The Gossip Queen on Social Media

Pammi Aunty Meet Ssumier Pasricha, a TV actor you may remember from ‘Sasural Simar Ka’. But it is not Simar’s adventurous ‘Sasural’ that won him fame and a huge fan following. Instead, it is Pammy Aunty- the quintessential gossip queen and an everyday PunjabiAunty-next-door that has made him a household name. A purple towel wrapped on his head, some rollers stuck onto it, neem pack applied on face, tacky pink goggles on and Ssumeir is transformed into the Pammy Aunty ready to take her Youtube and Instagram followers rolling on the floor with her tremendous comic skills. 10 | TheLifestyleJournalist | www.thelifestylejournalist.com | November 2016

when she really does not. This is what makes her all the more fun and hilarious.

I get messages from Chicago, Thailand, Sydney where people dress up like Pammi Aunty and throw Pammi Aunty themed parties.

It gives me immense pleasure that people have begun to regard Aunty Pammi as a kind of icon as well as a medium for voicing various social issues. She has talked about Cancer, AIDS, Homosexuality, voting and more is still to come.

H

ow did the idea strike you, to get into this kind of comedy? Frankly, it was completely an unplanned thing. One fine day, my nephew asked me to join Snapchat. It was then that I started writing few lines and began to get an enthusiastic response from the people. Then I began posting my videos on Instagram and Youtube and by the 16th video, Pammi Aunty had gone viral whether it was Canada, Australia or Manhattan. I was getting hits from all around the world and eventually by the 29th video, where I was talking about the Euro cup, Rishi Kapoor tweeted about me and it was then I caught the eye of media and my channel got coverage. I did not expect the character of Pammi aunty to gain so much fame and popularity in such a short span of time. What is your vision behind creating the character of Pammi Aunty? Who is she based upon? Pammi Aunty is basically the amalgamation of the Chachis, Nanis, Mamis; all the ladies I have come across in my life, specially the Punjabi ladies who love to create chaos out of nothing. Pammi Aunty is upfront and she thinks that she knows everything

You are such a tremendously hilarious actor. What kind of motivation do you get for your work from your audience? Apart from all the appreciation for my work, many people are now doing Pammi Aunty themed parties around the world. I get messages from Chicago, Thailand, Sydney where people dress up like Pammi Aunty and throw theme parties named after her. It is an overwhelming response that I am getting from people globally and I feel so happy and fortunate to get such appreciation and love. You have also used your character to spread some wonderful causes, say for instance, to de-stigmatize homosexuality in India. Tell us more about it. It gives me immense pleasure that people have begun to regard Pammi Aunty as a kind of icon as well as a medium for voicing various social issues. She has talked about Cancer, AIDS, Homosexuality, voting and other important issues. I am happy that she has in a way become capable of delivering some wonderful messages to the youth and nation on a whole. There are various organizations that want me to put forth their causes through the character of Pammi Aunty. Further, I am planning to discuss cruelty towards animals. Any TV shows in pipeline? Right now I am working in Comedy Nights Bachao on Colours. What is your take on social media platforms coming up as a medium for displaying one’s creativity and talent? Social Media has become a brilliant platform to showcase anyone who got some talent. If you have talent and content, you can simply go there and woo the crowd with your creativity. You do not need anyone’s validation for that anymore. That way, this has created a revolution in the realm of entertainment. You just need to believe in yourself, have patience and use these platforms in a productive, creative and constructive manner.

Pack Your Bags &

Cruise through your Honeymoon

Our travel writer Neeharika Bhutani presents the perfect honeymoon guide to cruising by debunking the common myths. Here is all that you need to know

12 | TheLifestyleJournalist | www.thelifestylejournalist.com | October 2016

R

Finding an ideal cruise is not tough Before you dismiss it, figuring a cruise for your honeymoon is not a tough job. True, as a travel option, cruises are still considered exotic but the only thing exotic about them is the experience they provide. Imagine exploring a new port everyday without moving around with your luggage or having entertainment facilities available at your fingertips! With a little understanding, it is easy to see that booking a cruise is affordable, all-inclusive and extremely relaxing. You are spoilt for choices A cruise is a round trip that covers several

emember Zoya Akhtar’s 2015 hit film Dil Dhadakne Do? For me, the movie was less about the relationships and more about travel. The cruise ship took center stage in the film with its plush rooms, snazzy dining options and trendy nightclubs. The long chats under the starry ocean night sky and the romantic midnight swim with the blue ocean around convinced me that a Honeymoon at sea is a must-do for every newly wed.

destinations and eventually brings you back to the starting point. Travelling on this luxury vessel is as much about the journey at sea as the fun about the various destinations it covers. The facilities on a cruise can make most seven-star resorts green with envy; open-air dining on deck to Michelin star restaurants, the options are endless. Swimming pools, hot tubs, lounges, libraries, gyms, clubs, casinos, fitness centers, spas and cinemas are all a common feature to almost every liner. The one thing a cruise guarantees is to spoil your beloved and you with choices it enfolds.

14 | TheLifestyleJournalist | www.thelifestylejournalist.com | November 2016

How to choose your cruise? The five T’s hold your answer There are over a dozen major cruise liners with more than 100 ships at sea. Destinations range from Southeast Asia, Mediterranean, Northern Europe to the West Pacific Ocean. The timeline ranges from overnight, a week to a fortnight. The big question is how do you decide which cruise to choose?! Time, Temperature, Temperament and Topography are the 4 T’s that will help you find the answer. Cruises sail all through the year. Figure when and for how long would you like to cruise?

