The Quintessential American Jeweller

Compiled by marisela paesano

F

or the first time, David Webb will exhibit his latest collection in Qatar at the Doha Jewellery & Watches Exhibition. ABODE brings you a brief story of this iconic American jeweler who has been a favourite with Hollywood stars since the 60’s. Born in Asheville, North Carolina, David Webb was the goto jeweler for society swans and Hollywood stars during the cultural revolution of the 1960s and 1970s. His signature animal bracelets and richly coloured assortment of jewelry, all set in the warmth of his favorite yellow gold, has dressed stylish women over the decades, from Jackie Kennedy and Elizabeth Taylor to Jennifer Lawrence and Gwyneth Paltrow.

David Webb opened for business in 1948 in a small walk-up with only a few employees, just around the corner from New York’s Diamond District. By 1950, when he was just twentyfive, he had reached his first fashion summit: the cover of Vogue magazine. Even in those early days, David Webb was the creative visionary behind every piece of jewelry made in his workshop, which produced bold and beautifully made jewelry under his watchful eye. The thousands of sketches and hand-colored renderings he left behind remain the foundation of the company, and continue to direct the efforts of the David Webb craftsmen and women. The spirit of David Webb is alive and well in the

workshop housed above the New York boutique. The newest pieces, which all evolve from those original renderings, continue to evoke a sense of glamor and fantasy. David Webb is open, fresh, elegant, and modern. He’s best known for his animal bracelets, always more declarative than cute. He excelled in his use of yellow gold, saying “the more barbaric, the better.” The color is certain and bold. David Webb embraced art deco and heraldic forms, and the beauty of enamel jewelry. His most elegant jewelry makes big pearls sexy and turns a spotlight on rock crystal accented with white diamonds. Important diamond jewelry is an unexpected, stunning entry in his work. “All of the designs we have in production today began with renderings by David Webb between 1948 and 1975. He was known to adjust designs based on a customer’s desires, so today we also experiment with scale, color, stones, and materials in the name of David Webb’s fiercely imaginative mind.” says Mark Emanuel, co-owner, David Webb. “Our distinctive fine jewelry looks best on the empowered and stylishly dressed, one who is not afraid to take risks and make a statement.” “We're especially excited to be, once again, visiting Qatar. The Doha Jewellery and Watch Expo is a great way for us to showcase our latest pieces with our customers here in the Gulf who value our craftsmanship and style.”

She’s been gracing the Red Carpet for 15 years and this year was no different. The newly engaged Telenovela star stepped out in a George Hobeika gown with intricate beading and sequin embellishments. The white bridal gown featured an open back and bow detailing, proving that she’s still got it at 40!

Will Smith and Jada Pinkett-Smith The power couple of the century that is Will and Jada Smith stepped out in Versace at the 2016 Golden Globe Awards to support Will’s nomination as Best Actor in his most recent film, ‘Concussion’. Lady Gaga

She’s blossomed into a Hollywood superstar and stunned onlookers in a sleek, off-the-shoulder gown accessorized with some rather large diamonds. The custom-made Versace creation was a winner with the crowds as she accepted her award for Best Performance by an actress in a limited series of a motion picture for ‘American Horror Story: Hotel.' Christian Christian Dior revolutionized the fashion industry with his bold, postwar designs and in 1947, he launched his first collection ‘New Look’, establishing a fashion empire that is still influential today. The legendary fashion house has possessed notable creative directors such as protégé Yves St Laurent, John Galliano and most recently Raf Simons, which has seen the French house tilt in a more modernist direction. By Domenica Fitch

A history

T

he House of Dior opened its doors in 1946, financially aided by wealthy businessman Marcel Boussac. The entrepreneur had initially invited Dior to design for popular brand Phillipe et Gaston, but Dior had refused his offer, wishing to make a fresh start under his own name. His first collection, dubbed ‘New Look’ by Carmel Snow, editor-inchief of Harpers Bazaar, featured far more voluptuous shapes and silhouettes, predominantly lined with boned bustier-style bodices and hip padding that made his dresses flare out from the waist, creating a curvaceous form.

The French fashion house quickly expanded with the opening of a Christian Dior boutique in New York City in 1949 and following that, general manager Jacques Rouet devised a licensing program to place the now-renowned name of Christian Dior on a variety of luxury goods. The name was soon applied to jewelry, hosiery, furs, hats, and handbags. By the mid-50’s, the House of Dior operated a well-respected fashion empire and launched its first shoe collection, aided by designer Roger Vivier.

Artistic Designer. Laurent’s designs proved extremely popular and once again the luxury brand triumphed with Yves St Laurent at the helm. The luxury brand remains ever-popular today, operating a total of 210 locations (as of September 2010) across the globe. However, the elegant and opulent designs of Christian Dior appeal perhaps to one nation in particular: the Middle East. Christian Dior creates both annual haute couture and readyto-wear collections and allegedly, the UAE and GCC are the biggest consumers of this extreme form of fashion, known for it’s intricate detailing and ‘no-budget’ budget. Last year, Middle Eastern shoppers spent more than £73.2 million so what better location for Christian Dior to showcase the notorious ‘Le Theatre’ exhibition this past November 2015. Miniature replicas of some of Christian Dior’s best-known couture pieces, such as those worn by the likes of Elizabeth Taylor, could be seen on display at Dubai Mall throughout the month, as a testament to the legendary designer.

