editor’s letter

T

he death and revival of ‘Phulkari and Bagh’ has been an adventurous edition for all us in the team. Reasons are several. One, because of the genuine and authentic desire of TLJ creative and editorial team to work towards upliftment of Phulkari as an art form. Second, the research process was fulfilling and amazing; finding and meeting individuals occupied in this field was even more phenomenal. For one, the whole exercise made us richer in journalistic experience and gave more perspectives to the real dimension of Indian tradition (Punjabi in particular)! I was particularly touched by the work undertaken by womenfolk in interiors of Punjab to save Phulkari culture from diminishing altogether. Still others, I concur, are doing the preservation act only to gain mileage, while the real artisans suffer the meagre compensations for their brilliant hand work. My understanding of the whole situation says that unless the fashion world in India and overseas explores the riches of Phulkari and Bagh (the handmade real time work and not the modern day machine/computerized designs and duplicates!), the momentum to popularize and save Phulkari will never build in India and the world. The celebration and festivity in Punjab cannot be separated from Phulkari, but to make use, understand and value the real handwork is a different game altogether. Indian fashion designers would certainly not wait for the day when a Ralph Lauren or a Tom Ford decide (randomly!) to begin using and promoting Phulkari! The fashion shoots on Phulkari at rustic locales was a delightful treat for the creative team. The cover shoot escapade with OshinBrar, a budding actor from Punjabi Film Industry, was a real time fashion styling treat for us! Besides, in the inside Phulkari shoots, newer models and fashion stylists got a chance to experience the best of their own selves. Hope you like the edition as a complete package… Salutations to the wonderful work being done by scores of people in the field of Phulkari (which we shall continue to cover in subsequent editions as well)! Nutrition,

Nutrition, No life

Hippocrates announced to the world “Let food be your medicine and medicine be your food” way back in 400 B.C. Today, good nutrition is more important than ever before. Our columnist and noted nutritionist Aditi Mehrotra brings you all that you need to know about the healthy food and nutrition for a healthy lifestyle.

W

e all are at the receiving end of foods that are processed and are loaded with chemicals and additives, far from their natural state. Food selection happen with the selection of one combo meal at the nearest fast food joint. We ignore our unique genetics and experiences we were born with that dictate the healthy food options. While the wrong diet can be deadly, eating right is among the cornerstones of health. From food scavengers to internet food browsers, we have come a long way. Chemicals, additives and preservatives are added to processed foods to prolong their shelf life not yours. “Although evolution is an ongoing process for all living beings, their genome is the result of past habits of the antecedents who came before them,” as observed by Loren Cordain, PhD, a professor and the author of ‘The Paleo Diet’. The arguments are rife with theories and hypothesis supporting facts that our genes simply have not caught up with this dietary divergence, the chief cause contributing to the epidemic levels of chronic disease, such as cardiovascular disease, c a n c e r , diabetes and obesity that we see today. The food supply chain has broadened its horizons altering the nutritional characteristics of the otherwise balanced unprocessed diet. This does not imply that we go back to the

‘Caveman’ Diet but at least try and adhere to the tenets of healthy eating concept such as unpolished grains, fresh fruits and vegetables in their near natural unprocessed state that are in sync with the existing environment. At least 4 of the 10 leading causes of death today are heart diseases, cancer, stroke and diabetes which are directly related to the way we eat and what we eat. We live in a digital age that is constantly being updated with newer versions. We tread through the day with confidence owing to the dependency we have on message alerts beeping incessantly and a zillion electronic notices at every step. With the proliferation of health tracking phone apps, this fast food frequenting community confidently weigh and measure its food intake and also the resultant calorie burn out in a day. Is there ever a pause to speculate looking back on the lives of our ancestors who were hunter-gatherers from the Paleolithic Era that ended around 10,000 years ago with the development of agriculture? Does this eat- on- therun community- tracking its diet on smartphones, ever realize that even though their world may be evolving at a digital speed, their genes are still stuck at the hunter-gatherer dinner table. Or on the flipside, did their ancestors even foresee that food for generations to come will one day be sold frozen, packaged in plastic and metallic foils? Good Nutrition is one of the most cost-effective investment a country can make to advance health and development. Many of the developing countries have made infant and young child nutrition a top priority included in their national policies and programs. There is an urgent need to mobilize resources, increase investments and scale up efforts to improve nutrition. Along with good

nutrition as part of the overall healthy lifestyle- regular exercise, not smoking or drinking alcohol excessively, stress management and limiting exposure to environmental hazards also contribute to healthy statistics of such countries. The key to good nutrition is the perfect ratio of balance, variety and moderation. To stay healthy, body needs the right balance of carbohydrates, fats, and protein- the three main components of nutrition. One also need vitamins, minerals and other substances from different kinds of food, and while some foods are better than others,

The need of the hour is to go ‘preventive’. Little attention to the food can present diseases and severe conditions later on in life. no single food or food group has it all therefore eating a variety of different foods is essential. The need of the hour is to go ‘preventive’. For example, atherosclerosis or the hardening of arteries can begin in early childhood, but the process can be halted or even reversed with a proper diet. Gradual bone thinning that result in osteoporosis may be slowed down if diet is made rich in calcium plus adequate Vitamin D levels are enhanced in the body. One may be genetically predisposed to diabetes, but keeping the weight within a healthy range through diet and exercise the disease may never strike again. Nutrition is Life. Life is celebration. We celebrate the National Nutrition Week this month to celebrate a healthy nourishing life.

PINKT

O

ctober can aptly be referred to as ‘the reverence for life’ month. This month brings in very important calendar markings. ‘The World Vegetarian Day’ on the first initiates the month. ‘The World Vegetarian Day’ encourage families to go meatless and consume a vegetarian diet that will go a long way in protecting them against cardio-vascular disease, diabetes, colon cancers and many more of such life threatening diseases. The perception of the effects of a vegetarian diet on health has gone through a transformation in the last 20 years ranging from doubts regarding its nutritional adequacy to positioning it as the leading nutritionally sound diet. Being vegetarian certainly does not omit the ovolacto food groups nor does it encourage people to convert to Vegans or vegetarians

who do not eat meat, fish, dairy or egg or Fruitarians who further restrict their food intake to just fruits, nuts and seeds. If you’re eating a well-balanced vegetarian diet with plenty of unprocessed whole grains, fruits and vegetables, you are eating one of the healthiest diets on the planet. It is also the ‘World Health Literacy’ month. You will also notice that October goes pink in support of ‘Breast cancer awareness’. October ushers in not only festivities and a fall in temperature, but those 31 days spotlighting breast cancer prevention, education and finding its cure. Countries around the globe celebrate Breast cancer awareness month with walkathons, races, cancer walks and a dozens of charity event schedules. The Empire State Building in United States will aglow in pink to mark this month for cancer awareness. October has aptly been renamed ‘Pinktober’ as countries go pink to spread awareness about this dreaded disease affecting more than 1 million women who are diagnosed worldwide each year. USA and UK have one of the highest incidence rates worldwide. In India, breast cancer is the second most common cancer (after cervical cancer) with an estimated 115,251 new diagnoses each year. In the less developed countries, low survival rates can be attributed mainly to the lack of early detection programs and inadequate diagnosis and treatment facilities. October, the Breast Cancer Awareness Month aims to inform everyone that early detection and diagnosis with timely treatment can ensure complete recovery

BER!

and a long life afterwards. Take charge and implement the real-life strategies to reduce health risks. Prevention is about the choices you make each day. It includes self-care, which is about paying attention to how you feel and about taking prompt action when you sense something wrong. This means being in tune with your body and mind and realizing when something is out of balance and seeking immediate cure. Stay Fit, stay healthy. All efforts must be made to reduce the risk factors for breast cancer. There are no magic foods that will prevent breast cancer but facts and studies support that foods can definitely lower its risk and boost our immune system. Super foods for breast cancer prevention include all cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, cabbage, brussels sprouts, cauliflower that are known to block tumors. Allyl sulfide compounds in garlic and onions, curcumin in turmeric, catechin in green or white tea, lignans in flaxseeds, carotenoids in all orange, yellow and dark green fruits and veggies lower the risk of breast cancer. Walnuts and fish, rich in omega-3 fatty acids reduce inflammations. Apple peels and pomegranates, berries and cherries also help fight cancer. Diet alone will not help unless your BMI is maintained at a steady less than 25 throughout your life. Elevated BMI has been conclusively shown to increase the risk of postmenopausal breast cancer. A healthy diet for both men and women comprising of all foods listed above teamed with a regimented exercise program will reduce the risk of being hit by any cancer.

