EXCLAMATION POINTS! THE INSIDE SCOOP STRAIGHT FROM THE TOP Publisher, PATTI PARISH-KAMINSKI
Vol. 3 No. 1 | December 2014
“We elves try to stick to the four main food groups: candy, candy canes, candy corns and syrup.” – Buddy For years, when someone called the Kaminski’s during the holiday season, Kassidi and Kolton would answer the phone with the following greeting: “Buddy the elf! What’s your favorite color?” Yes, Elf is our all-time favorite holiday movie. We’ve seen it multiple times in multiple venues from Texas to Colorado during the holidays. It’s become one of our favorite family traditions. The holidays are all about traditions, and in this issue, we talk with State Representative Lois W. Kolkhorst. The Kolkhorst family shares their values and holiday traditions with us, along with some beautiful family photos. Representative Kolkhorst is running for senator for District 18 where she would represent an even larger constituency in Texas, so get to know her, her family and what she stands for starting on page 6. Speaking of holiday traditions, the cities of Richmond and Rosenberg are hosting a series of both family-friendly and adult events to celebrate the season. We’ll be there on December 4th as a sponsor of Shop & Swirl in Historic Downtown Rosenberg. Hope to see you there! Another tradition of ours at absolutely! focus media is our annual GEMS event. This year, we benefitted Texana Center with an amazing evening. We had dinner, showcased three amazing community leaders – Bob, Neil and Jim – played in the chips for charity casino, and had a blast! Check out pictures on page 22, and look for the details in next month’s issue about how much money was raised for Texana Center. It really is the most wonderful time of the year. This year, I have more than usual to be thankful for. My family, friends, colleagues and team here at absolutely! focus media are truly amazing individuals, and I am blessed because of them. From all of us here to you and yours, we wish you a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! We will see you in 2015!

Lois W.
Kolkhorst
S
tate Representative Lois W. Kolkhorst is more than a successful political leader famous for going after the issues that matter and the causes that change lives. She is first a wife and a mother, who takes those roles just a seriously as the one that put her in the political arena. Simply put, Kolkhorst’s devotion to faith, family and district is what makes this representative so relatable and beloved by her constituents. Known for her straightforward talk and common-sense solutions, Kolkhorst is famous for fighting the tough fights and refusing to back down on the tough issues. With strong Texas roots that run five generations deep back to the Texas War of Independence, Kolkhorst believes she is the right person to serve our area in Texas Senate District 18. A graduate of Texas Christian University, her friends describe her as a committed wife, great mom and proud Christian conservative. Kolkhorst has worked closely with our longtime State Senator Glenn Hegar for years. She was elected to the Texas House
H of Representatives in 2001 to serve House District 13, which includes Austin, Burleson, Colorado, Fayette, Grimes, Lavaca and Washington counties. As the Senator for District 18, Kolkhorst would represent a larger area from Katy to Gonzales down to Aransas County and north to Brenham. In her tenure as a lawmaker, she has been known for her passionate arguments against government overreach. Kolkhorst has made her mark in Texas politics with several accomplishments. Last year she led the state’s effort to reject President Obama’s personal push to massively expand Medicaid in Texas, one of his key planks of implementing the Affordable Care Act in Texas. A few years ago, she wrote and passed one of the toughest immigration bills in Texas Legislature, which punishes businesses that knowingly hire illegal immigrants. As a budget writer, she demanded and delivered $100 million for state troopers to protect our border back in 2007, long before the current immigration crisis. She also found time to pass a bill to clarify that Texas law cannot be modified by international governments like the United Nations (UN), which was in response to the Mexican government’s attempt to use the UN to overrule the Texas death penalty law. Her qualifications and experience are impressive and extensive, but so much of what makes Kolkhorst an effective politician really can’t be found in a dry political biography. It’s found in her home.

Lois Kolkhorst is a faithful, family woman. At the center of her world is God, her husband, Jim, and their children, Lois Kate, 15, and Jake, 12. Lois Kate attends Brenham High School, while her brother attends Brenham Middle School,

