EDITOR IN CHIEF's L E T T E R Dear readers, December is a very important month for Qatar and we are proud to bring you our special festive issue full of fun ideas for the holidays. With Qatar National Day on the horizon, we wanted to take the time to pay tribute to some of the highly accomplished people who have contributed to making Qatar great again this year. We must start by acknowledging the tireless efforts of His Highness, The Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani, His Highness Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani and Her Highness Sheikha Moza bint Nasser for their dedication in raising our great nation up at the world stage. Through their vision for education, peace, health care and diplomacy, we as Qataris are proud to call them our leaders and may we all strive to uphold the National Vision of 2030 set forth by them. Our countrymen and women, Team Qatar, excelled at the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games and set a precedent for us, acting as an inspiration for our youth and elderly alike by winning two silver medals. Thanks to the incredible performances of Abdelrahman Abdelqader and Sara Masoud, each took home Qatar’s first ever Paralympic medals after an incredibly difficult shot put final in September, clearing the way for a space in the history books. The dazzling Dhow Festival recently came to an end for another year, giving us a unique glimpse into old-school Qatari life and reminding us just how rich our culture and history is. Among the many newly-opened institutions in Qatar is Sidra Medical and Research Center. Arguably the most important opening this year, the highly-efficient facility is testament to our continual growth in the health sector, highlighting our intense focus on keeping our people fit and healthy. It has also been an incredibly successful year for us here at ABODE magazine. We have been through many positive changes over the years and 2016 was no different. I am proud to say how much the aesthetic of our publication has improved, we have elevated our prestige and increased our positioning in the market, easily rivalling the best magazines in Qatar. On my final note, I would like to wish you a wonderful Qatar National Day and express my deepest pride in Qatar as a nation. I hope you all have a wonderful festive season and if you may be travelling, be safe, have fun and I will see you in 2017.

I try to keep my style simple yet elegant giving utmost importance to the comfort aspect of the attire. Alexandria, and Buenos Aires. Georges Vuitton passed away in 1936 and left control of the luxury label to his son, GastonLouis Vuitton. Under yet another period of positive management, Louis Vuitton continued to evolve: the Keepall bag, the Noe bagwhich was originally designed to carry champagne- the Speedy, and cylindrical Papillon were all incepted prior to the 1950s, and yet, continue to generate sizeable revenues for the Louis Vuitton label to date. A successful merger between Current Creative Moet et Chandon, Hennessy Director of Louis Vuitton, Nicolas and Louis Vuitton resulted Ghesquière in the birth of the LVMH luxury holding in 1987. This groundbreaking venture saw Vuitton’s profits increase by more than 50% in one year as the brand became present in over 130 stores worldwide, including China, by the early 1990s. In 1997, under the helm of Marc Jacobs– the house’s first-ever creative director- the brand ventured into introducing men’s and women’s Ready-to-wear collections. Speaking of his plans for his

new role, Jacobs told Vogue at the time: "What I have in mind are things that are deluxe but that you can also throw into a bag and escape town with because Louis Vuitton has a heritage in travel.” Jacobs even reinvented the iconic monogram canvas by putting a graffiti spin on it with designer Stephen Sprouse in 2001. The new design gave the merchandise a fresh vibe, which appealed to a younger international audience. Thanks to Jacobs’ infectious star power, celebrities became obsessed with Louis Vuitton: names including Bono, Sean Connery, Catherine Deneuve, Christy Turlington, Diane Kruger, Scarlett Johanssen and Jennifer Lopez have all collaborated with the brand in one way or another over the years. Leading international celebrities sat front row every time Marc Jacobs took the stage in Paris to present another successful Readyto-wear collection. Under Jacobs' watchful eyes, Louis Vuitton celebrated its 150th anniversary with new store openings in New York, Sao Paulo, Mexico City, Johannesburg, Shanghai, and Cancun. The iconic Champs Elysees store was even given a revamp in commemoration of this incredible milestone and a new collection of Speedy watches was on display to greet eager shoppers. Today, Nicolas Ghesquiere heads Louis Vuitton’s women’s division- a job he has been entrusted with since November 2013. And although the label suffers from a chain of international counterfeiting that literally spans the globe, Louis Vuitton remains the world’s most valuable luxury label, with a brand value of over 25 billion dollars. Whatever Louis Vuitton designs- past, present, and future- it is sure to tell a story of travel: a story of a young teenager who dreamt big and never looked back.

IZAAK AZANEI Fur The Love Of The Game
IZAAK AZANEI is an emerging British label specialising in contemporary cashmere-blend knitwear and accessories with fur detailing. Founded in London in 2014 by sisters Karishma, Roshni and Deeya Khemlani, the brand was born out of a desire to fill the gap in the market for an aspirational and affordable fur brand with a versatile aesthetic more in line with todays urban chic. With backgrounds in business from the London School of Economics and fashion studies from Parsons School of Design in New York, they set out to create a line of fur-detailed closet staples, both real and faux, revamping the classic silhouettes found in every woman's wardrobe. Heavily influenced by contemporary culture and the urban flair of London's Soho district and New York's TriBeCa, the designers seek to create elevated essentials that combine raw elegance with an effortless cool, taking you seamlessly from day to night. Through active involvement as members of The British Fur Trade Association, the designers have spent time studying innovative techniques, further enhanced through work experience with renowned British furrier Rebecca Bradley. What results is a collection of lightweight wardrobe essentials that are luxurious yet trans-seasonal and can be worn across continents occasions and styles. The brand has garnered significant media appraisal, celebrated internationally by leading social media outlets and has been spotted on some of the world's most renowned style muses including Olivia Palermo, Chiara Ferragni and Fouz Alfahad. Izaak Azanei's lastet collection will be available online in February at www.izaakazanei.com and in stores at Stars Avenue Mall, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia

