he historic cresting of the Brazos River in June brought a fear-imbued awe to residents throughout Fort Bend County. The mere fact it was happening, and nothing could stop it, was almost unbelievable. It was Memorial Day weekend when a heavy anxiety settled on the shoulders of city officials who knew the Brazos River would crest to the highest level ever recorded in Fort Bend County, eradicating the 50.3 foot record set in 1994.

operations we have in our facility in Missouri City, where we serve people in need from all over the county with basic needs and resources to take next steps in their lives,” said White, the executive director of Second Mile Mission, a local nonprofit. “We set up a registration and intake area, where we listened to families and got a sense of their needs.” Kyles said despite the fact that wreckage of this magnitude was foreign to most people in the area, the participants in the Brazos River Flood Recovery movement brought expertise and dedication to the table, which is why the recovery effort was so successful. The same evening, the recovery effort was put into play. Volunteers had helped 47 people before the doors had even officially opened. By Monday, June 6th, the Brazos River Flood Recovery had serviced 1,000 people, and by June 7th, word had hit the streets of where people could go for help. “The first official day at B.F. Terry, we saw more than 200 families,” White said. “This is triple what we normally see at Second Mile in Missouri City.” Representatives from the Fort Bend County Office of Emergency Management visited the Brazos River Flood Recovery center and designated the site as a Multi-Agency Resource Center. After that, organization after organization joined the recovery effort. “It has been amazing to see everyone come together,” Kyles said. “In all, 137 organizations came together to meet the needs of those in our cities.”

Exceptional Volunteers Like the wheels in a large machine, the volunteers of the relief effort — more than 2,800 people who have contributed more than 21,000 hours as of late June — kept things moving forward. “The volunteers are a perfect example of people who came together for a cause that is much greater than themselves,” Kyles said. “They’ve done so much more than they even realized to make this possible,” White said of the volunteers, most of whom came from the CHURCH’s volunteer base. “They’ve done a world class job of feeding, receiving and receipting every donation, sharing stories on social media and bringing awareness of the conditions at ‘ground zero’ of the flooded areas.” Volunteers from throughout the community showed up to do what they could to help those in need, as well as show their support for the organizations coordinating the relief effort. United States Representative Pete Olson and his wife Nancy toured and volunteered at the center where he said, he, too, was gratified by the efforts of ordinary people doing exceptional work. “As our region continues flood recovery efforts, I put hundreds of miles on my truck touring the areas of Texas 22 most impacted,” Olson said. “It was heartwarming to see folks stepping up to help one another in a time of need. people were served at the Terry High School site. While the recovery center has been a success, it will have to relocate before school starts, but that is just one of the concerns of Brazos River Flood Recovery. “Temporary and longterm housing is at the forefront of everyone’s thoughts,” White said. “It’s a top priority for the families affected and for local officials and planners. Along with that, there are immediate needs and interim gap-filling measures to support families until the long-term plan is in place.” Kyles said the recovery effort is a three-step process. The first step was meeting the emergency needs, which Brazos River Flood Recovery effort did starting June 4th, but the relief effort is in the second step, which is focused on temporary housing. “We’ve begun working with the Office of Emergency Management and city officials to make sure there is temporary housing available to people while their homes are being repaired,” Kyles said. “Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) also recognizes this need and is setting up options. “In addition to temporary housing, our ongoing goal is to connect people to the right agencies,” Kyles added. “United Way, FEMA, AccessHealth and the like. And this is why we liked to have families come to us, because they could get information on three or four services at a time in one location.” But what Kyles stresses is that there is a long-term plan in play. “Those affected by the flood will not be

