EDITOR IN CHIEF's L E T T E R Dear Readers, Hello, and welcome to our August issue of ABODE magazine. As we enter the second half of the summer, I hope all of our readers enjoyed a fun-filled Eid Al Fitr. August can be a bittersweet month as students begin to count down the final weeks and days until the start of the fall school term, while the rest of us try to settle back into our normal workday routines. I am very proud to have our editor Annabel interview the acclaimed mountaineer, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdullah Al Thani. He is a highly accomplished man, having just summited Mount Denali in North America, completing the seven summits across the world. These mountains are located in seven different continents and consist of Aconcagua in South America, Denali in North America, Kilimanjaro in Africa, Elbrus in Europe, Vinson in Antarctica, Kosciuszko in Australia, and finally Everest in Asia. Sheikh Mohammed is the first Qatari to stand atop Everest, an achievement we as a nation are incredibly proud of. Our cover this month features a prominent designer in Saudi Arabia, Nora Al Shaikh, whose designs have not only captured the attention of Saudi’s female youth but also, most recently, of the Qatari community too. Join us as we learn about the young, budding designer and find out how the Gulf is changing its attitude to fashion design. Among the many other interesting articles we compiled for you this month are Ralph Lauren’s newest spring collection for men, Hunters Room and Grill debuts in Doha and we travel to the sunny city of Vienna in search of beautiful scenery and magnificent artwork dating back to the early 1900’s. Kick back and enjoy the read while we work on yet another fabulous issue of ABODE magazine.

THE PUMA SUEDE FRESH SINCE 1968
S
ince it’s debut in 1968, the PUMA Suede has become a benchmark for footwear design and enjoyed an amazing run as a cultural artefact from one of the most progressive and historically significant eras of the twentieth century. Made famous by athletic greats - 60’s track stars Tommie Smith and 70’s basketball legend Walt "Clyde" Frazier, the Suede hit new levels of fame during the 80's dawn of b-boys and hip hop beats, taking over New York City blocks. This season, PUMA puts the limelight on a young roster of tastemakers currently making waves in the music and entertainment arena. Style icon and social phenomenon Kylie Jenner, snap queen and director of vibes YesJulz, hip hop’s catchiest duo Rae Sremmurd and 100% amped up rap artist Young Thug round up this amazing list of creatives.

PROMOTION These kids don’t work 9-5, they’re on Snapchat 24-7 and the Suede is a staple in their sneaker rotation. Today they are keeping the sneaker culture interesting and alive with their unique sense of style and influence. As a cool nod to the past, PUMA tapped legendary OG street photographer Jamel Shabazz to shoot the young tastemakers in Suedes and streetwear garb around Bedstuy in Brooklyn. Shabazz was instrumental in popularising the Suede in the 80’s with his snaps of the New York City street culture and hip hop scene. The images will be showcased in PUMA stores globally and featured on social channels. Seeing this young breed of tastemakers rocking the Suede gives the iconic sneaker a fresh perspective. We can only be sure that the Suede will continue to transcend cultural trends and generations in the coming years. Find PUMA’s Fall 2016 collection in stores in Villaggio Mall. Guram Gvasalia
7/24/16 11:49 AM
Vetements exploded onto the fashion scene in 2014 when Georgian brothers Demna and Guram Gvasalia decided to shift the fashion game and focus on impactful pieces with immediate appeal rather than follow the seasonal fashion cycle. Since then, Vetements has rapidly become one of the most talked about labels in the world and undergoing much scrutiny when it comes to luxury and exclusivity. While Guram handles the business side, Demna (who also happens to be Balenciaga’s newly appointed Creative Director) heads the design department along with a team consisting of talented members who have previously worked with leading international brands including Maison Margiela, Balenciaga, Céline, and Louis Vuitton, among others. The brand’s aesthetic is centred around rough pieces that are elegantly deconstructed. Oversized pants and throw coats, asymmetrical silhouettes, convertible dresses, and hand-chopped hems are common characteristics that are featured in almost every collection. A graduate of London’s College of Fashion, Guram’s strategy is to limit production of the brand’s most coveted pieces. The thinking behind this is that retailers, as well as consumers, will have the opportunity to cherish these items for a longer time. Guram, the label’s CEO, hopes that the business model helps the industry move away from the idea of fast fashion to what he calls “slow fashion”. One of Vetements’ secrets to success is that they never ever restock their pieces, meaning that once an item is sold out, it doesn’t get reproduced. By doing so, they can ensure that their clients really do feel that their purchase is a one-off.

