Sensation Magazine

End-Of-Summer Issue 2013 Words by Editor Zoe Williams

Summers in Abersoch are typically the stuff of dreams, and even more so this year with the incredible heatwave we were treated to - we don’t know about you, but we lost count of how many BBQ’s we attended, hosted and of course, ate in July! With that, we’re bringing you our end-of-summer issue of Sensation to help you finish off the season with a bang. Not only do we have a full schedule of upcoming events to help map out your final days of summer (see pages 86-88), we’ve got the lowdown on the latest trends for August and beyond on pages 52 - 60, to make sure you’re looking good for all those summer finale parties and festivities! We’ve also got a fascinating piece on the history of Abersoch’s RNLI on pages 44-50, as well as the full review of wakeboarding and music festival Wakestock 2013 on pages 8284. 8 | Abersoch Sensation Magazine | Autumn 2013

If that isn’t enough, we’ve got an exclusive interview with the talented shutterbug Toria Brightside on pages 38-42 - have a read and you’ll soon see that this lady is on an ascent to stardom! With the baking craze at an all-time high, we took a peek inside the Instagram accounts of three local baking businesses - should you find yourself craving something homemade and delicious, count yourselves lucky that you’ve got three baking names to choose from who can whip something up for you in no time! See pages 70-72 and prepare your eyes (and sweet tooth!) for some mouthwatering treats. Finally, if you’re looking to shake up your usual beach locale for a little bit of variety, we have handpicked 5 beaches to cater for your different needs. Have a look at which ones made the list on pages 26-28, then hit the sand to read the rest of Sensation magazine and soak up those last few summer rays. See you in the Autumn!

Fel arfer, mae tymore yr hâf yn Abersoch yn baradwys ac mae hyn hyd yn oed fwy wir eleni gyda’r tywydd poeth anhygoel rydym wedi’w cael - ni wyddon amdonoch chi, ond rydym wedi cotti cyfrif ar y nifer o BBQ rydym wedi ei fynychi a muynhai ymmis gorffennaf ! SOCH PRESS What’s news around Abersoch?

Oriel Plas Glyn-y-Weddw

The programme of outdoor events continues at Oriel Plas Glyn-y-Weddw in Llanbedrog throughout August with something for everyone to enjoy. Held in the Gallery’s new outdoor theatre space overlooking Cardigan Bay, it’s the perfect setting for a summer evening’s entertainment. The renowned Illyria Theatre Company have already brought two wonderful performances to the Plas with The Mikado and As You Like It, and this month we have a night out for the family when Illyria bring Babe, The Sheep Pig to the John Andrews stage on August 15th. Dick King-Smith’s heartwarming tale of friendship, courage and determination is vividly brought to life by the same creative team behind Illyria’s classical productions. Farmer Hoggett wins a piglet at the fair - and everyone knows what fate awaits piglets raised on a farm. Adopted by Fly the sheepdog, Babe develops his own methods of herding sheep using politeness instead of barking orders, and even saves the flock from being stolen by sheep rustlers. But Farmer Hoggett is a hard man to please - so when Babe is entered for the county sheep dog trials he is going to need Fly’s help, all his wits, and as much politeness as he can muster if he is going to get the sheep to co-operate, win the trials, and save his life. Suitable for the over 5‘s. Gates open 6.30pm, Performance 7pm. Adult tickets: £10, Under 14’s: £5.00 Tickets from the Illyria Theatre website: http://www.illyria.uk.com/#/2013. Alternatively, buy your tickets at the gallery, or call: 01758 740763. Also in August: 11th –7pm: Sunset Music – an evening of opera and musical theatre (fundraising event for NSPCC) 17th – 2pm: Llyn Ancient Monuments – lecture by Rhys Mwyn 19th – 7pm: Jazz concert with world-renowned Hungarian band Ragtime Bohéme Jazz Band on their European tour 24th – 7pm: Noson Lawen/ Folk Evening – Local talent and Bitarteant from the Basque Country 30th & 31st - 8pm: Ilkley Playhouse bring The Weir by Conor McPherson to Glyny-Weddw For more information, visit the Plas Glyn-y-Weddw website: www.oriel.org.uk

The Dining Room has moved!