Next, understand the temperature and topography you would like to travel to. Cruises range from sunny town-hopping Mediterranean to chilly, northern lightsspotting Iceland. If you have a particular experience or destination you want to explore you can opt to cruise accordingly. But above these, the most important T is the temperament of the couple and the type of experience they are looking for. Are you a ‘laze-by-pool or a party-on-port’ type? Or is exploring a romantic destination and having a fine meal on-board,is more your thing. Do you want to be social and mingle with like-minded people on your trip? Or doyou prefer to be cozily left alone? Match your personality with your cruise for an ideal fit. What is an alternative way to choose? What do you shell out? You can also approach your choice in reverse. Select your cruise based on the cruise liner you find most appealing. This requires you to do a little bit of reading about the top liners in the world and what’s included in their trip. Some names you should be familiar with are Royal Caribbean International, Carnival Cruise Lines, Celebrity Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line, Princess Cruises, Holland America Line, Costa Cruises and MSC Cruises. Time to address the cost concerns! Let’s debunk the biggest myth upfront. Cruising is not an expensive proposition when compared to its land holiday counterparts. This is because a cruise fare includes accommodations, meals, access to on-board amenities and entertainment, transportation at sea, port duties and taxes. The category of room you choose plays an important role in the price you pay. Interior rooms without a sea view are the cheapest, while rooms with views and balconies often cost more. The duration of your cruise and the kind of facilities included on-board are other factors that affect the cost of your trip. Please note, airfare to the port of departure and visa requirements are generally not included in the cruise bookings and need to be arranged separately.

Still not convinced? Here is what you need to hear If you are still not convinced to cruise on your honeymoon, here’s a piece of news that will tip the scales. Now you can consider a luxury cruise to the Maldives right from Mumbai. The Cost neo-classica will sail in December covering locations like Mangaluru, Kochi, Colombo and Goa on its return trip from Maldives. The ship’s facilities include a casino, theatre, library, discotheque, ballroom, a slew of dining options (some with Jain menus), a bar, and a wellness centre complete with treatment rooms, sauna, a steam room, four Jacuzzis, two swimming pools and a gym. And for the cherry on top, you can savourall of this for Rs 43,000 per head on a twin-sharing basis,

inclusive of port taxes. Remember, the key to scoring an amazing deal in a cruise is to plan well in advance. Also, if you are honeymooning on a cruise, there are strong chances that the crew will go an extra mile to make your trip special. Speak to a good travel consultant for guidance on how to make the most of your trip at sea. If everything in your wedding is unique, don’t let your honeymoon be left behind. Set the trend with a cruise. It’s refreshing, relaxing and exotic enriching youwith unforgettable memories for life.

The Jewel Affair

Jewellery designer Queenie Singh has been crafting fine jewels for connoisseurs. With her name on the brand, do not be surprised if entertainment stars, architects, artists and other jewellery designers own and wear her pieces. Here is a conversation with her about jewels and more...… Your passion for jewels! So how and when did that happen? What is your vision for ‘Jewels by Queenie’? I started designing jewellery for myself when I was still a teenager. I have always been passionate about jewellery. Although I studied Mathematics yet developed passion for the intricacies of jewellery. I intend to put Jewels by Queenie on the global map and make a reputed international mark for it.

“It was at a very young age that I decided to build some sort of a mini empire of jewels, whether it is my own or for a business.”

Please tell us about your upbringing and how did it affect your love for jewels? My upbringing had nothing to do with my love for jewellery. I think that came to me because of my own passion for it. Although I come from a business family, nobody really is very passionate about jewellery in my family. It was just me who was different and had always admired jewellery. It was at a very young age that I decided to build some sort of a mini empire of jewels, whether for myself or for a business. You seem to have just the perfect body that any woman craves for! What are your fitness secrets?

Consistency, discipline and balance! I do not believe in diets because then you swing from high to low.I enjoy Yoga and Pilates, a combination of both! Meditation followed by yoga is a must for me. Is there another side to being a socialite? Does social limelight come with some taxes? It is basically your attitude that makes the difference. Media glare is always there but it is your own perspective and it is how seriously you take it. You have to continue your life and have your priorities set in a proper manner. Media cannot govern or ruin your life unless you allow it to. What is your idea of a contemporary Indian woman? A contemporary Indian woman is a woman who believes in herself and has faith in her abilities. Even if she may not be modern in her day to day lifestyle, her mind should be liberated of cynicism and self-doubt. Besides having a family life and looking after the children, she must follow her own passion whether it is in working or following some kind of creative pursuit because it makes one self dependent and grounded. Your life’s top mantra! Live and let live. Life is too short!

