EMPLOYEES’

Milestones The price of success is hard work, dedication to the job at hand, and the determination that whether we win or lose, we have applied the best of ourselves to the task at hand. - Vince Lombardi one of the most successful coaches in professional football history

JOHN ADONIS Selling is a passion and this is what drives sales people like Jonathan Adonis to excel in their chosen line of work. John, as he is more known to his friends and colleagues here at Abiva, believes in being goal-oriented and result oriented to help the company stay on top of the competition. Thanks to hardworking sales people like him, Abiva continues to enjoy a good share of the market who benefit a lot from the company’s quality textbooks and other educational materials. John started working in Abiva in 2000 as a book display coordinator (BDC) at the Marketing Department. As a BDC, it was his job to provide prospective clients with information about Abiva’s books which are put on display during seminars, conferences, and similar events. If not working as a BDC, John would be conducting surveys to help Abiva come up with textbooks and other teaching materials that suit the market. After working at the Marketing Department for two years, John, through the suggestion of Mr. Manny Capulong, the former regional sales manager of the Visayas area, moved over to the Sales Department where he made rounds of the Vis-Min, Manila, and Luzon areas. As of now, John is assigned to the Cavite area. How did John find his way to the company? While working for former Senator Manny Villar, John came across a book display of Abiva during a special event and this got him interested in marketing. John thought that working for a well-established publishing house like Abiva would give him the opportunity to learn about and “get his feet wet” in the field.

John has been working for Abiva as Sales and Service Consultant (SSC) for the past 16 years and has no regrets staying in the company this long. Being part of the Abiva Sales team, the company provides them with the resources they need such as allowances, incentives, and service vehicle to help them reach their sales target. John enjoys freedom of movement, the opportunity to talk and establish business relations with schools, and do service to the country by offering Abiva quality written textbooks to different schools. Throughout the years of staying with Abiva, John feels that he has experienced professional growth and development in the performance of his job. He has developed that kind of maturity needed in order to be able to communicate with different kinds of clients. Above all, the company has helped him to hone his selling skills. Asked what his advice is to the younger employees, John has this to say: “Look at your work as a blessing. Be goal oriented, result oriented, and solution oriented.”

RICO ARCHES Making sure that Abiva’s textbooks get to its clients on time is the job of Rico Arches from Warehouse Department. Rico, has been working for the company for the past 20 years. (I learn a lot.)” Working for Abiva has allowed Rico to develop and hone his skills at the department where he currently works. Rico has had some unforgettable experiences while working for the company. One of these is participating in the grand celebration of Abiva’s 75th year anniversary which was held in 2006 at the Oasis Pavillion, Quezon City. Asked for his advice to the young employees of the company, Rico said that they should take the opportunity to develop their skills, love their work, and be patient.

EMIL FEGARIDO The SRA Reading Laboratory continues to be Abiva’s highest selling product and this is because of the hard work and dedication put into it by Emil Fegarido and the rest of the staff at the SRA Department headed by Miss Nancy Almonte. Emil, as he is popularly known to his friends and colleagues, makes sure that the needs of the sales service consultants (SSCs), subject area consultants, and clients are always attended to, especially during seminars and meetings. And this is what he has been doing ever since he came to Abiva in 1999. How did Emil end up working for Abiva? According to Emil, he had always been looking for an opportunity to work in the publishing industry and Abiva gave him that opportunity. For the past 15 years, Emil has been working as an SRA Coordinator. The job calls for Emil to prepare the place and the things needed for SRA seminars and similar events. He also coordinates with the participants and resource persons. Such tasks keep Emil on his toes the whole day. He adds that he is also responsible for preparing

the reports coming from his department. But in spite of the seemingly big responsibilities he has to take care of, Emil has stayed on with the company. For Emil, he enjoys the kind of leeway and trust the company gives him to perform his daily tasks. The good bosses at Abiva inspire Emil to work harder. Here at Abiva, Emil improved his skill in the use of his computer skills and in communicating with customers who visit Abiva showroom. What is his advice to the younger employees? Do not be afraid to approach those who have worked longer in the company because they will be able to learn a lot from these people.

GERLY NATIVIDAD In any family, someone stands as the big sister. At Abiva Publishing House Inc, Miss Gerly Natividad or Ate Gerly, as she is more well-known to the other members of the Abiva family, is that “sister.” She started out in 1983 as a billing clerk and bookstore cashier and she currently works in the Accounting Department as an Accounting Assistant. Asked why she chose to work for Abiva, Gerly believes that the company gives her better opportunities to provide for the needs of her parents and siblings. Gerly likes the way management treats its employees. This is what has prodded her to stay on and continue working for the company.

Gerly believes that the many experiences she has had and the challenges she encountered while working for Abiva have contributed greatly to her growth and development as an employee of the company. Some of these moments were bonding with friends at lunch, participating in various company events such as Christmas parties and anniversary celebrations, merienda time, birthday celebrations, and traveling with friends to different places. What advice does Gerly want to impart to the younger employees of APHI? They must learn to love their work and show concern for the company, the management, their fellow employees, and customers as well. That’s because the work they have is their “bread and butter” and a blessing for which they should always be grateful.

Before being assigned to her present position, Ela used to work as one of the accounts coordinators at the Credit and Collection Department where she first started out in 1990. One of Ela’s fondest memories while working for C&C was receiving the AC Award of the Year in 2010 for each of the three areas she handled.

To the young employees here at the company, Ela advises them to always be patient with their work and learn how to multitask. That’s because multitasking allows them to become g o o d a t and familiar with the facets of their work.

What Ela likes most about working for Abiva is that management treats each employee as a member of the family. The trust that management puts in each employee and the management’s generosity in giving benefits

RAPHAEL CRISTOBAL Always been passionate about books, Raphael Cristobal or “Paeng” to his friends and colleagues, carries with him the same passion in his current position as the editorial manager of the Production Department here at Abiva. Starting out as a proofreader way back in 1987, Paeng has indeed come a long way since then. As editorial manager, Paeng sees to it that Abiva’s books live up to the high quality standards set by the House and are correct in every detail. Paeng started out at Abiva as one of the subject area editors of the Production Department. Through the years, he has helped churn out best selling series like Soaring to New Heights in Reading, Soaring to New Heights in Language, Speech, and Godward. According to Paeng, he chose to work for Abiva because the company opened up an opportunity for him to return to the publishing industry (he was on respite for two years) and do what he has always loved doing— editing manuscripts.

Previously, he worked as a call center agent but realized that he was not meant for the job. Thus, when he learned about the job opening for editors here at Abiva, he did not have second thoughts about applying for the position. And the rest, they say, is history! How has the company contributed to his professional growth and development? According to Paeng, working at Abiva for the past 11 years has allowed him to further improve his skills in editing. And of course, his current designation as editorial manager is a welcome change for him. He challenges himself to live up to the demands of the job. He sees the position as a chance to provide opportunities for collaboration, peer review, and feedback on ideas and work processes. Throughout his stay here at APHI, Paeng has had some wonderful and unforgettable memories. Some of these are his much-applauded and high energy performances during Christmas parties and other special occasions, his participation in the sportsfests, and company outings. Asked for his advice to the younger employees of APHI, Paeng has this to say: “Love your job and be serious about it. Take it as something that will nurture you personally and professionally. Work fairly and appreciate opportunities that the company gives you. Give what is due to the company and the company will give what is due for you.”