The Dining Room restaurant has moved and is now in a fab new location right in the centre of the village, opposite the St. Tudwals pub. With its quirky, homely décor, The Dining Room has a very unique feel. There is outside seating too - perfect in this weather, and it’s a great spot for people watching! Specialising in local, seasonal food, The Dining Room describe their food as ‘British bistro’. There is an emphasis on fish, and the popular Fish Friday continues as usual - but don’t worry if fish is not your thing, Si also cooks a great steak! For news, offers and general info check out their website, www.thediningroomabersoch.co.uk, or for bookings call 01758 740 709. The restaurant is small and only takes one sitting (so the table is yours for the night), so be sure to book in advance!

If you’re a longtime visitor of Abersoch and its neighbouring hotspots, you will be well aware of the relaxed pace and chilled-out lifestyle that surrounds the area. Equally, if you’re a Llyn dweller, you’ll know that not many jobs come with the advantage of being able to spend your lunch hour on the beach. A midday paddle-board session in between shifts? Yes, please! Luckily for us all, the Llyn Peninsula boasts enough beaches to keep us satisfied, from the bright, busy days of summer right the way through to the depths of winter. Abersoch main beach, naturally, is our go-to waterfront paradise, but there are so many other beaches on the Llyn that hold a special place in our hearts, so we thought we’d share the love for some more awe-inspiring shores. What’s even better is that each of these seaside spots have their own unique feel, so there’s no chance of us ever getting bored, even if it’s a cloudy day. So, whether you’re a newbie to Pen Llyn’s shores and want to brush up on the beach elite, or a longtime visitor looking to unearth a hidden gem, we hope you find inspiration for beachside spots to kick back on through August and beyond.

5 Seaside Spots For The Last Days of Summer Map out the backdrop to your last days of Summer 2013 with our pick of five beautiful Llyn beaches...

| 25

1. How to get there:

Coming out of Aberdaron on the B4413, take a sharp left signposted Whistling Sands. Turn right at the crossroads after about 1.5km, then drive another 2km until you reach a junction. Turn left, then right, and another left after 500m down the farm lane that leads to Porth Iago car park. Throw £2 into the donation box, park up and take a short walk along the new Welsh coastal path before finally hitting the sand.

1.Porth Iago, Aberdaron - The Hidden Gem If you ask us, the summer season isn’t complete without at least one jaunt down to the gorgeous and secluded Porth Iago. Nestled in between the headlands of Dinas and Graig Ddu, Porth Iago is a South West-facing cove which has become a firm favourite amongst anglers and watersport enthusiasts for its clean, calm waters. Porth Iago was also marked as one of The Guardian’s top ‘secret’ beaches in Wales last month - if an accolade like that doesn’t give you a reason to visit, we don’t know what will! Consider this one your ‘hidden gem’ well and truly uncovered.

Beach combing 5 Seaside Spots For The Last Days of Summer

How to get there:

From Abersoch village, head towards Sarn Bach, and continue on the same road as if you’re heading towards Cilan, past the turning to Bwlchtocyn on your left. Take the second left turning down a single-track road, and drive for around a mile until you reach some barriers.

2.Porth Ceiriad, Bwlchtocyn - The Surfer’s Paradise Though Hell’s Mouth is one of the first places we recommend for surfers of all skill levels, and where there are plenty of waves to go around, Porth Ceiriad is the one for advanced surfers. Whether it’s waist-high swells or double over-head waves, Porth Ceiriad has got it all for you hangten folk. Known throughout the country for the speed and power of its waves, Porth Ceiriad not only packs a serious punch for surfers, it is a gorgeous beach to top up your tan on!

2. 3.The Quarry Beach, Llanbedrog - The Soul Soother How to get there:

From Abersoch main road, head towards Llanbedrog. After reaching Londis on your right, you’ll see a turning to go down the hill and you’ll drive past the Glyn-y-Weddw pub. Continue down the hill and make a right at St Pedrog’s church hall up a steep hill. This becomes a single-track road so be weary of oncoming traffic! Follow this road for around half a mile, and you’ll pass a sign for Bolmynydd camping site. Continue straight on the single-track until you reach a small junction. Turn left to stay on the beach road, and follow it all the way down to the beach car park.