Book Review

“THE GIRL ON THE TRAIN” AUTHOR:

PAULA HAWKINS GENRE:

PSYCHOLOGICAL THRILLER

If you like reading this one, you should also go for “Gone Girl” by Gillian Fynn (if you have not already read it), “Dear Daughter” by Elizabeth Little, “The Kind Worth Killing” by Peter Swanson

I

f you are like me, you probably prefer reading THE BOOK prior to watching its on-screen adaptations. Well, even if you don’t fall into this category, I would recommend that you read this book anyway, right away! “The Girl on the Train” made its way to bookstores in January 2015, immediately taking the top spot on The New York Times Fiction Best Sellers of 2015 list and remaining there for a good thirteen weeks! The movie adaptation of the same hit theatres on October 7 this year. You may term it the post-“Gone Girl” fad, if you like, but the fact remains that the book itself was a huge rage the world over and with the recent movie release, it well continues to be. Hawkins’ story focuses on the lives of three women, Rachel Watson, Anna Watson, and Megan Hipwell. Much in sync with the story’s focus, Hawkins gives a first-person voice to all three characters. For someone who has just started reading the book, the oscillating narrative can be a tad too much to keep up with but 50 pages or so into the book, you feel at home with the alternating perspectives. Rachel is a troubled woman in her early 30s who, unable to come to terms with her unsuccessful marriage finds solace in alcohol. Although shehas been fired from her job, Rachel still takes the daily train to London city from her friend Cathy’s suburban home(where Rachel is basically a freeloader)every day. The ‘high’ point(minus the high from the free-flowing alcohol) in Rachel’s dayislooking out through the train windows, in particular, peering into a house as the train slows down mid-way during the commute. This house belongs to a larger-than-life couple that Rachel has never met but is fixated with. Just a few houses away from Megan and her husband Scott’s pictureperfect life is the home where Rachel used to live with her husband Tom. While he was still married to Rachel, Tom fell in love with his secretary Anna and married her subsequently.Tom now has a happy life with his current wife Anna and their little daughter in the very same house where Rachel once lived in conjugal bliss. Hawkins has managed to carve out characters that are brimming with flaws yet, one does not want to judge them because they all seem so real, so human. Once Hawkins gives us a clear view of where each character stands in the social sphere, the book picks up pace and how! Megan, the pin-up girl whose life Rachel would give anything to have as her own, goes missing. In what seems like a rather slow book until then, thanks to Rachel’s Gin and tonic spikedunsteady narration, Megan’s disappearance is the point where the element of “thrill” kicks in.Rachel firmly believes that she herself holds a clue to Megan’s disappearance but is unable to piece everything together. As she sets out to uncover the truth about Megan and give meaning to her life, Rachel learns that (let alone others around you) you should not even trust yourself. If twisted stories are your thing and you do not mind giving up food, drinks, and a social life until you have got to the very end of a good story, you will definitely enjoy this train ride with Rachel Watson! health

The Darth Wader of Food In 1994, a study at Harvard University reported that people who consumed the highest amounts of trans fats had twice the heart-attack risk of those who consumed little. Dr. Neeru Bali explains how trans fats are a metabolic poison and why one needs to check the contents label before buying any eatable from the market.

22 | TheLifestyleJournalist | www.thelifestylejournalist.com | November 2016

N Here is how you can eat healthy by substituting healthier foods for less healthy options high in trans and saturated fats: l Use safflower or olive oil instead of butter and other solid fats. l Switch from solid margarine to soft margarine. l Ask what type of fats foods are cooked in when you eat out at restaurants. l Avoid fried, packaged, and processed foods. l Replace meats with skinless chicken or fish a few days a week. l Replace whole-fat diary with lowfat or non-fat milk, yogurt, and cheese.

utritionists all over the world, till very recently, have been focusing primarily on fats and cholesterol to prevent heart disease. Right from early age, everyone was advised to cut on dietary intake of saturated fats and cholesterol. This was based on numerous epidemiological studies and clinical research which established a close relationship between circulating cholesterol and LDL cholesterol with Coronary artery and peripheral vascular diseases. We believed, rather naively, that circulating cholesterol is directly related to dietary cholesterol and saturated fats. However, newer studies have proved, beyond a reasonable doubt, that most of the circulatory cholesterol is produced in liver. Dietary fatinfluence it to about twenty percent only. That is precisely the reason why different members of family or social groups may have varied blood cholesterol levels despite having similar diet.American Nutritional Agency has also come up with new guidelines putting less emphasis on dietary fat intake. Despite this new and compelling data, there is uniformity of opinion that one specific type of fats is universally harmful and injurious to blood vessels, namely “transfats”. TransFatsare a type of partially hydrogenated oils which help food to last longer and give them extra texture and taste. Some restaurants use partially hydrogenated vegetable oil in their deep fryers because it doesnot have to be changed as oftenas other oils. Fast food joints across the world have been using transfats to increase shelf life of their eatables and to make them crispy. They are cheap and therefore widely used. In addition, fooditems which are repeatedly cooked in same oil, like samosas, kachoris, french fries etc are also rich in transfats as repeated heating of unsaturated oils produces trans fats by chemical process of hydrogenation. Transfats are also found in baked goods, most cakes, cookies, piecrust, snacks, potato chips, many types of packaged or microwave popcorns to give them flavor, fried foods-french fries, fried chicken. Nondairy coffee creamer and stick margarines also may contain partially hydrogenated oils. There is a large body of scientific data, which has shown that transfats increase bad LDL cholesterol and triglycerides and decrease good HDL cholesterol. Replacing other fats with transfats significantly increased Total/

