We believe that the surrounding residential areas play an immense role in the enlivening of the center. Therefore we planned a variety different dwelling areas for different groups of the community. Next to the cultural center there are apartment buildings. The roof space on the mall was unutilized before. It is such a large area that we believed it would be well employed as space for student housing (1.). We wanted to approach this with a new take in mind. Instead of impersonal commune living, the area consists of small one to two person houses of 25 and 40 square meters. This housing area is like a miniature town with small windmills, solar panels on the roof and greenhouses in the middle of the courtyards. The houses are colorful and the scale very humane. The atmosphere is that of small holdings – communal, with privacy and charm.

We wanted to sustain local livelihood by bringing firms and producers to the best spot in the city for business. We suggest that a market hall (2.) is built to the side of the mall building. This way the cargo area and the dull façade are hidden behind a new structure that connects well to the city space, while making the space on the square somewhat smaller and hospitable. Local producers can sell their products by driving their vans into the southern wing of the market hall and simply making use of one of the provided booths. Small cafés and restaurants can be situated here and handicrafts can be sold from rental spaces. The façade is cozy and colorful. Wooden shutters can be opened and closed according to need. The function of the building can be varied according to use.

The city of Alta is surrounded by beautiful nature. Traditional plants cannot be maintained in the climate, but some, such as local trees, lichen and moss can be utilized in the embellishment of the space. (3.)
