hen fashion designer Adama Paris started the Black Fashion Week in 2010, the intent was much to do with her frustration of rarely finding few black models in fashion world and even cornered on some occasions. The motive behind the fashion week, she was quoted by CNN, was to promote talented black designers and models, who were otherwise ignored by the industry. The sad tale of racism in the fashion industry has been well-known. So much so that the first black cover model of Vogue (Beverly Johnson) experienced racism attack back in 1970’s! Unfortunately the issues that plagued the beauties then, have remained quiet the same over years. Top models like Jourdan Dunn and Chanel Iman have all narrated the sad tale of racism in the fashion market. This edition of The Lifestyle Journalist celebrates the ‘dusky and lovely’ beauties in the fashion world-men and women who turn heads. Budding actors, the existing models and much more. One can go on admiring models like Tyson Beckford, who has endorsed brands like Gucci, Tommy Hilfiger and Calvin Klein and even figured in Britney Spears’s ‘Toxic’. His Jamaican, Panamanian, Chinese and African roots have much to do with his stunning looks. Closer home, the Indian Film Industry too has been ruled by fair skinned beauties. Punjabi film industry is no exception. There is, however, a class of models and refined beauties who are thriving and kicking! A tribute and salutation to all such beauties, in the fashion and film world worldwide… Enjoy Reading! Dr. Neha Miglani | Chief Consulting Editor

Edition! Eve- the first ever Dusky and Lovely mother! I am thrilled to read the first edition of the magazine. The wedding costume insight looks fabulous to bank on. -Nicole Watson, International ActorProducer-Model (Former model for FORD)

Fossil records as well as DNA analysis give scientific evidence to support the fact that the first woman to give birth was a black African woman. It is from her that all humans have come. Mitochondrial DNA analysis has traced all human beings back to one Black woman who is estimated to have lived between 99,000 and 200,000 years ago, most likely in East Africa.

Perks of having melanin-rich Dark skin u In the light-skinned people, the body’s melanocytes respond to sun exposure by producing more melanin, which creates the effect known as tanning. However, there is a limit to the degree of protection that melanin can provide. On the contrary, it is significantly higher in people with naturally darker skin equipping them against several kind of skin disease.

Heartiest congratulations on the frst edition of ur fashion magazine!! Set new standards for us to follow!! -Divya Dutta, Actor

The first edition of the lifestyle journalist looks promising and a fulfilling treat for readers. -Sangram Singh, Wrestler (Big Boss fame)

u Dermatologist Susan C. Taylor, author of “Brown Skin,” points out that Blacks and other people of color generally look younger than their lighter-skinned peers because of the higher levels of melanin in their skin. u The dark pigmentation protects from DNA damage and absorbs the right amounts of UV radiation needed by the body, as well as protects against folate depletion thereby aiding in human reproduction as well. Almost any Black woman who has wandered into a drug store has faced the same dilemma: Which shade of the foundation fits my complexion? Which product will suit my manes? However, cosmetic beauty companies are taking notice and starting to implement changes to make women of colour want to be thought of as a collective part of the beauty industry instead of just an extension of it, looking for the same thing every woman’s looking for when she walks down that beauty aisle.

Style

Strip The Trend Style You Boot yourself up for a ride amidst your doubts to bring out that killer style instinct because this summer’s trend is ‘no trend at all’. Yes, you read that right. Deeksha Rakesh attempts to instill some confidence in you to create your own STYLE and writes on the “No trend” campaign by several fashion bloggers... Let your mind run naked (not literally!) to make the best of cloth, products or anything else you got. 10 | TheLifestyleJournalist | www.thelifestylejournalist.com | September 2016

‘N

o trend’ campaign may not be declared officially but is quite visible from the ways our divas are dressing up. So if you like those hot denim pants, well go for it but if you still got a soft spot for a cute red skater dress, who is stopping you? It is time to be boundless. This year, fashion bloggers show no set pattern, of a certain style, in limelight or any kind of intersection with retrospection. To plus it all, there are all kinds of stuff out to wear. You can follow one fashion blogger and take it as a trend but then another shows up with equally stunning sense of fashion and you are all there looking like a hot mess with a seizure- stumbling, trying to find which way to go. I am pretty (no I am not pretty) sure that is one thing you never want. Well, extrapolating from all this, I think there is more to fashion

situation a little chaotic. Well, that’s when we hark back to our so talented fashion bloggers. They might not totally guide our selection of clothes but they sure do inspire us to try out different styles and combinations, plus keep us in touch with what all is available in the market. So below are some styling tips which I gathered from the blogs as well as vlogs‘You show me the moon with your bejeweled hands. I do not know where to look….your hand, or the moon’ One of the main things I have observed from all the latest blogs and few previous one is that, there should be a target in mind while one is getting ready. Target is not the audience, it is actually a component of your look that is highlighted while still combined with other components. So this target should be the center of the whole procedure from selection of components to actually putting them together. For example- Santoshi Shetty in her fashion