Head down early to the Quarry beach if you’re looking for a spot to bathe on a hot day. Though this beach stretches all the way along to join Abersoch Harbour, the car park is tiny, and it’s a popular one with families for its calm waters and soft, golden sand. Choose left for the Quarry beach side, or right for The Warren and Abersoch Harbour. Whichever direction you choose when you get down there, you’ll be spoilt with a stunning vista of the St Tudwal’s islands. We like to descend to the Quarry beach at around 6pm on a calm evening, when there are only a couple of people left and the tide is coming in. See for yourselves, and you’ll understand why we’ve called this one the soul soother! | 27

How to get there:

From Pwllheli, head towards Morfa Nefyn on the A497, which will then turn into the B4412. Drive straight through the village, and keep following the B4412. You’ll see a sign for Nefyn & District Golf Club. Follow the road up to the car park. Park up and walk through the gates across the golf course which will lead you to the Ty Coch inn.

5.Llanbedrog - The Shore Sanctuary

The image of Llanbedrog beach in its south-facing sheltered location, looking towards the whitewashed, waterside ‘Foxhole’ 4.Porthdinllaen, Morfa Nefyn - The Award-Winner cottage is an iconic and loved one, as is the Recently, the beautiful Porthdinllaen came in third on line of candy-coloured beach huts overlooking a poll conducted by Cheapflights of the world’s best the flat, calm sea (you can rent a hut for a day or beach bars. Turn into the National Trust car park on your left, make your way down the steps and turn left to find yourself at Llanbedrog beach.

Words and Pictures by Emma Lewthwaite

DID YOU KNOW THAT? Regular visitors to Abersoch may or may not have noticed on their travels the rich Welsh heritage of the area lives on in the names of places and houses. With so many new property developments happening all the time, the new owners/property developers are strongly encouraged to name their house in Welsh to keep the language alive. The BBC Wales website has a Welsh house name generator to help in such cases, and can be found at www.bbc.co.uk/ wales/livinginwales/nameyourhouse Here are some translations of some common welsh words you may have seen around Abersoch, and a couple of things that you may not know...

Angorau The clue to this translation is in the picture. ‘Angor’ translates to ‘Anchor’ and when we get more than one it translates to ‘Angorau’.

Cartref Heulog When we take the two words from this house name we get ‘Cartref’, which is the Welsh name for ‘Home’, and ‘Heulog’ which translates to ‘Sunny’. So when we put both of these words together we get ‘Sunny Home’. We’re guessing that the sun always shines over this house!

Glantraeth To get the meaning of this Welsh house name we have to split the name into two. The first half, ‘Glan’, translates to ‘Shore’, which you also see in the Welsh name for the seaside; ‘Glan y Môr’. The second half, ‘Traeth,’ translates to ‘Beach’. So together we get ‘Beach Shore’, very appropriate for this little seaside cottage.

Glyndŵr The name Glyndŵr comes from national Welsh hero, Owain Glyndŵr, who was the last native Welsh man to hold the title of Prince of Wales. He is well- known for his involvement in the Welsh Revolt during the late 1390’s against King Henry IV of England where he fought against the English rule of Wales. The battle escalated in the 1400’s after a dispute between Owain and his English neighbour Lord Grey over stolen land, and unfortunately for Owain, the new English King sided with Lord Grey. After a long battle, Glyndŵr died in 1416, however his noble Welshman legacy still lives on today after fighting for the country’s freedom.

Tŷ’r Felin ‘Tŷ’, similar to ‘Cartref’ above, means ‘House’ in Welsh. The second word ‘Felin’ is a mutation of ‘Melin’, which translated means ‘Mill’. So when we translate the whole name we end up with ‘The Mill House’. This house could have been a working water or flour mill many years ago by the sea.