and both are involved in a plethora of activities. Lois Kate balances cheerleading, Anchor Club, French Club, Drama Club, track, Heritage Bell, Cubs Care Club, Young Life and church youth group, and Jake juggles baseball, basketball, soccer and football. And Mom is in between all of it, making sure she doesn’t miss a thing. “I usually arrange my schedule to align with whatever my kids may be doing,” Kolkhorst shared. “I’ve tried to set my priorities as God, family and then everything else. This race for the Texas Senate has been exciting because we’re campaigning basically from Sugar Land to Corpus Christi. The campaign trail can be busy, but yet I’ve still been able to attend almost all of my kids’ games and activities.” And her kids know just how special that is. “My mom does a good job because even if she has to go somewhere, she will make it home to play football with me or go to my games,” said Jake. “My mom has made it a point during her campaign to involve my friends and me, which has been fun,” said Lois Kate, adding that her mom has made a lifelong impression on her teenage friends. “She always tries to find time to watch my cheerleading,” she added. “I don’t know how she does it. It’s truly amazing.” Kolkhorst said she isn’t trying to be superwoman; she’s just a wife and mother with her priorities in line. “I’ve been known to leave the House floor, change into our team colors and drive straight
to a game to watch Jake or Lois Kate,” she said. “You really have to be cognizant of your schedule and find a balance. I’ve tried to give the most to my Lord, my children and my husband.” These are qualities not only needed to be a lawmaker, but also to be a parent who wants to set a prime example for her kids. Kolkhorst has tried to teach her children to be, as she puts it, “givers who want to make the world a better place and serve others in whatever way they can.” “I push my kids to be leaders. I tell them, ‘Be a leader today and have God in your heart.’ I think we’re all here to serve a purpose higher than ourselves,” Kolkhorst said. “My family has made tremendous sacrifices to allow me to be a public servant. In some small way, I hope our family has been able to do some good in our state and our country.” While she balances her family life and public life, Kolkhorst said she’s no different than any other working mom. “I think every working mom has to juggle those responsibilities,” she said. “We stay up at all hours to make sure some school project is taken care of and that our kids are ready for the next morning. I am no different from any other mother. I respect females for our ability to multitask and to do more no matter what comes our way.” Kolkhorst said she and Jim – who started dating at 15 years-old and recently celebrated dating 34 years – also make time for family outings, whether that’s fly-fishing in Colorado, deer hunting or dove hunting. “We also have traditions like Friday night movie night, when it’s not football season, where we
pile up in the bed together and all watch a movie. We watch a lot of sports on TV together.” Whenever the Kolkhorsts have a chance to be with family, they jump in headfirst and prepare for a good time. “During Thanksgiving, our entire family gets together, which is about 30 to 35 people. We spend the night in our barndomenium for a couple of nights. We have so much fun watching movies, eating and spending quality time together,” Lois Kate said of the family’s holiday traditions. “Every year around Christmas, we usually spend some quality shopping time in Fort Bend County.”
Successful Businesswoman Aside from being a mom, wife and politico, Kolkhorst is a savvy businesswoman who stands alongside her husband Jim. For most of their adult lives, the two have been growing Kolkhorst Petroleum, a company that started with less than 25 employees and blossomed into a series of corporations that employs nearly 400 people today. “My dad started Kolkhorst Petroleum,” Jim explained. “We’ve been in business for over 50 years as a company and started to really expand around 1997. In 2004, we began the Rattler’s Convenience Store chain, and in 2012, we became Burger King franchisees. We had about 25 employees when Lois and I took the helm, and now, we have close to 400.” Jim immersed himself into the company with his wife by his side. “I was hired as the local chamber of commerce

