SAND WRITING
Victoria also has plans to put the pictures on to photo gifts like mugs, phone covers and beach bags. The website can be found at www.Sand-Writing.com.
A photographer who has written hundreds of names and messages in the Abersoch sand, is set to expand her unique business. Victoria Pollitt sells canvas prints of the pictures from her new website www.Sand-Writing.com. And now she is to have the popular scenes also printed as greetings cards. Victoria first completed the painstaking task of writing the 100 most popular boys’ and girls’ names individually in the sand along with messages like Just Married and Congratulations. But now she has photographed dozens more with greetings cards in mind. Some of the new messages include Happy Birthday, Live Life to the Full and Happy Holidays. The idea for the business came after Victoria picked up a stick and wrote her son Joshua’s name in the sand and had the resulting photograph made into a canvas for his bedroom. It creates a lot of interest when she takes her pictures as the names, messages and even drawings like a heart or smiley face, end up covering the beach. “It is people who know and love the area who have been the most enthusiastic so I have also taken some with the name Abersoch included.” “I am thrilled my pictures are brightening up people’s homes with memories of holidays and happy times all year round, she added.
ABERSOCH ARTIST SUCCESS Local Abersoch artist Marion (My) Campbell has received wide public acclaim for her recent solo exhibition in the city of Denia, Spain. After several reviews, the Denia Cultural Department selected ‘My’ as the principle visiting artist in March with her exhibition, entitled ‘A Jour ney through Imagination’. The Cultural Centre was the venue for twenty five of her contemporary paintings, many of which refer to inspiration drawn from the Lleyn Peninsula. This copy of the invitation was circulated throughout the Costa Blanca region, resulting in hundreds of people visiting the exhibition. The town of Denia & Abersoch have a similar environment, in that both places are near the sea and surrounded by beautiful mountains. The positive feedback reflected different people’s interpretation of the same painting!
If you would like to see her work, why not call at her studio / gallery here in Abersoch. Just telephone her on 0797 713 9370 to arrange an appointment. Further information is available on her website - www.artmakesart.com, with images of recent paintings on her Facebook albums, at www.facebook.com/artmakesart. You do not have to be a member of Facebook to see these albums.
ABERSUP BUOYANCY AIDS
14 | Abersoch Sensation Magazine | Summer 2013
The guys at Abersup recommend that you should always follow the RYA guidance when participating in any form of water sport. Pete and Dec are both RYA trained and told Sensation “It’s a misconception that you must always wear a life jacket or buoyancy aid; the RYA guidelines (at www.rya.org.uk) are clear that the decision should be based upon the experience of the participant, the activity and the weather conditions. However, when teaching Stand Up Paddle Boarding, even though we are using what is essentially a huge float and always have a safety boat on hand, we wear buoyancy aids and insist that our clients do too. Modern buoyancy aids are not bulky, don’t restrict movement and fit nicely under our tee shirts (so much so, that on occasion, it’s not obvious that we are wearing them!) We would recommend that you wear a buoyancy aid or life jacket at all times, especially if you are out on your own; make sure it fits correctly and is sufficiently buoyant for your weight – you can get great advice and choose from a selection of high quality buoyancy aids and life jackets at either Abersoch Watersports or the Boatyard in the village

This stage is a first for Wakestock and it will not only feature music and comedy acts from across North Wales and the North West, it will also play host to acoustic sets from acts higher up on the bill. This relaxed, informal space will host signing sessions by artists, a great bar and a seated chill out area along with some classic pub favourites including a pub quiz. You won’t want to leave! The second venue for the wakeboarding is the Big Air competition on Abersoch Beach on Sunday morning. Starting at 11am it is a 2 hour jam and the winner is the guy or girl who goes biggest! Two jetskis will tow the riders around the course. They use a floating kicker to perform a trick of their choice. 18 | Abersoch Sensation Magazine | Summer 2013

