CHANEL embarked on watchmaking in 1987 and the idea was simple: offer a specifically feminine watch that wasn’t a disguised version of the masculine models. The Premiere watch was born. Its shape is reminiscent of both the Place Vendôme and the iconic lid of the No.5 perfume bottle. The very quintessence of elegance and femininity, it was an immediate success.

REPURPOSE Don’t be afraid of using antiques to suit your needs. A late 19th century or early 20th century chest of drawers is probably less expensive than a new one that you would buy today. Repurpose a chest into a bathroom vanity by placing a sink in it. Turn an old vase into a table lamp. Look to old objects as a source to create wonderful new pieces that fit your needs today.

60

1. Find a place for every item. The reason for things piling up is that they have no place. Start compartmentalizing your belongings – place things you use frequently in accessible places and the rest can be tucked away neatly somewhere. 2. Stop hoarding Why keep age old items in your house if they are of no use? If something is outdated, broken, stained or unusable it’s time to get rid of it. 3. Be regular Organizing your home isn’t a one-time activity. It is something that needs regular attention. Some spaces like kitchen counters, need daily de-cluttering. 4. Storage solutions Get yourself some creative storage solutions that look fantastic, work with your lifestyle and make your home function better as well. These can range from baskets and containers to magazine holders. 5. Maximize your space Get the best use of out of all available space in cupboards, cabinets and drawers. Divide closets into sections with different types of storage - rods for hanging clothes, drawers and shelves for folded clothes, hooks for belts and so on. 6. Weed out your wardrobe Chances are your closet is filled with clothes that you rarely wear. Simply re-arranging them won’t serve the purpose. Yes, it’s time to give them away. Why not give them to someone who would make

better use of it instead of clogging your space? 7. One day at a time Don’t take up more than you can handle. While you might give yourself one day to de-clutter your entire house, chances are the sheer mess you see when you start the task will put you off. Take one room and a day and save yourself the frustration! 8. Multi-functional furniture If you have a small space and too many things, going for multifunctional furniture is a good idea. Beds with headboard storage, ottomans, and under-bed storage are all clever ways to organize your home and keep it clutter free. 9. Shelve-up Shelves can really enhance a space. The open display provides easy access and allows you to stack and store products and make the most of your space. They are an easy way to get clutter off the floor and make the perfect home for books, CDs, toys and other important items. 10. Discard duplicates When one thing can serve your purpose well, keeping more than one similar items will just add to the clutter. While it is useful to have duplicates of some items, there are duplicates of others that are absolutely necessary.

Boulangerry Blogs Dining outside the ABODE

A new column, how exhilarating! I’m so thrilled to begin penning this monthly feature with ABODE magazine. My bailiwick now is to get you to leave your private sanctuary and discover Doha’s restaurant scene, and contrary to popular perception, they don’t have to cost a fortune! That’s right, I’m all about dining outside the ABODE! by Gerald Tan

Thai Smile

Mashawi al Arabi

One of my favorite neighborhood restaurants is Thai Smile in Umm Ghuwailina. You just know you’re in for a treat when Richard Marx and Celine Dion are belting out power ballads over the PA system while the muted television is airing a live boxing match in Bangkok!

If you like the hours but not a multitudinous array of dishes, then the place to be is Mashawi al Arabi! This humble eatery along Nasr street offers a selection of Turkish pies and pizzas, mezzes and grills. There are a few tables inside for those dining on hummous and lamb chops, but I take my cue from the crowds lingering outside with a shawarma in hand. The real treat is if somebody orders the house special; a hummer shawarma. That’s two feet worth of carved meat, veggies, and fries all rolled together in a flash-grilled flatbread; I’ve never been able to muster enough appetite to finish one. Every visit I make, I leave with the same satiated feeling of foodie bliss.

The menu is extensive and features green papaya salad to tom yam soup and Panang curry. I tend to start with the yam plaa fu, the catfish is flaked and deep fried until it takes on the consistency of a fluffy batter, then sprinkled liberally over a crunchy salad of young, tart mangoes. The combination is dynamite, and the dish habit-forming! I get different mains each time I come here and have never been disappointed; the restaurant even experiments with salmon, pairing it with crispy basil leaves or red curry to terrific effect. Those who like a fiery curry for breakfast can find comfort here; it’s open from 6:00 a.m. to 2:00 a.m.

CHEF CHALLENGE

Power foods

that make our skin Glow!

