTS AND LEISURE

WHY PORTUGAL

This magnificent building originating from the 16th century (built in 1560), intended for the gathering of nuns of Torrão is dedicated to Santa Marta, and a true jewel of the Secular Architectural Heritage of Alentejo. Located in Torrão, 77 mi from the center of Lisbon, and 39 mi from the sands of Comporta, the most elegant area of beaches South of Lisbon, suffers high damage with the earthquake of 1755, ruining part of the cloister. In the 20th century it was sold to a private who turned the church into a barn, and later into a furniture warehouse. It consists of two floors, being the ground floor warehouse, with 4 large rooms and patio, and the upper with 6 rooms. Affecting the use of warehouse and industrial activity, is classified as Architectural Heritage, but not considered as protected building. Rich in Historical Heritage is close to the Vale de Gaio Dam, providing conditions for the practice of the most varied leisure, sports and tourism activities.

THE PORTUG Portuguese cuisine is primarily based on hearty peasant food and a Mediterranean diet. Seafood lovers will no doubt enjoy the impact of the country’s long Atlantic coastline on traditional dishes. Flavors and ingredients also vary across the different regions of Portugal. Another distinctively Portuguese gift to the world is its extensive culinary influence. Not only are Portuguese missionaries said to have introduced tempura to Japan in the 16th century, but the British staple of fried fish (peixe frito) came from Portugal a century later. If that weren’t surprising enough, Indian food would be a lot blander if the chilli pepper hadn’t been introduced by Portuguese traders to India around the same time. It is no secret that Piri Piri sauce is a Portuguese invention.

GUESE DIET

No whistlestop tour of Portugal’s cultural tradition would be complete without reference to the importance of the Portuguese people’s ongoing love affair with coffee. On Lisbon’s leafy Avenida da Liberdade it is impossible to progress more than a hundred metres without passing a coffee hut or café selling a cup of bica for not much more than one euro. The Portuguese coffee culture brings people together, and the tradition of taking a coffee break mid-morning and/or after lunch is firmly entrenched in the national psyche.

FOOD

Portugal’s waters abound with fresh fish, the dried salted codfish known as bacalhau, now often imported, is considered the national dish. A seafood stew known as cataplana (for the hammered copper clamshell-style vessel in which it is cooked) is common throughout the country. In many areas meat is seldom eaten, although the Alentejo region is known for its pork and Trás-osMontes for cured meats. Cozido a portuguesa, a stew made with meats and vegetables, is a popular dish.

Breads, cakes, and sweets—the last one a legacy of Moorish occupation—take a variety of forms, with many regional specialties. Portugal is well known for its wide variety of cheeses.

THE PORTUGUESE ON VACATION

WE ARE EVERYWHERE WE ARE GLOBAL AGENTS https://youtu.be/U7FmmdOHhZA

Nowadays the Portuguese have between 22 and 25 working days of vacation per year, not counting weekends and holidays. Many Portuguese take advantage of the summer holidays to go outside the country, but most decide to spend the summer in Portugal The majority of the population lives on the Coast, especially near the cities of Lisbon and Porto, the largest cities in the country. After spending a whole year living in or near the city, most Portuguese want to go away from the urban environment, usually to the beach. Most Portuguese like to spend the summer by the sea. In the North of Portugal, people go to small towns at the foot of the sea such as Caminha, Esposende or Póvoa de Varzim, or go to the Gerês National Park. Further south we reach the city of Coimbra, which in summer is deserted. Many people from Coimbra go to Figueira da Foz, a small town on the coast, just 50 km away.

As for the Lisbon region, the capital of Portugal. People usually go to the beaches on the West Coast, for example Nazaré, Peniche and Ericeira, which are very famous areas for surfing, or else go a little further south to the beaches of the Alentejo region, Comporta or the Costa Vicentina. Wilder beaches with less urban development, preferred by people who want a quieter holiday.

Continuing to the South of the country, we finally arrived in the region where most Portuguese from all over the country will spend holidays, the Algarve region. Fishing area, is historically the most touristic region of Portugal. There is still talk of the two archipelagos of Portugal: Madeira and the Azores.
