Buthaina Al Ansari was recently ranked 19th on the list of 100 Most Powerful Arab Women (2012) and chosen Business Women of the Year (2011) by the Arabian Business Magazine. A Senior Director at Qatar Telecom, she is also devoted to her roles as entrepreneur, daughter, wife and mother. She’s a woman with big dreams, for her country and for her life and what’s remarkable is you can trust her to find the path to realize each one. If you are a woman in Qatar, sooner or later her words or her actions will touch your life in some way.

24

B

uthaina Al Ansari wants you to smile… a lot and always. And then she wants you to forge ahead in life, educate yourself, work on your goals, enhance your knowledge constantly and be the trailblazer in whatever it is you want to achieve. The woman who makes this ‘smile and achieve’ attitude part of her core values was recently rated 19th among 100 Most Powerful Arabs in Middle East, 23rd Among 50 Most Powerful Men and Women in Qatari Community (2012) and 67th of the 100 Most Powerful Women in the Middle East (2011) by Arabian Business Magazine. In 2009 she was 2nd runner up for Best Qatari Professional Woman having been nominated for her work on Qatarisation which was the subject of the competition. An inspiring business and social entrepreneur, Buthaina has made it her mission to dream big for her country, the women of Qatar and herself. Senior Director in the Human Resource Department at Qatar Telecom, Buthaina is also the founder and chairperson of Qatariat T&D holding company, a wellknown enterprise that helps Qatari women advance into the workforce. Yet another feather in her cap was being hand-picked to represent Qatar along with Sheikha Hanadi Al-Thani at a special gathering for Muslim Entrepreneurs in Washington DC in 2008. While there she met the President of the United States, Barack Obama and Secretary of State, Hilary Clinton, which have become cherished memories. On a bright Friday morning she opens up her home and her life to the ABODE team and what emerges is a story filled with inspiration and groundbreaking thinking.

Finding Talent at QTel As we settle for the interview, one of the first things we enquire about is her current role at Qatar Telecom, to which she replies “I always say the HR department is a supporting department or a facilitating department. We can support in making the decision, but it is their department and they know their business.” A people’s person, Buthaina gravitated to Human Resource after a earning a Master’s Degree in Business Management/HR Strategic

ABODE

Planning from Qatar University. “My purpose is to get the right people,” she says. For Buthaina, in every company, humans are the most important capital and she’s dedicated to finding the right person for the job. She is committed to ensuring that the new generation of Qatari students finds work opportunities in Qatar Telecom that are apt to their talent. Qatarisation (initiated by the Department of Labor) is an important project for her and she is very excited about Qatar Telecom’s participation in the Career Fest 2012, where the company is a gold sponsor. “It’s not just a matter of filtering the number of Qataris but targeting quality people who are qualified and talented. I love the experience because it shows how our government is taking care of our students; that is, our sons and daughters who are graduating will get proper positions as per their qualification and specialization. That’s my real target for 2012.” And it’s one of many, since Buthaina has a multi-faceted personality with diverse interests. She also has a keen interest in supporting; nurturing and promoting professional women and businesswomen in Qatar. For her, education and knowledge enhancement are the tools with which one can build a solid foundation. Buthaina followed her MBA degree with a Master’s degree from American University in Cairo and is currently pursuing a Doctorate of Business Degree online with Liverpool University, UK. “You need to enhance

feature

your knowledge to know what people on the other side of the world are thinking, what is new in the market…especially in my field, HR, as it’s not only training and recruitment and personnel and wages, its beyond that, it’s an innovative area.” Her company Qatariat incorporates three different companies with the unified aim to help develop women’s knowledge, enhance their confidence and help them innovate so they can face life’s challenges: Qatariat Training and Development, which targets Qatari women in Doha to develop their skills and expertise; Qatariat Magazine, a magazine for businesswomen that covers local and regional news of businesswomen, including their achievements, social contributions and their work problems and related issues; and Qatariat Development Consultancy, which targets both women and men in developing business plans and restructuring issues.

I want to develop the Qatari women, bring them and their products to the market. Because we are a small community we know each other, but we do not know who is doing what. So via the Wedding Journal, we created a platform for them, to enhance their exposure to the community.

Creating the Wedding Journal Her business sense has a rather creative touch. Last year Buthaina produced Qatar’s first Wedding Journal, a directory that had every wedding-related resource one might need in Qatar. Her eyes light up as she says, “When I did a market research in the Qatari market, I found that the majority of women follow trends [in] fashion, food side, cosmetics, fashion

design and accessories. So I thought, why do we not have a directory to guide new brides for all things (henna, rings, makeup) related to a wedding day?” Having received an overwhelmingly successful response, she has decided to bring it back for a second edition for the iWed Expo(April 1-4, 2012), but she’s taking it to the next level:This year during the iWed Expo(April 1-4, 2012) Buthaina will be collaborating with ABODE and Qatar Happening Executive Director Moona Masri Whitice to bring Sarah Haywood, the internationally renowned British wedding designer to Qatar to conduct a special wedding clinic at The St. Regis,Doha. For 2013, Buthaina plans to bring the the iWED wedding journal project with a difference. Speaking about Haywood, Buthaina says bridging the gap between two cultures was her inspiration, “Of course she comes from a very different culture, but I want to merge her culture and mine! We have a few similar activities, but I want to present the Arabic and the Qatari culture to the world.”At the iWed, she and Haywood will host a special wedding clinic to address the concern of brides who attend the iWED 2012. The Qatari wedding is not just part of Buthaina’s heritage, but also their legacy. She emphasizes that modern Qatari weddings are very friendly and warm,

Her Highness Sheikha Moza bint Nasser is the first lady who was presented in the media. She broke the wall, the rules and we are all here now because of her. I’m not saying this because I’m a Qatari citizen! Everybody who lives in this country feels the difference as a result of her initiatives.

and not as formal as older times. Among the many celebrations included are the Henna party, engagement party and even bridal showers. A wedding tradition that she calls rather special is ‘Hadiyah’ which celebrates the move of the bride from her parent’s home to her new home. For Buthaina, her Wedding Journal project is a five-year plan that she has envisioned and is all about bringing the women in her community closer. “I want to develop the Qatari women, bring them and their products to the market. Because we are a small community we know each other, but we do not know

who is doing what. So via the Wedding Journal, we created a platform for them, to enhance their exposure to the community.” She celebrates womanhood as much she celebrates her life. Most recently she organized Qatar Telecom’s first International Women’s Day celebration on March 8th. All women received flowers and chocolate and a special quote, “We are cheered by he-roes, but now we need to be cheered by our she-roes.” Further celebrations entailed a stage where women from different departments were invited to share their experiences in corporates. “We[women] are different, we are special! We are behind each successful community. Believe me [as women]we can do anything if we do it in the right way and if we have the healthy environment, the right circumstances and are surrounded by positive people.” How She Does it? Buthaina’s Secret Buthaina has utmost belief in the power of positive thinking, something that gives her tremendous energy to achieve any goal, even before she sets out to execute it. She believes one’s destiny is written, but only when one gives it positive energy, can one realize their true potential. This entails having a clear vision of her next big project, a book that she plans to author under the title ‘How I Did It.’ But

ABODE

that’s not all: “We are thinking of making a perfume for the World Cup 2022, we are thinking of developing a special perfume, as a souvenir for the people who come in to attend it. This will remind them of the year 2022,” she enthuses excitedly. When asked to explain her success, Buthaina reasons that a successful leader needs a strong team, faith in teamwork and a smile. “I’m a very demanding woman, very action oriented, but my smile will not leave me. I always smile. I call my staff as my friends. I outline their roles and responsibilities and duration of the time.” Supporting Local Talent in Qatar In addition to supporting women at her workplace, Buthaina has a personal policy of supporting Qatari women entrepreneurs as well. As a woman who is a beloved part of the community, her sense of style is noticed and influences trends. She uses this attention to send out a strong message and says most of her abayas are made by local Qatari designers. She comments on how the abaya is an integral aspect of the Qatari woman’s life and therefore entails much thought. “I always tell younger women that they have to be careful in selecting abayas and the shaila according to the event, say for work, teatime, shopping, weddings and celebrations and so on.” While abayas for special occasions or casual purposes may feature extensive design and beadwork,

Buthaina states that at a workplace the abaya should be soft without too much design or embroidery, plain black design with a belt in it. “I’m sure most girls know it now, but some still use decorative work on their abaya for business and that’s what is killing me, believe me!” she says laughing. ‘Don’t Hide Behind the Walls’ Honesty, an innovative approach, learning from mistakes, thinking for oneself and the community form the foundations of her values. “Don’t work between walls, don’t hide your achievements or even your mistakes. And you should share your experience so that people can consider you as reference, because you are talking from real experience.”Buthaina’s inspiration comes from Qatar’s very own, Her Highness Sheikha Moza bint Nasser, whom she credits for her own success. “HH Sheikha Moza is the first lady who was presented in the media. She broke the wall, the rules and we are all here now because of her. I’m not saying this because I’m a Qatari citizen! Everybody who lives in this country feels the difference as a result of her (HH Sheikha Moza’s) initiatives.” Discounting gender bias, nationality, religion or even colour, Buthaina says that today’s woman can succeed in everything. and because she has had family support and she thinks that the world is pink. Well, I made it pink, if I didn’t make it pink, it will not be pink, she exclaims, emphasizing the ‘I’. And she’s not afraid of showing tough love. “We are in a different era now, and now you make the decision, (it is) you who makes yourself miserable. Some people like to suffer, like to cry. I tell them that I will buy them a box of tissues but that’s about it.” Even if you are successful professional yet denied a promotion, there would be reason and one needs to inspect their own self and work on their attitude, behaviour and of course be tough but smile at the same time! The Balancing Act The pressures of a busy corporate life may take a toll on family life, but here too, Buthaina refuses to compromise. In her eyes, he is the force who wants her to be a successful mother, a successful woman and a successful Qatari woman. To keep herself fit, she loves to practice yoga. “See the western people! Every weekend they are with their families enjoying themselves. I saw President Barack Obama and his wife and how he was taking care of his kids, attending their celebrations in schools, parents gathering, activities!” •

An inspiring business and social entrepreneur, Buthaina has made it her mission to dream big for her country, her women and herself. Her presence on the online media is proof!

Marching Ahead By Nitya Shukla Photography jessie palanca

The task of heading the first Embassy of Ecuador, not just in Qatar but also for the Middle East region (United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Syria, Lebanon and Jordan) comes with many responsibilities and expectations. However, His Excellency Ambassador of Ecuador to Qatar, Kabalan Abi Saab is excited about being here and more than ready for the challenge!

ABODE

I

f there is one motto HE Kabalan Abi Saab, lives by, it is to always look ahead and march forward. And he brings this solid principle in his latest mission, notwithstanding the fact that this is the first time he has been appointed to represent the Government of Ecuador as Head of a Diplomatic Mission and as an ambassador to any country. He will also serve as the non-Resident Ambassador to United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Syria, Lebanon and Jordan in the Middle East. Prior to this, he was a businessman who was involved in the public sector and was appointed Advisor for the Middle East and the Arab Countries by the President of the Republic of Ecuador (in 2010) and executed many official missions.

in Qatar. In these meetings, some issues were discussed as the possibility of consolidating and strengthening the relationship between the two countries on different levels: political, commercial, investment, cultural, touristic etc.

ABODE: Please tell us about your journey in Qatar and about your experience in Qatar.

