EDITOR IN CHIEF's L E T T E R
Each month here at ABODE, it takes a lot of work from our team of journalists, editors and designers to put together an issue you, our readers, will love. We scour the region for fresh content geared to keep you in the know of what’s happening here and now. Who you need to watch out for, where you need to be on the weekend and most importantly, what you need to be wearing. Jacquard is a trend that has swept through the fall season and not far behind it trails the perhaps one of the biggest trends of the yearminiature designer bags. See our top picks from Dior, Gucci and Dolce and Gabbana. We’ve also spotlighted one of Doha’s trendiest fashionistas, Emna El Hedi. She trailblazed her way through Paris’ top design school and now finds herself dressing some of the most high-profile Qatari women of the moment. Don’t miss her insightful advice and tips on how to dress for the contemporary woman of today. Our international travel correspondent Francesca Cruz discovers the classic city of Las Vegas, touring the outback in Nevada’s Mojave Desert, walking the Vegas strip and kicking back in the most luxurious hotel in the city, the Bellagio Resort. It’s been yet another interesting month, and as winter in Qatar approaches so should you prepare for nights spent out in the desert camping with friends, dinners set on the terrace at home and cool winter days having fun with your children. I sincerely wish you all a happy November.

J
enny Packham’s Fall collection comes packed with a glitzy punch. Our aesthetic here at ABODE is more on the muted yet eye-catching side, however, seeing this collection sets the ground for a little bit of a shake-up in the office. Drawing inspiration from the vibe of Ross Whitaker’s party photos from Paris in the 80s, Packham infused her collection with a newfound enthusiasm for society women. The colour palette abides by no rules - incorporating eclectic shades of lemon, blush, jade, and poppy. Endless layers of sequins and lavish silks presented themselves on the runway in the form of an opulently put together silhouette. Hemlines were raised, much like the stakes, which brought a naughtier, more youthful feel to the collection as a whole.

GUCCI SPRING/SUMMER 2017 Gucci’s Spring/Summer 2017 collection this season was an eclectic fusion of pop-cultural references, Renaissance China and the 70s and the 80s punk movement. The atmosphere inside the show in Milan was eerily romantic yet the designs coming out were rebellious and threw caution to the wind. This new collection also brought with it heavily embroidered bags, this one being ABODE’s favourite.

RIVER ISLAND LAUNCHES RI PLUS AW16 COLLECTION
“A plus-size collection doesn't need to be made totally different, it just needs to be made to fit.” – plus-size model Candice Huffine.
R
iver Island has announced that it will extend the size offering of selected core and main fashion styles with an autumnal 75-piece range in UK sizes 18-28, available in most Middle East stores. This collection will finally make fashion-forward, trend-lead clothing available to more women. The carefully curated collection will offer customers everything from fabulous party dresses to workwear classics and is interspersed with cult core basics such as the Molly stretch skinny jeans and our staple black leather biker jacket. For AW16, print is key, with stripes and florals featuring throughout whilst slices of bold colour break up a palette of neutrals, blacks and earthy tones. Dresses take on a more feminine

approach with mesh and lace panelling, whilst shoulder detailing prevails, with off-shoulder and cold shoulder styles. Sculpted styles can be seen in the form of lace-up bodies and suedette wrap skirts whilst wardrobe staples can be found in an array of colours and washes across our basics: vests, camis and jeans. For the launch of RI Plus, River Island tapped plussize model Candice Huffine, a first for the UK High Street. Huffine made history when she became the first plus-size model to feature in the latest Pirelli calendar and has featured in W magazine and graced the covers of i-D and Italian Vogue, to name a few. “The fact that River Island is extending their sizing while staying true to their brand is perfection. It's clear they have thought about a curvy woman's body and designed accordingly while giving her exactly what can be found on the high street in any other size. A plus-size collection doesn't need to be made totally different, it just needs to be made to fit, said Candice Huffine.

