We Dundonians are famously friendly, welcoming and have a wicked sense of humour.

ABOUT DUNDEE Welcome to bonnie Dundee, a beautiful, exciting city located on the north bank of the River Tay. A place GQ magazine calls “Britain’s coolest little city;” and in a setting so beautiful it will take your breath away. We have hills, sea and a beach on our doorstep. Recently awarded UNESCO City of Design status – the first UK city to be recognised this way – due to innovations in biomedical research, computer games, comics, and triumphs of yesteryear, like marmalade, Dundee has reinvented itself as a hub for art and design, computer game development and biosciences. The city has a lower cost of living than many other parts of Scotland, and has again been named the most cost-effective place in Scotland to study according to a 2016 survey conducted by NatWest. On top of all this, it is regularly reported as the sunniest city in Scotland, which is never a bad thing! We’re convinced you will find Dundee as wonderful a place as we do, and your years here will be full of amazing experiences that will live long in the memory.

06

The V&A Museum of Design, due to open in 2018, is the first ever UK design museum to be built outside London.

A thriving art community and new restaurants popping up all over the place make Dundee a city that’s constantly surprising people – even the locals. abertay.ac.uk

ABOUT SCOTLAND The history and beauty of Scotland is the reason millions of people visit the country every year. Living in Dundee, one of four major cities in Scotland, puts you in the perfect location to enjoy everything this great nation has to offer. Spectacular scenery, the great outdoors, all the culture you could possibly need and fabulous food are all on your doorstep. You’re only an hour from Edinburgh – home of the world’s biggest arts festival - to the south, Aberdeen to the north, and Glasgow is just over an hour away to the southwest. Each has its own identity, arts and culture, history and shopping. All are well worth a visit. The historic golf town of St Andrews is just 25 minutes away. In fact, you’re close to some of the best golf courses in Scotland, whatever direction you travel. You’re also a short journey from Perth – gateway to the world famous Highlands. Stunning landscapes will take your breath away – the ideal setting for those who enjoy the great outdoors. Indeed, much of Scotland is unspoilt countryside, so finding a quiet, tranquil spot to spend the day isn’t difficult. Scotland is a small country, but is full to the brim of things to see and do. “The Abertay campus is small and easy to navigate. I love the fact it is bang in the middle of the city. But it isn’t just the location – the community spirit among students and staff is great, and that’s something I noticed from week one.” Peter Romaniuk, year 3, BSc (Hons) Ethical Hacking

UNIVERSITY LIFE CAMPUS The perfect location

Our small, welcoming campus is situated right in the heart of the city, so you don’t have to compromise on location. You are on the doorstep of everything Dundee has to offer. Just about everything you need to get through the day can be found on campus, but the handy option of a two-minute walk to the city centre is available if you want to mix things up a bit.

The Abertay family

You will meet students from over 60 different countries, allowing you to learn about much more than your chosen area of study. Our staff and students regularly talk of the tight-knit, family feel at Abertay, and we’re sure it won’t take long for you to discover that for yourself.

Old meets new

Our campus is a mix of the traditional and the contemporary. The Old College building still has a navigation station on the roof, dating back to the turn of the 20th Century, when students were taught how to navigate using the sun, stars and the technology of the time. Workplace simulation is still at the heart of how we teach today, and you will be surrounded by the latest state-of-the-art facilities, no matter your specialism.

ACCOMMODATION For many of you, coming to university is the first time living away from home. Having your own space can be a great experience, and living in university accommodation gives you the comfort of knowing you are in a safe, well maintained environment. You are also in the perfect place to make friends for life and have great fun. We have approximately 650 bed spaces across three locations, all of which are a short walk from campus and the city centre. There is a range of room types - including bedsits, single rooms, shared rooms and multi-occupancy flats - so you can be confident you’ll find something which suits your needs. They are great value, with utility bills, internet access and contents insurance all included in the price. Head to our website for up-to-date rent prices. Our accommodation is self-catered and provides a mix of en-suite and shared bathroom facilities with each of our residences having on-site launderette facilities. Wherever you stay, we have campus staff available 24 hours a day, and a team of cleaners ensure the shared spaces and bathrooms en-suite or otherwise - are cleaned regularly. Make sure you have a look at the information for each residence, which will help you decide where you would like to stay. 12

Lyon Street

Our Lyon Street residences have approximately 125 bedrooms, divided into one, two, or three bed flats. Spread across two buildings, these former private flats have been converted by Abertay - retaining the feel of a private rental but with the perks of university accommodation. Light, airy bedrooms have been made up as singles, twins or doubles, and all contain storage and study areas, with each flat having shared kitchen and shower room facilities. Lyon Street is the furthest residence from campus, but is still only ten minutes’ walk away and benefits from free, on-street public parking. Residents at Lyon Street have exclusive access to a large area of green space located behind one of the buildings. It is a perfect place to chill out with your flatmates. Lyon Street is quieter than our other residences, mainly due to flat sizes. However, those living there find a great community spirit, and there is always something going on.

