IN THIS ISSUE...

behind the scenes

Dear Readers: Welcome to our September issue, ABODE’s first ever FASHION issue in which we bring you the latest news from the worlds of style and beauty. The new season is kicking off this month so get ready to tune in with all the fashion capitals catwalks shows and note down all the latest trends to be seen in.

Let's get serious

In our very own Catwalk Report for AW12-13 we have edited few key trends you should embrace now in order to be ahead in the style stakes. We will highlight many more in our future issues, so don t miss them out! In this issue we are also inaugurating ABODE's Men's Agenda, a style section entirely dedicated to gentlemen. It will keep us informed on what to wear and buy every month to make us feel special too. September time also means BACK to SCHOOL, so we compiled a must-have shopping list to provide our little ones a smooth (and fun) beginning of the new academic year. We also created few easy recipes of healthy packed lunches, so check them out and start experimenting your cooking skills with the help of the kids too…they will simply love it! The home section is focusing on how to revamp your décor thanks to few key budget accessories and our trusted Interior Designer Perla Lichi shows you few tricks on how to transform small spaces into royalty design rooms. In the travel section, we bring you a special guide to where to go and what to do for a special weekend away: from a paradisiac stay next door to Oman to an exotic Thailand expedition. Also in order to keep up with your healthy lifestyle resolution for the new season ahead, we have provided you an easy work out plan and we have analyzed the truth about fat burning foods. Don't forget to check out our Vitamins feature in our Health section: a very useful and simple guide on what’s best for you and why.

Pump up those mus

cles

Say Cheese!

We hope you’ll enjoy this wonderful issue as much as we did working on it as it has everything you can wish for…the start of a new season is always a good excuse to have a fresh new start in your life and we hope ABODE’s tips will help you achieve all your new goals quicker and easily, enjoy!

Rani Ilmi, Pr Executive at Z7 Communications in Dubai, opens up her wardrobe to ABODE and tells us what goes on behind the scenes in one of the most successful fashion Pr agencies of the Middle East.

H

ow did you start your career in fashion? I grew up in Dubai, and knew I wanted to work in fashion from when I was about 14. So I decided to move to New York. I got my degree in Fashion Marketing and PR and realized no class would teach me as much as internships would, so I started working and I didn’t stop for the 8 years. I worked at Gucci, Tiffany’s, Versace, Chanel and Jimmy Choo before moving to Dubai to manage the Net-a-Porter and Salvatore Ferragamo accounts at Z7 Communications. We also handle the PR for Versace, Versus, Tod’s, TAG Heuer, OSMAN, and many more. What’s your secret to juggle such a successful career? I think having a successful career in PR is directly tied to your ability to deal with stress. Also, if you genuinely love the brands you work with and their product, it’s second nature to want everyone to know about them! Describe your typical day? Typically, I'm in the office early to deal with emails. As you work with clients and editors based all around the world, being very accessible on email 24/7 is key. In the afternoon I often have a lunch meeting with an editor. If it’s during events season, you have to be prepared to be out on the social circuit at least 3 nights a week, catching up with editors and being aware of all of the new brand launches happening in the market. What does STYLE mean to you? To me, style is the ability to put together a great look, that doesn’t just consist of the most expensive pieces in your wardrobe. So many people think because their bag/ dress/shoes cost thousands, that they are

instantly the best dressed in the room, and unfortunately, that’s just not how it works. What's in your handbag? My credit card holder, makeup, and I always have workout clothes in my day bags as I am a workout fanatic! How many bags and shoes do you own? About 25 designer's bags and just about 100 pairs of shoes! Any exciting new launches and projects? I hope to continue to succeed in this industry, and am very excited about Net-a-Porter’s exclusive collections launching this Fall! •

ASmall Country,

Big Fashion Ambitions by francesca lombardo

Qatar makes its entry into Il bel Paese and buys one of its most iconic fashion brands:

VALENTINO

Q

atar is certainly leaving its mark around the world: the country's investment portfolio today spans from the real estate sector to banking and media. But this is not all: the luxury market - retail and fashion - has been an important part not only in the country's economy, which is one of the fastest growing in the world, accounting a 10 billion investment in the UK, but also, furthering, the nations 2030 national vision. After buying off probably the most famous store in the world: Harrods, a true icon of the luxury shopping, Qatar has just recently stepped into the fashion sector by acquiring the quintessential symbol of Italian style and elegance: Valentino. Purchased by a private group of the Qatari Royal family: Valentino is today, the Qatar's flagship of the investments in the luxury market. The purchase has recently sparked a great debate on Twitter where followers speculates on the exact amount of the final sales price. Although there are not official confirmations, it is believed that Valentino sales was signed the 11th July, between Mayhoola and Red & Black Lux, a company indirectly controlled by the Permira Fund and the Marzotto Family for a price ranging from $850 to $930 millions.

Valentino AW 12-13

According to Valentino CEO, Stefano Sassi's recently released statement, the Qatar's recent purchase will define a new period of strong growth for the Italian brand which over the past few years has been through some serious restructuring given the country's difficult economic situation : “We are very pleased with this transaction. In recent years, despite the ups and downs of the luxury market, the company has always worked with great intensity and with a long-term vision, aiming to fully grasp the great potential of the brand. Our work has led to a significant increase in revenues of approximately 60% between 2009 and 2012. The current positive evolution of Valentino will be further accelerated with the help of the new shareholder. Valentino was founded in 1960 by Valentino Garavani, a talented designer with a strong interest in the arts in general, a versatility and a vision then reflected in all his future collections which has seen the bright- red chiffon dresses, loved by princesses and Hollywood stars alike, as the brand's trademark. Dressing women from the highest ranks of society, Valentino name and brand has been dominating the luxury market for the past fifty years, thanks also to the iconic status of the designer himself, known also for his friendship with the stars, his elegant

personal style and his famous impeccable coiffed hair. According to analytics, the Valentino's buy is stepping stone in Qatar's vision to build a new global empire of Luxury brands around the world, which has seen in Harrods the very first step while the Valentino's purchase, the most significant one in this direction. However, the recent investment brought more to the group than just Valentino: through the deal, the private Qatar's investment group has also acquired control of the casual wear licenced M Missoni line. In the past few months, prior Valentino, Qatar has added up a new range of investments in the luxury sector to its already large portfolio - although not in the world of fashion directly - by acquiring four luxury French hotels and the a large stake in the acclaimed London's Shard skyscraper. Needless to say that speculation is already rife in the fashion sector on which will be the next luxury brand to be snapped up by the little country with big ambitions and huge investment power. •

Reinvent your hair style and spice up your make up with the latest trends. ABODE interviews UAE based Charbel of Hairwaves and Dubai based Joven Colada of Lancôme to give you the latest trends from the fashion world. Charbel is owner of HAIRWAVES beauty salon and is considered to be one of the most prominent hair-stylists, with over 18 years of experience in the UAE and the Middle East region. He came up with top picks for seasonal hairstyles, having turned the trends upside-down and bringing back the idea of simplicity in all techniques and textures, despite the complexity created around usual styles.

2Chic Bun barrel in one direction and then again in the other direction to create a ripple effect;

• Spritz everything with an aerosol shine spray.

Free Style

Here are favourite top 3 styles to update your look:

‘Free Style’ aims to target a

contemporary classy woman who likes to live with style in every occasion with selfassurance. Definitely a flexible style that can be used for the day as well as for the night-time;

‘Chic Bun’ The secret of this

updo is to combine the elegant and timeless style of a bun with a modern sexy twist, showing off facial features but not interfering with the cocktail dress. • A quick updo for short hair. Grab a handful of pins and take little sections of hair and twist them back leaving the ends sticking out so you get a messy chignon effect;

• Dry hair with a round brush;

• Spritz your bangs with a little volumizer at the roots and blow-dry them so they lay sideswept across your forehead;

• Use a large curling iron and, alternating two-inch sections, roll hair around the

• Finish with a light, fine mist of hairspray to give a long-lasting effect.

3Finger Waves For the younger ones who prefer more daring styles, Charbel created which is soft and eye-catching and perfectly reflects a creative and easygoing lady. This style offers versatility along with a relaxed look & feel.

‘Finger Waves’

• Waves are easy if you use the right combination of products. First, work some dry shampoo through your hair, you'll get volume and soak up any greasiness. • Then, use a little texture balm, warm it up in your palms and really work the product into your strands (too much will actually weigh your style down so less is definitely more here); • Flip hair upside-down and scrunch hair using a spritz of spray gel (you don't want loads of frizz to take your look from sexy to sloppy!) • To make an appointment with Charbel if you are in UAE - contact HAIRWAVES +971 2 6819579 www.hairwavesbycharbel.com

The beauty of Art Nail Let your vibrant personality shine through your nails!

by Marlynne Mallari – Dela Peùa Photography Jessie Palanca

Nail art is a creative activity that draws pictures or designs on Fingernails. It's a type of art. These days both hands and feet are seen by some as an important extension of both beauty and fashion. Not to mention that our hands are the first thing people notice when they meet us. Here are three of the latest nail techniques for you to try and get your hands noticed. 36

French Nails – The Classic

Nail Technician: Rodora Gabuya Duration: 60 minutes Cost: {75 QR} Treatment: 1. Nail technician cleaned the nails. 2. She applied moisturizer and massaged both hands. 3. Next she polished for the base coat (pinkish or nude color). 4. Here comes the tricky part, the tip coat, yet she did it like magic! 5. Once all the coats were dry, she applied a clear topcoat to protect the new French manicure.