forgotten,” Kyles said. “There is hope, and we’re here for the long haul so we can help them rebuild their lives.” The long-term plan focuses on actually restoring the homes of those affected by the flood. Kyles said Brazos River Flood Recovery has already secured a warehouse where supplies and equipment will be stored, managed and protected so that when families are ready to start rebuilding, those supplies will make it to those in need. “We need your help. Don’t think this is over. It’s just begun,” said White. “Around 90 percent of what we received is clothing, but that’s not all we need going forward.” For the long-term, gift cards to Lowe’s and Home Depot are being requested to assist with home repair. “We will need financial help for supplies and manpower for the longterm plan to work,” Kyles said. “We will need people to come out and help clean, and those who will donate time and supplies. We need people to stay plugged in. “There is something we say at the CHURCH: ‘I was made for this,’” Kyles added. “We were made to make a difference in our cities and communities. We were made to help. I look around, and you know, I’ve never seen anything like it — people coming together to do whatever it takes with no other agenda aside from helping people. What an amazing thing to witness.” Call the donation hotline at 832449-2485 to help with the Brazos River Flood Recovery effort.

Relief work is no stranger to White, who participated in relief work during Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, but she said she has noticed a key difference with Brazos River flood tragedy. “With Hurricane Katrina, people were looking for a place to land. With this flood, you have families deeply rooted. People wanted to be in their city because they love it, and they have family here. Many families stayed together, even if on the second floor of their flooded home. We met a guy who had been sleeping in the woods. Local hotel rooms were full. I’ve never seen anything like it.” “The work is far, far from over,” Kyles said, adding the Brazos River Flood Recovery has no plans of disappearing. “The work is just beginning. This is going to be a long process and it’s going to take years.” In June alone, more than 4,500

makes our state the best place on earth to live and raise a family.” Local officials shared Olson’s praise of an exceptional example of a community coming together. “This group did such an amazing job of coming in and pulling together all of the different organizations and resources needed to help people recover,” said Richmond Mayor Evalyn W. Moore. “They came in immediately and stepped up to help people all over the county, and when those affected couldn’t come to Terry High School, relief came to them. The recovery team went throughout the county to provide much needed supplies including AccessHealth’s mobile unit providing vital health care. I couldn’t be more proud and thankful for the many organizations involved in this relief effort.”

FEMA Flood Recovery

Do’s and Don’ts

Do: • Do file a claim with your insurance company. • Do register for FEMA disaster assistance. Survivors can register online at disasterassistance.gov or by calling toll-free 800-621-3362 or TTY 800-4627585. Those who use 711 or VRS may call 800-621-3362. • Do know that FEMA grants may help pay for a temporary place to stay, make essential repairs or replace certain damaged contents. • Do inspect for structural damage before entering their home. • Do report flood damage to local officials. • Do throw away wet contents such as bedding, carpeting and furniture. These items may be a health hazard due to mold. • Do take photographs of flood damage. The insurance company may want to see these. • Do keep recovery-related receipts. FEMA or the insurance company may want to see these. • Do return a completed application for a low-interest disaster loan if a FEMA registrant has been referred to the U.S. Small Business Administration. Returning the application is necessary for FEMA to consider them for grants. • Do remember that FEMA grants do not need to be repaid, are not taxed and do not affect other government benefits.

Don’t: • Don’t submit more than one registration per household. • Don’t wait for visits from FEMA or insurance adjusters before cleaning up flood damage and starting repairs. • Don’t wait for an insurance settlement to register. • Don’t worry that federal disaster assistance is taking money away from someone else. FEMA provides assistance to all eligible applicants. • Don’t assume only homeowners can apply for help. Renters may qualify for assistance too.

