CALICO CENTRE CIRCUS ARTS FACILITY Toronto, Canada Area - 3500 m2

ASC 301 Design Studio | Semester 3 Supervised by: Terri Peters Software Used - AutoCAD, Rhino 3D, Enscape, Photoshop, Indesign

Located within downtown Toronto, Ontario, The Calico Center acts as a circus arts sports facility that offers both youth and adults an opportunity to participate in a creative active lifestyle. This sports facility offers a spacious trapeze hall, a well-equipped strength training facility, and a dance room. The design is organized to circulate around the different demographic of users and their experience of each space. Additionally, there is a designated space for a rooftop garden and greenhouse which promote the idea of connection and integration of this design into the community that surrounds it.

CALICO CENTRE | Fall 2021

SITE CONTEXT 81 Bond Street is located at the intersection of Bond and Dundas street. Toronto Eaton Centre and Yonge Dundas Square are located on the west side of the site along Dundas. Furthermore, there is a bus stop east of the site which gives opportunities for entrances along the north and west facades. St. Michael’s choir school is located south of the site which gives the chance to collaborate with the school in terms of volunteering and the opportunity to promote an additional physical activity. The Lane way next to the site allows for possible access to the loading bay area

BUILDING ZONING ANALYSIS

SITE CIRCULATION ANALYSIS

Through further analysis of the site surroundings, it is clear that majority of the buildings on the west are commercial buildings with the east side having more residential buildings.

In response to the surrounding conditions, my design includes 3 entry points located around the north and west facade with the loading bay located along the lane way tucked away from the busy street.

Addition of Perforation

Use of different levels of transparency to promote circus arts and still maintain a sense of privacy to draw attention to the main focus of my design, the trapeze hall. Ceramic printed glasses is used around the ground level to decorate the main viewing space while using translucent and masharbiya patterns for the double skin to allow silhouettes of people using the space to act as a living art piece. The perforated screen would allow for light to filter through and create patterns on the floor of the main space to act as spotlights for performers.

CIRCULATION DIAGRAM

SUSTAINABLE DIAGRAM

Gives a general idea of how users of the space might move between the different levels through both the main circulation spine and through the secondary back circulation.

Including a green roof as a perforated surface and a rain catchers along the sawtooth roof to water the rooftop garden on the third or roof level. Additionally, by using materials such as reclaimed steel and cross-laminated timber for the primary structural material.

B - B’ SECTION

The sections of my design give a better sense of the hierarchy of the space and how light might enter and focus build on this idea. The significant height of the main space to accommodate for any activity that might occur within this space. Furthermore, the perspective section also gives a better understanding of the spatial quality of the main trapeze hall and circulation spine. It also shows the amount of glazing this space includes and the number of spaces that people can view this space from.

MELLOW PARK SKATEPARK

Toronto, Canada Area - 3560 m2

ASC 301 Design Studio | Semester 3 Supervised by: Terri Peters Software Used - AutoCAD, Rhino 3D, Enscape, Photoshop, Indesign

Mellow Park is a kid-friendly skate park designed to promote the development of youth within a local community through the use of strategically placed obstacles and use of greenery. The park itself expresses the idea of transition through different zones through the use of different hierarchies of spaces. The surrounding site and community are a significant inspiration for the design as the skatepark is modeled as an extension of an existing chain of parks. This creates an opportunity to take aspects of the natural environment while simultaneously considering the built environment.

MELLOW PARK | Fall 2021

SITE CONTEXT

The site sits at the intersection of Esplanade and Lower Jarvis Street with majority of the structures around the site being residential with the exception of St. Lawrence Market and some local shops around the area. The site is also in conjunction with a row of several parks which inspired a more green and welcoming design to fit within the surrounding area.