A master at creating shapes and silhouettes, Dior brought In 1957, the legendary fashion figure died of a heart attack. The womenswear into the modern world and reestablished Paris death of the French couturier left the House of Dior in chaos; as the center of the fashion world, and for that, we will be that was until 21 year old Yves St Laurent was promoted to eternally grateful.

Yasmin Mansour Dressing Up Qatar, One Lady At A Time interview By annabel rooney

Yasmin Mansour is an incredibly talented designer and art enthusiast based here in Doha. Following the release of her most recent Spring/Summer 2016 collection, our Editor Annabel sat down with Yasmin to find out more about this inspirational young lady. Find Yasmin on Instagram at @_yasminmansour to view her designs. For orders, contact her via her website, www.yasminmansour.net

BODE: At what age did you first become aware of your love for couture? Yasmin Mansour: Ever since I was a little girl, I've always found it fascinating how designs come to life through each stage of production. I was drawn in by a whole world full of art that I knew I wanted to be a part of. I was so attracted to it, and I still am. I found I had a talent for drawing, and so I went to take courses to hone my skills, and that was the start of my involvement.

ABODE: How did you start your fashion label? YM: In March 2013, I began designing my first piece. I contemplated the look of the woman who would purchase the dress I was designing. She would be attractive and powerful, and so my first piece came to be a cape, which is now my signature design and from there I designed more and more. ABODE: What has been your inspiration each time you design a dress or a cape? YM: Nature has always been my main inspiration, without a doubt. ABODE: What type of woman purchases your dresses? Where do they usually wear them? YM: I would say a strong, fashionable, cultured, and charming lady would be the right one to wear my dresses. My designs are made for the woman who prioritizes her looks and what she wears and attends beautiful events and parties. ABODE: Will you have an online shop here in the Middle East? YM: Soon, yes. If all goes to plan. ABODE: What would you say has been the high point of your career and why? YM: As I said, I have always loved clothing and fashion design, so I would have to say discovering that passion and acting on it was the high point. People are now wearing my designs, and this is something that makes me very proud of myself. ABODE: It’s a fresh new year, what is first on your agenda for 2016? YM: I have lots of plans, one of which is to start my A/W ’16 collection. ABODE: What kind of advice would you give to budding young designers here in the Gulf that want to make a start with a positive attitude? YM: Think out of the box, work hard and love what you do. ABODE: What goals have you set for yourself for the future? YM: My goal is to grow my brand internationally and encourage women around the globe to join in on my vision and be a part of it. Quick facts:Most loved item of clothing? My capes and jackets The best handbag you own? All the bags I own are my best. Most loved perfume? My Chanel No 5! Most loved item of clothing? my way my style

“Art, Sleep, Style, Repeat!” By Laura Prior

Doha-born Anum Bashir’s burning ambitions began at the age of 5 when she instinctively knew that she was destined to become a go-getting girl of the globe. This month, ABODE had the pleasure of sharing this fascinating blogger's story.

32

S

pringing into action at just 22, Anum relocated to the United States and by 24 had graduated with a Masters from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. But that wasn’t enough, and the lure of the art and fashion scene meant a move to The Big Apple was a no-brainer. We quote; "Naturally, what does a fashion loving, adventure seeking girl do?". Since, she has curated a unique tapestry of visual and written opinion through her blog ‘Desert Mannequin’, worked on notable creative projects that give life to the scene here in Qatar and has even made a move into fashion buying. Gifted, instinctive and driven, she has become one of Qatar’s rising style voices. The girl even talks fashion in her sleep! Might we suggest the use of the hashtag #obsessed? Well, that’s ok, because we are a little ‘obsessed’ with her too.

ABODE: Tell us about your blogging journey Anum: I have always loved art and fashion and I saw a niche in the regional blogosphere. Combining the two and presenting contextualized, unique imagery is what I wanted to achieve and that’s how Desert Mannequin started. My husband, being a talented artist and photographer, encouraged me to start a platform of my own to share personal style, the works of regional and international designers and shed light on the local budding art scene in Qatar. I’d like to think I have a new approach to style and a voice that’s fresh for the region. I started Desert Mannequin here locally, but I strive for it to have global reach. Plus, that paired with my time in the art world creates an interesting crossroads and carves out a whole niche for me that I feel no one else is currently doing.

ABODE: How do you keep content fresh and relevant? Anum: I have a ton of “eureka!” moments while I’m asleep. It’s funny but I feel like I literally work around the clock.

ABODE: Who is your favourite designer or fashion house and why? Anum: I’m a big advocate for new talent at the moment. We all enjoy a great pair of Valentino shoes or a Prada suit, but as an influencer I feel we have a responsibility to the budding industry that surrounds us. Plus, I do truly believe one can garner far more street cred by being at the discovering end of the spectrum and helping new talent shine in the spotlight. So, I really love the work of Nathalie Trad, Faiza Bouguessa and Hind Matar, just to name a few regional designers who are slowly carving out a solid piece of the pie for themselves.

ABODE: What gets you fired up about fashion? Anum:Predicting something. Being right. Getting that assurance that I’m on the right track with what I’m doing and what I’m saying.