Meadowside

Parker House

Purpose built for student accommodation, Meadowside has 69 bedrooms divided into six or nine-bedroom flats. Every bedroom is en-suite (with shower), and every flat has a large kitchen/living area.

The modern, purpose built building offers en-suite facilities (with shower) in every bedroom and is a fiveminute walk from campus.

Meadowside is the closest residence we have to campus. It is literally at the end of the road and is no more than two minutes away from class. It is also right in the centre of the city, meaning you’d be struggling to find a better location to base yourself.

Meadowside also has a ‘barrier free’ flat, specifically designed for students with specific physical needs. A secure bike shed is available for anyone keen on the two-wheeled method of transport.

Although Parker House is owned and managed by a private company, the University has a nomination agreement where a number of rooms are held specifically for Abertay students with the remaining rooms made available to students of all local universities and colleges.

More information can be found at www.prodigy-living.co.uk/cities/dundee/parker-house.

Away from university accommodation, Dundee has no shortage of private flats and houses available for rent all over the city. Rental prices suit any budget, so whether you want a nice wee one-bedroom flat, or a house to fit you and your friends, there will be something to fit the bill. www.dundeecity.gov.uk/housing/landlordregistration scotland.shelter.org.uk/get_advice/advice_for_young_people/students

Abertay Students Association (Abertay SA) is run by students, for students. One of our main jobs is to represent your views during your time at university. We do this through elected representatives, setting policy through our student rep council and encouraging students to find their voice. Student class reps are elected by you; all students are eligible to run in the class rep elections so if you think you can help improve the student experience by standing up for your class, we’d love you to get involved. Your journey through university will be challenging, and on occasion, you may need that little bit of extra support. The Students’ Association is here to make sure you get the help you need – both personal and academic.

WELFARE Free impartial advice. Support with housing issues. Campaigns to promote wellbeing.

Along with this, we at Abertay SA facilitate over 30 student run societies. Societies come in all shapes and sizes and cover a large range of subjects, from games development to knitting. If there isn’t a society for you, why not create one? We look forward to working hard representing, supporting and empowering you during your time at Abertay. We also hope you will get involved in helping us be as effective as we can be!

The striking building houses a host of great spaces, allowing you to spend your time between lectures however you choose.

TV’s play music channels, but there is a quiet space if you are looking for somewhere comfortable to study.

Common Room Our basement bar offers an alternative venue for those looking for some serious down time. With ten free access PCs, a plethora of games consoles, and a projector screen for communal gaming and film screenings, the Common Room is a flexible space with a unique vibe. Hannah Maclure Centre The top floor of the Student Centre houses a bespoke creative space, bringing together staff, students, the local community and creatives from across the globe, to deliver and participate in exhibitions and cultural events. The public programme is free and open to all, offering a wide range of cultural experiences, from art exhibitions and workshops, to screenings and performances. Digital Culture – enriched by Abertay’s world-leading success in computer games, digital media and computer arts – is often explored through the events here, with the ambition of inspiring new ideas in the field and encouraging creativity and collaboration. There is also a cinema/performance space which can be used by the University community as well as external clients, to screen films, hold symposiums and meetings, or host performances.

SPORT At Abertay, sport and physical activity is as much a part of university life as going to lectures and tutorials. We have a wide range of clubs to join – from traditional team sports like rugby, football and netball, to more niche activities, like triathlon and archery. The vast majority of Abertay sports clubs compete in the British University and College Sport (BUCS) leagues, where we have achieved a great deal of success in recent years. We also get involved in a lot of local and regional events, organised by Scottish Student Sport (SSS), providing all club members plenty of opportunity to participate. The 2015/16 season was our most successful to date, with four BUCS titles, three SSS titles and a number of local league success stories. We also offer a wide range of non-competitive and recreational sport for those looking to enjoy the social side of club life. Our Elite Athlete Programme is dedicated to helping national standard athletes combine their studies with sporting commitments. We have supported athletes competing at the Commonwealth Games and European Championships, in addition to helping many achieve national recognition in their sport. Have a look at our website for up-to-date information on sport at Abertay. abertay.ac.uk

“Practical work is a great way of perfecting what you are taught in lectures, and you get to do a lot of it. Speaking to my friends at Abertay, it’s clear that this is the case whatever you’re studying.” Dimitar Danailov, year 4, BA (Hons) Game Design and Production

STUDYING HERE TEACHING AND LEARNING During your time at Abertay, you will pick up knowledge and skills using a variety of methods. Alongside the more traditional approaches to teaching and learning, we place a strong emphasis on workplace simulation in the form of placements and real-world projects. The University has a clear teaching and learning strategy, and more details of how you are taught can be found in the description of each course programme.