CHINA’S FASHION INDUSTRY

A Report On Growth

Shanghai Fashion Week

hina’s fashion staging is changing. For decades, fashion has been cloaked in its own cultural suture, with freedom of expression and creativity low on the agenda. Individuality, much of what fashion has long signified, was always shunned in favour of falling in line and blending in. "For many generations, we Chinese were not encouraged to think creatively," says Angelica Cheung, Editor-in-Chief of Vogue China, "so there's a certain element of truth to say that the Chinese were not great designers.” But Ms. Cheung is at the forefront of change. She is probably the most powerful ‘unknown’ driver in the international fashion movement today. "This generation of designers were educated in China and educated in the West, so they understand both ways of thinking. They start to have ideas - and the Chinese learn very quickly,” added Cheung. Her own magazine typifies this with its rapid surge in popularity over the past 10 years. Recent socio-political and market shifts have been the catalyst for this change and where Chinese fashion was once in the shadows, bright shards of creative light strike into the industry with some of the strongest craftsmanship and business savvy lineage in the world powering it. According to Hung Huang, publisher, author, blogger and founder of fashion boutique 'Brand New China', the
Chinese “have already experienced products coming from the West, and now are becoming more curious about their own heritage again.” Aligned with this movement, the market for fashion in China is growing at an exponential rate. It is the largest mass fashion market on earth and with a population of 1.4 billion, has the largest potential consumer market for the fashion industry. Overall, the high-end domestic fashion market in China is dominated by overseas brands such as Burberry, Prada, Louis Vuitton, Chanel and Armani but it also has an insatiable appetite for mass fashion. It is, however, increasingly becoming less about quantity and more about quality in 2016. The big trends are in the luxury and high-end markets and couture pieces are at the top of the fashion agenda. Furthermore, government policy to stimulate domestic demand has enlarged the market and opened the door for the development of the industry thus encouraging breakout designers and product diversity. With increasing product knowledge and surging purchasing power, mainland consumers in China are developing higher demands across the industry. Within the metropolises of the country, a bubbling fashion army is occurring. Above 45% of the people in the big cities like Beijing,

Shanghai and Guangzhou now consider themselves to be carving out their ‘own style’ and not simply following the trends. Consumers are also interestingly switched on to labels that consider environmental and health implications too. Inclined to buy garments made of natural fibres in support of the green revolution, this is a curve that much of the West is only now catching onto. As well as this social awareness awakening, Chinese consumers seem to have a greater eagerness to rediscover their own culture. Traditional crafts like embroidery and needlework outshine much of the highly acclaimed work in Europe - it's just been a matter of getting them seen on the global stage, until now. Already shifting to more value-added products with a focus on expertise, more and more Chinese clothing manufacturers are now aiming to create their own brands. This has opened up huge opportunities for international designers and clothing labels to collaborate with local manufacturers. Chinese manufacturers have the added advantage of having a self-owned and well-controlled powerful supply chain, and retail channels are now able to acquire information on future trends in colour, textiles and trends in advance which add an edge when collaborating with international design houses to create their own collections.
Guo Pei
Masha Ma is one of a new wave of fashion designers to emerge from China in recent years. She was born in Beijing and studied at Central Saint Martins in London. She is quite the character and tends to go against the stereotypical grain. "When I was born, there was no dragon or phoenix carpet anywhere. It was after the Cultural Revolution and everybody dressed all the same, regardless of social status." She is convinced that the new group can innovate in ways that can blur cultural boundaries. “Is it China? Is it not China? And that's what makes it modern." Designer Alexander McQueen's theatrical fashion shows inspired Masha Ma and just like the relentless contribution to fashion that McQueen made, she and many other rising stars of the Chinese design scene agree that a lot of time, effort and experience will be required to develop a style that can make headway on a global stage. Cynics of this emerging new confidence are questioning whether Chinese designers are designing for the Chinese or for international recognition, though, and they have a point. Although we are yet to see the Chinese equivalent of Prada or Chanel, these young designers are motivated to hush the haters and drive a new, creative and original design concept.