HDL Cholesterol ratio and negatively affect lipoproteins (Apo B/Apo A ratio),both important risk factors for heart disease. Transfats are linked to increased inflammatory markers including C-Reactive protein especially in people who have lot of fat. This inflammatorystate damages the inner lining of blood vessel known as endothelium. Integrity of endothelium is extremely important to prevent onset of atherosclerosis. Endothelium is an extremely important organ and produces numerous molecules which dilate blood vessels, prevent clot formation and prevent onset of disease. Inflammatory markers are important in atherosclerotic disease activity also as it makes blocks unstable leading to unstable angina and heart attacks. We should move towards excluding transfats completely from our diets. In many Scandinavian countries, use of trans fats is completely banned. Some states in US like California have also banned its use. Other countries are in the process of doing same. American heart Association says that if trans fats are less than one per cent in a serving it may be considered free of trans fats. It is important to remember that there is no lower limit where they are safe for humans. Under intense pressure from public and regulatory bodies most of fast food chains have started using safer alternatives in their foods. Unfortunately in third world and developing countries, same companies continue to use trans fats with abandon. To make sure we are avoiding ingestion of transfats we must read labelson packaged foods and menu cards very carefully. Donot eat foods that have the words “hydrogenated” or “partially hydrogenated” on the ingredient list. Choose real butter instead of margarine, Olive oil and canola oil instead of hydrogenated vegetable oil. Try baking, steaming, grilling or broiling instead of heating same oil for cooking. Home cooked food instead of packaged meal would significantly reducetransfats intake. According to American Heart Association, we should limit our transfats intake to less than one per cent of our total daily calories intake. If you eat 2000 calories a day that translates to be about 20calories from transfats-that is less than two grams a day. Since some whole foods such as dairy products and meat contain naturally occurring transfats, the only way to stay under that two grams per day limit is to buy snack foods, baked foods, fast foods with absolutely no transfats.

weddings

Wedding day is one of the most savoured days in the life of a woman where she ought to steal the show with her‘solahshringaar’ of which ‘choodha’ (the bridal bangles) must be essentially detailed and attractive! Interestingly, gone are the days of stereotyped red choaadhas, bridal bangles now come in all patterns and designs and brides are bold enough to experiment!

Here are few of those gazillion options to choose from, which the bride can customize depending on her flavour …

Simple Punjabi Choodha A Punjabi choodha is a set of red and white bridal bangles arranged together in a particular pattern. The thickness of the white bangles is more than that of the red bangles. Even though it is traditionally worn by Punjabi brides, now brides from other cultures add them to their wedding look as a fashion trend as well. Simple is always a safe option!

38 | TheLifestyleJournalist | www.thelifestylejournalist.com | November 2016

Customized Choodhas Bangles with names are still in! Some brides prefer to add special custom-made bridal bangles to their choodha with the names of the couple engraved on them. Along with them they add bangles which can be of kundanglittering to make you sparkle on you big day.

Bridal Bangle Sets – Jaipuri Bangles Jaipuri Bangles can be added to a normal set of bridal bangles to add the ‘royal touch’ to the bridal look. A bride can wear two on each hand or one on each depending on the likes and preferences regarding the heaviness of jewellery.

Bold Gold Set Colour is not always necessary when it comes to bangles. If your dress is going to have shades of gold, or a lot of gold work on it, then it does not make sense to add colour to the bridal bangles set. Therefore, a set like this one goes best.

Green, Silver And Gold Combo In many cultures across the world and especially in India, green is considered to be an auspicious colour when it comes to weddings. You will find many brides wearing a dress with a hint of green it. So how could we miss the green combination wedding bangles?

Bengali Bridal Bangles White bangles are a part of Bengal’s traditional jewellery. They can be beautifully incorporated in the bridal bangles set. Many brides from other cultures too add this to their look just as a part of trend.

Marathi Bridal Bangles A Marathi bride traditionally wears a green and gold combination of bridal bangles. Patlya and Tode are traditional banglesmade in pure gold which are worn along with simple green glass bangles.

Kundan Bridal Bangles Kundan sets are usually in the higher price range but the best part about them is that you can always get matching sets for the neck, ears and nose.

Sparkle Bright Gone are the days when a bride would simply wear glass bangles to her wedding. Now is the time for setting trends and making a fashion statement. You can make your own style statement with a beautiful combination set like this one which has the bridal colour red with beautiful crystal bridal bangles and a thick kada.

Colourful Affair Most brides, these days pick out their wedding attire first and then based on the colour combination of the dress pick out the bridal bangles set. It can have a selected mix of few colours with gold in a particular pattern. Precisely as you want it!

Pure Minimalistic Bliss For brides who are hoping to keep it elegant, an exquisite thin jewellery piece draped around their wrists would be the best ever piece to adorn their beauty.

Gurleen Chopra In a different ‘Avtar’

Her stint in the Punjabi movie Hashar opposite Babbu Mann was much liked and ever since she has been doing a melange of roles in Telugu, Tamil, Kannada and even Bhojpuri films! Meet the vibrantGurleen Chopra who was in the limelight for her role as ‘Sita’ this year in the much sort after and the biggest RamLeela in the world staged at New Delhi. In one of the exclusive talk with TLJ, she shares her journey and talks about her forthcoming Hindi movies…. You won Miss Chandigarh title when you were merely finishing off your Senior Secondary School. How had been your journey after taking off so early? I was very young when I won it and it was indeed thrilling to get this kind of honour at such an early age. I think it really motivated me to work passionately towards my goal. My parents were reluctant at first but eventually, they became quite supportive because of my hard work and dedication towards my career. You recently acted as Sita in Delhi’s Ramleela- said to be the biggest in the world. How was your experience? Sharing the stage with 54 big stars was an experience in itself. This was the first time I was doing something live and it was outrightly different that shooting for the movies. There were 16-20 cameras capturing your every little moment and you have the responsibility of not making even a single error because there are not going to be retakes. You have to speak your dialogues perfectly and that too, in pure Hindi. I had to work hard, do more rehearsals and watched many references before going for live performance. Ultimately, I have been appreciated so much for the performance not only in India but also overseas and that is what makes it all worth it. What are the current movie projects in pipeline for you? Currently, three of my Hindi movies are going to be released soon. Ashley, Game