SO GET IN SYNC WITH PINK! October is a special month! ‘The World Vegetarian Day’ on the first initiates the month. There is a special effort to encourage families to go vegetarian to protect them against cardio-vascular disease, diabetes, colon cancers and many more of such life threatening diseases! Also it is the Breast Cancer Awareness Month and experts vouch for early detection and diagnosis of this form of cancer. 12 | TheLifestyleJournalist | www.thelifestylejournalist.com | October 2016

THE ADAGE OF

HANDLOOMS 16 | TheLifestyleJournalist | www.thelifestylejournalist.com | October 2016

The magic and charm of handlooms date back to Indus Valley civilisation or even back to being mentioned in our Rigveda. Neha Joshi takes a look at how Smriti Irani’s Handloom campaign (of glorifying the forgotten glare of handlooms) is the fight not just for saving, justifying and feeding those forgotten 43 lakh weavers and their families all around India, but also to bring the essence of home and hand–made fabric in fight essentially against the magnifying and preferred power-looms products.

H

ow hard will it be to not resist imitating the delectable and handsome Milind Soman donning handloom? It is difficult not to be affected or atleast try the very same piece to look just like him. Smriti Irani’s #ilovehandloom campaign is just doing the trick of presenting the old wine in the very attractive new bottle. Interesting! Even today go anywhere in India to which-ever state, the handmade piece of cloth is unique of that very state, exposing the richness and distinct culture of the region. Be it the phulkari of Punjab, the colourful tie and dye of Gujrat and Rajasthan, brocades from Benaras, chanderi from Madhya Pradesh, the rich technique of satin weaving of Varanasi, the warmth of light and renowned Pashmina shawls, a silk benarasi saree, all have a story to tell of their rich heritage entailing agreat wealth of never going out-of-fashion. Infact, the handmade fabric has an emotive energy and feels emotionally correct to wear as it emerges out of the sweat and sweet labour of sleepless nights and endless days. The fade and comfort of khadi have always been favoured by our politicians in the past and even today, we see them wearing kurta payjama with a khadi jacket over it. The light and delightful sarees are chosen by the women politicians from time immemorial. Generally, such fabric has been assumed to be the dress code of politicians but the genre of it has diversified in its variegated forms.

Certain film stars have been complete loyalists to the handloom products, be it the sarees or the bags they carry. It is the present generation who needs to embrace the resplendence of the hand-loomed fabric and innovate their wardrobe, taking cue from their style

The sensuousness of hand-woven silk piece on the body and brightness of colours of bandhani, the sparkle of the mirror-work and softness of pashmina is beyond comparison. statement. The ramp and the pieces flown over it decide the market for the young fashion to simulate. Boosting and promotion of the credibility of hand-loomed fabric is being done by joining hands with the leading fashion designers of the country. The traditional arts of weaving and spinning presented in the market with the twist of modern training, skills and perspective can definitely be the

mantra of success for the hand-made products. Ritu Kumar is well known to turn hand weaved fabric, including khadi, into a completely new avatar, all ready to make a fashion statement being both affordable and accessible. Sabyasachi Mukherjee, famous for his bridal sarees and lehngas, require weavings from craftsmen of Benaras in both cotton and khadi to add the authentic flavour to his works. Rohit Bal is a lover of handlooms who does not shy away from indulging in the grandeur of Varanasi looms. Tarun Tahiliani, J.J. Valaya or Abu JaniSandeep Khosla and Nachiket Barve, Rimzim Dadu and Swati Kalsi are among the younger brigade aspiring to create the wave of appreciation, for the labour dipped handlooms. Beyond saving the handloom weavers from the back-lash of the new and equipped power looms, it is to bring back the glory of handlooms weaved by the forgotten weavers to the center-stage. It is to create the wave of freshness and newness with the edge of affability for the new generation. It is to feel the breathable-fabric, by breaking free the bounders of power looms. It is to adorn the sensuousness of silk on the body and brightness of colours of bandhani, the sparkle of the mirror-work and softness of pashmina. The collaborated efforts of administration, groups of celebrities and designers are trying to push up the trade and its products but it is the sense of made-in-country and byhand which will really bring it into the spotlight. To foresee, ache din for the handlooms are just around the corner.

Architecture

RAJ PATEL The Master of his Art

18 | TheLifestyleJournalist | www.thelifestylejournalist.com | October 2016

Having proven his mettle by showing the ubiquitous presence of his talent around the globe, Raj Patel tends to fuse his architectural explorations with immaculate engineering and art to exhibit enthralling brilliance. A pioneer in the realm of architecture, he reflects upon the intersection of commercialism and architecture, challenges faced by architects today, the role of technology in the profession, the debate between a theoretical education versus a hands-on approach and his recent project of KIA headquarters (in Kuwait) as an exemplary work of building dynamic futuristic organization without losing connection to its past.

It is hard to stay true to what you believe in today’s age of instant gratification but patience in the profession of architecture is worth enduring if you want to create something meaningful.

could be set up at a large scale. I worked there for two years and then pursued a Masters of Architecture degree. After graduate school, I went back to Chicago and worked for SOM where I learned that designing buildings throughout the world was definitely possible for me. I was able to mix the ‘spirit of architecture’ that I got from grad. school with the need to produce commercial buildings. It led to my joining KEO in 2001 with an abundance of experience and energy, ready to tackle a new world full of amazing challenges. Recently you are working on KIA Headquarters supposed to be completed by the end of this year, which is one of the most attractive of your works. Would you tell us

How did your adventure in realm of architecture begin? I think I was about 8 years old and growing up in Toronto. My father’s friend was an Architect and he happened to take me to his office on one particular Saturday morning to pick up some work he wanted to bring home. There, I saw models of buildings that they had designed and I was instantly mesmerized. I knew then and there that I wanted to be an architect when I grow up. He gave me drafting paper, pencils, triangles and a T-square and I started drawing a building the very next day. Ever since, there has been no looking back and I have worked my way to come along this road of fulfilling my heart’s dream. You have worked with leading design firms such as Skidmore

Owings & Merrill, Perkins & Will and Charles Correa. You joined KEO International Consultants in 2001. How has all this work experience shaped the architect in you? All the work experience is valuable, but I have been probably more fortunate than many people to have had these particular opportunities at various stages of my development. Working with Charles while I was still getting my Bachelor of Architecture degree gave me a glimpse of an intellectual man whose thoughts and ideas were larger than life. One feels like a little boy in his presence. He gave me a lot of confidence and encouraged me to pursue a Master’s degree. After my undergraduate degree, I worked at Perkins & Will in Chicago and got a taste for what corporate architecture was and how professional design organizations

20 | TheLifestyleJournalist | www.thelifestylejournalist.com | October 2016

Commercialism is a necessary evil and I think one has to learn how to deal with it instead of condoning it.

something about the building? Which are its chief features? KIA is a design competition that we won while dealing with how to create a modern Headquarters building for a dynamic futuristic organization without losing its connection to its past. We searched for timeless architectural themes found in Kuwait’s history and tried to create a vision around them that would forge a design solution for the project. The main themes we found includes the courtyard, the Mashrabiya, and Islamic Geometry. We transformed these into a modern skyscraper with 8 story tall internal courtyards which office spaces wrap around. Islamic Geometry and the Mashrabiya inspired the creation of a three dimensional façade design that evoked a strong pattern while at

the same time minimizing the amount of glass to protect the interior from the heat collected from the sun’s ultra violet rays. KIA Headquarters building is sustainable in its approach. What can HQ building promote from that aspect, according to you? Unfortunately, I think we tend to think of sustainability as energy related, but it also means how to do something peacefully for an extended period of time such as working in the same space day after day. It is proven that working in a healthy workplace environment leads to better performance, lesser rate of illness, and more positivity. We have designed the building using underfloor air distribution which requires less energy

to cool the space with lower air velocity speeds as the air does not have to be forced from the ceiling downward. The recessed windows along the perimeter and the courtyard in the middle of every floor will provide a more ambient lighting level to the office floors reducing glare and allowing employees to be more productive. I think the feeling of working within courtyards will be a wonderful experience for all the employees subconsciously lifting their spirits by rekindling their connection to open spaces, nature, and other people. How important is the place, the context for one of your buildings? Context is very important when designing a building because you want to design something that feels like it belongs to that place and will remain meaningful even in the future. Sometimes, there is not much to be inspired from the context but there are subtle hints all around us that we can tap into, if we are receptive enough. While it is possible to build a glass skyscraper in the middle of the desert, I am not sure of its appropriate context. What are the cornerstones of “architecture for green living”? I think passive design strategies are incredibly important for architects to implement when designing for the built environment. Simplicity, efficiency, and functionality are also vital if the goal is promoting ‘green living’ and it is an architect’s responsibility to achieve this. On the other hand, Architecture for green living has its drawbacks it seems because people don’t always like the aesthetic outcome of employing passive design strategies and so the commitment to stay true to the principles is often abandoned. For example, the demand for glass buildings in extremely hot climates leads to high internal heat gains which must be offset by extra cooling loads. Not everyone; however, is willing to reduce the amount of glass on their building and so there is an impasse. I think our buildings in the future will look different as there is a gaining movement to minimize our use of natural resources and strive for zero energy buildings.