president and president of the economic development foundation when Jimmy took over the company,” Kolkhorst said. “I’d help him on the side. He’s really the mastermind. I’m just a spark plug to his engine. He’s a great partner in life, and it helps that he is my best friend and that he is a great businessman. Sometimes I feel like I’m the luckiest person in the world.” The company’s success is attributed to a variety of factors, Kolkhorst said. “We have great employees who are dedicated to our mission of quality service. They are the main reason we continue to grow. In the business world, you have to take risks to grow and need the workforce to back up that risk.” “Our life together has been quite an adventure. Lois is a great woman. She will be an incredible State Senator,” Jim said. “She’s my wife and my best friend. We’ve been together since 1980, so we know each other really, really well. It’s been a great ride, and we’re still going strong.”
The Heart of a Leader With 14 years of experience in the Texas House of Representatives, Kolkhorst has served on multiple committees over the years, which many feel qualifies her to be the best person to become the State Senator of the 18th District of Texas. “I believe that experience matters. I’m proven, I’m extremely conservative and I’m a Texan. The experience of being a mother, wife and small business owner certainly contribute as well. I’m ready to do the job as a senator just like any working mom is ready to report to their job.” Experience aside, Kolkhorst said she also has the heart to lead the district. If elected, Kolkhorst said her constituents can rest assured that she will work on their behalf and take their concerns to the legislature. “I always say that we must know the heart of our leaders,” she said. “I really work hard at being a leader who serves the people every day. I’m not perfect, but I give 110 percent every day. I know I can do this job. I’m a fifth-generation Texan. I love Texas. I love what Texas has been and what Texas can be.”
8
Budget and the Economy:
Sanctity of Life:
Kolkhorst wants to put an end to budget diversions and keep a lid on spending by starting each session with a “zerobased budget” that accounts for every single taxpayer dollar. She has helped secure more than $100 million extra dollars for border security, and she fought to lower state spending and return any surplus dollars to the taxpayers who a paid them. To provide transparency on how tax dollars are spent, Kolkhorst helped write a bill to open the books on state spending, making sure state expenditures are posted online for the public.
With a fundamental respect for human life, from conception until natural death, Kolkhorst has worked against funding Planned Parenthood, and she voted to put an end to late-term abortion in Texas. She sponsored legislation that guided Texas away from the practice of embryonic stem cell research, instead enabling an adult stem cell research program.
Education: Kolkhorst has worked for more than a decade against high-cost bureaucracy that drives up taxes and to make sure more of education funding reaches the classroom, and as a parent, she fought against the reliance on standardized testing. “Education is truly our future,” Kolkhorst said. “What we teach our children today begins to shape and mold their minds. I’m a big advocate of teaching history. I am not a supporter of Common Core. I believe that Texas is smart enough to come up with its own curriculum and to teach it to its children.”
Immigration and Border Security: Kolkhorst demands that Texas secures its border and provide our state forces with the money, manpower and technology to fight against illegal immigration. Already, she’s passed one of the toughest immigration bills in Texas that punishes business that knowingly hire illegal immigrants and authored one of the first voter ID requirements in Texas. “We must continue to invest money, because the federal government is not going to do it,” Kolkhorst said. “We will get even more aggressive about protecting our border.”
Second Amendment: Kolkhorst is a firm believer that the right to keep and bear arm exists to protect all other rights. She said as senator she will fight to protect gun rights. She has streamlined the process Texans go through to earn their Concealed Handgun License, and she has worked for years with the Caesar Kleberg Wildlife Research Institute at Texas A&M University-Kingsville, some of the leading wildlife researchers in Texas.
Property Rights: Kolkhorst has been fighting to see that land owners don’t have their property taken by unelected government appointees. Considered a defender of private property rights, she wrote and passed a bill to eliminate the unfair “jury of view” method of eminent domain in Texas.
The Affordable Care Act: “As the current chair of the Public Health Committee in the Texas House, I’ve been battling the dangers of the Affordable Care Act and the impact that it is having on our citizens,” Kolkhorst said. “I’ve also worked on privacy rights for electronic healthcare records to make sure they cannot be bartered or sold.” Her landmark medical privacy bill, House Bill 300 in 2011, is known as the toughest law on electronic health records in the nation. hristmas time is here again. Boxes of decorations are being unpacked, lights are being untangled and trees are being put together or cut down. Presents are being sought out and wrapping paper bought up in droves. In the midst of this busy season, people attempt to pause and consider the gift God gives in the shape of a baby born in a manger. It is a gift that is said to be a “joy to the world.” It is a gift that is said to have changed the world. It is a gift that is said to bring people into relationship with God and neighbor. This December, Faith United Methodist Church (UMC) is going to explore this gift. Can this gift still affect lives today? Does it bring joy? Can it truly change the world? Will it bring people into relationship with God? Come and see. Come and see the joy. Come and see the change that takes place. Come and see how God is showing up in neighborhoods. Come and see the answers that the manger gives to hard questions. The manger invites people into relationship with Christ. Join Faith UMC this holiday season as they explore the claims of this true gift. Come and see. Sunday worship at Faith UMC includes The Table in the chapel with communion at 8:45 am, a traditional service and Bible study at 9:30 am and a contemporary service … Connecting Faith and Life and children’s worship at 10:50 am. absolutely! absolutely! AUTO REVIEW AUTO REVIEW By Steve Kursar
2015 CADILLAC ESCALADE T
he 2015 Cadillac Escalade is the undisputed top-of-the-line stretch SUV in the market. There are other SUVs that are as long and others that are as luxurious. But the Cadillac stands alone as the only one that combines both qualities. This is the king – or queen – of the carpool lane, soccer practice and Girl Scout adventure. Get one, and they will stare, ask you questions about it and generally envy you. When the SUV swept into the American conscious way back in the 1990s, automakers realized they had a winner on their hands and began to introduce big SUVs that were aspirational and catered to the luxury buyer. The biggest and most luxurious came out in 1999 when Cadillac introduced the Escalade. About four years later, they
24
brought out the ESV, which was built on the Chevrolet Suburban. The biggest luxury SUV was born. The 2015 Cadillac Escalade ESV continues its reign as top super-large luxury SUV with a new body style, a new interior and an all-new engine. The exterior is unmistakably Cadillac with a huge chrome grill and outsized Cadillac badges just in case your neighbors lost their glasses. With standard LED headlights and the optional 22 inch wheels, the new Escalade ESV is a definite presence on the road. The interior boasts buttery leather, real wood, suede accents and all of the technology you should expect in a new Cadillac. The CUE infotainment system comes standard and features voice recognition software and touch controls that mirror those found on your smartphone and tablet. The third row folds flat at the push of a button, and there’s enough cargo space behind the third row to easily accommodate every piece of equipment that the softball team needs to reach the playoffs.
DECEMBER 2014 l TO ADVERTISE: 281.690.4242 or www.absolutelybrazos.com
With a starting MSRP of $75,690, the new Cadillac Escalade ESV is offered with only one engine choice, the equally new 420 hp, 6.2 liter V-8 engine with cylinder deactivation that seamlessly switches from V8 to V4 when you reach cruising altitude and back to V8 when you need to pass that eighteen wheeler. Fuel economy is awfully respectable considering the vehicle’s size and weight with 15 mpg in the city and 21 mpg on the highway. With a price tag that can take you close to $100,000 if you choose all of the bells and whistles, the new Cadillac Escalade ESV remains firmly rooted as the top luxury big SUV. Long live the king – or queen!