Glass Butter Beach Festival 2013 Photo by Totally Abersoch
So the Early Bird tickets have already sold out, which is not surprising after the baking hot weather Abersoch has been experiencing in recent weeks. Plans for this years Glass Butter Beach festival are looking very exciting with the festivals first few acts having just been announced; Glass Butter favourite Goldierocks, Mic Righteous (who is looking to be the hottest thing in UK Hip Hop this year), The Other Tribe and Yolanda Be Cool (who produced the global hit ‘We no speak Americano’) - And there is still many more to come. Along with the awesome music and summer vibes there is of course the extreme sports element to the event which includes Skate, Surf, BMX, and the Abersoch favourite Wakeboarding. Your options are going to be endless - do you watch the pro’s or venture out to give them a go yourself. Word on the street is that there will be some free surf taster lessons headed by one of Abersoch’s pro surf academies. The fact that Glass Butter Beach is such an intimate festival has allowed for a great deal of thought to go in to the look and feel of the event for 2013. A sneak preview includes a stage that mimics a Baywatch style tower, a beach shack stage right on the waters edge, a 30 ft LED tree normally seen outside Manchester City’s football stadium and a VIP bar with arguably one of the most incredible views you’ll find at any festival period! And this is just a handful of what’s in store. Glass Butter Beach sounds like it’s primed to be the ultimate weekend of the summer and with the intimate nature of the festival it will be well worth getting tickets early.
Glass Butter Beach takes place on Fri 16th & Sat 17th August with the campsite opening on the Thursday at 2pm & closing Sunday 2pm. Full details & online tickets can be found at www.glassbutterbeach.com or for tickets over the phone call 01758 714000. Tickets are also available locally at Offaxis & Coastal Culture or Red 1 & the Tourist Office in Pwllheli.

PortS095 Abersoch’s Freshest club night
Waterborn Abersup is already open and running their tours; they can be found on the main beach slipway Stand-Up Paddle boarding (or SUP) is the world’s fastest growing water sport and offers a quick and easy way for anyone to get out and enjoy the water. Originally from Hawaii, this low impact sport involves standing on what is essentially an extra large surfboard and using a paddle to move yourself wherever you choose. The real selling point of this sport is that, unlike regular surfing, it does not require perfect conditions and can be enjoyed both on flat water and in the waves, by young and old alike. When travelling in Australia earlier this year, Pete Morrison (whose family has been in Abersoch for three generations) became aware of the huge popularity and growth of this sport, particularly in seaside towns that bore a strong resemblance to Abersoch, which led him to consider introducing the sport here. The result of this experience is Waterborn Abersup, a SUP school new to Abersoch this summer with an emphasis on fitness and an eco-friendly approach to its lessons (known as “tours”). Pete and his business partner, longterm friend and fellow Abersoch resident, Dec Penfold, started work on the old ice cream shop on the slip way with hours spent painting and clearing. The result is a clean little shop from which the business will operate.
With Pete and Dec as BSUPA qualified Instructors, and working in conjunction with some of Abersoch’s more established businesses (Abersoch Watersports and The Boatyard, to name but two), Abersup will be operating under the Waterborn brand, which already has two schools under its name in Salcombe and Kingsbridge. The brand is also in the process of developing a SUP clothing line and aiming to launch by 2014, so keep an eye out for that!
So what do Abersup offer? Throughout the summer there are various options available, ensuring that virtually anyone (individuals, couples, families and groups) can head down to the beach and have a go, with all equipment, wet suits and buoyancy aids provided. These include…