KAS: Ecuador is aiming to build ties with Qatar. I would like to stress that the relationship between the Government of Qatar and the Government of the Republic of Ecuador will be tight, solid, and strong on all levels and in all fields. Additionally, serious efforts and work will be implemented to tighten this relationship and to open venues for investment with Qatar.

KAS: Despite the fact that my presence in Doha has not exceeded one month and a half yet, I can say that since my arrival, I have been welcomed and have received hospitality from the Qatari authorities. Here in Doha, I feel at home with my family and my people. There is no doubt that I am very happy with my stay and my appointment as a Resident Ambassador in the State of Qatar. ABODE: What are some activities that have been spearheaded to forge ties between Ecuador and Qatar? KAS: By the end of 2010, a delegation consisting of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Qatar visited Ecuador in order to identify the most important investment projects. Another Qatari delegation traveled to Ecuador to prepare for the visit of His Highness Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al-Thani, Emir of Government of Qatar, to Ecuador which was scheduled on February 2011. Unfortunately, this visit did not take place due to the events that occurred in the region. However, I think this visit will be re-scheduled on the second half of this year. On March2011, a delegation headed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ecuador, Mr. Ricardo Patino, visited Doha, and met His Highness Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al-Thani, Emir of Government of Qatar as well as other government authorities

Undoubtedly, the launch of the Embassy of the Republic of Ecuador in Doha as well as the Qatar government’s decision to open an embassy in Quito, the capital of Ecuador, will further strengthen the relationship between the two countries and will ensure the execution of the Agreements between Ecuador and Qatar. ABODE: How do you view the relationship between Ecuador and Qatar?

The most important thing is that there is determination from both authorities towards strengthening the relationship between our countries. I would like to emphasize that strengthening this relationship is going at the highest levels from both countries by His Highness Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al-Thani, Emir of Qatar and by the President of the Republic of Ecuador Economist Rafael Correa. Therefore, I can see that the outcome of this relationship will be prosperous, solid and beneficial for both countries. ABODE: What other initiatives are you planning to promote cultural exchange? KAS: The subject of cultural exchange is very important and has profound strategic dimensions for the development of relations in other fields. Currently, there are some negotiations going on between the two countries who are discussing the draft of some important agreements, which are still under study. On the other hand, and from our side, we will endeavour to promote the Ecuadorian’s

people

culture in the government of Qatar by participating in: Scholarships, cultural festivals, arts exhibitions, concerts, movies, touristic information, gastronomic festivals etc. At the end and as a result, we have to deepen our knowledge of each other, share our cultures, and get to know each other’s habits and traditions so that we can develop and strengthen our relations. ABODE: What are your interests? Once your work is over, how do you like to spend your time here? KAS: I try to take advantage of my free time to work on my reports and to analyze and inspect the work and projects that we have done and accomplished during the day. Additionally, I also prepare and work on the future projects that we need to accomplish. My hobbies are various: reading, playing tennis, watching football, Formula one, practicing different types of sports. My priority is my family as I like to spend my free time with my wife and my children. I also watch television and news in order to be aware of all of the political, economical, financial issues and events that occur all over the world. ABODE: Prior to being appointed as the Ambassador, how were you engaged in Ecuador? KAS: Before getting involved in the diplomatic world, I was a businessman managing my companies. In the past three years, I have been collaborating with the government of the Republic of Ecuador as Advisor for the Middle East and the Arab Countries. By the end of 2011, Ecuador decided to open an embassy in the Gulf Region and I was appointed as the Ambassador of the Republic of Ecuador to the State of Qatar and as Non-Resident Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Syria, Lebanon and Jordan. ABODE: What is the motto that you live by? KAS: First, life itself, since it's full of values. My family, my children are my greatest inspiration in the daily struggle. Also, the society, my country, in short, the common good are permanent sources that motivate and inspire a lot of strength in order to love life. •

Simplicity Is The Key By Nitya Shukla photography jessie Palanca

In his own words, he is a simple person who values honesty and people are the source of his motivation. That’s how Giorgio Lanfranchi, General Manager of The Millennium Hotel Doha, explains his life and success each day.

O

f the many laurels that have been the highlight of Giorgio Lanfranchi’s 30 year career, the one achievement that would stands out is being Knighted for social and economic commitment in the Tourism Industry by the Italian President Giorgio Napolitano in 2006. An achievement that undoubtedly speaks volumes and yet when we ask him what still keeps him motivated to be better, he says that people are the reason of everyone’s happiness and satisfaction. And that is his motivation. Here are excerpts from the interview.

ABODE: Tell us about your journey to the Millennium hotel? What about this hotel (and Qatar) drew you? GL: I have worked in Italy, Switzerland, United Kingdom, Oman, Philippines, India, Egypt and Eritrea until I finally arrived to Qatar and joined Millennium & Copthorne assuming the role of General Manager of Millennium Hotel Doha in December 2008. Since then, I have been enjoying my journey, with every new challenge that comes along. The country is witnessing a great flourishing era and am very excited to be in Doha during this phase as new

challenges are arising which adds flavor to the day to day operation. ABODE: You are already known to possess an extensive experience within the hospitality sector, so how The Millennium experience adds value? GL: Throughout my career in the hospitality industry, I have played many important roles in widely recognized international 5 star destination companies, and thus joining Millennium & Copthorne hotels which is doing extremely good in the region and expanding in MENA which adds value to

my experience especially the new core values of Millennium and Copthorne. ABODE: Why do you love what you do? More importantly what keeps you motivated? GL: A simple word “People” – is the reason of everyone’s happiness and satisfaction. Guests as well as staff members motivate me. As in such ever growing market, working in hospitality and exceeding guests expectations is very agreeable, as everyday is a new challenging day and that is what keeps someone motivated. ABODE: What makes Doha an interesting place for you to live and work in? Any anecdotes for our readers? GL: No one can but to admit that Doha despite its affluent business and growth is still a peaceful place to be, safe yet entertaining at the same time. However, when it comes to traffic and roundabout, I have to be honest, it’s a bit too much crowded and sometimes annoying. ABODE: In 2006, you were Knighted for your social and economic commitment in the Tourism Industry by the Italian President Giorgio Napolitano. Please tell us more about it.

and operating them full fledge while in parallel developing and leading people to properly work, prove high performances and take the hotel to another level of service was one my greatest rewards. Thus, the more I achieve the more I want more. At the end, I like to convey my passion to my managers, develop their know-how whilst as well care about my guests. ABODE: Has your Italian heritage played an important role in shaping you as a person and practices? GL: Absolutely, I am Italian native, who was raised in a family of great cooks; my late grandfather was a genuine Italian cook, while my mother had her own restaurant. My studies were pursued in Lake Come followed by hospitality management in Switzerland. And that, taught me to be better, welcome and serve people as well as take care after my guests and be polite. ABODE: What goes on in a normal day for you? We are told that you touch base with your departments on a regular basis that surely adds to a hectic schedule? GL: Basically, every department has its own scope of work and needs with

a head to lead. All requests and needs and operations are checked on daily and weekly basis in order to ensure smooth flow of work as well as achievements. ABODE: What have been some of the achievements of the hotel that you are really proud of? GL: Having loyal employees as well guests for the last 5 years since the hotel has opened its doors to welcome locals and travelers, being awarded for achieving the highest standards of food safety and quality management, the HACCP certificate from Codex Alimentarius, and scoring the highest GSM - Guest Survey Measurements –among Millennium & Copthorne group as well as the competition set, is rewarding, satisfying and as always a push to give even more. ABODE: We hear you will be participating in the upcoming Hotelier GM Debate in April 2012, what are your expectations. How do you intend to create the difference? GL: I am not going to create any difference, however, I will certainly share thoughts with the attendees and express my point of view based on what I was able to learn and experience while working in Doha. •

GL: Well, following the opening of a grand hotel in one of the 3rd world countries, with scarce resources yet with very high potential I was recognized by the Italian Government for the development that all those employees have gone through and the great results they have achieved, and therefore I was given a Cavaliare della republica for solidarity. ABODE: Having achieved something so huge that is such an amazing achievement, one might just tend to get lazy, and rest on the past laurels. But not you, why so? GL: Having worked in many destinations and operated hotels at early stages from preopening, recruiting to soft run

What Makes A

Marriage Work?

By Nitya Shukla photography Jessie palanca & Jorell Legaspi

Ajay and Chandini Bahri

ABODE spoke to two fabulous couples in Qatar, whose journey into marital bliss had very different beginnings, yet here they are, happy to have met each other anyway.

A

ccording to the definition on the website Wikipedia, “Marriage is a social union or legal contract between people that creates kinship. The definition of marriage varies according to different cultures, but is usually an institution in which interpersonal relationships are acknowledged. Such a union is often formalized via a wedding ceremony.” True, but how a marriage between two individuals takes place is also significant, as some cultures still follow the ancient practice of arranged marriages, whereas some find it easier to fall in love and then get married. Both structures exist and are accepted in today’s world, however at ABODE we sought the opinion from two different couples in Qatar, one who was “fixed up” by their parents, and a second who were brought together by friends and love. Here we take note of the best and worst that they have learned over the years from each other and about each other. Music, Lyrics and an Arranged Marriage Ajay and Chandini Bahri This couple married each other within fifteen days of having met for the first time on 15th December 1990! Now twenty two years later, it’s still a story they tell with much interest. “Ours was a very traditional arranged marriage set up. I went back on a holiday from Abu Dhabi. Our parents had arranged a meeting for us, we met, went out together for a few times and then we decided to get married soon after,” said Ajay, who is currently works as the Chief Financial Officer at Qatar Telecom.

32

The reason for a rushed affair was that Ajay was visiting from Abu Dhabi, where he was working at that time. He wouldn’t return for another six months and nobody wanted to wait. Of Indian origin, Ajay and Chandini then lived abroad before settling in Qatar ten years ago. The system of arranged marriage is a common practice in India, and Ajay and Chandini, who grew up in India accepted this easily enough. When asked how is it different from love marriage, Ajay said “In an arranged marriage, settling down and getting to know each other takes time and what does help is if you are together alone.” Chandini reiterated the same point, saying that their time away from India and family assisted the process. It didn’t faze her a bit that she only started to get to know her life partner after they got married. “When we were out of India we had the time to understand each other and over time, we got to know each other’s flaws and good points.” For Chandini, finding a good friend in your partner is

one of the keys to a great marriage. “I take Ajay more as a friend so that I can tell him everything, that way you can talk to each other more freely and I guess that’s what makes a relationship work.” And though they are of different temperaments, it ends up strengthening the bond. Ajay says, “We are different in terms of personalities but we complement each other. I’m not as sociable as her, she makes friends very easily. That’s something I appreciate and admire.” For Chandini, Ajay’s patience has caused her own personality change over time. “What I’ve learned from him is anger

management, because I was very short tempered and he has slowed me down, made me a better person.”There should be no place for ego in a marriage; that, for Ajay proved to be a very important factor. A common interest that brought them even closer is a mutual passion for music. Says Chandini, “I did my master’s degree in music, from India. I like to sing, while Ajay plays the piano so we work together as a team. We sit and practice.” Chandini hails from an eminent Hindu family in India that has been documented in books; however, maintaining a humble stance is important, a quality we don’t doubt that Ajay appreciates. The couple has two daughters aged 19 and 16 years of age. For them their world revolves around their two girls and then each other. In this respect the family enjoys spending time together. Reflecting on her own experience, Chandini says, “When you do face tough times, you must try and sort it out together rather than going around and asking people for advice because so many different people will give different advice, which doesn’t work.” And sometimes it even does you great to take a break! “It’s important to take breaks. You realize the value of the person,” said Chandini on a concluding note. The Love Marriage Allam and Hala al-asmar A mutual passion for health, fitness and nutrition was what brought Allam and Hala together. Says Allam when asked to reminisce about the first time he met his future wife, “We met at a wedding of a friend initially. And then we were introduced formally via the conventional way, that is, our friends.” Theirs was a marriage based on a mutual attraction that progressed over the course of time. As for Hala, she found him to be very responsible and mature. “What attracted me to him was the amount of respect with which he treated me, he is a real gentleman.” Adding further Allam says, “Another thing that attracted me, (when I met Hala) was that I was in a very healthy phase back then and she is a nutritionist and a dietician. That one also

got me more attracted. It helped us meet at a common level.” After getting engaged on August 24th 1998, the couple eventually married a year later on July 24th 1999. They now have a son who is studying in year 2 at school. In their case, it was the individuals who decided to be together based on the qualities that brought them together. When asked what keeps the magic going, Hala appreciated the fact that Allam finds the time to surprise her and celebrates all occasions with her in a different manner every year. She says, “He always surprises me and is always up for celebration and remembers all occasions...Birthday, celebrations. Even after all these years he comes up with different ways to celebrate things.” Currently Allam works as the marketing manager at Salam, one of Qatar’s premium brands when it comes to fashion and clothing, whereas Hala works as a lifestyle counselor and dietician with the Aspire Academy. As working professionals, finding time to balance hectic work lives with the challenges of raising a child and finding time for each other is something where they support each other continuously. The couple tries to spend time with each other and in their case, health being a common passion, both take the time to work out at the gym together. According to Allam, Hala is quite the perfectionist. “She is very precise. She is a type A

