We’re taking mammograms to a whole new dimension. 3 - D MAM MOG R AM S
Now available at St. Luke’s Sugar Land Hospital According to the American Cancer Society, the early detection of breast cancer saves thousands of lives each year. One of the newest tools in this effort is 3-D mammography, or tomosynthesis, which is now available at St. Luke’s Sugar Land Hospital. 3-D mammograms allow physicians to take images from different angles, providing sharper, better quality results and a reduction in “false positives.” The new technology is recommended for women with dense breast tissue and allows physicians to view images with pinpoint accuracy in order to detect smaller tumors earlier. See if a mammogram is the answer for you. Call 281-637-7001 today for an appointment.

Ready or not, here it comes: the beginning of the school year. It seems like the summer flew by, and for many of us, we are trying to get in our last family outing before the bell rings and school is in session. While the Houston area no longer boasts a world class amusement park, a short drive to San Antonio is worth the time. One of my family’s favorite places to visit in San Antonio is SeaWorld. Whether you want to experience the thrill of the roller coasters – which I don’t – or enjoy the shows featuring God’s majestic creatures up close and personal, there truly is something for everyone there, and the kids always love the wet ‘n wild experience. I must confess: I love the animals, the amazing shows and beautiful, meticulously maintained grounds. I’m not big on the wet part, but a momma does what her children love with grace and a tall order of perseverance. As we prepare for back to school, it’s time for the annual doctor and dentist visits. In our special Medical Focus beginning on page 28, you will find many of Fort Bend’s finest medical providers to help get your little ones ready for the coming year. And, don’t forgot about taking care of mom. Patti, Kolton, Shamu, Kassidi and Tim Our cover story explores the many stages at SeaWorld San Antonio. in women’s lives and the exemplary care available right here in our community at Memorial Hermann. As always, absolutely! Brazos is out and about taking photos and visiting with our readers and advertisers to bring what’s important, new and relevant to you in a community magazine. And, we’ll do just about anything to be able to visit with you – including suiting up. Our team recently had the opportunity to see how the da Vinci Si Surgical System works firsthand, so we went in, scrubs and all, to capture this amazing system on film and bring it into your homes. Texas Direct Auto and Houston Humane Society Announces Goal of Finding Homes for 1,000 Animals Through ASPCA $100K Challenge The organization hopes to beat its own record of adopting out the animals it shelters with help from local partner
T
his summer, the Houston Humane Society, with support from Texas Direct Auto, has the goal of adopting out 1,000 of its animals as part of the ASPCA Rachael Ray $100K Challenge, a national campaign designed to save as many animals’ lives as possible. As one of 50 shelters selected from across the country to participate in the $100K Challenge, the Houston Humane Society is competing to break its own record of saving animals’ lives in June, July and August. The Challenge offers a $100,000 grand prize, which could assist the Houston Humane Society in sheltering even more of the City’s animals and in finding them forever homes. The Houston Humane Society is ecstatic to have found a partner in Texas Direct Auto, the “World’s Largest Independent Dealership,” for the Challenge. In addition to selling cars and offering exceptional financing, the dealership acts as an advocate for animals and recently opened the Texas Direct Auto Dog Park. Texas Direct Auto’s Director of Business Development Jessica DeMarr is thrilled to support the Houston Humane Society in the Challenge by donating water, promotional products and various items needed during the competition. “This is a great opportunity for both Texas Direct Auto and the Houston Humane Society to find homes for the wonderful pets located at the shelter,” DeMarr said. “I’m eager to work with the Houston Humane Society this
summer and get the community just as excited as we are to help reach the goal of adopting 1,000 animals into loving homes.” To help achieve its goal of adopting out 1,000 animals this summer, the Houston Humane Society is planning multiple summer events, including movie nights, dog washes, animal adoption speed “dating” and much more. Furthermore, the organization hopes that Houstonians and other surrounding communities will participate in the Challenge not only by adopting but also by spreading the word and encouraging others to visit the facility to meet the adoptables. Sherry Ferguson, Executive Director of the Houston Humane Society, believes these initiatives are imperative for the organization to reach its goal. “I’m thrilled the Houston Humane Society is involved in the ASPCA $100K Challenge,” Ferguson said. “Our goal is and always has been to provide the highest quality of care and find homes for the animals we shelter. The Challenge will help bring awareness to this and through our summer events, the community will be able to get involved, have fun and find forever friends!” For questions regarding the $100K Challenge and the events surrounding the summer campaign, the organization’s partnership with Texas Direct Auto or more information about the Houston Humane Society, please visit the organization’s website at www.houstonhumane.org.