Keep your head high, heels firm and trust me, no one can bring you down. Just believe in yourself, love yourself and you are already a Diva! than just being blind followers. Fashion is you. Wait, what? No, I am me and that is the whole point. You are you and that is what people want to see, that is what you want staring back at you from mirror, not a fake copy of your favorite actor or blogger. Do not get me wrong, each and every person is beautiful and talented in their own way. We are unique beings and that’s what we need to embrace. It might take you an hour or more to just get a slight reflection of Deepika Padukone (I love her sense of styling, it is just so amazing!) but it takes more courage to dress like you want to. Do you understand readers, it is all a play of confidence and some smart mixing. We are letting our imagination run wild but would not that make the whole

blog ‘thestyledge’ actually highlighted it as a tip while going for a daring look (bold lip makeup with two different colours)- “Always remember to keep your eye makeup minimal whenever you are opting for a bold lip colour so that it doesn’t take the attention away from your lips keeping your lips in focus.” So here the center plays role of attention grabber while other components complement its wholesome beauty. ‘Make up will do the trick’ True. Make up does help you cope up with all those end-moment-acnes and ‘difficult to do away with’ skin pigmentation but let’s be real here, it is not humanly possible to put a puff of compact or simply conceal it all the time. Moreover it is more important how you

feel about your skin instead of how it looks. It may seem all flawless but deep down, you know what the real deal is. Even the fashion bloggers go through this ‘so relatable’ tug of war between make up and skin. For now, they do prefer their health over such beauty productsNo wonder you can easily spot blogs enlisting different products which are organic and skin friendly. Every blogger seems to have unanimously concluded health over looks. So dear reader’s, do not push yourself too hard, please take care of your health! It may seem like a personality attribute but in reality, it is the most essential component of any look and the only difference between ‘good’ and ‘amazing’- it is your confidence. Many of us are misled to believe that wearing all the bests we got inevitably gives the best impression. I am sorry to bring it down to you, it is not the case. Before I look at that perfectly fitting denim you got there, I will actually look how you carry it. This component has an overwhelming impression on others and needs no backing or evidence at this point. Just believe in yourself, love yourself and you got this! There is an inexhaustible list of tips which can never be listed down in this article (I am not God and I have a word limit, deal with it!) but I can surely cram up few more tips. The bloggers plus vloggers I used as examples in this article are in reality very different in their personality types and style preferences. While one likes Bohemian Fashion (Kritika Khurana), other likes casual and denims (Santoshi Shetty) and yet other loves cute dresses and going all pink (Akriti Rana), still they never let their preferences compromise with their curiosity and love for trying different combinations and styles. That is another attribute that I totally love about them. They showcase their mood and personality in such a talented way that for any person, they are an inspiration. And do not worry, all these fashion bloggers are no different than you in their potentiality. Every one of you has that instinct and potential to let your body speak for yourself (no matter what body shape you are, your flaws make you flawless and real). So let your thoughts run wild and your fashion, represent your limitless-ness!

T

he key to have a healthy skin, gorgeous body and fashionable mind all your life is a fit body and mind inside out. As a result of this fast moving life, we end up devoting less than minimum amount of time with and for ourselves. Women as old as 50 years of age look stunning because of regular activity, while the youth is busy slouching on sofas losing their body and beauty away. Many of us do not even have time or equipment to workout. However in midst of your busy schedule, here are a few fitness exercises you can practice to keep your body fit and in shape.

Virtual running Running is the best way to keep your body healthy. Even if you do not have a trend mill, you can run standing at the same place. However, you can also opt to go for a quick run outside which is more advantageous.

Obesity four point recipe for success

“I consider obesity to be complex behavioral problem emanating from lack of physical activities, unhealthy food and abnormal response to stress” suggests Dr. Neeru Bali while advising obese people to follow just four strategies to lose weight and embrace a healthy lifestyle.