ABODE: Do you have a ‘can’t live without’ fashion item? Anum: I think I literally wear denim on a daily basis. I’d wear denim to a black tie event if I could!

ABODE: How did you make the transition from blogger to buyer? What does that process involve? Anum: It was a fun and exciting prospect brought to me by the owner of Per Lei Couture in Doha. I do think influencers would

Another day, another denim

make great buyers as they generate a type of desire and lust for designers, trends and products that few are able to. I’m surprised more bloggers aren’t morphing into buyers. It’s been a great experience so far.

ABODE: What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given and what’s your advice for fledgling bloggers? Anum: Continue being authentic because it’s fresh. Carve out your own niche. Someone else’s idea is already taken!

ABODE: Finish this sentence…”You can’t always get what you want, BUT…” Anum: You can surely find a way.

ABODE: What’s your take on this new age of the ‘social media influencer’? Anum: I get it, and am a part of it, but I’m sometimes also critical of it and the ethical part of the game. I do believe in authenticity and truly advocating something you stand by. As long as you’re doing that, you’ve got my respect. Also, if you’re truly striving to turn your blog into a legitimate business and career, it’s a ton of work. As I said, I’m also working while I sleep.

ABODE: What direction do you see social media taking in coming years? Anum: I hope it will continue to have the impact it has today. It’s very influential and has found a way to tie in very well with the industry. Bloggers can now go head to head with some of the most powerful editors in the world. There’s something to be said about that.

ABODE: What is your ultimate goal? Anum: To become a household name.

ABODE: What can we look forward to next with Desert Mannequin? Anum: New projects and bigger collaborations! I’d like to continue consulting and working with young and emerging talent to help them reach a wider audience.

BODE: How difficult was it to get your start in the beauty industry, considering there is not a high demand for beauty products in Tanzania? Maya Mia: I am originally from Macedonia and moved to Tanzania when I was 19. I was the first makeup artist to start the makeup revolution in Tanzania. It was super challenging as the industry was non-existent at the time. The lack of availability of makeup was also another challenge. I had

to order all of my makeup abroad through family and friends or buy it when I traveled. A: You are a self-taught makeup artist, what kind of advice can you give our readers on how to follow their dreams on a budget? love with makeup. I started practicing with family and friends and got better each time I did it. I have been an artist from a young age (I love to paint), and my talent for art inspired me to discover the art of makeup in my teenage years. My advice to everyone would be to follow their dreams regardless of the obstacles that may come their way. A lack of finances to attend makeup school is not the end of the world, you can always practice, get better at it, and follow your dream of becoming a makeup artist whether you are certified or not. Regarding makeup products, you can always use cheaper products as what matters is the technique you apply, not so much the products that you use.

Result? A creamy texture that easily glides onto the skin to achieve that radiant glow and youthful countenance.

beauty report Let’s find out what’s hot in chilly Doha this month! compiled by marlynne de la pena

Product Alert Les Beiges by ©Chanel Ready ladies, Chanel will be launching their latest foundation this month. Chanel has injected science into Les Beiges Collection to have that natural looking skin without the weight of foundation, airy and light. How does it work? They have created Healthy Glow Booster – this singular titanium dioxide absorbs light to reflect on the skin surface creating a fresh and sheer finish. It also has SPF 25 UV protection to shield you from the sun, and it has moisturizing properties like hyaluronic acid to hydrate your skin. Working with the rest of the ingredients is the polymer that resists sweat and sebum to ensure flawless skin all day long. Not yet convinced? What's hot in town Pink Crystal and Argan Shell Body Scrub at Amoaras Spa We all love to take good care of our skin, who wouldn’t we all want to look and feel good. ABODE sought the latest skin treatment in Doha and we tried the Pink Crystal and Argan Shell Body Scrub in Amoaras Spa at Holiday Villa. We all know that scrubbing removes dead skin but do you know that it also helps to even-out your skin colour? According to the Spa Manager, Anna Flores, who has a Master’s in Spa Management and has been in the beauty sphere for about 10 years shares that our skin exfoliates naturally when younger but when you hit the big 30 the process begins to slow down. That is why it is good to have a body scrub at least once or twice a week to help lighten the skin one to two shades, but of course you have to consider what kind of products you are using. She strongly recommends this particular scrub because of its ingredients: Argan shell, pink clay, sugar crystals as well as vegetable oils rich in vitamins and minerals adapted for all skin types, it gently exfoliates, nourishes and makes the skin smoother and silkier. Moving forward let’s talk about the VIP pampering. Before the

treatment you will have to choose which Charme D’Orient perfume you prefer, it has five scents available in Amoaras, Vanilla, Amber, Fruits, Orange and Orient (Arabic fragrance). At first pink crystals will be scrubbed on the entire body then we were asked to shower to remove all the scrub along with the dead skin cells. To truly enjoy this treatment add a massage, we tried Balinese massage. Instead of using the ordinary oil for massage, we were slathered with the perfume (we chose Vanilla) and the treatment lasted for about 120 minutes. Result? Skin lighter, smooth and oozing with vanilla scent that will last for 15 hours! Pink Crystal and Argan Shell Body Scrub QR 300 Balinese Massage QR 230 For information call 4408 4085