Have you abandoned or gone in hibernation while designing any project of yours? What are the challenges you face in wake of exponentially rising commercialism? Yes, I find that being away from distractions definitely helps one focus on issues to be resolved in a particular project. Working early in the morning and working on the plane are probably the two best ways of concentrating on my work. Architecture is also about thinking and that is often a difficult thing to do in the chaos of the office with phones, emails, meetings, etc. Hibernation is a good thing! Commercialism is a necessary evil and I think one has to learn how to deal with it instead of condoning it. As architects, we cannot forget or deny that our projects carry a financial burden that must eventually be met in order to make the entire endeavor worth the effort. The biggest challenge that I find is that profitability of a project often leads to the use of cheap materials which are going to dilapidate within few years. When this happens, no one remember the constraints on the design and blames the architect for bad selection of materials. The space we live in and perceive is expressed on different levels; how can today’s architecture be used to create new experiences of human cohabitation? Perhaps the most intriguing building type of the past century is the modern skyscraper which allows us to cohabit above one another and experience views from extraordinary heights that were never imaginable in the past. To occupy a space hundreds of meters above the ground and look down upon the surroundings has shattered our being grounded to the earth and question our ultimatelimitations to reach the sky above. Today’s architecture, as can be especially witnessed throughout Asian cities, has shifted from cohabiting along the horizontal plane to the vertical plane. It now seems the most important thing we will need in the future is a good elevator. Ethics and aesthetics now seem to have come together in a sustainable

vision of the dwelling-place. To what extent do you think construction materials can support a complex concept of design? It’s a very good question but I am not sure that we are going in the right direction in this matter. While there are new advancements in technologies that are creating thinner, stronger, and weather resistant façade materials today, our profession is often trapped by people’s romantic notion of the past. When we are forced to create an arch today, it carries absolutely no meaning in terms of the construction methodology that the Romans invented using bricks or the structural ingenuity of transferring upper level loads to the ground while still being able to walk through an opening. In short, it is fake and that is disturbing to me. How can we demand advancements in our mode of transport from horse carriage to Bentleys but halt our advancement in our mode of construction technology? It seems the modern skyscraper is the only building type which requires us to employ materials made from new technology in order to work. You have worked on a lot of places in your career. How have the demands and designing changed in recent years? A lot has changed over the years‘process’ seems to be a word that no one understand or care about these days. Time and technology have overtaken ‘process’ in terms of importance. While I do understand that technological advances and programs

22 | TheLifestyleJournalist | www.thelifestylejournalist.com | October 2016

allow us to generate drawings faster than ever, I do not think abandoning the ‘process’ is a good thing and it is our responsibility as designers to convince clients why it is important. As the saying goes- nine months and one woman can give you a baby, but one month and nine women can’t! It is hard to stay true to what you believe in today’s age of instant gratification but patience in this profession is worth enduring if you want to create something meaningful. Any advice for young architecture aspirants? Welcome to one of the most profound and rewarding professions that plays such an important part of how society experiences the built environment. I have learnt two very important lessons throughout the years- first, if you do not learn how to tear down your design ideas, someone else will! Learn to be critical and question what you are doing again and again as it is the only way to weed out the things that are weak and foster the things that are strong. Second, we design buildings for our clients, not ourselves. I see too many designers that walk away in disgust when a client does not like a design that they have proposed. The trick in this profession is to get a client to believe that the design you are proposing was actually his idea to begin with. If he does, you will get your project approved and most likely built. We must promote good design as architects and designers so I encourage you to find a mentor to help you navigate the stormy seas and stay on the right course. Work hard and you will be rewarded with good work!

Where the architecture of the building dictates the style, the texture and colour of furniture adds aesthetic sense to the whole interiors.

What kind of role does the furniture play at lifting beauty of any place?

It is quite important. Where the architecture of the building dictates the style, the texture and colour of furniture adds aesthetic sense to the whole interiors. What are the sources of inspiration for you when it comes to your designs and work? Though all the heritage and cultures around the world are inspiring, it is the glorious Mughal period which is my personal favourite because of its rich, exquisite and exuberant legacy. What comes first- the materials or the design idea? Sometimes, the design is conceived in the beginning and then the different materials are applied thereafter. On other occasions, the materials (elements) can inspire you to make an art piece. It can work either way. However, we make sure not to compromise with the quality of our work. What are the current trends and projects you are working on? Colonial is a rage in the market right now and has made a successful comeback. However, we are working with all contemporary, colonial, oriental themes. Our main focus is to work according to the tastes and preferences of our clients. lax seeds, also called Linseeds, are small brown or golden colored seeds which are among the favorite nutritional supplementsand one of the most cultivated and revered super food across the world. Evidence for their consumption goes back to pre

historical times. Flax seeds have innumerable benefits and have been used for variety of ailments and their prevention ranging from heart disease to cancers. low carbohydrate content make it an incredibly valuable functional food containing around 25 per cent of both soluble and insoluble fibers including 12.5 per cent mucilage. Obesity has attained almost an epidemic proportion across the globe. It is major health concern even in children and adolescents leave alone

middle aged individuals. In addition to aesthetic aspects, it is a precursor for numerous health concerns particularly high blood pressure, diabetes, dyslipidemias, obstructive sleep apnea, varicose veins to name a few of them. There is probably a genetic predisposition to obesity,in a large majority of persons due to faulty life style. However, lack of physical activity along withbad eating habits together constitute themajor reason for such life-style based diseases and ailments. Mucilage is a water soluble gel forming fiber. On absorption of liquid, it swells significantly. Its presence in stomach gives a feeling of fullness and satiety thereby reducing the urge to eat more. Furthermore, its transition through the intestine modulates favorably the absorption of nutrients. Flax seeds, because of high fiber content, provide bulk to the intestinal contentsacting as an excellent gentle natural laxative. This favorable modulation of bowel movements and absorption of nutrients help to lose extra pounds easily. The soluble fiber of these seeds trap cholesterol and fats in the intestines thereby reducing their absorption.

This wonderful super food also provides innumerable nutrients: Omega 3 fatty acids They have been recognized in numerous trials to be protective against heart disease. In fact American Heart Association strongly recommend their use as a protective health nutrient. Amongst more than one hundred twenty recognized sources of Omega 3 fatty acids worldwide, flax seeds top the list. The primary Omega 3 fatty acid found in Flax seeds is Alfa Linoleic acid (ALA). ALA in Flax seeds has been found to be stable in almost three hours of cooking at oven temperature ( Approximately 300 degree F or 150 degree C ). This ubiquitous property allow these seeds to be added easily to the baked eatables like muffins and breads.

Lignans They are fiber like compounds which provide antioxidant protection due to their structure as polyphenols. It is a type of phytoestrogen with claims to be a powerful anti oxidant, anti tumor, anti viral, anti fungal and anti bacterial agent.

Minerals Flax seeds are a very rich source of Phosphorus, Potassium, Manganese, Magnesium,Selenium and Zinc –all essential in weight loss.

