1 Know Your Body •Examine your breasts regularly, and report any changes to your physician. 2 Get Screened • See your doctor regularly for breast exams in your 20s and 30s. • Get an annual mammogram if you are 40 years and older, or earlier if you are high risk. 3 Stay Fit • Make friends with fruits and vegetables. Their fiber, antioxidants and other nutrients can help you keep a balanced diet. • Maintain a healthy weight. Extra weight means extra risk. • Limit your alcohol intake, and toast to a healthier life. • Do not smoke, and quit if you do. • Focus on fitness. fashion insider

ABODE meets styling director at outnet.com

Eve T homas

She presents us IRIS & INK, a collection of traditional wardrobe staples mixed with contemporary, fashion forward pieces, as seen on our cover and fashion shoot this month.

Why have you created Iris & Ink? A: It was originally developed as an extension to THE OUTNET’s styling solutions offering silk shirts, cashmere crew necks and leather pants as wardrobe essentials. With Iris & Ink customers can now shop a top-to-toe look on THE OUTNET.

Why is it called Iris & Ink? A: Our customers love to mix and match something feminine with something more tough or practical. Some of our favourite fashion icons like Iris Apfel and Iris Palmer partly inspired the name and the 'ink' denotes our edgier side and nods to the fact that we sketch our own designs.

What can we expect to see in the fall collection? A: Textures such as shearling, lace and silk satin. Claret, cherry, midnight blue and dove grey. Traditional wardrobe staples such as the bomber jacket are re-worked with black vinyl detailing, two-piece suiting is given a feminine, contemporary twist, and relaxed, classic silhouettes are updated in leather and calf hair. The leather accessories include

oversized clutches, envelope shoulder bags, bowling totes, colour block shoppers, cardholders and wallets available in warm mink grey, burgundy and navy, contrasted with icy-cool tones.

Lace trousers

Where is it produced and manufactured? A: Iris & Ink is made by some of the

Jumper

best suppliers in Europe and Asia (Portugal, Bulgaria, India and China, where appropriate) who respect our attention to detail, and desire for quality at the best possible price. Fabrics such as cashmere, silk and leather are included in this collection and are generally of Italian origin. THE OUTNET has visited the factories to ensure labour conditions are met.

Do you intend for this brand to grow and become the main focus for the outnet? A: Everyone knows THE OUTNET is the place to find the best previousseason designer collections and exclusives. Iris & Ink has been designed primarily to complement our edit of past-season collections.

WHO ARE THE DESIGNERS BEHIND THE COLLECTION?

Iris & Ink is a creatively led project. It is very collaborative and based on pieces we love, want – and items that are requested by our customers every day. The creative team canvassed the online styling team (who style up to 300 mannequin looks for the website each week) and spoke to THE OUTNET’s buying and editorial teams about some of the new season colours, cuts and fabrics that excited them. The result is Iris & Ink.

Tweed jacket

Leather skirt

Why do you think customers will choose this brand rather than established brands of similar price and style? A: The sheer convenience factor! Our core customer is a busy, fashionsavvy professional. She can now simultaneously shop exceptional designer pieces and trend-led wardrobe essentials in one destination at any time – so this will have a huge Iris & Ink impact on is available her shopping exclusively at decisions. Using Dr. Renaud’s Lime Facial wash the therapist will clean the skin twice with a soothing massage. Then she will scrub the face and leave you at the facial steamer for 15 minutes. Following this you’ll receive the microdermabrasion, which clears away wornout cells, impurities and blemishes on the face. Blackhead removal and attention to pimples comes next, with the use of a laser-like machine that kills bacteria on your spots, allowing them to heal faster than usual. Aileen Andojar, PR Executive Juggling two jobs at a time (full -time mom and wife with a demanding career) is not easy and finding an opportunity to pamper herself is almost impossible. As she describes it, “I've been with this industry for six years and every day I don’t have the chance to comb my hair in between my activities. Help! I look outdated!”

Jihee’s Hairstyle Tips: 1 Aileen has a round face, so an asymmetric -line bob is the best for her face shape. 2 A medium hair length will give her a lot more volume as opposed to long hair. 3 I used Body Me from the Osis line of Schwarzkopf for the blow dry. 4 To give some shine I applied a shine spray to finish the look. 5 This hairstyle is going to be very easy for her to maintain at home.

After

Kicki’s Makeup Tips: Kicki’s Hair Colour Tips: 1 Aileen has an olive skin tone with a yellow- green undertone, which makes the skin tone colder. 2 To brighten her skin tone, I choose a colder red which contrasts with the green undertone in her skin. 3 I also made a hidden panel effect in a bright orange colour behind the fringe area, making her hair look thicker. 4 She can choose to hide the panel by parting her hair more at the side. That will bring more of the dark red colour over the panel.