Lectures

Lectures are designed to give you the framework of a specific subject. Normally lasting one hour, they are delivered by subject specialists. You will be encouraged to note the main points, and handouts, summarising the important points and providing further details of complicated subject matter, are often distributed.

Tutorials and Seminars

Typically, these involve smaller groups of students and staff, and provide an important opportunity for you to take part in active discussion on relevant topics, to build on what you picked up in lectures, seek points of clarity and gain a deeper understanding. Tutorials and seminars also play an important role in developing your communication and teamwork skills. You will, on occasion, be asked to complete recommended reading to ensure you are sufficiently prepared for participation in discussions.

Laboratory work

This is an essential part of many courses at Abertay, particularly in the fields of science and computing. It provides you with an opportunity to apply your knowledge and develop practical skills. Lab work normally involves carrying out supervised experiments and getting to grips with the most up-to-date equipment in your chosen field of study. Both individual and group work is commonplace in lab sessions.

Work-related learning

A distinguishing feature of an Abertay education experience is that all our programmes feature work-

related learning at appropriate stages of study in order to really help you hit the ground running after graduation. This field work can take the form of visits to established companies in your chosen area of study, exchange trips to universities all over the world, work placements and study trips. Much of this is built into the course syllabus, but you can also get involved in a whole range of extra-curricular opportunities to broaden your experience and boost your CV, such as through student societies.

Technology enhanced learning

Most courses at Abertay use web-based learning resources and online interaction to supplement traditional forms of course delivery. It makes teaching and learning more flexible and allows you to choose the pace and time in which you learn.

Private study

As a university student, you will find that private study is necessary to supplement the knowledge you pick up in lectures and tutorials. Teaching staff will provide reading lists, and it will be up to you to make sure you regularly keep up to speed with the subjects being taught.

Higher Education Achievement Report (HEAR)

When you graduate from Abertay, you will be issued with an electronic HEAR, which will be a comprehensive record of not only your academic grades, but also a range of your wider achievements, including academic prizes, sports awards and extra-curricular work. Your HEAR will support applications for employment and further study. For more information on HEAR, visit abertay.ac.uk/student-life/ studentrecords/higher-education-achievement-report

ACCELERATED DEGREES If the idea of graduating faster appeals, then you’ll be interested in our accelerated degrees. They are available at Abertay for selected courses. They are devised to give you the opportunity to get out into the world of work as soon as possible. There are a number of reasons an accelerated degree could suit you:

• You can enter the graduate job market 11 months before those starting a traditional degree at the same time as you.

• You will save on tuition fees, living costs, rent and other expenses.

• It is a great way of showing employers your dedication, focus and drive.

During the first two years of an accelerated degree, you will be working alongside students in the traditional format. The differences begin at the end of year 2, where you will study for an additional 15-week semester starting in May, resulting in a shorter summer break. The content for both the accelerated and traditional courses is exactly the same. You will study the same subjects and receive the same quality of education. The only difference being that you will do a third semester. The nice thing is, you don’t have to make up your mind at the outset to go the traditional or accelerated route, you can decide in year 2.

COMING FROM COLLEGE

GOING THROUGH CLEARING

“I studied Business at Dundee & Angus College for two years before joining Abertay in the third year. I feared that we would not get guidance at all from the university, but the lecturers and staff were really supportive and they make plenty of time for their students. I was also very worried about exams because I didn’t have to sit any for my HND. However, the fear brought great results because I did well in my exams and received a distinction for my BA. I was offered a job a month before I graduated.”

“Applying through clearing is really easy – I would definitely recommend it to people.”