So, how is the brand challenging the status quo of luxury fashion? For one, they have produced items such as hoodies that have sold out within hours and, as a result, have become cult pieces. On another hand, Vetements has shied away from the glitz and glamour of showing at the likes of Paris’ lavish Grand Palais and Palais Tokyo and instead resorts to out of the box places including sloppy Chinese restaurants. The brand’s success was not overlooked by industry professionals; France’s Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture actually granted Vetements a guest membership to show during July’s Couture Fashion Week in Paris. Shocking everyone, the brand presented its

Spring/Summer 2017 men’s and women’s collections on July 6th, 2016. The show took place in the corridors of Paris’ Galleries Lafayette and saw collaborations between well-known brands including Levi’s, Juicy Couture, and Manolo Blahnik. Second skin tops and trousers were studded with the Juicy Couture monogram while waist-high boots were introduced in bold, striking colours. Blahnik contributed with flashy pumps with high heels and extensive ankle straps. Everyday shoes came in the form of Dr. Martin’s classic black boots with intricate black topstitching with the words “Border Line” embossed on the back. Deconstructed grey suits and hanging belts also made an appearance on the runway, while shirts were left unbuttoned at the waist, exposing the models’ bodies.

Fall 2016 Couture
Paris is home to Couture week, held bi-annually each year. To be defined a piece of haute couture, the clothing is custom-made to fit the wearer and hand-sewn by multiple skilled artisans in the separate fields of embroidery, stitching, and beading. Only the highest quality of materials are used. We weave our way through Fall Couture Week, detailing the masterful craftsmanship evident throughout each collection. Words by Lara Bechalany

Christian Dior Interim designers Lucie Meier and Serge Ruffieux presented a collection all about volume, spacy fabrics, and lots of movement that appeals to real women. With the 'Bar' jacket serving as the main inspiration, the looks were produced in strictly white and black hues with hints of gold. While the collection was easy on the eyes, the cuts were anything but: pleated, panelled, and tucked pieces were sown and constructed to perfection. Verdict: A resounding success for co-Creative Directors Meier and Ruffieux. We’re looking forward to seeing what Valentino’s Maria Grazia Chiuri brings when she presents her first Ready-To-Wear show for the label come September.

Chanel Paris’ Grand Palais became the home of Chanel’s atelier as more than 80 seamstresses sewed and ironed at their stations. Pants made a surprise appearance as did jumpsuits in a new venture for the brand. Speaking about the show, Creative Director Karl Lagerfeld said: “I thought it was a modern idea that the seamstresses should participate so that people pay attention to them because the craftsmanship is so unbelievable.“ Verdict: An ode to the unnamed soldiers who make it happen; Lagerfeld pushed boundaries with his daring runway show that makes Chanel all the more revered as a 'maison de la mode'.

Elie Saab Sublime, bedazzled 3D florals and star-like studded crystal embroidery took centre stage as Elie Saab presented his 'Impressions of New York' inspired collection in Paris. His magical dresses were adorned with crystallised versions of New York’s iconic skyscrapers as others were decorated with ostrich feathers that symbolised the city’s birds. Verdict: It’s pleasant to see Saab venture into a new aesthetic while bringing back many of his early 2000's cuts and silhouettes that helped put him on the international fashion scene.

Zuhair Murad Beaded fringes, subtle embroidery, crisscross lace, flared sleeves, and tassels; these are the characteristics of Zuhair Murad’s couture Bohemian rhapsody for the Fall season. The Lebanese designer’s aesthetic for the season includes velvet capes with sublime finishing and skin-baring dresses in striking purple, flashy gold and royal blue. Looks were cinched with velvet waist belts and oversized hats were worn to validate the designer’s theme. Verdict: A couture show that speaks to the younger boho chic woman in us all.