1 When it comes to the makeup, make sure that the skin is clean and has moisturizer on it. 2 Here I chose to use an oil free, medium olive foundation. Then I fixed it with loose powder in a darker warm tone to make the skin look healthier. 3 To make light smoky eyes I used a metallic green black colour with a highlighting shadow in a soft, light green-silver. 4 I defined her eyes with a black eyeliner. 5 The blusher is dark pink-apricot, highlighted with shine on her upper cheekbones. 6 For her lips I used a medium plum red colour that matched the rest of the colour palette.

Jihee’s Hairstyle Tips: 1 Nevin has never tried a short haircut but I wanted to show her she can still look feminine. 2 I chose a pixie cut to bring her face features out more. 3 I cut her fringe short to long so it opens up on one side more than the other side. She can also push the hair to the side and it will give her a softer look. 4 I cut the back pretty tight. Because she has wavy hair this makes it easier for her to style at home. 5 She can have a sleek look with this haircut and also a funky spiky look.

After

Kicki’s Hair Colour Tips: 1 I decided to go for a blonde colour. 2 I need to bleach up her hair because it was coloured before and the ends were dark brown and more light brown in the roots. 3 Her skin tone is fair/ neutral, which means that she can wear blonde, cold hair colours. 4 If you decide to have a light colour like Nevin be sure your hair is in good condition. Ask your colourist what is best.

Kicki’s Makeup Tips:

Nevin Ozturk, Project Planner She wrote us about her trouble in finding the right image for herself, she’s been living in Doha for seven years and believes that now is the time to transform her unchanging appearance.

1 A neutral skin tone can wear both warm and cold colours in the makeup and I chose to work with warm, bright pastels. 2 For the eyes I used matte-eye shadows in bone white base colour and with a strong apricot/ orange colour. 3 For the eyelid I used a thick black eyeliner to define the shape of her eyes. I used thicker false eyelashes to make her eyes look more open and bright. 4 The blusher is a soft orange apricot colour that gives a highlighting effect . 5 For the lips I used coral-red lip gloss to make the lips fuller.

The Climb By Nabil Al Busaidi Photography Jessie Palanca Model Dylan of Trinity Talent Location Six Senses Spa Studio

Wishing to climb the tallest mountain but don’t know where to start? Our friend Nabil, who climbed, North Pole and Kilimanjaro, shows us how he prepared for the climb of his life!

Nabil’s Tips

There is no big secret to preparing to climb Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa. It is When Climbing a Mountain an old volcano, with a very gentle gradient in (or Kilimanjaro): mountaineering terms. The two exercises that 1 As the slope on Kilimanjaro is quite are key for preparing are walking with weights steep in places, the best preparation on your ankles and climbing stairs. When you is walking up 45 degree slopes. The attempt Kilimanjaro, you are likely to be using best approximation to this is walking up a guiding company that will provide porters to stairs. Again, there is no big secret to carry your heavy equipment, which will leave this, beyond being able to walk up stairs, you to carry a small day sack with some water, slowly, but for several hours. your camera, and a few light items. There is no 2 The key word here is slowly. As you point in training with any weight on your back. ascend higher up the mountain the air becomes thinner and it becomes harder If it is not practical to walk with weights all to exert yourself. Many people push day, then a shorter session of jogging with themselves faster than they should and weights on your ankles and water bottles in your hands is a great alternative. Also, I’ll show they succumb to altitude sickness and you four more steps for you to do at home to have to go back down the mountain. strengthen your body. Because of this, almost half of people who try Kilimanjaro fail, one of the highest failure rates for a mountain.

March on Place Use ankle weights and water bottles for extra push while marching on floor. Do this until you feel the burn on your thigh and arms about 20 times on each side.

Lunges Plant your feet on the floor then lunge your left foot forward. Be sure you can still see your toes to avoid injury. Raise the left arm to double the burn then switch to the other leg and arm. Do this six times each side.

health 2. Central Sleep Apnea (CSA): Central sleep apnea is far less common, accounting for only about 0.4 per cent of cases, and is caused by a problem with the brain's respiratory control functions. 3. Mixed Apnea, which is a combination of the two disorders. Mixed apnea accounts for around 15 percent of all cases. Sleep apnea is more common among men but women and children can also suffer from it.

Who is at Risk?