Hannah Reyes, Abertay Dundee Business School 2015 graduate

Lucy Upton, Abertay Law 2016 graduate

JOINING AS A MATURE STUDENT “I took the plunge to go to university as a mature student. I already ran my own successful personal training business but wanted to help more people become more active and felt that university was the way to do this. As well as my own perseverance, however, it was undoubtedly the understanding, commitment and patience of the lecturers on my course that led to me being successful and gaining my degree.” Louise Johnstone, Abertay Physical Activity and Health 2015 graduate

APPLICATION FAQs DOES MY PERSONAL STATEMENT MATTER? Yes. Abertay takes several factors into account when making an offer, including your personal statement and references. It’s not just about getting the minimum entrance grades. We’re looking for your motivation and commitment to the course. Actual offers made may be based on higher or lower grades than stated.

WHAT ABOUT THE CURRICULUM FOR EXCELLENCE?

WHAT IS THE UCAS TARIFF? The UCAS tariff is a system that measures qualifications using a points based system. Abertay does not normally express offers to applicants with UCAS tariff points. Our offers are based on achieving certain grades and subjects depending on the qualifications you are taking.

CAN I BE CONSIDERED FOR ADVANCED ENTRY?

The University welcomes students from Scotland who have followed Curriculum for Excellence and taken the new SQA qualifications.

Suitably qualified applicants can apply to be considered for direct entry to the later years of an Abertay undergraduate degree programme. If you have Advanced Highers, good A Levels or a relevant Higher National Certificate (HNC), then ask to be considered for direct entry to year 2, allowing you to complete your Honours degree in three years.

DO YOU CONSIDER SQA SCOTTISH BACCALAUREATES FOR ENTRY?

WHAT IF I’M COMING FROM COLLEGE?

We welcome applicants with the new SQA Scottish Baccalaureates. Although they are not generally listed as a separate entry qualification due to space limitations in this prospectus, entry to year 2 of a relevant degree programme may be possible, but will be dependent upon the subjects you’ve taken and grades achieved.

In most cases, a relevant Higher National Certificate (HNC) will enable you to start at year 2 of an Abertay degree programme. Alternatively, a relevant Higher National Diploma (HND) will usually enable you to start at year 3 of a degree programme.

WHAT IF I’M COMING FROM CARE?

WHAT IF I’M NOT SURE UNIVERSITY IS FOR ME?

Abertay can support you if you’re moving from local authority care to higher education. We guarantee places on our Summer School Preparation Course for all care leavers. We can liaise with social work departments to help you secure financial support while you study and we offer year-round places in university accommodation.

Maybe you’re the first person in your family to consider university or are worried that your family wouldn’t be able to afford for you to go. Maybe you don’t know anyone at university and none of your friends are interested in going. Don’t let that stop you from applying. If you have the talent and motivation for university we want to hear from you, no matter what your background or circumstances. At Abertay we believe it’s what’s in your head that’s important not where you come from. We have a range of support services to help you. TUITION FEES Scottish students

If you are a Scottish undergraduate student, your tuition fees will normally be paid for you by the Scottish Government through the Student Awards Agency for Scotland (SAAS). You must apply to it each year to ensure your fees are paid. For eligibility details, visit saas.gov.uk

EU students

The Scottish Government confirmed in October 2016 that EU students commencing their studies in Scotland in 2017 will have their tuition fees paid by the Scottish Government through the Student Awards Agency for Scotland (SAAS) and will be entitled to complete their studies post-Brexit without a change in fees status. At the time of publication, the Scottish Government has not confirmed arrangements for EU students commencing their studies in Scotland in 2018. Rest assured that as soon as we have the information, we will make it available on our website. English, Northern Irish and Welsh students The annual tuition fee for Abertay University undergraduate students from England, Wales and Northern Ireland is £8,000 for the 2017/2018 academic year. However, you do not have to pay upfront. You can apply for a Tuition Fee Loan from the Government and the cost of your tuition fees will be paid directly to the university. For the most up-to-date fee information, please visit our website. International students Tuition fees vary depending on the course you choose. For the most up-to-date fee information for international students, please visit our website.

Part-time students

Students studying on a part-time basis are liable to pay tuition fees for their course. A part-time fee grant is available to eligible students studying on a part-time basis. Application forms are available at saas.gov.uk from June.

LOANS AND BURSARIES Scottish students

Students from Scotland can apply to the Student Awards Agency for Scotland (SAAS) for a student loan, plus any available supplementary grants, to cover living costs.

EU students

If you have lived in the UK or have immediate family living or working in the UK, you should contact our Advisory Service to discuss your case as you may be eligible to obtain additional support.

English, Northern Irish and Welsh students

A range of support for living costs is available depending on your circumstances, including a maintenance loan for living costs like rent (full-time students only), a maintenance grant (students from Wales and Northern Ireland only) and extra financial help if you have a disability, a partner on a low income or dependent children. Abertay University also offers bursaries to support students from England, Wales and Northern Ireland where household income (assessed by the Student Loans Company) is less than £34,000 per annum.