Valentino Sheer draped chiffons and elusive embroidery turned a celebration of Shakespeare 400 years after his death into a very regal affair. For their final collaboration as co-Creative Directors, Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli pulled out all the stops. Black, white, and red dominated the mid-century themed collection in sublime cuts and embroideries. Verdict: A fascinating choice of theme, it would be interesting to see how clients will interpret this into their everyday lives.

Giambattista Valli Giambattista Valli’s puffball show finale gowns got even bigger this season. With drape, endless tiers of fairytale tulle, pleats, and a few caped looks, Giambattista Valli’s collection was a dream that was interpreted in soft pastels, including clear blue, soft pistachio, and blush. Puffs were executed in silk taffeta and ruffles were done in soft organza. Verdict: Another dreamy collection that transports you to a faraway land.

Ralph & Russo Presenting a Sylvan Scene that emulates the perfection and chaos of nature’s enchanted realms, the Fall 16/17 collection was alive with cascading blossoms, laser-cut butterflies, dewy tulle sheaths and metallic dragonflies. Verdict: A renewed interpretation of a fantastical wilderness and its binaries, the collection pursued the intersection between dusk and dawn, the romantic and the mystique. Punctuated by laser cut taffeta forms, bold prints and bohemian mini skirts, Fall 16/17 is a fantasia redefining artistry and reinterpreting the eternal cycle of being.

ince launching her namesake label
Nora Al Shaikh in 2012, the young Saudi Arabian designer has carved out a niche for herself with graphic prints and a rich mix of colours. Nora explains: "My approach to design is very personal and I always have a confident modern woman in mind when creating each collection. Fashion can be very inspiring and empowering at the same time, but it's also important to dress women for the many roles they play in their daily lives." After graduating with a degree in Business Administration, Nora pursued a career in fashion design at Riyadh's first design school, the Arts & Skills Institute. She presented her first collection in 2009 at Saks Fifth Avenue Riyadh

her to continue to create clothing for the contemporary woman living in the GCC. ABODE Editor Annabel chatted with Nora and got her verdict on what it really takes to be a successful designer in the Gulf.