THE WARREN
Words by Zoe Williams
For its flocks of seaside fans, The Warren holiday park in Abersoch is a postcard-perfect home-from-home, and an idyllic retreat to unwind and escape to.
Call us biased, but it’s a fair point: once you’ve discovered Abersoch, you can’t help but keep coming back - undoubtedly an outstanding seaside escape, and an incredibly scenic home-from-home. No wonder, then, that Haulfryn’s most popular holiday park, The Warren, now privately gates over 700 lodges and static caravans, and snapping up a beachfront chalet, overlooking a stunning view of the Cardigan bay coastline, has been known to take over two years. Boasting a plethora of facilities to fit everyone’s fancy, The Warren has allowed the luxury of a seaside excursion to Abersoch’s smitten holidaymakers for over 70 years, and has become one of North Wales’ best (un)kept secrets.
2424 | Abersoch Sensation Magazine | Spring 20132013 | Abersoch Sensation Magazine | Summer
An Array of Facilities The Warren has played a huge part in the development of Abersoch and the Llyn Peninsula’s image as a tourist hotspot, and has created an impression of affluence thanks to the often hefty price tags of the park’s luxurious chalets, as well as its huge range of facilities on-site. These include a fully equipped gym, tennis courts, sauna, steam and tanning rooms, badminton and squash courts, archery range, a soft play area for toddlers, a games lobby for the older kids, a heated indoor pool, and three heated outdoor pools. For formal dining, The Warren offers its own exclusive members’ only restaurant for its holiday dwellers, which serves up a mouthwatering menu made up of fresh, locally sourced ingredients. For a more informal bite to eat when you’ve just spent the whole day on the beach, options include the beach cafe, the stylish main bar, or even the takeaway pizza and pasta service. Besides the array of amenities on-site, we believe the best facility that The Warren has to offer is its beach, just a stone’s throw away from any of the 700 lodges on the park. The Warren beach is the kind you’d find smattered across an array of Pinterest boards, all named ‘Great Escapes’, ‘Places To Seek’ and the like. On a hot summer’s day, we feel like we could be anywhere in the world, and just one look at the beach is enough to soothe our souls. No hard sell needed here - the sheer beauty from these beachfront bunks is breathtaking.
Making Headlines In recent years, The Warren’s sumptuous, modern chalets have made it into the newspapers thanks to their extravagant prices. In 2011, The Daily Mail published an article online entitled ‘Britain’s most expensive caravan sold for £550,000 (and you can only live there for 20 years)’, which boasted The Warren’s popularity amongst TV stars and footballers, thus confirming the park’s prestigious image. The article focused on the one particular caravan that was sold to an anonymous millionaire couple in Warrington for £550,000 (three times the average price of a house in the UK), and its luxurious interiors. The chalet features an integrated sound and television system, underfloor heating and a marble-tiled bathroom with Jacuzzi bath. The chalet is also heated using an eco-friendly system, and features reflective double-glazing, which keeps the heat out in the summer, and in during the colder, winter months. However, as extravagant as the chalets on The Warren are, the article also quotes Jim Gandon, director of sales and marketing at Haulfryn: ‘We don’t shy away from the fact it’s still essentially a static caravan.’ Thanks to the plush furnishings, opulent decor and modern fittings, the term ‘chalet’ has been coined in recent years to fit in with The Warren’s prestigious attributions. By cleverly concealing all the mobile characteristics of a static caravan, the visual image of a holiday home on The Warren has evolved from one of practicality to one of utter luxury, and the interiors certainly give the impression that these are not your standard, static caravans! All in all, it’s crystal clear why The Warren has grown into such a successful and popular spot with holidaymakers. A seaside retreat away from the daily grind in a location that can’t be beaten, we doubt there is anywhere else in the UK that can provide as much luxury or quality from a holiday.

DID YOU KNOW THAT?
Words by Emma Lewthwaite
‘Uwchmynydd’ is the very end point of the Llyn Peninsula
and probably the closest you’ll get to Bardsey Island without hopping on a boat and being on the island itself ! If we split the word in half we get ‘Uwch’ which translates to ‘Higher’ and ‘Mynydd’ which translates to ‘Mountain’, so we get; ‘Higher Mountain’. Even though it may not look like a mountain, if you reach the top it does feel quite high and on a clear, calm day you get the best views of Bardsey Island and right around the
To get the true translation of ‘Morannedd’, again we need to split the word into two separate words; ‘Mor’ and ‘Annedd’. The first half means ‘Sea’ and the second half translates to ‘A place to live’. Therefore if we put this together we get; ‘A place to live by the Sea’. One of the most popular house names around the Peninsula, and very appropriate too!
‘Pen y Bont Bach’ translates to ‘End of the Small Bridge’. The Welsh version definitely has more of a ring to it!
If we translate this house name we get ‘Over the River’. ‘Tros’ is a mutation of ‘Dros’ which means ‘Over’ and ‘Afon’ translates to ‘River’. We get ‘Y’ in the middle which means ‘the’ to fit the name together.
‘Foel Gron’ is the open heathland at the top of Mynytho. ‘Foel’ is a
mutation of ‘Moel’ which simply means ‘Bare’ or ‘Hill’. ‘Gron’ translated means ‘Round’, so together we get ‘Round Hill’. This hill in Mynytho has amazing panoramic views of Cardigan Bay and the islands, right around to Hells Mouth and Rhiw Mountain. It’s the best place if you want a peaceful walk with a variety of paths to take right around the hill.

to stay, and generally ensuring the future viability of the club.” The club is having an Extraordinary General Meeting at the time of going to press to create new categories of membership to try and meet this challenge head on. Other aspects will be looked at too, including the possibility of a kids club. The club is also looking to create closer links with other sailing clubs in the area, especially Pwllheli. The advent of the proposed National Sailing Academy (see previous Sensation magazines) is considered an opportunity to bring more sailing enthusiasts to the area while not threatening the traditional sailing base that exists around Abersoch.