Ways to add flax seeds to your diet Flax seeds if not chewed properly, can go undigested, flushed out your system! Here are a few ways you can consume them… l Can be added in the batter for making rotis, cookies, cakes, breads, pancakes, etc in the form of ground flax seeds. l Can use them for making granola bars, add them to cereal, oats, porridge, salads, soups, and muesli. l Mix flax seeds in shakes, smoothies, dips, accompaniments, soups and stews l You can even have them with yoghurt

Vitamin B complex Almost all the essential Vitamin B’s like Thiamine,Riboflavin, Folate, Niacin,Pantothenic acid are found in these seeds. Therefore, any weight loss regimen without doubt must include one or two tablespoons of Flax seeds per day. They can be taken in a variety of forms after rounding or grinding. If one wants to take them after grinding, then it should be done immediately before consuming. Alternatively, they should be stored in a covered glass jar in a refrigerator as the flax oil begins to oxidize immediately after coming in contact with air. So go ahead and sprinkle it on your salad, soup, yoghurt or bake it in your bread. Happy slimming! October 2016 | www.thelifestylejournalist.com | TheLifestyleJournalist |

The Pulsating-

Oshin Brar

S

he has got over two dozen authentic Phulkari’s at home to love and flaunt! Meet this real-time fan of Phulkari art, who has inherited the wonderful dupattas as heirloom from her mother and grandmother. Oshin Brar, who is set to commence shooting for her fourth film in October this year, is a vivacious and vibrant girl in the Punjabi Film Industry. Here is a delightful chat with her…

How did your acting career begin? I hail from a family of doctors and IAS officers. So when I first disclosed to my family the desire to be an actor, they were completely taken aback! However, it was my mother who supported me throughout and it was due to her belief in me that I went on to take a formal training from Anupam Kher’s acting institute in Mumbai. It was after that I came in contact with Diljit Dosanjh, Satinder Sartaaj while shooting for a couple of video songs. My mother has been a strong support for me through all this. In fact she is the one with whom I discuss all the projects. Tell us about your debut movie‘Mukhtiar Chadha’… It was during a shoot for video song that Diljit Dosanjh and Director Gifty offered me a role in the movie, Mukhtiar Chadha. Working with Diljit was a wonderful experience in itself. Although the release of movie was delayed due to some technical reasons but the response of audience was quite enthusiastic and positive. So how do you describe your connection with Punjab? Honestly, since I have my roots in

Punjab, it really has a special place for me. Therefore, I always wanted to create a strong base for myself in Punjabi Film Industry before moving on in my career. Being a Punjabi, my natural language skill helps me to justify the character and give a natural feel in the movies. Not all youngsters make it to films at your age. What has made you succeed in carving out a niche for yourself in film industry? I think it is my passion and focus that has helped me. Had I not pursued my dream, I would have been trapped in some medical college. I did what I really wanted to do. And I think it is only when you follow your heart that you are truly able to succeed in your life. Did formal acting course help you as an actor? Do what your heart says! If you force yourself into doing something without any passion, it would lead you nowhere but misery. Acting schools can boost your confidence but it is only on the movie set that you actually realize ‘the actor’ dwelling inside you. Acting schools can just guide, but once you begin

I did what I wanted to do. When you follow your heart truly, success surely comes along! My mother has been a strong support throughout my journey

working professionally you explore the actor in you. What is your take on Phulkari and Bagh? Somehow our beautiful traditional weaving forms are vanishing because of the western influence but it will be a delight to see if the phulkari industry flourishes with apositive response from the consumers.

the Death & Revival of

& Bagh... Here is the tale of a fascinating art, a formidable craft tradition of Indiawhich managed to live through centuries and is embedded as a special feature in every celebration, every festivity in the land of Punjab- the Phulkari & Bagh. ‘A once deadand then reborn’ art of India. Dr. Neha Miglani explores the world of Phulkari, the ups and downs of its journey and discusses the standpoints with veterans in the field……

I

n 2013, when Manish Malhotra used Phulkari in his costumes for Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week, worn by celebs Jacqueline Fernandez and Esha Gupta, suddenly the media went schmoozing about Phulkari; the magazines, the newspapers even fashion curators began highlighting its elegance. The craft traditions, naturalness, Indian textiles, and the Indian cultural traditional at large has so much to offer to the world of fashion. Phulkari (and Bagh)- so much Indian and with such deep traditional connection with Punjab, has risen from ashes, managed to survive

through the journey and is no longer a dying art of India! However, it still manages to endure the conflicts of modernity and originality of hand work. It continues to be an integral part of the Punjabi festivityblending both the traditional and modern sensibilities. Some say it got revived, few others lament the onset of ‘computerized work era’ which marred the real hand-made Phulkari art and its true recognition, and still others are attempting to revive it like crusaders. Incidentally, certain women from Punjab cities like Patiala continue to do this art work themselves even today and serve orders to

46 | TheLifestyleJournalist | www.thelifestylejournalist.com | October 2016

special customers only, therefore contributing significantly in keeping the art alive with ‘taste’ rather than need. However, ground realities of artisans are sad and remain unsatisfying. Quest for innovation among new age designers and a stimulating marketing strategy, we concur (after having spoken to a wide spectrum of stake-holders in the field), can do the trick of giving this art form a true place in the world of fashion! Here is an attempt to capture the world of Phulkari and to lighten up your interest in this fascinating Indian (Punjabi at heart) art form…

F

From the outlook of an Art Historian

D

r. Alka Pande, an ace art historian, has been a strong advocate of Phulkari and Bagh preservation. She is responsible for curating several significant and perceptive exhibitions in India and abroad, giving a name to some of the most upcoming and influential artists, photographers and sculptors. She is currently engrossed as the Consultants Arts Advisor and Curator of the Visual Arts Gallery at the India Habitat Centre, New Delhi. She also has expertise in art advisory services on art procurement and investment. She shares her thoughts on the current situation and how it can be brought to the main arena in the fashion world… How do you rate the contemporary condition of Pulkari in India? Phulkari outside Punjab is still not that well known, as are other works like chikankaari orgujrati mirror work. Organisations like SEWA and Dastaar have done a lot for the promotion of these two forms of embroidery. Chikankaari has also been promoted by the very fashionable, literally haute couture

gifted designers like Abu and Sandeep Khosla. Good exquisite Phulkari in its very fine form needs to be seen by connoisseurs and fashionistas. Phulkari is still limited to the areas of Punjab, majorly in Patiala, and to some extent in Haryana. Till it does not catch the eye of the fashionable elite it will still be seen as a rural and local craft and will not be able to get its due. Does it still struggle to survive? I think the struggle to survive is lesser than before. The Indira Gandhi National Centre for Arts (IGNCA) did a beautiful project on Phulkari. Jasleen Dhamija- the noted textile scholar has

done significant work and promotion of Phulkari as has Chotey Bharaney, the well-respected antique dealer and collector. The stunning collection of Phulkaris by Chotey Bharaney was shown at the Gallery Art Motif in New Delhi and Jasleen Dhamija executed a brilliant curation of the show. Jasleen Dhamija has written extensively about Phulkari in a most sensitive and insightful manner. But sadly, beyond Delhi Phulkari is still an obscure art. Are there any efforts being made (in your notice) for its revival? Yes, the workshop ‘1469’ (write it in capitals if it’s a proper noun) in Delhi has been working consistently in reviving Phulkari. The husbandwife duo of Harinder Singh and Kirandeep Kaur have held a unique event ‘Mela Phulkari’ at The India Habitat Centre a few times and are now planning to bring out a major publication on the subject in a couple of years. Documentation and work is in progress. Meanwhile, the banner of Phulkari is thriving and blooming at their outlets in Chandigarh and Janpath, New Delhi.

A life dedicated to preserving Bagh & Phulkari

J

asleen Dhamija, 83, is a veteran Indian textile art historian, crafts expert and a former UN worker. Based in Delhi, she is best known for her pioneering research on the handloom and handicraft industry, particularly about the history of textiles and costumes. She has remained a professor of Living Cultural Traditions at the University of Minnesota. Over the years, during her career as a textile revivalist and scholar, she has authored

several books on textiles, including Sacred Textiles of India (2014).

A major exhibition on Bagh and Phulkari was curated by Jasleen Dhamija for Gallery Art Motif, New Delhi in 2012. The gallery is now about 20 years old, set up by Mala Aneja in 1996 at A1-178 Safdarjung Enclave, Fourth Floor, New Delhi. The gallery showcases contemporary Indian art, with a focus on abstraction; and also holds exhibitions on textiles, one of which was the‘Bagh and Phulkari’ exhibition.