High School HOT SHOT
By Joan Frances
Meet Ashlynn Kolmansberger
B.F.
Terry High School is home to approximately 1,688 students. With such a diversified curriculum and highly qualified teachers, students spend four years preparing to take the next step in life. One senior who has excelled in academics and sports and is a leader in her class is Ashlynn Kolmansberger. Ashlynn took an interest in playing volleyball in seventh grade and has been a member of the team all four years of high school. As a freshman and sophomore, she started with the junior varsity team as a middle blocker. She has been a member of the varsity team as a junior and senior. As a team player, Ashlynn is devoted and focuses on the sport to play the best she can for the team. She has developed strong friendships with her team, and they spend time together outside of the volleyball court. Ashlynn is very generous with her time during and after school days. One activity that has made the greatest impact on her is Peer Assistance Leadership Skills (PALS). “When I discovered my PALee was bullied and humiliated daily, I was horrified, but we worked together to build her confidence, and soon, all of the bullying stopped! Another PALee of mine was battling a life-threatening disease, and I was able to comfort her and give her strength in her darkest moments. Mentoring these lovely young ladies
Ashlynn has impacted me as much as it has impacted them, and I am beyond grateful for this wonderful experience.” Ashlynn leads her peers and devotes her time as vice president of National Honor Society, vice president of PALS, student council member and leader of Students with a Testimony (S.W.A.T.). She also volunteers for Helping Hands, Lunches of Love, Habitat for Humanity and Texana. As a senior, Ashlynn is diligent, honest, driven to succeed and a very positive person. She is respectful of her teachers. Melanie Applebum, Ashlynn’s Human Growth and Development teacher, is her favorite instructor because she cares about her students and helps them succeed. Ashlynn has a strong work ethic that has motivated her to do the best she can in any situation. Her self-discipline ensures that she meets deadlines and gains a sense of satisfaction to achieve success. Ashlynn enjoys diversity and is not afraid to try new things at school and at home. Her strong commitment to her religion is admirable. The value she feels is most important is faith. “During my darkest moments, having faith helped
me grow as a person, persevere and to remain optimistic.” As a sophomore, Ashlynn was selected to represent Terry High School as the Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership Ambassador. She attended a seminar that taught students how to give back to the community and how to be a notable leader on campus. This honor impacted her to continue to grow as a leader, to empathize with her peers and to assist them in any way she could. Ashlynn was also awarded Geometry and Speech Student of the Year. She would like to go to college at either Shriner University in Kerrville or Texas A&M University in Corpus Christi. Ashlynn is interested in an education career and is currently leaning toward teaching high school students. She also hopes to gain experience in the ministry field, as well as business.
Ashlynn’s dream is to open her very own school with a focus on education, ministry and future preparation, instilling confidence and a sense of purpose into her students. With so much generosity to offer, Ashlynn is posed to make a huge impact in her world.
“During my darkest moments, having faith helped me grow as a person, persevere and to remain optimistic.” - Ashlynn Kolmansberger 26