Tip: If you want to lengthen your manicure's lifespan, make an effort to paint a clear coat on each night. Be sure it has ample time to dry completely. Nail Art – The Craze

Nail Technician: Evangeline Refuncion Duration: 45 minutes Cost: {5-15 QR}/ Nail Treatment: 1. My technician asked me what kind of color and design I want. From there she then chose from a variety of gem like arts to be attached on my nails. 2. Followed by our consultation, she cleaned, polished and shaped my little nails. 3. Then massaged both hands (so divine!). 4. The base coat was applied, then she swiftly added the flower and the little dots at the tip. 5. After a few more strokes, voila: I got a new pair of artsy nails!

Tip: To extend its life ask the technician to double coat your topcoat and always give time for your nails to fully dry.

Nail Shellac – The Newcomer

Nail Technician: Evangeline Refuncion Duration: 30 minutes Cost: {150 QR} Treatment: YSL Magenta 1. Nails were cleaned and polished. 2. She applied a layer of Base Gel 3. Then each hand was cured for 10 Seconds (Shellac UV Lamps). 4. Another coat was then applied. Hands were cured again for another 2 minutes. 5. After 2nd Layer of Shellac was applied, hands were again cured for 2 more minutes. 6. Finally top coat was applied then back in the machine again for the same time. And nails are ready to go. It will last for two weeks.

Tip: If you feel adventurous and want some arts to your nails you can inform your technician and they will gladly do it.

YSL Mascara

Dear Diary is a bright neon pink pro long wear crème lipstick. I prefer the slim style of this makeup and find the closure between the lid and body to be a sturdier compared to the chubby bullet style lipsticks that Mac are famous for. It is best for ladies who are a fan of bright colors as full shade on lip wears amazingly well! {62 QR} Available at City Centre

A Special Haven

for expectant mothers

by Marlynne Mallari - Dela Peña Photography: Jessie Palanca

As a first time mum-to-be, I am constantly amazed at the miracle of the tiny baby growing inside me. And yet, as this beautiful experience progresses, I find myself feeling tired at times and in need of pampering. For me nothing is more relaxing than a much needed massage. This month I tried a choice prenatal treatment that hit the spot.

massage was followed with an invigorating facial called Deep Pore Cleansing using Pevonia Botanica. This therapy focused on deeply cleansing the face and promoting a general sense of refreshment and well being. Too soon, my hour of indulgence was over and I came away feeling surprisingly ‘light’, with renewed energy and ready to take on the world. A 120 minute therapy (Massage and Facial) is definitely not too much time to take out of your busy schedule.I highly recommend this as a must for all mums to be!•

A

friend had recommended that I try the Pre-Natal Massage at the Bay View 26 Wellness Centre located at the Mövenpick Towers & Suites. As is well known, a massage therapy during pregnancy is a wonderful complementary choice for prenatal care. It is a healthy way to reduce stress and promote overall wellness. In fact, research shows that a massage relieves many of the normal discomforts experienced during pregnancy, such as backaches, stiff neck, leg cramps, headaches and edema (swelling). Bay View 26 Wellness Centre is well known for its pre-natal massage therapy for expectant mothers and is a wonderful and healthy must do, additional to vitamins for exceptional prenatal care.

Step 1: Preparation As I entered the spa, I could smell this sweet ginger scent lingering in the air whilst being greeted by the staff and my therapist. She ushered me to a spa room and handed me a short questionnaire to ensure I got a treatment tailor made just for my needs. Following this, my therapist prepared me for the massage. Finally, the moment I had been waiting for!

I was asked to lie down on my side, a pillow was placed in between my legs Strectch Mark and a small towel for me to hug and Control Here you have an hold on to. Living Like Royalty in Small Spaces by Perla Lichi

Small spaces, contrary to popular opinion, do not need to be boring and can actually be loaded with style! Small space decorating can also be a challenge. Careful space planning is crucial because there is literally no “room” for mistakes.

O

ne of the oldest interior design tricks, and one I use in large spaces and small, is to hang a mirror at one end of the room, or mirror an entire wall, to make it feel twice the size. I have also placed mirrors on opposite sides of the room to give the look of infinity. Work with the space you have—and make sure that you use every inch of it. As an example, if the room has any odd or awkward corners or alcoves, have custom shelves cut to fit this space. Avoiding clutter is essential. Planning for smaller spaces requires careful consideration to include storage everywhere—dual function furniture that combines function and storage. By this I mean coffee tables with built-in storage, bookcases with cabinets and open shelving, ottomans with storage, etc.

A small powder room is the perfect place to make bold decorating strokes. Here designer Perla Lichi combined copper-toned faux-painted walls, a unique round mirror and an antique dresser with a vessel sink. Photography Barry Grossman

This Arabic-themed dining room by Perla Lichi combines punches of purple over fields of gold on walls and upholstery.

Multi-purposing is a must when designing small rooms. The center custom marble top furniture doubles as a desk, table, or serving board. Custom built-in wall unit houses the TV, storage and display space. It also camouflages a hidden door (far left) that leads to a maid’s room. And bold wall color does not necessarily make a space look smaller. Bold colors and accents can be carefully added to spice up your look. I recently highlighted a link on my Facebook page where a designer had painted one wall black in a small room and it worked! What about pattern? You won’t want a lot of pattern in your small room. However one feature wall highlighted with paint or wallpaper in a bold pattern designed to give the illusion of space will make your room far from boring! Small Living Rooms / Dining Rooms First you need to decide how your living room will be utilized. Sometimes it’s one purpose, for example watching TV. More often, the room will serve several purposes. Carefully planning to allow for different uses of your room is the key to making your small space work for you.

space because every inch counts. The goal is to create a design that is as functional as it is aesthetically pleasing. A few design elements are essential: multi-purposing, playing with scale and proportion, installing proper lighting and defining the space plan. Custom furniture specifically designed for your space is the ideal way to maximize aesthetics and function. Placing a sofa completely along one wall (instead of selecting a small sofa in the center of the wall) provides ample seating and follows the rule of utilizing every inch. Having shelves built into the arms of a sofa adds a bit of extra storage without using any extra space. Large art is often the best choice for a small space. And yes, dark colors can make a small room feel larger. Carry your color scheme throughout the small space, using subtle variations. Paint walls and woodwork in the same shade. Consider painting the ceiling in a brighter shade which can make your room feel “taller.” In small spaces, the dining area is often an open area adjacent to the living or family room. Round tables in small spaces allow more seating than square tables. Small Bedrooms Here, a decision is required based on your personal preference. Ask yourself if you want your bedroom to be warm and cozy or as light and open as possible. For the warm and cozy ambiance use warm colors such as reds, golds, terra cottas and browns on walls and bed. Throw pillows and blankets, layered fabric table coverings and layered window coverings are good choices. Then add some “jewelry” and by that I mean accessories—but not too many. If your bedroom preference is light, open, airy and fresh, use cool

This media room successfully blends bold color within a small space. Everything has a function: Flat screen on the wall, storage cabinets below, upholstered wall panels for better acoustics and décor. Accessories are carefully added as a crowning touch!

In either case, ample storage is the key to keeping your small bedroom free of clutter. Under bed storage, closet systems and double duty furniture will help you keep your possessions in their place. Small bathrooms Small baths or powder rooms are a great place to try ultra-dark shades you might be afraid to use elsewhere. A powder room is the perfect place to add distinct points of luxury. This could be a hand-carved vanity or a unique vessel sink. There are literally hundreds and hundreds of styles to choose from. •

colors. Choose from blues, greens and purples. For this look, window treatments should be as simple as possible, perhaps shades alone or shades with some sheers or side panels. Match window color to wall color and, voila, your room will appear even larger. Stick to a simple color scheme and limited patterns. Just one color and white will do!

This small powder room is definitely fit for a king or queen! Vessel sinks come in a wide variety of shapes, sizes and styles to fit any décor.

Transforming Spaces with a By Suzy Q

Designing your home and choosing furniture is already a hassle, not to mention keeping up with trends that never seem to end! If you are looking for a style that’s made to last and looks good until the day it falls apart – opt for traditional European décor. This home designed by SuzAnn Kletzien was put together with an elegant French influence in mind, giving off a very inviting and soothing atmosphere.

How to get the look: • Use a color palette of celadon blue, tan, brown, gray, with hints of gold • Keep walls neutral and play up the room with color through furniture and accessories • Use vintage pieces like Louis XVI style dining chairs and keep them antiqued for a laid back look SUzY Q – Canadian Interior Design Writer www.betterdecoratingbible.com

• Hang up gold frames with old world style prints • Mix in unique pieces like mismatching vintage luggage • Bring the look together with a splash of Damask print through upholstery or throw cushions

Quick conversation piece: Print out your favorite new photos in black and white and scatter them across one wall for a vintage look!