Tips from the Pro

We asked Tina Zuccarini, the Spa Director at Doha Marriott Hotel, about her beauty tips for ladies in their 30s, 40s and 50s. She said, “Age does not determine beauty. Health, happiness and vitality determine it.” Following her mantra she lists her top five beauty tips: • Introduce a tall glass of warm water into your diet with two teaspoons of lemon juice or raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar. Drink it first thing in the morning, it will hydrate your body and really get your metabolism going. • Our lymphatic system is responsible for the carrying of toxins to our lymph nodes and only functions efficiently if we move. If we don’t move, we stagnate, just like water. Movement is life’s elixir. There is no tonic to match it. • Dehydration makes you age quickly. Hydrate yourself throughout the day by drinking plain, unflavoured still water (not carbonated) between meals (not with meals), up to two liters a day. • Wear sun protection when your outdoors. Pigmentation makes you look years older regardless of your age. • Laugh. Laugh a lot. Laugh with friends, colleagues and your loved ones, laugh at yourself. Take things lightly. Do things that make you happy daily.

Beauty Q&A

Renew, Rejuvenate and Rediscover your skin! Beauty questions answered by: Tina Zuccarini, Director of Spa & Recreation at Doha Marriott Hotel Location: The Spa at Doha Marriott Hotel

Puffy eyes, crows feet and dark spots are often the woes of many women. So how to combat these common problems that we are ashamed to admit sometimes? With over 30 years of experience in the beauty business and after managing spas in Austria, Switzerland, South Africa and the Middle East, the Spa Director at Doha Marriott Hotel, Tina Zuccarini is here to ‘exfoliateaway’ our worries and brighten up our skin with her simple yet effective remedies.

can I minimize Q.How my puffy eyes, first thing in the morning?

A.

Puffy eyes are often a sign of late nights, meals eaten too late in the evenings or too little or no sleep at all. For younger skin, it is easier to overcome puffy eyes, but as we age the puffiness tends to appear more permanently. Simple advice applies here: Eat early in the evening, reduce the consumption of heavy, fatty foods and avoid heavily salted meals. The best sleep occurs before midnight. It is ideal to go to bed by 9 – 10 pm to wake refreshed ready for the day. Tina

in my 30’s, but I think I look Q.I’m older than my age. Can you suggest an age-defying beauty regime that I can start now?

A.

Beauty is both an internal and an external affair. Fresh and live food has regenerative qualities, as do freshly squeezed juices, preferably green juices. Their healing effects are well-known. Get a juicer and drink a tall glass of green juice (from all types of leafy greens, celery, cucumber, etc.) first thing in the morning. Try to reduce the intake of fast foods. A nourished body stays younger for longer. Getting oxygen into one’s lungs has a restorative effect on one’s skin, so some form of daily exercise is also required, be it a brisk walk, a visit to the gym or a yoga session. Let it be fun. Being happy is vital. No matter what you do to look young, if your emotions are often negative, they do eventually leave their mark on your face & body. Keep your skin hydrated and apply a good quality moisturizer with sunscreen as the sun causes considerable damage to the skin. Tina

ageing crows feet below Q.Imyhave eyes, how can I lessen these

A.

I’ve always felt such an aversion to that term ‘crows feet’. To get lines like that one has to smile or laugh a lot. Isn’t that wonderful? There’s nothing ageing about that. Don’t do anything, just keep smiling! However; if it really bothers you, I’ve seen amazing results accomplished with laser treatments – done within a clinic. The Fraxel is painful but extremely effective. Tina

Amna Xoxo

A.

am exfoliating my skin three Q.Itimes a week, is that healthy

That depends on your age, skin type and type of product. Because I don’t have all the details, to play it safe, I will recommend you use a fine granular exfoliator once a week in the evenings, before applying a night cream or serum. Exfoliate three times a week and you run the risk of drying out your skin. Tina

Fatma Xoxo

have dark spots on my Q.Iface, what is the remedy?

A.

The origin of the dark spots would have to be determined. Did the spots appear due to injury, are they post acne, or post pregnancy? Did they develop after exposure to the sun? A rather broad response would be to suggest a skin lightening cream preferably recommended by a qualified skin care consultant. Over the counter skin lightening creams are often ineffective. The use of a sunscreen applied over your moisturizer and under your makeup will prevent new spots from appearing if the spots are related to sun exposure. Tina

Paulin Xoxo

creams are a Q.Neck bit above my budget,

is there an alternative product that I can use?

A.

The skin on the neck and décolleté is quite different to the face. See what happens when you scratch or injure the skin there. Any product that regenerates the skin can be used on the neck. Try cold pressed aloe vera gel with vitamin E oil. Apply the gel first and then while the skin is still moist, apply the vitamin. E oil (available at most chemists).

An intensive boost of vitamins and minerals to the skin The minute you step into the Spa and Wellness Centre at Four Seasons Hotel Doha, you feel as though you have entered into a waterfront haven of rest and tranquillity. he Spa offers Sodashi's luxurious, innovative techniques and gentle, effective all-natural products. Sodashi is an Australian brand that formulates and produces unique and innovative skin care products and spa therapies and is the world’s only 100% natural, free product devoted exclusively to the spa industry. I had a big event happening so I was looking for a facial that could give me an immediate boost of vitamins and minerals and after a consultation with my therapist, she recommended the Sodashi Thermal Infusing Facial.