SLEEP Apnea Know the Facts By Weill Cornell Medical College in Qatar

We all know what it’s like to sleep poorly and spend the next day feeling listless, lethargic and run-down. That feeling of grogginess, constantly feeling tired and incoherent is never pleasant, but it's usually cured quickly by most of us with an early night sleep. For sufferers of a sleeping disorder called sleep apnea, however, the situation is not as simple – while the person will feel tired during the day, they will often be unaware they are not sleeping well.

What is Sleep Apnea? Sleep Apnea is a condition is characterized by low-quality sleep rather than wakefulness at night in which the breathing of the sleeping person is very shallow or paused for periods varying from at least 10 seconds to even a few minutes. The lack of oxygen jolts the sufferer out of deep sleep into a lighter state of sleep in order to restore normal breathing. Each pause in normal breathing is called an apnea and may occur as frequently as 5 to 30 times every hour. This disruption prevents the sleeping person from entering the deep sleep that the body needs in order for you to wake up feeling rested and refreshed, so a person with sleep apnea will often feel tired during the day. Apnea

is usually accompanied by snoring, and, although it is not usually noticed by the individual themselves, the condition is easily noticed by someone observing them sleeping.

Is it Serious? Dr. Mohamud Verjee, Assistant Professor of Family Medicine and Primary Care Clerkship Director at Weill Cornell Medical College in Qatar, advises that “Sleep apnea can be a very serious condition, particularly if the pauses between breaths are as long as over a minute. Your heart is still beating and blood is still circulating around your body, but your blood is not being reoxygenated as it should be.” Dr. Verjee explaines that there are 3 types of sleep apnea: 1. Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA): Obstructive sleep apnea is caused by soft tissue and muscles around the airway collapsing during sleep and obstructing or narrowing the airway, which prevents normal breathing. This is by far the most common form of sleep apnea and constitutes about 84 percent of known cases.

Dr. Verjee explained that there are several factors that make a person more at risk of suffering from sleep apnea. “Being overweight or obese certainly increases your chances of having sleep apnea. Smokers are more likely to suffer it, and drinking alcohol, especially before bedtime, causes the muscles to relax and makes apnea more likely. People with diabetes sometimes experience swelling of the tongue and other tissues, which can contribute to apnea. The condition also gets more common with age as the soft tissues and muscles around the airway become looser and more prone to collapsing and causing a blockage. In most cases of sleep apnea can be improved by making healthier lifestyle choices and with a number of treatments. “The first thing to do is to have the disorder diagnosed, so if you are concerned about excessive snoring or tiredness during the day be sure to visit your doctor,” he said. Some physicians will recommend the use of an oral splint that is worn at night to bring the lower jaw forward, which helps to keep the airway open. In other cases, doctors will advise surgery to remove soft tissue from the nasal cavity, mouth and throat. However, Dr. Verjee advises avoiding surgery where possible. One of the most common treatments for moderate to severe sleep apnea is the use of a machine called a Continuous Positive Air Pressure (CPAP) device. It will provide a good night's sleep to enjoy life.

Blue Tones for Interiors

Sara Cosgrove, head of interior design at The Studio Harrods

With a palette of tones stretching from sky to sea, shades of blue evoke a soothing sense of calm and offer infinite possibilities for interior decorating. The Studio Harrods shows us how. I thrive on looking for new ideas and fresh ways of creating clean, classic interior design. For me, a good designer never takes a day off, but is always sourcing exciting, innovative products and finishes that will look fabulous in their next project. I often find that when I am putting a new scheme together the best way is not to try too hard to find extravagant new materials in striking colour combinations, but to

select from some of the design classics. Blue is one of those classic colours with so many variations that it almost has an entire spectrum of its own. From navy to electric or turquoise to royal you will never be short of the perfect shade of blue to bring a space to life. For many people, blue is often thought of as too strong a colour and can be overlooked as an option for wallpaper or a

paint finish. I would be the first to disagree with this opinion and would say that, often with clever lighting design, blue can create a wonderfully calm atmosphere, either at home or in a more commercial environment such as a hotel or restaurant. Choose blue as part of the colour scheme in your own home by following these interior styling tips…

Accessories and Soft Furnishings Living Room By starting with a neutral palette for larger furniture pieces you can use various blue tones as accents within the design. Classic shapes of sofas and formal occasional seating can work really well when upholstered in plain fabrics. Navy blue upholstery works particularly well when contrasted with lighter tones such as cream or white for the elegant shapes by Ralph Lauren. Pale silvery-blue velvet for a classic Collins & Hayes sofa makes a lovely focal point in a relaxed reception room or Flexform offer a versatile service for those who simply cannot decide which colour to go for, whereby you can order a neutral base colour for the main sofa, combining with interchangeable loose cushions in various different colours to suit your surroundings.