THERE IS A CHINESE PROVERB THAT SAYS: "DO NOT BE AFRAID OF A LONG ROAD TO SUCCESS, ONLY BE AFRAID OF A SHORTAGE OF AMBITION”. THIS IS A FITTING MANTRA FOR THIS MONTH’S SUBJECT OF OUR FASHION INSIDER - ICONIC CHINESE DESIGNER GUO PEI. FOR 20 YEARS, PEI HAS EXPLORED, CREATED AND EXECUTED EXQUISITE CHINESE FASHION AND HAS BEEN CELEBRATED BY THE WORLD OF HAUTE COUTURE IN ITS HOME, PARIS. GUO IS A TRUE AMBASSADOR OF HER HERITAGE AND CULTURE. FAST FORWARD TO ‘THAT’ TRAILING YELLOW GOWN DESIGNED FOR RIHANNA AT THE 2015 MET GALA AND NOW THE WIDER WORLD KNOWS HER NAME. GROWING UP IN A BURGEONING BEIJING, GUO WAS ENAMOURED BY THE CRAFTSMANSHIP OF CHINESE DRESSMAKING. ABODE: Hearing your story, it feels as though fashion was your destiny. Would you agree?
Designer Guo Pei
It is true that fashion is my fate. I grew up with and witnessed the birth and development of Chinese fashion. The journey is long as China's first generation of designers and recognised works in haute couture is just emerging. Luckily, my career has moved along with the progress and development of Chinese society.
ABODE: Tell us about your ‘Rose Studio’ project. I founded ‘Rose Studio’ in 1997. It was China's first haute couture company. We have worked with hand made customization now for 20 years, with traditional Chinese clothing as a form of art at the core. Our team is young, vibrant and dynamic. As for me, the studio is a realm where I can achieve all of my design dreams.
ABODE: You are very passionate about carrying on your Chinese heritage. Why is it so important to you?
28
ABODE NOVEMBER 2016 for PDF.indd 28
10/31/16 3:13 PM
ABODE: The incredible gown that you designed for Rihanna made headlines all around the world, creating a moment in fashion culture. What was your reaction to the reactions? Honestly it surprised me that it grabbed the attention of the world in such a way. I didn't have any expectations when I dressed Rihanna. She is incredible and has a unique temperament and confidence. She wore the piece like a queen and gave the dress new life. This makes me truly happy.
A l l throughout my childhood I grew up surrounded by arts and crafts therefore I have always had a very strong and emotional connection to them. Embroidery is the most representative aesthetic of Chinese traditional cultures and that is why it has been such an integral part of my creative work. Conveying China’s national culture within the traditional craftsmanship can awaken people's love for Chinese tradition. It shows the goodness of our national culture and is a way of expressing emotion.
ABODE: Haute couture is the utopia of fashion. Where do you fit in that world and what fascinates you about it? I think I was born to do haute couture. When I first had a taste of this world, I didn’t want to be involved simply because it is ‘haute couture’, I did it because I like communicating with people. I wanted to influence others with good design. I chose to work face-to-face with a single client or person and I love it when they really understand my idea and design. That’s why I love the craft of customization. I consider myself a good
communicator and a very sincere person and I think that is a perfect fit for this realm of fashion.
ABODE: How do you see fashion evolving in the coming years? Design will edge more towards Eastern and Oriental cultures. Chinese elements have really been emerging in the world of fashion in recent years. This to me indicates the future of fashion and I think that in the next two years, in particular, we will see a more Oriental design on the international stage.
ABODE: What’s next for Guo Pei? I have two strands of the business that I am focusing on. The first is Chinese brides wearing Chinese wedding clothes. I think this is important to integrate fashion, culture and history into creating the perfect Chinese bride. I feel it’s important to develop this in China. The other area is international development. I want to bring more awareness of Chinese fashion to the world by introducing my designs to more avenues. Not only in haute couture in Paris but even to the Middle East and to the rest of the world. I want to let the world appreciate Chinese style and culture.

T
he wonderful thing about fashion is often not the clothes, the catwalks or the glamour (well, maybe the glamour!) but inevitably it’s about the people. Their passion and stories never cease to amaze us here at ABODE. Case in point: this month's fashion heroine, Emna Hedi, stylist, buyer and blogger. Just a few years ago Emna was working a 9-5 job as a biologist. Trained as an engineer and seemingly destined to don her white lab coat for eternity, she had an idea late one night that would turn her world upside down. That idea was fuelled by her love of fashion and came in the form of a style blog: Style & Co. Naturally, Paris beckoned. After graduating from Paris International School of Image Consultancy she then earned her style stripes as a PR consultant and stylist for Darz Design. A move to Doha 9 years ago has seen her talent and ambition soar. She currently calls the shots as a fashion buyer for arabianporter.com and is a respected personal stylist. We are sure this upbeat, aspirational and creative lady would agree, there is no science to styling, sure, but it’s a magical, exhilarating search for that ‘je ne sais quoi'.
ABODE: Your life changed when you decided to study fashion in Paris. How has that influenced your career path? It taught me so much and not just in terms of education. The Parisian streets, metro, cafés and restaurants really taught me even more. Being there made me realise that you should only do what speaks to your soul, what you are passionate about and what makes you happy. It’s here that I realised fashion was my path.
ABODE: What makes a great stylist? A great stylist should firstly be a great observer. They must be someone with a strong sense of style. This will really be the defining factor in their success.
ABODE: Sum up your own personal style. I would say a nonchalant teenager with attitude! I honestly just dress the way I feel, though.

10/31/16 3:13 PM
ABODE: Is styling objective or subjective? And does your own style influence your clients? I think a good stylist has to achieve the right balance. A client approaches a particular stylist because of their unique and personal touch, yes, but the stylist should know where to draw the line between their own influence and the client’s needs. At the end of the day, the client should reach their own personal style potential with the help of the stylist along the journey.
ABODE: If you could dress anyone, dead or alive, who would it be and why? Oh, it would have to be Rihanna. She’s daring, has a strong personality and ceaseless charisma.
ABODE: Tell us about your role in buying at arabianporter.com. How does that work and what do you enjoy about it? Buying for this platform is such a pleasure. It’s like a treasure hunt! Every day I’m looking for a new designer, a new talent or that special collection that will be THE one. I love this part of what I do because it’s about trend forecasting. I love communicating with like-minded people on this side of the industry too and collaborating with creative minds.
ABODE: What inspires you about fashion in this region and in Qatar in particular? It’s the interesting mix of culture which opens up some amazing styling opportunities. Back home in Turkey, or even in Paris for that matter, I would not have the chance to style such a diverse range of nationalities. I‘m also obsessed with abayas! I find them extremely beautiful. That’s been a real discovery for me as for many years I presumed they were all the same, but they are so not!
ABODE: And what’s next for you? My website is launching soon. I also have some interesting collaborations, a lot of styling and some very exciting projects in the pipeline but my ultimate dream is to one day start a fashion styling academy. I don’t want to be just a personal stylist, I honestly want to share my vision and knowledge to help people be their own stylist.