Caring For Women For Life Memorial Hermann Sugar Land Understands Women’s Unique Needs
A
t every stage of life, women need a trusted health
partner that understands their unique needs. Memorial Hermann Sugar Land Hospital is that partner. From maternity and children’s care to breast health and gynecological surgeries, women know they can count on Memorial Hermann for comprehensive and compassionate care throughout their lives. 10
The Sweet Anticipation of a New Baby Regardless of whether a woman is expecting her first or her fourth baby, Memorial Hermann Sugar Land seeks to make each pregnancy and childbirth an extraordinary experience. As recipient of the 2013 Maternity Care Excellence Award™ from Healthgrades®, Memorial Hermann Sugar Land ranks among the top five percent of hospitals nationwide in maternity care. Helpful educational programs include childbirth preparation, breastfeeding basics, newborn care, hospital tours and a sibling class. When it comes time to deliver, moms appreciate the private birthing suites that provide single-room maternity care. “I liked being able to stay in the same suite for labor, delivery and our

stay,” said Fort Bend resident Amy Raley. “I also liked how we could send our baby to the nursery if we needed to, and we did send him there for four or five hours the first night so I could get some sleep.” The spacious and tastefully decorated rooms include hotel-like amenities: whirlpool tub, refrigerator, television, DVD player and a convertible guest bed. Complimentary music and massage therapies are also available. “My husband loved the bed for his overnight stay,” said Raley. “It was much bigger than the bed we had at the last hospital where we delivered.” New moms, like Raley, also appreciate the knowledgeable nursing staff that is dedicated to meeting their every need. “The nurses were really great,” said Raley. “We could call them about anything at any time, and they were very helpful in answering questions.”
“Memorial Hermann Sugar Land has a very experienced staff,” said Chantal Nguyen-Tran, M.D., a Memorial Hermann-affiliated obstetrician/ gynecologist. “The nurses are very specialized to meet each patient’s needs, while the hospital excels in maintaining safety and quality in all aspects of patient care.” That focus on quality attracted obstetrician/gynecologist Jeffery Gubbels, M.D., to Memorial Hermann Sugar Land when he was practicing with South Texas Medical Clinics, which has since been acquired by the Memorial Hermann Medical Group. “The availability of high quality anesthesia and an onsite NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit) nursery to care for premature babies and newborns with special health needs are key reasons to work with Memorial Hermann Sugar Land,” said Dr. Gubbels who has offices in Rosenberg, Wharton and Sugar Land. “Their commitment to quality and safety is the compelling reason that doctors choose to deliver there.”
Dr. Kelli Burroughs with Amy and Landon Raley.
Specialized Care for High-Risk Pregnancies Even before she delivered, Raley learned she had elevated protein levels
in her urine. Her physician, Kelli Burroughs, M.D., whom Raley raves about with accolades like “amazing, very positive, a good listener and very open,” referred her to the hospital’s HighRisk Pregnancy Clinic. Open Monday through Friday, the clinic is a collaboration between Memorial Hermann Sugar Land and UTHealth Medical School. “When a patient has elevated protein levels, we always suspect pre-eclampsia, which can increase the blood pressure and affect kidney function,” said Dr. Burroughs, a Memorial Hermann-affiliated obstetrician/gynecologist. “In very rare cases, this can be a risk factor for still birth, so that’s one of the reasons I wanted to bring in the High-Risk Pregnancy Clinic to monitor Amy and her baby.” The High-Risk Pregnancy Clinic provides specialized testing and consultation for complicated and highrisk pregnancies. Affiliated physicians, with board certification in both obstetrics/gynecology and maternal-fetal medicine, serve in a consultancy role as women continue to see their obstetricians. Alfredo Gei, M.D., is one of those physicians. Every day is unique as he and his colleagues care for women with pre-existing conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, asthma and anemia. Other conditions commonly referred to the clinic are women carrying multiples, those who will be 35 or older at the time of delivery or have a history of cancer or multiple miscarriages, and those with decreased fetal growth. Increasingly, the clinic is seeing women who have undergone bariatric surgery since that reduces stomach capacity and can result in vitamin deficiencies. “We collaborate with local physicians to treat their patients,” said Dr. Gei. “The maternal-fetal medicine physicians provide the doctors with phone consultations, and we see their patients in our clinic. If a patient is admitted to the hospital, and they want us to see her right away, we will.” In Raley’s case, her elevated protein levels proved to be benign, and she delivered a healthy baby at 38 weeks.