Allam and Hala Al-Asmar

personality and everything for her has to be a certain way, a certain time and a schedule,” he says, laughing.” Regarding advice from their experience, the couple places high importance on the importance of communication. They have been here in Qatar for the last nine years. Personality wise, not quite the opposite, they have many similar interests, though they confess to have different thought patterns. For them, compromise becomes an important tool for making a marriage work. Says Allam, “In my opinion, no relationship will work without compromise and in marriage or otherwise— you can’t be at loggerheads. Someone has to give in to make the compromise.” For them travel is a great way to get away from the stresses of modern life and they even advocate taking a break from one another from time to time. Every couple has differences and conflicts that need to be resolved from time to time – when asked how they deal with this, Hala replies, “What helps [is] we travel outside during summer time. Sometimes I take a break, to go away for a few days.” •

Creating Family Friendly Spaces by Jacqueline Bodnar

One thing we can all agree on is that providing for a child is expensive. The US Department of Agriculture reports that, on average, over $250,000 will be spent on raising a child. And there’s no doubt that a good portion of it’s going to be spent on their bedroom. Just think of all the different ways that room is changed, from birth on up to the teenage years. With a little planning and expert advice, you should be able to keep some of that money in your pocket, while providing a cool and functional atmosphere.

Finding Furniture “To add to the fun of decorating your child’s room, ask your daughter or son for their help and then listen carefully to their ideas,” explains Laurie NissenMiller, an interior designer and owner of The Interior Zone in Reno. “If you have to modify their ideas, explain why, and you will have a happy participant.” When it comes to the furniture and decorations, it’s a good idea to have your child choose the type of items they would like displayed. A good way to go about displaying items is to have a few shelves and cork tack strips for pinning up art or posters, or to paint one wall with magnetic or chalk paint that will create a large usable canvas. Nissen-Miller points out that another fun thing to add to the room is a big shaggy rug on the floor, which is a new fad to youngsters and adds a coziness that they will enjoy.

36

“When choosing bedding, think ahead and ask yourself if the style is mature enough to last for several years,” says Nissen-Miller. “And ask yourself if the furniture is durable and if your child can grow up with it. If you choose to purchase youth furniture, plan on purchasing new furniture when your child is a preteen; otherwise choose furniture that is full-size and durable.” Kathy Gordon, from Imagine That Furniture, located in Reno, suggests that bunk beds are great feature for kid’s

rooms, even if they have their own room. Not only can pieces like desks and book cases be added to maximize space, but they can be rearranged as the kids grow and their tastes change. “Bunk beds are great for sleepovers and kids really enjoy the adventure sleeping of a bunk,” says Gordon. “Solid wood furniture easily transitions into teenage and college years, it’s very easy to repaint and change decorative images as the child’s interest’s change.”

Uncluttered Closets When created with care, closets can be a great place to store things that would otherwise drape over furniture and clutter the floor. This is one area of the room that you don’t want to ignore; it’s loaded with potential. “Most kids won’t fold their clothing without a little coaxing,” shares Ronald Wilhite, Jr., owner of Closets by Design, located in Reno. “By making everything hang, you won’t have to fight as hard to get them to put their clothes away.” He suggests creating closets that incorporate as many hanging rods as possible. While many people are familiar with adding one extra rod for a double hang, the shortness of children’s clothing means that you can triple- or quadruplehang. Other organizers that can be used in the closet to help with storage include shoe racks, hampers, baskets, drawers and bins. “Our designers actually draw up the closet and label it, so that the children can look at the diagram and know where the items are supposed to go,” says Wilhite. “Get the children involved in the design and it will be easier to get them to use it correctly.”

“Research has shown that the correct use of colours in the home and workplace can greatly contribute to a successful, healthy and happy life.”

Calling all Colours One of the most cost-effective and dramatic ways you can change a child’s room over the years is to simply give it a new splash of colour. It’s easy and inexpensive to buy neutral-coloured furniture and change the look by painting the walls or adding coloured pillows and window coverings. “Colour influences us in many hidden ways,” says Zara Stender, interior designer and owner of Zara Designs, located in Reno. “Research has shown that the correct use of colours in the home and workplace can greatly contribute to a successful, healthy and happy life.” She suggests that babies prefer bright primary colours, but that by the age of six a child’s choices are influenced by emotional associations. By the time they are teens, it’s influenced by fashion. Colours that you may want to steer clear of include red and orange, which can stimulate hyperactivity, and yellow for a baby’s room, because it seems to make them cry more. Family Rooms The one other area of the home where children spend a lot of their time is the family room. To create a truly familyfriendly environment, it’s important to keep it comfortable. Stender suggests that

38

shades of orange in a family room are ideal because they have the psychological effect of making us feel more social. It’s important to keep the room childproof and friendly. Large ottomans work great as a safe and soft coffee table substitute. “Keep it simple and decorate with coasters on the end tables,” adds Nissen-Miller. “For adult décor, add art on the walls, as well as plants, photos and candles up high. Remember, children aren’t young for long, and the day will come when you can put fragile items out on your tables again.” •

In pursuit of excellence

Noor Al Kuwa ri

The driving force behind Kro-K and Bazaar

by SADHBH ROYCE

I had the pleasure of meeting with Noor Ajlan Al Kuwari, the charismatic owner of the successful interior design firm Kro-K and Bazaar, the Moroccan inspired home interiors store. The winner of Qatar Business Woman of the Year 2011, I asked Noor about her business, her style and influences, how she manages to juggle her busy life and what her plans are for the future. Tell me a little bit about where you are from and where you studied? I was born in Qatar. I began my studies in Dallas USA and completed my degree in Virginia Commonwealth University, Qatar. What or who influences and inspires your designs/style? I’m very much influenced by Arabic design. I like to create eclectic interiors using Arabic influences and combining them with classical French and more contemporary styles. I balance the different styles to create something beautiful and unique. In Qatar, I have great respect and admiration for Ibrahim Jaidah.

He has successfully used our local Qatari heritage and maintained the identity of our culture while at the same time embracing modernity and translating it into some of the notable contemporary buildings we have in Doha today, such as the Qatar Foundation headquarters.

love to start all over again from scratch and use an eclectic mix of Arabic and contemporary classic design.

How would you describe your own personal style?

Yes, Qatar has its own style. It has the most simple Arabic design style in the Gulf region. I believe this is due to its location by the sea, its history and the Qatari people themselves who are very calm and simple.

When I was younger and was still studying I was drawn to the modern and contemporary, but as my job led me to use Arabic influences, I began to fall in love with the style too. In particular. I really love Moroccan style. My own home is quite contemporary and I would

Does Qatar have its own individual design style and how does it differ from other Arabic countries in the region?

That are the current trends you are seeing in the world of interiors. Moroccan influence and style is on trend at the moment and I was the first to bring this style to Qatar. My first trip to Morocco was while I was designing my husband’s restaurant Tajine in Souq Waqif and I just

40

fell in love with the style. This is why I opened my store Bazaar in City Centre, I have a beautiful collection of prefabricated antiques, mirrors, tagines and plates that can be beautifully incorporated into any interior. What is your most memorable project to date? Tajine restaurant is definitely my most memorable project. I was much younger then and it was first public space to design and showcase my talents. My husband travelled with me on our buying trip to Morocco and I had his full trust in everything I hand-picked. I think he’s probably the best client I’ve ever had and it made it a really lovely experience! What projects of note are you currently working on? The majority of my interior design projects are private villas at the moment. I am also working on the refurbishment of the Iranian Restaurant in Souq Waqif and am creating a beautiful new café space outside. Don’t worry though the infamous entrance isn’t changing. Do you have any advice for women setting up their own business in Qatar?

I would say try to think outside the box and bring new ideas to the country. There are so many things that we still do not have in Qatar so there is lots of opportunity. I would also say it can be challenging as this is a country with a small population. Reputation here is everything. Word of mouth is the best publicity, so much so that advertising is almost unnecessary. You have to work hard to deliver a quality product or service and achieve a good reputation. Then the challenge then is to at least maintain that level. If you strive to improve from there, you have a good chance of success. As a successful business woman and a mother do you have any tips for achieving a successful work life balance? I grew up with two very successful parents, both of whom worked. They were my role models and set the standards for my perception of’ life’ and I would never lower those standards. I think the quality of the time you spend with your family is the key factor. Children do not just need to be clothed and fed they also need someone to look up to and nurture and

special feature

encourage them to succeed in life. I also believe that a healthy lifestyle is very important. Exercise should not be something you try to squeeze into your busy schedule but fail to. Exercise actually gives you more energy and in turn this energy generated will allow you to be even more productive. You were awarded Business Woman of the Year Qatar 2011 in December of last year, what has this meant for you? To be awarded with this honour means so much to me. I was really amazed and surprised that a committee of business specialists would recognise and honour my work. If anything it has made my life more challenging. Now I have to keep at this level at the very least and constantly strive to improve further and further. What are your future hopes and plans for Kro-K? I plan on concentrating on the retail aspect of my business and transform Bazaar into an international brand. I want to bring Arabic style to the rest of the world and show how it can be incorporated with any other style to create beautiful and inspiring interiors. •

Sarah Haywood Cal l in g! One of the world’s premium wedding planners and designers is heading to Qatar in April for a special Wedding Clinic in association with businesswoman and entrepreneur Buthaina Al Ansari, and hosted at The St. Regis Doha during the ongoing iWED exhibition 2012. ABODE talks to this fantastic planner in an exclusive chat.