Gingerbread: Quality Early Education in Fort Bend County

Where Children Learn and Grow

B

k To c a

l o o h Sc

As summer begins to wind down, it is time turn our attention to a new school year. This past year, the Gingerbread Family of Learning Centers celebrated the two year anniversary of the Gingerbread Kids’ Academy in Richmond and the beginning of the 35th anniversary of The Gingerbread House Learning Center in Rosenberg. The Gingerbread Kids’ Academy and Gingerbread House Learning Center have developed an environment where children can learn and grow. The programs are designed for children ages eight weeks to 12 years and offer a variety of activities throughout the year. Research has shown that in order for a child to be successful in school and life, they must begin with a strong foundation in learning. Gingerbread has designed a curriculum that includes an emphasis on reading, writing, science, math, discovery and exploration, as well as social skills development. The infant and toddler programs focus on the development of both gross and fine motor skills along with basic language development. The three to five-year-old Pre-School and Pre-K programs focus on academics, peer relationships and preparation for entry into kindergarten and elementary school. The Gingerbread after-school programs, located onsite at Frost, Hutchison, Hubenak and Arredondo Elementary, as well as onsite at the Gingerbread Kids’ Academy and Gingerbread House, offer homework assistance, arts, crafts, games and sports. Beginning January 2017, Gingerbread will also offer an after-school program at the new Bentley Elementary on FM 359. A new year means new beginnings. The Gingerbread Family invites you to come by for a visit. Both locations are now accepting enrollments for the 2016-2017 school year. St. John’s Methodist School for Little Children Since opening its doors in January 1973, St. John’s Methodist School for Little Children has served the Richmond community, always striving to provide children with quality academic instruction in a very accepting, loving, Christian environment. When a group of St. John’s United Methodist parents decided to form a preschool, they had no idea that there would be years when over 100 children would attend, and thousands of children would be served over the next 40 years. Many families are now sending their second generation to the preschool. “Our two youngest daughters have loved every day they have spent at St. John’s. The staff does so much to create simple, memorable moments for all the children. They allow children to be children and encourage them to grow in faith and friendship,” said Kelly Black, a mom who has had a child at St. John’s since 2012. Another mother commented that St. John’s is a place where children feel loved, not just watched. Wanda Burkett, school director, tells parents, “We want the children to leave school each day thinking that school is a good place to be and hoping to come back very soon.” It is their intent that the St. John’s School program helps prepare children for success in school and in life. There are still openings available for the fall. Come by to visit the school at 400 Jackson Street in Richmond. Application forms and more information are available in the school office and at www.stjohnslittleschool.org.

High School HOT SHOT

By Joan Frances

Meet Olufemi “Favor” Alabi

G

eorge Bush High School in Fort Bend Independent School District prepares all students to be responsible and successful individuals. With highly qualified teachers and administration, students graduate with a wellrounded curriculum in academics, sports and extracurricular activities. One senior who has achieved success in all aspects of his high school career is Olufemi “Favor” Alabi. Favor is in the top three percent of his senior class and has taken Advanced Placement classes every year. He is a member of the National Honor Society and the National English Honor Society, as well as Advancement Via Student Determination (AVID) and Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA). Favor was also a member of Technical Student Association (TSA) and the National Spanish Honor Society. He has received awards for academic excellence, perfect attendance for the past three years and Honor Roll status. Favor’s favorite teacher is Phillip Buchanan, his math teacher. “Mr. Buchanan was an angel in disguise, because he came to my rescue. I was having a difficult time in math, my favorite subject, and when Mr. Buchanan came to teach my class, he taught in such a way that was far better than anyone before him, and I began to like math again.” In addition to his academic successes, Favor was a member of the basketball team as a freshman and the track team as a junior. He com-

F a vo r peted in the 400, 200 and 800 meter runs, as well as the 400, 200 and 100 meter x 4 relay. Favor is a motivated leader who supports his teammates. “Being a leader on the track team means that you get to improve the mental strength of your teammates. Most of the time, people think of track as a physical sport, but it is a mental one. Being there just to push and motivate your teammates not to give up helps them in every aspect of their life, because it teaches them to always give their best no matter what.” When asked what he treasures most about his high school involvement, Favor said, “The experience. You learn so much throughout the course of your high school career that not only shapes your personality and who you’ll become in the future, but it also shapes the environment you will place yourself in.”

Favor stays busy donating his time to community service. On May 27th, Favor visited Mission Bend Elementary with the National Honor Society to volunteer at the school’s field day. Favor contributed 75 additional hours of community service as a member of AVID. On May 10th, he helped tutor eighth grade students at Davy Crockett Middle School to prepare them for the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) tests. Within AVID, there is another club called Teens Against Tobacco Use (TATU), and Favor spoke about the dangers of smoking with other TATU members at several elementary schools throughout the year. Favor plans to attend The University of Texas at Austin and double major in computer engineering and electrical engineering. Congratulations on your drive and commitment Favor, and good luck as you benefit society in the future.