Memorial Hermann Sugar Land Ranks Among Top in the Nation At Memorial Hermann Sugar Land, quality and patient safety are core values that drive the staff to provide the best possible outcomes for patients. This relentless commitment has resulted in the hospital earning these accolades: • 2013 Maternity Care Excellence Award™ awarded by Healthgrades®, ranking it among the top 5 percent of hospitals nationwide • 2011 and 2012 Top Performers on Key Quality Measures™ as measured by The Joint Commission, ranking it in the top 18 percent in the nation • Pathway to Excellence® designation by American Nurses Credentialing Center • 100 Top Hospitals® 2012 awarded by Truven Health Analytics (formerly Thomson Reuters) • Five-Star Award from Texas Department of State Health Services for exemplary work in caring for newborns and their families Additionally, the Memorial Hermann Health System serves as a national leader in quality care. Delivering More Than Babies: Mammograms for Preventative Care Of course, giving birth is just one stage of a woman’s life. By age 40, women should undergo a baseline mammogram. Memorial Hermann Sugar Land offers the latest technology, breast tomosynthesis, to empower women to be proactive in monitoring their breast health. Tomosynthesis is a cutting-edge, digital technology that creates a highly focused 3-D picture of the breast, detecting smaller tumors at the earliest stages of breast cancer. Dedicated breast radiologists, like Rui Song, M.D., who work with this advanced technology say it significantly reduces patient callbacks needed to conduct more tests when suspicious areas are detected with 2-D mammography. Digital tomosynthesis uses X-rays to make a three-second, arc-shaped sweep of the breast, creating multiple images from different angles. This eliminates problems found in traditional 2-D mammograms where overlapping breast tissue can hide potential tumors. “Tomosynthesis is more specific and more sensitive in detecting cancer so we can see smaller cancers earlier,” said Song, a Memorial Hermann-affiliated breast radiologist. “Satisfaction with mammograms, from patients and referring physicians, has soared.”
Staying Healthy Through Mid-Life and Beyond As women age, they can experience urine leakage. The two most common conditions that cause this are urinary stress incontinence and overactive bladder. Stress incontinence occurs when coughing, laughing, sneezing or during other activities that put pressure on the bladder and urethra. Other contribut-

ing factors include vaginal childbirths, obesity and straining associated with constipation. “These stresses weaken the pelvic floor muscles and the ligaments that support the urethra,” said Nina Dereska, M.D., a Memorial Hermann-affiliated urogynecologist. Medication to treat stress incontinence is generally ineffective, but inserting a plastic pessary into the vagina can obstruct leakage. “The gold standard and most effective treatment for stress incontinence is the bladder sling,” said Dereska. “This is where we support the urethra with a safe, FDAapproved mesh material to recreate the ligaments and hold up the urethra.” With overactive bladder, there is an urge to urinate because of bladder twitches or contractions. Treatment can be as simple as modifying fluid intake or strengthening the pelvic floor muscles through physical therapy. Sev-

eral once-daily medications have proven effective in three out of four women. Other treatments include nerve stimulation therapies like Urgent®PC and InterStim®, as well as Botox injected into the bladder.
Committed to an Exceptional Patient Experience From motherhood through menopause and beyond, Memorial Hermann Sugar Land is committed to delivering to women an exceptional patient experience. By combining quality, patientcentered care with advanced technologies, they serve as a trusted partner to help women live healthy, productive lives. Visit memorialhermann.org to learn more.