And, what’s interesting now is that whilst Western brands have dominated the market for years, their dominance is now being expertly challenged by the growing fashion set in China. Chinese designers are finding great support in the country from public opinion and also influential figures such as China’s first lady, Peng Liyuan. New technologies are also revolutionising the way fashion retailers and designers are running their businesses. Step forward e-commerce and social media. With 568 million internet users in China, Chinese consumers are increasingly used to buying online. “The year 2013 will be remembered as the one in which China surpassed the U.S.A. as the world’s largest digital retail market,” wrote the author of a report released by Bain & Company noting the country's 242 million e-shoppers. This changing market landscape suggests new opportunities, especially for breakout designers. These designers managed to attract a huge customer base and even establish their own labels solely through e-commerce platform Taobao.com. Chinese Fashion designer LIU Min who received a bachelor’s degree in women’s wear from the London College of Fashion in 2001, and then moved on to an internship with Viktor & Rolf in Amsterdam before returning to China in 2009, launched her brand Ms Min on Taobao. She is one of a handful of Chinese designers that has made a success of selling high-end fashion on this platform, as most users are price conscious. Jack Ma, founder of e-commerce juggernaut Alibaba, summed up this phenomenon saying: “In other countries, e-commerce is a way to shop, in China, it is a lifestyle”. Since mainstream media is heavily regulated in China and is therefore not seen as a reliable source, more and more consumers have turned to social media to find style inspiration. A Chinese blogging platform like Sina Weibo may well be the perfect place for global and local fashion brands to test and learn what resonates with their Chinese internet fan base. In the meantime, social media has created a group of fashion bloggers
ABODE DECEMBER 2016.indd 43
who have been considered ahead-of-the-curve influencers. One just has to look at the success of Frankie Han. An international blogging behemoth with a very individual style sense and opinion, his followers hang on his every word. Now a respected designer and editor at Marie Claire China, social media brought him to the global stage. This new generation of Chinese fashion warriors is driving the culture to the catwalks, stores and streets, and are staples at international launches, runway shows and all major events on the fashion calendar. Approaching its 20th anniversary next year, China Fashion Week gives voice and exposure to the major players and rising stars in the industry, and also boosts international relevance. Events like Beijing Fashion Week are also helping put new work on the news pages, blogs and social media feeds of the young and influential. Chinese fashion is even starting to earn its place in the tight-knit world of haute couture with forward thinking visionaries such as designer Guo Pei leading the way. Remember THAT yellow dress which Rihanna stepped out in at the 2015 MetGala? Case in point. This bold and wistful approach to design truly exemplifies Chinese high fashion today. Not for the mainstream and with a 'love it or hate it' appeal, whether you do love it or hate it - it makes an undeniable impact and gets Chinese fashion trending. And this is the strategic approach of such upcoming designers. Like any good campaign, it's all about sparking discussion. With all of the opportunity the Chinese fashion market offers, it also comes with a lot of challenges. Everything from regulation on imports and textiles to language and cultural barriers, fierce competition and intellectual property wars all play their part in this furiously fast system not for the fashion faint hearted. What is clear is that Chinese shoppers are becoming sophisticated and discerning. They are now at the forefront of their own style innovation and with the desire for authenticity and a modernization of their culture, China's fashion industry has no plans to slow down.

A VERY MODERN
ISAIA MAN
A
s a protagonist of a life of luxury, the ISAIA man is successful, is able to make decisions but also have fun and who wants to discover new and exciting emotions. He cares about his appearance and puts priority in feeling comfortable in every moment of his day. He is a man that defies mass definitions and stereotypical clichés- he is not a follower of trends but rather has a personal, sophisticated and refined, yet casual, style. Let’s say he is the gentleman of his generation, mindful even of the smallest details. The continuous pursuit of detail, the originality of shapes and colours, the refined fabrics combined with the made in Italy (actually Made in Napoli) production all makes for a desirable collection. The ISAIA Fall/Winter 2016 collection is dedicated to the 25th anniversary of the Casalnuovo-based company on the international market. The emblematic element that fully represents the message conveyed is the classic herringbone motif used as a pattern and a weave and also as a signature detail on all the items of the ISAIA winter collection. This type of motif, which was quite popular in the 70s, has been reinterpreted and faithfully reproduced and directly inspired by the original fabrics of the time found through careful research. For this reason, the collection is called Coral Herringbone. A little bit narcissistic, a little bit Peter Pan-ish, the ISAIA man loves to be recognised and has no fear to be noted, he’s unequivocally stylish, rational but also irreverent and searches continuously for the beauty life has to offer. He lives with passion and emotion, he dresses ISAIA. Discover the latest collection at www.isaia.it

FOOL-PROOF PALETTES
Stuck on which colours compliment which? Always opt for an eyeshadow palette. Trios or quads are a fool-proof way to ace your shadows. Earthy tones complement brown eyes (try the Givenchy Palette Ors Audacieux, QR 259 at Wojooh) while warm neutrals with a shimmery lighter shade (try Dior's 5-Colour Eyeshadow pallette, QR 226 at Sephora) combined with blue eyes make for a perfect harmony.
GAME OF GOLD
All set and ready to head out? Not without a spritz of body glitter you aren't. It adds a touch of glam, a hint of sensuality and a whole lotta fabulosity! NARS's Monoi Body Glow (QR 215 at Sephora) should do the trick.

FESTIVE GLITTER
MAKEUP FOR EVER Glitter Pigment QR 110
"If anything goes wrong, apply glitter!. That present-day quote isn't passed around for no reason. Glitter is to glam as red is to sexy- it's an essential part of any night on the town. With endless choices available, you can go for cream, powder, liquid or gel- all with the same sparkle of glitter. Lashings of Makeup For Ever's Glitter Pigment (QR 110 at Sephora) and dashes of Urban Decay's Heavy Metal Glitter (QR 99 also at Sephora) is just the ticket.