S

arah Haywood is coming to Qatar! She is the fabulous fairy godmother every bride dreams of to help her with her wedding, because Sarah can make a fairy tale wedding come true. She is foremost recognized as a world class wedding planner and designer and highly sought after by celebrities, leading public figures and nobility. Her book the ‘Wedding Bible’ earned her the title of the UK’s top selling bridal author. At the wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton, Sarah’s credibility as an expert wedding planner was further enhanced when she was established as the ‘go-to’ international commentator ’ appearing on several networks throughout the world in the build-up to the wedding and as news

network CNN’s wedding expert on the day of the royal nuptials hosted by Piers Morgan. The print media already hailed her as a force to reckon with. TIME magazine has called her: “Britain’s most sought after wedding planner and an authority on multi-million dollar weddings.” And while big royal weddings are her expertise, Sarah has a solid ear to the ground on what brides want. Most recently she became the first wedding planner to invest in a mobile phone apps. Now, no matter what kind of wedding you want to organize for yourself, Sarah’s fabulous Ultimate Wedding App will be your aid in everything! Which is why, you can understand, the ABODE team was so excited to have the

opportunity to interview her. Here are the highlights from the conversation: ABODE: How did you end up being a wedding planner? SH: The first big budget party I ever planned was the 10th Anniversary of the TV program I worked on (I was formally a TV news anchor): that was over a decade ago. Friends then started asking me to organize their weddings and their parents employed me for big bash parties (I met my husband at one!). Then when I got married I went out to buy the definitive book on wedding planning, only to discover it didn't exist – that's when I got the idea to write the 'Wedding Bible'. During the three years it took to research, conduct the fifty plus

Sarah Haywood’s 10 Top Wedding Planning Tips MONEY MANAGEMENT Plan only for the type of wedding you can afford. Accept what you’ve got to spend and always shop with this in mind. Create your perfect wedding, not a celebrity footballer’s dream day. BE ORGANIZED It’s the key to successful and stress free wedding planning. PRIORITIZE Don’t waste time getting carried away with the detail of your day until you have put in place the key elements: where and when you’ll be married and how much you can afford to spend. PRESENT A UNITED FRONT Create your day together and present a united front to your families. Leave some room for family input – especially if they are contributing financially. RESPECT & COMPROMISE When drawing up your guest list, be sensitive to the desires and expectations of each other and your families. Respect the point of view of others and listen, even if you eventually reject their ideas. Be prepared to negotiate and compromise. DELEGATE Behind every blooming bride and gorgeous groom is a fabulous and efficient team, so delegate what you can to friends and family who have skills in areas you need help with. BRIDESMAIDS & BEST MAN Have a reliable best man and matron of honor. If your closest friends are not reliable and/ or competent, give them something else to do! HIRING & FIRING Do not hire anyone or anything until you have seen or sampled their wares. Get every detail in writing. Before signing a contract ask: “is this your best price?” KEEP COOL, CALM & COLLECTED especially with your nearest and dearest! Don’t alienate anyone you’ll need later on. WEDDING FREE ZONES Have wedding free zones in your home(s) and wedding free evenings with your intended. Then you’ll remember why you are doing this!

interviews contained within it and write it, I gained more hands-on experience planning weddings. ABODE: How did you end up on TV then as an expert commentator? SH: After the first celebrity wedding I did we had clients literally knocking at the door and I decided it was about time I stopped kidding myself that I am really a TV journalist! But extraordinarily that was when the broadcasters started asking me to regularly commentate on and about weddings—so now I have my dream job—organizing weddings and writing and broadcasting about them: the recent British Royal Wedding being the highlight, when I appeared as CNN’s bridal expert. ABODE: What sets apart Sarah Haywood Design? SH: Ours is a truly bespoke, impartial and international service and we assemble the right team for each client from scratch. We create a celebration with you and never try to ‘shoe-horn’ clients into an existing service or toward what we want for them. We state: “your dream is our dream” and that is true whether a client knows what that dream is, or whether we work together to find and create it. We offer our expertise and experience, but I try never to lose sight of the fact that a wedding should say something about a couple, who they are as individuals, their shared values and their sense of style. That requires a lot of work at the outset. My clients hire me because they like my signature look, which is sophisticated, stylish, glamorous and elegant. I have created some extravagant weddings and celebrations in terms of huge amounts being spent on gowns, flowers, gourmet food and fine wines, entertainers and musicians. But equally we have created some beautifully elegant celebrations on more modest budgets.

simple: plan only for the type of wedding you can afford. Weddings are about people, not about how much you spend on them. And how much money you spend celebrating your commitment to one another is not a measure of its strength. All you are doing when planning a wedding – large or small, big or limited budget – is creating a backdrop. When the day comes it will be people who bring the event to life and define its success. If it is day created to look at rather than to be enjoyed it will not be remembered for the reasons you want it to be. ABODE: What made you invest in the mobile apps? SH: I’m proud to be the UK’s top-selling bridal author and to be the first wedding planner globally to have invested in mobile apps: they were a natural extension to our portfolio. I appreciate that not everyone can access my service or even secure the services of a wedding planner – we are a luxury: but for a modest amount I’ve books to help and inspire, and for as little as the price of a cup of coffee you can download our Ultimate Wedding App (available for iPhone, BlackBerry and Android) and get the benefit of a decade’s experience and expertise. I get a kick out of knowing I’m playing a part – how ever tiny – in the planning of tens of thousands of weddings with people I have never even met. My next projects include new editions of my existing books for later this year and early next and a new book: ‘BritGlam Weddings' for 2013. •

A Nut Packed With Protein And Nutrients By gloria Duran - Renderos, bsc. mph, nutrition consultant

These small and unassuming nuts bring with them a host of health benefits, from heart prevention to diabetes control and have been vindicated to the status of a healthy food to eat every day. Almonds are not only rich in protein but also in nutrients such as monosaturated fats, calcium, potassium, iron, magnesium, manganese, zinc, vitamin E and vitamin B complex. All of these nutrients are needed to carry on important metabolic pathways in the production of energy and sustenance of the human body. It is important to mention that there is a difference between sweet almonds and bitter almonds. Sweet almonds are edible while bitter almonds are used mainly in the production of almond oil. They contain a toxic substance, and must be cleansed and cleared before oil extraction. Most people like roasted almonds; however, to get the most health benefits from almonds, they should be consumed raw and not roasted or flavoured.

Traditions

By gloria duran renderos, bsc. mph, nutrition consultant

Some wedding traditions are based on adaptations to the needs at the time, customary religious practices in ancient times, superstitions or existing etiquette at the time they were initially practiced. Whatever the reason for the traditions, weddings are always a wonderful time to experience a little of the past.

The Croquembouche: This cake is actually the first wedding cake officially made. The tradition originated in France and legend has it that a French pastry chef, visiting medieval England, witnessed the English tradition at the time of the bride and groom trying to kiss each other between a pile of sweet cakes without knocking them all down. The French pastry chef was fascinated with the idea and went back to France with the notion to improve it. He decided to create a dessert that resembled piled sweet rolls and assembled them into a tower. This is said to be the very first Croquembouche.

The Wedding Cake

Literally a wreath cake, this is a traditional Danish and Norwegian dessert, usually eaten on special occasions. The cake is made out of a series of rings of cake, layered on top of each other in order to form a steep-sloped cone shape. The cake is usually made with almonds, sugar, and egg whites and marzipan and is soft and chewy but sturdy enough to support its height. In modern Western culture, a wedding cake it is usually a large cake, multi-layered or tiered, and heavily decorated confection with icing.

Saving the top of the cake:

One of the oldest English and American traditions surrounding weddings; is the saving of the top tier of the cake. A traditional wedding cake is usually made of a sturdy pound cake or fruit cake and needs to have more than two to three layers. The cake is iced with either fondant or marzipan. The reason for such a solid cake in the first place was that the top tier was to be removed, wrapped and stored, and served at the christening of the first born or on the first anniversary of the newly married couple, whichever came first; and the second tier would be cut up and sent to distant relatives, while the remaining layers were served to the guests attending the wedding.

66

The Kransekake cake:

Cutting the Cake:

The custom for the bride and groom to jointly cut the cake was a custom that originated in Denmark as a means to ward off evil spirits. During the reception it was customary that a Danish couple hold the knife together and cut the first slice of their wedding cake. Since then, the tradition has been passed on from one generation to the next as a symbol of unity and love as the action of cutting the cake together is meant to symbolize their first joint task in married life.

Participating in a Zeffa: According to tradition, a Zeffa is an Egyptian wedding procession that originally brought the newly married couple and the wedding party from the bride’s parents home to the bride’s new home at the groom’s house. This moving of the bride occurred at night and was led by a dancer, musicians and singers. The couple’s friends and family would follow behind the wedding party as well.

When all the batter is fried, dip a few pieces at a time in sugar syrup. » Serve hot or cold.

The Khaliji dance

To celebrate the wedding, a special khaliji dance is performed by the young members of the family. The dance is special as khaliji dancing is unique for its slow, smooth, feminine moves. However, within the khaliji dancing, there are different styles depending on each song. For example the khammari is a very slow dance where women have to cover their faces while dancing; usually grandmothers like to dance this dance because it’s an old dance.

Bridal henna Bridal henna is one of the oldest and most widespread henna traditions. The custom originated in the eastern Mediterranean, and spread from there across many countries: from the west coast of Africa east to Malaysia and Fiji, from South Africa north to Armenia. Bridal henna is done in the same way by Muslims, Christians, Jews, Roma,Zoroastrians, Sikhs, and Hindus in the countries where henna is available enough to be a tradition. 67

European and North America Jumping the Broom: The custom of “Jumping the Broom” replicates a wedding ceremony in which the bride and groom signify marriage as they enter into a new life together. Although this practice is usually performed at the wedding ceremony; many, also, celebrate this ceremony: at the wedding reception, anniversary parties or the renewing of wedding vows. Customarily, the happy couple holds hands while standing in front of a bridal broom, decorated in ribbons and flowers, and “Leap” over the broom to signify their joint decision to enter in to new life together; symbolically “sweeping away” their former single lives, former problems and concerns. MARZIPAN COOKIES Ingredients: 1 cup butter, softened 1/2 cup of sugar 2 1/2 cup -all-purpose flour 1 tsp. almond extract Preparation: Cream butter and sugar together. Stir in flour and almond extract until mixture looks like cornmeal. Roll out and cut into different shapes (may be coloured if desired). Place on ungreased cookie sheets. Chill 1/2 hour. Bake at 300 degrees for 30 minutes until set, but not brown. (Recipe from www.cooks.com)

Pinning money on the Bride and Groom: The ritual of pinning money on the bride or money dance

is an event at many wedding receptions in various cultures. It is believed that this custom originated in Poland in the early 1900s. During a money dance, guests pay to dance briefly with the bride or groom and pin cash on the couple. It is usually thought that the money will be used by the newlyweds to get a start in life.

Throwing Rice, Birdseed and Confetti:

Rice was traditionally used to symbolize fertility and prosperity in ancient wedding ceremonies. When guests threw rice at the bride and groom at a wedding, they were symbolically wishing them a lifetime full of children and good fortune. Throwing rice remains a timeless tradition that many couples still enjoy around the world and especially in the USA. In France, people throw wheat, a symbol of bounty, after the ceremony. Italians toss candy and sugared nuts over couples, for sweetness in marriage. Everyone attending the wedding gets to participate in throwing rice or whatever is being used in lieu of rice, whether it’s birdseed, confetti, candy, wheat or even bubbles.

Saying it with Flowers

The Jaimala ceremony is an important tradition in a wedding in North India. Before the wedding ceremony commences, the bride and groom exchange beautiful floral garlands which represents their acceptance of each other as husband and wife. This is done in the presence of family and friends amidst much cheering. All Hindu wedding ceremonies in India follow this tradition and sometimes the groom’s brother may sprinkle flower petals over the couple to protect them from evil.

