What is Diversity?

‘The concept of diversity encompasses acceptance and respect.
It means understanding that each individual is unique,
and recognizing our individual differences. These can be along
the dimensions of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, age, physical abilities, religious beliefs,
political beliefs, or other ideologies. It is the exploration
of these differences in a safe, positive, and nurturing environment.
It is about understanding each other and moving beyond
simple tolerance to embracing and celebrating the
rich dimensions of diversity contained within each individual.’

Documentaries and programmes on Diversity:

Models of Diversity Documentary, Models with a Disability in the Fashion and beauty Industry – 2013

All Walks Beyond the Catwalk works with influential catwalk designers, fashion students and industry creative to challenge the fashion industry’s dependence on unrealistic and unachievable body and beauty ideals. They are active in three ways: Education, Advocacy and Consumer and Trade facing press campaigns. They educate and celebrate people about diversity in the industry and challenge the obsessiveness on one body ideal, using press campaigns that feature a wide range of sizes, ages and skin tones.

This documentary shows an insight in to some amputees lives and how they have got in to modeling. It talks about the ideals of the fashion industry through the times from Marilyn Monroe’s perfect ideal, to the 60’s where skin and bone was the ideal. It explains that there is an unfair misrepresentation of disability within the industry and that ‘Fashion industry is a fantasy based industry, it sells a dream.’ It highlighted the Debenhams Disability campaign, where it uses plus sized models and paralympian’s.

Grayson Perry – Who Are You? This documentary explores our personal meaning and modern identity through Grayson Perry’s art. It looks at four modern individuals and Perry creates a self-portrait of them to exhibit in the national portrait gallery. It is a very interesting concept.

Photo Shoot Planning Test Shots Distortion through glass - Here I took photos through glasses of water. I did this as I thought it would be an interesting way to relate to plastic surgery as it shows distortion and manipulation.

Group Diversity Studio Photo Shoot For the studio photo shoot we took head shots and profile pictures of each other and then we stood back to back to highlight the difference in our face shapes. We then put more make up on to show how easy it is to alter your appearance with out surgery. Then we took started to take all the make up off and took finla photos with a bare face to show the difference.

Distortion of the face

Photo Edits For my final photos I decided that the best and most interesting effect to show distortion would be through water. I took these photos of Abby under water in the bath. I took photos of her under water with her eyes shut and open and with the water rippling to show the distortion. I then drew plastic surgery lines on her face and took more photos of her underwater. I then took pictures of her in the shower to get a different water effect.

Hre the model is fully submerged. I like the effect of this photo as the water is rippling to create a slight distorted effect, so you cant see her face clearly. Her eyes are open which makes the image more striking. It shows the distortion that water can create.

Here her face is not clear, however you can make out the outline of her face. The water makes her lose her individuality relating to plastic surgery as when you go under the knife you can lose your uniqueness and individuality.

In this photo she is just about to surface the water, so I was able to capture the movement of the water as she was breathing out to come up. This makes her face look very thin with a pointy chin. I edited this photo by increasing the contrast and brightness . I did this becasue i wanted to create harsh lighting for a hospital effect to relate the plastic surgery.

The model was standing just behind the water, so I was able to capture the water droplets.

The model is standing directly under the water in this photo, smudging the plastic surgery lines on her face. However her eyes are open and I like how the flow of water distorts her left eye slightly. I think the image also shows vulnerablity due to the white background and bare shoulders. This highlights how vulnerable you are when you go under the knife.

I find this photo particularly interesting as when I inverted the colours, the plastic surgery lines on her face become much more brighter and noticeable. Also near her eye the water has gone a dark brown/red colour, which could represent the dark side of plastic surgery as it can represent blood or the chemicals that are injected in to your face when you get fillers ect.

Plastic Surgery Distortion

The Facts: According to a BBC Report - Feb 2014

There has been a dramatic increase in the popularity of surgery in the UK according to the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons. According to a BBC news report in Feb 2014, the number of nose jobs, face lifts and breast implant ops have risen to more than 10% last year. The biggest increase was in liposuction which increased by 41%. Breast enhancements were the most popular in women, while nose jobs were the cosmetic surgery of choice in men. The top 10 procedures were:

Here I have taken facial features from our group diveristy photo shoot and from my other photographs and merged them together to create a distorted effect. Trying to emphasise the effects of plastic surgery for example, fillers.

