The goal of the COO is to secure the functionality of the business to drive extensive and sustainable growth. Last December 11, 2017, the Abiva Management announced the appointment of Mr. Louie Gerard G. Abiva (known to us as Sir Luigi), as the Chief Operating Officer (COO) of the company. Prior to his appointment as COO, Sir Luigi has been APHI’s Vice-President for several years. He was also assigned during the early part of his career in Abiva as a Sales and Service Consultant (SSC) in Metro Manila and Luzon. Sir Luigi oversees the day- to-day management of Hiyas Press also.
With his new appointment, Sir Luigi will now take on a more active role as member of the Abiva Publishing House Inc’s. Management Team to assist the President by performing day-to-day and hands-on management of the operational aspects of the company. We were able to sit down with Sir Luigi for some Q&A and here are some of his thoughts:
At what point did you consider yourself a success?
Probably this year as Hiyas Press turned 50. Since I started to run the company, our growth has gone up three fold. Hiyas has fully paid up its loan and I am proud to say we are now debt-free. Hiyas is fast becoming one of the most modern printing companies because of our newly acquired state-of-the-art printing machines.
What are your success habits?
I read! Most of the books that Hiyas prints are college books on business, accounting, and finance. What I do is pull out copies of those books and read them and try to apply the management principles in the work place.
How would you describe your typical daily tasks? How do you prioritize?
For now, I’m running two companies. In the morning, I start with Hiyas to get quick feedback from the staff and check on the press production. In Abiva, my priority is Sales and Accounting and partly Marketing. Major changes will happen in these three departments in terms of deliverables and efficiency.
As the new COO of Abiva, what are your goals for the company?
I’m trying to look at and study the problems of the company and focus more on the internal problems. Once everything is stable internally, I will look into the external concerns and problems. I am aiming for a steady and stable growth in the next two years for Abiva.
What are you most passionate about as COO of Abiva?
It’s a family business so I want this to succeed for the next Abiva generation. Eventually, we will all retire. I want the fourth Abiva generation to care for and nurture the business further.
Three words that would best describe you? Fun! Challenged! Chill!
What makes you mad/angry?
I seldom get angry. If I do get angry, I keep it to myself and try to control my temper.
What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced so far?
Probably the employees’ acceptance. The employees think the changes that we will do will have a negative impact on them. I want them to know that all that we will be doing is for the benefit of the company and the employees.
What advice would you give for the young members of the workforce? Work hard! Play hard!
Technology has become strongly fundamental especially in the education sector as evidenced by the recently concluded EduTECH 2019 exhibition which made its run from February 20 to 21, 2019 at the SMX Convention Center in Pasay City. This is our first time to participate in EduTECH. A lot of participating companies, including Abiva, have enthralled the exhibition showcasing their educational and technological products. They aim to help the Filipino educators make education more relevant in the 21st century. Abiva featured its learning management system MyEDGE and showcase our new product offering, the MyEDGE smarter classroom.
The 77th CEAP National Convention was held at the SMX Convention Center, Pasay City, last October 2 to 5, 2018 with the theme “Sanctification: From Brokenness to Blessedness”. It gathered around 3,000 delegates representing the 1,350 CEAP member schools all over the country. In the words of CEAP President Father Joel Tabora in these troubled and challenging times, Catholic schools in the country are faced with difficult questions about what is to be a Catholic school. For Catholic schools, the end goal is not just to become excellent schools but also to be contributors to the mission of the Church. Catholic schools are called upon to engage in the proper formation of the person, to put into practice and cultivate a culture of dialogue, and to provide an education that generates hope. Abiva was one of the major sponsors for this event. The Abiva Sales Team was in full force to extend public relations to our Catholic schools clients. We also hosted a luncheon for selected guests and raffled off five (5) premium prizes during the closing ceremony. The CEAP 2019 National Convention will be held in Iloilo City.

acclaimed book “Noli Me Tangere”. Our booth was one of the most photographed booths in the MIBF. Imagine sitting beside Jose Rizal and having your photo taken with him in his casual attire!
Held at the SMX Convention Center from September 12 to 16, 2018, Abiva booth visitors enjoyed our Everything 30 booksale, #SubjectHugot contest, spin to win roulette for teachers in celebration of the Teachers’ Month, and coloring activity for kids. Nowadays,
having an active lifestyle is almost everyone’s goal. With immediate and long term benefits in mind, physical fitness would be everyone’s personal achievement. The year 2018 saw the beginning of the fitness journey for the members of Philippine Education Publishers’ Association (PEPA) with the very first Nature Fun Run held last July 28, 2018 at La Mesa EcoPark, Quezon City. It was participated in by PEPA members from different educational publishers. Abiva sent 15 employees who are all fun run enthusiasts who did not mind waking up early just so they could take part in this special event.