W

eight gain and obesity are not only the aesthetic issues but have enormous medical ramifications. Once a person gets into the vicious circle of weight gain, it tends to get out of hand rather quickly and very soon the person is engulfed by number of medical ailments ranging from high blood pressure, diabetes to esophageal reflux to obstructive sleep apnea. All of us must make all efforts to maintain a healthy weight at all times.

There is a four stage strategy, focusing on behavioral rules while dealing with physical activities and diet, which can help everyone in maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

1. Keep a food journal handy

This is a simple strategy and just note down everything that you eat and drink throughout the day. Scientific studies indicate that writing down makes you more conscious every time you put something in your mouth. With Apps like ‘LoseIt’ and ‘MyFitnessPal’,it is easier

20 | TheLifestyleJournalist | www.thelifestylejournalist.com | September 2016

than ever to keep track of meals, snacks and beverages. For the less tech savvy lot, a simple notebook should do. l Record everything you drink and eat including water. l Note what you are doing while you are eating like driving, watching TV, reading etc. l Describe how you ate while you were– angry, sad, happy, nervous, starving, bored and so on. Keeping a diary also helps you to identify food allergy if any. Diary would help you to plan food intake better as cutting calories each day helps in losing weight. Look at the pattern of your eating. Identify foods which leave you hungry or craving for sweets and also the ones which were more filling or satisfying. Count how many snacks you had daily in addition to your meals . These snacks normally are left out of our calorie calculations. Maintaining a food journal helps in tracking them all from a scoop of ice cream, a slice of cake,a handful of almonds to an apple.

2. Put a scale in your bathroom

Regular weighing is one of the best weapons against the battle of bulge. According to a study published last year, researchers reported that people who weighed themselves daily lost about three times as much weight than those who did not.

3. Nothing like eating at home

Studies have shown repeatedly that people who eat at fast food joints or restaurants consume an extra two to three hundred calories per day on an average compared to those eating at home. These additional calories add up to almost ten per cent of their daily intake. Eating out results in more consumption of sugars, fats and salts. So, don the chef cap, try out new recipes and prefer eating at home.

4. Know your portions

There is strong evidence to suggest that over the last twenty years, portion sizes have got bigger not only at fast food chains and restaurants but also at home.A study found that Burgers have increased by 23 per cent and Soft drinks by 52 per cent. It is hardly a coincidence that with the increasedportions, the waistlines have added up few digits as well. One way to fight back large portions is to avoid trying to finish the entire serving at restaurants. One can easily ask the left-over component to be packed to carry it home. One can also reduce intake by demanding smaller plates and bowls both at home and while eating out. These are few small tips, which if paid attention to, can play a vital role in slashing down those extra bulges and keep us fit and healthy without any real deal of hardships.

Sleep Well “You are not healthy, unless your sleep is healthy.” –Dr. William Dement

Sleeping naked can cool down the body, enhance blood flow and boost immune system, writes Samreen Kaur

T

o unwind a packed and hectic schedule, it is imperative for body to regenerate the cells and release the stress built inside body due to various reasons. All of this can be attained through a comfortable and calm sleep! It is baffling to think that inspite of trying to achieve perfection in every sphere of life, we fail to optimize the most basic function of our daily life- SLEEP!

It is essential to know how to achieve maximum benefits from your sleep. The purpose of sleep, at least biologically, is to rejuvenate your tired body. Here are few ways in which you can optimize your body functioning during sleep. • Develop a pre-sleep routine. For instance, you can hear soft music or read a book before going to bed. Such activities will relax your mind psychologically which will automatically enhance the quality of your sleep. • Do not take heavy dinner and avoid caffeine/alcohol/nicotine four hours before sleep as they might lead to increase in number of awakening during the night. • Try to develop a consistent sleep schedule of sleeping early and waking up early to avoid the sleep hangover. • Shed some clothing and get healthier! Few of us might know that sleeping naked is very advantageous and can benefit us in many ways by cooling down the body, enhancing the regulation of blood flow, activating body fat and oxytocin, a growth hormone that boosts the immune system and reduces anxiety. • There is a common belief that we should not sleep with our feet pointing towards South. This has to do with the magnetic field of the earth. If we sleep in that direction, it may have an adverse effect on our body. • Regular meditation and breathing techniques also improve the quality of your sleep. All of these great benefits are a step away from us at no real cost. Since we spend around onethird of our entire lives asleep, it is necessary to optimize its function which in turn can make our daily schedule more productive, balanced and full of energy. So get ready for a sound sleep!