»

Make Your Own decoupage Suitcase!

Plain vintage suitcases are pretty great but cover them in your favorite coordinating fabrics and your house just got cuter! Not only do they look cute in your home, they’re great photo props. Instructions: » First, gather your supplies. I used three vintage suitcases that I had on hand and chose three fabrics that coordinated with their colors. The color of the case will still show so keep that in mind when you’re choosing fabrics. You’ll also need Mod Podge, a paint brush, a pen, scissors, a rotary cutter (or a butter knife). Next, lay your fabric face down on the case and carefully trace into the groove of the seam. Then cut about 1/4” extra around your trace line and place it on top of your case to make sure it’s going to fit. Iron your fabric before attaching to get all the wrinkles out. » Carefully spread a thin layer of Mod-Podge over one third of your case starting at one side. It dries quickly so you want to work in sections. Line your fabric up and spread it evenly over the first third of your case making sure it covers the corners. Smooth your fabric as you attach it to the Mod-Podge. » Your fabric should hang over your edge about 1/4” or more. You can either pull it tight over the edge and trim it with your scissors before tucking the fabric in to the seam with a butter knife, or you can use a rotary cutter to simultaneously tuck it in and trim. You need to be a little more careful with the second method. Watch out for your fingers! Do this one section at a time. » When you’re dealing with corners, apply a little extra Mod-Podge to your fabric and create two little pleats before you tuck the fabric in. It’ll mimic the pleats in your suitcase nicely. You can repeat the same fabric on both sides or alternate depending on how you’re going to display them. » This project turned out to be much easier than I thought with fewer complications than expected. Give yourself about half an hour per side, per case and be sure to let one side dry completely before tackling the other.

his month, ABODE chance to peek inside the home of ABODE reader and Doha Resident, Sakala A Debrass, a die-hard art collector, whose passion rises beyond the usual preoccupations of jewelry, handbags or even shoes. At 5’11, Sakala is a former beauty queen having been crowned Miss India Runner up which led to her working as one of the top runway models for premiere fashion designers in India and around the world. Her presence and contribution to the annual VCU-Q convocation fashion week has been a staple in Doha for the last ten years. Friendly and vivacious in person, Sakala greets us on the day of the photo shoot with freshly baked cake and muffins. (Try eating anything fattening in front of a former model).

Sakala A. Debrass

As we chat over tea, in a tastefully decorated living room, Sakala explains that her passion to cultivate art comes from her mother. She says “I think of art as an extension of myself. My sensibilities have evolved over the last few years; I like the more classic sense of design like the Bauhaus and Art Deco period.

Sakala believes art is meant to be enjoyed over and over again. “I enjoy works done by Indian artists, especially the modern masters. I usually have an idea of what I want, and then will wait patiently for it. Never rush good design,” she adds. Currently the art at her home has works from artists like Arakkal Shibu, J.MS Mani, Thota Vaikuntam, Krishnappa, Mario Miranda (India) to Ibrahim Abu Rabb (from VCU-Q Gallery) Her furniture are a collection from a variety of stores in Qatar like THE One, Bo Concept and Villeroy &Bosch. Interiors Stacked table: from The ONE Versace plate: from Blue Salon Murano: Italy, Rome Antique statues

The rest of the house echoes a minimalist approach. All pieces showcased have been collected over the years. “I like quality above all else, no fake rip offs for me. Art is subjective and since I have to live with it, I must love my paintings.” When asked where she buys her Indian art from, “I buy my paintings from www.Saffronart.com or www.artmusings.com or www. indianartcollectors.com I’d say keep in mind that there is a tax on every purchase you make, so factor that cost into the piece.” While on the subject of buying art, she offers quick advice for the newbie art collectors. “Stay away from anybody who calls a piece ‘a good investment.’ That is a serious no-no, never pick up art for an investment, and buy because you love it, because honestly very few of us actually sell it.”

Fire Safety

Would you know what to do if a fire started in your home or office? Check out our fire safety tips. Coordinated by Marlynne Dela Peña

As a Project Manager, Consulting Engineering Group, Margarito Mallari understands and outlines the importance of taking proactive measures to ensure you are safe where you live. Here a list of things to check.

I

have spent almost six years in an engineering company here in Qatar and compared to other Middle East countries, Qatar places more focus on sustainabilityy and loss prevention in building design than the rest. Generally, most if not all building standards revolve around the end users of the spacehuman beings: the scale, proportion, size, and need of any space are all based on this principle. For instance, in the projects we execute in Qatar, Loss prevention ie: Life Safety, Fire Alarm, Fire Protection and Air Conditioning and Mechanical Ventilation, are some of the key factors incorporated into our designs.

Before moving in check the following in your home or office: 1. Fire escape route and your location – every building has this plan which you need to understand so as to know where you are and double check the escape route. If you find it too technical ask assistance from the building manager. Normally the route will lead you to the outside of the building in a safe assembly area or “muster area” where the fire marshal will instruct on the evacuation or re-entering the building after the fire has been secured.

2. Check the alarm system is working. 3. Check with the building manager on the availability of a fire policy, that is covering the responsibility of the tenant and the fire marshal.

4. Check for a regular fire drill for the building. 5. Check fire extinguisher availability in your premises (normally located in the kitchen) and intended only for small fire.

6. If Fire alarm is activated (hearing siren or bell), the fire marshal will instruct what

K

to do (through public address) and if not, you need to check what to do.

7. Follow preventive fire policy in your premises like turning-off all electrical equipment before leaving, oven/gas connection are turned off, extension wires are in good condition and have the correct size for the intended equipment, understand to handle fire extinguisher (for small fire). With these pro active steps, we can ensure that we are safe and secure at all times, whether at work or in our homes.

Some of the bases are the NFPA 101 and the requirements of Qatar Civil Defence Department (QCDD). In the design stage (of any building) all the requirements of Loss prevention are considered. This is to ensure up front that in any building design, the health and safety of the inhabitants is protected and QCDD ensures all standards are covered in the design. After a building is constructed and QCDD approves the occupancy, it is the

responsibility of the owner or the management of the building to take care of promoting the wellbeing of the occupants throughout the operation of the building or premises. They must commission other consultants to prepare fire safety policy for their building. The Safety Policy will cover administration of fire prevention, fire emergency response, fire drills, training/education of the use of minor fire equipment. Tenants who are intending to live or rent any building or premises must check beforehand that the safety policy is being implemented before they move in. •

With its commitment to excellence in service and quality, Chowking, an associate of Ahmed Hassan Bilal Group has opened its doors to customers in the brand new Lulu Mall in Al Khor, 50 km north of Doha near Al Sultan Beach Resort. We can’t wait to get our taste buds around every item on the menu as this successful brand from the Philippines continues to make its mark in Qatar.

C ABOUT CHOWKING: Lulu Mall, Locations: Al Khor (2nd floor food court area) Salwa Road (near Ramada Hotel) Al Saad St. (before Commercial Bank) Timings: 10:00 a.m. - 11:00 p.m. Average Meal Price: QR 30 - QR 50 Telephone No: 4431-1212 (Delivery Hotline) 4411-8816 / 4411-8817 (Al Khor) 4437-1212 (Salwa Road) 4431-4411 (Al Saad St.)

howking offers something for everyone as its extensive menu, fast, free home delivery service and reasonable prices make it one of the most popular franchises in Doha for fresh, hot Chinese cuisine. With current locations on Al Saad St. and Salwa Road, the popularity of the brand continues to expand as customers looking for a comforting dining experience flock to menu choices that are well-known and well-loved. The fourth Chowking restaurant will open in mid- October in the Al-Salam Mall in Al Mamoura. Established in the Philippines in 1985, Chowking comes from the Chinese meaning ‘above the rest’ and it’s a motto the brand holds dear as each franchise outlet continues to provide diners with a taste of excellence. Some of the most popular menu items that continue to sell out are the iconic ‘halo halo’ dessert – a mixture of shaved ice and condensed milk mixed with a variety of fruits including coconut, mango and jackfruit, topped with ice cream and decadent leche flan. Other bestsellers include the ‘asado siopao’ a fluffy, light pastry bun filled with steaming beef or chicken – it’s quick, comforting dim sum at its best. For Chowking Business Development Manager

and Acting General Manager Mr. Adam Beg, the expansion of the brand to Al Khor is a sign of positive things to come. “The new stores have been in the works for the past three years,” he says. “There’s a very large market in Al Khor and we anticipate there to be even more growth in the next couple of years.” Chowking is also making waves across the rest of Doha as its customer base continues to diversify as a result of its family-friendly atmosphere and efficient service. Mr. Ahmed Hassan Bilal, Chairman of AHB Group hopes that in the next several years the brand will continue to move ahead with more franchises popping up across the country. Mr. Bilal says “I hope to develop more restaurant chains during the first and second quarter of 2013”. Patrons to the new location above the Lulu Hypermarket in Al Khor can look forward to five or six new specials on the menu as the restaurant celebrates its opening at this charming, family-friendly locale. Chowking also offers full-service catering for parties and corporate events and can accommodate up to 70 people for events at both its Al Saad St. and Salwa Road franchises – the perfect spot to enjoy good food and great times with family and friends.