With
a joyous and resounding Christmas last year, all Abiva employees gathered to celebrate our Annual Thanksgiving. The event took place in Max’s Restaurant, Quezon City last December 14, 2018 with theme Country Western Hoedown. Employees donned their cowboy outfits complemented with scarfs, boot, and hats. Best Cowgirl of the Night was Vivian Ayat of Credit and Collection and Best Cowboy went to Santi Melarpis of Deskstop. Both went home with P2,000 as their prize. Our HR Department also awarded employees with Perfect Attendance record. The most-awaited part of the celebration was the group presentation of Abiva Reel: at the Movies. Employees were divided into five teams and each were tasked to perform a scene from a film of their choice and create a movie poster. Team Howdy performed Hairspray; Team Giddy-Up chose Ang Larawan; Team Yee-Haw reenacted Grease; Team Rough Rider swayed with Bohemian Rhapsody; and Team Rodeo Star sang their hearts out with The Greatest Showman. Each team had two weeks of practice and all came up with their all-out and superb performances. In the end, only one winning team emerged as the grand champion. Team Yee-Haw went for a landslide win both for live performance and poster category. Winning team were awarded P40,000 and consolation prize of P5,000 to the other teams.
Mr. Jorge A. Garcia, or Sir JAG to many us, celebrated his 60th birthday last October 26, 2018. He was surprised by his family, friends, and by Abiva employees with set design inspired by the animated movie ‘Coco’. Sir JAG was welcomed by a dance number grooved by Abiva employees. To reciprocate the surprise celebration, Sir JAG serenaded the employees by giving a sample of his guitar playing, his new passion. As part of the afternoon celebration, each department gave Sir JAG a birthday gift, all of which were organic products. Sir JAG delivered his sweet thanks to everyone who made the celebration possible. A “kaunting salo-salo” was enjoyed by all.

Everyone needs some time to relax and have fun. It is summer and this is the perfect time to take a break. Last April 26, 2019, Abiva Management and staff let loose of themselves for one full day of team building activities, karaoke sessions, food galore, lots of photo ops, and simply enjoying the pool and waves at Klir Waterpark and Resort, Guiguinto, Bulacan. Â The photos cannot lie! We all had fun!
In academe, teachers apply learning principles and teaching pedagogies in daily classroom setup. The current curriculum puts premium on literacy, numeracy, and relevant skills with global outlook. However, the challenge lies beyond knowledge transfer and the task to prepare students to be future-ready, competitive citizens. Education is a viable tool for social transformation and the educators can be the agents of such transformative education. The task is to inspire a culture of academic excellence with social responsiveness to the pressing needs of our time, such as environmental protection. Launched in 2017, Greenducation echoes the signifcant role of education in mainstreaming sustainability. It was established during the celebration of Philippine Environment Month as the youth arm of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources - Environmental Management Bureau (EMB). It serves as supplement to the mandates of the EMB, particularly the National Environmental Awareness and Education Act of 2008 (Republic Act No. 9512), and anchors on ASEAN Environmental Education Action Plan for Sustainable Development. Fundamentally, Greenducation aims to empower the Filipino youth through environmental education and green networking.
The EMB issued a call for Greenducators, comprising youth leaders and young professionals, to be ambassadors of environmental stewardship starting this 2018. One of them is Abiva’s Assistant Editor for Social Studies, Sharmaine Lizada. She currently heads the Education and Research committee of the program. Being responsible for content curation, she devised Greenducation’s core strategy “AwarenessAction-Collaboration,” lodged in objectivesetting during lesson planning which constitutes the domains of knowledge, skill, and attitude. Raising awareness is the first and crucial step in environmental education and puts premium on teaching as advocacy. The fields of academe and advocacy are mutually reinforcing. Every classroom is the microcosm of our nation and as educators, our duty is chiefly about setting the future. We are in the frontline, shaping dreams of the youth and equipping the future leaders with grounded values. We can also take an active role in ensuring a sustainable environment for the current and succeeding generations. In Greenducation, the best to teach the nation is by doing greener actions.
Congratulations to the newly elected Abiva Publishing House, Inc. Employees Association (APHIEA) Officers!