The journey of

Mela Phulkari Here is a piece from the diary of 1469 founders…… “In our journey with 1469, a conceptual brand, that showcases Panjab and its products, the beauty and character of the Baghs that were embroidered as a part of their daily chores by the women of Panjab, was discovered by us. Over the years this characteristic experiential craft which had an emotional and social connect with the people dwindled into a commercial embroidery technique of Phulkari. We decided to work with a two thronged approach to preserve and proliferate this craft. One was to collect and preserve whatever old pieces we could get hold of. Patterns on these pieces were clicked and saved digitally. On the other hand, we took up the task of uplifting the quality of the existing technique of making phulkari in the hinterland of Punjab. We brought Phulkari, in fashion, by making accessories using this embroidery. The traditional dupatta gave way to stoles, bags, potlis, kites, cushions and the likes. At 1469 we create an ambience of‘real’ Panjab

Harinder & Kirandeep Kaur, Founders- 1469 (who founded the concept of Mela Phulkari at India Habitat Centre, New Delhi along with art historian and a veteran in the field Dr. Alka Pande).

with the flavor of our products. Phulkari in its current and original form was a part of this range. 12 years

ago we started our project to collect all patterns used in phulkari work in the form of Baghs, chaddars, dupattas in various fabrics. The patterns and designs on the Baghs had significance to the ocassion they were made for. The vari da Bagh was made for a newly wedded girl. The Surajmukhi Bagh was presented at the birth of a son. The sainchi, thirma, baawan, chope all had a story to tell. We were delighted to discover and wanted to share our elation with the world. All this painstaking hand craftsmanship with such vibrant breathtaking results had to be shared with more audience. When we shared our collection of Baghs and passion for Panjab and its distinct culture with Dr. AlkaPande (an art historian) she wanted to curate an exhibition of the same in the Visual Arts Gallery at IHC. Thus began this venture called ‘Mela Phulkari’. With her guidance and encouragement we got an opportunity to reach an audience who would appreciate the creativity in this predominantly-agriculture- based state of Panjab. When we say Panjab we say and mean the undivided Panjab. We have done three editions so far on Mela Phulkari.”

All about the ‘Mela Phulkari’ initiative... As its founders quote- “Mela Phulkari is a movement, a celebration of the art, craft and culture of Panjab in its true essence and spirit”. In ‘Mela Phulkari-1’ (first edition) the rich craft of phulkari was introduced. In the second ‘Mela’ the duo along with Dr. Pande started thread of collaboration with other designers and design students. The third edition of the

‘Mela’ was a continuation of these efforts. In 2016, more and more people joined in creating a unified Panjab through the common thread of Phulkari. ‘Mela Phulkari-3’ (third edition) used Phulkari as a pivot to reinterpret stories about Panjab. Phulkari is a tool which signifies various connotations - past and present of Panjab. Phulkari is used as a metaphor for women empowerment, social bonding, narratives

of life, tributes to Panjab’s institutions, movements’ and heroes, places and people. It also cognate the inclusiveness of family bonding, primarily women, through tambu created with Baghs. Similarly, Khullasher is a collaborative effort where women in Sangrur are encouraged to create embroidered patches, their interpretations of Panjabi culture suggesting a motive or a poem.

Phulkari workers have taken up other part time jobs dreading the damage totheir eye sightin later age “Now the entire work has been computerized. It is cheap and also that now the workers are performing badly. The ladies could not deliver on time. Handwork is very rare- the real Phulkari. The work of the Muslim artisans, in comparison, is very neat. Although the work is expensive by there is an appreciative customerbase for such pieces. The quality of the handwork, its neatness and finesse has waned drastically. Earlier,it was the home-makers or the unlettered ladies who used to do this work at home. Now that the awareness of being educated has spread long and wide the present generation does not like doing this work. Also the drop in the virtue of patience and shortage of time has further marred the interest in this art form.Compared to the efforts they put by straining their eyes and devoting long hours of labor, they get insignificant results and profits. Computer work is cheaper and therefore the customers go in for that. I used to travel in villages and connect with women and acquire bedcovers from them. Even the workers employed under me have taken up part time jobs because they fear that after 50 years of age their eyes will become weak. Even movies show Phulkari which is computerized. Punjabi movies are being promoted but not the culture of the state. To boost the art and the artisans and for better results both appreciation with better remunerations will help this art from descending. “ -Anmol Sarkaria, from Patiala is among the first ones to bring Phulkari to bedcovers in Punjab with the help of her artisans. She has decades of experience in the art of Phulkari and runs her own fashion brand ‘Anmol Boutique’

Very shoddy work is done in some areas of Punjab which is nowhere near the beautiful Phulkari art “Though the situation in Punjab is leaning more towards computerization and more usage of machines, I am still continuing with the authentic hand work. I have been doing the art for 20 years and I am convinced to keep the art work alive. I am sad about the machine work since it has ruined the art. It is such a neat way of working with hand, but computerization of designs. I am doing Phulkari totally on orders. It takes three months to complete an order. It is deplorable to see that there are a lot of others in Punjab who are producing shoddy work. I still possess the Phulkari of my great grandmother, what a piece of art it is! Even my wedding Phulkari was made by those original workers. Those original clans of workers are no longer interested in this art. I am trying to create the work for the modern world, also with embellishments, without sacrificing on the sanctity of the original delight. Maharani Parneet Kaur, Mrs.Badal, Mrs. Manmohan Singh are some people who own my Phulkari. When Camilla Parker Bowles came to India, she was presented the very Phulkari that I had made. There are hosts of NGO’s working for restoration of Phulkari. We really need to preserve this work since it is a beautiful art.” - Simran Harika, an ace Phulkari artist, who creates Phulkari herself for specialized clients under the brand‘poppyharika’

High quality hand-work is still in demand. Government needs to promote artisans more “We have been conducting training programs in Phulkari since a long time. There are a lot of females working in this area even now but they should get their due and better and adequate payment for their hard work. I assume, there are more than 2 lacs women in Punjab who must be involved with this art. Lack of profits has demotivated them. With the onset of computerized Phulkari, thick threads are being used and market has g o t affected badly. Computerized phulkari is being sold for Rs2500 while handwork is being sold for Rs4000. Also,a lot of females get discouraged when shopkeepers do not pay them on time for their hard work. The former can be hand-washed and still in favorable demand butthe Bagh dupattas are not in such a vogue. Hand work that we are promoting has a great demand especially in overseas market. If the government supports more and market pays better labour, then Phulkari artisans will get promoted as well. For the artisans, getting into a new field is also tough. They will be happy if they are paid well, they will stay on. High quality hand work is still in demand even today. In Delhi, when exhibitions are conducted, Phulkari work is sold for Rs12,00,000 in the span of 15 days. So there is still scope and revival is happening. -Rekha Mann, founder of Patiala Handcrafts Society, has been working in the area of Phulkari preservation formore than 20 years and has trained more than 50,000 ladies in Punjab.

52 | TheLifestyleJournalist | www.thelifestylejournalist.com | October 2016

Experimentation and fusion can be a different kind of strategy to preserve this art “We need to improve a lot on this handicraft. Lack of finances coupled with exploitation of artisans is doing the real damage. So we need to add something new to it. Those who wish to preserve this art need to give it a new twist to create interest for art connoisseurs and even common people who appreciate art. I am adding some innovations to Phulkari,

while preserving the art in its traditional manner. It has slow growth when it comes to Phulkari as a business. The work available in the market is not up to the mark. Shopkeepers are exploiting workers and they are forced to make a lot of pieces in a single day which is nearly

impossible if the beauty of it is to be kept intact. -Lily Dhaliwal, is experimenting with Phulkari by creating new designs and adding stitches to it. She believes in blending it with modernity to match the new -age tastes.