FURSAN Qatar is a unique destination that is steeped in culture with an eye on the future and it’s local inhabitants are no different. Qatari women with impeccable style are flocking to malls and glamorous boutiques in search of the next IT bag. Gucci, Louis Vuitton and Christian Dior just don’t cut it anymore. Cue luxury brand Fursan; a newcomer to the scene, this high-end brand is situated in the The Pearl-Qatar in an exquisite space. It features a deep, sensual ‘Oud Wood’ colour to mirror their own deeply-rooted traditional way of designing and creating beautiful pieces and offers plenty of heritage references. The beautiful, eye-catching center piece is the “Golden Rain” sculpture, and in conjunction with the brilliant natural light of the sun’s rays, a contemporary space is created. Representing the sentiment of generosity, the sculpture signifies a compelling attitude of kindness and bounty, a distinguishing feature of the Arabic people. This taste and style is a tradition brought down from generation to generation. FURSAN is a Qatari brand name that is specialized in making leather accessories such as handbags, clutches, wallets and Silk Twill scarves. Each accessory is hand-crafted by Italian artisans whom all have their own traditional way of curating. The material for each piece has also been handpicked for a more refined accessory. Fuse this with the opulent Qatari aesthetic and you have a match made in designer heaven. Fursan’s exclusive line of colourful handbags and scarves are made from grained calf and exotic skins such as python, lizard, ostrich and alligator, all in limited pieces to ensure the individuality of each piece. Buyers can purchase a Fursan creation safe in the knowledge that it is a unique accessory, with only the buyer being in possession of such a covetable collectors item. The collection is a distinctive blend of modernity and elegance and is impeccable for all occasions. THE DAZZAH COLLECTION The collection has been inspired by the concept of Dazzah. Traditionally, gifts are held in an ‘Embayyat’ which is a wooden trunk decorated with intricate wood carvings and inlaid with brass or gold and given as a gift symbolizing the prosperity the new bride brings to her husband's home. It is from this rich history that the designs of the Dazzah Collection is born.

The exhibition showcased an array of exquisite abaya collections including jalabiyas, gowns, capes, bags and accessories, all intricately designed and created by well-known and up and coming designers from Qatar and other countries in the GCC. Parallel to the exhibition was a series of roadshows, forums and beauty and trends workshop. A WINNER’S PRIDE Alongside the exhibition was a competition by Qatar Chamber, in association with Qatar Business Women Forum. This competition was directed towards the local designers across the country, aimed at supporting local entrepreneurs and private sectors in Qatar, in particular, businesswomen.
KIZLAR DESIGN “Our designs for this exhibition were directed towards modern, confident, and unique women. Our full season collection is all about glamour. We were very keen on the fabric, using an assortment from all over the world. Whichever unique types we could find from our travels, we wanted to bring a touch of the world to Qatar. Catering to the Arab women in Qatar and across the GCC countries, we want our creations to be special and stand out amongst the others. We aim to please them and cater to every women’s individuality.”

PALAIS DES ARGANO “For this exhibition, my couture Kaftan collection was Moroccan inspired; and making it more unique and interesting is my idea of incorporating the brides’ picture on the design printed on the creation itself, like memorabilia. I see a woman like a princess when she wears my collection. Thus, my designs may be a bit pricey, but I believe cost corresponds with the quality and attention I give to my creations. Watch out, as very soon I will be expanding here in Qatar”

Lacoste has a great history in making stylish and technical sport outfits for the French ski team in the late 1960s, and Baptista took the fundamental elements of this heritage to modernize it. Doing so, pull-overs with "un crocodile" or "une crocodelle" logos show a play on words with Lacoste’s symbolic animal.

The overall result is a deconstructed silhouette, a young and free spirit that now represent Lacoste. It’s all about taking this sport heritage and keeping it modern, elegant, and always non-conformist.