Almond Kulfi Almond Kulfi is a popular ice cream like dessert for summer weddings. Basics For The Newlyweds By gloria Duran - Renderos, bsc. mph, nutrition consultant

Going to the supermarket, preparing meals, eating and relaxing at home are very important activities to be started after the honeymoon. Newlywed couples must decide together, what will be the best kitchen and dining accessories, furnishings and meals to best suit their new lifestyle before they invest large amounts of money in equipping the kitchen and buying cooking accessories they will never use.

T

o make it easier for you to sort out the needs of your first kitchen and to buy the right kind of pots and pans recommended for health and longevity, ABODE put together a few ideas from Lakeland, our favourite store.

Basic Kitchen to Start: • A set of stainless Steel pots and pans. This is an essential set in any kitchen. The pots should have tight fitting lids, good welded heat resistant handles, be of a medium weight, easy to lift but steady. This is a good investment. • A set of Non Stick skillets. You should have an 8”, 10” and 12” in diameter. They are essential for light frying, sautéing, or preparing egg dishes, pancakes, or crepes. For these you will need a nice set of wooden spoons or plastic spatulas.

• A set of Kitchen knives. Medium weight stainless steel blades are the best, the set should include a Chef’s knife for paring and dicing, a long serrated knife, a carving knife, two paring knives, and a pair of good kitchen shears or scissors. • Four cutting boards. Small, medium and two large ones. The large ones should be one to cut meats and another to cut fruits and vegetables. This is essential hygienic practice to avoid contamination of fruits and vegetables that will be eaten raw, as for salads. • A three piece colander set. Small, medium and large.Should have strong handles and a range of fine to medium size mesh.

lidded saute pan 26 cm {QR 449}

• A tea kettle or electric water warmer. • A dish and cutlery drainer. I like best the stainless steel because it lasts longer and kitchen looks clean. But the most important thing to consider is its size. It must be large enough to hold safely, plates, cups and glasses. The best I have found has a deck for delicate ware, and two pouches to hold eating utensils. • A rotating Lazy Susan to hold spices or a nice spice rack. • A set of canisters to keep dry food handy and stored. The set should be well chosen because it will add decor to your kitchen counter.

The prettier it looks, the happier you will be to prepare the meals and share them with your loved ones.

Important questions to ask: 1. What foods do we like the most? The preparation of these foods will determine the cooking tools you need, and also the menu and the food shopping list.

2. What style of eating do we like? Formal, informal “on the go” “take a way”? This is also a very important decision. You can compromise on your differences, and learn from your mentors what lifestyle is best for your health. For example, studies have shown that sitting at the table to eat, sets a relaxing mood, family members interact more with each other and your stress level is decreased; while eating at a breakfast bar is not relaxing, you learn to eat standing up as if rushing out, communication is poor and increases the stress level. BUT, whatever decisions you take, sharing a home cooked meal is always a pleasure for everyone involved.

Karina &Pradeep

From india Mesmerizingly simple, that’s how our Indian bride Karina perhaps would describe her wedding day when she married Pradeep Roy. The couple chose to return to their town Kottayam in Kerala and have a traditional Christian wedding. To honor the occasion, the bride wore a beautiful sari (a traditional costume in India for women) which was made from finely woven silk and decorated by hand work from Benaras, a town known in India for their beautiful sari creations. To add a splash of colour, the bride’s necklace featured Ruby and uncut diamonds from Hyderbad. Not to be left behind Pradeep wore the traditional Kerala attire called the Mundu & Jubba (which was tailored in Doha).

Marlynne &Victor From Philippines Having met while they were working and living in Qatar, it was rather natural that this couple decided to organize their wedding here in a country they both have come to love. They married on February 24, 2012, in a low key yet elegant ceremony attended by family and close friends. Both are Philippine nationals and met through a common friend. They chose to organize the celebration at the Century Hotel, Corniche, Doha after a civil ceremony was held at the Embassy of Philippines. According to the bride, one of the best parts of the wedding was that each of her family member decided to do something special for the big day and their friends even put together a band for the occasion.

Tips To A Flawless Bridal Look by make up for ever

Every girl dreams of her wedding day and naturally wants to look beautiful for the occasion. When it comes to make up and looking great, one of the most important factors that every bride needs to bear in mind is to maintain her look throughout the day. As is usual, brides start getting ready early in the day which is why it imperative that make up lasts the entire day and night. The bride’s makeup is most noticed during the wedding, in the wedding photographs and videos, all of which will be looked at for many years to come so it is very important to choose the right textures and colours.

Preparing 1) Prime

Prepare the skin using the HD Elixir, which is an instant radiance and hydration serum that gives the skin an immediate glow and freshness. Apply HD Elixir on parts of the face that are more lined or dehydrated such as around the eyes to correct fine lines and puffiness or over the entire face to reduce signs of fatigue and dehydration caused from all the wedding preparations. After applying the HD Elixir, apply the HD Primer which is a microperfecting base that softens and moisturizes the skin, making it smoother and perfectly prepared for the application of makeup.

2)Cover

Apply the HD foundation all over the face including on top of the eyelids. The HD foundation is an invisible cover foundation

108

The best way to get a flawless look that will last (throughout the entire day and night) is to follow these steps from MAKE UP FOR EVER. It is recommended to use the Aqua range and the High Definition range for your complexion as it is the new generation of makeup that perfects skin for extreme close ups on camera. Just follow these simple steps below and look your best in your wedding albums!

which hides imperfections and perfectly corrects complexion. It leaves skin closeups perfect, yet so natural. Make sure to apply a small amount of the HD foundation using the brushes specially designed for the HD Line such as the HD sponge or the special HD nylon brushes. After the foundation, apply the HD concealer around the eyes to correct imperfections and cover dark circles around the eyes. Choose one or two shades lighter than the foundation.

3) Finish

The final step is to emphasize the make-up and minimise the shine on the complexion. Apply the HD Blush to give a healthy glow to your face.

For a fashion effect, apply HD blush in a circular movement using HD brush. To emphasize the Natural shape of the cheek, apply HD Blush as a comma using the HD brush. For a more intense effect, apply HD blush using the HD sponge. The final step for the complexion is to fix the foundation and blush. Apply the HD powder on the face with a puff or brush. Invisible upon application, HD Powder minimizes shine and lights up the complexion. It gives the skin velvety finish with no visible buildup.

Contouring There are many different face shapes. Before starting with contouring, it is important you identify the shape of your face. If you need help, you can always visit the experts at MAKE UP FOR EVER. The ideal face shape is oval and you can get that ideal shape with the Sculpting Kit, which is a set of two compact powders composed of a light shade and a darker one. These two magic shades are designed to reshape the face using the light and shadow contrast. Using the dark shade in hollow areas reduces the size of the face, while the light shade can be applied to emphasize and highlight prominent features.

Eyes It is very important to use

long-lasting makeup on your wedding day. It is recommended to use the Aqua range as it is a full range of waterproof and long-lasting makeup. Make sure to decide on the colour palette and the theme before starting with your eye makeup. First, blend Aqua Eyes, waterproof eye pencil, on the eyelid, on the corner of the eyes or under the eyebrow, depending on the effect you want. The Aqua eyes can also be used as an eyeliner. If you would like to add false lashes to add volume to your lashes, apply one layer of

mascara as a base to curl your own natural lashes and aid the application of the false lashes. Apply the glue to the False lashes. Let the glue dry for a few seconds. Then adjust and set the False Lashes where your natural lashes on the top or bottom are the less thick. You can use tweezers to make it easier. Draw a fine line with the Aqua Eyes eyeliner on the bottom of the lashes to give volume and more intensity to the lashes. Second, blend the same colour of the eye shadow as the Aqua Eyes Pencil used to intensify the effect and to ensure more the stability Third, apply the Aqua Smoky Lash mascara which will allow you to have intensely curled, long and volumized lashes all day long. Fourth, colour your eyebrow with the Waterproof Eyebrow Kit to correct your eyebrow shape with intense and long lasting effect.

Lips When drawing your lips with

a lip liner, always start from the middle part of the upper lip (heart shape part) and then draw the middle part of the lower lip followed but joining the lines. It is recommended to use the waterproof Aqua Lip Pencil for a long-lasting effect. After contouring the lips, blend Aqua Lip all over the lips to unite the colour and to make your lipstick last longer. For a full coverage, use a highly pigmented lipstick such as the Rouge Artist Intense. Available in 50 dazzling and intense shades in 3 finishes (Matte, Satiny, Pearly), Rouge Artist Intense will offer you a supremely glamorous smile for that wow effect. If you are looking for a moisturising lipstick in natural shades, then Rouge Artist Natural is perfect for you as it is a hydrating lipstick that colours the lips naturally while enhancing its radiance. Marrying Prince Charming &

Planning A Wedding On A Budget By Marlynne Mallari – dela Peña Photography Jessie Palanca

Every girl reads the following words growing up; ‘Once upon a time in a faraway land there lived a beautiful princess waiting for her prince…’, and through these words begins to dream of how her own romantic fairytale will unfold, how she will meet the man of her dreams and what her wedding day will be like. For me, the fairytale wedding and finding my Price Charming all came true and while my Prince Charming, while charming, he had yet to claim his castle, we were able to have a wonderful wedding on a budget in Doha. This is our story. 114

~ How I met my Prince Charming

When I first met my husband Victor it was not love at first sight… instead our relationship began as a friendship that flourished and coupled with mutual admiration grew into love. As time passed we decided to get married!

~ The Plan:

As soon as we had set the date for our wedding, we realized we had only one and half months to prepare. Initially, we were clueless about where to start and time was running out! We enlisted our closest friends and families to help us plan for this special day. Each one contributed with ideas and suggestions.

~ The Venue:

Every wedding needs to have a place to celebrate. We planned for a very intimate affair as we wished to celebrate it with our families, close friends and colleagues. It was important that as we searched for that perfect castle we kept tabs on our funds. At the heart of Corniche stood this newly built hotel named Century Hotel. It was perfect, could cater to our expected guests list and was within our budget!

~ The Gown & Suit:

This was a dream come true to me, for at last, I would be wearing this beautiful white dress! To start, I searched on the internet for gown designs and I found this website where you can purchase and custom make your dress without breaking the bank balance. (www.tidebuy.com) but since I did not have much time, I chose a design and had it made here in Doha. Tailor, tailor, and tailor! I needed a really experienced one. I was lucky to mention my predicament to one of my colleagues and she introduced me to Juli, a tailor of high regard. I checked his designs and work, spoke with him about price, we shook hands and off he went. He scheduled a series of fittings just to make sure my dress would fit perfectly. If you are

planning to have it made in Doha you can visit Juli’s shop at Al Arjawan at Souq or email him at ashia_delarosa@yahoo.com, depending on the design dress priced from 800 – 3500 QR. As for my groom, I ushered him to a lovely Italian boutique (Pierre Cardin) at City Centre to get his suit. He liked several styles but ultimately decided on a beautiful dark brown suit.

~ The Ring:

One of the essential things of any marriage is the wedding bands which represent eternity and symbolize endless love and eternal devotion. Most experts state a ring should cost a buyer approximately two-month’s salary. Depending on your preference, you and your future husband should allot two weeks for your rings to be properly sized and customized. You can check the gold souq as they have variety of choices.