A Friendship In Progress by Nitya Shukla Photography Jessie Palanca Coordinator Marlynne Mallari Dela-Pena

n January 2012, the Polish First Lady Anna Komorowska (wife of Polish President Bronislaw Komorowski), visited Doha to participate in the Fifth International Forum of Shafallah Centre for Children with Special Needs. In fact, on the sidelines of her visit, it was announced that a special Committee of Children of Poland, (a unique organization which rewards distinguished personalities for their contributions to children's welfare each year) had nominated Her Highness Sheikha Moza for its 2011 ‘Order UÊmiechu’ award which would be conferred upon her visit to Poland. In October 2011, The Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al Thani, visited Warsaw and met the Polish head of State, President Bronisław Komorowski, followed by the two leaders signing agreements related to tourism, trade and economics. According to Mr Rostek, such agreements have bolstered the friendship ties between the two countries as more and more Polish citizens are arriving in Qatar in search of business opportunities. Here are the excerpts from the conversation that followed. ABODE: What were your impressions of Qatar when you first came in the country? RR: I came to Qatar in 2006 to establish the Embassy of Republic of Poland. Normally in this line of work, the tenure is usually 2-3 years but this has not been the case due to our special relationship with Qatar, especially after the signing of the LNG contract with Qatargas in 2008. I came here after having spent 16 years in the Middle East. Qatar is unique, our relationship is unique, which was very helpful for me as an Ambassador. From the very beginning I received a lot of support from the Qatari government, His Highness The Emir and all dignitaries ABODE: How do view the ties between the two countries?

people

RR: The political relations between the two countries are excellent which has been strengthened by the visit of Ministers and dignitaries from both sides like the visit of His Highness, The Emir to Warsaw, and the visit of the Polish First Lady Anna Komorowska to Qatar. We are also preparing for the visit of our President Bronisław Komorowski to Qatar in the coming months and he will be bringing a group of business delegation who will be ready to explore new opportunities here.

and National Heritage Bogdan Zdrojewski, who presented the Gloria Artist Medal (Polish highest medal of Honor) to Qatari Minister of Culture, Arts and Heritage, HE Dr Hamad bin Abdulaziz al-Kuwari, in recognition of his support in promoting Polish culture in Qatar. He is the first minister of culture from the Arab world to receive this honour. Besides this, we also organise classical musical concerts every year at Katara and the National Theatre to promote Polish music.

ABODE: What areas do you expect Poland to play a key role in your relationship with Qatar?

ABODE: What about tourism and other arenas?

RR: Few weeks ago we finished co hosting the 2012 UEFA European Football Championship, Euro 2012 with Ukraine. The Euro 2012 was important for Poland’s economy and its visibility. Therefore, we consider the area of sport to be an important relationship factor, now that Qatar will host the 2022 FIFA World Cup. I believe Poland has experience to share and exchange with Qatar. ABODE: In 2008, the two countries signed an LNG contract. What does this mean for Poland? RR: Poland is the first country in Eastern Europe to sign a 20 year LNG agreement with Qatar which means that it’s clear that both countries are ready to cooperate not just for now, but for long term. Following the signing we started building the LNG terminal in Swinoujscie which will be finished in 2014 when we are expecting to receive the first LNG cargo from Qatar. With this energy contract, we consider it to open a big door leading to greater cooperation between the two countries. ABODE: What about the cultural relationship between the two countries? RR: In the cultural arena, we hosted the visit of the Poland’s Minister of Culture

RR: In tourism, we are very close to opening a direct flight between Qatar and Warsaw which will be crucial for tourism and businessman. A five and a half hours flight can add a new dynamic to our relations. We also have companies who can add value in the film making area here with the latest technology, 3D, production, advertising. For example one such company has made a documentary for Qatar’s National Day which incorporates latest 3D technology. ABODE: How has Qatar changed from the time you came here? RR: From 2006 to 2012, you have in Qatar more possibilities and more avenues to be involved in a different array of cultural activities, from the Museum of Islamic Arts, to the Katara Cultural Village and you can feel the energy and culture of such an important and a beautiful country. ABODE: Lastly, what are your favourite places in Qatar? RR: As a diplomat I’m constantly busy! The Souq Waqif is a place where you can feel the Arab atmosphere, the historical and the present time. This was a much needed place we always put it as a place to visit in our program for visiting guests. During her visit our First Lady Anna Komorowska ended up spending two hours there instead of the one hour. •

ith over 15 years of experience in jewellery design and manufacturing, luxury jewellery designer Bina Goenka is the creator of visually stunning heirloom pieces that have earned her an international repute. If ‘heirloom’, ‘bespoke’ is the word you look for in jewellery designs, Bina is your go-to girl, whose creations include a tempting array of precious pendants, necklaces, bracelets, rings, earrings, anklets and wedding jewellery. Just a look at her catalogue, and we were hooked! We were informed that the ‘Bina Goenka brand exudes style and decadence, and retails from £3,000 to £125,000.’ No wonder her designs are coveted by an international clientele of distinguished VIPs and celebrities, from film stars to music industry figures, diplomats, business people and even royalty. Here are the excerpts from our delightful interview:

ABODE: You are a luxe-treprenuer, what is then your definition of luxury? BD: Luxury to me denotes a lifestyle. It is something that I believe has brilliance coupled with world class significance. Indulging in luxury is like a defining moment of glory and it is a progression that pushes you deeper to the limits of excellence. When I got into jewellery designing as a business, luxury was always one of the supreme factors that I focused on. Luxury is not just about experimenting with the most expensive and unattainable, rather it is about achieving that inconceivable level of quality and sheer class in anything that makes it a statement for the owner. When you are accustomed to luxury, by default your eye gets conditioned to assimilate the finest. ABODE: What is the name of your current collection, what makes it unique?

BD: The ‘Cleopatra Revisited.’This collection, as the name goes, is self explanatory. It is a scintillating collection featuring a whole array of bespoke jewels. Its exclusivity lies in the fact that although steeped in history, every piece has been given an identity of its own. Modern sensibilities and design coupled together make every piece of jewellery a statement piece for any occasion. ABODE: What is the response/ feedback from the Middle East, how will you define the Arabic penchant for jewellery? BD: The profile of a Bina Goenka wearer is truly that of a global entity that partakes the design ethos of adorning bold statement making fine crafted jewellery. Having said that, I will go on to add that the basic flavour of the Bina Goenka jewellery synergies itself seamlessly with the Middle Eastern market. A presentation of the collection will clearly establish that

the brand fit is so relevant for the Middle Eastern market. My Middle Eastern customer is very similar to the kind of personality I design for all over the world. My works of art are not subject to any particular country or region but have a universal appeal. He/ she is a trendsetter and exudes the essence of elegance whilst retaining a timeless and classic feel. The Arabic market does appreciate an emphatic inclusion of gold and colour in jewellery and they also prefer larger and more elaborate pieces. ABODE: You focus on the importance of heirloom pieces, why? BD: The jewellery brand Bina Goenka has a universal appeal, however retaining and underlining the essence of an Indian soul with a global persuasion. Every piece of jewellery within the brand has cherished emotional and intimate value for whoever seeks to own them. The

DNA of our brand lies in the fact that every piece qualifies as an heirloom piece with its timeless design and structure. The pressure of the stringent benchmarks set by our products pushes every individual to achieve further excellence to create what otherwise would be believed to be unachievable. On a positive note, I am achieving and yet to achieve more. I’m still a learner and I will learn infinitely.

work and passion doesn’t become overkill? BD: For me work never stops, even while I am unwinding from work or travelling for leisure my quest for anything new and the inherent inquisitiveness keep me equipped with the hunger to learn. To me, my work is my passion and hence I will never be caught complaining about it being an over kill. • The Bina Goenka brand is available internationally

ABODE: Seeing your brand, one can say this is more than just a passion! BD: Yes, definitely jewellery designing is far more than a mere passion for me, it is an intrinsic part of my existence. Work for me is worship. However clichéd it might sound, to be an entrepreneur that caters to the best it is imperative for me to touch the highest points of perfection. Perfection cannot be achieved unless it is ingrained and layered into the very system of the organization.

Corporate Social

Responsibility By Elsbeth Blekkenhorst, Co-Founder and Director of Global Women Qatar

As Corporate Social Responsibility gains momentum globally, Gulf countries such as Egypt and Saudi Arabia have taken steps to institutionalise corporate responsibility through legislation and institutions that govern business activities. The target in Qatar is to implement a Corporate Social Responsibility framework suited to the country’s economic, political and social context.

Elsbeth Blekkenhorst and Danielle Duttenhofer Founders of Global Women Qatar Global Women Qatar was established in January 2012 as Qatar’s first employment agency to focus exclusively on the recruitment of women who already reside in Qatar. We are a very dynamic, rapidly growing employment agency with both local and expatriate women in our database. Our candidates come from different educational backgrounds with a variety of qualifications and skills.