WHAT EXACTLY IS THIS TREATMENT? The Sodashi Thermal Infusing Treatment is a unique facial that restores forgotten elasticity and radiance to the skin. It is tailored to your skin’s needs to purify and either deeply cleanse or nourish and incorporates a beautiful lifting, anti-ageing, stimulating facial massage followed by a thermal mask that heats up to your body’s core temperature. After a gentle cleanse, the skin is gently exfoliated with three hot compresses of the rejuvenating concentrate followed by an application of natural carrot oil to the face, neck and décolletage. A 20-minute signature facial massage with advanced anti-ageing techniques ensues, lulling the guest into complete relaxation. The skin is then prepared with Eye Lifting Gel, Rejuvenating Skin Boost and the Eye and Lip Smoother before the Plant Essence

Replenish Face Mask is applied to the face and neck. The Thermal Infusing Face Mask is applied and left for 25 minutes which heats up to the core body temperature of 37 degrees. While the mask is on, a relaxing hand and arm massage is performed. The whole experience concludes with a spritz of Calming Rose Face Mist and application of Eye and Lip Smoother and Rejuvenating Face and Neck Moisturiser.

WHAT IS IT SUPPOSED TO DO? The Thermal Infusing Face Mask heats up to 37 degrees which is the body’s core temperature; this will maximise the penetration of the essential vitamins deep into the dermal layer and into the bloodstream for maximum internal and external benefits. This, combined with the advanced facial massage, deeply nourishes the skin, increases circulation, promotes toxin drainage and stimulates the lymph system.

WHAT ARE THE FINAL RESULTS? The final result shows noticeably hydrated and toned skin with restored elasticity and radiance. Results are immediate and will continue over the following weeks due to the products being able to work at a deeper level. It is also an incredibly relaxing experience. 90 minute Thermal Indulgence QR 825 For More Information Contact Four Seasons Spa At 4494 8802

Style!

READY, SET, By Asgar Saboo Illustrations by: Andrés Ruiz Jaén www.andresruizilustrador.com

Celebrity hairstylist Asgar Saboo, who worked with Cindy Crawford and Eva Longoria, shares with us five hairstyles that will be your ticket to looking fabulous throughout the year. Let’s set off for camera-ready hair!

Kristen Stewart

Baby-lights This is the new term for highlights in 2016 and is a technique that includes applying colour to very fine strands of hair, helping it to look multi-dimensional and more natural than regular highlights. We’ve seen this look on celebrities including Allison Williams, Jessica Alba and Eva Longoria, and you can also ask your stylist to ‘handpaint’ the colour on for an even more natural effect. Babylights are a subtle but gorgeous hair trend that is great for anyone who wants to try highlights for the first time, or someone who wishes to tone down their colour and go for something natural.

Let’s twist again We’ve seen hair twists slowly making their way into our trend radar, and they’re set to be one of the biggest hair looks for 2016. These are surprisingly easy to do too, and their versatility means that the hair twist is perfect for any occasion. Start by brushing any tangles out of your hair and then place both hands where you want the twisted bun to be. At the nape of the neck looks elegant, or go for a top knot if you want something fun and modern. Simply twist the hair in one direction into a bun and then fix with hairspray and Kirby grips.

Crimp it Crimping is a fun look that feels fresh and funky for 2016, as seen on Gigi Hadid. This is perfect for straight hair and will look good for a night out or day of shopping. Hair crimping irons are not expensive and are so simple to use – simply section the hair and place the irons on the hair for 5 to 10 seconds at a time, making sure you don’t go too close to the root to keep the look modern rather than dated. Just crimp random parts of the hair for something more subtle but just as quirky. You can also cheat your way to this look by plaiting your hair before bed. Releasing the plaits will give your hair a kink that is very similar to crimping.

Go for grunge Grungy hair is surprisingly comfortable to wear and is reminiscent of style icons like Kate Moss. Of course, it will suit a casual fashion look, but it also makes a great contrast to an elegant look, as seen on Rita Ora. This looks best on hair that hasn’t been washed recently, which is perfect for anyone feeling lazy. You can use a dry shampoo to add body, or gently backcomb at the crown of the hair for some extra volume. I then recommend using a salt spray or texturizing product through the mid ends and bottom of the hair, which will add texture and attitude to your look. Your hair will look great down, or tie it up for a sexy, tousled style.

Gigi Hadid

Accessorise your locks Accessories are going to be the main attraction for next season, and this can make your hairstyle more versatile than you might initially think. To tone down a masculine look, add a fun tiara or sparkly slide, or add a vintage inspired hair-band or grip for a classic and glamorous feel. You can also modernise your locks with a slide in silver or rose gold or a metallic hair tie, as seen on catwalks including Chloe and Lanvin. 1. Reduce your consumption of animal protein. Red meat has been linked to higher incidents of prostate cancer in men, and, according to the journal Cell Metabolism, people who consume diets high in animal protein (including eggs and dairy) increase their risk of dying from cancer by four times, as compared to those who consume a diet low in animal protein or entirely plant-based. In addition, animal protein increases the strain on the kidneys of people who already suffer from diabetes or renal disease. 2. Increase your intake of fresh fruits and vegetables, as well as whole grains. High in fiber and low in calories, consuming more fresh produce and grains can help you lose weight, as well as giving your body more of the essential vitamins and minerals you need to feel healthy and energetic. 3. Stop smoking. As we all know, smoking in all forms (cigarettes, pipes, shisha) leads to an increased risk of cancer, lung disease, emphysema, heart disease, and heart attack. It also ages you prematurely, and inhibits your ability to exercise, as your lung capacity is reduced. Quitting smoking is one of the best things you can do for your health. 4. Increase your exercise levels. Regular cardio exercise reduces your risk of heart disease and stroke by lowering your cholesterol levels and reducing blood pressure. Regular physical activity can also reduce anxiety and stress levels, and improve your self-esteem as you become more physically fit.