Food prepared by Executive Chef Andreas Haugg Photography by Jessie Palanca Compiled by Marlynne Mallari – Dela Pena

Are you ready to truly care for your skin? Beauty starts from within - that holds true to what we eat, if we eat junk it shows on our skin but if you incorporate greens, fruits and fish it makes a huge difference. Chef Andreas Haugg, Executive Chef of Banana Island Resort Doha by Anantara knows only too well what healthy food can do to our system, bringing with him a ‘healthy’ experience in the food business; he and his team concoct these three dishes that are refreshingly tasty and good for your skin. It is time to make small changes in what you eat and reap the longterm benefits of having a supple and glowing countenance.

Beetroot Carpaccio, Arugula, Roasted Walnut and Apple Dressing Ingredients 500g beetroot • 180g arugula • 3tbsp walnuts • 1 green apple 50g cucumber • 2tbsp parmesan cheese • salt and pepper according to taste • 1tbsp olive oil

Procedure 1. Boil the beetroot, peel the skin, slice very thin and place on a plate and season with the apple dressing, salt and pepper. Place the arugula salad in the centre, with olive oil and parmesan flakes. 2. Add some rockets, cucumber and parmesan on top and finish with fresh olive oil.

Ingredients Beetroot is a rich source of anthocyanin, a powerful antioxidant that prevents the appearance of wrinkles. Your skin will look pink and glowing if you eat beetroot.

70

Pan Seared Salmon Fillet, Sautéed Spinach, and Tomato Coulis Ingredients 2 tbsp onion chopped • 1 tsp garlic chopped • 150g spinach leaves • 800g Salmon steak skin on • 500g tomato • 1/2 cup potato (puree) • 50g cherry tomato • 40g asparagus • Salt and pepper to taste • 2 tbsp olive oil

Procedure 1. Heat oil add half of onion and garlic with fresh tomato and tomato puree cooked and blend for the sauce, check seasoning. 2. Add the rest of the onion and garlic to sauté the spinach and add seasoning. 3. Marinate the fish and pan sear, then bake in the oven for 3 minutes. 4. Roast the potatoes with herbs. 5. Place the spinach on a plate then top with salmon. 6. Add potato, tomato coulis on the side and finish with fresh crunchy asparagus.

WORD FROM THE CHEF Salmon is rich in omega-3 fatty acids, a family of fatty acids that is gaining popularity for their critical role in promoting healthy skin. Spinach possesses anti-inflammatory properties which flush out toxins, giving clear and glowing skin. Tomato is rich in antioxidant called lycopene which has anti-ageing properties and also acts as a sunscreen.

71

HOTEL OF THE MONTH

The Westin DOHA Hotel & Spa Doha’s Serene Downtown Sanctuary by Annabel Rooney

On February 1st, the Westin Doha Hotel & Spa opened its doors to the public for the first time. As usual here in Qatar, the hotel was received with great interest from locals and expats alike, all flocking to test the service, grounds and tastes of Doha’s latest addition! Take a tour with our Editor Annabel from the reception, through to the room, and out onto the terrace, with a blissful pit stop at the Heavenly spa®. The entrance to the hotel on Salwa road is fairly hidden, however, once found, it takes on a hanging-gardens-ofbabylon-esque feel with stretching green lawns, trees lining the driveway, and a sweeping lobby entrance to rival any luxury hotel around the world. Upon my arrival, I’m ushered helpfully to the front desk for a stress-free check in. I was then shown to my room where I was met with a 52sqm space fully decked out with an executive desk, a 48” LCD TV, the Westin’s signature Heavenly® Bed, and a sumptuous welcome treat selection of dried fruits, nuts and chocolate biscuits. Breakfast at the Westin Doha Hotel & Spa is a very different one compared to other hotels around Doha. Your health and wellness is greatly taken care of by the Westin. The breakfast buffet includes a variety of delicious SuperFoodsRx™ dishes packed with nutrients and energy. Antioxidant-rich and naturally low in calories, the Westin’s tempting selections make healthy choices on the spread impossible to resist. Created together with doctors and nutritionists, the Westin’s SuperFoodsRx™ menu cultivates “food synergy”, the pairing of certain foods to increase their nutritional value, to give you the focused energy you need to meet the challenges