To more information please contact Danielle Duttenhofer or Elsbeth Blekkenhorst at info@globalwomenqatar.com

What is Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)? Many people are talking about it in Qatar. It is such a broad concept and can be interpreted in so many different ways. Some argue that Corporate Social Responsibility is merely window-dressing, or an attempt to pre-empt the role of governments as a watchdog over powerful multinational corporations. But what does it really mean? Basically it is about how companies manage their business processes to produce an overall positive impact on society and the continuing commitment by businesses to behave ethically and contribute to economic development while improving the quality of life of the workforce and their families as well as that of the local community and society at large. But where did this term come from and when did it come into use? It came into use in the late 1960s and early 1970s after many multinational corporations formed the term stakeholder, meaning those on whom an organisation’s

activities have an impact. The reason for putting Corporate Social Responsibility into place is for companies to take responsibility for their actions and to take care of the environment, consumers, employees, communities etc. This is all written in the company’s policy and can often be found on its website where the company promotes this policy to show they are looking after their community. Larger organisations usually have a dedicated Head and team of Corporate Social Responsibility in place. What about Corporate Social Responsibility in Qatar? In Qatar National Vision 2030 this is an important pillar. The Qatar government extends social responsibility to the business community by creating a corporate responsibility framework that will formalise an enabling environment to further contribute to the wellbeing of Qatari society. Many companies within Qatar, especially in the energy sector, are initiating and implementing corporate social responsibility programmes and projects, and some have already started

76

to align their corporate strategy with QNV 2030. The role of the private sector is also growing as it is increasingly recognising that corporate responsibility extends beyond the workplace. As Corporate Social Responsibility gains momentum globally, Gulf countries such as Egypt and Saudi Arabia have taken steps to institutionalise corporate responsibility through legislation and institutions that govern business activities. The target in Qatar is to implement a Corporate Social Responsibility framework suited to the country’s economic, political and social context, including a monitoring system. Examples Examples of companies in Qatar who already have implemented their Corporate Social Responsibility policies are Qatar Airways who are engaged and actively support various social projects at home as well as abroad such as the National Green & Clean Qatar Campaign and the Shafallah Center, Vodafone with a “Better World” specifying how they can contribute to make the world a better place with everything that they do, and

QNB “Together Forward”, who focus on six key areas which are Arts and Culture, Economic and International Affairs, Health and Environment, Social and Humanitarian efforts
Sports, and Youth and Education. Do women leaders in the organisation have any impact on Corporate Social Responsibility? Growth in women’s income, education levels, and labour participation rates make them essential participants in the global economy, and engagement with women increasingly critical to sustainable growth for every industry. Companies are realising that advancing more women to senior leadership roles

has many benefits, including increased financial performance and sustainability. Women in leadership have a positive influence on the quantity and quality of an organisation’s Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives. When business leadership includes women, society wins. Companies with more women leaders are not only more committed, on average, to corporate social responsibility—they may also be better at it, in the sense that such companies are likely to develop higherquality Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives. Leaders who highlight gender issues in Corporate Social Responsibility strategies often position their organisations for sustained growth—a payoff that extends from the company to communities and to broader society. •

Christie’s in Qatar Victoria Scott meets a globe-trotting art historian who’s on a mission to educate the world about art by Victoria Scott

Véronique Chagnon-Burke (left) with

V

eronique Chagnon-Burke is engaging and instantly likable, character traits which I’m sure have come in very handy during her 30 year career. Born in France but now an American citizen, she’s Director of Studies at Christie’s Education in New York, where she lectures in Art History. “Christie’s Education is owned by Christie’s Inc, the famous auctioneers. It’s a degree granting institution in New York City – in fact we’re the smallest university in New York state” she says. Her teaching is not limited to New York, however. Nowadays she’s taking the Christie’s brand around the world, first teaching public access courses in China and now, Qatar. How did this come about, I ask? “Well, Christie’s was invited by Katara last March to present the highlights of the Dubai sale, which takes place twice a year” she tells me. “Some of the most

interesting pieces were brought to Qatar as a preview. I was asked to put an education program together around the show, so I gave lectures on the structure of the art world. These went well, and this prompted Sai'd Costa, Curator of Visual Arts Exhibitions and Educational Programs at Katara, to ask me back to do some more on a regular basis.” I meet Veronique during the lunch break of the first of these courses, A History of Photography, at the Photographic Society at Katara. Taught over three days, it covers 1859 to the present, and looks at subjects like the invention of photography and post-war photography. Her students are a mix of men and women of many different nationalities.

“The goal is to provide access to high quality courses to people who live here, and to help local artists develop their own vision and work,” she tells me. “We’re hoping to

do three or four courses here a year. We will cover various topics, depending on what exhibitions Katara is hosting. We might cover the language of modern art. People are turned off when they see things they can’t connect with. How do you convince

Christie's experts in Doha on 20 Marc

h 2012

people that a pile of bricks is actually a work of art and not just a pile of bricks, if they don’t know what the artist is trying to say?” Divided opinions over Modern Art aside, Qatar is certainly developing a taste for fine art. Last year, The Art Newspaper named Qatar as the world’s biggest buyer in the art market.

“As someone who studies the connection of art and its relationship with politics, this is an exciting moment,” says Veronique. “In the 19th century, countries competed with art. Having a powerful art school sent the message out that you were a strong nation. In Qatar the same thing is happening now. Art adds cultural capital, and when you’ve built everything, you still need that educational and artistic capital to compete with your peers. “

Veronique is impressed with Qatar’s cultural strategy. “They seem to be doing it more organically than other Middle Eastern countries,” she says. “One of the

things I find very positive is that they want to do it on their own, rather than franchising a museum. It’s all about national pride, and pride in your heritage.” •

FLYING CARPET At the Torch by francesca moser Photography Jessie Palanca

T

his month we had the pleasure to dine in the iconic Torch Tower at the renewed Flying carpet restaurant in the majestic sports city, the Aspire Zone. The Torch Hotel is one of the most exciting venues in Doha and a must-see for any visitor. At 300 meters high and with 360 panoramic views across the city, this is currently Qatar’s tallest landmark, so whether you have a special occasion to celebrate or simply fancy treating yourself to a nice meal in a stunning location this is the place to be and Flying carpets certainly won’t let you down! Located on Mezzanine 2 level, this stunning restaurant offers international cuisine, with a modern twist, despite it’s rather Arabian name and interior. At the entrance you’ll instantly notice the unique décor that this restaurant offers: flying carpets are suspended from the ceiling like clouds, giving it a slightly magical Arabian feel. Open every day of the week, this is an all-day dining restaurant which offers a la carte menu, live cooking cuisine and if preferred an open buffet too.

Show Me The Buffet We opted for the last option as we were particularly hungry and we couldn’t wait to indulge in the wonderful creations we could spot from our table. We kicked it all off with a selection of super tasty appetizers: seafood salad, mini shrimps cocktail and mozzarella skewers. We followed with a gorgeous spicy (just the right hotness) lentil soup with croutons and finished off with grilled tuna with vegetables. Everything was simply divine and the choice was simply endless. We were really tempted to try the live cooking station, where you can choose fresh ingredients such as meat, rice and pasta and ask the chef to cook it for you. Unfortunately, we were too full by then and we had to keep some room for the desserts. Again, unbelievable variety: from oriental sweets corner to cheese boards and Lebanese Um Ali. All to die for! The overall experience at the Flying carpets was very pleasant: from the general atmosphere to the friendly service and mouthwatering cuisine, we were really impressed so we thoroughly recommend it. We’ll certainly be back soon! •

FAT

BURNING FOODS!?... Not the simple answer to a complex problem by Gloria Duran-Renderos, Nutrition Consultant, B.SC, M.P.H.

With the epidemic of overweight and obesity everyone is talking about the “so called fat-burning foods”. These are foods that will stimulate metabolism to burn more calories and loose weight. What everyone should realize that the best way to burn fat is to eat a healthier diet, implement an exercise routine and reduce stress.

B

efore speaking about fat burning foods, it is wise to remember how fats are digested, absorbed and deposited in the human body. In simple terms, fats are organic compounds with long structural chains. Depending on their nature these long chain structures are broken down by enzymes to small units called triglycerides to be able to be absorbed. Once they are absorbed they enter the bloodstream with the help of transporting metabolites, they go thru metabolic pathways and they are converted into Energy. A Fat molecule produces 9 Kcal of energy per 1 gram of fat. It takes about nine hours for a teaspoon of fat (5 grams) to be digested and absorbed. So when the body consumes lots of fat in the meals

there is a high production of energy which becomes ready to be used or ready to be stored. The amounts to use or to store will depend on the activity level of the individual and his/her ability to speed up the metabolic rate. Metabolic rate is affected not only by our own lifestyle but also by the metabolic dynamics of certain glands such as the thyroid gland, the adrenal glands, and the pituitary gland. All of these glands secrete powerful fat burning hormones and to keep them healthy we must contribute with a lifestyle which promotes healthy eating, exercise and reduced stress. FAT-BURNING FOODS The term of “Fat Burning Foods” is truly

When you eat 5 pieces of beef bacon for breakfast you are almost consuming half of your daily allowance of fat!

a misnomer. What we call “Fat burning foods”, should be called “Fat burning nutrients”. Nutrients such as vitamin C, calcium, magnesium, omega 3, monounsaturated fats, vitamin E, Iron, B complex vitamins and other trace minerals such as selenium and chromium will help directly or indirectly with the way metabolism will function to burn the energy produced by the Kilocalories or Kilojoules we eat. Obviously, the foods rich on these nutrients will have to be consumed often to affect our metabolism in a positive way, which is to burn more calories.

health

Here are my tips:

1) Learn to be a nutritarian: Someone who evaluates food for its nutrient content rather the calories it contains, or its flavor, and appealing texture.