Resort 2017 Nora Al Shaikh
ABODE: What first kick-started your passion for creating your own clothing? I’ve been interested in fashion from an early age, but when I initially began to think about what I wanted to pursue as a career after graduating from high school, fashion seemed like a far off world because we didn’t have the resources here in Saudi Arabia, such as design schools or fashion houses to train and intern at. 10 years ago the concept of becoming a fashion designer or even acknowledging the existence of a fashion scene was inconceivable. We were discouraged from pursuing such careers in favour of what were considered more stable jobs such as business or medicine. Around the time I graduated, the Arts and Skills Institute opened in Riyadh, which offered the first fashion design courses in the Kingdom. Today you find that many of the young designers who have set up labels in Saudi were some of the first graduates of the school.
ABODE: You first launched a ready-to-wear line in 2012. What does it take to sustain a fashion label in the Gulf?
28
ABODE AUG.indd 28
Fall 2016 Nora Al Shaikh
After graduating I knew I wanted to begin my own label. In the Gulf, there are very few opportunities for internships with established fashion companies. This would have been the next natural step, but instead, many of us had to take a leap of faith and launch our labels without anyone providing us with a blueprint. We really had to learn as we went along and through trial and error. From setting up one's own studio to production, there are a lot of hurdles to overcome which is why I’m proud to have sustained and grown my business gradually over the last five years. There is so much hype in fashion, particularly with the media praising up and coming designers, only to see them disappear after a few years because they couldn’t sustain their business. Early on I made a concerted effort
7/24/16 11:49 AM
Fall 2016 Nora Al Shaikh
to take small steps in terms of fine-tuning my designs, producing at a professional level and presenting the collection to press and buyers at international standards. It’s an ongoing process and with each collection, I grow as a designer.
ABODE: The creative market here in the GCC is saturated with very talented designers such as yourself. How have you formed your own identity in Saudi Arabia? I think if you take a closer look you would be surprised to know we are a pretty small group of designers trying to establish labels at an international level. Even though I look to influences all over the world I’m still channelling it through my own unique Saudi lens. I’m not as interested in looking at clichés of Saudi styles so much as exploring what it means to be a global citizen as a Saudi.
ABODE: Your recent Resort collection focuses on the diverse aesthetics of Africa. How did their traditional dress influence your collection? Can you elaborate on the collection’s name, ‘Mzuqa’?
Resort 2017 Nora Al Shaikh
ABODE AUG.indd 29
For my debut Resort 2016-17 collection, I looked to Africa for inspiration, but not in a literal way. There is a Maasai reference but it’s part of a much larger narrative that I’m trying to convey. Having recently moved to the port city of Jeddah, I was intrigued by its proximity to the African continent and its presence in this city, which has been shaped by waves of pilgrims and traders.
29
7/24/16 11:49 AM
Exploring 21st century Africa chic, I began by looking at the work of famed Malian photographers Malick Sidibé and Seydou Keïta. There was something incredibly modern and style-conscious about their images of youth in the 1960s and 70's. I also took inspiration from Janet Jackson’s 1997 video, ‘You don’t know what you got till it’s gone,’ which was based on the work of these two photographers. I wanted to capture the video’s timeless sensibility in my collection. Of the collection's name, I met a Kenyan girl in Dubai who explained that "Mzuqa" is slang for all that is young, modern and stylish…a word that perfectly describes this collection.
ABODE: You are quite the seasoned traveller, Nora. Which country are you most inspired by? I always keep my Saudi heritage in the back of my mind, but it’s the opportunity to experience different cultures that intrigues me. I travel to Paris and Los Angeles quite a bit and they are like second homes to me, but at the same time, I love to discover new places such as a recent trip to Sri Lanka. As a designer, I absorb everything I see and it somehow comes out in my design process.
ABODE: What is the most rewarding experience of being an established designer? The beauty of fashion is that we can all relate to it on some level no matter where one is from in the world. That, in turn, creates an unexpected platform for crosscultural conversations. For the last two years, I’ve been organising trunk shows in places such as Decades in Los Angeles that gives me exposure to an entirely new audience, and it’s great to be able to meet women from different cultures and see how they wear my clothes. For me, it is one of the most rewarding experiences of being a fashion designer. It’s a reminder that we have a lot more in common than we think if we only take the time to get to know each other.
30
ABODE AUG.indd 30
Fall 2016 Nora Al Shaikh
7/24/16 11:49 AM
ABODE: Do you feel there is a gap in the fashion market in Jeddah? If so, what do you think it may be? I can’t speak specifically of Jeddah, but in the Gulf, in general, we still have a lot of work to do in terms of convincing local retailers that a Saudi designer can produce designs that are just as desirable and compelling as those of their Western counterparts. We’re only now beginning to see that shift in perception taking place. One of the ways I’ve been able to do that is through selling directly to clients through my website as well as clothes that are not only modern but also reflect the lifestyle of women in the region.
ABODE: Being a young and contemporary Saudi woman yourself, how do you feel the style of Saudi women has evolved in the last five years? Saudi has always had a very rich and vibrant fashion scene though it’s not something the Western media often sees, and I’m continually inspired by the inventive ways young women update traditional forms of dress in unexpected ways. For my recent Resort collection, I created a hooded abaya in graphic prints and it's been a bestseller. I’ve also created other modern versions of the traditional abaya, which reflect a desire amongst young women to experiment with new cuts and fabrics.
ABODE: What is next for Nora Al Shaikh as a brand? As a designer, my philosophy has been to steadily grow my business in ways that are sustainable. I would like to gradually expand the line to include accessories, but at the right time and in a thoughtful manner. I’m also looking to organise more trunk shows in the future in different cities around the world.