“You learn so much throughout the course of your high school career that not only shapes your personality and who you’ll become in the future, but it also shapes the environment you will place yourself in.” – Favor Alabi 18

Sugar Land Face and Body Plastic Surgery Offers Medical Spa with Breakthrough Procedures When you look in the mirror, do you like what you see? Dr. Eric Humble believes “rejuvenation is about making your internal vision a reality so you can enjoy your life with joy and confidence!” Offering an in-house certified surgical center, as well as a cutting edge medical spa, Sugar Land Face and Body Plastic Surgery is a single destination with a full range of solutions, including Botox and filler injections, facial rejuvenation, body contouring and surgical procedures. Dr. Humble is a double board certified plastic surgeon and envisions Sugar Land Face and Body becoming the pre-eminent facility in the Sugar Land and the Greater Houston area for personal transformation through the medical arts of plastic surgery and skin correction techniques. Dr. Humble’s med spa offers an exclusive and breakthrough procedure called Cellfina, the only FDA approved, minimally invasive procedure clinically proven to improve the appearance of cellulite for at least two years. Performed by Dr. Humble in the office, Cellfina combines a proven approach with innovative, proprietary technology to treat the primary structural cause of cellulite – the connective bands woven throughout fat in the thighs and buttocks. These tight bands pull down the surface of the skin, creating the puckering seen on the surface of the skin. Similar to a rubber band under tension, once released, the treated skin bounces back to smooth itself out in as little as three days. Your Child’s First Dental Visit New parents often ask, “When should my child first see a dentist?” The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and the American Academy of Pediatrics both agree that children should visit a pediatric dentist by age one. National studies have shown that preschool-aged children are getting more cavities. More than one in four children in the United States has had at least one cavity by the age of four, and many children get cavities as early as age two. Comprehensive initial exams for children under the age of two are always complimentary at the office of Larry Caldwell, DDS Dentistry For Children. At the initial one year visit, Dr. Caldwell and his staff will discuss how to care for an infant’s or toddler’s mouth; oral habits, including finger and thumb sucking; how to handle dental emergencies and accidents that could damage the face and teeth; bottle feeding and nursing as it relates to decay; teething and eruption of teeth and the link between diet and oral health. Dr. Caldwell recommends the first cleaning and X-rays between the age of two and a half and three years. When preparing a child for his first visit, use fun and positive words. Dr. Caldwell and his staff have expertise in handling the special needs and circumstances of all children. A positive dental experience is accomplished through efficient teamwork and a gentle patient approach. It is Dr. Caldwell’s goal to not only meet parents’ expectations of their children’s dental experience, but surpass it. Medical Focus Suffer No More

Millions of women suffer from extremely heavy periods. Every month, they fear that they will have an embarrassing incident, be unable to leave the house due to the need for frequent trips to the bathroom and possibly even miss work. These women may never seek treatment, because they think it is “natural” and part of normal life. This condition, also known as menorrhagia, is actually a medical condition and has several treatment options. One basic treatment option is the use of birth control pills. Although most people associate birth control pills only with preventing pregnancy, they are used for a variety of medical conditions, including heavy periods. Another option is an intrauterine device (IUD), which can make menstrual periods extremely light. This small device can be placed during a simple office visit. For women who are completely done with childbearing, a popular solution is endometrial ablation. This is a minimally invasive procedure that neutralizes the inner lining of the uterus. This simple procedure can be performed in the office, surgery center or operating room. Recovery is quick, and most people are able to return to work within a few days. A final treatment option for those women who are done having children is a hysterectomy, a procedure to remove the uterus. This is the only guaranteed way to completely stop menstrual periods. This procedure can be performed using advanced, minimally invasive techniques and will completely cure heavy menstrual periods. For more information or to schedule an appointment, call UT Physicians Women’s Center Sugar Land at 713-486-1250 or visit UTPhysicians.com.