Straight from grandmother’s wardrobe to digital library! “Literature and art has been the focus of Punjab Digital Library. PDL has been digitizing documents from 2003 and the thrust was on manuscripts and books. About two years back, we thought of starting Phulkari digitization as well. We developed a machine. It took a year to complete the work. From the last 6-7 months we are in the process of digitizing Phulkari. The purpose has been to preserve and keep the art live for future generations to see and admire the ethnic art form.Once Phulkari designs are digitized, it will be easy to reproduce it by art lovers (whether for self-use or commercial) and it will remain alive. It is important to preserve the old designs. Generations in future would know what their great-grandmothers and what grandmothers wore. There are two sources through which we are gathering these old Phulkaris. We gathered several of them from anumber of grandmothers alsomet and interacted with a lot of elderly people at their homes. Second way was through the collectors who have them in abundance. There are people who have 100-200, all distinctly different, collections of Phulkari and we are in constant touch with them for more original designs and art to preserve. - Davinderpal Singh, Cofounder of Punjab Digital Library (PDL). Punjab Digital Library, a non-profit organization was started by a couple of youngsters from Punjab to keep its tradition and culture alive.

The Outfit of Love

The costumes of ‘Heer’ were known to be largely Phulkari. That is how historical notes have described her appearance to be.

Marriage Eligibility

During earlier times in Punjab, a bride’s eligibility and credibility was judged on the number of Phulkari’s she had made. Often the groom’s side would pop this question to measure the quantum of skill and tenaciousness of the girl.

Phulkari & the Punjabi Weddings

According to the Punjab wedding customs, which are followed till date, the Punjabi bride is brought to the wedding mandap under a beautiful Phulkari Chaddar/Dupatta, usually escorted by her brothers who hold this cloth over her head. Earlier, this cloth for the bride used to be woven by close family members.

The Sad Tale of Exploitation Continues

Experts on Phulkari opine that the artisans continue to face exploitation at the hands of the shopkeepers, even rich and affluent ladies, particularly those who (on the pretext of promoting Phulkari) use labour and eventually sell off the material at high prices. Some others blame computerized designsimitating Phulkari as the real culprit of downgrading the real, traditional art. Some genuine foundations like The Nabha Foundation and certain others are working hard to restore the glory of Phulkari in real sense.

An Indian textile and Phulkari expert- Dr. Anu H. Gupta who did her doctoral thesis on the subject of Phulkari summarizes the journey of this art in these graphics….

Birth & Origin Theory 1

Historians often quote that Phulkari originated from North West frontier province in undivided India and is better known as Jisti work in Pakistan. Trading and migration in this region with the nomad people of Afghanistan and Central Asia links its origin with Afghanistan and beyond. The origin is also traced to migration of Jat people from Centra Asia. Some assert that Persians brought this form of embroidery to India via Jammu and Kashmir as resham(silk) thread used in embroidery comes from Persia.

Theory 2

Scriptures indicate that Phulkari was the trousseau of the famous Heer of HeerRanjha. Waris Shah indicates this in 1725. Others like Banabhatta also point to the traces of an art which resembles Phulkari and one also finds mention in Guru Granth Sahib.

Phulkari still survives here in real sense!

Although theoretically one may cite places in Punjab where Phulkari work can be found, experts however unravel the ground reality and summarize the following provinces and areas where Phulkari artists and art is still present in the year 2016 • Patiala • Nabha • Rajpura • DeraBassi • Fatehgarh Sahib • Sangroor • Roopnagar • Traces can be found in parts of Moga, Faridkot, Bhatinda etc.- The original phulkari on khaddar pieces can be found here as a heritage collection with many families of Malwa region. These prized pieces are used as a ceremonial wrap especially in marriages.

Decline of Phulkari

Experts suggest that the British created market for Phulkari, popularized it as well as commercialized it. So women, who used to earlier do it for creative quest and as a part of their tradition, now started doing it for money. It was a native art confined to homes and was for personal usage. It was home grown, home spun and woven fabric. Dosard or dohralida implied the two layers of veils/dupatta that women wore in early Punjab. Even hands of women were hidden under the Phulkari shawls. When the society became relatively modern and Purdah system began to fade away in villages, the value of Phulkari, in some ways, gradually went down. 56 | TheLifestyleJournalist | www.thelifestylejournalist.com | October 2016

Revival of Phulkari

It was in 1970’s and later in 1990’s that Phulkari got revived with full bloom. NGO’s began working to save the dying art and there was an urgency felt to preserve Phulkari. It was also seen as a means to empower women in parts of Punjab. Till date, individuals, organizations and NGO’s continue to work to preserve Phulkari. Another revival theory suggests that people of Bhavalpur (Pakistan) who got uprooted during partition and settled in India (Tripura in Patiala, Samana, etc.) began making Phulkari and worked for peanuts (as low as 50 paise) on chiffon and this, in some way, preserved the art.

Indian Film Industry & Phulkari

Although many would hesitate to call it a true Phulkari, due to the computerized patterns and machine work, there are a host of Indian movies which popularized Phulkari….. Movie- Veer Zara pattern Costumes Worn by-PrietyZinta Movie- Hum Aapke Hain Kaun Costumes Worn by-Maduri Dixit

Know the Signature Style with

RUBY’S SIGNATURE

She believes in handling the aesthetic requirements of customers through soft, subtle and evergreen looks for window dressing and room decor. Meet Ruby Gupta- a self-made entrepreneur and a phenomenal woman of substance. A qualified fashion designer, she gauged her own interest for ‘soft interiors’. It was then that she used her expertise of painting, cut works, stitching and embroidery and redefined the trend of curtains, fabrics and linen. Establishing her own brand- Ruby’s Signature, she truly has her own signature style that sets her apart in the market. TLJ writer Divjot Kamboj strikes a conversation

Please tell us about your work specialisation… We at the Ruby’s Signature not just believe in selling but knowing and telling as to what would go with a given design, decor, place and purpose. Once the house is ready... we provide our sincere services to help you make it a Home. Our range of products include designer curtains, sofa fabrics, bed linen, bath linen, table linen, decorative and corporate gifts. We offer a one-stop-shop for all your home furnishing and gifting needs!

When and how did you develop your interest in designing and interiors? I ama qualified dress designer. I was always curious and used to read books to add to my knowledge database and skill. Back then, nearly two decades ago, there was not much exposure in my hometown-Yamunanagar. One day I decided to refurnish my father’s hotel in my hometown. It was then that I realised that my passion lies in refurnishing and giving a new look to any building with soft interiors. Ever since I have chased my passion and everything else has fallen in place. What is so special about the working style at ‘Ruby’s Signature’? We at the Ruby’s not just sell but make sure that we tell our customers about the various fabrics, shades and design that would suit the place, people and purpose. The designs that they choose must match their home and surroundings. Curtains have a shelf life of 5-6 years and they must be selected accordingly. So, we educate our customers and fulfil their dreams with

a sense of belongingness. Our mission is to give shape to their vision.

What were the challenges you had to face in this field? Initially, the journey was full of challenges. People were not aware of different options available when it came to decorating their homes with soft interiors. There was a need to create a lot of awareness. The means of communication were not that developed till some years back. I would travel from one site to another, understand the structures, the tastes and specific needs of the people, then work manually for 18-20 hours a day and come up with unusual designs. My work has spread only by word of mouth, since there was no internet, no websites. This ‘Signature Style’ has been built from scratch. Is there any specific brand of fabrics that you use for your curtains? You give me anything and I can create a window dressing out of it, be it a saree or a dupatta! I believe that no one can teach you how to use a fabric in a particular way. I consider it as a God-gift. To me, the use of fabrics come naturally. I can use cotton, linen, viscos, velvet… in a nutshell- Just anything! I even refurbish the old curtains at different sites. I believe that one needs to be daring enough to visualise and creative enough to execute. Is the demand more in residential or commercial sector? Would you like to name a few famous people who availed your services? Our work has more demand in the residential sector. The people these days are very keen to add more life and feel to their houses. One’s house is a reflection of one’s own self. Our work has been appreciated and admired by many, all over years. We have covered numerous sites in different states as well as overseas. The residence of singer-actor Gippy Grewal, the Governor’s Office, site of noted architects and many more have been revamped by us.

are simple and subtle, giving them an evergreen look.Classical trend involve curtains with royal borders, embroideries or paintings making them the highlighters and adding to the class of a given sight.‘Fusion’ is a new trend set by us. In this, there are straight line curtains with catchy patches of cut works, laser cuttings etc. whichenhances the appeal and charm.