Choosing a key colour to work throughout your interior design can be easily achieved with accessories and soft furnishings. I like to finish off a scheme with pops of colour in art and objets and for a more dramatic effect I’d go for heavily patterned window treatments to add a theatrical edge.

62 ABODE October.indd 62

9/25/13 2:51 PM

dĂŠcor Upholstery When selecting fabrics for upholstery and soft furnishings, some beautiful collections are available from brands such as Dedar and Rubelli. Luxurious velvets by Dedar from their Adamo & Eva collection come in in a range of gentle blues with names like Acqua Marine, Calypso and Jeans. Alternatively, choose from the Fanfara silk collection where blues are available in Atlantique, Ciel and Ocean. These options would be perfect for adding colour to finish a room. If you like patterns, Rubelli does a fabulous contemporary fabric range called Sing-Song including a funky geometric hexagonal design in deep, moody hues such as Iris.

Lighting Lighting is a way of introducing colour into a room in a subtle way. Classic floor, ceiling and table lamps from brands including Heathfield & Co, Artemis and Porto Romana can be finished with vibrant fabric covered shades to brighten up a living room, study or bedroom.

Bars and Restaurants I love the effect that has been accomplished at the Blue Bar at the Berkeley Hotel in Knightsbridge, designed by the late David Collins. It blends many different shades of blue to create one of London’s favourite venues for a cocktail. The Churchill Bar & Terrace at the Hyatt in Mayfair clashes deep blue with yellow for their bespoke upholstered seating in a deco-inspired scheme, providing a handsome space for socializing with a humidor on the terrace for an after-dinner cigar.

The best thing about using a key colour in interiors is that you can easily change it to revive your home at a fraction of the cost of redesigning the whole thing from scratch. With so many fantastic products to choose from, a total rehaul might not be such a bad idea!

10 Foods to Fight Fatigue Cosette Fakih, Diet Delights

We’d normally blame it on overwhelming work schedules or lack of sleep; but one unexpected culprit may be secretly draining our energy and rendering us sluggish and lazy all through the day: our diet! While eating too little or too much is associated with an increased feeling of fatigue; an overall healthy diet can help you drum up some energy and prevent you from feeling all worn out. If recurring yawning, a pick-me-up sugary snack and a craved nap are your only strategies to cope with hijacked energy, try these fatiguefighting foods to power through your dull day slumps.

3. Spinach Be creative! Put spinach in your pies, salads and stews… this vegetable is in fact a rich source of two major fatigue-fighters: magnesium, which levels are reduced by an elevation in stress hormones and tryptophan, an amino acid that acts as a precursor to serotonin, a neurotransmitter intimately connected to mood.

4. Yogurt

1. Guava This delicious fruit is packed with energyboosting Vitamin C. In fact, even a marginal deficiency in this vitamin was shown to cause fatigue. Stealing the show from kiwis and oranges, a single guava provides you with nearly 125 mg of Vitamin C. That’s about 1.4 times of your full day requirement and almost double the amount found in an orange.

2. Salmon Grilled, steamed, baked or in a can, this pinkish fish is one of the best sources of omega 3, an essential fatty acid which is commonly low among persons suffering from fatigue. Omega 3 has also been shown to improve attention and physiological functions.

This yummy creamy dairy that can go with every meal is actually a key to your well-being, thanks to its probiotics content. The good bacteria found in yogurt not only aid in maintaining a healthy digestive tract, but are also shown to alleviate symptoms of chronic fatigue.

already dehydrated. Keep your water bottle handy and remind yourself to drink plenty of water , even when you don’t feel the need to drink.

8. Tea Tea holds a special combination of small amounts of caffeine and L-Theanine, two components well-known for their alertnessboosting properties. According to a study published in the Journal of Biological Psychology, this combination of factors found in tea has been shown to decrease the feeling of tiredness and headaches among the studied subjects.

9. Breakfast: the Forgotten Meal How do you expect a car to run without gas?! Food is the only fuel your body can use. Start your day with a healthy breakfast to avoid feeling drained throughout the day. Even if you’re not so hungry, make your morning meal a daily routine. You’ll feel a lot perkier.

10. Lean Meats Lean meats are the best sources of iron; in fact iron absorption is highest from heme-iron sources (such as meats) rather than non-heme (vegetable sources). Ladies, this is mainly of concern to you, as iron deficiency is considered the leading cause of fatigue among women.