Breast augmentation up 13% to 11,135 Eyelid surgery up 14% to 7,808 Face and neck lifts up 13% to 6,380 Breast reduction up 12.5% to 5,476 Nose jobs up 17% to 4,878 Liposuction up 41% to 4,326 Tummy tucks up 16% to 3,466 Fat transfer operations up 14.5% to 3,302 Brow lifts up 17% to 2,138 Ear corrections up 14% to 1,213

Documentaries & Programmes: Real Life Ukrainian Barbie She has stated that she has had breast implants, but that the rest of her body is completely natural and slender due to daily gym workouts and a special diet. The Real Life Barbies

This is about a real life Barbie who lives in Yorkshire, she has not had any cosmetic surgeries, she uses a lot of make-up and special eye enlarging contact lenses to create a more doll and Barbie like effect. She is inspired from Barbie and Japanese dolls. The Mother Addicted to Plastic Surgery – Where Are They Now? – Oprah Winfrey Network This short programme explores the life of Jenny Lee who became addicted to plastic surgeries. By the time she was 28 she had already had 26 surgeries. Jenny has not been able to beat her addiction and continues to have surgeries. This shows how dangerous plastic surgery can be as who decides what is perfect? Extreme Plastic Surgery This programme was about a Justin Jedlica who is known as the human Ken doll. He has undergone over 100 plastic surgeries to ‘perfect’ his body. He has had ab, peck, tricep and bicep implants as well as many more. When faced with the obvious question, why not work out instead? He answered ‘That’s not fabulous or glamorous.’ He sees his surgeries as metamorphosing himself and the stranger the surgery the better. His obsessive surgeries have cost him over $100,000. Also in this programme was a woman who has constantly been enlarging her breasts. This restricts her lifestyle dramatically, she can’t run, or sleep on her back as she feels like she is suffocating. She has the weight of two bowling balls on her chest and her rib cage has bent from the strain. Yet she is actively trying to find a surgeon who will agree to enlarge her breasts further.

Going under the knife? Think again.....

Body Worlds vital I went to see the Body Worlds Vital Exhibition of real Human Bodies. It is an exhibition of the human body showing the diversity, complexity, beauty and potential. It also shows specimens, organs and body slices which have been willed by donors. The bodies have been preserved through a process of plastination which was invented by Dr. Gunther von Hagens. I found the exhibition to be extremely interesting. I went to see it so I could see the human body in different forms, and see it stripped back.

Here are drawings that I have done from found imagery

Design Developments

Development Work

For my colour pallette I looked at my images from my photoshoot. I wanted to have soft, calming colours with some darker shades.

When developing my sihouettes, I started by taking inspirtion from my photoshoot, with the rippling water effects. I used ink to quickly draw out lose outlines. I like this effectas it creates an interesting silhouette. I then went on to draw some outlines, with out focusing on any particular features, so I could get an idea of what kind of shapes I was wanting to create.

I started to look at facial features to develop my silhouetter further, and see which drawing style I liked and that would fit best with my work. As I decided to do lingerie I wanted a natural look which was very feminine.

I then started to develop sihouettes digitally using Illustrator. I started to draw out body outlines and slighlty define the facial features and hair. I also tried drawing out a face, scanning it in and the colouring over it digitally, and I thought this worked well. For my final silhouette, I wanted a natural, feminine look with a soft pose. I wanted this because I looked at plastic surgery, in particular the bad side of plastic surgery and how it can distort and manipulate the body, so I thought a natural looking silhouette that wasnt super skinny. I wanted a natural, healthy looking silhouette to celebrate diversity of the body.

I used two different fabrics when moulaging on the stand. I twisted and manipulated the fabrics in to different shapes, wrapping it round the torso, to give myself design inspiration for designing underwear.

Patterns

I have taken lips from my images and put them together to create a feminine flowery pattern.

Here I have created a flower like pattern by using the face from my images

This is a print of the water from my photography

Fabrics

Here I combined two fabrics together.

Pleated fabric

I have created a slightly rouched effect by sticthing wavy lines

Lace

I sewed little knots here to create a slighlty bobbled effect

Here are some of my initial design developments which I drew in pencil and then took them in to illustrator to develop them further. When desiging the lingerie I wanted to link to plastic surgery by using lots of stitching detail and ribbing. By designing lingerie it relates to manipulation as I have designed different types of lingerie that is flattering for the body.

A delicate collection of lingerie that uses soft colour tones and feminine patterns. The lingerie collection is designed to flatter and embrace the female figure in every way.