What is your specific style when it comes to soft interiors? We see curtains day-in and day-out so it is necessary that the curtains should be subtle and soothing. We soon get used to bright colours and heavy designs but such curtains, after a few years, begin to give a desponding look. So I always help my clients select the designs that would go with their ambience and always look evergreen. Occasionally, the clients can refurbish their homes with other soft interiors like cushion covers, fancy bed spreads, sofa linen etc. Do you also educate your customers on interiors? There are certain things that one needs to bear in mind while selecting the curtains. First of all they should be aware of the use and need of sheers, linings, black-outs etc. Secondly, they need to take care of the direction of the window. For instance, it is imperative to use heavy black-out linings in the curtain used for the South facing window. This is because it is exposed to direct exposure of sunlight which damages the fabric and life of the curtains. The same is not needed in case of a north facing window.

Would you like to share with our readers the latest trends in curtains? The three major trends are- Minimalistic, Classical and Fusion. Minimalistic trend is usually followed in the modern day houses. These curtains

Rhea Pillai &

her Temple House 66 | TheLifestyleJournalist | www.thelifestylejournalist.com | October 2016

Rhea Pillai has an innate warmth to her beautiful face as kindness reflects through her mystifying eyes. Honored as the “Woman of the Year” along with RaveenaTandon, Anoushka Shankar and RituBeri on International Women’s Day in 2003, the former ace model denies to look anything less than beautiful with the vivacious and unbridled glee evident on her flawless face. In an easy, breezy interview with TLJ she graciously shares her love for traditional Indian sarees and her myriad perspectives on the modelling industry.

C

ould you tell us about your new passion for traditional Indian sarees? Where and how did this

begin? The Temple House is a venture by me that aims to celebrate the element of reverence and prayer in different ways. Exhibiting temple sarees, Lucknowi chikankari work and many more to come is one way to share what I love to wear when I attend Homas, Pujas, other spiritual functions, traditional celebrations or simply while going to church. What would you advice young girls who aspire to try their luck in the world of modelling? Would you give a step by step guide for amateur

models- how and where do they approach for right platform? The modelling industry has evolved a lot. There is more professionalism and better remunerationon the professional front. Apart from that, the conventional homes have begun to accept this profession with greater resilience.Indian women by and large are very beautiful and as we have become far more aware of style, body language, poise; all one needs is confidence, belief in themselves and the ability to remain true to their own uniqueness. There is no other you. Claim it. Feel beautiful and people will recognise it. How much life does a serious

model have when it comes to crucial assignments? Does having a glamorous professional life/career necessarily affect one’s personal relationships or family? Today, there are many modelling agencies that handle your work for you. A portfolio/head shots in hand and an agency number on your fingertips can take you places. On every front, balance is the key. Even in the entertainment world, the professional and personal life can be harmonious if there is a balanced approach. What is your life mantra? Be true to yourself. Live every moment to the fullest!

The EF WORD

Discover Your Style What is a personal style and how to find it? Finding your personal style is actually about discovering yourself. Atika Dhandia explains how!

T

Insist on yourself, never imitate – Ralph Waldo Emerson

here is lot of room for experimenting all the way and then arriving at a strong sense of style that suits you and makes you feel great every day and everywhere. But to arrive at this, first you have to know yourself, who you are and what is important to you instead of blindly following a bunch of rules dictated by a website or friends or a magazine. Personal style is a consistent creative process – one that evolves as you do .There are no rules to it, except the ones that you make for yourself – and even those are made to be broken. When I am out and about, I constantly see people trying to look their absolute best, and many of them do look good but I always end up admiring those who ‘Look Different’ because they are not wearing something that screams ‘Look at me’ but by standing out doing something different (wearing flat shoes with an evening dress or adding a real flower accessory in their hair or just what my friend does adding her signature touch by wearing a red lipstick). Personal Style Is A Look That Is All Your Own It allows your own combination of tastes, desires, interests to shine

through. Many people just like to copy paste what they see in magazines, on TV, in films and as a result everyone looks the same and Ah! So Boring!! Embrace Yourself and Your History Even if you feel that you have had a pretty plain boring life or a life which until now was downright unstylish, you still have a story - where you grew up, who your parents and friends are, how you became interested in clothes and style, what is your budget, what are your aspirations, who are your idols, and most importantly, how your style has evolved over the years. And it is impossible to emphasize the importance of self-acceptance in this whole equation Self Confidence, a Boost both For You and Your Style Finding your personal style means feeling exhilarated every day as you walk out of your front door, knowing that you look great before anyone tells you so, and not caring if they do not. Keeping an open mind will give you the chance to learn more from your surroundings and embrace what you already love about yourself. Find the looks and moods that spark your imagination and encourage your inner personality to shine through. Here I remember a very dear friend of mine,

Bawa-a brilliant and famous public speaker of great following amongst youth and an even more brilliant human being, how he walks so confidently on stage wearing a T-shirt with (hold your breath) white stringed night pajamas and looks a zillion dollars because it is his inner being and brilliance with his ‘Attitude’ that shines through him inside out. Celebrate Your Creativity with Your Moods If you have personal style, you can change your look day to day and always look like yourself. The famous model Kate Moss has this ability to be, ladylike in a classic evening dress meeting the Queen and grungy bohemian in a poncho the next day for a Music festival and feminine again wearing jeans, carrying a Birkin Bag with ballerina flats while going shopping. She can only pull this off because she knows who she is and what suits her. Style will not appear in your life on its own you will have to give priority to your ‘Me’ time in your life and truly go out of your way at times and make an effort at least to give your best when you dress up. And as far as I am concerned, personal style for me is being creative and having fun not with just my dress and accessories but with my ‘Attitude’ too.

Use of teak wood, glass doors, sleek furnishings and plants add light and space to this villa.

The magic duo Harleen and Jaspratap have been designing and making dream homes for clients

he architectural firm Dimensions has been consistently delivering unique living spaces, build-to-order dream homes and high-impact commercial structures since its establishment in 2005 in the Le Corbusier designed marvel city of Chandigarh. The firm was set-up by a husband wife duoarchitect Harleen Virk, a gold medallist from the renowned Chandigarh College of Architecture, and Jaspratap S. Virk, an engineer and an ace entrepreneur. What makes ‘Dimensions’ stand out in the market is an inhouse availability of architects, interior designers and engineers, all under one roof! Harleen, is placed among the senior architects of the region and empanelled in Greater Mohali Development Authority (GMADA). The duo talks to Divjot Kamboj about their venture, togetherness, profession and much more‌..

LOOKING FOR A

DREAM ABODE?

Let ‘Dimensions’ be your first destination! How did you both meet? On what principle was your joint venture based? Surprisingly! The two of us came together because of the matrimony. Although nobody believes that. It was in the year 1994 that we got married and in the year 2005 we decided to create a joint venture. Subsequently I, being an architect, and Jas, being an engineer-cum-marketing expert, commenced ourjoint ventureDimensions. Our beautiful blend of creativity, innovation and marketing has eventually paved its way into architecture, interiors and landscaping. How is Dimensions unique? What extra do your offer as compared to your counterparts in the market?

We offer a ‘one stop solution’ to all our clients. Our venture has eliminated the tussle between the constructors and the architects. While our professionalism makes us ‘reliable’, our personal touch makes us‘dependable’. We not just plan on paper but execute our plans on the ground. We believe in making the dreams of our customers a reality! So from the viewpoint of a client, what are the benefits of having everything in-house? Most of the times the clients lack knowledge about the real estate dealers, contractors, builders etc. Our in-house team give all the answers to- Who, What, Where and Why. We are self-sufficient in offering our services in designs, approvals, constructions, interiors as well as furniture. Both our

clients as well as employees have confidence in us. Our firm has fix vendors on our pay-rolls. We are able to procure the materials at reduced costs which does not hit too hard on the pockets of our clients. Moreover, instead of offering a choice of contractors, we have a tailor-made team of civil constructors, stone cutters, wood dealers, painters etc. which suits each and every client and is convenient. We do not sublet work. All the work at Dimensionsis done by its employees and not contractors. It is because of this reason that we not only provide consistency in our services but also ensure upgradation. What is the genre of projects that your firm deals in?

our passion alive. It was after a decade of our marriagewhen our daughters grew up that the passion we had nurtured for years eventually became our profession. I also believe that getting into the profession together, after a particular age, has been an added advantage for us as we both our understanding of the profession and the outlook for it has matured. We have nurtured our dreams withsubstantial time and hard work to come where it now stands.