is a big decision and you should not haste into it before you are completely sure about it. Work and status do contribute to the happiness and contentment prevailing in you. So, one should make sure that he/she has achieved a status in life before moving in it. However, I think there is pressure always when it comes to marriage but then it is up to you, how you take it!

Over and I have recently signed a movie titled ‘Love Hackers’ with Rahul Dev. All these movies have women oriented subjects. The movie Love Hackers is based on the subject of sex trafficking and how a girl gets entrapped in sex racket and eventually emerges out of it and goes on to become an IAS officer. I am also playing a role based on Sania Mirza’s journey in one of my upcoming Telugu movies. What is your take on marriage? In film industry, there are workshops to be attended, roles to be rehearsed, assignments to be taken care of. I am very much passionate about my career. I do not think that one should give up dreams for anyone at all. I do wish my dream man to be supportive, one who can say “Baby, do what you want to do! I am with you in all your career endeavours.” But I think it

Who is the Gurleen as an ordinary girl, the one people do not know of? I am a very religious person. Face is definitely the aura of heart. Positive aura is reflected on your face. I love to engulf myself with good food and people with good thoughts. I am an introvert and a very family oriented person who is in for a peaceful daily schedule rather than a haywire partying one. Besides; gymming, meditation, yoga are few of my interests beyond acting. What is one advice you will like to give to the young generation? Be true to yourself. Concentrate and give 100% to your career. Think about what you want to achieve and get it without shifting your focus. Meditation and discipline will keep you grounded. An artist has to take care of body and face and that is not possible without proper eating and sleeping schedule. To maintain decorum is essential. If the shoot is at 9, make a point to be there at 8:45. Once you have these qualities and this kind of dedication, you are eventually going to get success sooner or later.

urniture can become a talking point in your home; or any interiors for that matter!Stylish, classy, tasteful, teakwood or royal furniture is an all-time favorite of connoisseurs who are fond of decorating homes and refurbish every now and then. Ace interior designers today face the challenge of meeting the ‘needs’ and ‘style demand’ of clients concurrently; and furniture choice could well be the most important one while designing a home or a commercial outlet..! For one, the experts opine that the kind of furniture you choose has a lot to with your personality. Taste aside, the global forecasters cite that by 2019, the furniture market is likely to reach $695 billion and the Indian trends and market are equally exciting. Several reasons have been quoted for the changing trends in the furniture industry. Rise of telecommuting is driving the demand for home cum office furniture. Digital is the future and scores of professionals have begun operating from home. Even professionals like doctors, architects, interior designers and software professionals would like to operate from home for obvious reasons. Cities have become congested, distances have increased and teleworking has become the need of hour. “We find increasing number of clients now opting for concepts like the ‘invisible beds’ which serve the purpose of sofas during the day time and change the look of room entirely into a living room and then convert into very usable beds during the night time,” says UmeshGhai, Managing Director of Paradise Decorators, a leading interiors and wooden flooring firm based in North India. Second, the multifunctional and versatile furniture is gaining popularity due to space restrictions. The numbers of single and two person households have been on a surge and the demand for portable furniture is on hike. So consumers look for furniture that is multipurpose, foldable and technology driven, particularly when it comes to compact spaces. “Foldable furniture has multiple benefits and perfectly serves the purpose of shorter and compact spaces. We design great classy furniture from the best quality wood but most of it is foldable,” says Jeet Singh, Owner of Delhi based Guram & Sons, who deal in foldable furniture. As the economy has grown, more consumers are willing to buy luxury items for their living and work environments. A major reason of changing

44 | TheLifestyleJournalist | www.thelifestylejournalist.com | November 2016

trends! Credible world agencies have projected last year that the global luxury furniture market is expected to grow at a compound annual gross rate of 4 percent between the years 2015-2019. In the world market, Europe has the largest market for luxury furniture but even developing countries like China and India are not far behind. “Clients with taste and flair for good furniture know exactly what they are looking for. We get several clients who specially demand gold and silver leafing furniture. We manufacture customized high-end luxury furniture items while keeping in view the budgets,” adds VarunKaher, Owner of Holzer- the Furniture Boutique. A latest trend is to go green! Furniture vendors have chosen to go green all over the globe. Many manufacturers and vendors are developing eco-friendly furniture. The trend is naturally driven by environmental concerns such as deforestation. Even though the Green or eco-friendly furniture is more expensive, the demand is rising. And this demand is enough to provoke manufactures and companies to offer these products. Interior designers and architects too have felt the need to capture the pulse of the clients and be nice to the environment at the same time. An undisputed fact remains that there is always a market for old classic style furniture which has antique looks and is evergreen. “Trends in furniture industry keep changing but antique style of crafting furniture never goes out of fashion. We are now experimenting with the blend of both antique and modern using colours like white, green and others in the antique style itself and the response is phenomenal,” cites Punita Singh, a furniture designer who owns the brand Wood Wonderz. “We make designer furniture in teak wood in replicas of oriental and victorian designs and also take orders for customised furniture. There is nothing to beat the look of teak wood textures, it fascinates by the freshness of its natural design and its lasting quality. We have chosen the designs and added our own ingredients in these for personal touch. Today’s life style demands not only functional but also beautifully designed furniture to soothe our home environment. Well-made furniture never goes out of style, and our creations are a classic example,” says PushapSidhu, owner of a highend luxury brand of furniture in Patiala that serves to niche clientele.