If

you were to ask the locals of Abersoch who Wyn Williams (or Wyn Talafon as he’s more commonly known) is, you could almost guarantee that almost all of them would know him and would probably speak very highly of him. An important figure in the Abersoch community, Wyn Williams has been helping with the development and improvement of the village for many years. Born in Abersoch in 1938, Wyn has lived here for almost his entire life, but his family’s history in the area stretches far beyond this. His grandfather was a founder of education in Caenarfon in 1880 and was a member of the first committee in Caernarfon. He became the headmaster of a school in Llanberis. After Wyn’s grandfather lost his wife and child, he remarried and moved to Abersoch with a business woman, opening shops across the coast of Colwyn Bay and Pwllheli. Their Pwllheli store “Lewis’ Brothers” was where Jane’s sandwich bar is now. They opened a shop in Abersoch, “Eben Williams and Drapers”, and later opened the first school here next to where the lifeboat station is now located. His grandfather was also the founder of the golf club, village hall and church in Abersoch and was a County Councillor. This is how Wyn’s family settled in Abersoch. Wyn’s wife Jean, also a local, lived on a farm named Nant in Cilan and was the eldest of three. They’ve both been happily married for 49 years, who says that romance is dead! They’ve lived in their house for over thirty years and have two daughters Miriam and Ruth. Miriam lives in London and works as a physiotherapy consultant and Ruth lives in Bangor, lecturing in the University. The nickname “Wyn Talafon” came from when he and his family lived above their shop Talafon (Londis) when he was a child. He has fond memories of Talafon and remembers when his mother ran a B&B there, similar to many local families at the time. They also let out their rooms to businesses such as The Vaynol and St. Tudwal’s when they were full. He said that he has many funny stories about the locals of Abersoch but perhaps it was best to keep quiet about them, in case he’d put his foot in it! However he did have many childhood stories and memories that he could share. When they were younger, he and his friends kept a league of cases. They would keep a list of the locals and whoever misbehaved in the village would be placed at the top. He described it as a football’s league table! All jokes aside, it’s clear that Wyn’s childhood was one filled with happy memories as he says that there was a great atmosphere. Every night, the locals would go down to the beach, no matter their age and would just socialise, ensuring that the community kept close. Ever since he can remember, the tourist industry has almost been a way of life in Abersoch, says Wyn, and that Abersoch would definitely be a deprived village without it. However, the one thing that’s changed and almost disappeared is the fishing industry, similar to many other traditions. In order to survive during the harsh winter seasons, locals would paint or sail boats for people. The old wealthy families would come down to Abersoch with cooks and nannies and for these families, locals would look after and race their boats in sailing competitions. According to Wyn, these races have been popular in Abersoch for over a century and have become a strong tradition in the area. On the day of the regatta, Wyn would sell regatta programs for 6p and remembers Abersoch being packed with people on the day and everyone having a favourite boat. During the Second World War, Wyn and his sister’s role was to count the ration coupons on a Friday night. They would sort them out into groups: the

margarine, bacon, sugar, and at the end of the war, his father sent them away to the government and in exchange, would receive money for them. When his father fell ill, Wyn had to take over the family businesses, Talafon, as he was the eldest son and therefore had to follow in the footsteps of his father. He went away for a while and became an apprentice and came back to work again. This wasn’t ideal for him as he wanted to have more time for his passion, sailing. One day however, his father asked him: “It’s either sailing or working, what’s it going to be?” and it’s clear what he chose. His experience in the business world became an important asset to Wyn as he and his business partner, Bleddyn Evans, began running businesses across Abersoch including The Bwtri. Even to this day, he owns properties in the village, so even at the age of 75, he still has his foot firmly on the property ladder! His career changed course when he was asked to become counsellor for Abersoch. Even though he wasn’t too keen on the idea at first, Wyn says that he’s enjoyed the experience as it’s opened another path in his life. It’s an educational occupation to him, seeing how the village he loves so much is run and being able to make choices for it. He said that it‘s great being able to answer people’s problems, as best as he can. He’s also one of 10 cabinet members that make decisions through the council where his role is to look at care and welfare. As a member of Plaid Cymru, he’s seen how the party has become more and more popular, even with a strong Tory influence in the village. He could remember one day after an election, a woman came up to him and said, “Don’t tell the tory people, but I voted for you!” Whenever he isn’t working, Wyn enjoys going to Cilan and Porth Neigwl for five minutes of tranquillity. He also loves walking along the beaches in Abersoch during the winter, when no-one’s there, to re-charge his batteries. 34 | Abersoch Sensation Magazine | Autumn 2013