of your day. There are also an assortment of nourishing, healthy juices and smoothies, which have been curated in partnership with the experts at ‘The Juicery’. Each custom blend packs a punch of revitalizing goodness and is available at selected hotels and resorts worldwide. Among these healthy treats is a full buffet inclusive of warm bread, cereals, fruit salads and many other hot breakfast dishes. After catching up on some daily news, I headed over to the Heavenly Spa located on the ground floor. The Spa menu includes conditioning paraffin hand and foot treatments, healing massages, cleansing facials and more. Choose your preferred treatments, and let their expert therapists rejuvenate your body and mind. It is an incredible sanctuary in which it is easily forgotten that one is only a few doors away from the hustle and bustle of the city. I selected the signature massage in which a pressure of your choice is applied to the body by the professional masseuse starting from your back to your arms and finally the rest of your body. It felt as though the daily pressures of working in the magazine industry disappeared at the touch of her hands! After my massage, I navigated my way through to the private treatment area where I had the opportunity to lounge

around in the serene relaxation area, which comes complete with health teas, fruit and nuts for us to enjoy. Making my way back up to the room, I looked forward to making use of the luxurious bathroom amenities every room at the Westin has to offer. A spacious area that features the Westin’s Signature White Tea Aloe bath amenities including shampoos and conditioners, extra-large combed cotton bath sheets and custom-designed bathrobes that help you feel pampered and invigorated. Following the vision of the Heavenly® Bed, the Heavenly® Bath redefines the shower experience with a revitalizing rain shower and a revolutionary curved shower rod, ideal for those of us who love to spend a little extra time in the shower! I was very relaxed and ready for dinner. Sabai Thai is located in the grounds and is surrounded by a pretty lazy river feature which complements the ample of green space, which ends with a Koy Carp pond outside the restaurant, creating a calming rhythm of water as you dine. Differing from the usual Thai food offered here in Doha, this cuisine is unique due to Sabai Thai’s inventive yet authentic menus. It showcases the season’s finest ingredients at

their irresistible best. Guests can enjoy kitchen theatrics of flaming woks and energize chopping; as you view the chefs prepare culinary delights at the live two cooking stations. Coming soon, a business lunch will also be served I tested a few of the dishes and to my pleasant surprise it really did offer a modern yet authentic taste of Royal Thai cuisine. The restaurant is usually fully booked on the weekends so to enjoy this lovely cuisine, a booking is a must. After a long day exploring this beautiful hotel, the Heavenly® Bed beckoned. I have travelled to many different countries around the world in my lifetime and have stayed in many different hotels as a result and this bed is by far the most comfortable I have ever had the pleasure of sleeping in. Because good sleep is critical for both mental and physical health, every detail of the Heavenly Bed® promotes superior slumber. Naturally, I jumped onto the 250-thread count bed and was fast asleep before my head even hit the fluffy pillow! Book now at the Westin Doha Hotel & Spa on 4492 1555 or email reservations.doha@westin.com or visit westindoha.com A better hotel, for a better you.

SOCIETY

Having been involved in the underground dance music scene for the last decade, French-Canadian DJ Sophie (Sopheye) Richards’ talent and passion have already taken her around the world, playing at locations in the U.S., Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. This month, ABODE caught up with the jet setter, to find out more about her.

By Jennifer Douglas Photographs courtesy of Soph-eye

ABODE: When and how did you first get into music? SR: My journey with music started at a very young age. As a child, I was very perceptive, intuitive and I often felt misunderstood. Music was the one thing I could sink into and find comfort. Around 15 years old, I started focusing on dancing through the Hip Hop scene, which is where I was first exposed to DJing. A few years later, I went to college and university as a jazz and classical voice major. Studying music inspired me to pick up basic skills in other instruments such as drums, and take classes in sound engineering and music production. ABODE: How would you describe your musical style? SR: As a DJ, my sound is a mixture of Deep House, Afro House, Soulful House, Classic House, Nu Disco, Funk and Disco. I like percussion, dance-driven rhythms, quirky sounds and captivating vocals. The music I play is a portrayal of my musical heritage and my background as a musician, dancer and songwriter.

84

ABODE: Can you describe the scene in Doha and what you enjoy about it? SR: Doha has a very interesting social scene because it is in constant evolution, due to its socio-cultural-economic situation and its tourism. The challenge I enjoy is to bring people together through music they can relate to, while doing the most important part of a DJ’s jobeducating musically through a journey of sound. Making people dance and discover new music, seeing such cultural diversity when I play in a venue in Doha, and the enthusiasm people have for wanting to have a great time is what makes me enjoy playing here.

ABODE: What advice would you give to aspiring DJs? SR: Start from the basics. Learn how to beat match your music by ear, understand the stylistic approach you want to take and most importantly, study its history and the history of the musical genre you are looking into specializing; knowledge is power. In order to be a good DJ, you really need to love music, to want to know everything you can about music and to have so much music, that you cannot wait to share it.