Classic and Contemporary Interiors

O

It is not the choice of furniture alone but the total concept which matters when it comes to classy concepts... Ambica Joshi writes on stylish, contemporary interiors and guides how to cherish the timelessness of a marvelous intermingling of classic and modern…..

ur admiration for the antique and the utility of the contemporary has evolved into the perfect blend of the classic and contemporary style of furniture. It is said “live your life” king size and what a better way to live it than “owning” a furniture which make you feel so. Yes, we are talking about the old traditional vintage furniture which gives your space a touch of royalty and creates a charmingly rustic and warm ambience. If one of your design resolutions this year was to beat up your furniture styles, remember that mixing and matching modern pieces with traditional antiques can be an intimidating task for even the most seasoned designer or decorator. Then why try to mix and match modern pieces with their design counterparts, antiques? Because when done right, combining contemporary furniture and accessories with antiques, creates authentic, multi-layered and charismatic spaces. A luxurious extravagance coupled with mélange of memories which exudes a regal look and adds opulence to the space. The use of assortment of rare furniture pieces and antiques has an ethnic influence and adds to the glamour quotient which renders a sumptuous feeling. For example, the old traditional dining table not only adds luxury but also transforms the mood of the room hence making the dining experience more enjoyable. Few objects from the old traditional artifacts can equal the magnificence and dramatize the whole traditional vintage look. The splendor of these timeless pieces enhances the impact of the entire décor. However, you cannot go overboard with traditional furniture alone. The current trend is of fusing the classic and contemporary styles where these two opposing modes in décor and design blend seamlessly and look versatile .The contrast with the modern

furniture adds more appeal, comfort and gives a soft look to the interiors by keeping the aesthetic intact. The modern furniture adds the zing, an element of sophistication lending a refreshing look with a modern edge. Remember, you should always design a space according to what you truly love. That being said, there are a few steps you can take to make things easier on yourself when tackling a project like trying to infuse old and new in one room. In a perfect world, no one would have to choose between modern or antique, and the two could live happily- ever- after in a harmonious balance. Unfortunately, more often than not the attempt to mix the two design styles leave your space looking more like a bohemian college dorm than a stylish and chic eclectic combination. This integrated look make the interiors more alive. For example, using a modern sofa along with old traditional chairs balances well and nothing looks over. The combination of old and modern gives an appeal of serenity. This infused decor celebrates the glory of past and modernity where every line, every material, every corner is echoing with something hence creating a style statement for your home and eventually for your personal taste. It is all about what feels right for you, but you can have an easier time if you sit down before you design and decide whether you want to really showcase antique pieces, or it would rather be a museum of the modern. Take note of what kind of material your favorite furniture is made of, if they have curvy lines or straight ones and what colors and textures they feature. Keep this list with you when you shop and only purchase things that fit your design plan (unless of course you see something you just cannot live without!) Jigmat Couture

One may find the buzz around the Paris fashion weekand, closer home; the amazon fashion week quite enticing we now transport you to a different locale! In the heart of Ladhak is ‘Jigmat Couture’a brand that takes pride in working on the finer nuances of the Ladakhi wool; itsfineness, the splendid texture and longer fibre length to bring out high end stylish and luxury products

ool- has been recognized as a fundamental component of Ladakhi culture… not just because of the rich availability but more so because the people of this region have a natural inclination towards spinning and weaving. With the objective of celebrating this ancestral legacy, Jigmat Couture- a brand set up in the heart of Leh- advocated traditional methods of providing high

quality, tradition and sustainability exquisite products developed from the finest textiles and varied range of wools, especially hand woven and spun by local artisans of Ladakh. The brand and boutique was set up in 2010 by the duo Jigmat Norbu and Jigmat Wangmo, following two years of research on possibilities of woollen textile in traditional weave as marketable product. The basic objective- quote these phenomenal designers- was to explore possibilities and to create

valuable products for luxury market in this part of the country. Here is a conversation with TLJ team…. When did it all begin? Tell us about your team! Having been based in Delhi for quite some time, we were aware about the trade and technical know-how of the business. That is when we decided to come back. Initially it was not easy. We spent quite lot of time in understanding domestic market and our own loom