In his opinion, the golf club in Abersoch is a key part of the village. Wyn has been a big part of the club’s history seeing as he’s been a captain at the club, even though he said that he isn’t exactly the best at the sport! A fond memory of his was when farmers of Bwlchtocyn came down with their livestock to the golf club to graze and to keep the fairways in good condition. He remembers it as being one of the most surreal situations, playing golf whilst surrounded by cows and sheep! Wyn believes that what makes Abersoch so special is that it’s independent with its own WI or “Merched y Wawr”, a centre for the elderly and a photography club. He said that whenever he enters the village often after visiting his favourite places, Cilan and Porth Neigwl, it’s sticking how full of character and unique it is. Years ago he did a survey and found that most people said “don’t change Abersoch, we know changes are going to happen, and it’s essential that they do happen, but we like the peace and quietness.” so it’s clear that he’s not the only one that has fallen in love with the village. Why wouldn’t they? As Wyn said, we have excellent events here such as the 10k, Glass Butter Beach, Wakestock, The Jazz Festival and the Swimathon, a new event for Abersoch being organised with the hope that it will be part of the British Grand Prix. Someone once told Wyn that his grandfather must have seen something in Abersoch for him to settle here so even over a century ago, the village had its charm. When I asked him how important the Welsh language is in a tourist village like Abersoch, his opinion was clear. He believes that as we respect both languages, Welsh and English, it helps us co-operate better. He’s eager to raise awareness of the Welsh language in order to get people to learn that language but people will have to want to learn in the first place. This is clearly a topic close to his heart. In the future, Wyn would like to see more services to the elderly such as more care for people with dementia seeing as statistics show that a good majority of people that live in Abersoch all year round are the elderly. He would also like to see a full sized football pitch in order to promote keeping fit and healthy. Wyn says that the council have enough money and all they need is the land. For his own future, Wyn thinks of slowing things down and perhaps taking a back bench in the cabinet because it’s hard to quit things all together. Perhaps this will give him more time to sail and to improve his golf !

Always Look On The Brightside Words by Zoe Williams Photos by Toria Brightside

Sensation recently caught up with internationally published shutterbug and fashion stylist Toria Brightside

Admittedly, we’re a bit biased, but we like to think that Abersoch is one of the most visually stunning places in Wales, and indeed, the rest of the country. Well, we found someone who would also agree with us, and the evidence is in her portfolio. Recently, internationally published photographer and fashion stylist Toria Brightside was recruited by Leeds band Scams to film the music video for their latest single ‘Lifeboats’, and we were excited to see that the backdrop to the beautifully shot video showcases familiar landmarks in Abersoch.

My favourite thing about the village has to be the little features in the landscape that make it so picturesque, The steps engraved into the rock, the cliff paintings at Porth Ceiriad. there is a magic on that coastline that will stay with me forever. I think if you spend your childhood in a charming and seemingly magical place, it really stays in your heart.'

elaxing on the veranda in the warm summer sunshine, overlooking the estuary, the bay, Abersoch harbour and the majestic mountain range beyond, there cannot arguably be any better place in the world to be. Nina Lang was born and bred in Abersoch with a long family line that goes back generations so, it is not difficult to see why she, and her husband Bob Kennedy, decided that if they were to live in Abersoch, Aberuchaf is the place they wanted to be. The house, steeped in history, now flourishes under the care of Bob and Nina, and provides a number of small businesses with studio/workshop/outlets where their handiwork can be admired and of course purchased by locals and tourists alike. Back to the history and in particular to the end of the 1980’s when Nina and Bob decided that Abersoch would be their home. Determined to see if the purchase of Aberuchaf was possible they pursued their dream on the basis of “if you don’t ask you don’t get.” At that time the property was leased to local farmers who ran a bed and breakfast business, but it was known that they would be giving the lease up at some point soon. The landlords were the family of Clough Williams Ellis – the prolific local architect who is most associated with the creation of the Italianate village, Portmeirion. Now it just so happens that it suited the Williams –Ellis family at that time to sell, so it seems that Nina and Bob’s plan of asking anyway had the benefit of excellent timing. Very few people knew about the transaction initially, although one who did was in fact my father, who at the time was the local NatWest bank manager! Once the formalities were sorted out, the deal done and it became common knowledge, there must have been a number of very disappointed people around who had been hoping they would have had an opportunity to buy it themselves. Right time right place!