BEAUTY REPORT
in
BEAUTYREGIME Integrating some kind of beauty regime into the madness of the morning school runs, meetings and schedules is always a challenge, but stepping out without a perfectly primed face is a no-no. We are constantly multi-tasking in our daily lives so why not apply the same idea to our beauty regimes? So, if you're trying to cut down your prep time but still want to look your best, embrace these nifty beauty products that have multiple uses- all in one!
CONTOUR KITS
THE BUSINESS OF MULTI-TASKING When we say multi-tasking, we're serious about the word 'multi.' The Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector and Cover Fx Custom Enhancer Drops have endless possibilities.
TINT FOR LIP, CHEEK AND - COLOUR CORRECTION?
Lip and cheek tint products reign as the queens of multi-tasking makeup but did you know you can use it for colour correction too? Red and pink tints can be applied under the eyes to neutralise dark circles.
Investing in a good contour palette (try Anastasia Beverley Hills, QR 170 at Sephora) is one of the best things for a quick and easy application. You can use the lighter shades to blot shine, prime, highlight, and conceal. While for the darker shades, you can use it for your brows, as a contour, a bronzer and an eyeshadow. All hail the contour palette!
• Use it to highlight your cheeks, temples and nose bridge. • You can mix it with your foundation to achieve a natural dewy finish. • It can be used as a base for a metallic or shimmer eyeshadow. • Apply it to the centre of your lips for a glossy and high-shine look. • Use it as a body glow to highlight your collarbone and shoulders.
POWER POWDER
Don't limit a translucent powder's potential by just using it to blot shine. Create sharp edges by cleaning it with powder. If you've applied too much bronzer or blush, you can tone it down using powder as well. Blend a smokey eye better by using a powder as your base. Make any lipstick matte by lightly brushing it on top of your lips. Oily hair? Brush the powder with a light hand on your roots to eliminate the oil.

A MODEL’s
Makeup Musings Models are the framework of the fashion and beauty industry. They are the chiselled bone structured, highcheeked and rosy-lipped muses of many a beauty brand who bring life to a dream envisioned by said designers and artists. Regardless of their high profile beauty, these models of the moment still live ordinary lives, and just like us, they too have lazy days. This month we get a few model's take on makeup used by some of the highest paid models in the world.
GISELE BÜNDCHEN
Being the highest paid model in the world, Gisele takes her off-work days very seriously. "On some days, I love to spend time and effort on doing my own makeup." she said, in a behind-the-scenes interview.
JOURDAN DUNN
The first African model to be listed on Forbes' highest-paid models in the world, Jourdan focuses on her brows and skin the most. She is one of the many models who invest in the best skincare regime available.
SKIN PREP
MODEL’S MUST-HAVES
Always carry makeup remover wipes to easily remove your makeup or freshen up your skin anytime, anywhere. Keep a lip balm handy to avoid drying out your lips. Your favourite concealer is a great item of makeup to keep close in order to retouch and hide any little blemishes that may pop up unexpectedly during the day.
• To avoid any possible breakouts, stay away from oil-based cleansers. Opt for purifying ones to protect your skin from any acne. • Use a thick moisturiser to help your skin maintain the hydration needed despite the heavy makeup that is often applied to your face. • On a busy day, sunscreen is going to be your best friend. Never leave the house without protecting your skin from the sun. The higher the SPF, the better. Your skin will thank you later.
KATE MOSS
Jumping from shoot to shoot, Kate maintains a minimal yet fresh approach to makeup. Her makeup must-have? Mascara. Almost every no-makeup look of Kate Moss' has one thing in common - defined yet natural long lashes.
"For a natural look, the idea is to not cover all the blemishes or dark circles—at least not excessively. It’s natural to have a few marks on your skin." -British model, CHARLI HOWARD

SPA
BY CLARINS
roviding the perfect antidote to the sometimes chaotic Doha city life lies the discreetly located Spa by Clarins in the picturesque grounds of the Marsa Malaz Kempinski. Upon my arrival into the grand entrance to the spa, I was first requested to let my therapist know more about myself, my health history, and my likes and dislikes to ensure a truly personalised experience. I was then whisked away, deep into the romantically lit labyrinthine hallways of the spa. Within 15 minutes of my arrival, I had changed into a comfy robe and had made my way into my otherworldly treatment room. Warm and welcoming, the lighting and setup immediately encouraged me to enter into a relaxed state of mind. Prior to my Rebalancing Massage with Essential Oils, I was offered a health drink- cucumber, lemon, mint and a dash of honey – from the Vitamine Café located in the spa. Before long I was being ensconced in hot towels on a bed and being murmured to about the pressure I would prefer, in hushed tones by my therapist. I refused to believe I was anywhere but in some faraway idyllic island with nothing to worry about except whether or not I would win the fight with sleep. For me, the highlight of this treatment was the assortment of heavenly smelling hot treatment oils that were gently massaged into my body. This massage uses enveloping movements for an incomparable feeling of well-being. I was
given two choices of oil- Relax Oil that revives the long lost feelings of relaxation and Tonic Oil that galvanises the body and mind. The massage was deep and comprehensive, with emphasis spent on the areas that were particularly stiff (namely my neck, shoulders and legs), ensuring that all kinks were well and truly ironed out. In the end, sleep won the day and I was awoken by the soft tones of my therapist informing me that my pampering session had all come to an end after which I was encouraged to take some time to finish my health drink in the pretty relaxation area or take a dip in their warm pool. You can make use of the Spa by Clarins’ facilities – they are fully equipped with a pool, 23 treatment rooms, separate female and male spa wet areas, Hammam and relaxation lounges, spa suites, a Vitamine Café and a Clarins Boutique, fully open to the public as well. The afternoon's events were wonderful and I could not leave without the burning question of when I could relive it all again. Spa by Clarins is conveniently located in Marsa Malaz Kempinski on The Pearl so if you're timepoor but reluctant to skimp on quality, fitting a treatment into your schedule, especially if you live on the man-made island, is a breeze. Feel like a princess for the day and treat yourself to a few hours at one of Doha's most luxurious spas. The Spa by Clarins is open daily from 9am to 10pm.