If you are a fashion enthusiast, you can visit their studio in Leh, and can cherish their fabrics and textiles collection with cup of green tea. and textile since this subject was not explored or there was no expert to consult regarding this craft. The biggest challenge was to develop innovative marketable product and above all research and development has to be on continuous base. After working with few artisans to create local woollen textile (snam-bu), we eventually came out with beautifully textured, warm and durable products and the outcome was beyond expectation. Though textile weaving isnot new to Ladakh but it had been limited with only two variations in weave amounting to just two designs. Now we are very proud and happy that our R&D isso strong that we have come up with hundreds of design and it is on continuation. We have a team of people in spinning, weaving, designing, tailoring and sales. How did the idea of woollen textile in traditional weave (as marketable product!) strike you? While studying in fashion industry, we both had the idea that there is a

potential market for this kind of a textile. But for that, one has to innovate and work hard on the design elements for this textile. Traditionally, Ladakhi textile (snam bu) is woven with lambs or sheep wool only and single color is dyed in shades of red only. However, now we have woven this textile with yak wool, camel wool, cashmere and merino wool and further dying it with various natural dyes beside varieties of stripes, checks, herringbone, birds eye to name a few. And we are doing it all with traditional loom and in traditional way, hundred percent hand-woven. What kind of traditional values continue to inspire you? And how are you preserving the tradition through your stylish couture? We are blessed to be born in this part of the world with rich culture, art, craft, landscape, costume, food everything. the preserving and reviving our tradition in many ways. InLadakh, there used to be atleast one weaver in every village but now you hardly find any weaver. If we put a break in continuation of any craft, soon it diminishes away dying a slow death. Our objective is not only to practice this craft but at same time, to document it for futurereference. We are planning to come up with textile resource center and textile museum. By the end of this season, our ‘textile

museum of Ladakh’ will be ready for public. This is one of a kind museum in entire Himalaya. One can not only enjoy exhibited artefacts but can get involved in process of textile weaving, study, exhibiting one’s own creation. What kind of clients do you find walking into your store? Tell us about your most cherished experience so far. We have our pret line (ready to wear) and accessories made with pure cashmere for regular customers with very reasonable price. So far, we have dressed many royalties, celebrity from film to politics and so on. We have been featured in Lakme Fashion Week, Mumbai, by Marg publications. It was definitely a great experience to showcase our creation at this prestigious platform. Since we

show cased ladakhi costumes, we got appreciation and compliments from everyone present there. You are known for very high quality of your products. How do you succeed in creating such quality every time? Ladakh lies embedded in the mountains of Karakoram in the north-west, the Himalaya in the south-west and the Trans Himalaya at its core. The region is rich in livestock such as yak, goat, sheep and camel from which some of the finest and exquisite quality of wool and pashmina are extracted. High end quality of our products comes from few factors like 100% hand spun and woven, assured purity, made by local people. We try to keep our products organic and authentic.

Men’s Fashion

SECRET OF FRAGRANCES Do you have a hot date? Or are you looking to catch ‘her’ attention at a club outing? Then you got to smell and look right. Having a nice and pleasant smell may leave a lasting memory Surbhi Sehgal lists top picks of essential autumn fragrances that every man should own

Serge Lutens’ Borneo 1834 Cologne This is considered as one of the best colognes for men. It began as a perfume that suited both men and women. It has a warm and spicy scent that comes from cardamom, patchouli, French labdanum, cocoa, white flowers, and galbanum. It is the combination of patchouli and cocoa that makes this scent interesting. Due to these two ingredients, there is a pleasant confusion that satisfies the senses.

Eau de Vert Eau de Parfum Spray by Miller Harris Eau de Vart is an energizing unisex scent as it opens with citrus notes. It develops into a mature character thanks to the marjoram and geranium. Its freshness can suit both men and women but is more suited to men because of its sharp scent. As it develops, there is a sweet musk that reveals itself.

62 | TheLifestyleJournalist | www.thelifestylejournalist.com | November 2016

Straight to Heaven by Kilian Straight to Heaven is one of the most popular scents for men and that might be because of rum. It is a woody and spicy fragrance mixed in with a bit of musk, jasmine, patchouli, Virginia cedar, amber, nutmeg, vanilla, and of course, rum!.This scent is known for reminding people of the warmth of the tropics.

5.L’eau Serge Lutens Ambre Topkapi Ambre Topkapi is one of the most expensive cologne for men. The master perfumer behind this is Pierre Bourdon and he decided to mix in strong spices like bergamot, cardamom, cinnamon, ginger and nutmeg with grapefruit, pineapple, and lavender. There is no wonder this fragrance is woody, spicy and fresh!

This is a perfume that makes men smell fresh and crisp. Its scent reminds one of freshly pressed linens or a white soap bar fresh out of its box. Its scent has hints of citrus mixed with magnolia, lily of the valley, rose, and amber. The aldehyde is a great addition to this scent, too. When it comes to smelling simple, fresh, and clean, this one is a great choice.

Gold and metallic gold interiors at wedding venue when used tastefully in the decor actually makes the concept look all royal and yet, easy on the eye and subtle. Replace the bare edison bulbs with pendant lights, both vintage and modern chandeliers and ornate candelabras to cast a soft glow. If you are more of a playful bride or groom, no matter the theme, walk in for fun photo-booths and selfie stations – they are definitely in.