2) Eat less empty calories foods: Be picky about nutrient density!!! Empty calories are usually those which are in processed foods, foods with sugar and fat mixtures, or foods with highly refined ingredients.

3) Consume more fiber foods: Fresh fruits and vegetables, legumes and home-roasted nuts. Whole grains are excellent but with the rise of Celiac Disease or wheat sensitivity you must make sure you can eat the whole grains of wheat, oats, barley and rye. An excellent source of fiber is ground flaxseed. 3 Tablespoons a day is about 5g of fiber. 4)

The nature of the food we eat will activate our metabolism and consequently it will burn more fat. Some of the foods being recommended by other nutritionists are: High fiber foods, lentils, lean meats, coffee, green tea, hot peppers, hot spices, energy drinks , low fat dairy and the list goes on‌.. however we must truly evaluate if some of the advised foods are truly good for us.

Did you know that when you snack three or four times a day on high sugar foods you are affecting your thyroid making it sluggish and you can develop insulin resistance. Without the intention of being sarcastic I would point out as an example two countries, Mexico and United States of America, where obesity and overweight has reached approximately 60% of the population, including children. Mexicans consume lots of hot peppers and the American people consume high amounts of coffee, lean meats, and low fat dairy products. The truth of the matter is that everyone would like to hear a simple answer to a complex problem. What they need to do to burn more fat is to change their life style including dietary habits!!! Since I conquered the war against fat and flab, coming down from a size 22 to a size 8, the points and suggestions in this article are wise guidelines gained from

Drink more water: You should drink 2 cups of water before every meal and get into the habit of drinking one liter of water before breakfast. The more hydrated you are the more efficient is your metabolism to burn fat.

5)

Take 3 TB of flax oil or olive oil everyday: Omega 3 and Monosaturated fats are known to lower cholesterol and triglycerides levels. These oils should be a part of our daily meals. Do not cook with them, rather, add them to your food.

6) Do not overload with lean animal protein: The fact that meat digestion requires more energy, does not mean you should consume more than 1g of protein per Kg of normal body weight.

7) Eat more legumes: Red beans, black beans, pinto beans, lentils, garbanzos, dried peas. They are all excellent sources of protein. In summary, when you learn to eat healthier, most foods will be Fat Burning Foods.

the long and painful journey to win the battle against poor eating habits. In my case, although I strived to maintain a daily exercise routine and meditated 15 minutes a day, my real problem was comfort food in times of stress. I loved sugar and high fat items such as cookies, cakes and deserts. When thirsty I desired a soda, a milkshake instead of a glass of water, when hungry, I thought of baked potatoes with sour cream and a nice juicy steak, accompanied by a good salad with lots of a high calorie dressing. The truth is, when trying to lose weight and keep it off, one must change poor eating habits.

Although at times will seem impossible, it can be done. •

A Slow Metabolism is the lack of lean muscle, too much stress, a diet high in simple carbohydrates (white sugar and white flours), lack of fiber, a diet high in processed and convenience foods and a lack of high intensity-short duration exercise,

Vitamins What Are They, Why Do We Need Them? by Gloria Duran-Renderos, Nutrition Consultant, B.SC, M.P.H.

V

itamins are essential nutrients required by the human body, to perform important biological functions. They are essential in the prevention of diseases. They are widely spread in nature, and we find them naturally in the foods we eat every day. However, the nutritional value of food decreases by exposure to light, air, temperature, acid or alkali, and their ability to dissolve in water. For example, great losses are usually seen with the B complex Vitamins and Vitamin C which are very much affected by temperature or exposure to air and water. There are two types of vitamins: 1. Fat soluble: Include Vitamins A, D, E and K. which means they can dilute themselves in oil. 2. Water soluble: Include B complex Vitamins (such as B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B12, Folic Acid, Biotin), and Vitamin C, because they dilute in water. It is not a good idea to overcook a food To take advantage of the wonderful supply of vitamins in foods, it is best to eat them everyday raw and cooked. Green and leafy vegetables should never be boiled. Potatoes and sweet potatoes or others which are hard and with skin should be steamed or baked with their skin on. When the food is not overcooked the nutrient loss decreases from 30% to 5% – 15% range.

Do we need vitamin supplements? Your physician might recommend a vitamin supplement in the following conditions: 1. During infancy and periods of spurt growth 2. During pregnancy and lactation 3. During periods of debilitating illnesses 4. Inadequate diets: over processed foods Other than those conditions you do not need a vitamin supplement unless you know you eat over processed foods, and you have inadequate cooking practices, such as boiling or frying. Overdoses of certain vitamins can have toxic effects and we must be careful with excessive supplementation. An overdose of water soluble vitamins is rare since the body elimination process is very efficient and the excess is voided through the urine. This is not so with the fat soluble vitamins, such as Vitamin A and Vitamin D, whereas a long term intake at levels above requirement can mean the build-up levels of such vitamins in the liver. Therefore, attention must be paid to the overall intake of these vitamins by means of taking into consideration the daily food intake and other sources to avoid overdoses and toxic effects. VITAMIN TOXICITY Vitamin Overdose Symptoms Level vitamin A 100,000 units/day

Irritability, fatigue, insomnia, painful bones and joints, abnormal bone growth, loss of hair, itchy skin, anorexia, decreased blood clotting time, birth defects, abortions. In children: malaise and fatigue, desquamation of the skin and mucous membranes, abnormal growth, and pain an tenderness in the long bones. Pseudotumour cerebri, manifesting as headache and irritability

vitamin D 4000-10,000 IU/day

Anorexia, nausea, diarrhea, muscular weakness, joint pains, calcification of soft tissues, resorption of bone. In children: weakness, lethargy, anorexia and constipation, and chronic over dosage results in hypercalcemia, nephrocalcinosis and eventually azotemia

UK Mums W

Give closer to nature® bottles their stamp of approval Brought to you by EBN SINA medical

e think closer to nature® is the perfect bottle for your newborn and most importantly 1,085 real mums agree! In an independent survey, 9 out of 10 mums agreed that the transition from breast to bottle is easy with closer to nature®, the mums also voted the closer to nature® bottle range as the best bottle choice for their baby.

Developed with parents, breast-feeding experts and top scientists, the closer to nature® bottles are intuitively designed to mimic the natural flex, feel and movement of a mum’s breast, incorporating a unique ‘most breast-like’ extra-wide teat, making it easier to switch between breast and bottle than ever before. The closer to nature® bottle range allows more comfortable and natural feeding, with your baby able to latch on the same way as he would at the breast, reducing the risk of nipple to teat confusion for combination feeders. You don’t have to just take our word for it either, here’s what Jackie Miller, Mum to Jack, 5 months, has to; “I didn’t get the hang of breast-feeding for a few weeks so used your pump and fed my baby using your bottles. After a while I tried him on my breast again and he had no problems latching on whatsoever”. A Special Care Nurse is also a fan; she says “Many of our mums are now bringing in your bottles as the premature babies find them easier to feed from, thanks to the lovely soft teats.”

The closer to nature® bottles deliver both emotional and practical benefits to mums due to distinctive features of the range: a Softer 360°silicone teat, gently elongates and flexes during feeding to mimic natural breast-feeding action a Breast-like teat shape, easier switching between breast and bottle, baby latches on in the same way as breast-feeding a Super sensitive anti-colic valve, advanced easi-vent™ technology, optimum venting during feeding, reduces risk of baby taking in air a 100% BPA & pthalate free for total reassurance

Not only is the closer to nature® ‘mumapproved’, but award-winning too – it’s even been honoured with the prestigious Mother & Baby Gold award three times, which is voted for by real mums. So it’s no wonder that closer to nature® is the UK’s number 1 newborn feeding brand with over 1 million bottles sold!

Great Buns Workout! By Jay Koodagoda, Bayview 26 Wellness Centre Photography Jessie Palanca

As it turns out having firm buns is a major trend but getting them isn’t easy. To get a more attractive derrière it is essential to improve your full body strength and stability.

T

he Gluteus Maximus is the strongest muscle in the body, yet it is commonly the most inactive as a result of sitting on it all day in the office. Tailoring and training your Glutes requires a specific work-out, that will not only improve the shape and appearance of a more pert posterior, but it will also serve to improve functionality and mobility. Women especially benefit from this type of training, which focuses on a full body workout and multiple exercises to really activate and develop these powerful and key muscles. Self-motivation Your motivation and desire to lose your fat mass will play an important factor for you to lose that fat mass. Different people have different motivating factors to want to lose weight. From enhancing their self confidence, to just being healthy and fit. The fact is that shedding those unwanted love handles is not easy. It entails a lot of sheer discipline, determination and sacrifice. If you are able to make a commitment to change, there’s a bigger chance that you’ll succeed. Ask yourself first if this is really something that you wanted to do.