As we discovered, Opera doesn’t just deliver mouth watering cakes but they can also customize your dream cake according to your taste and likes. They had a wide variety of flavours to choose from. Who doesn’t go gaga for wedding design? We did! Fortunately, there are a lot of resources on the internet and lots of photos. To get a visual feel of what your wedding will look like on the actual day, prepare an electronic scrapbook of the styles you want —you can start with your make-up, bridesmaid make-up, their dresses, the bouquets, the hairdo’s, your groom’s style, the corsage, shoes, hairpiece, etc.

It’s best to have a trial make up from your favourite salon or try several make-up artists to get the look for a ‘picture perfect bride.’ I recommend you try Spa Chakra, MAC Makeup, Marie Claire, Make Up For Ever and Glow Salon.

~ Entertainment/ Visuals/ Photography:

I was lucky that my sister, Grace, had already arranged for the MC (i.e. herself), singers (our friends) and musicians! As for the video presentation during the reception, my brother in law, Jorge, did all the hard work. For photography, I requested my colleague, Jessie, to do the impossible task of making everybody looking simply amazing!

I know this is tedious to do but it is still best to write down all the people whom you wish to join you on your special day. This is one of the first tasks that you must do.

~ The Invitat ion Cards:

Classic wedding invitations are delightful, but for our wedding we wanted it to be contemporary. We had a pre-nuptial photo shoot with my colleague, Jessie and our stylist Jenny, and then we chose the best photo to go into the invitation. We designed it ourselves, decided on a font and had it printed at www.digital.com.qa . Voilà, our personalized wedding invitation!

~ Wedding Favours

Your give-away gift for your guests is a way of thanking them for sharing your special day. It need not be expensive or massive. Ours was a simple small bottle, filled with confetti and ribbons and our photo marked with the wedding date. You can buy in bulk from Al Shaheen or Al Rawnaq or if you have time you can bring something from your own country. (Give away gifts priced from 3.50-12.50 QR)

~ Extra Somet hing:

Who doesn’t want a picture of themselves? We wanted this special day to be memorable for our guests too, so we went

the extra mile and arranged for a photo booth, where they could have their photos taken and printed at the same time. An extra photo goes a long way! (For Photo booth you can contact 2Ms Event Organizers at 2mseventmanagement@gmail.com) As a result of these efforts, our wedding proved to be memorable affair without any delays or hiccups. Having braved the wedding nerves myself, here is a piece of advice for the bride to be. Enjoy your wedding, your walk, the music, the emotion it entails, the people and especially the person you’ll be spending the rest of your life with. It might not go perfectly as you planned but at the end of the day you won’t be thinking about what went wrong , but how you will make the other part of you happy – your husband. And as the fairytale concludes, I can say now, “and they lived happily ever after!” •

Waking Up

Light And Slim! By Nitya Shukla photography Jessie Palanca

The Slim’n Lite program offers healthy, freshly cooked meals created with the aid of nutritionists and dieticians, delivered to your doorstep. When combined with exercise, this program is a great way to achieve weight loss and adapt a healthier lifestyle because it teaches you how to eat by making you do what they do best: eat to your heart’s content! Who am I? A thirty-year old media professional who believes that her body (and mind) are still in the energetic teenage phase, you can expect to find me (at most times) with chocolate, Cheetos packets and caffeineladen cups at my work desk. The nearby fast food shop offered attractive solutions when it was time to stuff the panic with episodes of binge eating. Sure, my home fridge has loads of greens to ease the conscience, but they never really found a place (or a plate) at the dinner table. As for the exercise, I have a simple tactic: I take rain checks from my jogging shoes. Never known to wake up on time, I have even trained my body to abhor the idea of breakfast and would usually suffice with a warm cup of tea and perhaps toast grabbed in a hurry. Which is why, after four years of a constantly living a sedentary, indulgent lifestyle, I found myself in the size 12 sections. I remember panicking because the last time I had checked, I was a size 8! When I was found complaining at my workplace about being overweight, but having no intention of actually doing anything about it, a colleague decided to intervene and convinced me to try Slim’n Lite diet. What Is Slim’n Lite? Located in Al Sadd, the Slim’n Lite Diet

118

Centre offers to design, cook and provide a diet that is tailor-made to suit one’s individual nutrition needs. What’s more they will deliver everything -- breakfast, lunch, dinner and a snack in a neat box everyday to your doorstep. Prior to beginning the course I was offered a nutrition assessment and a body fat analysis. Here I was shocked to know that my body was 47 per cent dehydrated! I was advised to start drinking water. Following this quick analysis, I was offered a comprehensive menu to choose what I would to eat. I found this to be a great interactive tool where I was involved as the decision maker on my diet schedule. The diet was also tailored to suit my peculiar food needs since I’m allergic to egg and avoid meat-based products. Besides ensuring that my nutritional needs were met, I was advised to follow up with the nutritionist at the end of first two weeks to discuss my progress with the meal plans. Getting on with the Program The full-time regime from Slim’n Lite offers a balanced diet and incorporates a variety of calorie controlled foods and salads to meet the body’s needs. Care

is taken to pack each meal in separate boxes, which taught me a great lesson in portion control. The breakfast options ranged from pancakes or cornflakes to Arabic style platters incorporating fresh cucumbers and an occasional slice of bread. My lunch and dinners were accompanied with a creative salad or a soup which assisted in ‘feeling full’ after each meal. I was extremely impressed with the creative salads that consisted of fresh and crunchy ingredients, and that each dinner was accompanied with a special sweet treat, which has always been my weakness. I was informed that the meals were similar to home cooked meals, yet they are lower in fat, more varied in nutrient content. What’s more the meals had pasta, potatoes, pancakes, lasagne, and chocolate croissants!

The Uphill Battle In the initial phase I faced a bit of difficulty having to shift from my regular food, which consisted of a lot of white breads and carbs to being satisfied with what was a huge salad and a tiny lunch (compared to what I was able to eat). I am used to the Indian cuisine and eat a lot of pulses and vegetables cooked in oil and wheat based bread. My big meal each day was at dinner time and lunch was usually sandwiches happily dripping with cheese. I was not happy about feeling constantly hungry all the time, since I was trained to eat always to my heart’s content. During my assessment and introduction to the program I was advised to stay away from fried and oily foods (and yet I did end up cheating) and work on an exercise program that included at least 30 minutes of any activity daily.

Reaching the Summit After struggling and almost quitting in the first week itself, I was surprised when at some point I suddenly started understanding the point of the diet. Thanks to their creative salads, which contained combinations of lettuce, rocket, cheese, walnuts, red peppers and the like, accompanied by a small serving of dressing, I was able to start realizing the difference. I was surprised to notice that I was waking up more energetic and that hungry feeling was fading away. I realized that by having meals that are pre-planned and available, I was free from the task of having to prepare healthy food by myself. (I was never a great cook anyway.)

Learning the Discipline This was the eye opening week for me. I was finally able to understand, appreciate and practice portion control. From being frustrated about feeling hungry I was now happy that these meals were actually exactly what my body needed. I felt lighter and stronger and was starting to fit in clothes that I had given up on. This encouraged me to be more diligent in following the plan.

What I Learned As is well known, the battle against weight loss is a constant struggle for most of us and we could all do with a healthy, wholesome and creative ally like Slim’n Lite. This program can be tailored to your needs, whether you want it full-time, or just lunches. My change hasn’t been dramatic but I have now learned to stay focused on it and continue until I get to my desired size 8! •

THE Slim’n Lite Program: A Nutritionist’s Overview By Gloria Duran - Renderos, BSc, MPH Nutrition

Slim’n Lite is a nutrition program in Qatar that offers package meals for clients who want to lose weight and are having a hard time doing so. The meals are delivered to the client every day, with the intention to offer taste and variety as well as a tailor-made menu which will assist in weight loss. The packaged meals are very attractive and contain foods for three meals and three snacks. The prospective client, before subscribing to the program, is evaluated by a nutrition counsellor; however, the menus may not always adjust to the particular needs of the client, especially in regards to food intolerances such as Celiac Disease or gluten sensitivity. Overview of the program This program is an excellent tool to teach serving sizes and portion control, which is one of the toughest behaviours to relearn when one is to manage weight. To re-learn this behavior I recommend that people who take the program stay on it for at least three months and not miss the appointments with the nutritionist. To succeed in this program you need to be very motivated as well as disciplined in their eating behaviour and meal schedules. You must also enjoy the foods selected and be willing to receive and practice the tips given during expert appointments. If you have disorganized work and meal schedules or don’t like the food, you won’t reach the desired end results and end up feeling more frustrated than you were at the beginning. Suggestions to the Program Having followed the program progress with the client, in this case ABODE’s Nitya Shukla, here are a few suggestions which may improve the program’s efficiency. 1. Follow-up control may be done on a weekly basis. 2. Menus should be flexible to incorporate for some food intolerances and sensitivities like gluten sensitivity. 3. The program could include an activity monitor. Clients must understand the equilibrium between the calories eaten and calories burned during the time of their day to day activity. Weight management programs are a popular subject. Being overweight is not just an isolated issue; it is in fact, almost a global pandemic. The problem is that it is not just about foods, it is about habits, culture, and re-learning how to eat. All of this entails a massive change in lifestyle if one is to attain – and sustain – a healthy weight and live a better quality of life.

Balance And Health By Lauren Penny

There is nothing like a big event such as a wedding or an engagement to motivate us women to get fit and healthy. We want to look our best – it’s only natural! Here I explore healthy tips to maintain your balance and health prior to your big day.

W

e spend months and months, even years to plan the big day, from the dress, to the wedding reception, number of guests to the colours of the napkins. You strive to be fit, healthy and balanced; however one day you awaken and it all seems too much, you have missed important and cherished time with your partner, feel stressed out with a cluttered mind and it seems like all you do is eat, sleep and talk wedding. Everything is wedding, wedding, wedding and your special day is beginning to feel like a burden! Let’s look at methods to avoid reaching this point; here are seven healthy tips to maintain your balance and health prior to your big day!

Review your circle of life:

Identify the important categories to you in the lead up months to your wedding, such as Wedding Preparations, Health and Fitness, Career, Relationship with Partner, Relationship with Family and Friends, Me Time etc. By establishing the foundation with categories, you can start to create and sustain your balance during this intense and exciting time of your life.

Define your goals:

Establish and set your goals under each of these categories, such as Me Time – what does that mean to you? It could be as simple as a massage every fortnight or an hour in the garden with the plants on the weekend or movie night. For Health and Fitness, you may be looking to drop a few kilograms or tone your muscles. Set these goals with the end in mind – the target.

Schedule:

Now that you have set your goals, it’s time to break these down into actions. Breaking these down into small and achievable actions will enable you to achieve your overall goal. If your goal is to achieve weight loss and tone muscles in three months, you will need to schedule the time of day, activity and frequency per week, such as spinning class on Monday at 6.15 pm or circuit training on Wednesday at 6 am. Schedule each action daily. Treat all your actions as appointments, even your Me Time! Schedule it, so you will not miss these pre-set important elements in your life to sustain your health and balance.

»You can write to Lauren with questions regarding corporate living. Questions will be selected for the next publication with your permission. Please email: lauren@artofabundantliving.com

Get support:

It can be tough to stay strong and accountable to your goals if you don’t have someone else cheering you on. Identify someone who you trust and will support you to achieve your monthly goals. By sharing your goals, you connect yourself and ability to achieve them. Your support network is to encourage you to continue, if you miss a session or find yourself off track, they can assist you to regain your control and focus.

Multi-task:

We are women! We are the experts at this. Your pre-wedding arrangements are no different. Merge your important elements into one, such as relationship with friends and wedding plans – visit wedding venues with a friend and enjoy a relaxing coffee to catch up. Brainstorm wedding plans together with a brisk walk with a friend or husband to be. You will be amazed how many multi-task actions you can create!