5. Dark Chocolate Yes…Finally some scientific basis behind our chocolate cravings. This precious pick-me-up snack, on top of its famous role in protection against heart disease, appears to also play a role in fatigue. It seems consuming dark chocolate may alleviate draining symptoms of chronic fatigue, as suggested by a study published in the Nutrition Journal.

6. Turmeric This wonder spice that gives flavour and colour to our dishes contains curcumin (a powerful antioxidant) that has been recently shown to be involved in the treatment of fatigue. Sprinkle some turmeric on your salad, lentil soup or roasted potatoes for a tasty stress-removing tang.

7. Water Dehydration is undoubtedly among the most common causes of fatigue. Erroneously, we often use thirst as an indicator to drink water. But by the time we feel thirsty, we are probably

You’re not really expected to grab a spinach pie or munch on a dash of turmeric whenever you’re feeling sluggish, but including these foods in your meals more often will help prevent symptoms of fatigue. In addition, don’t forget to eat small frequent meals, get plenty of sleep and be physically active to jumpstart your busy days.

Spaghetti with pesto Serves: 4

Ingredients:

• 375 gram dried linguine pasta • 1 cup fresh basil leaves • 2 tbsp. pine nuts toasted • 1 garlic clove crushed • 2 tbsp. grated parmesan cheese • ¼ cup extra-virgin olive oil

Chef's tip: The best way to keep an avocado from turning brown is to reduce its contact with air as much as possible and to marinate it with lime juices for a while before mixing with other ingredients.

• Cook pasta in a saucepan of boiling salted water, following packet directions until tender. Drain and put the pasta back in the pan. • While boiling, process basil, pine nuts, garlic and parmesan, scraping down sides occasionally, until almost smooth. • Add pesto to pasta and toss to combine. Serve with the shaved parmesan cheese on top.

Chef's tip: The perfect pasta is al dente ! In Italian al dente means "to the tooth," which means cooked but still firm to the bite. Generally in the west, the pasta is cooked al dente.

A: I graduated from the Anadolu University in 2002. Then I started my career with Pegasus airline. In 2004 I joined THY and I've been working for THY for nine years; six years as co-pilot and one and a half years as a flight instructor.

When did you know that you wanted to be a pilot? A: I have always wanted to be a pilot. I'm not sure why, because nobody in my family was ever a pilot nor did anything aircraft related. After high school I knew what I wanted to do so I joined the civil aviation school exam. Now I'm very happy to be a pilot. Can you share your experience of learning a skill and entering a profession that is normally led by men? A: I was the only female student pilot at civil aviation school. I took the same course and same flights with my friends. When I started to work for THY, we were only three female pilots. There were no exceptions: we all had the same ground training, same simulator and same lifes training with the other pilots. Gender does not matter, what’s important is to fly your plane safely. What has been your most memorable moment flying for Turkish Airlines? A: The most memorable moment was when I was promoted to captain. I was so happy and excited. We had

Deniz Ulke flown to Ercan airport with our fleet manager, the weather was nice. I made a vor approach for runway 29 and then ILS approach for Istanbul Ataturk airport for runway 05. After the flight our fleet manager congratulated me and he put on my new epaulette. I was so proud of myself that day.

Do you have any inspiring words to share for other young pilot enthusiasts? A: The job of a pilot is difficult, but prestigious. Airline pilots often travel thousands of kilometres and can find themselves in a different time and climate zone every day. They see all parts of the world and get to know new people almost all the time. If you like airplanes but are not absolutely dedicated to the profession, get a job doing something else and join a local flying club or purchase your own general aviation aircraft. You'll be much happier, and you can still enjoy aviation. If you think that there is nothing like the feeling of flying, run after your dreams. How do you keep yourself balanced with your flight schedules? A: I would prefer to sleep at home after a long flight, I would try to eat my meals at my house on a regular basis, try to sleep during day time if I have a flight at night, and try to find spare time to take care of my hobby. I have a daughter, she's five years old. I try to spend my time off with her. We like to travel with my family. I

people Spain’s rich artistic heritage includes stunning architecture from gothic cathedrals and castles to the modernism of Antoni Gaudi – and don’t forget this is the birthplace of Pablo Picasso. Spanish music and dance have also been catching on around the world. With so much happening in this vibrant country we speak to Her Excellency Mrs. Carmen dela Peña Corcuera to learn more about the bilateral relations between Qatar and Spain as they celebrate their National Day on October 12th. What projects are you planning to increase awareness of the Spanish culture among people in Qatar? A: We are working closely with the Qatari institutions involved with cultural, scientific and educational issues. We want to include popular artistic performances as well as exhibitions that will show Spanish cultural assets. For instance we want to celebrate more food festivals in the leading hotels. It will be also very important to promote the study of the Spanish language among Qataris as a way to better understand our culture. Just to give you an example, before Ramadan we inaugurated in Katara a photographic

exhibition about Cordoba, the old city of Qurtuba, in order to show to visitors the Arabic contribution to the Spanish culture in this specific place.