ABODE: Where can we see you perform? SR: Most of my gigs and residencies are currently between the Middle East and Asia. I’m happy to announce that I ABODE: What are your future career have some upcoming dates in Europe in 2016, which is something I am really aspirations? SR: I am definitely planning on releasing excited about! more of my music; as a singer, songwriter and producer. I want to keep touring and Find out more about DJ Soph-eye and her discovering this beautiful world, and upcoming performances on Facebook at playing for different kinds of audiences. https://www.facebook.com/meettheeyes, I’m an overachiever and it’s in my nature or follow her on Twitter: @meettheeyes, and Instagram: @meettheeyes. to think big!

CAR REVIEW

BMW 7 SERIES

BMW have elected to unveil their new automotive offering to the Middle East car market by launching the 7 Series right here in Doha, Qatar. The sophisticated sedan has arrived onto the Qatari shores with a whole host of new technologies and design feature updates.

T

he flagship model of the BMW brand, the 7 Series leaves an indelible mark on whoever experiences it. The Doberman-esque swagger and its undeniable smooth ride gives the driver a unique driving experience. In its sixth incarnation, the BMW 7 series brings new meaning to luxury. The car includes industry-first features that set it

94

way apart from any of its competitors. At the unveiling ceremony, guests had the chance to see first-hand the unrivalled quality, technology and comfort on display. The newest instalment from BMW certainly doesn’t disappoint with its new BMW ConnectedDrive driver assistance features which include the intuitive Touch

Command: a 7-inch tablet positioned in the rear of the vehicle, offering passengers an entirely new experience in controlling multiple in-car functions. Through Touch Command, rear passengers can control in-car infotainment and comfort features, such as the new BMW 7 Series Vitality Programme, which offers luxurious in-seat massage options. A unique Gesture Control function that offers those inside the vehicle with the option to increase the volume of the radio only by gesturing at the screen. Johannes Seibert, Managing Director for BMW Group Middle East, was present and commented: “The sixth generation model embodies the true essence of modern mobility, with the highest quality and absolute precision. The Middle East is one of the biggest 7 Series markets in the world; we are confident the newest instalment will not disappoint.” Driver and passengers alike can also look forward to the BMW 7 Series’ Sky Lounge, a panorama glass roof welcoming them to enjoy the day or the star-filled night sky, as illuminated light patterns provide a luxurious interior light ambience in six colours. The Techy Stuff Proving that personalised innovation is as crucial as design and ambience, the vehicle’s advanced chassis technology, which allows the driver to adjust the car’s set-up to their preferred requirements, creates an ideal balance between sports performance and comfort. Similarly, the vehicle’s progressive Driver Assistance Systems, including Lane Control Assistance, which ensures drivers do not have to change the customary positioning of their hands on the steering wheel in order to undertake on-road manoeuvres.

Fast and fabulous In sport mode, the chassis tenses (but in a good way) and drops lower over the wheels. The 7 Series delivers impressive body control and steering you can trust. Given the intricacy of the chassis’ mechanical and electronic systems, the 7 Series also manages to establish clear lines of communication to each corner of the car. This allows you to drive with confidence, on roads that you would expect to severely test the nimblest of sedans. The 7 Series is hushed once running, torque-rich and strong enough to deliver useful queue-hopping acceleration. The 7-series strives to be a kind of low-flying Lear jet for those keen to cocoon themselves from the noise and hubbub of road travel. Final thoughts For a car that is traditional in style and conservative in design, the new 7-series has a tremendous feel-good factor. Truly, it’s a technological powerhouse, from the i-inspired structural carbon fibre to the dismissal of unwanted phone calls with a nonchalant swipe of the hand. For all of its innovation, the 7 Series remains a captivating driving machine, one that can transform at will between the latest in high-end car luxury to an admirably responsive sports sedan.

Exuding confidence and power, the new model also comes armed with two comprehensively revised engines: the 6 cylinder 740iLi and 8 cylinder 750iLi xDrive, with the latter accelerating from 0–100 km/h in just 4.4 seconds at 450 hp, and the 6-cylinder equivalent offering an impressive 326hp, with a maximum torque of 450 Nm at 1 380 rpm. The on-road performance of both variants is enhanced through the incorporation of BMW EfficientDynamics, such as the premium vehicle’s lightweight Carbon Core, which ensures that the car is 130kg lighter than its predecessor.
