EDITOR’S NOTE
New Employees’ Corner
Time flies by so fast when you are having fun. Work doesn’t feel work at all when you feel so much fulfillment from what you are doing, not only for the betterment of the company, but for the whole education sector. We managed to introduce the first Philippine International Conference on Teacher Education (PICTE) last September at SMX Convention Center. The enormous task of bringing together the “education rock stars” together with Philippine Normal University and Primetrade Asia brought out the best in us. All the success, opportunities, lessons, and learnings of PICTE enabled us to grow and gain from these experiences. This 2017, I enjoin everyone to make use of our learnings from the past years to make each of us better persons. May we all have a successful and prosperous new year!

Feb-IBIG @ Abiva Feb-ibig is that time of the year where streets are full of flower vendors, heart balloons, and chocolates. But the celebration is not only limited to couples who are in a relationship. APHI celebrates the spetcial hearts day by acknowledging whatever your status is whether you are in a complicated relationship, single and contented, heartbroken, moving on, searching, or married to your career. The Feb-Ibig @ Abiva held last February 14, 2017 was an afternoon filled with sweet treats. Eman Pelagio of Desktop brought home the cute teddy bear and goodies after he gave the closest guess to the number of chocolates in the chocolate jar. After the short games, everyone enjoyed heart shape donut treats.

AUTHOR TRIBUTE
Passion for Teaching Reading
“Having made my pupils able to read gives me the greatest joy,” she says.
didn’t know how to read since preschool wasn’t a requirement yet at that time. I was challenged to make every child a reader,” says this one time principal of San Sebastian College in Manila and directress of Bloomfield Academy in Las Piñas City.
This coming from a home economics major in college but who had her baptism of fire as a grade one teacher assigned to teach the lowest section in a private school
Rising to the challenge, she scoured for books in bookstores along then Rizal Avenue which she could use first before she lets her pupils read the prescribed textbooks for grade one.
“At that time, homogenous grouping was being practiced so I had the poorest readers in the level—section D, the last section. In fact, some
“With God’s help and a lot of patience and common sense, my pupils were able to read at the end of the school year.”
For seasoned educator Josefina Pano, there is nothing more exhilarating and fulfilling than teaching pupils how to read.
Reading as Specialization
She then went to get her MA degree in reading from Cardinal Stritch College in Wisconsin, USA. She was also elected secretary and later on president of the Reading Association of the Philippines, the country’s premier reading teachers’ organization which aims to improve all aspects of national reading programs and teaching procedures through teacher training and research. She was also an active member of the International Reading Association. To share her expertise, she gave numerous lectures and seminars in the teaching of reading nationwide. She authored and coordinated a bestselling series of basal text for grade school titled Soaring High in Reading and Soaring to New Heights in Language published by Abiva Publishing House.

Josefina S. Pano Author and Coordinator Soaring to New Heights Series Abiva Publishing House, Inc
Both textbook series distill and implement what Ms. Pano has believed and advocated—to help readers become strategic and active readers and learners who have a lasting love for reading and learning.
Teacher’s Lessons
For about three decades, Ms. Pano has practiced and lived excellence. For her, an excellent teacher is one who is driven by excellence himself/herself. She believed that among the characteristics of an excellent teacher are: • • • • •
Loves his/her students Patient, enthusiastic, lively, resourceful, energetic, efficient, and effective Continuously learns and grows for the students’ continued growth and learning Molds the mind, heart, and soul Teaches by example
But her greatest lesson as a teacher, author, and lifelong learner remains to be the joy of service— that the reward of a teacher is not in terms of financial returns but the sense of fulfillment it brings. “Teaching is a sacred task—we are supposed to succeed in our mission of bringing our students back to God who has given them to us.” With such respect for the teaching profession, it is no wonder that Ms. Pano has succeeded in believing, teaching, and inspiring learners to read for life. By teaching excellently, she has affirmed her belief that, “There is always a place for a good teacher.”
We will cherish the precious and life changing moments we shared with you, Ms. Pano. Your Abiva Publishing House, Inc. family thanks you for your commitment, contribution, passion and dedicated service!
Your Textbooks will continue to soar!