SKINspiration for summer in Doha
Fresh and radiant-looking skin is what most of us try to achieve on a daily basis but pulling off dewy skin without it looking greasy is harder than it seems. Que our beauty editor Sharice who gives us the inside scoop on how to successfully put your best face forward. an
Begin with skin
eT ric Sha
The rocky road to dewy skin starts with you. You can apply as much makeup as you want, but if your skin is dry and dull, you won’t get the dewy result you’re aiming for. Thus, begin your journey to dewy with the most important part of the process, drinking lots of water and secondly, the right skincare regime. Rather than just coveting the best makeup products, you should first adopt the best skincare regime. Always follow cleansing and exfoliation with a moisturizer like La Prarie’s Illuminating Moisturizing Cream. Before applying makeup, start with a illuminating base like Chanel’s Multi-use Illuminating Base to create a natural glow to your skin.

Steps to Flawlessness
Apply a liquid or cream based highlighter, like Benefit Watt's Up Highlighter to the high points of your face — cheek bones, nose tip, cupid’s bow — then blend. To create a luminous ethereal vibe on the skin, apply a lightweight finishing powder such as Hourglass’s Ambient Lighting Powder to bring an incandescent glow to the face. This will keep your skin away from getting oily without leaving a dry and flat finish. Also try NARS’s highlighting powder and Anastasia Beverly Hills’ Illuminating Powder. Proceed with your favorite crème blush and blend it diagonally upwards from the apples of the cheeks. For extra glow, apply a highlighting powder. This will allow you to control the level of sheen more accurately. Finish your look by creating a balance with your eyes with the help of a volumizing mascara like Smashbox’s Full Exposure Mascara.

Most of us ladies find it very hard to grow out our hair here in Doha because of the drying effect of the water, the heat and the general chemicals in the water we use to shower with. Let’s take a quick look at an alternative way to beat hair thinning and lack of growth via the use of extensions that Crown Beauty, a beauty company based here in Doha, provide.
ABODE: Who is a good candidate for extensions? CB: Hair extensions are especially helpful for the many ladies who have thin hair and want to increase its volume. They are also for women who have short hair but like to have the luxury of natural looking long hair too. For the ladies who want to add colour to the hair without damaging it, our coloured extensions are the perfect addition.
ABODE: Which type of hair extension is safest to use? CB: The tape extension is the best. It's lightweight, it goes almost undetected to the touch, is great quality and twice as much hair can be added for extra volume and length.
ABODE: How should we take care of the extensions? CB: Avoid multiple uses of oils and oily conditioners on the tape itself. Only apply it on the body of the hair, not on the roots. Do not put direct heat on the tape itself as this could melt the glue and damage your hair or cause the tape to fall.

Health and fitness require more than just lifting weights and doing cardio, you'll need a positive mindset to get you at your best and to overcome those plateau's that endanger weight loss. This straightforward chat with Doha-based personal trainer Olu Bamidele will give you an overview of a short training programme that he offers that provides long-term health benefits for the body, mind and soul. 40

also a knowledge base; after three months my clients walk away with the training methods and the nutritional knowledge that will allow them to maintain and/or make improvements on their own. The first thing that amazes clients about the sessions are that they can take as little as 15 minutes, however, combined with the nutrition, this focused and targeted way of training is incredibly effective. A university study on which my program is based yielded average results of 7.5lbs (3.4kg) of fat loss and 3lbs (1.36kg) of muscle gain in just 12 consecutive days of training.
ABODE: How does the mind play an important role in staying fit and healthy?
ABODE: 58% of women the UK are considered obese and diets rarely seem to work when women decide to cut the sweets and deep fried foods. What would you say is the key to a strong and toned body? A lot of research now points towards the effectiveness of resistance training as a means of losing body fat. This is over and above aerobics and cardiovascular exercise. A strong toned body will burn more calories away from the gym performing normal everyday activities than a weak and flabby one. As we spend most of our time away from the gym at work, in the car, at home or socialising, logic dictates that the nutrition and fitness we follow should target the achievement of a strong and toned body. Resistance training is the most effective way to achieve a strong and toned body.
For success to follow from making the commitment to eat right and exercise right, the mind has a key role to play. Most people are not aware that the amount of body fat we carry is homeostatically regulated; this means that if we exercise or diet, our brains will automatically trigger processes to restore body fat levels; in a nutshell, these processes result in higher food intake or less activity away from the gym. I always emphasise the importance for my clients to imagine vividly the sense of satisfaction they will experience having achieved their ideal body. This is not just a one-off exercise but needs to be a daily practice, so much so that this new self-image becomes hardwired into the subconscious, they are then inexorably drawn towards it until it is their new reality.
ABODE: How does your program aid this?
The methods followed by Olu go beyond conventional personal training and have been used by several celebrities including Robbie Williams, who undertook a very similar exercise and nutrition program in preparation for his Let Me Entertain You 2015 tour.
The key element of my program is that it is educational in providing resistance-based routines that target every muscle in the body, and also nutritional advice that is clear and easy to follow. A three-month course provides not only an outstanding outcome for my clients but