SHINE BRIGHT
To boost the shine in your hair, lightly spritz it with some oil (try Ouai Hair Oil, QR 102 at Sephora) before and after styling to keep your locks glossy throughout the night. Opt for a scented one for that extra touch of glamour.

LASH POWER
A pair of fluttering false lashes makes all the difference. Take your time in choosing the right shape, length and volume of lashes for your eyes. Another thing to take into consideration is the glue you're using to apply. Make sure you apply and remove them properly to keep the lashes in good condition- they're always good to use more than a few times if kept clean. You can't go wrong with Huda Beauty's lashes in 'Scarlett' (QR 185 at Sephora).
THE RULE OF RED
With Yves Saint Laurent's classic 'Rouge Pur Couture Lipstick' (QR 212 at Sephora) and OPI's 'The Impossible' (QR 49 at Al Nazih), it doesn't take much else for you to be looking your best. Simplify the road to glam and invest in the power colour. Not only does it get you into the holiday spirit but it also gets you feeling a sexier version of you!
HEAT WAVE
What better way to wear your hair than in soft glamorous waves for the season. Divide your hair into sections and lightly curl your locks in an alternate direction to make it look naturally elegant. The GHD 'Soft Curl Iron' (QR 759 at www.ghdhair.com) will do the trick. GHD Soft Curl Iron QR 759
FRAGRANCE FOCUS
No look is complete without a captivating scent. Make sure to pair your parfum with your dress of the evening- an LBD? Dolce & Gabbana's 'Dolce Rosa Excelsa' (QR 534 at Blue Salon) has got you covered. Don't forget to slip the bottle into your clutch (it's small, we promise) to keep you fresh all night.

THE MUSE OF ARABIAN BEAUTY Joelle Mardinian

ABODE DECEMBER 2016.indd 60
11/24/16 1:40 PM
Joelle Mardinian is one of those women whose charm, enigmatic aura and wit have warmed hearts in the Arab world and it's only charismatic ladies like her who could keep her audience captivated as she does. With the soaring success of MBC’s TV show 'Joelle', her own beauty salon and cosmetic clinic “Clinica Joelle” as well as being ambassador of Pantene, she is an icon to behold. Let's get to know more about this Arabian beauty muse, Joelle Mardinian.
ABODE: Joelle, it's great to see you again since we last interviewed you a year ago, how have you been? I am good, thank you and very glad about how things have shaped up since our last interview. Everything that I dreamt of and planned has been a success. We've just launched the branch of Maison de Joelle in France for Joelle Paris, we also just recently launched our 'J Glow' and 'So Cool' range. Clinica Joelle is also coming up in two big places, Riyadh and Kuwait. It's a lot of work but I am always finding new ways to grow.
ABODE: Which product do you feel is missing in the beauty industry in the Gulf? The countries in the Gulf are usually the first to bring in the latest products in hair, skincare and makeup. We can find anything we want in the market, with great prices and almost very easily can be bought by anyone. Another thing about the beauty industry, there is something new every day. We can’t really say what is missing but I am certain that there is always a demand for beauty products in general.
Saudi, I have realised that these women always take care of their appearance and work towards it. I love being close to my customers in the Gulf region because they give me immense strength, love and the confidence to achieve more.
ABODE: You've recently launched a new range of products– So Cool and J Glow. Tell us about this? I love these additions to the Joelle Paris range! J Glow is a multitasking skin treatment and a complete daily skincare routine that comprises of a face wash, facial toner and balancer, and a facial balancing cream. The products are made with the most natural and soft ingredients. The So Cool range encourages a luminous complexion with or without makeup. It comprises of three products and leaves you feeling clean, refreshed and hydrated whether it is the summer or winter.
ABODE: What is your dream for Maison de Joelle, Clinica Joelle and Joelle Paris? I want to make it grow and I want my brands to be for all women. Personally speaking, I cannot imagine my life without my kids- my family are my everything and my goal forever remains to raise them well and to give them everything that they could wish for. I call myself a dreamer and I am thankful to

It is pretty simple. I use the fivestep skincare from Joelle Paris. Firstly I start my day with the 'Wash Away' foam and then followed by my 'Good Day' cream. HEALTHY SNACKS
FOR THE HOLIDAYS
W
ith the winter holidays quickly approaching, many of us are looking forward to festive gatherings with family and friends that are a hallmark of the festive season. Lovely decorations, music, and of course, delicious food all make December one of the most anticipated times of the year. But with all the teas, brunches, and parties offering delectable treats, it can be a challenge to stay healthy. So for this holiday season, allow yourself the odd splurge but also give your body the gift of health and explore festive snack foods that taste great and are also good for you.