Memorial Hermann Sugar Land Expansion Nears Completion Memorial Hermann Sugar Land Hospital recently completed Phase I of a $93 million campus expansion and renovation project. The first floor of the new six-story patient tower opened to the public May 23rd. The remaining five floors of the 155,000 square-foot patient tower are scheduled to open in early September. The first floor offers expanded conference room space, a café and a new preadmission testing department. Once finished, the patient tower will add 90 beds to the existing 87-bed hospital, as well as an expanded nursery, neonatal intensive-care unit and an adult intermediate care unit. Intermediate care beds are for patients who do not need the level of care provided by the intensive care unit but require close supervision. In April, the Memorial Hermann IRONMAN Sports Medicine Institute opened on the Memorial Hermann Sugar Land campus. The Institute provides Sugar Land and the surrounding communities access to a dynamic array of sports medicine specialists and comprehensive testing and training for competitive and recreational athletes of all ages. Growth isn’t just confined to the Memorial Hermann Sugar Land campus. This past year, the Memorial Hermann Convenient Care Center in Sienna Plantation and Memorial Hermann Urgent Care Telfair opened to provide the community with greater access to convenient, affordable, high-quality health care. Memorial Hermann Sugar Land, a finalist for the 2015 Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award, is located at 17500 West Grand Parkway South in Sugar Land. Childrens Dentistry of Texas Childrens Dentistry of Texas specializes in treating children from infancy through the teenage years, including children with special health care needs. The dentistry’s top priority is caring for children’s dental health through education, prevention, positive encouragement and quality treatment. The specially trained, kid-friendly team listens to questions and concerns about oral health and gives parents the necessary information to make an informed decision. The team’s positive approach creates a fun, educational experience for each child’s visit, and they encourage parents to accompany their child during treatment, as well as participate during the visit. What causes bad breath? Many factors can contribute. Known causes include poor oral hygiene, dry mouth, mouth breathing, mouth infections, foreign objects, certain foods, medication and illness or conditions. Childrens Dentistry of Texas recommends brushing teeth two to three times a day and floss daily. Don’t forget to brush the tongue, as it can contain bacteria that contributes to bad breath. In addition, if a child’s mouth produces less saliva than normal, xerostomia may occur, contributing to bad breath. When a child breathes through their mouth, it prevents saliva from washing away bacteria, which can also lead to bad breath. Cavities, plaque buildup or mouth sores can also be factors of bad breath. Additionally, if a baby or toddler places a foreign object – small toys or food particles – in their nose, it can cause bad breath. Foods with strong odors like garlic, onions or specific spices can cause bad breath, as well as certain medications. Allergies, sinus infection, tonsillitis or another illness can cause bad breath. Visit www.ChildrensDentistryofTexas. com or call 281-238-GRIN for more information.

Lemke Orthodontics: Creating Healthy, Beautiful Smiles A great, beautiful smile is the best way to make a good first impression, and it’s never too late to get the smile of your dreams! Dr. Katia Lemke said, “My passion for aesthetic dental solutions led to me to earn my specialty degree in orthodontics with research in ceramic braces. I am therefore one of the few providers of Incognito braces in Houston and its vicinity. “Nothing improves your appearance, attitude and confidence like a great smile, and I want to make it easier for you to get a beautiful transformation. We treat patients with patience, kindness and understanding. Children love the welcoming atmosphere and the friendly and gentle touch of this orthodontist and her staff. We offer flexible hours for school kids and working adults. I also offer a range of aesthetic solutions like clear braces, Invisalign and Incognito. “Age seven is the best time to evaluate a child. A thorough examination will show existing or potential problems, such as cross bites, crowding and other problems. It’s always good to know in advance. I love getting to know my patients and designing the best path to straightening teeth, closing spaces and achieving their great smile. As a specialist, we’ve got a range of solutions for straighter, healthier smiles – and happier kids.” Greet your future with a beautiful smile. Dr. Lemke stated, “I know adults who prefer nearly invisible ceramic braces and kids who like brackets shaped like stars or footballs. Your smile should express your personality!” For more information on Lemke Orthodontics, visit www. lemkeortho.com.