Records show that there had been a building on this piece of land since the 1700’s so it was no surprise to the new owners that there was significant redevelopment work to be done. The roof needed replacing, but after they had started dismantling it they found that it was only the roof that was keeping the main walls upright. The floorboards in the main living room would have to have been very wet at various points as the rainwater from the yard would have run under them. Must have been fun for the bed and breakfast residents during the occasional rain showers we tend to get here! There was work to be done and the local builders led by Denis Claybrook, Jack “Pensarn” Williams, Wil “Goch” Russell – and Bob – got stuck in. The result was a fabulous renovation, true to the traditional layout of the house which is excellent. Not all agreed that the original house was a great template however, Clough Williams- Ellis in his autobiography, Architect Errant, recalls being packed off to Abersoch while the main house at Glasfryn was being redeveloped and describing it as “architecturally vacuous” – he was after all seven or eight years old! It wasn’t just the house itself that needed extensive renovations. The surrounding gardens needed similar tender loving care. The previous residents had set up a small market garden which supplied vegetables to the village and there were remnants of old greenhouses and buildings. Now there sits a beautiful new pond, carefully tended gardens which give the air of a free range pasture, complete with chickens and ducks. The peacocks however have long since departed. Basil, Sybil, Polly, Manuel and the General were all resident at one point, strutting their stuff around the locality, stopping buses on the main road with displays of fine feathers and screeching their presence just in case you hadn’t seen them! Bob was determined to maintain and enhance the environmental integrity of the plot of land, not just with the building but with the landscaping too. He worked hard with local suppliers and tradesmen, to ensure that the character of the plot was maintained and developed. In all some 9,000 trees and shrubs were planted to maintain the environmental integrity of the area and a fascinating circle of stones placed carefully to reflect the points of the compass and winter and summer solstice. The line of buildings alongside the house needed some thought and it was at the time that Nina’s daughter Margot and her partner Martin’s, Turtle photography business needed to move into purpose built studio accommodation. The idea therefore to develop the buildings into small units for local trades and crafts took hold. Many of the units have changed hands over the years, but Turtle Photography and Neil Hopkins’ Artist Studios have been there since day one. Why not take a walk up there and have a look for yourself, up on the road to Mynytho behind Coconut Kitchen. Sensation Magazine is very grateful to Nina Lang for her co-operation, her tour of the house, her stories, her hospitality and for allowing me just to sit on the veranda in the sun and contemplate the history of this wonderful building. 46 | Abersoch Sensation Magazine | Autumn 2013

ast your minds back before the age of digital photography, just to the back end of the 1980’s, when the only way of getting your photos was to process expensive film often finding you had spent good money on very poor images. This is how Martin Turtle started his business, not I hasten to add taking “poor” photographs, but creating a business in an age where the process of producing shots seems as alien to us now as pulling water from a well. Martin has always been taking excellent yachting action shots and regularly had his credits on photos in national magazines. He recalls that the business

started from his then home in Llanengan near The Sun public house. “We would create transparencies which we would show prospective clients by projecting the images in our front room.” Turtle Photography had, in the days before the internet, to rely on flyers, brochures and direct mail to get their photographs to possible customers. There was however another weapon in their armoury, one which works to this day, word of mouth. “We found that, especially on days when the weather was not so good for sailing, that a number of people would just knock on the front door asking to see some photos. We then had an

W

Turtle Photography

impromptu slide show in the front room while Margot (his partner and daughter of the residents of Aberuchaf) took orders in the kitchen. It was clear quite quickly that this was an unsatisfactory way of doing business, especially when there would be a knock on the door as we were settling down to watch something on TV in the evening!” This time coincided with decisions being made at Aberuchaf about what to do with the outer buildings. Turning one into a studio for Turtle Photography seemed

such a good idea that the whole row was transformed and Martin moved into the first one. In those days the small area to the left of the studio was turned into a small projection room and a dark room was created upstairs. Coming back to the modern day and the digital age, which most of the younger readers will be familiar with, the business has transformed considerably. Instant photos, different ways of mounting pictures, enhancements and of course the internet has made the business a lot easier but

of course has created its own challenges. Turtle Photography brings to you photographs that you are unlikely to be able to do yourself, even with all the latest equipment. There is vibrancy and creativity in the shots, whether they be action on the waves or landscapes, plus the location lends itself to dynamic and sensational images. Sensation magazine is proud to be associated with Turtle photography and very grateful to Martin for the excellent images we area able to use in the magazine.