Coat with olive oil and the spices of your choice then place in the dehydrator and voila! A tasty, healthy snack, that’s guaranteed to be a crowd-pleaser. Store in a cool, dry place in an airtight container and these snacks will stay fresh for months to come. Enjoy! a recent resurgence in popularity- and for good reason. Dehydrating food is a healthy and cost-effective way to preserve fresh foods while creating wholesome and delicious snacks for the entire family. Dehydrators work by very slowing removing moisture over a long period of time at an extremely low temperature, concentrating all the flavours and nutrients into one delicious, crunchy, and low-calorie treat. Especially good for fruits and vegetables, dehydrating preserves nutritional value while maintaining all the original vitamins and minerals that might otherwise be lost if cooked at a higher temperature. These foods are also lightweight and easy to transport, so they’re great for travelling, taking on outings like picnics or for school lunches, not to mention as delicious snacks for the aforementioned holiday parties.

A HEALTHY BOOST for the
Season A
STICK TO YOUR REGULAR EATING ROUTINE. Don’t stop eating your three regular meals with snacks in between. Plan your celebrations and meals carefully. If you're having a big lunch time party, stick to a light breakfast, but make sure you have one, as this will fill you enough so that you don’t load up unnecessarily from the bread basket and pastry display, but will leave you with enough room for a tasty and indulgent meal. In the same vein, if you're gathering with friends and family for an evening meal, ensure sure you make healthy, balanced choices throughout the day, DON’T starve yourself and earn that special menu item you’ve been looking forward to. START AN EXERCISE REGIME. December is the perfect time to get active. Whether you wake up a little earlier to go for a walk to watch the sunrise in the cool breeze or head to the gym on your lunch break for a gym session, your body will thank you. This extra activity in your daily routine will also make you more likely to pass on that third helping of icecream because you don’t need food to improve your mood, the endorphins from your exercise will be just the ticket! SHOP - A LOT
The recommended amount of steps to take a day to maintain a healthy lifestyle is 10,000. Just four hours of non-stop shopping on foot are enough to cover this 10 000 step quota. Bring along +974 5040 3234
your children to keep you on your toes and to get them away from the PlayStation. Plan where you will have lunch and what time. Shopping is exhausting stuff and if you wait until you are starving, chances are the quick fix that McDonald's provides will win out over the grilled veggies and salad every time.
MEET UP WITH FRIENDS FOR A BEACHSIDE WALK. Rather than always planning a meal or night out to catch up with friends, rather meet up on the Corniche or even better, on the beach itself, for a sunset stroll. After an hour or two of catching up on all the latest gossip, with the breeze in your hair and sand between your toes, you’ll have gotten in a decent workout and will probably have downed a bottle of water!
5. HONE YOUR COOKING SKILLS Eating out is great the whole year round, but over the festive season, home is where the magic really happens. Spending time with loved ones is what this time of year is all about. The best part about cooking up a storm in your own home is that you control the calories. Give yourself time to come up with a unique menu, maybe trying out recipes you’ve been too tired, or too hot, to try all year. Invite friends round and ask each to bring ingredients for a themed evening. Only healthy options allowed! Fresh and tasty options = all of the flavours, none of the regrets! Have competitions for the yummiest and healthiest plate. The festivities don’t just revolve around eating, but around preparing the feasts as well. After all is said and done, the festive season only happens once a year, and you’ve earned yourself a wonderful month after all your dedication to your health this year. Don’t throw away all that hard work for the sake of apple pie and cream. It’s not worth it. Get up, get active, make friends and good life choices- and prepare your body for a brilliant 2017.

s the temperatures drop to almost bearable, spirits rise and decorations start going up, it’s becoming blatantly clear that the festive season is near approaching. Regardless of what this season means to your culture, one aspect about December which spreads the divide is that it is the month of over indulgence and under activity. Here are just a handful of tips to ensure you have your best December yet.