Silver hair is incredibly popular at the hand lady, master moment and women all around the world colourist Roslyn are stripping their hair and attempting Sepagan. “For to achieve the fantasy-esque look. David hails the initial white and from the south of France and was 19 years old then we apply a silver when he made a brave move to Paris. Silver hair, David advised me, takes time and a lot of careful planning. “The way I do silver hair is with a thought-out plan that is tailored to each individual according to the history of their hair. Silver is a colour often done by inexperienced hairdressers who use very harsh bleach on the hair and many women come to me in the hopes that I may be able to correct the colour and reverse the damage done by the bleach.” When I arrived at Blue Brush, David took one look at my hair and said, “Lets get to work dear!” and that was it. The process begun by bleaching my hair with a high-performing yet gentle bleach to avoid damage. I use hair extensions as I have thin hair texture and so colouring my hair all the way to silver may be quite a task for David and his right-

After 4 hours of fun with David, my hair was a beautiful shade of blonde but due to my extension colour, it was too risky to go for the silver. David opted for a very soft balayage with my root colour softened to a light brown and gradually faded into a bright blonde. David puts his customer's hair heath first, though, saying “I was very disappointed to not have been able to reach the silver hair today but it is achievable after 2-3 bleach process’s. It takes time to make such a drastic change to the hair but with a stylist who knows what he/she is doing, nothing is impossible.”

Diset v yle t s e f i L If you stop and think about it, we're always trying and failing to stick to fad diets. Shedding those pesky pounds is now harder than ever, with food chains lining the streets in droves. Saying a simple "no" seems like a daily struggle we often lose causing us to turn to quick fixes. Though, what we fail to realise is that these "fixes" never last, and in fact, they could have adverse effects on our body in the long term and often lead to weight gain.
What does this mean exactly? To change your ‘dietary lifestyle’ means to adopt permanent healthy habits which will, in turn, promote long-term weight control, better health, and of course happier days! If we simply punish ourselves with the ‘no more of this’ kind of diet we subconsciously trigger a depressive state in our minds that we are at a loss whereas the healthy lifestyle approach means we are choosing an alternative path in which we are now going to fuel our bodies with goodness in order to not just achieve a particular goal but to live a healthier lifestyle and enjoy the many benefits that come with it.
Simple tips on how to do this? 1. Be thoughtful about what you put into your body: is it natural, do they contain additives and artificial colours? 2. Learn to substitute: • Swap the soda/packaged drinks with freshly squeezed fruit juices or water. • Instead of bread, rice and heavy foods replace with salad, fruit and slow digesting grains. • If you work at a desk all day, replace your coffees with some nuts, smoothies and fresh juices. +974 5040 3234
3. Maintain consistent eating habits: eat every 2-3 hours. Avoid those big gluttonous meals that slow down your metabolism. 4. Never skip breakfast: have proteins and fibre to ensure you have long lasting energy throughout the day. 5. Break a sweat for at least 30 minutes three times a week: love yoga? Attend a class. No gym membership? No problem, jog along the Corniche now that the weather is cooling down. Ask yourself a question each day, "Did I build up a sweat today?". If the answer is no, get moving! 6. Aim for 8 hours of sleep every night: It is the only time your body gets to repair and rejuvenate cells. 7. Know that balance is key: it is okay to have a cheat day and not feel guilty afterwards! You are seeking betterment and good health which is a positive action, don’t punish yourself for that with negative thoughts.
by Ghazal Shooshtarian - Evolve
T
he first step in considering a new diet plan is to come to the realisation that it is a lifestyle change which is needed and not a padlock on the sweets draw.
Once we change our dietary lifestyle we will soon notice that this will increase our energy levels, lift our mood, improve our metabolism, boost our self-confidence, and most importantly we will feel good overall. There will no longer be a need to step on the scales every week whilst peeking through your palms in despair. Once you feel good on the inside, you will look great on the outside. So stop "dieting" and start living!