The artist’s studio N

eil Hopkins’ studio has been at Aberuchaf since the beginning and he is renowned for his iconic paintings of Abersoch and the surrounding area. After various design jobs for many large companies including pottery design in Stoke, wall coverings for ICI (remember Vymura?) and subsequently as “Liaison Stylist” with ICI Motor Products designing colours and textures for leathercloth fabrics. Neil though had enough of corporate life and in 1976 bought a small holding here on the Llyn and in 1977 set his brush to paint watercolours. The rest as they say is history. His paintings have sold all around the

world and his prints are to be found bringing the beauty and vibrancy of this locality, to many a household and business wall. Neil moved to Aberuchaf as soon as he knew there was to be a redevelopment of the buildings there into studios. It is an ideal location for his work, with plenty of hanging space to show his picture with additional studio space to develop his creativity. But it is not just the love of the landscape that drives Neil, he has a passion for steam trains too, and there are many paintings of favoured trains to be seen hanging in his gallery/studio. It is well worth a visit.

he latest addition to the studios at Aberuchaf is Pen Llyn Physio. Featured in our Spring edition, Rebecca Bodde has settled into the practice, and while it might be a stretch to label physio in the realms of a craft centre, there is no doubt from her patients that she is very good with her hands. The clinic is in a really suitable location, having moved from a 1st floor shared clinic in the centre of the village, her patients now have car parking facilities, disabled toilet facilities, no stairs and a calm and peaceful physio room. Of course there’s the coffee and cupcakes at Flipside Cafe too! Rebecca is a keen runner and has offered a 10% discount to all registered runners in the half marathon. That is on anything related to the race including pre-run physiotherapy and training

Flipside jewellery S

imon Harris started Flipside Jewellery in 1998 to create jewellery that moved away from the mainstream industry, that he felt seemed to suck the life and beauty out of the materials used throughout the trade. Simon started working in the jewellery trade at the age of 14, helping his father, also a jeweller, at his shop in Cheshire. He left school at 16 to go to North Cheshire College and study CGLI Fine Jewellery. In 1995, the love of the sea and mountains drew

Simon to North Wales, where he worked in the Surf industry by day but continued to create his designs by night in a small workshop (a friend’s outside lavatory!) Little by little his simple, yet beautifully crafted, designs became increasingly popular within the local community and word quickly spread. It was at this point that Flipside was born, bringing Simon’s work to a wider audience. Flipside is based at the Abersoch Craft Centre, a beautiful and tranquil setting of converted barns, where chickens and geese

roam freely. The sea can be seen and heard (always tempting Simon out to play!) and Snowdon looms across the bay. It is this setting that inspires Simon’s designs in the Flipside core collection but increasingly, he has a reputation for his commission service, helping customers achieve their vision for the ideal piece of jewellery. All Flipside jewellery is handmade on the premises and then sent to Sheffield Assay Office for the appropriate hallmark. www.flipsidejewellery.co.uk

Debbie and Mark were in Abersoch at Debbie’s family holiday home when he decided to propose. Once the thought had entered his head he couldn’t wait another moment and so he went out into the garden to think about how to do it! It was August and the grasses were still soft and there were some early hawthorn berries around so he went to work. He fashioned a beautiful ring from twisted grasses and hawthorn berries for Debbie – and she said yes! Some weeks later, whilst at home in Cheshire, sitting round the fire with the children, the conversation turned to what kind of ring Debbie might actually have. Mark’s daughter suggested that they have the ‘grass’ ring replicated in precious metal. Debbie remembered Simon and Flipside and thought it would be lovely to have the ring made here on Pen Lleyn. Debbie and Mark came to see Simon and were involved in the creative process from the very beginning. They chose the metal and picked out the perfect coral and jade stones for the final piece. And so began this beautiful story, woven from true romance, love and a little bit of Abersoch...