Boulangerry Blogs Dining Outside the ABODE The clientele of a restaurant can say a lot about how authentic its food is. I’m on the constant lookout for places serving honest-to-goodness flavours that expats crave from their home country. These two eateries are usually packed to the hilt at mealtimes, which I take as a very encouraging sign, and I haven't been disappointed yet.
Central Restaurant By G
era ld T an
A surprising handful of Indonesian restaurants dot the city but the most popular can only be 'Central' in Umm Guwailina. During lunch, a variety of hot dishes populate the buffet counter, with items priced per portion. Look out for the remarkable ways tempeh (a traditional soy product originating from Indonesia) is prepared, as well as a signature fried chicken with grated coconut. The gadogado salad with peanut sauce is mandatory should it make an appearance. Come dinnertime, the menu shrinks to a few humble items encompassing classics such as barbequed meat satay, fried rice, and grilled catfish. The only caveat is the restaurant space (or lack thereof); it is quite tight and the air-conditioner isn’t exactly efficient. If the curries don’t make you sweat, the dining room just might. Central Restaurant, Ibn Mahmoud St. +974 4437 1699
Indian Coffee House I could have South Indian dosas (crepes made from fermented rice and lentils) any time of the day, but they’re available only for breakfast at the Indian Coffee House just off B-Ring road in Al Jadeeda. If you’re thinking of visiting on a weekend, I’d urge making a reservation as I’ve been caught out at least twice before with it packed out. Despite having two floors of seating, they get filled up. Still, turnover is rapid, and the proprietors will get you settled in before long. The menu is neatly organised into various sub-cuisines including Keralan specialities, tandoori dishes, vegetarian options and even Chinese favourites with an Indian spin. Whether you’re in the mood for a snack comprising of street food chat or a feast to feed an army, this friendly hangout has you covered. Indian Coffee House, Ibn Al Arqam St. +974 4444 0902

in a cooler environment, making you feel like you're dining alfresco style. For added leisure, enjoy the relaxing piano music repertoire which creates harmony and eases the day's stress. The first thing that strikes me about the indoor garden is the sleek design and the perfect ambience very softly lit for a relaxed dinner. Most poignant about my dining experience was the level of service I received; Thor, the restaurant manager, and each member of staff who served me possessed a level of professionalism that’s rarely found. Their presence at the table, their knowledge and general demeanour was of the highest standard.
Hunters Room and Grill is the signature grill restaurant at the hotel which offers an upscale, contemporary spin on grills, meat cuts and fish specialities. This grill house features refined and minimalist dĂŠcor such as leather seats, dark wood tables and hardwood floors. The restaurant also has an open kitchen for guests to watch the chefs as they prepare the succulent steaks. This elegant, but no-frills atmosphere leaves the cuisine to command centre stage and for discerning steak lovers, there can be no other choice.
I started with the appetisers first - which came in the form of delicious Beef Carpaccio. Thinly sliced beef is draped over Parmesan shavings and fresh mushrooms with a salad as a base. A light yet fragrant truffle vinaigrette is used to compliment the different flavours.
Don't miss the secret indoor garden where you can escape the heat and experience the garden with natural daylight
For mains, I ordered the best option on the menu - the Australian Tenderloin Black Angus steak. I was very impressed