he beginning of a difficult journey: All of my life, I set my goals.
Get married, have kids, retire early, travel with my husband and enjoy life. I was moving right along, too. I got a college degree, married, had three children, taught school and coached swimming. My dad, at age ninety, was having some health issues at the time. Therefore, my husband Bill and I moved him to Fulshear to live with us. Then, it happened! The “c” word. The one word that knocks you on your butt. And that word is cancer! After extensive surgery, I began taking chemotherapy treatments for ovarian stage three metastatic cancer. My
journey has been a revolving door ever since. But what an incredible ride it has been! Who would have thought that so much good could come out of so much pain and suffering?

bout Ride, Baby, Ride!: Ride,
Baby, Ride! is a moving and poignant, yet very humorous story about the challenges of facing ovarian cancer. When this type of life crisis arises, it is easy for a person to get despondent and withdraw into a world of despair or denial. But, you can choose to fight. Having an uplifting feeling is what this book is all about. The idea for the book came after I began writing e-mails that I called “Monday Updates” to friends and family giving them an up-to-date progress report on
ow I hope readers benefit from reading Ride, Baby, Ride!:
Helping you overcome this disease with a good mental attitude is the book’s main benefit. Those sharing this difficult time with a loved one will also relate and benefit from what is being said throughout the pages of the book. My hope is that it will bring inspiration and determination to those who need it the most and that it will give courage and motivation to those facing any life crisis and bring some humor back into their lives.

High School HOT SHOT Kristofer Wright: On the Right Track
K
ristofer Wright, 2013 graduate of Needville High School, received the Fighting Heart athletic award at the annual sports banquet. The award goes to the athlete who shows the most heart – someone who refuses to give up in difficult times. The expression on Kristofer’s face when he received the award was “priceless,” said Mr. Janacek, Kristofer’s principal. “I was astonished, and I was amazed,” said Kristofer. Kristofer has been participating in sports since the seventh grade. Although his favorite sport is football, and he really enjoys playing football, he said, “I knew I could do something in track. Coach Valentine helped me get through some adversity through the years. Everybody was bigger than me, and they didn’t think I was going to go anywhere. He motivated me and encouraged me a lot.” “My coach saw me achieve my dream, which was making the finals for the track for the 100 meter dash. I wanted to go to the area meet, but I wasn’t the fastest, so I practiced a lot, got my speed up and made myself faster. Coach Valentine said, ‘That’s all I ask.’ I got to where I wanted to be. I had to make myself be where I wanted to be.” Kristofer conquered any obstacles that stood in his way. “My mom encouraged me to keep going and to keep doing what I wanted to do,” he said. Coach Valentine said, “Kris is a great kid. He epitomizes what we mean by the fighting heart. It doesn’t necessarily have to be the biggest, fastest, strongest or best athlete. It’s someone you can count on every single day to give you everything they have and do it without question. He’s 100 percent loyal to his coaches and teammates. He has tremendous character the way he works every single day. The thing that stuck out to me was, as a freshman, he made a goal to make the finals in the 100 meter in the district track meet. He made the finals, but he didn’t place.”
er f o t s i r K
Kristofer Wright with Coach Jamie Valentine and mom Lisa Morphis.
“It meant so much to him to try to achieve that goal. He had worked so hard and had gotten so much stronger and faster from where he was four years ago because of the way he works,” said Coach Valentine. “He increased his speed by spending time in the weight room. We do various drills throughout the year to help increase speed and strength. Kris would always push himself above and beyond through everything we asked him to do.” Kristofer plans on going into the National Guard and, hopefully, to college. For a career, he’s thinking of working as an aircraft mechanic or possibly becoming a teacher or coach. “Even though there are obstacles in life, you can overcome them,” said Kristofer. “People may put you down sometimes. You just have to keep practicing and do what you have to do to make yourself better.”
“You just have to keep practicing and do what you have to do to make yourself better.” – Kristofer Wright 18