Living on
The Wedge Fueling a Shopping Binge
Let’s be honest, most of us spend far more time in this country’s myriad of shopping malls than we like to admit. We tend to associate mall food options to a furtive fast food fix or a chain café. But I’m pleased to say in Doha the options are no longer limited to underwhelming food courts. Here are two places that allow you to combine your love of a good meal with that of an even better bargain.
Ra che l Ann Morris
Kababs & Kurries Sometimes I like to keep my favourite eateries a secret. But this outpost of a well-known UAE brand is frankly too good not to share. Tucked away in an obscure and bijoux mall in Ain Khaled, it serves up some of the most authentic North Indian food I have had in Qatar. From the huge basket of poppadoms and dips you are given on arrival to their tender chicken and lamb kebabs, the food here is freshly cooked with pride. Their richly spiced, earthy brown and moreish butter chicken will make you forget the over-sugared bright red concoctions we all have eaten. They also have a weekday lunchtime thali – a selection of small dishes selected by the chef for QR55 (QR45 for vegetarian options) with unlimited garlic naan. Set the GPS, do not pass go and head there now. First floor at 01 Mall Ain Khaled Phone: 44440133
Lili Café My usual method of operation when it comes to malls is a 'get in and get out' one- as quickly as possible without hurting anyone. But on a recent visit to Ezdan Mall, this cute café adjoining Paris Gallery caught my eye. Lili Café has been closed for several months while it underwent a renovation and a menu makeover, and it was worth the wait. Open early from breakfast through to midnight, the menu runs from the simple plain and filled croissants (everything including baked items are handmade on the premises) through to burgers, pasta and over-the-top waffles swathed in caramel. Their duo of sliders/mini burgers (often an afterthought on many Qatar menus) with Emmenthal cheese manages to be both juicy and packed with flavour. A favourite of mine is their baked spaghetti and meatballs, which is served in individual ramekins – oozing layers of cheese and meat. I refused to share it – that’s high praise in my world. With a funky design (white furniture and colourful umbrellas hang from the ceiling) there is even a selection of books you can read while you sip your “Luxury Karak Tea” or decadent chocolate milkshake. Steak Lovers Rejoice!
PRIME AT INTERCONTINENTAL DOHA - THE CITY IS HERE.
A
t PRIME we don’t simply offer the finest cuts of meat from around the world, we strive to deliver one of the finest steakhouse dining experiences, and take pride in all the details that make a visit to PRIME memorable. Bon Appetit!
That was the first thing I read when browsing the menu of such a unique steakhouse; every word stated was true. When I first stepped out of the elevator, the staff extended a warm welcome and showed me the way to my table facing the open kitchen, a perfect location from which you can see the whole journey.
The meat was cooked just the way I like it, with every component on the plate complimenting each other. The fries were delicious and the fried shiitake mushrooms were crispy and now one of my favourite starters of a restaurant in Doha!
There is a wide selection of starters from which I selected the Prime shrimp cocktail, which was very tasty.
Talking about the restaurant manager, I will say that if you don't know what to order simply place your dining experience in the expert hands of Ally Hossenbux. He was successful in creating an enjoyable environment through out our dining experience.
For the starter, I had a 36 hour slow-cooked short rib served with a wasabi sauce that just melted away on my palate. With every bite, the meat dissolved and left behind a beautiful lingering taste in my mouth. The waiters are attentive and make sure our drinks were refilled, plates cleared, giving us enough time between meals. I had the luxury of watching my main course being prepared in the open kitchen and was handed a tiny ice-cream bowl with lemon sorbet, which makes you feel you are ready to have the Wagyu Tenderloin steak as recommended by Ally Hosseunbux, Prime's manager. It was served along with confit of tomato, beetroot coulis, roast garlic, and steamed egg yolk. The sides ordered to share were truffle mashed potato, creamed spinach, crispy fried shiitake mushrooms and truffle parmesan fries. For the steak sauces I requested roquefort sauce, peppercorn sauce, and veal jus sauce.
The decoration its simply elegant with beautiful wood a star feature. Prime’s relaxed and comfortable setting combined with its exquisite cuisine will surely make for a memorable dining experience. Actually, Doha offers a good selection of steakhouses, but PRIME is definitely one name which comes up as our top ranked. Every time I have eaten in Prime I have been pleased with the food and the service. And with the perfect ending of the dinner comes the delicious treat of dessert. A tray full of sweet treats and a selection of little brownies, popcorn pannacotta with caramel sauce, thyme crème brulée, and a sweet and sour melting sphere. A must-try for steak lovers, Prime restaurant in InterContinental Doha The City will leave you wanting more each time you pay them a visit. Don't miss out, make your reservation now!
Words by Marian Nagy Photography by Jessie Palanca
As I waited for my starters, I was offered a basket of bread accompanied by three different flavours of butter- plain, herb, and a rich tomato.

A rose is the only thing that can change a woman’s mood in 60 seconds - Ebraheem Al Samadi From a very young age, it was clear that Forever Rose founder Ebraheem Al Samadi was destined for success in the world of business. An entrepreneur from the age of 14, Ebraheem launched his very first business out of his mother’s Florida apartment selling off-season clothing and items on eBay. ABODE's Annabel Rooney shares Ebraheem’s love for flowers and the beautiful way in which, if handled with care and expertise, flowers are assembled. Ebraheem sat down with her in the beautiful lobby of the St. Regis over cappuccino and a big bouquet of Forever Rose flowers.
ABODE: Hi Ebraheem, thank you for chatting with me. We clearly share a love for flowers and the art of floristry but what is it about the job that is so alluring for you? For me, the message that flowers bring to the receiver is the most important part of what I do and it is why I am so passionate about my work. When received, flowers make people feel loved, appreciated and leave a lasting feeling of happiness and joy. I am also proud of the jobs that are created from this business and the circle of life that takes place. We harvest the flowers from the earth and create jobs and allow people to spread love through the act of giving.