Mouth-watering desserts followed, with three sublime dishes coming out, one after the other. I am ashamed to admit it but I finished all three! First came the Vanilla Parfait -one scoop of vanilla ice cream topped with a layer of biscuits and a healthy serving of seasonal mixed berries. The second delicious sweet dish was the hot Vanilla Creme Brulee that was perfectly done. The last option was the Tiramisu which, combined with a rich scoop of creamy coffee ice cream, topped off the night in spectacular fashion.
All thanks are owed to Chef Bulent Canbolat - his passion for food was felt and tasted in every single dish I had the pleasure of savoring. Chef Bulent says “I believe that good food is about cooking fresh and serving fresh while focusing on presentation. My time at the restaurant eventually had to come to an end, but not before I stole a few more mouthfuls of the delicious desserts and bid farewell to all of the staff who attended to my every need. Thank you, Hunters Room and Grill, for a wonderful meal, I thoroughly enjoyed every moment.

with the special selection of steak knives brought around the table, giving me the option of various knives depending on the order. In my opinion, this is a very personalized way of interacting with the staff and I was very surprised by this gesture. AUSTRIA

Situated on the banks of the Danube River and the capital city of Austria, Vienna is not only the birthplace of famed composer Johann Strauss, painter Gustav Klimt and even infamous royal Marie Antoinette, but it also remains the epicentre of old-world culture and that fin de siècle intellectualism. Today, because of an influx of students and aspiring architects, Vienna is bursting with youthful energy in contrast to its glorious baroque and medieval surroundings. A harmonious ‘coming together’ of history and what is ripe to blossom. Vienna, Austria−jot it down on your list of destinations!

Meet Mountaineer Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdullah Al Thani
Mount Everest is a commanding sight to be seen and is Earth's highest mountain located in the Mahalangur mountain range in Nepal and Tibet. It's a treacherous journey up to the top in which only around 4000 people have summited since Sir Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay in 1953. One of those honourable climbers is our very own Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdullah Al Thani, the first Qatari to climb Mount Everest. Since his triumphant summit of Everest in the spring of 2013, Sheikh Mohammed has gone on to conquer the seven summits, the highest mountains of each of the seven continents. After reaching such heights, one would expect this man to kick back and relax but he’s only just gotten started. In this exclusive interview our editor, Annabel, chatted with the man behind the mountain in which he reveals what it really takes to summit the world's highest mountain.
ABODE: Hi Moe! Thanks for taking time out of your schedule to chat with us. How are you physically feeling after your successful Denali (North America’s highest mountain) climb you just completed? Physically I feel good and have recovered from the climb and am back to my routine. It's such a great feeling having completed Denali as it was the last summit for me to complete the seven Summits Challenge.
ABODE: What type of physical training did you have to undergo to prepare for this type of gruelling challenge? Training was quite strenuous, especially for summits such as Aconcagua, Denali and Everest. I would train an average of three hours a day, seven
days a week. My training was mostly in the Altitude Gym at Sharjah Golf & Shooting Club. There is an altitude chamber there which helps a lot. I did weight training, cardio and cross fit. I also used to swim, run on the track as well as train in the desert. I also got a lot of training from each mountain I climbed which I then used whenever needed on other mountains.
ABODE: As the altitude inevitably rises, how does your body handle the change? The reason why it takes time to climb a high mountain is due to the body needing to adapt to the low levels of oxygen as the altitude rises. Typically on a high mountain, we would go up and down in rounds just to get our bodies used to the altitude and the new levels of oxygen. So
60
ABODE AUG.indd 60
7/24/16 11:51 AM
moving from one camp to another would sometimes take three to four days as we would go and come back. Breathing techniques are also very important, and I learnt a method called "pressure breathing" which works really well. I would also make sure I am adequately hydrated.
ABODE: What goes through your mind when things don’t go to plan on the way up? Have you had any scary moments up there 1000’s of feet above sea level? I mostly had to learn the art of patience the hard way. When the weather deteriorates, we are stuck for days, sometimes weeks at a time and so patience is the only thing you have when your so high up.
ABODE: Can you try to describe the feeling of summiting your first mountain and the six that followed? It feels the same every time. I feel absolute elation, as though I've won the Olympic Gold, seven times!
ABODE: Who founded the group ‘Arabs with Altitude’? Can you tell us a bit about the members? The group started in 2009 with three members, Raed Zidan (first Palestinian man to scale the seven summits), Masoud Mohammad (first Iranian man to scale the seven summits), and myself (first Qatari to scale the seven summits), but we didn’t have a name. In 2011, Ali Jaber and Ziad Al Sharabi joined the group, where the latter came up with the name while we were on one of the trips. Suzanne Al Houby (first Arab woman and Palestinian to scale the seven summits), also join the group at a later stage.
ABODE: What inspired you to climb Mount Everest?
YOU DON’T HAVE TO BE GREAT TO START BUT YOU HAVE TO START TO BE GREAT.
It all started on a safari in Nepal where the guide pointed out Mount Everest and said “that’s the highest peak in the world, but you can’t reach it” I took that as a challenge and set it as one of my goals in life and worked hard to achieve it. Once I set a goal for myself, that’s it! I do everything I can to achieve it. It is just the way I am.
ABODE: How has it changed your view of the world? I appreciate every little thing in life many people take for granted. A comfortable bed, clean drinking water, even a toilet seat! It really is the little things in life that matter.
ABODE: What’s next for you Moe? You said on Instagram that visiting the top seven beaches in the world is on your list as well as a book? Confirm our hopes!
The beaches is a must this summer! It's going to be a well-deserved holiday after having spent 28 days on Denali last May, and returning on the first day of Ramadan, I need to sit back and relax. As for the book, it is also something I would like to do, but when is still not known yet. I still have many things I want to do which will make the book more interesting!