Success Tip of Month

Keep an emergency snack on hand:

Stash healthy foods in your car, purse, and desk drawer to help satisfy your cravings and prevent you from choosing unhealthy foods not in line with your health plan. This is a good idea when you’re hungry at work and the vending machine is too appealing or when you’re out all day and the glow of fast foods signs is beckoning you. Stash healthy packets of nuts, dates, dried fruits with you at all time. •

Create a vision board of your wedding, what you will look like, feel like and be motivated by it. These images, words, quotes are to inspire and allow you to visualize your special day. Look at it often. Use it to give you positive images that will help you to overcome your day cravings to take a bite or hit snooze instead of hitting the gym. You are in control of your life and the choices you make – make those decisions in line with your vision board.

Out

Her Time is Running By Nitya Shukla photography jessie palanca

Time is not a luxury for the social change that Saudi Arabian lens-based artist Manal al Dowayan envisions.

I

t is said that a picture speaks a thousand words and elicits (from the viewer) an emotional response that could trigger a path towards change. For Manal, this comes through working tirelessly to ensure that her lens captures and presents the unified, empowered voice of women in Saudi Arabia, a country that faces gender issues and has only recently begun to recognise the importance of women’s rights. In her first solo exhibition at Katara Art Centre (Qatar), she has chosen to exhibit images from her past and present collections including the latest called My Name, along with I Am; Landscapes of the Mind; And We Had No Shared Dream... each of which echoes with the spirit of women from her country. As an artist from Saudi Arabia, she understands and accepts the many issues of her country. The identity of women, their rights, gender-specific issues and the relationship between a city and its inhabitants has shaped some of these works. Her efforts seem to be a brutally honest version of her reality without resorting to the clichéd rhetoric about the unfairness of it all. It relies instead on finding their identity in what these women do every day. She doesn’t want them to be perceived as mere ‘floating ghosts’ or remain lost or be perceived any weaker. She doesn’t like comments that have the word ‘beautiful’. “If a viewer comes across and says beautiful work, I am very disappointed. If it’s an emotional response like sadness, I like it! Because once a person lives through an emotional experience, that’s when you know that

124

like time “is Ianfeelissue for

me, like I don’t have time and things are not changing fast enough.

Manal Al Dowayan something has impacted them. I like hearing ‘this depressed me’... that gets me excited. Beautiful is not satisfactory for me.” The exhibit spans her career as an artist and that the identity of self emerges to be one of the themes. Her imagery is as hard-hitting as the words she uses to title them. There is an image which looks like a group of eyes staring at a car meter. Manal points it out to be ‘very pop arty’ then says “The eyes open (and closed) was an expression that in our society we close our eyes to a lot of subjects and pretend that it’s not happening... it’s very hard to self critique and pretend that everything is ok. Like in Saudi Arabia, women don’t drive, and they say it’s ok, we don’t need to drive. The car meter, is because as I am growing older, I feel like time is an issue for me, like I don’t have time and things are not changing fast enough. (Ordinarily) the car meter runs if you put money and you get time, but here in Arabic it says that the time is running out (like mine).” Her first collection was inspired from a speech delivered by King Abdullah

Al Saud in 2005, where he said that “women and men will make this country [Saudi Arabia].” While this caused much excitement, it also prompted a dialogue in the country that interested Manal, as to what jobs would ‘suit’ their nature. “So I looked around and found women who were in award-winning-work careers. These women were invited to pose in my photographs.” Thus came a series that depicted Saudi women in a variety of careers and included pieces like I Am a TV Producer and I Am a UN Officer. “I also had I Am A Mother to highlight importance of raising the next generation,” she says. Manal’s work is strong on the collaborative aspect. She says “I look back into my career and I realise that my work has mostly been collaboratory work with these Saudi women. And just by them participating in my work shows how they are involved in being part of my work. Women want to participate and you can see it, we have writers, poets and artists but the majority of women come out of their day to their life gives echo to their voice.”

Lifestyle

“And just a photograph from a newspaper becomes something different on the canvas!” she says still in awe. The prevalence of these gender issues in media, rather than their absence, also became a topic she explored when she experimented with pop art. A particular image in her collection is of abaya-clad women superimposed along a fenced road. Explaining this, Manal says “When they (newspapers in Saudi) write an article about a woman, they would pull out the image of an abaya-clad woman from the archive, and use it over and over. My mother and I collected these images for over a year. Now this prompted the question, ‘are we that unimportant that you just pull out the same image?’ I call these the black ghosts who are just floating.”

One of the biggest evidences of this is the artwork installation entitled My Name, which explores the notion that saying a woman’s name out loud is perceived as an offence in Saudi Arabian culture. To create this piece, she enlisted the help of 300 Saudi women from Khobar, Riyadh, and Jeddah who attended workshops and wrote their names on large beads, after which they positioned them together to form one communal piece. When asked to explain why these women came forward in such numbers despite the constraints they might face, she says, “You will be surprised how many women in Saudi came forward to take part and [are] supporting me as an artist. It’s only because I am blessed to have a platform that allows me to voice my opinion through my art. A lot of women don’t have this. So for them this was a space for them to say they believe in my art too.” Her art has a purpose. To be the catalyst of a major social change, that women in Saudi are not lost behind the veil that forms a larger part of their identity. “I think it (art) is a platform that speaks in a very subtle tone and is not direct. So if you are not ready for my conversation, you will absorb it as your own thought process (immediately), but the next time you come in you can absorb it at a higher level but it is not in your face.” While her first collection I Am was largely studio based, in the second she pushed for the technique. “I started working with layers and you will see that now that my artwork has evolved, it’s not just layers and this is part of my thought process and personality coming through. So I started to do screen prints.”

art

Her imagery strikes a strange balance between an outraged rebellion and an elegant argument. She cites one of her influences to be pop artists from London who changed newspaper articles into artistic expression, while she was doing her residency program at the Delphina foundation in Dubai.

Moving away from her work to the actual career of being a full time artist with exhibits all around the year, she says that she feels blessed and that art is time consuming. “The statements/ titles take me time. I read a lot about people who wrote about the philosophy of the landscapes and think about the questions about my world. Do I belong to it or does it belong to me. And also about the spaces, do I belong to the space that is Saudi, but where I am treated as a secondary citizen, so I belong or am I being pushed out. Do I fight for my space or do I let it go, because it is a battle when you think about it.” •

Bridal Fitness Getting Ready For Your Wedding Day By Allan Lloyd Martinez R.N.

A

woman’s wedding day is one of the most special days of her life. She’ll meet almost all her relatives, friends and future in-laws. She needs to be beautiful, fabulous and fit looking on and off the camera. What we need to focus on are the parts of the body that the wedding gown will accentuate most: shoulders, arms and tummy.

The time frame to notice a difference in your body will depend on your dedication to this workout, we recommend you follow a 5 day workout for approximately 2 months before the big day. You will shed fat and and tone the muscle in no time if you are consistent and dedicated in your workouts and watch what you eat. The kind of workout that I highly recommend is the circuit and compound type of workout. In this way, we are engaging more muscle groups at one time. Do dynamic stretching before warming up and do static stretching after workout. For warming up use the treadmill, Rotex/ Elliptical, bike or simply jog in place for 5-10 minutes. Your rest intervals should be 20-30 seconds only. After doing one exercise, proceed to the next exercise. Get a weight that allows you to do 15-20 repetitions.

Bringing out the bridal Glow Remember that 30% of your fat loss will be coming from your workout and 70% will be coming from your diet. So it is essential to be wise in our food intake. As the saying goes, “you are what you eat”. So here are the simple diet tips to bring out the bridal glow in you. • Eat 4-5 small meals per day • Avoid eating foods high in saturated fats such as animal fats

These are the foods that are low in calories but high in nutritional value like phytochemicals, vitamins and minerals. They are also rich in fiber, helping you stay fuller for a longer period of time.

naturally beautiful. The Foot Care Centre’s provide several of foot care services including the classic pedicure and pedicure Spa.

man walks hundreds of thousands of kilometers during his lifetime which makes about two million steps taken every year. Little do we realise that our feet are the most used part of our body and not let us feel like an effort!

Did you know that the human foot is a very complicated organ consisting of a multitude of bones, joints, muscles and tendons. That’s why this strenuous “machinery” deserves our special attention and care. Morover, the human foot contains a “map” that reflects the human body. Which is why, if maintained and taken good care of, the feet will ensure that the body doesn't suffer from diseases and disorders. Foot massage and exfoliation are not just a measure of luxury, but a good way to ensure care for our feet and an essential factor for our body’s well-being. One would think that this is warning enough, but most of the time, we end up treating our feet unfairly. A busy lifestyle, everyday rush, incorrect posture at work, lack of sports and finally, uncomfortable shoes cause many problems. In fact about 80 percent of adults suffer from variety of foot problems which is especially aggravated during summer times. So how do you ensure happy healthy feet? The best way is to have well-groomed and healthy feet with regular visits to foot care centers, where chiropodist or podiatrist take professional care of feet and advise proper foot care at home.

130

Classic pedicure The pedicure is designed to rejuvenate overwhelmed feet by cuticle grooming, callus softening and a gentle massage. A nail conditioner is applied to finish off this treatment.

Pedicure spa Pedicure Spa is a relaxing and soothing treatment: a combination of massage and foot bath. Typical of the treatment is enhanced care including foot immersing, exfoliation removes calluses and thickened skin, deep moisturizing and soothing massage. The treatment renews and regenerates the skin, improves blood circulation, refreshes, moisturizes and brings a sense of relief. Pedicure Spa provides lasting smooth and soft feet for a long time.

Professional feet treatment The Foot Care Centre specializes in the health and well-being of your feet. Professional Pedicure is taking care of your feet by removing dead skin cells, corns, calluses, cracked heels and verrucas. It is not your regular buff and polish pedicure, but rather a healthcare treatment that leaves your feet looking

It is, therefore, vital that we take good care of our feet, beyond simply making them look pretty. You can book an appointment at one of their three centers in Doha (City Centre, The Centre or Lulu Gharafa) and get the spring back into your step.

Scholl’s Deo-Activ Fresh Foot Spray is designed to become an integral part of

Dehydrated foot skin During the summer season we experience hot, humid and air-conditioned environments. These different conditions can disturb the delicate moisture balance on our feet and lead to dehydrated and rough feeling skin. The daily use of Scholl’s Foot Smooth Shower Scrub in the bath or shower will scrub away the dead dehydrated skin, whilst leaving the new skin moisturized. The effective two-in-one formula combines exfoliating granules to scrub away dry rough skin, and moisturizing Jojoba beads for 24-hour active moisture.

Singapore

A city where East meets West in spectacular fashion. WORDS AND IMAGES By Frank Webb

M

any cities proclaim that they are where “East meets West,” and while true to some degree, Singapore lives up to this like it was born for the role. And in a way, it was indeed born to play that role. One may be forgiven for thinking that Walt Disney had a hand in establishing Singapore, but it was actually founded by the British under the leadership of Sir Thomas Raffles in 1819. An independent nation, Singapore is thoroughly British, but also thoroughly Asian by nature of its location and demographic makeup. This small city-state is the commercial and financial hub of Southeast Asia, and one of its major industries is tourism. Singapore is continually remaking itself. There is always something new and exciting to see or do. Looking for something kid-friendly? Looking for an adult good time? No problem; Singapore has it all. With numerous truly world class attractions, you can easily spend weeks exploring this island gem at the tip of the Malaysian peninsula, but if you only have a day or two, here are some of my favorite attractions.