ne of the newer tenants is Flipside Cafe which opened a couple of years ago. Rebecca Cooke, who is the partner of Simon next door at the jewellery shop, has been in catering for some time and when the opportunity to open an outlet came along she jumped at the chance. While the premises are small it is very well laid out and of course there are tables outside which in the fine weather we’ve been having are invaluable. Cup cakes, smoothies and celebration cakes are Rebecca’s speciality but recently she has been branching out into pasties and curries, using locally sourced ingredients such as Welsh Black beef and Cwrw Llyn (locally brewed beer as featured in a previous edition). It is well worth a visit for a

relaxing snack, and by the way the latte is delicious and the cupcakes (Rebecca’s favourite is lemon and blueberry!) are to die for!! Look up flipsidecafeandcakery on facebook.

Have Your Cake, And Instagram It Too!

Words by Zoe Williams

We sneaked a peek into the Instagram accounts of three cupcake connoisseurs who have an infectious passion for what they do. Three pages full of delectable treats lie ahead; consider your sweet tooth warned...

These days, everyone seems to be going Instagram-crazy; ever seen a gorgeous sunset in Abersoch, and snapped it on your iPhone, just so you can upload-and-filter (or #nofilter!) for all your followers to see? Yep, we’re guilty of that too. Besides sunsets, selfies and our cats doing silly things, what else are we taking pictures of ? Well, the boom of the baking trend last year is yet to dwindle, thanks to programmes like The Great British Bake Off

Flipside Cafe and Cakery

that gripped the nation in 2012, and the newest rising stars of the social landscape. Popular social platforms like Instagram and Pinterest have truly taken off in the last few years, and are the perfect places to harbour a passion for baking. Users can garner ideas and inspiration for sweet treat recipes on Pinterest, then ‘Instagram’ their bakes to friends and followers. Over the years, this mouthwatering trend has produced some wonderful success stories in Abersoch, all of which can now be digitally devoured on your phone or tablet. As we are never one to turn down a cupcake, we decided to profile three local baking businesses, and have a peek at their bakes and business lifestyles via our favourite digital medium...Instagram!

Following

Pastry purveyor and sugar specialist Rebecca Crooke opened Flipside Cafe back in May 2011, right next door to partner Simon Harris’s Flipside Jewellery, and has been relentessly cooking up a storm ever since. Flipside Cafe and Cakery not only create personalised, made-to-order treats (think cupcakes, mallow pops, tray bakes, cookies and fudge!), the beautifully bedecked cafe offers fantastic coffee, speciality teas, homemade sandwiches and daily specials, and Rebecca and her team pride themselves on using the finest quality ingredients; always free-range, and wherever possible, local. Rebecca and Simon also love to attend the monthly Abersoch Makers’ Market with their delectable treats. Their stall is always beautifully presented and kitted out in bunting aplenty, so be sure to mark your calendars for the next market on the 7th of September, and sample some of Flipside’s tasty bakes. During the rest of the month, we always make as many visits as possible to the lovely Flipside cafe, which you can find at Unit 1 of Antur Aberuchaf, Lon Garmon in Abersoch.

Not afraid of a little body art!

WAKESTOCK 2013 Words by Emma Lewthwaite

Photos by Simon Whittaker & Mari Evans

No matter what the weather, rain or shine, Wakestockers are always ready to bare all in their short shorts, however this year they didn’t have to worry about mud fake tanning their legs! Losing the rain coats meant we could experiment a bit more with festival style and make a bit more of an effort. We saw many festival goers support the hippy look with floral head pieces and lace, bold Aztec and monochrome prints and the ever popular flashy neon’s and body paint (even the boys!). But most importantly we were able to trade wellies for flip flops and ponchos for bikinis thanks to the amazing heat wave that hit us over the weekend!

I am the ship in which you sail, little dancing bones, your passage between the dream and the waking dream, your sieve, your pea-green boat. I’ll pay whatever toll your ferry needs. And you, whose history’s already charted in a rope of cells, be tender to those other unnamed vessels who will surprise you one day, tug-tugging, irresistible, and float you out beyond your depth, where you’ll look down, puzzled, amazed.