So what of the present day? Well it is clear that as with all organisations, the economic difficulties have taken their toll as Pete Hawkins says “our membership drop is particularly significant in the younger age groups. Once the parents stop paying their subscriptions as juniors and students and they are setting out on their own, a subscription to a yacht club is low on the priorities. We have to devise ways of bringing this age group back, encouraging those we have
The benefits of membership are clear for those that sail, the club environment of like minded people enjoying competitive sport and the support and logistical base that the club brings is self-evident. But there are added benefits too; popping in for a drink or preferential booking at the excellent Cove restaurant is a privilege of membership. And of course there is the location and those views. Sipping a cold beer or a crisp Chardonnay on the balcony on a summer’s evening, there cannot be a better place anywhere!

A day in the Life, of an Abersoch Local Margot Lewthwaite Words by Emma Lewthwaite
Grandma to me, Mrs Lewthwaite to others and even some resemblances to the Queen, Margot Lewthwaite is a very familiar face among the locals in this village. Often seen countless times walking up and down the street to get her paper and groceries, you are sure to catch her at some point in the day and she will be more than happy to have a natter with you... Margot today
Margot in 1964 Margot was born in 1926 and grew up in the Shropshire countryside in the Prees Heath area. She was mainly brought up by her Grandma and Aunty as she lived with them the majority of the time in Whitchurch as it was easier to reach her local High School from here. As Margot grew up during the time of World War II, she was able to get a job after her time in school as a secretary in a factory which manufactured War equipment and would cycle to and from there everyday. One story she told me was a time when she was cycling back from work and a German Single Pilot Fighter Plane flew low down above her; “I just stopped and looked up hoping he wasn’t going to drop a bomb, but he just looked down at me and smiled so I just stood still and smiled back at him”. She said this image will always stick with her even though it was over 60 years ago! Even though Margot wasn’t born and brought up in the village she has spent the majority of her life here bringing up her own family. She first became familiar with Abersoch during her late teens after coming down here on summer holidays with her Aunty May and Uncle Jack, where she often stayed in Glan-Y-Don house, and it was during one of these holidays that she met her first husband Tony at 21 years old. Margot told me that she’d gone into the Vaynol one evening with her Uncle Jack for a drink and got chatting to Tony, who was quick to invite her and her Uncle on a trip to Bardsey the following day. He was ferrying two engineers back to the island, so they went along and spent the whole day on the island. The remaining days of her holiday were spent with Tony every evening after he finished work. But this wasn’t just a holiday romance, on the last day of her holiday he asked her to marry him after just 10 days! They went back to her home in Shropshire for a small wedding, and on the eve of the wedding went to visit the church where flowers from the previous Easter service had been left for their wedding. However Margot told me that when they went to the church in the morning, all of the flowers had died but luckily her Aunty saved the day and picked out all of the fresh flowers in her garden to decorate the church. It was straight after their honeymoon in Ireland that

His 14 year old sister Cari Hughes come in second overall in an exceptional time of 12 minutes 27 seconds and so took the girls U16 title and Ela Jones was crowned U14 girls winner. In the boys race as Iolo is now 16, which opened up the opportunity for a new U16 winner. Garn Jones took on the challenge & took the title in a time of 12:41, and the U14 boys crown went to 11 years old Barney Wright in 13:17. A fascinating race in that the level of some of these runners is exceptional and we could be witnessing some big stars of the future. To think that Iolo Hughes is averaging 3 minute, 25 second kilometers on this course with all its obstacles is mind blowing!

‘The Hulls of White Yachts’ by Derek Walcott The hulls of white yachts riding the orange water of the marina at dusk, and under their bowsprits the chuckle of the chain in the stained sea, trying to get there before a green light winks from the mast and the foc’sle blazes with glare, while dusk hangs in suspension with crosstrees and ropes and a lilac-livid sky with its beer stein of cloud froth touched by the sun, as stars come out to watch the evening die. In this orange hour the light reads like Dante, three lines at a time, their symetrical tension, quiet bars rippling from the Paradiso as a dinghy writes lines made by the scanty metre of its oar strokes, and we, so mesmerized can barely talk. Happier than any man now is the one who sits drinking wine with his lifelong companion under the winking stars and the steady arc lamp at the end of the pier.