You’ve been in Qatar for a while, what is the first place would you recommend for anyone visiting this country? A: If I can choose only one place it will be The Museum of Islamic Art. First, I would like to point out the value of the collection and especially the Spanish items on display, like the collection of carved capitals dated in the 10th century. Second, the architecture of this site is unique, because it is a model of how to put together modernity and tradition in perfect harmony looking to the future. It is a masterpiece.

How many Spanish citizens live currently in Qatar? How do you connect and interact with them? A: We are witnessing a significant increase in the number of Spanish citizens living in Qatar. The number has doubled in the last two years and now we are around 1,500. I connect with them on personal basis and mainly through the Spanish associations that have been set up in the last years. On the business sector we have the Spanish Business Council and the Spanish Ladies Association. Both of them are doing a great job to reach out the Spanish community at different levels.

In European countries, Spain is a known tourist destination, how are you boosting tourism here in Qatar? A: You are right, tourism is booming in Spain. This year from January to the end of July we have received more than 34 million and eight million visitors in July alone. Last year 2012 we reached almost 60 million. Maybe because we have all the elements needed to attract travellers: beaches, sun, mountains, snow, culture, history and gastronomy, as well as wonderful kinds of accommodation. Of course, we want more Qataris to visit Spain for the reasons above, as well as for the meaning of places like Granada, Cordoba and Seville for the Arab culture. We want also Qataris to discover modern Spain and to extend their knowledge of the country.

Spain Business Council in Qatar was created to foster business ties between two countries. What major developments have happened since the Emir’s visit in Spain in 2011? A: The visit of H.H. The Emir was a meaningful step in the development of our bilateral relations. Since then we have continued working together with Qatar in a wide range of sectors of mutual interest to enhance the For more information cooperation. Mrs. Figen Yunt

Noble Character Feature Coordinated by Marlynne Mallari – Dela Pena Photography Jessie Palanca

What do we know about the women standing behind the men we praise for success? ABODE sat down with the Turkish Ambassador’s wife, Mrs. Figen Yunt, to catch a glimpse of a day in her life.

A

t a young age she knew she would be striding in the world of diplomats. Growing up in the culturally rich capital of Ankara, Turkey, Mrs. Yunt was drawn to her rich heritage as well as societies very different from her own. Enthused with deep knowledge of her nation’s traditions and a desire to touch people’s lives has helped her to support her successful husband, outgoing Ambassador Emre Yunt.

Rich Heritage The ABODE team was welcomed at the new residence of the Turkish Ambassador. The house was one year in the making and it has 20 rooms, two dining areas and elevators. From carpets to the window blinds, everything – even the cats – is from Turkey. Mrs. Yunt shared that the rules of the house are to make sure all furnishings and displays are all originally from their homeland... Including their chef! She is a true supporter of their home-grown crafts, conveying that the products' intricate designs and high quality are reflective of their culture.

Works Her husband’s term is about to finish, but according to her they have worked really hard to build the Turkish community. Other than the new Embassy and Turkish Ambassador’s Residence, one of the principal projects they are proud of is the future Turkish School to be built near the airport area. Other programs to her credit were a breast cancer awareness program, all about plastic surgery, Turkish fashion designer Sedef Gur and ceramic artists from Turkey. Through these channels she hopes to educate

and raise awareness of Turkish culture to her countrymen and to the people in Qatar.

Fashion Having spent two years as a model, Mrs. Yunt is not new to the fashion world. She articulated that her style is classy, sophisticated and unique. She explained that it is very important to present herself well, as she’s not only representing herself but her country as well. She loves Paul Smith, Tory Burch, Jimmy Choo and Dior.

Travel and Hobbies Constant travel is part of their “system”, as she calls it, they jump from one place to another. Building a life then relocating to another is hard, but she believes that it is essential and opens up sequential opportunities to meet new people and build new projects. If she’s not attending meetings or diplomatic engagements, she paints on porcelain, saying it’s a good way to give something personalized to friends. Mrs. Yunt wants to be healthy and makes it a point to exercise every day, also joining friends for dancing and she's even organized a yoga class for them. When she has time to spare she can often be found reading a book. She said she’s drawn to Turkish literature and likewise watches Turkish TV series, which are very popular. Mrs. Yunt believes that she is destined to do many good things, saying “I love what I am doing, that I am part of something really wonderful, to help my country, countrymen and my family. There is nothing hard unless you give up on something noble.”