The elegant floral chic gold white laser cut formal wedding card or a rustic country mason jar with lights and lace with glitter pocket, can be customized with couple accessories, ribbons and beautiful figurines to add a tinge of spark to inviting the ones whom you wish to witness your adventure ride with you.

ove is the greatest adventure and so is wedding! As with many trends that first see the light, they are characteristically dotted at multiple places before they are given a makeover or die a quiet death. But some unusual and much-loved trends are unmoving and strong while the newer ones make their way for 2017! As the wedding season approaches; all the vibranttrends open their wings to imagination and fly like a free bird. Not just ideas and investments, weddings are plagued with an extensive range of demands about the many ‘dreams’. It is time when the Pinterest becomes the most visited and the wedding magazines help you put together your D-Day! Once you are done with the booking of the venue of a local or a destination wedding, the decor is what needs to stand out. 2017 is bringing in the metallic glitter everywhere. Gold and metallic gold when used tastefully in wedding décor actually makes the wedding venue look all royal and yet, easy on the eye and subtle. It makes the ceremony go dreamy, lifting the ambience to a romantic mood. The lighting gives the guests an intimate environment. Replace the bare edison bulbs with pendant lights, both vintage and modern chandeliers and ornate candelabras to cast a soft glow. Décor that gels perfectly with breezy, rustic centrepieces or tall romantic candlelights makes it all formal, if you want that so. Even while the accurate blend of style and unfussiness continue to be the keystone of extraordinary wedding floral arrangements, you can add wild look of freshly picked blooms, spiky flowers or fruiting vines. If you are in a rush to recreate your version of a royal wedding, then the secret tip is- the more the merrier. An assortment of international artists

looks help to dazzle up your most special days. Interactive sessions and the ‘no parking on the dance floor’ signs grab more attention from your guests. It is not about big crowds anymore. The dream wedding is not about splashing your money on people who are not part of your close circle. Have just those who truly matter around you. An exotic touch to all wedding packaging like a magnificently carved wooden chest or an exquisite mosaic box or personalized wedding favors is as important. Just that they look special, effortful and they don’t need to cost you the earth and leave your guests gushing with happiness and gratitude. Try and include a satchel of a scent in all, to keep everything fresh and lively. It is interesting to see how the couples are more than eager to smash away from the ingredients that make up the ‘perfect Indian Wedding’ and more than resolute to have things their way now-a-days! While the pre-weddings have played their important role in making the couples get comfortable with each other before their big day, the post weddings are trending! The story must not end at the reception but fairy tales must be taken forward. Photographs have a big say in your story. The story that tells the vital moving moments, the splendour and the oomph of the people, the magnificence of the place, all in just few minutes. Grab few copies and send over to your guests. Make them relive your dream wedding! Love is fed by the imagination, they say. Get it all out! (Isha Kakaria is the Owner ofTanusiyaa Event and Wedding Services)

Behind all the Glitz & Glamour C

Red carpet, shutterbugs, fan following, fame, wealth, they want it served all‌..at once....in one palate! The so called ‘Show Biz’ attracts innumerable contenders to become famous. Pooja Gosain takes a sneak peek inside the intricacy of the fashion and film industry.. beyond the shutterbugs and looks at the other side of the world of glitz and glamour....to help you cope up with the social media pressure of a celebrity lifestyle!

elebrities have always been trend setters and trend makers. Most of the choices we make are inspired by projected preferences of our favourite celebrity-in one way or the other! With the popularity of

social media paradigm, our private lives have become public too. Be it our holidaying trips or day to day photographs of usual affairs, everything is up on the public portals where the attempt is to ape and project a celebrity lifestyle. It could

be a way to satiate our need of being important or the means by which one believes people will remember them. But beyond the celebrated lifestyles (which we enthusiastically try to mimic!), there is another side which needs to be pondered upon..

Media Pressure churns up one’s individuality The celebrities are constantly in limelight and have the pressure to maintain their celebrity character all the time which deprives them of having a personal space. Imagine the horror of being under the scanner most of the time and trying to maintain and project an aura of perfection! Does not it begin to appear as a cage where you are being watched all the time? Many celebrities are in limelight more for their personal lives than their respective works. We have seen how that can take toll upon the happy lives of our favourite celebrities as in case of the Ranbir Kapoor’s relationship with Katrina Kaif where in a recent interview, he alleged that “It was really punctured by a lot of things – by baseless rumours and reports and perceptions and points-of-view.”

Depression It was Deepika Padukone who broke the stigma engulfing the topic of depression for the first time on Indian television shedding light on how the alienation can take a toll upon the celebrities even despite the glamour of showbiz. At 36%, India has the highest rate of depression anywhere on the globe. There is need for an initiative to create awareness about anxiety and depression, and help people with it, particularly in the showbiz world where the competition to excel usually alienate you confining you within the limits of inescapable solitary confinement mentally and emotionally.

Falling prey to Addiction The blinding lights of fame make you vulnerable. As we have all seen throughout the years, many celebrities and big name stars like Amy Winehouse, Whitney Houston tragically go hand in hand with addiction. Addiction is a serious, chronic and debilitating illness that is difficult to treat once you fall in the net. Even Ranbir Kapoor openly admitted to resorting to drugs during shooting of his movie ‘Rockstar’ because of the workload. The high-profile celebrities, stars turn to drugs and alcohols to manage the overwhelming pressure. The sad and tragic relationship some celebrities develop with drugs and alcohol needs to be talked about openly to evade the destructive impending effects.

Fame is an addictive drug Fame changes a person’s life forever, and is felt more as an impact or “overnight” experience, rather than a gradual transition. And when the overnight experience is over, that is the time when it becomes hard for celebrities to handle the insecurity of being secluded. This is the time when they need the support of family and friends but unfortunately in many cases, this support fails to come to the rescue. The actor cum model Parveen Babi, model Geetanjali Nagpal and many more are witness to the downfall caused by succumbing under this pressure.