BEIRUT GREENER TOMORROW RESIDENCE AND OFFICE BUILDING Beirut, Lebanon Area - 6700 m2

Dar[e] Competition | Summer 2021 Colleagues: Kurt Mui and Hanzen Woo Software Used - AutoCAD, Rhino 3D, Revit, Enscape, Photoshop, Indesign

Beirut’s Greener Tomorrow is a competition proposal that aims to make a commentary on sustainable development and ideas. This mixed-use building proposes several ideas to provide maximum users’ comfort while using minimum energy and natural resources. The occupants initially enter a vast double high space that has several local commercial shops integrated within the design. This experience is exaggerated through the use of floor-to-ceiling glazing that blur the separation between the indoor commercial zone at the common outdoor courtyard. The building has gathering and informal spaces that aim to bring the local community within this design.

SITE PLAN

Through investigating the site, locations that have significant relationship with the given site has been pin-pointed on the site plan. As understood that the area is limited from the east by the Beirut river, from the north and west by the port, and is separated from the nearest urban hub of Mar-Mikhael by a high speed 2x4 lanes highway.

SUSTAINABLE DESIGN CONCEPT SMART GLAZING TECHNOLOGY

Having smart glazing technology such as thermo chromic material integrated within the windows allows the material to change properties as a function of temperature. This can reduce excessive heat gain within our structure. Sun screening technology within active window designs can block majority of sun’s energy as well.

MASS TIMBER CONSTRUCTION

Glued Laminated wood is a structural material that is manufactured by creating layers of individual wood segments and industrial adhesives. The wood is durable and moisture resistant allowing it to sustainably thrive in the humid climate of Beirut.

SOLAR PANELLED FACADE

We included a solar panel façade as it can provide additional energy towards the public spaces. The panels are located around the structure to capture as much energy through out a day cycle and reduce the overall carbon footprint generated by our building.

SECTIONS

SECTION A-A

25

GREEN ROOF SYSTEM

Having a green roof provides a lot of benefits, including: reduce urban heat island and energy use, manage storm water runoff, reduce pollutants that enter waterways, improve air quality, offers a green view and amenity, provide opportunities for habitat and enhance biodiversity.

VERTICAL GREENING

The Vertical Greening System provides social and economical benefits to the building. It put to use rainwater collected from the roof, helps manage storm water runoff, provides energy savings, materials protection at building scale, heat management and offers some green elements and vegetations to the aesthetic contribution.

HEMP CONCRETE

Hemp is a plant from which CBD oil is extracted, and a way to repurpose tens of thousands of the wasted acres of hemp. By using hempcrete instead of concrete, it does not just helps keeping construction waste out of landfills, it also helps achieving carbon-negative as 2.5 acres of hemp can absorb more than 22 tons of atmospheric carbon dioxide and can encapsulate greenhouse gases as they cure.

RENDERINGS

The render’s provide us with understanding of how materials are integrated within each space, such as the timber wood and concrete on the lobby area. Relationship of architecture and greenery is also demonstrated through the cafe spaces and the exterior of the building. Through renderings, it provides us with the ability to understand how natural lighting enter the spaces, and also how people would be occupying the spaces.

THE JOURNEY STORYTELLING FACILITY Venice, Italy Area - 410 m2

ASC 201 Design Studio | Semester 2 Supervised by: Albert Smith Software Used - AutoCAD, Rhino 3D, Enscape, Photoshop, Illustrator, Indesign

Located next to the Gaggiandre port in Venice, Italy, The Journey is a unique storytelling facility designed to promote learning within the local community whilst including tourists. Unlike traditional learning facilities, The Journey offers occupants the opportunity to experience Venice’s culture through local residents and storytellers within the community. The facility is organized in a manner where the storytelling space is the focal point of the design with the other spaces acting as a secondary space that surrounds this point.

The Journey | Winter 2021

ASSEMBLAGE Initial concepts of the storytelling facility derived from an abstract model that was meant to define a connection with Venice’s culture and express a story within Venice through the eyes of a local. The model itself symbolizes the hidden beauty within distressing situations that can be uncovered through self-reflecting. MOVIE SCENES

DESIGN CONCEPT Expanded on previous ideas to design an abstract design concept of a facility for tourists and locals to occupy and reside in. Within this iteration, several inspirational points were taken from the assemblage and story to create this communal space. Each space is organized by the sequence of ascending to a higher point in the story.