3 effective

ways to lose fat mass By Allan Lloyd C. Martinez R.N. Diplomatic Club – Fitness Trainer Photography Jessie Palanca

After several years of training people to work out, I learned that the most common fitness goals are losing fat mass, muscle toning and cardiovascular strength. So I have come up with the top 3 basic ways where you can lessen if not eliminate that elusive fat mass. In order for you to lose your fat mass, you must consider these 3 factors. It includes a lot of self-motivation to have a physically active lifestyle, solid exercise program, and a simple easy to follow diet plan. 96

ABODE SEPT.indd 96

Be aware that this is not something that you will do for a short period of time and stop when you feel like quitting. The trick here is not to do too much too soon. Take it slowly but surely. What you need to understand is that you must incorporate exercise and diet in your daily routine and commit to it for at least one hour each day, 4-6 days per week, 2-3 months consistently for you to see significant results. When you are finally decided. Set a realistic goal as to how much time you can work out each week. You may also further increase your motivation by rewarding yourself with small gifts like new workout clothes, eating your favorite foods on your cheat days (times when you can eat anything you like in moderation), logging notes of your progression each time you lose a kilo of fat mass or perhaps hiring a personal trainer to give you guidance and support. After getting an overwhelming motivation, you may now go to the next step. The right exercise program and a diet plan that can compliment your individual circumstances. 8/29/12 10:36 AM

Tip 2

Solid exercise program The best thing to do is to have an exercise program and modify it according to your individual schedule and fitness level. In this age of information technology there are a lot of exercise program that you can access in the web. There’s the P90X, Insanity, Hyper-fit, Cross-fit, and many more. Whatever training program you choose it will all boils down to resistance training. The goal here is to strengthen and build lean muscle mass. It is essential to pay attention to safety and good form to reduce the risk of injury. A qualified fitness professional can help you build on a good foundation and develop a safe and effective fitness program especially if you are just a beginner in working out. I can correlate this to a car with a V4 cylinder engine as compared to a car with a V8 cylinder engine. If the two cars travel at the same distance and at the same speed. The car with the V8 engine will still burn more fuel. The more powerful your engine the more fuel it burns. The same holds true with our body. The muscle serves as an engine and the fuel serves as the calories that we eat. If we put more lean muscle mass in our body through resistance training we can burn more calories efficiently. Hence burning more fat mass in the process. According to research for every one pound of muscle mass that you gain, you will burn an additional 40-50 calories per day even if at rest. High Intensity Interval training (HIIT) Another training tool that you can incorporate with resistance training is the high intensity interval training or sprint interval. HIIT is an alternating periods of short intense cardiovascular exercise. For instance, after doing 2-3 sets of resistance training exercises. You will run on the treadmill with a maximum speed that you can do for 2-3 minutes. Then rest for a minute or two. And continue again with your resistance training. You may apply this cycle every after 2-3 exercises in the entire resistance training session. These short, intense cardio workouts will improve glucose metabolism, and improved fat burning.

Tip 3

Easy to follow diet Plan Another big factor that will contribute a lot for you to lose that fat mass is eating the right foods, in the right portions and at the right time and frequency. With regards to portioning, regulate the calories that you consume. If you want to lose the fat mass, limit your calorie intake to 1,200 to 1,500 calories per day. The key here is to expend more energy than what you consume. In terms of eating the right foods, eat varieties of fruits, vegetables, lean meat, organic chicken or egg whites, and raw nuts. Stay away from alcoholic drinks or foods that are high in glycemic index, sugar, salt, and oil. And lastly, eat 4-5 small meals per day. Don’t skip meals because you tend to over eat later.

To sum it up, there’s no such thing as quick fix in losing fat mass in a natural way. Whatever body fat percentage that you have today is a direct representation of what you have been doing and eating for the last 1-year to 6 months or even more. If it took a lot of time for you to start an exercise and diet it will also take a lot of time for you to lose those stubborn fat. Losing fat mass naturally can only be achieved through your hard work, so you have to be patient. Your readiness to change will be evidenced by your dedication to your workouts and discipline in your diet. The key here is to act now, be organized, commit and be If you need a consistent with your exercise program professional help and diet plan. and guidance in your quest towards losing your fat mass, don’t hesitate to call Diplomatic club Tel: +974 44847451 www.thediplomaticclub.com

Technoshape

By Deliah Furcoi Photography Jessie Palanca

Goodbye cutie, hello hottie results in just 12 sessions!!!

W

ith the pressure of basking in the sun of south France where the beautiful people flock this summer, the heat is on to achieve the perfect bikini bod. When someone tells you, you are cute’ it isn’t exactly the right reaction to strut that Bay watch babe strut. ‘Cute’ just doesn’t cut it... it is time to take drastic measures and fortunately I found TechnoShape. TechnoShape is the ultimate figure-fixing solution suitable for both men and women. It allows the body to lose inches in the stomach and waistline. We all tend to have fat pockets on certain parts of our bodies, unfortunately not where we want them to be. Studies have shown that this is directly related to our blood circulation. The circulatory system plays an important role in the fat burning process as blood is the vehicle for transporting oxygen, nutrients and fatty acids in the body. Apparently, if blood supply to a specific part becomes limited, the muscles will struggle to source fatty acids from these areas to use as energy. TechnoShape guarantees to concentrate on those stored excess fat on the tummy and waistline by applying advanced patented Pressure Pause Therapy (PPT) with gentle exercise. This pressure improves the circulation in the area, ensuring accelerated and targeted fat blasting. After a course of TechnoShape, the hard work may result to a flatter stomach, slimmer waist and firmer skin. Hence I put this theory to test and enrolled at the TechnoShape center at the Wyndham Hotel. There I meet Christine my therapist, coach, mentor, confidant and now really good friend.

Day 1: My first day and weighed- in at 55kgs; waist: 77.5cm;

stomach 84.7cm; and hips 87.9cm. Time to get ready and strapped in, with a heart rate monitor and the dawning of the ‘Blue belt’ which turned out to be heavier than expected. When turned on, the pellets in the belt massages the tummy area with a slight tickling sensation. Day 2: It’s the 40-minute climb. With this session, I should take advantage of the walking exercises to get my behind toned up. Day3: All sweaty from the course, I’m also in dire need to stick to the recommended carb before the therapy and protein

intake afterwards. And the tempting ice cream is definitely a big no-no! Day 4: Tummy is firmer and getting flatter! Day 5: Only had baked potato for lunch and I find walking easier, almost like a walk in the park. Day 6: Weighed-in at 53.8kgs; waist 74.9cm; stomach 81.2cm; and hips 84.8cm. I’m completely shocked with the results as I truly hadn’t really pushed myself on the treadmill. I’m even more confident that the program is waking up my fatty cells from deep slumber. Day 7: Sweat, sweat, sweat! Day 8: Looking at myself in the mirror and wondering when I should get my new bikini! Day 9: I indulged in ice cream today but with a guilty feeling so I need to push my walking speed higher. Day 10: I need results, so here I am pushing myself to the limits! Day 11: Someone noticed the difference in my step and glimpse of confidence, or to put it simply, the better me! Day 12: Finally, weighed-in at 52kgs, waist 71.2, stomach 78.3cm, and hips 81.4cm. I’m completely over the moon with an overall difference of 19.2cm lost! Unbelievable! I’m almost tearyeyed because that weight loss is almost two dress sizes down. Astounded with my new shape and renewed confidence I declare TechnoShape is the only way to go. Try for yourself first and commit to nothing less. Sign up today! •

Phuket & Krabi In 20 days words and images By Jorge Granda

Whether you are looking to see some of the most spectacular beaches on the planet, visit ancient caves, jump on an elephant and explore beautiful rainforests, or party all night long, Phuket and Krabi in Thailand have it all.

Phuket

Is an island with no land borders except two neighbouring provinces (from Northern side clockwise) Phang Nga and Krabi. Approximately the size of Singapore, Phuket is Thailand’s largest island. Where to stay While in Phuket I recommend to stay in Patong, which is the most happening place in the island (45 minutes drive away from the airport). Once in Patong there are plenty of hotels to choose from, one of the best choices is Baan Laimai Beach Resort which is located right in the heart of the city. The hotel is at the centre of the city and you can walk to pretty much everywhere that is exciting.

What to do Patong is a very lively town, ideal for young people looking to have a good time. There are plenty of streets full of pubs, restaurants, shops and massage places. As Patong has a large seafront, walking through the streets is definitely an experience. Everyone is in holiday mode, which makes the town vibrant and exciting, although you have to be prepared to be harassed by the local sales people and masseuses. Everyone tries to sell you something or practically force you to have a massage. It may seem interesting to observe in the beginning just as you are getting ready to experience this dynamic city, but after two days the constant peddling can become seriously annoying.