A Chef’s vision It sometimes takes a moment of misfortune for you to be able to take a step back and reassess your life’s direction. This was the case of Evolve Founder Haitham Khalid, who, having worked as a Le Corden Bleu trained Chef for over ten years in London, sustained a back injury that led him down a path of rejuvenation and foresight. Haitham took a break from the kitchen in 2009 and set on an exploration of betterment – this journey led him to Thailand in which he fell in love with living life at its purest. Fresh foods and the study of how the body was fuelled was almost his natural calling having spent so many years in the kitchen, and his aptitude for food study was something he realized he would always be infatuated by. Having spent months traveling South East Asia, he left for the UK armed with the sport of Muay Thai and an appetite for a healthier lifestyle. Haitham qualified as a Personal Trainer and began helping people live a healthier lifestyle through fitness planning and nutritional support with his newly founded company ‘Fitness with Food.' Team Evolve After a short while, Haitham transitioned to Qatar and began to realize the real depth of the fitness market and what it takes to be truly ‘healthy’ – subsequently, Evolve was formed, working out of B/ Attitude Spa and Grand Hyatt Doha. No one individual is the same, and it seems that in today’s market people are being collectively funneled down the same route, whether it’s the latest yoga, detox or weight loss program, etc. Evolve aim to cater for YOU as an individual, as someone with a goal in mind, and a blueprint to work from. This inhouse team includes Dieticians, Biomechanists, Yogi’s, strength & conditioning coaches and many more sports-specific coaches. Clients can enjoy a program incorporating individual members of the team that

58

will ensure a safe, measured and achievable program. 360 Effect The fitness market is always evolving, fuelled by the latest crazes and technology hype. Veganism, Paleo and Juice Detox’s are all unfamiliar territories for locals in Qatar and the message of westernized concepts are often misinterpreted. With Doha being such a commercial environment it is easy to find yourself run down with deadlines and the rush of the city. Having delivered workshops to ExxonMobil, Qatari Diar, and Katara, Evolve have helped drive a positive lifestyle approach at a corporate level, something that is crucial to Qatar. Stay Motivated Ultimately, Evolve stands for a positive way of life and all that it involves, from nutrition, fitness, cognitive wellbeing to harnessing your full potential. Far from modern day service providers, the Evolve vision is to create flexibility and free thought in what works best for you. A Budget-Friendly Update On the Look of Your Home

Does your home need a fresh start for the New Year? Master Designer Perla Lichi, who designs homes for many powerful celebrities, suggests three different ways to update your interiors without breaking the bank.

Dress Up Your Windows Draperies can suddenly look very dramatic by adding a simple valance–a soft panel across the top. It blocks you from looking directly at the hardware and adds a nice finishing touch. This can be nothing more than a few yards of fabric hung on hooks or draped over a rod. If your curtains are made from a sheer or solid colour fabric, a valance in a matching print would dress them up nicely. Cornices are window treatments made of hard material such as wood that can be stained, painted or covered with fabric or wallpaper. It’s possible to combine a cornice with a valance for a very formal

60

look. You can also put a valance or a cornice over windows covered with blinds. If you are working in your primary living areas—living room, dining room, family room—create a smooth flow from room to room—especially if the rooms are adjoining. You can keep the style of your cornices similar, for example, and perhaps even the colours, but vary the pattern selection.

Add Some Mirrors In Greek mythology, Narcissus falls madly in love with his own reflection in a woodland spring. The reflective or “functional” side of mirrors has long been part of our culture. In fact, mirrors have

been used for both their decorative and functional properties in homes and public places from as far back as the 14th century, and they are just as popular in today’s interiors. Extremely flexible, mirrors come in almost any size and shape–round, oval, square, rectangular, wall-to-wall or custom cut, and they can be framed to suit any décor. With all this built-in flexibility, mirrors are an extremely helpful tool for interior designers and homeowners who are often challenged with designing around problem areas. Mirrors add beauty, make space appear larger, conceal unattractive room features, enhance light, brighten dark areas, and bring life into an otherwise drab room. For people who live in apartments or condominiums, window light can be limited. A single mirror or a grouping of mirrors can be used to creates the illusion of windows and reflect light

into the living space. In our design work, we often use mirrors to bring the outdoors in, whether it is the foliage from an attractive garden area or a magnificent ocean view. Groupings of mirrors can be effectively used in lieu of artwork behind a sofa or in a hallway. For a home filled with antiques, mirrors with similar antique style frames, such as gold leaf will be most effective. Another technique we frequently use is to position two mirrors on opposite walls to create what I call “a view to infinity.” Since the two mirrors are exactly opposite each other, when looking into one of the mirrors it is like looking into infinity. I think Narcissus would be pleased.