Fort Bend Regional Council on Substance Abuse, Inc. Hosts Sixth Annual Helen Cordes Award Dinner Fort Bend Regional Council on Substance Abuse, Inc. presents the Sixth Annual Helen Cordes Award Dinner featuring intervention specialists Debbie and Brandon Knauss on February 26th, 2015 at Safari Texas Ranch. Brandon and Debbie have been featured on the Dr. Phil Show, The Doctors and the TLC primetime special, Cracking Addiction! In America, nearly every family is directly or indirectly affected by the disease of addiction and/or mental illness. Brandon and Debbie have a distinctive approach to the intervention process. This is precisely why Dr. Phil and The Doctors television programs selected them to illustrate what an important and valuable tool intervention is in combating addiction. Debbie and Brandon conduct interventions as a mother and son team. Brandon is a former addict, and his mother lived through years of his disease. Debbie is a licensed Registered Nurse (RN) and Chemical Dependency Counselor (LCDC). Their unique bond allows them to offer what few other intervention specialists can: intimate, direct knowledge of what the family is experiencing. The award dinner is held in honor of an individual who has given their time, experience and expertise to Fort Bend Regional Council. The Honoree for 2015 is Judge Susan Lowery, who has been an outspoken advocate on substance abuse issues. The Helen Cordes Award was founded to honor her generous community spirit. She served on the Fort Bend Regional Council’s Board of Directors from 1991 to 1997 and was President from 1992 to 1995. For more event information, contact Mandi Bronsell at 281-207-2409 or mbronsell@fortbendcouncil.org.

he intense demands of schoolwork may cause parents to hesitate when it comes to after school time. Although parents don’t want to overload their child’s schedule, the academic, social and physical benefits of extracurricular programs are hard to ignore. The Afterschool Alliance reports that kids who participate in after school programs have better school attendance, higher grades and loftier aspirations about graduation and college attendance. Kids also develop social and leadership skills in after school programs. These guidelines will help you sort the best from the rest. Content. Help kids find activities that reflect who they are and what they want to learn instead of imposing your preferences on them. Kids flourish when they’re deeply engaged. Quality. “Discipline-based activities that allow kids to create a quality product over a period of time are best,” said Sara Hill, Ph.D., Senior Consultant for the National Institute on Out-of-School Time. Kids might learn math and science by building a boat or practice art and leadership by putting on a play. Staffing. Staff members should have legitimate skills and experience. Programs with strong community connections usually have the best resources, Hill said. Movement. After school sports encourage persistence, provide exercise and more. Exercise boosts mood, improves learning and memory and relieves stress. Leadership. Extracurricular activities, including sports and clubs, are ideal places for kids to explore and practice what it means to be a group leader, said Kuczmarski. Logistics. “After school activities can provide balance to a class schedule that is overly academic,” said Susan Kuczmarski, Ed. D. And remember that good programs don’t necessarily cost big bucks. After school activities can provide enrichment, adventure and variety. If you can’t find quality after school activities near you, contact your school district to advocate for programs you’d like to see. Source: www.metrofamilymagazine.com