LA MER BISTRO ALL IS NEW
Doha lies the all new La Mer Bistro which is the essence of a traditional French Bistro. It is a comfortable, dynamic and casual yet elegant social setting surrounded by the panoramic view of the Doha Skyline. A perfect venue to gather and dine where everything is set to try a large number of authentic French flavours at an affordable price. Writing about my experience arriving on the 23rd floor. My husband accompanied me and when we walked through the candlelit corridor with mirrors, the eye-catching entrance struck us. Elegantly, the menu was written on the mirrors and with an excelled jazz duo playing harmonious tunes, we knew we had arrived at an exceptional restaurant and were excited at what was to come. We arrived with high expectations of which were totally satisfied. We chose to settle at a table beside a high window, which provided incredible views of The Pearl-Qatar, continuing all the way across West Bay Lagoon. Onto the food, we were very spoiled. We started with some refreshmentsthe best one being the apple mint that has a very distinct taste making you feel fresh and ready to begin the courses we had yet to taste. And then we were served hors d'oeuvres which looked like small bites and consisted of an aubergine tapenade, quiche Lorraine, gougeres, pissaladiere, duck rillettes and veal and chicken liver pate. These delicious dishes were a delicious start to our meal and made us eager for what was to come. The next was the Salade Maraichere au Chevre Chaud, a mix of lettuce, warm goats cheese on toast with herbes de provence atop. For the mains, the Confit de Canard- duck leg confit with potato and the Joues de boeuf -were recommended by the lovely team. They were perfectly right. Both dishes had incredibly tender meat- the duck meat was cooked for 24 hours in its own fats, and the beef cheeks melted in our mouths. Even the potato gratin on the side of the duck confit was made to perfection with creamy layers covered by a crisp top, and the orange sauce balanced the flavours and added a sweet touch to the duck. All of our mains were simply fabulous, however, the main dish that won my heart, was the steak frites which is grilled rib eye steak with garlic parsley butter and for the sides were some asparagus and French fries. The steak was juicy and tender, cooked to perfection.
We were so full by the time we had a surprise of gratin de fruits de mer- a dish which should be eaten in a specific way to taste the best of it. One should have a spoon of the rice pilaf with one spoon from the seafood gratin, all flavours merged together perfectly. Shortly before we lay our spoons down in protest, we were served strawberry melba- a glass of vanilla ice cream with strawberry sorbet and a very light cream on the top. The chocolate mousse was incredibly smooth and rich with flavour and proved to be another classic dish with a touch of elegance. The food at La Mer was stunning, showcasing superlative cooking and incredible ingredients. I can`t forget to mention how courteous, knowledgeable and professional the staff were. They checked on us throughout each course, the service was exemplary and exceeded our expectations. All in all, it was a wonderful evening with classic French cuisine I would highly recommend La Mer Bistro to all diners wishing to have a taste of France, thousands of miles away from home. La Mer Bistro are open weekdays from 5 p.m. – 12 a.m. and weekends from 5 p.m. – 1 a.m. Closed on Sundays DINER ENTRE AMIS at La Mer Bistro Every second Wednesday of the month, all can enjoy a convivial dinner sharing concept where all the food and beverages are served family style to share. The food theme changes every month and represents a typical Bistro meal like Mussel Night with fries, Entrecote Night with walnut salad, Cheese Night – cheese based traditional dishes, Quenelle Night and more. Wednesdays, 7:00 pm to 11:00 pm. Special set menus and selected drinks APERITIF A LA FRANCAISE at La Mer Bistro All can celebrate the weekend in a French Bistro style by indulging into authentic French aperitifs while nibbling sumptuous canapés served passed around. ISLAMORADA
Words by Francesca Cruz
Islamorada is a gem paradise comprised of six tiny clusters of islands snug in the Florida Keys. Three bodies of water surround Islamorada: the Atlantic Ocean, Florida Bay and the Gulf of Mexico. It’s located in a stretch of briny wilderness, dotted with boutique hotels and some of the world’s best seafood restaurants. It is truly a haven for a relaxed, unpretentious enclave for those travellers that enjoy beautiful sunsets, secluded beaches, fine dining, and tranquil surroundings.

Casa Morada The Lowdown: Casa Morada is Islamorada’s version of a lush paradise. This boutique hotel lined with Bismark palms and cosy paths that lead to local tropical vegetation provides its guests with a tranquil experience in the Florida Keys. The property has 16 unique suites to choose from with garden or sea views. I recommend the Starfish suite for its views of the bay and a porch area where you can kick off your sandals and enjoy the sound of swaying palms. Breakfast is included and the property is pet-friendly. The hotel is a jewel on its very own but if you include the warm, welcoming and accommodating service, it makes for an even more pleasant time to be had. Who’s it for? Single travellers, couples, families and even pets. Traveller tip: I discovered this hotel via Runway Resorts. They assisted in every detail from setting up a day of snorkelling to eco-tours; they made my stay as sweet as key lime pie (a local favourite) www.runway-resorts.com
Theater of the Sea THE LOWDOWN: Theater of the Sea is the second oldest marine mammal park in the world. Established in 1946, it is still family owned and was once a quarry that supplied rock for the construction of the Henry Flagler Overseas Railroad. Today, visitors can see stingrays up close and take in a show with sea lions; they can swim with Atlantic bottlenose dolphins or observe sharks, crocodiles, sea turtles and other forms of marine life. Take a short mini cruise on the bottomless boat, or experience a guided tour of the marinelife exhibit. Programs are available daily and include admission to the dolphin, sea lion, and parrot shows, guided marine life tour, lagoonside beach, and bottomless boat ride.

Snorkelling THE LOWDOWN: A visit to Islamorada is not complete without a sea excursion. Whether it’s an eco-excursion, a sightseeing tour, scuba diving, a glass bottom boat, snorkelling, or sunset cruises—this is where you will really experience the marvel of the Florida Keys. Charter a boat and set off with Captain Xavier Figueredo, and his owned and operated Bay & Reef Company for a day of snorkelling. Aside from a fullservice charter, and private tours, they include marine education. Opt for fishing, bird watching, or pause in a nook somewhere and set up a picnic—the captain is accommodating and will ensure you fall in love with Islamorada. WHO’S IT FOR? Everyone. TRAVELLER TIP: The captain is a walking encyclopaedia for all things nature and marine life. He’s passionate about conserving and protecting the beauty of this area, so make sure to ready your inquiring questions for him.
Marker 88 THE LOWDOWN: Looking for beachside dining, glorious sunsets, and mouthwatering seafood? Marker 88 is the restaurant for you! Opened in 1967, it’s an Islamorada landmark. A charming place for casual dining with an air of romanticism, the spot on the sand under the white canopy with views of the small wooden pier is idyllic. Aside from great fresh seafood, Marker 88 also serves up prime steaks and other options. Selections on the menu that are a must: the Ahi tuna poke; the key lime seafood pasta with lobster, shrimp, and blue crab over penne pasta, the fresh stone crabs and do not pass up on the homemade key lime pie (the owner’s mum makes it from scratch). An extra plus is the service- you’ll feel like you've pulled up to a friend’s home to enjoy a great meal. WHO’S IT FOR? Couples, individuals travelling alone, and families.