The Benefits of Going to a Prosthodontist Do you feel self-conscious about your smile? Do you cover your mouth when you talk? A healthy smile is among the top aspects of a person’s appearance that impacts self-esteem. If you are unhappy about the “look” of your smile, you should consult a prosthodontist. But what is a prosthodontist? A prosthodontist is an expert in the restoration and replacement of teeth – they make smiles look beautiful and function the way they should. Having this advanced training, Dr. Rimes can improve your appearance by fixing broken, discolored or missing teeth, many times in just one appointment. Dr. Rimes’ training also gives patients the opportunity to switch from dentures to permanent implant supported teeth in just one day. Did you know that some dentists perform reconstructive dental work after just a weekend course on a procedure? You should know prosthodontists receive an extra three years of intense, formal training at an accredited institution beyond dental school. People seeking cosmetic, reconstructive or implant retained dental work should do research before making a decision in order to ensure proper care. As ADA recognized specialists, prosthodontists are qualified to offer service in state-of-the-art procedures and techniques, such as cosmetic dentistry, dental implants, teeth-in-a-day restorations, complete and removable partial dentures, snoring and sleep disorders. By using his extensive training in cosmetic dentistry along with the latest techniques in dental implants, Dr. Rimes can help you create a smile that looks and feels natural and attractive. If you are considering a change to a healthy smile, call Dr. Stuart Rimes at 281313-1565. For more information, visit www.rimesdds.com.

The Complete Approach to Cosmetic Surgery Planning cosmetic surgery is an exciting process. A desire to feel better about yourself – and fit into your older clothing size – is a common reason to consider cosmetic surgery. When that feeling goes beyond a basic dissatisfaction in your appearance and becomes a more serious frustration, it is more important to think about the reasons you’re thinking about it. For example, it’s not unusual for someone to be a few pounds overweight and to want liposuction. The best way to get a better shape in that case is to lose the weight. The shape of the area will certainly improve as well as your general health. Liposuction is not a good way to lose weight. In fact, clients who are significantly overweight are very poor candidates for it. It is not a cure for being overweight, but is intended to tailor body shape. Patients find that getting the right shape only reduces their weight by a small amount. In order to keep your weight down, it’s important to exercise and eat right. Many people think that since they are having liposuction, they can eat whatever they want beforehand and not really take care of themselves. In fact, the opposite is true. Your result will be much, much better if you’re in better physical condition because more accurate shaping can be done. Malik Kutty, MD is a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon at Luxe Plastic Surgery in Sugar Land. For more information, call 281-313-0551.

Literature has proven the benefits of fluoride in drastically reducing dental caries, especially in children. An optimal amount of fluoride is available in many community water supplies to allow this benefit to occur. As with everything in life, however, too much of a good thing is not necessarily beneficial. Fluorosis is a condition in which chronic ingestion of optimal amounts of fluoride can cause defects in tooth enamel. In this condition, the enamel remains strong, but it can show discoloration that may be aesthetically displeasing and expensive to mask. Excessive ingestion of fluoride can occur in several ways: water fluoridation is not properly regulated, fluoride supplementation is used incorrectly or a child ingests excessive amounts of fluoridated toothpaste. Improperly reconstituted infant formula may also be a source of excessive fluoride. Several adult teeth begin formation during the first couple months of life, so any higher than normal fluoride intake during that time can affect dental development. Powdered formula contains some fluoride, and when fluoridated tap water is added to prepare it for feeding, too much fluoride can be ingested. Several articles have shown an association between formula preparation and mild fluorosis. For this reason, the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) encourages dentists to educate parents on ways to reconstitute formula to minimize any risks of developing this dental disorder. Your local pediatric dentist should have information about optimal fluoride intake for infants and children and should also be aware of fluoride levels in local water supplies. He will be able to address your concerns regarding fluorosis and infant formula reconstitution. For more information, call Grand Parkway Pediatric Dental at 832-222-TOTS or visit www.grandparkwaypediatricdental.com.