You boast more than 25 years of experience in the hospitality business. What was/is the most essential skill to succeed? A: Having the passion for hospitality and quality service, which leads to establishing good relations with key stakeholders. Also, leadership and knowledge that is conveyed to like-minded team members and the talent of keeping my team motivated to deliver exceptional service.

How do you deal with the challenge of managing hundreds of people? A: I don’t perceive managing hundreds of

Being captain of a ship with hundreds of crew cannot be an easy task but Andreas Jersabeck, general manager of Hilton Doha, views his role as more of an opportunity than a challenge. Your hotel is strategically established in the business heart of Qatar where competition is strong. What sets you apart from competitors? A: We belong to the leading global hospitality company, Hilton Worldwide, which operates almost 4,000 hotels in 90 countries and territories and has more than 34 million Honors members. Hilton Doha is strategically located in the West

Bay diplomatic area, only 15 minutes from Doha International Airport. The key points of interest are the direct access to a private beach and spa, including more than 300 all sea-view rooms and suites, as well as a temperature controlled infinity swimming pool. people as a challenge; I consider that an opportunity and it's a basic skill to achieve results. Through my years of experience and my passion for excellence, I acquired the knowledge to perform with people and for people. That is the essence of the true hospitality industry. Additionally, I think it needs special skills to train people of different backgrounds, cultures and traditions to perform effortlessly as one team.

What captivated you in this business? A: From an early age, I was passionate about hospitality, the lifestyle and the opportunity to travel around the world, to meet different people and learn about new cultures. I started my career in food and beverage, which I consider the heart of the operations.

How do you see tourism in Qatar in five years’ time? A: The World Cup placed Doha on a fast-track for hospitality development. Once all projects underway are actualized, including the modernization of Doha Exhibition Center, Doha Festival City project and the new Hamad International Airport, the opportunities will then lie in the Leisure segment.

Where do you see the café and restaurant culture in Qatar going? A: It is no secret that Arabs and restaurants are fond of one another! People here have a great appreciation for good food and have recently developed a taste for nice coffee shops. Doha has attracted all types of restaurants and cafés, from Shake-Shack to Hakkasan and from Starbucks to Segafredo. I see Qatar’s restaurant and café culture growing rapidly over the years as it continues to attract names such as Chef Gordon Ramsay, Chef Alain Ducasse, and Chef Nobu.

Breast Cancer and your Work Life By Danielle Duttenhofer

Imagine, you are living your life in a satisfying way, when all of a sudden you get confronted with a breast cancer diagnosis. Your world can be turned upside down and this article is, thanks to research by the Breast Cancer Association (breastcancer.org), a practical guidance in a time of turmoil. Telling Your Boss and Colleagues About Your Breast Cancer Diagnosis The first thing you could ask yourself is: “ should I tell?”. You don’t have to tell anyone at work, unless it is apparent that your diagnosis or treatment will interfere with your ability to work or your work schedule. So if you decide to tell, keep in mind that people may react differently.

• Explain that you will keep everyone posted on your health as needed. Allow colleagues to ask some questions about your situation. At the same time, if they seem to be asking too many questions, let them know that you appreciate their concern, but that you’d like to focus on work. • Discuss a possible change in your appearance. You may experience hair loss, for example.

Working During Treatment While some people choose to take some time off from work during treatment, others decide to continue working. If you’ve chosen to work during your treatment, let your doctor know. Your doctor may be able to schedule treatments around your working hours or give you suggestions on dealing with work stress .

• Have the conversation in a comfortable, yet private area.

Sometimes, people experience thinking and memory problems, and such cognitive effects can have an impact on work. If you’re finding that it’s hard to stay focused, or you’re forgetting important things, it may be helpful to keep a work journal. In your journal, you may want to:

• Talk to your colleagues in smaller groups, to make conversation easier.

• Record meetings and appointments on paper with time and date.

• Assure your team of your commitment to your job.

• Track deadlines. List when things are due.

• Don’t be afraid to ask your colleagues for help and understanding.

• Make a to-do list and add to it each time you think of something new. Check off items as you accomplish them.

Your comfort is the most important, so do what feels right for you. Here are some tips:

An employment may be terminated at the end of the 14th week of sick leave, if it was evident by a licensed physician report, approved by the employer, that the employee is unable to continue his work at that time. Nothing in this article violates the right of the employee for any end of service compensation. Also the absence of the employee because of illness (sick leave) for the duration of 14 weeks shall not be considered an interruption of his continuous service.