The architecture and the construction services are independent. The architectural services are offered to numerous clients across different states and even overseas. We take up over 12 to 15 construction projects per annum. We have undertaken assignments in almost all sectors of Panchkula, Mohali and Chandigarh. Mainly residential but commercial projects too are handled by us.

Along with all this we create two to three houses on our own and make them available to our customers. From where do you draw yourinspiration? While Jas was making his career in the field of marketing, I could always gauge his interest for property and construction. He would always encourage me to work in my field and this kept

76 | TheLifestyleJournalist | www.thelifestylejournalist.com | October 2016

What were the lessons that you learnt on your way? With each project I became more professional in my work. I had realised that money is needed to run every organisation. I used to get too attached to each assignment I got. Sometimes, for instance, when an architecture designs a beautiful home, the clients end up getting their own interior related items, furniture, etc. that spoils the essence of the design. My professional experience taught me

to live with certain anomalies. Tell us about some latest trends in this field. Majorly the trend is Modernistic. Such houses are straight lined with lots of glassing and use of Italian stones. Apart from this, the classical trend never fades away. Another interesting trend, majorly seen in the modern day offices, is the ‘Minimalistic Trend’ in which there are no false ceilings, no paint on walls, and not much use of wood or laminates. This shift from an over-whelming to a raw look helps in saving cost and adds to the sustainability of the structure. What is your take on Sustainable Architecture? We believe in creating healthy homes. All are blueprints are as per the seismic Zone 4 making our projects earthquake resistant. Using fly ash bricks and hollow concrete blocks gives better insulation to the basic structure. We give primary importance to rainwater harvesting in almost all our projects. The most interesting feature of our designs is the treatment of the last level of the house. The harsh exposure to the sunlight and rainwater affects the life of the roofs. We treat them with hollow tiles and water proofing

choosing designs that are suitable to the geography and considering the sunlight and wind directions while coming up with a structure would make it ecofriendly. We call it sustainable because we do not practice the same. Any tips you would give to people who are planning to create their own dream home? The first and foremost tip is, immediately rush to us! And all the other tips will fall in place. On a serious note, consult not a friend but a friend architect. The point where it all begins, you should try and associate with a friend architect with whom you feel associated and who will be there to guide you. To remain involved it is very important for you to look into the projects that this architect is currently handling and if those projects relate to what you want. methodology. Terraces are the least visited areas of any home. We utilise them by creating gazebos, bars, kitchen, sitting and party area making it the favourite for all times. What are your views about the Eco-Friendly structures? The root of this concept of eco-friendly structures is Vastu which means creating harmony with the nature. People have attached their religious sentiments to Vastu while it is one of the most scientific way of scheming a blueprint. Using materials which are locally available,

What is the message you have for young architects and engineers? To be a good architect, you would need to be passionate about your work and have patience. It is very important to balance the needs of the clients and add creativity to your work. You will have to be a bit of a psychologist, a bit of a doctor, a bit of an engineer and an architect. On a lighter note, the 4 P’s of marketing are essential so we have 4Ps for DIMENSIONS i.e. Passion, Patience and Perseverance leads to Paisa!

Looking closely, one would have realised that each student had a speaker and each of them was paying close attention to their respective speakers. It was a welcoming ‘University Fair’ in the city where more than 15 universities from United States had travelled to the beautiful city for spreading awareness about education and to dispel a lot of myths about US education. We got into a conversation with them to find out more about their visit and it turned out that most of them were visiting Chandigarh for the first time. Jobeth, the Managing Director of Linedon, told “Our Company is a 35-year-old premier company and we have been organising University visits for almost 25 years in India. We travel with accredited, public and state universities and this is our second visit to Chandigarh’.Indian students happen to constitute one of the largest student population filling up the US universities. Last year, 130000 students visited US on F-1 visa.

Vijaya, another Linedon representative said that the main reason for the students to migrate in such large number is primarily for research opportunities at UG and PG level. Also, US education offers lot of flexibility. She also added that Indian students enrich the classrooms as they are very knowledgeable and they contribute billions of dollars towards US economy. “Indian students add the international flavour to the campus,” she said. Speaking to the university representatives was an interesting experience who guided ‘what was the right way to select a US university’. Aaron, a representative from the university of Salisbury said,“Indian students come across a lot of misinformation as counsellors with right guidance are not available most of the times. We try and give them reliable and right information on these visits. Our university also builds confidence and relations with the university when we return every year to speak to them”. Megan Mankerian from Valparaiso University added that while applying to the university, a student needs to think out of box and should take time understanding about the university

environment and go for the one which suits his academic and research tastes.

Stacey, from Florida Institute of Technology said, “When a student travels to the US, one should visit few university campuses to get a feel of the environment. He should choose carefully between an urban anda suburban campus.” Interestingly, Indian students are overly concerned about their SAT and ACT scores and feel that it is going to be the sole criterion to decide their admission. This however was not the sole factor to decide admission! According to Megan,“Admission would require looking at their profile in a holistic manner. It is not just the SAT score but leadership skills and extra-curricular activities andalso essays written will play a huge role in deciding the admission. “There are universities not looking for SAT score as they understand that all Indian students are not SAT ready. Fairfield University, University of San Francisco, Ball State University, Valparaiso University, George Mason University, Florida Institute of Technology are some universities which are not interested in the SAT scores. According to Pranav Pradhan from foothill Deanza

Community College, “It is important for a student to build a profile in a holistic manner. We are looking for a balanced student who has done well in academics and extra-curricular activities too.” Timothy from University of Fairfield added, “I would love to speak to Indian students to dispel any disbelief. The important thing to remember is that a student must enjoy and be happy in the

environment.” All the university representatives emphasized that a student should apply to multiple universities and should always develop his profile in a wholesome manner. So students, stop worrying just about your grades. Go out and explore your passion as well! You may not have known this, but it could well be a deciding factor in admission!

Better than the Best! Here is how Indian Paralympians bagged medals in sporting events in which the real time Olympians failed to do so writes Manvi Dewan

he Rio Paralympics 2016 has been the best so far for India! Not only the Paralympians clinched more medals than their Olympic colleagues but have also outshined in those sporting events in which Olympians have never won a medal. India bagged four medals including two gold in 2016 Rio Paralympics. The golden moment for the country came when Mariyappan Thangavelu’s breathtaking high jump won him gold in the men’s T-42 event. At a tender age of five, Thangavelu’s right leg got damaged in a bus accident, but that fateful day couldn’t damage his spirits. This 21 year old young lad made history by becoming the first Indian high-jumper to win a gold at the Paralympics, with a leap of 1.89 metres. His compatriot Varun Singh Bhati’s bronze medal in the same event

doubled the celebration for India. On the other hand, if we look at the performance of Indian high jumpers In Olympics history, the national record, set by India’s Harishankar Roy in 2004, is 2.25m. While the qualifying height for Rio was 2.29m, the national record of 2.25m couldn’t have given India a place in Rio Olympics 2016. In the women’s category, Sahana Kumari made the national record of a 1.92m jump in 2012. But the record falls a bit short as the qualification mark required for Rio Olympics was 1.93m. Moving to a competition that requires a lot of strength and power, India’s Deepa Malik who was paralysed from the waist down became the first Indian woman to clinch a silver medal in shot put at the 2016 Paralympics. Unlike high jumpers, there have been qualifications by shot-putters in Olympics but there

are no records set or medals won. Devendra Jhajhariya closed the Indian Medal tally with gold in the javelin throw F46 event. He became the first Indian to have bagged two gold medals at the games, the first one being in 2004 Athens Paralympics. Jhanjhariya was 8 when he lost his left hand after accidentally touching an electric wire. Despite the loss, he has made several international records and is the recipient of the prestigious Arjuna Award and Padma Shree. Olympic as well as Paralympic

athletes in India have to face challenges when it comes to drawing attention of people towards other sports, as cricket continues to be an obsession with the Indians. Of late, there has been a slight shift, thanks to the sportspersons who continue to make us proud internationally. Not to forget the recent Olympics badminton final when P.V. Sindhu literally forced Indians to be glued at the TV screens with the same enthusiasm that usually goes with cricket and DipaKarmarkar’s famous vault in gymnastics at Rio.

Although Indian athletes have to overcome enormous hurdles for topping the medal list, things are tougher for Paralympians as they have to face several challenges, be it due to their disability or lack of support. The Paralympians have not only brought laurels to the country but also popularised those track and field events that would inspire budding athletes to consider taking up!