Teeth-By-Tonight!™ Dental Implants in One Procedure Dr. Rick Kline has devoted most of his professional career to helping those who have already lost or are losing their natural teeth to either accident or disease. Over his 18-year career, Dr. Kline has been on the cutting edge of every new development in this highly technical field. His signature procedure, Teeth-By-Tonight!™, is the culmination of a life’s work devoted to replacing lost smiles through the use of dental implants. Now, Dr. Kline can accomplish in a single procedure what used to require four to six procedures spread over a year or more. This miraculous advancement is made possible by the physics of placing multiple implants at just the right angles so that they can immediately support and
strengthen each other. As such, Dr. Kline can remove any remaining “bad” teeth, place dental implants and build a beautiful new smile to attach to those implants all in one procedure. The patient’s new smile has most of its biting and chewing power instantly. Plus, the new replacement teeth cover any gum tissue that was traumatized during the procedure. So, the patients report almost no discomfort or recovery time. They typically eat a light meal the evening after the procedure and can eat nearly anything the next day. The 4th Annual Great Grown-Up Spelling Bee is Buzzing with Opportunities
Manish Asthana and Heather and Trey Reichert are returning champs from the 2012 Great Grown-Up Spelling Bee, the Spelling Stones. The Spelling Stones issue the 2013 challenge: “Bee there or bee square.”
Have you heard the newzzzz?! The bees are buzzing around Fort Bend County as the Literacy Council’s 4th Annual Great Grown-Up Spelling Bee is quickly approaching! The Grown-Up Spelling Bee, presented by CenterPoint Energy, is a corporate-style dinner that will take place on Thursday, September 12th from 6:30 to 8:30 pm at the University of Houston-Sugar Land. Watch your neighbors, co-workers and friends compete against one another to win a coveted spot in the “Honey Hall of Fame.” Enter a team of three adults for $500 to compete and earn the b-r-a-g-g-a-d-o-c-i-o rights as the “Best GrownUp Spellers in the County.” Sponsorship and underwriting opportunities are available for this event, and they range in price from $100 to $5,000. Underwriting opportunities are available at the $1,200 and $2,500 level. Underwriters receive a discounted team fee. In addition to regular sponsorships, smaller sponsorships are available, such as “Bee a Word Sponsor” for $200. At the $200 level, the sponsor will have a spelling word that is related to their business called during the Bee as one of the spelling words. For $100, a sponsor can be a letter in the “A-Bee-C’s for Literacy” or “Friends of Literacy” alphabet sponsorship opportunity. Sponsors have the chance to claim the first letter of their business name, last name, children’s name, etc. and have that letter represent their business or their family. The “Literacy Alphabets” will be displayed at the event and on the website. If you have never donated to the Literacy Council, now is your chance! There are other various opportunities to sponsor this event, and all proceeds benefit the life changing programs of the Literacy Council. The returning “Bee” emcee will be Nancy Olson, joined by judges Mayor Evalyn Moore and Mayor Vincent Morales Jr. Will you “Bee” there or “Bee” square? Tickets are $40 if purchased pre-event and $45 if purchased at the door. For more information, visit grownupbee.com or contact the Literacy Council at 281.240.8181. CHEVROLET SILVERADO T
he new 2014 Chevrolet Silverado has just raised the bar for all fullsize pickups. After much anticipation, this light-duty truck is arriving in showrooms outdoing both itself and the competition. If that seems a bit much, here’s something: the new Silverado’s V8 engine gets estimated fuel economy equal to Ford’s base V6 and better than its vaunted EcoBoost. And that’s just the beginning. Pickup truck competition amongst the Detroit Three automakers is brutally fierce because trucks are very profitable. Once trucks were designed with few creature comforts and to handle the rough conditions of ranches and work sites. But in the 1990s, when gas was a whole lot cheaper, pickups gained a huge fan base among consumers who
40
never used them for anything more than driving. But once gasoline prices moved north of three dollars, those consumers fled the scene. The new Silverado’s estimated fuel economy may just lure those casual truck owners back to dealer showrooms. The 2014 Chevy Silverado boasts three all-new engines designed to deliver it class-leading fuel economy. Named Ecotech 3, this new family of engines shares the same displacement as the ones in last year’s Silverado, but don’t be mislead. These engines are completely different. The base engine is a 285 hp, 305 lb-ft of torque 4.3 liter V6 whose estimated fuel economy at this writing has yet to be announced. But if the fuel economy numbers of the V8 are any indication, expect the V6 to be a gas sipper. The 355 hp, 383 lb-ft of torque 5.3 liter V8 will get you better fuel economy than Ford’s F-150 V6 EcoBoost with 16 mpg in the city and 23 mpg on the highway. Both powertrains feature direct injection, imperceptible cylinder deactivation and six-speed transmissions. A 6.2 liter V8 will be available later this year
AUGUST 2013 l TO ADVERTISE CALL 281.690.4242
but numbers on that one aren’t available as of yet either. The new Silverado’s “living room quiet“ interior was seriously upgraded with new technology and loads more storage space. The centerpiece of the dashboard is the new MyLink multimedia interface featuring a crisp eight-inch display that you swipe like a smartphone. There are more nooks and crannies to stash stuff than ever before, and the cloth seats are advertised as easier to clean. The Chevrolet engineers are claiming that their new model is a product of “evolution not revolution.” It may be a quiet jump, but it has propelled the 2014 Silverado ahead of its main competitors, the Ram 1500 and the Ford F-150, in multiple categories. A LITTLE PIECE O F HIST O RY
A more current photo of the 1883 Moore House.
By Joan Frances
“The strength of a nation is derived from the integrity of its homes.” – Confucius
T
he history of Fort Bend is learned through museums and records, and fortunately for our area, beautiful vintage homes. These historical homes are reminders of days past that capture the true essence of what life was like over one hundred years ago, built to last a lifetime. Located at 406 South Fifth Street in Richmond, Texas, stands a stunning Victorian classical revival plantation home built in 1883 by Thomas Culshaw. This home is known as the Moore House. John Matthew Moore was born in Richmond, attended Texas A&M University, served as a United States Congressman and was a cattleman. This Gothic Victorian home was John’s wedding present to his wife Lottie Dyer Moore. The home was built on 12,000 acres of land inherited from Lottie’s father, J. Foster Dyer, who died a year before the wedding. Her grandparents, Nancy Gray Spencer Barnett and Thomas Barnett, were part of the original Stephen F. Austin colonists. Their central focus of income was the county’s largest ranching operation with 7,000 cattle.
Congressman John M. Moore's home.