businessmen and women and couples, it is child-friendly and a wonderful place for the whole family to enjoy in style. The staff welcome and accommodation were all up to exceptional standards with staff smiling all the time as well as the service which was beyond expectation. Our butler took great care of me and responded immediately to all of my needs. The personalised Butler Service, complimentary for all the rooms and suites, is ready to welcome and meet guests' every need, from unpacking the luggage to anticipating guests' personal preferences, even prior to their arrival. The service is complimented with a bespoke concierge service that boasts in-depth knowledge of local customs, traditions and attractions. The concierge knows every must-see place around town, have exclusive access to events, and understand where to acquire the perfect gift. I stayed in a deluxe room, lavishly Arabian in style – with a balcony from which you can see the pools and the crystal blue sea. The deluxe rooms are designed for unrivalled relaxation and comfort. The serene palette of warm colours in fabrics and upholstery in each room creates a calming and ambient environment. The room was clean, well equipped and very spacious, even the bathroom was very well designed and appointed with a touch of luxury. In the hotel, you can choose from various rooms and suites whether you would like to have a private pool or an inside dining room. I was impressed with how staff paid attention to my baby girl, though- on the first day we received a special cake and sweets in the shape of her favourite characters plus a pink back bag with a colouring book and some toys to play with, she was so happy as were we. Although Marsa Malaz is an opulent stay for singles,

I enjoyed the first day on the beach having some refreshments, the sea water was warm and clear, with an incredible view and relaxing atmosphere. In the morning, breakfast was in SAWA restaurant which I like so much, with menu options plentiful with a buffet and various stations providing me with a very healthy breakfast. After the lunch, I went down to the pool area. There were different types of pools- one for the little kids, a big one for adults, another one for older kids and the one I enjoyed the most was the warm water one, I spent a large amount of my day lounging around this one- bliss. Following my relaxation time, I paid a visit to the Spa by Clarins, the first Spa by Clarins in the Middle East. The spa offers guests male and female wellness areas and 23 treatment rooms. There are a variety of massages, beauty and body treatments, as well as the Art of Touch Signature treatment from Clarins, the Marsa Malaz Signature Hammam and a number of relaxing spa packages. The relaxation areas also offer guests separate female and male saunas, steam rooms, herbal baths and indoor plunge pools. The Spa team are all well knowledgeable with all the treatments, very accommodating and they recommend which one will be the best for you to get the most out of your spa experience. My treatment of the day was the Balinese massage which I really needed. It is a medium to strong pressure massage which releases all of the stress and tension from the muscles. My therapist was very knowledgeable with the treatment and she was checking every now and then if I was ok with the pressure and if I felt good. I enjoyed my massage and went out of the Spa feeling relaxed and pampered. Lunch time came in the blink of an eye, so I headed over to Al Sufra restaurant. This Levant-inspired restaurant has a timeless charm. With a blend of traditional recipes and flavours from Lebanon, Cyprus, Syria,
Jordan and Palestine, Al Sufra follows the festivals and seasons of the Levant, celebrating them with pride and insight into the traditions of this ancient cuisine. With a coffee lounge, open terrace and a la carte dining, the restaurant can be visited any time throughout the day. I ordered some salads as a starter and then the main dish was a variety of grilled meat, chicken pieces and lamb chops, which were very juicy and tasty. I can`t forget to mention the desserts, though- the chocolate profiterole and pistachio ice cream blended and melted in the mouth. Simply delicious. Yet again, the service was excellent in Al Sufra , the staff was very professional and the place is fabulous.

The next day I had breakfast and brunch in Sawa the hotel's family-friendly restaurant. Sawa serves a blend of European and Mediterranean flavours with menus personally curated by the Executive Chef. The Sawa Brunch serves signature sweet and savoury recipes from all corners of the world. Fine live entertainment and a children's corner on the lawn are elements of the first and only Palatial Brunch experience at The Pearl. Words by Marian Nagy