ABODE: What is the story behind your showcase in the Carr d' Artistes in Seoul, South Korea? Aside from prestige, how important it is being included in the exhibition? Exhibiting in the Carre d’ Artistes is a huge milestone for me in my journey as an artist. I had been dreaming of this moment, this opportunity to be able to display my creations not only in India and across the Middle East, but in other parts of the world; wherever art enthusiasts, admirer & critics appreciate my work. After rounds of meetings, finally, Carre d’ Artistes gave me the chance of a lifetime. The institution has always believed in the value of arts in society and has provided a channel for budding and promising artists from all parts of the world.
ABODE: Which subjects do you most like drawing? Through a series of explorations and experimentation I paint nature, flowers, portraits and graphics. It has become my source of inspiration as it widens my thought for art. Nature has broadened my wings of creativity. So, whenever I have the itch to draw, I grab my tools and my canvas and head outside to where it’s all happening. I also love painting abstractly.
ABODE: You are an associate artist in Souq Waqif Art Center in Doha. Please tell us more about that? I am proud to say that Souq Waqif Art Center is a dedicated institution and promotes Arts and Culture in a commendable way. It is an institution that gives freedom to explore and put various faces and phases of life into art pieces. ‘THE BEGINNING’ COMPOSED BY DANA ALFARDAN, ANNOUNCED AS THE OFFICIAL THEME SONG FOR HAMAD INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT Dana Alfardan, a distinguished Qatari composer and songwriter, was recently recognised at the HIA Airport Stakeholders Appreciation Dinner at The St. Regis Doha, with the announcement that her song, ‘The Beginning’, will be Hamad International Airport’s (HIA) official theme music. The event, also titled ‘The Beginning’, highlighted HIA’s journey over the years, including its official inauguration as well as the launch of the official music theme. The music for ‘The Beginning’ was composed by Dana Alfardan, founder of DNA Records, Qatar’s first homegrown record label that is based in both Doha and London, with the musical piece performed by the Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra (QPO) in front of the iconic Lamp Bear at HIA as well as next to the airport’s runway.
THE ONE REACHES OUT IN RAMADAN For the third year running, THE One Qatar team reached out to their community during Ramadan, by distributing Iftar parcels from their local warehouse to workers living in staff accommodation nearby. While the team produced 1,000 food packages in the first year of this initiative, they increased that to 1,500 last year. Finding that not even this was enough, they decided to produce an amazing 2,000 Iftar parcels this year! In the Ramadan spirit of generosity, every single staff member of THE One Qatar once again donated one full day of their salary towards this initiative. Together with THE One’s Qatar Restaurant team, they also volunteered their time by planning, buying and putting together the food packages, each containing a piece of chicken, rice, bread, water, juice and fruit.