Change Your Accessories Are you forever impressed by those little extra touches that interior decorators or artsy

home feature friends always seem to surprise you with? Let’s explore how you can make better choices when selecting accent pieces for your home. Decorative accessories are truly the 'icing on the cake' of home furnishings, providing pure pleasure in the form of visual interest. Most of us buy accent pieces as an unplanned emotional decision. Yet, it is still possible to have a plan along with all of that spontaneity. Start with something small such as a lamp or end table. Look for items and ideas that interest you. Your unique home should have its own theme or story. Focus on colour, texture and function. Are the accessories that you are considering interesting visually? Variations in surface characteristics such as height, design, texture and detailing create personality. Accessorizing is one of the areas of décor where you have the most freedom of choice. Selection of accessories is the same as art in that you do not need to match the colours to your sofas or walls. The goal is to complement the space, to solve problems, and to add visual interest. Here’s another word of caution when buying

accessories. You can love an accessory in a store, but until you see the piece in your home–you simply can’t know for sure if it works. Make sure you have the ability to return it–just in case it doesn’t have the right colour or proportions when you place it on your table or shelf at home. The scope of available accessories ranges from what we call functional accessories, including lamps, books, mirrors, clocks and hardware to purely decorative items. These comprise artwork of all genres, flowers and foliage or greenery. Ceramics, baskets, rugs, tapestries, vases and boxes are part of the mix. Don’t forget candlesticks and candles, pillows, bookends, aquariums, needlework and display pedestals. There is no limit to creating a proper combination. First and foremost, select pieces that you love and this will make your home personalized and unique. By keeping your furnishings neutral, you can truly go in almost any direction. And feel free to change your accessories with the seasons and your changing moods.

Tips/Facts • If you are handy, create your own unique cornice design • Keep a consistent style, but vary valance or cornices from room to room by alternating colours or patterns Mirrors • Group mirrors like artwork while taking advantage of their reflective advantage • Use mirrors to create the illusion of windows • Match mirror frame style with your décor style—classic, eclectic or contemporary Accessories • If you keep your backgrounds neutral (walls, furnishings, etc.) you can add punches of any colour in your accessories. • Change accessories with the seasons and with your changing moods.

Healthy Living

With Crunch Cantina by Annabel Rooney Photography by Jessie Palanca

W

alking into Crunch Cantina, the first thing you’re likely to notice is the décor. Fresh greens, bright oranges and crisp whites allow for a healthy mindset from the get-go, encouraging you to devour the endless menu full of healthy juices, sweet treats, and light lunches. Some friends and I stopped off here on our way to a movie at Novo Cinemas, located in Medina Centrale at The Pearl for a healthy bite to eat.

I first noticed the extensive array of juices on offer and, being juice fanatics, we ordered as many as we could! For those with a sweet tooth, the Banana Nut is a perfect healthy treat unattainable at your usual restaurant – them being full of sugar and preservatives. Containing all-natural flaxseeds, sunflower seeds and pumpkin seeds, this rich and creamy, Omega-3 filled smoothie is a healthy start to any day. Next up for us dessert enthusiasts was the Blueberry Muffin smoothie, filled to the brim with Vitamin B6, banana, almond milk, and oats. Also boasting healthy properties was the highly popular

Cucumber-tini. Clean, crisp and revitalizing, this drink is the ultimate get-me-up, reinvigorating your mood, attitude and overall well-being. For the peckish diner, I would suggest one of Crunch Cantina's deliciously light gourmet sandwiches. The chicken pecan cranberry contains generous helpings of sliced chicken breast, chopped pecans and dried cranberries, all drizzled with a light mayonnaise. The creamy egg avocado is the star of the menu, however, containing a unique blend of mashed, ripe avocado and egg combined with fresh arugula and parsley. It was a wonderful find for my friends and I, as we attend the gym nearby together and sometimes emerge drained, tired and a little bit peckish! But without the addition of calorific ingredients, it’s a cheat meal we can afford! Get yourself over to the newest sandwich and juice restaurant in Doha and enjoy their freshly-made sandwiches on the go.

Ipanema

the ultimate all-you-caneat carnivore’s experience Ipanema is an authentic Brazilian Churrascaria, with a Rodizio style of service, where waiters move around with skewers and slice the food at your tables while you enjoy the live Brazilian Samba band! by MARISELA PAESANO Photography by Jessie Palanca

A

t Ipanema they serve around 15 different cuts of delectable fire roasted meats that are brought to your table, sliced and served by their gaucho chefs. You can choose from familiar meats like lamb and chicken, but also more exotic ones like the iconic picanha, a U-shaped, fat-capped top sirloin cut, beef rump caps, and chicken hearts. Whether or not you are adventurous or like to play it safe, there is something for everyone.