Arabic calligraphy is one of the most revered and respected forms of visual arts in the Gulf. Its very nature has risen above the classical to the contemporary, showcasing unique and skilful hands and impeccable craftsmanship of the artists. Bridging the gap between past and present, as well as multi-cultural and social divergences, the art of calligraphy continues to live on. With this in mind, ABODE chats to Ammar Al Dasouki and find out how he's keeping the tradition alive.
ABODE: Ammar, you are an extremely gifted calligraphy artist. Can you tell us about yourself? Yes, I was born in Damascus, Syria, in 1972. I got my B.A. in Visual Communication from the Faculty of Fine Arts at the Damascus University. I am a member of the Qatari Society of Fine Arts and work in graphic design. I have participated in many artistic activities in Arabic Calligraphy in many countries and have been a student for many professional calligraphers, among which was the artist Walid Al-Agha. This is where I learned the latest trends in calligraphy. ABODE: What is the history of calligraphy and what do you think its importance is in our society? Talking about the history of Arabic calligraphy is truly fascinating for both the thought and the eye. Arabic Calligraphy is a creative art that is the result of Arabic and other Islamic civilisations. It is totally different from the other kinds of calligraphies. It doesn’t only focus on its main mission of conveying the meaning but transcends into an aesthetic mission. Thus, Arabic calligraphy has become an art on its own. In this regard, it owes to the Holy Quran, in which Muslims have deep faith in its and its great content. ABODE: What is calligraphy to you? Through my research in this field, I am trying to reach the far limits of the Arabic calligraphy, which is a life project and noble aim for me. In fact, Arabic calligraphy is both an art and science. If we contemplate the aesthetics of Arabic calligraphy, we can
find that it is characterised by many features including, flexibility, expandability, roundness, tangles, and structure. It is also founded on a strong relationship between calligraphy and the point circle.

ABODE: How would you say calligraphy was a relevant form of communication in today's techno world? Arabic calligraphy is eternal and will never die. There were many genius calligraphers who left their artistic masterpieces from which we are still learning and gaining insight. In my opinion, the current fast pace of technology cannot affect the calligrapher’s work. On the contrary, I am confident that many calligraphers have contributed to many fields of artistic life including graphic arts, interior design and architecture, through using their knowledge and expertise in calligraphy. ABODE: How do you plan to contribute towards the preservation of this art? With the encouragement and interest of many people, I initiated a project called “Creative House” to teach the art of Calligraphy to the younger generation. Thanks to Allah, the results were great. Then, I got invited to participate in many art centres to run workshops about Arabic calligraphy and its impact on fine arts and modern life. I was delighted to see a huge turnout for these noble projects. Eventually, this will bring back the spirit of Arabic civilisation and our ancestors’ achievements and will strengthen our Arabic culture and identity, which is the source of our pride and dignity.

ABODE: Ali, your artwork is demonstrative of your deepest thoughts and displays depth and intensity. What is your inspiration when creating each of your artworks?
ABODE: For the Qatar National Day, how would you envision the past, present and future, in your most artistic approach?
For National Day, I have drawn a portrait of our grandfather Sheikh Through my paintings, I express Khalifa Bin Hamad Al Thani (may he the concept of modern realistic rest in peace) and I will draw other expressionism, as this method is leaders of Qatar such as our Father Painting by Austrian artist Voka combined with chromatic momentum. Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa bin I feel that this development is new in Hamad bin Abdullah bin Jassim bin Mohammed Al Thani and the Qatari fine art scene and for these works of art in this exhibition; the Emir of Qatar Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani; and other I was inspired by the Austrian artist Voka, who is known for his personalities of Qatar who represents the past, present and the interesting portraits of world celebrities. future of the State.
ABODE: We learned that you write poems for each of your paintings, why is that? I like poetry. In my opinion, poems generally are a completion of an art. Therefore, I do that to my creation. Moreover, I also want to put my Arabic culture into my pieces.
ABODE: Noticeably, you have this artistic inclination for faces. What is the story behind that? Faces are a part of our history; a ‘face’ shows a story of sorrow, worries or happiness, among other emotions. It represents many things in this real world.
ABODE: Considering your latest display at Artfix Galley, how do you think art has progressed and how you can help propagate it? There are different types of arts in the gallery which all depict different nationalities- such variations show how art has developed through the years. These creations by several talented artists serve as a healthy competition of some sort and have served as a platform to improve further in the field.

For some enthusiasts, live on sporting to this new SUV, a perfect synthesis of power and design. Writing about my experience, having the opportunity to test drive the new Porsche Cayenne S was very exciting and eagerly I arrived to receive the car, I was more than impressed with the modern silver colour and an even more sharpened design with precise lines and purposely placed light refracting edges, the front body, front wings, bonnet and air blades are also newly shaped, At first glance, the Cayenne is a Porsche through and through with its bi-xenon headlights and four-point LED daytime running lights. By the time I had entered the car I became more and more curious to know about all the new exciting features and of course more impressed with the interior design which I will be talking about in details. In fact Porsche center had assigned one of its team to explain to me the entire feature and the new additions to the new Porsche Cayenne S, he was explaining that The layout of the model’s rear lights creates a three-dimensional effect with the brake lights designed in four elements. The license plate, boot handle and lights are now integrated more elegantly into the boot lid. In addition to other modifications, the newly developed exhaust

For the latest engineered interior, much of the layout has been shaped around the driver, with a new multifunction sport steering wheel featuring shift paddles as standard. The rear seating system is even more comfortable, with optional seat ventilation now available for the first time., I liked very much the easy shifting between the 3 driving modes Comfort, Sport and Sport Plus.
The new Porsche-developed 3.6-litre V6 biturbo engine of the Cayenne S returns fuel consumption between 9.5 and 9.8 l/100 km, according to the NEDC. This represents one litre less than with the previous V8 engine. With its standard eightspeed Tiptronic S transmission, the Cayenne S accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in just 5.5 seconds (5.4 seconds with the optional Sport Chrono package) – 0.4 seconds faster than the previous Cayenne S. you can drive up to speed is 259 km/h.