• Set realistic goals for tasks to be completed. • Keep a written schedule to help you remember your work days and days off.

Labour Laws and Sick Leave In the Labour Law of the State of Qatar, Part 7, article 82 deals with sick leave. According to this law an employee who has spent six continuous months of employment shall have the right to a paid sick leave, provided the sickness is certified by a licensed physician approved by the employer, within the following limits: • Two weeks with full pay, • Then four weeks with half pay. After these six weeks of paid sick leave, the employee may have a sick leave without pay until they are able to return to his work and perform duties properly, or resigns employment or employment is terminated for health reasons.

If your company does not include a short-term disability plan, for after the 6 weeks, as part of a benefit package, you may want to purchase a disability insurance policy from an insurance agent or a financial planner. Talk to your human resources department about what your company offers and to find out if you are eligible.

Looking for a New Job If you’re looking for a new job, you might be wondering where your health status fits into the process. Remember, when you’re interviewing for a new job, you don’t have to tell your prospective employer about your health status. If questions do come up while interviewing, you can be discrete, yet honest. For example, if you are asked about a gap in your resume, you might respond that you had a health issue that was treated and resolved and that you’re ready to work. Focus on your skills and abilities. If you are still in treatment and have any accommodations that need to be met, such as a flexible schedule, you do need to let your potential employer know. Reassure your potential employer that your work ethic will not be compromised.

a rack-and-pinion steering unit or other steering parts. Improper tire alignment will shorten the life of your tires as well as cause poor handling. If your steering is stiffer than normal or the vehicle pulls to one side, you probably have an alignment problem.

Top off your brake fluid: Check brake fluid monthly. Wipe dirt from the master cylinder lid before you open it. If you need fluid, add the type recommended by your car’s maker. Never substitute other fluids, such as transmission or power-steering fluid. And don’t use brake fluid from a previously opened container. Once exposed to air, brake fluid absorbs moisture and contaminates easily.

Maintain your transmission: Change automatic transmission fluid and filter after the first 5,000 miles (8,000 km) and after every 25,000 miles (40,000 km) or two years thereafter, or as recommended in your owner’s manual.

Keep your new car in tip top shape with the following auto care and maintenance tips!

Proper inflation of your tires: If you want to get every last mile out of your tires, get yourself a tire pressure gauge and use it at least once a month (more in hot weather) to keep your tires inflated to the recommendation in the vehicle’s owner’s manual.

Drive carefully: Do not race your car’s engine during start-up. This is a quick way to add years of wear to your engine. Accelerate slowly when you begin your drive. The most wear to the engine and drive train Rotate your tires: Rotating your occurs in the first ten to twenty minutes of tires helps to distribute tire wear evenly operation. Put less strain on your engine and ensures that you’ll get the maximum and automatic transmission by shifting to road life out of them. The first rotation is neutral at red lights. Otherwise, the engine especially important. Your owner’s manual is still working to push the car even while should specify both rotation period and it’s stopped. When turning your steering pattern. If not, rotate your tires every 6,000 wheel, don’t hold it in an extreme right or left to 7,500 miles (9,700 to 12,000 km) — position for more than a few seconds. Doing your tire dealer should know the correct so can damage the power-steering pump. pattern of tire rotation. Washer fluid only: Don’t add water to the windshield washer reservoir. It won’t clean as well as washer fluid. Don’t try to run your windshield washer system once you suspect there’s no more fluid in the tank, or you may damage the washer fluid pump.

Have wheel alignment checked: Have your car’s wheel alignment checked every 30,000 miles (48,000 km), or as recommended in your owner’s manual. Also have it checked after buying new tires and when you replace

Spark plugs do need changing: The advent of electronic ignition and on-board computers has eliminated the need for regular tune-ups, but you still need to change your spark plugs. Many manufacturers recommend changing plugs every 30,000 or 40,000 miles (48,000 or 64,000 km

Don’t mix coolants: Avoid mixing coolants that are different in colour. If your coolant is pink, don’t add a green formulation to it. Otherwise, you’ll end up with a thick solution that won’t do its job. Use only the coolant specified in your owner’s manual. Check power-steering fluid: Check the power-steering fluid once a month with the car warmed up. If the level is low, have the hoses and pump inspected for leaks. In addition to making your car difficult to steer, low power-steering fluid will damage the power-steering pump. Be sure to use the powersteering fluid recommended for you car.