ABODE: Which arrangement styles are most popular in the gulf?
ABODE: Where can we expect to find Forever Rose in Doha?
In the Middle East, bigger is always better so our big bouquets are most popular but our ‘Bella’ rose design closely follows in popularity. It is a single rose that retains it’s striking natural beauty forever when protected in the glass dome without the need for water or sunlight. The rose is based on the idea from the Disney movie ‘The Beauty and the Beast’ and comes in 29 different colours. They are completely handmade with love and symbolize the love for one person.
Qatar’s very first Forever Rose boutique has officially opened in the luxurious Al Hazm Mall in Doha, cementing the notion of everlasting love for those passionate about romance and luxury. We’ll look forward to welcoming you to our store!
ABODE: In which places around the home do you think flowers look best? Our ‘Bella’ rose should be in the bedroom to be admired in a personal setting and the handpicked, bigger bunches of fresh flowers can be placed in an area popular in the home, preferably near to a window, to be admired by guests too.
ABODE: Are there any ideas you can give our readers on how to compile a complimentary floral arrangement for their home according to their current colour scheme? Yes, I would ask them to consider the colours that they put together when they get up in the morning. How do you match your own colours in the way that reflects who you are? I would suggest keeping this in mind when selecting the right colours for their own flowers. Forever Rose is available to order online at www.foreverrose.ae or by emailing info@foreverfose.ae Client’s will enjoy free delivery within 24 hours across Qatar.

e have all walked into a room and, knowingly or not, experienced an emotional or physical reaction to our surroundings. Warm, cold, inviting, isolating — interior decor and design can have a powerful effect on the room’s ambience and, more importantly, the way you feel. I believe creating a healthy, restorative, feel-good space starts with understanding your lifestyle, your needs and the things in life that are most important to you. After all, your home is your oasis and should be designed to inspire a sense of comfort and wellbeing, while reflecting your unique personality and style

Indonesian Craftsmanship Get the island look, without the airfare! Bali, an idyllic Indonesian retreat located in the westernmost end of the Lesser Sunda Islands, is loaded with rich culture, stunning scenery and ever-present spirituality. It has provided artistic inspiration for countless creatives versed in dealing with buildings bearing strong historical values and traditions. As I have a love for all things different and foreign, when I travel I find myself hunting for unique pieces of furniture that represent the country's aesthetic. Scouring the markets and hidden yards, I always find unique interior elements. Developing my own personal knowledge encourages me to incorporate these items into my new designs. In today’s current design period, with interiors projecting a minimal feel, there is increasing evidence that a new direction of design is emerging. Designs that reflect a personality, a story, warmth, a human's touch. Designs that fulfill a need, yet tell a story. In our globalised society where everything tends towards sameness, I find there is a huge demand for ones “uniqueness" hence the word ‘bespoke’ is so often used in my latest designs. On one of my most recent trips to Bali, the abundance of local tactile materials, such as Indonesian teak wood, excited my inner designer! With a society constantly on the go, I feel we are always in search of some down time and implementing these natural elements of timbers from nature into our environments creates a harmonised feel within our spaces. The simplistic design does not have to reflect cold and hard surroundings but rather celebrate the human touch. Good luck designing!

LAS VEGAS
Words by Francesca Cruz
Neon flashing lights, opulent resort hotels, over-the-top restaurants with spectacular views, incredible concerts & shows---you have arrived in the desert mirage that is Las Vegas, Nevada! Las Vegas has retained the swagger the desert oasis was so glorified for in its commencement and is now a destination for foodies, spa connoisseurs, music lovers, and of course those travellers that know how to indulge in luxury. Brightly lit in all its pageantry with opulent hotels and a glistening that seems to cascade onto the city, its legendary 4-mile stretch referred to as the strip, is visited by over 40 million people every year. This is the place to travel to for show-stopping spectacles, over-the-top pool parties, and the most elaborate buffets and A-list restaurants.

Valley of Fire THE LOWDOWN: Valley of Fire is one of the most spectacular places you can visit if you are a nature enthusiast. It’s a 50-minute drive from Las Vegas to the Mojave Desert—just northeast of the famed Las Vegas Strip. Dedicated in 1935, Valley of Fire is a state park that covers 35,000 acres of land. The park takes its name from the red sandstone formations that came about over 150 million years ago, during the Mesozoic Era, from the great shifting sand dunes. When the sun’s rays reflect the sandstone formations they appear to be as if on fire, dusk here is certainly a site to behold. Go for a hike, or set up a picnic spot with your family and enjoy the setting sun. It’s a great way to witness the majesty of the west coast of the United States. TRAVELLER TIP: There are several great places close to Las Vegas to enjoy nature and the outdoors: The Grand Canyon, Hoover Dam, the Historic Railroad Hiking Trail—make a day of it.

elcome to paradise! This was the greeting we had when we stepped off of the luxury catamaran ferry which took us on a 25-minute journey across the crystal clear waters of the Arabian Gulf to reach the breathtaking Banana Island. It is a real paradise sanctuary where you can find what you are looking for, with world class facilities and limitless activities providing relaxation and adventure, wellness and pure indulgence. They were very committed whenever we need to go any place on the island, they gave us extraordinary service and hospitality.
Our Villa had a sea view with a private pool. It was very spacious, super clean and tidy and fully equipped with exceptional decoration. The bathroom has Anantara signature amenities, a bathtub and a shower.

