CONSTRUCTED IMPROVISATIONS PROFESSOR BENNETT NEIMAN SUMMER - 2015

[ improvisation ] noun [ improvisational ] adjective the action of improvising. • something that is improvised, especially a piece of music, drama, etc., created without preparation: free-form jazz improvisations. [ assemblage ] noun a collection or gathering of things or people. • a machine or object made of pieces fitted together. • a work of art made by grouping found or unrelated objects. • the action of gathering or fitting things together.

[ 01 ]

[ Constructed Improvisations ] This studio presents a series of architectonic experiments that transpose, manipulate and articulate the links, connections, joints and transitions present in improvisation. The process of constructing variations on a theme involves an expanding series of analog and digital design techniques developed over many years. It is a poetic design process driven by actions instead of words. The context is itself. It grows, refers and communicates within. The material is form regulated by light. The function is the psychological demand of space. The budget is time, passion and commitment to the study of a pure architecture. The production is for the effect of production.

the site is a mediation between earth and sky that engages the speculative section.

[ sequence strips ] and [ architectonic relief ] the arrangement of several assemblages views into photographic sequences poses intriguing possibilities. spatial relationships, layering, rhythms, movement, ironic twists, transitions, and other elements of connectivity are considered. design is the reinterpretation of spatial viewpoints into a rhythmic linear sequence. [ 04 ]

PROFESSOR PETER RAAB SUMMER - 2014

[ micro ] to [ macro ] we began this studio studying space at an individual scale, considering different ways to design a 200 sq. ft. room while accomidating for code requirements within the space. after a site visit to the riverwalk in san antonio, tx, we began designing at the macro level, using our designed room as a bridge to the larger boutique hotel we were to design. the proposal provides a key pedestrian connection to the riverwalk from the san fernando cathedral and plaza. designed with local materials as used by many of the other building along the riverwalk and surrounding areas, the boutique hotel uses limestone, concrete, wood, and takes advantage of the abundant amount of vegetation.

in the development process, digital design and fabrication techniques are used to generate a new streetscape for ave. j in lubbock. the idea of urban stage is to rethink downtown but also the typical street design and greenery of lubbock under its location as a natural gateway to the plains. given the opportunity to design some sort of seating assembly for the urban stage, several design iterations took place. inexpensive or donated materials had to be sought after an original idea of a bench made of pool noodles became out of reach for the budget allowed to us. the final design provides a free form surface for one to sit on. the ‘tentacles’ of the bench reach out to the surrounding installations giving the bench a real sense of space.

PRODUCT DESIGN PROFESSOR UPE FLUECKIGER SPRING - 2015

[ rip lamp ] The original design of the lamp used four solid pieces for the walls of the lamp. This made more of a spotlight wight light coming out of only one end. With this rib design, light is diffused to all sides in a more visually interesting way. The color RED is given to the horizontal structure of the lamp and the color BLACK is given to the vertical structure. The BLACK ribs hold the RED ribs and the acrylic legs in place. This creates a grid-like structure for the light to diffuse through. [ 17 ]

since the summer of 2008, i have had the opportunity to intern for an oil and gas company as a draftsman. the company, located in andrews texas, was in need of someone with CAD experience to update survey drawings and also to create as-built drawings of certain facilities. during my second summer i was appointed project manager for the construction of a 65’ ramp that was to be added to an existing facility. I continue to intern part time for LOTUS LLC as i finish my graduate degree.