The Moore House was home to the Moore family for over ninety years, where Lottie gave birth to three sons and two daughters. John Moore was very active in politics, and from 1888 to 1892, he was president of the Fort Bend County Jaybird Democratic Association. He was engaged in the bitter feud that resulted in serious altercations and numerous deaths. Moore witnessed the Battle of Richmond on August 16, 1889 where armed fighting took place around the courthouse, the National Hotel and the McFarlane residence. Resolution was reached in October ending the 20-year turbulence. Moore’s oldest son, John Jr., was the mayor of Richmond for two terms and served as a judge in Fort Bend County. The younger son, Hilmer, served as mayor of Richmond for 30 terms beginning in 1949, making him the longest-serving elected official in the United States. In the original floor plan, this majestic two-story Victorian home had four bedrooms with a center tower and cupola. The structure is sound and well-built, constructed of mortise and pegged heart of pine lumber with cedar siding, pine flooring and foundation blocks. After his 1905 election, Moore contracted C.H. Page and Brothers of Austin to remodel the home in a Neo-Classical style popular during the early 20th century. Six huge white columns support the front of the home with a sidewalk that leads to an arched front door welcoming distinguished guests. modeling and a front entry stairway. The First Baptist Church of Richmond originated in the Moore House, where church service was held in one of the spacious rooms on the bottom floor. The Moore family was always gracious and sharing with the community. Lottie died in 1924 and John in 1940; the family inheritors continued to live there until 1975.
The glassed-in porch of the Moore House is a prime location for small private gatherings.
Today, the Fort Bend County Museum Association has kept the home upgraded and beautifully displayed. Downstairs is a museum of fine furnishings and heirlooms reflective of the time the Moores enjoyed their home raising children. Upstairs are meeting rooms and space for exhibits. Weddings and special events are held all year. In December, the Moore House hosts the popular Candlelight Tour. Themes are selected and decorating is tastefully planned and orchestrated by the Fort Bend Museum Docents contributive to the era. Vintage homes like the Moore House will always be a valuable key to understanding the past and how people lived, and maintaining the history of our vintage homes helps make our nation strong.