70

Let us guide you through the ultimate all-you-can-eat carnivore's experience, step by step. Step 1: Sit down, relax, and enjoy a house beverage while they explain the dining experience. Step 2: Head to their salad bar and discover a variety of foods to go with your meat cuts. Enjoy over 30 items including fresh cut vegetables, imported cheeses and cured meats. There is a DIY salad section as well as ready-made ones, pasta, rice and their speciality –Feijoada, a traditional Brazilian dish, which is a hearty stew of black beans. Step 3: Next step would be the meat cuts of course. Once you are ready and seated at your table, you will find a circular card that has two distinctive colours, red and green. As the words on the respective sides suggest, flip it to the green to get your meal started and red when you have had enough. Quite like a traffic light. I was not too bold in my choice of meat, so I had the typical chicken wings, lamb chops, picanha and meat cubes. They were all very tender, but I loved the incredibly savoury picanha; the fact that they import their beef from Brazil is the reason; Brazilian beef has a very strong taste compared to American and Australian ones. Most meats are flavoured simply but lavishly with salt and pepper. Still, flavours are deeply smoky, savoury and satisfying — definitely a carnivore's dream. When you want a break from the meaty meal, try the grilled pineapple with cinnamon, its light, sweet and refreshing. Step 4: If you can manage, end your meal with one of their delicious desserts. Our favourite was the bread pudding with vanilla sauce accompanied by dulce de leche; no words describe how delicious it was!

London; a cosmopolitan metropolis home to 8 million inhabitants and over 17 million visitors in 2015 is a city filled with culture, rich with history and buzzing with people from all walks of life.

I visit London twice a year; during the summer time in July, and during the winter time in December. Each stay is as memorable as the last and each encounter as unexpected as the one before but this time around, I had the pleasure of staying at a beautiful boutique hotel in the midst of Soho. The Ham Yard Hotel has an urban village feel that characteristically revolves around a picturesque, tree-filled garden. Arriving at the Ham Yard is a story on its own, with a warm and welcoming fireplace lit in the lobby, to my left the entrance to the buzzing Ham Yard restaurant and to my right, the most contemporary library room in London.

of granite and oak with double basins, a separate shower, a towel warming rack, and a deep bathtub with a TV. I think I emerged two hours later, thoroughly relaxed after endless soaking and lots of movie watching! I spent my evening at the Ham Yard restaurant on the ground floor, served by Steven, one of the many polite and friendly waiters of the evening. I was feeling adventurous, so I selected the light Burrata, roasted squash and sage butter to start, a juicy pot roasted chicken to end, and the apple cake just about got me ready for bed. My day came to a relaxing conclusion on the rooftop terrace with a steaming hot cup of tea. Other exciting amenities included in the hotel are a fitness center with a hypoxic chamber, a cinema, a spa and a 1950s bowling alley. A 2-minute walk from Piccadilly Circus tube station, this stylish hotel is the safest, most convenient way of touring London. Every room that co-owner and Design Director Kit breathes life into has a story to tell. No room is the same because no guest is the same.

After a quick check-in, I made my way up to my Luxury Junior Suite on the 4th floor and marvelled at the beauty of the individually decorated rooms that all feature floor-toceiling windows with courtyard or city views. Paddle of Life What’s with the pink wig you might ask? This is Sandee Thompson, and she’s a breast cancer survivor, a coach to Doha Wireless Warriors team, and an English instructor to one of the institutions in Qatar. Doha Wireless Warriors is a non-profit dragon boat team organized in November of 2014 with more than 50 members hailing from different countries. Join us as we ‘paddle and swing’ with Sandee.

A

BODE: When did you start with Dragon Boat Team? Sandee Thompson: I began the Doha Wireless Warriors last November 2014. I had paddled with a breast cancer dragon boat team before for two and a half years in Canada and I'm currently one of the original members of the Doha Dragons who started in October 2013 here in Doha.

ABODE: How many members are there as of now? ST: There are 18 survivors on the team (one had colon cancer, and another had cervical cancer), and the rest are breast cancer survivors. We also have about 16 others who are supporters who have a family member or loved one who have experienced cancer, or they are working with survivors in one capacity or another. We have anywhere from 12-20 paddlers in the boat at one time plus a steer and me as their coach.

other survivors. Then I was diagnosed with a recurrence of breast cancer in August of last year, 2014 and I met many people through the Qatar Cancer Society, the breast care clinic at Hamad Hospital, the physio department at Al Amal and through my GP, Dr. Georgia. They all mentioned the idea of dragon boating to patients they saw whom they thought might be interested and forwarded my email and contact information to them. The rest is history really. ABODE: How did their support help you when you learned about your breast cancer recurrence? ST: Well, the group wasn’t formed when I was re-diagnosed but organizing it and telling people about it during my visits and stays in the hospital was a lovely distraction. I wanted to share that experience in Doha and to get survivors talking about breast cancer in this country. Over 20% of all cancer in this country is breast cancer. We need an opportunity to talk about it and to get strong.

Qatar’s National Sports Day. However, a few may race with the Doha Dragons or help volunteer, so we are a presence there. ABODE: What are the health benefits of this sport especially to women who had breast cancer or still treating the illness? ST: Dragon Boating helps move your lymph system, something that cancer survivors need to do as our lymph system is compromised. They used to tell women who had breast cancer that they could no longer lift anything heavy, but this is entirely untrue. A study was done 20 years ago in my home country, Canada, which proved that breast cancer survivors are not adversely affected by exercising in this way.

So, while the Doha Wireless Warriors was created for breast cancer survivors and those people who love them, we don’t dwell on cancer. We don’t need to.

ABODE: What is your view on how people, regardless of age, are inclined to take health for granted? ST: Yes, I think people take their health for granted.