Shopping in Patong is extraordinary. Anything you can possibly imagine can be found in the hundreds of shops along the streets of the city and you will be shocked on how cheap it all is. Once you finish with your shopping spree and experience the nightlife you have to head off south and discover the beauty and adventure Phuket has to offer. Instead of wandering around in a rental car or a scooter, I highly recommend booking tours. The tours are well organized and not expensive; most guides speak English and can ensure you see all the interesting spots the city has to offer. The National parks are at least 45 minutes away from Patong. Tours can be booked through

the hotel, travel agencies (found in almost every corner of Patong) or you can hire your own taxi driver. Thailand in general is very cheap including hotels, shopping and dining. You can live like a king with a normal budget. Phuket is also very safe. Rafting, ATV & Elephant Trekking Thailand has beautiful rivers and impressive rainforests. In one day you can discover its breath-taking flora and fauna and squeeze in a little bit of rafting. One of the tours I recommend is the Full Day Discovery Rafting, ATV and Elephant Trek. The tour includes:

Krabi

• Pick up from the hotel (around 7:30 a.m.) • Stop at the Monkey Cave • Activity briefing and rafting training • White water rafting 5 km, mini trekking to waterfall and swimming • Riverside lunch • ATV one hour in the jungle • Elephant trekking on the rainforest • Drop off at the hotel around 5:00 p.m. From Phuket you can also take different tours that will take you to some of the most stunning beaches in Asia, including the famous Maya Bay (where the film “The Beach” was filmed). However I would recommend to visit the islands departing from Krabi, which is another province in Thailand two hours’ drive from Patong and staying there for at least a week.

Is located on the west coast of southern Thailand at the mouth of the Krabi River. The town is completely different from Patong. It is more relaxed (perfect for families and newlyweds) and has a much beautiful seafront. Where to stay Krabi has some very nice hotels, in some of them you will feel like you are actually staying in the middle of a rainforest. During my stay in Krabi I booked two different hotels as there were too many choices and I wanted to get the most out of my experience. The first hotel I stayed in was Ao Nang Paradise Resort (three minutes’ walk distance from the beach) and Ao Nang Principal located right in front of the beach. What to do Start your days by taking a walk down the beach. Krabi’s seafront is stunning and pleasant. You can have a massage, a facial or foot massage right in front of

the ocean. The masseuses are very lovely and serve you fresh fruits before starting any of the treatments. You will feel in paradise. Also there is a trail that leads to hotel up in a mountain (the highest along the seafront). While walking through the trail you can interact with monkeys (do not feed them as they can become aggressive and there is no guides or rangers that could assist you). Phi Phi Islands If you are one of the millions of people who have seen Avatar, you probably wondered where did James Cameron and his creative team got the inspiration to design the famous flying waterfalls in one of the most visually spectacular scenes in the movie. I am 100% sure the idea came from visiting the Phi Phi Islands.

I felt that I was suddenly submerged in that fantasy world. Visiting the islands is by far the highlight of a trip to Thailand. I was particularly blown away by Maya Bay, Bambo Island and Pi Leh Bay. It is impossible to describe the beauty of the landscape. There is a tour that takes you by speed boat to the best islands. The tour includes: • Pick up from the hotel + transfer to pier • Depart by speed boat, destination Phi Phi Islands • 1 Bamboo island • 2 Rantee Bay open sea snorkelling • 3 Pi Leh Bay sightseeing • 4 Lohsamah Bay snorkelling • 5 Maya Bay • 6 Monkey beach • 7 Viking Cave sightseeing (program can change depending on

weather and tides) Climate Phuket has a tropical climate, more specifically a tropical monsoon climate with a dry season from November to April and a rainy season from May to October. Average temperatures are consistent year-round. Average highs range from 29 °C (84 °F) to 33 °C (91 °F); average lows range from 23 °C (73 °F) to 26 °C (79 °F). There is a lot more to do in both Phuket and Krabi. Once you get there, you can gather as much flyers and brochures as you can so you can make informed decisions. Also speak to at least three travel agencies and the concierge of the hotel. •

Nissan Micra SL 2013,

The Joyful Ride!

by Wissam Assaf photography courtesy of nissan

A city car with an edge-small yet spacious enough, economical yet robust and smart.

T

his is the 4th generation of the Nissan Micra, a car that has proven itself in the economical city car sector since 1982. In this article we will brief you about all aspects and the drivability of the new Micra, and I can’t but start without mentioning the most striking improvement in this model, the headlights and body lines. The old frog-eye design has been replaced by a more retro design inline with the car’s overall velvety touch. Thumbs up for that! The Micra is equipped with a 4 cylinder, 16 valve 1.5L engine that delivers 99 hp with minimal noise and vibration, which places it

ahead of the game against its competitors. It drives quite nicely in the crowded roads and is fuel efficient as well thanks to its Electric Fuel Injection and lightweight. The Micra has undergone a strict diet as it weighs less than 1 Ton, which makes it one of the few amongst competition weighing less than its preceding version, with much more options fitted in. Standard accessories Enough about performance as this is not supposed to be a sports vehicle, but rather deserves a thorough insight on its equipment, design and safety features that have undergone a considerable boost

in the 2013 model. As for the equipment, I was impressed how this small car imitates luxury sedans with its “request sensor” buttons on the front doors and boot lid. The car opens and closes with a touch of that button as long as the key is in your pocket within a 0.9 meter range. The dashboard and dials are well designed and illuminated for easy access. In the immense heat of the Gulf these days, we have also admired the air-conditioning effectiveness quite a lot. The Micra SL in the Gulf market is also equipped with a long list of gadgets at a fairly low price such as auto lights, heated electric mirrors (fold-in and adjust), fog lamps, automatic/

intermittent front wipers, drive computer, 4 power windows, stereo with MP3 / CD / AUX compatibility, etc. The list is long and can extend to beauty bodywork accessories including turn signal lamps on door mirror covers. It’s only fair to mention that many of them in a car that might be underestimated by many consumers. Regarding the design, the interior lines match with the circular outer design of the car. The front windshield provides a very

plus for the Micra. In terms of practicality, controls are quite accessible and the Micra also offers steering tilt adjustment, an arm rest, two cup holders at the front and 1 at the back and few other slip in pockets. The boot could fit a sizeable suitcase along with a handbag probably, which is more than what you need on a car not designed for long journeys or road trips (the seat comfort would not help in that anyway). However, if

good visibility and the A-pillars’ positioning assists by minimizing the blind spots. You don’t get a multi-dimensionally adjustable driver’s seat, but it’s bucket-like and most drivers would find the seating position revealing enough of the road ahead, while leaving safe headroom. The averagesized driver and front passenger in this new model don’t have to sit shoulder-toshoulder anymore. The rear legroom is quite adequate for any passenger as well, and he wouldn’t hit the roof like in any other city car as the Micra is quite smooth on the road and clears humps neatly. The plastics used inside are of a higher quality than expected in the small city car category, which is a

that is not enough you can always fold the rear seat down for better storage space. safety features In terms of safety, the Micra is equipped with a driver and front passenger airbags and 3 point seatbelts for all its 5 passengers as standard on all model variants. Its standard equipment list extends to ABS brakes, Brake Assist and Electronic Brake Distribution, which is well needed on such small cars that used to overlook the importance of these safety features while seeking low price tags in the past. The body shell is built in zones, whereby a crash can be absorbed and

dispersed away from the high strength passenger cabin zone. Last but not least, driving it amidst the huge SUVs on our roads didn’t feel like we’re in a death trap like it is the case in most city cars. I liked the color we’ve driven and would recommend the Micra in flashy, joyful colors generally as it’s not meant for being driven in a Tuxedo, but a car you can use any other day. Don’t judge by the looks, visit the dealer, examine the car dimensions and options first hand and why not also book a test drive to see for yourself… if it is a city car you’re in the need of, the Micra fulfills your aspiration. •

CD Reviews

By ABODE Team

We give you the latest tunes in the market from relaxing to hard beat music. Willie Nelson * Heroes Nelson deserves a standing ovation with his most recent release. With no surprises the album is a journey of musical greatness and defines the true meaning that ‘music brings people together.’ Snoop Dogg, Merle Haggard and Kris Kristofferson are just some names to throw out there to tickle your interest.

Heaven An X Factor (UK) finalist with a smoky neo-soul voice, Rebecca Ferguson began working on her major-label debut in early 2011. She released, HEAVEN, later that year: the result is simply stunning thanks to her tremblingly intimate low notes, long yearning high notes and little growls of soul power. She co-wrote every track, including the lead single “Nothing’s real but Love”. Through this CD she definitely proved she has the hallmarks of a real star, but is also an artist in her own rights. We can t wait for her next record!

Fall to Grace Shining scores from Faith's album are "Picking Up the Pieces" and Blood, Sweat & Tears. The series of songs are ballad type variety.

Trespassing Lambert's Trespassing is currently #1 in the US (at the time this is published). His new album includes "Never Close Our Eyes" and "Cuckoo". Not too late to grab a copy!

Labrinth ‘’Electronic Earth’’ 2012, Syco Press play on your CD player and prepare to board the Mothership! This debut album by London export Timothy McKenzie aka ‘Labrinth’ creates stratospheric waves at a time when the international charts embrace UK pop-rap more than ever before. Brazen lyrics and hard-hitting beats from the outset slams down this electro-pop, dubstep crossover in its rawest, synthesised form. WARNING: may cause you to feel like you just stepped into a ‘Men in Black’ movie!