After a while, we headed over to have lunch and here I have to say that the resort is presenting guests a taste of traditional Qatari hospitality and a unique resort experience with access to some of the most enticing culinary experiences from across the world. The resort offers eight dining options with a mouthwatering choice of Middle Eastern, Italian and international cuisines, to be savoured at spectacular locations all around the island with tranquil views of the stunning seas. So our first lunch was in Riva, the perfect Italian restaurant with the perfect company, The first thing that strikes you about it is the sleek design and the perfect ambience and the high point was the level of service we received. Treza and the whole staff who served us possessed a level of professionalism that’s rarely found, their presence at the table, their knowledge and general demeanor and all topped off by excellent food. After lunch, we went for a tour in the Island exploring the resort and all the facilities presented by Banana Island to its guests, and by then we were totally surprised, everything you can dream of you will find it in this wonderful place. I was impressed with every single detail and with the over water villas, with the wide range of activities like scuba diving, snorkelling, cycling, tennis and much more. Nothing was forgotten, but what was the most surprising for me was the Unique Balance Wellness Centre, a one of a kind in a resort in Qatar and the Middle East. The unique centre features stunning surroundings and a wide range of services designed to complement the grandeur of the island. Spanning more than 342 sqm for both male and female sections, this health and wellness destination offers guests a collection of unique treatments and personalized services, which can take their wellbeing to a whole new level at the resort’s dedicated Wellness Centre with expert guidance and state of the art facilities, offering the ultimate sanctuary to escape the hectic pace of everyday life. With a tailored holistic approach, which assesses lifestyle factors, as well as guests' physical, mental and emotional state, the fully qualified team, will devise a results-driven programme that is personally prescribed to meet individual goals, A programme that suits every need, it's worth mentioning the weight loss program which has a different concept and process you can`t find it anywhere else. Guests are guided on sustainable healthy habits which are easily integrated into daily life, for long lasting success even after leaving the resort The Wellness Centre’s team oversees each guest’s journey to encourage optimal health and wellness and to help them meet their goals Talking about my experience in the Wellness centre, I tried the Floatation Therapy which promises to alleviate stress, with deep relaxation, speeds rehabilitation and recovery, improves circulation of oxygen and Three Bedroom Seaview Pool Villa Terrace

nutrients, in addition to stimulating left/right brain synchronisation. My therapist directed me to the facial room, where I got an intensive cleansing and nourishing facial with all natural ingredients, accompanied by a relaxing head and face massagean experience that is one of a kind. Then we had our dinner in Al Nahham Resturant, where the atmosphere and the sea view and the quality of the food are unforgettable. I can`t forget the most delicious and tasty lamb chops I have ever tasted. The next day we enjoyed the privacy of our room pool where my 1 and half years old daughter enjoyed playing in the water where it's very safe for kids. Then we went to have breakfast in Al Azraq Restaurant where you can enjoy a wide range of buffet options for you and your family members and kids are not forgotten, where they can enjoy a lovely well-designed buffet for them.
Then it was the time to get pampered with a special Spa treatment, an experience that changed my life. Thanks to Yosita my therapist- she checked my body and knew exactly what I needed and immediately she assigned to me the perfect treatment which was the stretching massage, it's very useful to stretch your muscles and release the tension and stress. She educated me how to take care of myself and my whole life because being successful in life starts from wellbeing, Anantara motivates each guest to pursue their personal passions and goals through bespoke and inspirational experiences. ‘Balance’ – an innovative new wellness concept available at Banana Island Resort Doha by Anantara - is a natural extension of this philosophy which harnesses Anantara Spa’s award-winning expertise I experienced brilliant service throughout the whole stay, from the valet service upon arriving at Al Shyoukh Terminal till departure at the same place. PHILIPP PLEIN AW16 CAMPAIGN #PLEINHERO Starring Chris Brown, Carmen Dell’Orefice, Soo Joo Park and Crystal Renn as the ultimate super team, the Autumn/Winter 2016 campaign features a cast of diverse characters. From a suave suit-wearing hero to levitating heroines in lace gowns and crystal catsuits, these are sophisticated warriors, always ready for action in their elegant leather sneakers. In each scenario, the characters appear to switch opposing sides, representing the potential for good and evil in all of us – the real war is an internal one – and the importance of embracing everyone’s differences in our quest for harmony. Iconic image maker Steven Klein once again collaborates with Philipp Plein for another blockbuster project. Inspired by vintage American comic books and today’s Dark Knight and Avengers sagas, this season’s campaign presents a vision of the modern superhero and, at the same time, acts as a symbolic rallying cry for self-empowerment. Shot on a Red Camera, the series of dynamic photographs are frozen moments from a short film coming to a screen near you soon.