Students studying nursing degrees

Funding arrangements for nursing students are different to other courses. Scottish students undertaking a degree in Mental Health Nursing at Abertay must apply to the Student Awards Agency for Scotland for the Nursing and Midwifery Students’ Bursary Scheme (NMSB). Students from the rest of the UK must apply to the student finance organisation relevant to where you live (England, Northern Ireland, Wales) for a tuition fee loan and a living cost loan.

International students

International students are not eligible to apply for UKbased student support. However, there are a range of scholarships and bursaries available and details can be found on the Abertay website.

SCHOLARSHIPS The Thorntons Law Scholarship is a one-year scholarship (£1,250) offered to a 3rd or 4th year student studying Abertay’s Bachelor of Laws (Hons) full time. The scholarship is intended to support a student who comes from a low-income background, has overcome financial difficulty to attend university or is a carer for a family member. The H & A Scott Scholarship is a one-year scholarship (£1,275) offered to a 3rd year student studying either Abertay’s Marketing and Business programme or Business Management programme who is taking part in the work placement module. Professor Derek Reid established the Robert Reid Bursary in memory of his late father. The Fund helps local students who have overcome significant challenges to attend university. The bursaries are up to £500 and it is at the panel’s discretion to make an award or a number of awards in any academic year. This bursary is open to students studying any Abertay programme. However, you must be a Scottish resident.

Visit the Abertay website for the most up-to-date information on loans, scholarships and bursaries.

Students from England, Wales and Northern Ireland can apply for a tuition fee loan via Student Finance Online Services. This fee loan is not means tested. You should seek advice from the relevant student finance organisation depending on where you live.

VISIT US If you live around here or are fairly local, you might already have an idea of what we’re about and might even think there’s no need to visit. But there’s nothing like face to face. Every university will show you where you’ll study, stay and play, but you need to hear that little voice in your head telling you this is the place for you. So come along and see if you can picture yourself here.

OPEN DAYS

APPLICANT DAYS

Open Days take place before you’ve made your choice of degree to study or which university to attend. They help you narrow down your choice of both.

Applicant Days are by invitation only. If you’ve applied to us and received an offer, we’ll invite you to attend one. They’ll take place in March and April 2018. You’ll automatically receive an invitation after you apply.

Dates are: • Saturday, 21 October 2017 • Wednesday, 8 November 2017

It’s your chance to experience your chosen subject area in greater depth, meet more of the academics who teach it and chat to current students. There may be lectures, seminars and tours of your department and you can check out all the facilities in more detail.

There’ll be presentations, demonstrations and tours. • Come alone, with your folks, with friends. • Talk to students, tutors and staff. • Take a good look around our lecture theatres, library and facilities.

• Get the insider information on student life.

DO YOU NEED TO ATTEND AN OPEN DAY AND APPLICANT DAY?

CAN’T MAKE IT TO AN OPEN DAY OR APPLICANT DAY?

We’d say yes, as it’s such an important decision. But you might feel you found out pretty much everything you wanted to know at the Open Day so don’t really feel the need to attend the Applicant Day too.

We get that it’s not always possible, so we have other ways to visit us or meet our staff.

As a general rule of thumb, Open Days are especially useful for getting the feel of a place and deciding if it’s right for you. Also on helping you narrow down your choice of courses within a particular subject. An Applicant Day is your chance to take it to the next level and grill tutors and current students on your chosen degree.

UCAS HE fairs – we attend many of them

between March and October, so come along and meet us.

Individual and group visits – if you’re

completely unable to attend an Open or Applicant Day, we can arrange a campus tour for you and a chat with the tutor of your chosen course by appointment.

Make a virtual visit – find out what life at

Abertay is like. See our videos on youtube.com/ Abertay TV. You can also search Google Maps.

International visitors – contact our Recruitment and International team to arrange individual or small group visits to campus. Contact details are

The conference involves talks and discussions between industry leaders, academics and Abertay students, with support and sponsorship from major security companies including Tenable, NCC Group, Portcullis, BT, Context IS and Pentest Limited. It’s a great opportunity for you to build your industry contacts while studying at Abertay.

What you study Learn the background technical aspects of computing to understand how systems function. Security modules in the programme use a case-study approach that allows you to gain experience in investigating, analysing, testing, hacking and ultimately protecting real-life systems. You will study the latest security flaws and how to counteract them. In addition, you will gain the knowledge and technical skills to undertake security audit testing on computer networks and systems. Professional Accreditation 57