132

Birds and Butterflies Sintosa Island is ‘tourist central’ for Singapore. There are dozens of cool, interesting things to see and do here. You can work on your tan at one of several immaculate, sun-kissed beaches, or visit the bird and butterfly sanctuary adjacent to the Tiger Sky Tower. It is worth an hour or two of your time. I have always been a fan of the Hard Rock Café restaurant franchise, and Sentosa Island has a Hard Rock Hotel – how cool is that? Several more signature hotels are all within a stone’s throw of each other as part of the Sentosa Island Resorts World complex. You can spend an entire Singapore vacation at Resorts World and never wonder what you might have missed in the rest of the city. Bird and Butterfly Park

Flower Power Lights, Camera, Action Want to get behind the scenes of your favorite movie and jump right into the action? You can do just that at Universal Studios Singapore — one of the world’s premier movie and TV based theme parks. It’s also part of the Resorts World complex, and a day here will have you feeling like a Hollywood insider. Insider tip: for an extra $30, purchase the Universal Express pass to avoid the long queues. You’ll get to the head of the line faster than Spielberg can say, “That’s a wrap.”

One of the best ‘secrets’ in Singapore is the Botanical Gardens. If you dislike peace, quiet, and being surrounded by beautiful flora, stay away. You won’t find the tourist crowds of Sintosa here, but you will find a beautiful gem of a park that will become a lasting memory. After Dark For some adult fun, no matter which category you fall into: thirsty hippo, chill cat, lounge lizard, or average party tiger, Singapore takes on a different persona as night falls, and offers a vibrant array of nightlife and entertainment choices. Try the St. James Power Station. Built inside an old power generating plant, this huge venue features 10 different clubs with everything from a quiet wine and bistro bar, to a head banging techno beat dance club. You will find something here to soothe your inner hedonist.

Is it Art or Science? It’s a premier philosophical question of our time and now there is a museum devoted to answering this modern conundrum. But don’t expect a short answer. The ArtScience Museum at Marina Bay Sands resort complex on the Singapore waterfront is almost overwhelming in its architectural statement, but the exhibits are as thought provoking as the building itself. Slightly less avant-garde, and at the opposite end of the architectural spectrum is the Singapore Art Museum (SAM). The building was originally a Catholic boys school built in 1867. Converted to its present function in 1996 at a cost of $330 million, the building itself is considered a national treasure of Singapore. The museum specializes in Asian art, but travelling exhibits from other world class museums are frequently on display.

Rise Above it All Want a soaring view of the city? Then the Singapore Flyer is just the ticket. Modeled after the famed London Eye, the Flyer provides spectacular views of the city’s skyline from a height of 165 metres. This observation wheel – as it is called – is 30 metres taller than the London Eye making it the largest in the world. If you’re an aviation buff, the Singapore Flight Experience, located near the entrance to the Flyer, is for you. Here you will find a fully functional Boeing 737 flight simulator and airline instructors to take you through the paces of flying this commercial jet. An hour here won’t turn you into an airline pilot, and it’s not cheap, but it is loads of fun.

GETTING THERE: Getting to Singapore could not be easier. Qatar Airways has daily non-stop service to Singapore’s ultra-modern airport. Leave home, and about 10 or 12 hours later you’ll be tucked into your downtown Singapore hotel. •

Steve Jobs the Exclusive Biography By Isaacson Walter Steve Jobs is not your ordinary talented electronic engineer, according to Isaacson, but he was definitely a businessman of astounding ability, a genius in the market who could foresee what the customer would want. As an entrepreneur Jobs revolutionized the way the world perceived gadgets and spearheaded a ferocious drive towards a change in six fields: personal computers, animated movies, music, phones, tablet computing, and digital publishing. His passion for perfection fuels many stories and moments that will stun you. A sample of it is when in 2009 Jobs was to have a liver transplant as he had pneumonia. At one time the pulmonologist tried to put a mask over his face when he (Jobs) was sedated. Jobs removed the mask and mumbled that he hated the design and refused point blank to wear it. Instead he instructed the doctors to bring five different options for the mask so that he could pick the design! You can expect many more such instances from Isaacson, who offers a riveting story of a man who had a roller coaster life.

Tune In With ABODE

Tash: The Deep End From the artist who is known for his East and West fusion works that have yielded melodic results in the past, comes Trash’s debut album The Deep End. Its concentration lies in his Turkish-Cypriot roots, which have been mixed with pop melodies and eastern rhythms. Tash’s diverse traits mark this album thanks to his unique mix of Arabic and English phrases within songs.

The Ting Tings: Sounds from Nowheresville Del Ed English dance-pop duo Jules de Martino and Katie White’s music is tailor-finished for Urban Outfitters. The music appears short-lived, fun with nothing else, on it right? But thanks to the duo’s singles like the U.K number one “That’s Not My Name”, they had mustered staying dominance, selling two million copies of Started worldwide. Nowheresville has plenty going, including their stylized music and creative route, which makes it hard for listeners not to root for them!

Cher Lloyd: Sticks + Stones

Demi Lovato: Un Broken

X Factor finalist Cher Lloyd’s debut album Sticks + Stones, features songwriting contributions from Red One and Sundry and presents a great work packaged in a glossy pop rap. Lloyd’s remake of Buffalo Stance is so unabashed that it even renames Neneh Cherry’s 1988 signature hit Playa Boi. The whole time, she has a natural and enigmatic vocal presence. The album is ten tracks of lively, flashy modern pop.

Different from her previous albums, Unbroken is said to be a step away from aggressive pop-rock to more of Demi Lovato’s bonding with R & B and dance music. She teams up with Iyaz, Dev and Jason Derulo and a couple of songs with producer Timbaland. It features hip-hop futurism for high gloss space – pop.

he Forester stands proud under the Doha sun. In medieval times a ‘forester’ held a position of authority equal to a sheriff or law enforcer. The forester kept the woodlands or lord/noble’s property safe from criminals and prevented illegal hunting. And just like the age old profession, the modern day Forester has stood strong on its reputation. The Subaru Forester is a crossover vehicle that blends many of the best attributes of an agile sport-utility vehicle with the ride and driving dynamics of a car. This sure-footed five passenger crossover is beautifully wrapped with long lines, with a height to match and distinguish its presence. Alloy wheels are just added charm to the overall look. The most amazing feature of the car was the panoramic oversized moon roof is nestled in the ceiling, letting in the freshness of morning. adjustment, reclining rear seats, iPod doc and six speakers for playing your tunes whilst sitting in Doha’s busy morning jams. Under the hood the Subaru Forester boasts a 2.5L, 4 cylinder engine that produces 170 horsepower and 174 pound feet of torque. All of which is packaged into an all-wheel drive experience. Just like a trusted steed, the Forester bounds on command with light weight maneuverability. Other ranges of the Forester include the BOXER engine which delivers power and confidence in almost any driving condition. The XT models deliver the added punch of 224 turbocharged horsepower. An important ‘safety feature is the unique ABS – Antilock Braking System which stops wheel lockup whilst braking in unpredictable and sudden traffic situations. The technology of EBD, which is the Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), evens out the abrupt braking.

The brake assist senses a ‘panic-stop’ and full force is applied proactively. This makes a perfect safe solution for those sleepy mornings when you’re on the way to the office. This tall station wagon with its traditional rugged characteristics of an SUV with a car-like feel is not quite the sand bashing type that you want to venture into the desert with, but most definitely is a trusted family car, perfect with a solid build quality for the cosmopolitan city we all call our home. •

Your April Stars By Milina

Scorpio (Oct 23th-Nov 21st)

» You may feel that you can finally move forward after 13 April. Frustration grew steadily as you tried to get new projects and partnerships off the ground. Inspired creativity can help to make your job more interesting or encourage you to find another line of work. The New Moon in Taurus on 21 April emphasizes how important it is to keep things simple.

Sagittarius (Nov 22nd-Dec 21st) Aries (March 21st-April 20th)

» The Full Moon in Libra on 6 April will be a good time for you to work with someone you trust. With your ruler Mars retrograde in Aries until 13 April, you will feel matters have been delayed. Things will speed up after that date, and finally get done. Make sure you don’t overdo it when you get so excited that you take on too much!

Taurus (April 21st-May 20th)

» When the Sun moves into your sign on 19 April, you may sense you are entering a whole new period of growth and change. You will feel free to express your emotions and are ready to go into action. After 21 April you will feel more energetic, and your imagination will be put into practical use. Invest in your future with a sense of purpose.

Gemini (May 21st-June 20th)

» Venus, the planet of love, enters Gemini this month on 3 April. You may feel it is easier to attract positive attention. Mercury turns direct on 4 April, and you’ll feel a sense of liberation in your professional life. After 21 April you can relax and let go. Enjoy yourself while you have an opportunity. Keep your integrity and think about what you say.

Cancer (June 21st-July 20th)

» On 10 April Pluto turns retrograde, and you may have to have a good look at the past. It is time to let go and finish what you can. After 13 April, projects that have been put aside may ask your attention. If you cannot improve things, let them be. After the New Moon in Taurus on 21 April, a new cycle of activities with friends and colleagues will begin. Enjoy it!

148

After a long retrograde period, Mars will go direct on 13 April. In which area of your life do you feel energized and are you ready to go into action?

Leo (July 21st-August 22nd)

» This month is a turning point for you in every sense of the word. Around 13 April you have to be aware of some confusion before you are ready to move on. Your energy level is high after 16 April. This is a time to be courageous and not give up. Hard work will lead to success and realizing your dreams. Focus carefully so your losses can be turned into gains.

Virgo (August 23th-Sept 22nd)

» As your ruler Mercury turns direct on 4 April, negotiations and contacts will improve. Around 13 April, extra energy will help you to become physically more active and assertive in achieving your goals. Set your priorities and remain focussed! Flexibility will help you to work on different things at the same time. Trust your instincts and move at your own pace.

Libra (Sept 23th-Oct 22nd)

» You may have felt a loss of direction with Mars retrograde from 23 January. The first half of the month will still be a bit confusing, but don’t give up. Your energy will return and things will become clearer. Keep your objectivity in matters of love and relationship. Cleaning out physical and emotional baggage will free you at the end of the month.

» Your professional progress may have slowed down lately, and you may have experienced delays and frustrations in many areas. That will change after 13 April when you can reassert yourself and move on with your plans. Although your enthusiastic nature will want you to get results quickly, you may have to be patient and focus on the longer term. Cooperate with others.

Capricorn (Dec 22nd-Jan 19th)

» This month you will finally be able to finish some old business and move on. After clearing up some misunderstandings you are ready for a fresh start. Be open to other people’s wishes, even if you prefer to operate at your own pace. After 19 April, slow down and enjoy the small things in life. You will feel pragmatic toward the end of the month, and this will produce concrete results in every area of your life.

Aquarius (Jan 20th-Feb 18th)

» In April you will break free from the limitations of the past. Changes that began in 2011 will continue, even if they have been put on the back burner for some time. Your routines will change and you will feel more energetic. The New Moon in Taurus on 21 April will help you to develop the stamina and strength to finish what you have started. Stick to your plans.

Pisces (Feb 19th-March 20th)

» After feeling you weren’t making any progress during the last few months you are ready for a change in April. Make the most of your relationships around the Libra Full Moon on 6 April. When Mars turns direct on 13 April, you will feel energized and it is a good time to start new projects and relationships. After 19 April you may want to keep things simple. Find pleasure in the things that surround you.