Architecture

Poignant reflections in realm of

Architecture

with Sangeet Sharma

Sangeet Sharma’s architectural work is widely recognized and covers extensive ground countering the ego driven monstrosities that litter the physical and cultural landscape as each of his structures rises above any predictable style inspired by a unique contextual awareness. A renowned name in the fraternity, he is recipient of nine awards in architecture including one on authorship of five books in the realm. He has been published in national and international journals for some of his renowned projects. In a tête-à-tête with Urvi Sharma, he reflects upon his style, multi-faceted demands of the clients, his contemporaries, effect of commercialization in the modern era and socially sustainable architecture. 66 | TheLifestyleJournalist | www.thelifestylejournalist.com | September 2016

Had architecture always been you passion? ALWAYS! I belong to the family of architects. It is there in my genes. My father, S.D. Sharma is a veteran in this field and a leading name in the fraternity. He worked with Le Corbusier in making of Chandigarh. So, I grew up looking at him and his enthralling work. It runs in my veins. Is there any change you have witnessed in the world of architecture when you began until today? The world of architecture was always the same. The creative principles remain similar to what were followed even hundred years back! What has changed is the approach towards it. The technology and the economy of the present world, where we are building, have transformed.

architecture around the globe. Besides the images, the content is sometimes very invigorating.

“The synchronic structure of architecture revolves around the tripartite virtues of sensitivity, sensibility and sustainability.”

Which are your most admired works so far? Admiration does not come to architects easily. Building work is a long drawn process and gets noticed slowly. Unlike poetry and music that stirs one’s insides instantly, the art of architecture is slow and its effect is peculated day by day, sometimes taking, let us say hundred years. Is there any starchitect who has inspired you in your journey? Many in fact! My father, Satiago Calatrava, Charles Correa and Tadao Ando to name a few! All of them mean the world to me.

Any special experience you have faced while working to fulfil the multi-faceted demands of the clients in the market? We face them every single day. Clients, today, are aware and travel a lot. They usually dominate one’s designs but we need to transform their mindsets by propagating the best ideas in the realm of design. That way, I think architects can end up being good psychologists and teachers to their clients. One of our clients wanted a gothic building with modern features. I made him understand about the disoriented look and the feel of the design which ultimately convinced him to understand the alienated complexity which engulfed it. Finally when the design was ready, he was happy and content!

Visualizing a project and seeing it become concrete in ground reality can be different sometimes. What is your take upon that? Visualising a project is the architect’s pejorative. It is his training, working and ability to picturize a project but in due course, many factors dilute the thought-processes. Agencies like contractors, consultants, builders and every remotely involved event may influence the conceptual image preconceived in an architect’s mind. Such is the nature of our profession. However, we build upon our vision steadfastly ensuring the minimal damage done to the aesthetic aspect of our design. Do you keep yourself updated with design and architect magazines? Yes, they are the prime providers of latest trends, products, technology being employed in the field of

What are the concerns and challenges today in designing the environmental and socially sustainable architecture? Passive architecture, use of low quality materials, the inferior use of mechanical technology and finally, the minds who think alike! Social sustainability means social acceptability. That which is largely acceptable is truly sustainable. How has commercialization affected the realm of architecture? Today’s world revolves around commercialization. The playing and buying capacity has increased, thereby, demanding a richer product from a tap to build itself. The need of the hour is not to subdue commercialization but to channelize it. Extreme commercialization will lead to doom and demise of good taste and human values. What are your hobbies besides designing? I build! Building transforms me. I write! Writing, in turn, completes me. I am a singer and play guitar as well. However, referring to them as hobbies will be like mocking them as insignificant when the truth is that they have become second nature to me. What will you advice to the young creative people aspiring to become architect? The synchronic structure of architecture revolves around the tripartite virtues of sensitivity, sensibility and sustainability. Do you have certain signature style in creation of the meaningful architecture? How do you wish to be remembered as? Yes, every architect over the years develops his signature style. Style is attributed to the realm where lines begin and end at the point he is confident about. I wish to be remembered as an architect who, like his eminent peers, helped to change the visual, aural and written word and through it, the whole world.