Why Schedule Well-Child Checks? A child’s yearly check up is important. Even healthy children need regular preventative services, such as vision and hearing screens. A yearly checkup is a good opportunity to reassess a child’s growth, development and risk for various conditions. Well-child visits can help find and treat health problems before they become serious. They also allow parents and children to ask questions about the child’s health and establish a relationship with a primary care physician. A well-child visit will encourage children to stay healthy and make healthy choices. Just for Kids Pediatrics is committed to putting children first, working together with patients and families to provide exceptional medical care for kids in the Katy area. They pride themselves on providing compassionate, comprehensive services to children from birth through adolescence. From routine checkups to immunizations, Just for Kids Pediatrics is equipped to handle all of a child’s health needs. When parents choose Just for Kids Pediatrics for their child’s primary medical care, they can feel confident they are working with professionals who are qualified, experienced and caring. They do this by equipping parents with the support and resources needed to make the most educated decisions about their child’s health. Parents will feel confident in the Just for Kids Pediatrics team’s ability to meet and exceed all of their expectations. Just for Kids Pediatrics is located at 418 Park Grove in Katy. A LITTLE PIECE OF HISTORY By Joan Frances Images from American Alligator of the Southern United States.

Alligators An adult American alligator.

T

he year 2016 is proving to be historical for the Fort Bend County community. For the first time since 1957, the Brazos River crested and overflowed to a record level, flooding areas of Richmond and Rosenberg. This natural disaster made national news for weeks. Not only has this been devastating for homeowners, but animals have suffered as well. Ranch horses, sheep and cows have struggled to find higher ground. Wild, native creatures have been forced to relocate to the most unlikely places, making it dangerous for residents to walk or swim in rising waters. One intimidating animal, a common sight in overflowing Fort Bend rivers that is protected by the Endangered Species Act of 1973, is the alligator.

An adult American alligator skull.

Known as a living fossil, the alligator has existed for over 200 million years and is virtually unchanged in physical form. Alligators live in marshes, rivers, swamps and lakes anywhere west to California, south to Texas and north to Arkansas. There are about 23 species of the extant crocodilian ranging in size from five to 20 feet long and from 500 to 1,000 pounds. The crea-

in Fort Bend tures have a life span ranging from 35 to 50 years. The American alligator, or Alligator mississippiensis, is semi-aquatic, has a dark, olive brown to black body and a broad, round snout with rows of raised scales along the back and tail. Its front feet have five toes, while its rear feet have four webbed toes. American alligators are carnivorous with a diet consisting of fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals and are known to be scavengers. An agile swimmer, the alligator often swims with only its eyes and nostrils exposed. It is active both day and night and can be seen floating on the surface of the water or basking on the shoreline. Females produce 20 to 50 eggs with an average incubation period of 65 days. Baby alligators stay with their mother for up to three years. Often mistaken for a large tree branch floating on the water, alligators are quick to move, and according to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, they can run up to 35 miles per hour on land but only in short bursts. Joggers, bikers and walkers along the bayou and at Brazos State Park are warned to watch out for alligators. Visitors like to observe them from the safety of boardwalks, bridges and trails. At Brazos State Park, it is estimated that around 250 alligators over six feet long reside in the 1,000 acres of water. They have lived in the Brazos Bend area for the past 65 million years. Alligators should never be fed by park administrators or

AUGUST 2016 l TO ADVERTISE: 281.690.4242 or www.absolutelybrazos.com

visitors, because doing so teaches them to be unafraid of humans. Because alligators are cold blooded, they use food mainly for growth, repair and reproduction. They could probably go for a year or so without eating if necessary. During the winter, they may not eat at all. Depending on their activity level and the water temperature, they can stay underwater from one to 24 hours.

A juvenile American alligator hiding among duckweed.

The American alligator usually avoids humans, but as the population increases in Fort Bend County, there have been documented encounters with these massive animals. During flooding, they are capable of traveling far distances with the flow of the current, showing up in a swimming pool or backyard, but alligator attacks are rare. Alligators are an important component of Fort Bend’s natural history and have an integral function in many wetland ecosystems. Thanks to the Texas law that provides complete protection for the alligator, this reptile will continue to be a part of our past and future history.