Gingerbread: Quality Education in Fort Bend County The holidays are a time to celebrate families and turn our thoughts to the new year. This year, the Gingerbread Family of learning centers opened its newest location in Richmond, Texas. For over 33 years, The Gingerbread House Learning Center and the new Gingerbread Kids’ Academy have created an environment where children can learn and grow. The programs are designed for children ages 8 weeks to 12 years. Research has shown that in order for a child to be successful in school and in life, they must begin with a strong foundation in learning. Gingerbread has designed a curriculum that includes an emphasis on reading, writing, science, math, discovery and exploration, as well as social skills development. The infant and toddler programs focus on the development of both gross and fine motor skills along with basic language development. The 3 to 5 year-old Pre-School and PreK programs focus on academics, peer relationships and preparation for entry into Kindergarten and elementary school. The Gingerbread After-School programs, located onsite at Frost, Hutchison and Hubenak Elementary, as well as onsite at the Gingerbread Kids’ Academy, offer homework assistance, arts, crafts, games and sports. A new year means new beginnings. The Gingerbread Family invites you to come and visit before, during or after the holidays. Both locations are now accepting enrollments for the 2015 school year. Kn.I.L.E. Center: A“Boutique Style” Solution to Education Kn.I.L.E. Center offers two cornerstone programs. Kn.I.L.E. Prep Academy (KPA) is a 3rd through 12th grade private school that works with both sides of the bell curve, struggling students or those who want to get ahead. Education is not a “one size fits all” concept, so the school follows the child’s unique way of learning instead of the child following the school’s way of teaching. Kn.I.L.E. Prep Academy customizes students’ curriculums so they can work at their own pace and discover what their true learning potential really is. Kn.I.L.E. Center’s other cornerstone program is Kn.I.L.E. ECN, an after school coaching program. It’s been the experience that in most cases, repeating the material, like in traditional tutoring, is not the right solution for every child. In most cases, the reason for “the slide” is weak cognitive skills that do not allow a child to process or retain information properly. In these cases, very specific sets of exercises to strengthen these weak skills, combined with academic assistance, are the roadmap to a child’s educational success. Sometimes looking at alternative ways of learning can be scary as to what kind of results it might bring. However, Kn.I.L.E. Center has seen tremendous success with their customized and new approach to education and thus has been awarded Best Tutoring for two years in a row (2013 and 2014) and Best Private School (2014). Call 281-761-6610 today and see what a difference a customized education can make for your child! For more information, visit www.knilecenter.com.

A LITTLE PIECE OF HISTORY
Rosenberg Fire Department volunteers with one of the first fire trucks.
T
he man who created the concept of a volunteer fire department helped draft and signed the Declaration of Independence, invented bifocals and among other things, studied electricity. Benjamin Franklin began the first volunteer fire department in Philadelphia in 1736. Some famous Americans who served as volunteer firefighters were George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, Samuel Adams, John Hancock, Paul Revere, Alexander Hamilton, John Jay, John Barry, Aaron Burr, Benedict Arnold, James Buchanan and Millard Fillmore. With such an impressive list of patrons, the Fort Bend County firefighters are proud to be a part of this legacy. The City of Rosenberg originated in 1880. As a result of the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railroad extension, Rosenberg became a town. Once a depot and courthouse were built, the community began to colonize. During the early days, most of the residents lived in tents. Growth continued when Wells Fargo opened an office and Mrs. Ebell’s Hotel and Boarding House was built. By 1912, 56 businesses including banks, real estate firms, loan and land development companies, merchants, doctors and lawyers occupied the downtown Main Street Rosenberg area. Then, on September 10, 1914, the Rosenberg Fire Department was established. Mayor H. A. Meyer presided over the meeting for the first volunteer fire department at the J.H.P. Davis and Company Bank Building in Downtown Rosenberg. Twenty-six men committed to protecting the residents from devastating fires. The City purchased a two-wheel, handdrawn hose reel and firefighting supplies

that were stored at the City water tank. A second hose reel was purchased in December for volunteer company number two. These reels carried about 500 feet of hose, and it took 10 to 12 men to pull them to the fire. When possible, a horse or Model T car was used to pull the reels, speeding up the travel time. During the summer of 1915, the first fire station was built, a small framed building that was barely large enough to store the hose reels. Joe Catron became the first fire chief of the city.
The first Rosenberg fire station was built in 1915 and torn down in 1928 at Avenue H and 4th Street.
As time went on, the fire department had its share of problems. World War I and the draft seriously depleted the volunteers. After the war, Chief Catron reorganized the department, and 18 men joined. The city continued to grow, but during construction, no safety code was implemented. As a result, fires were inevitable. In 1949, the largest fire in the history of the city occurred. The Turicchi Construction Building in Downtown Rosenberg burned to the ground taking with it The Eagle Hotel, Eagle Café, Howard’s Drug Store and Green’s Recreation Hall. Four hours and five fire departments from Richmond, East Bernard, Wharton, West Columbia and Houston were called to help extinguish this massive blaze.

Rosenberg’s major fire at the Turicchi Construction Building in 1949.
Today, under the leadership of Fire Chief Wade Goates, the Rosenberg Fire Department employs 45 suppression personnel with eight administrative staff. They have a combination of paid and volunteer firefighters who provide fire, rescue and first responder services, along with rope rescue, hazardous material, water rescue, collapse and cave-in rescue and vehicle extraction for about 80 square miles of territory in the city and county. On September 13th, the Rosenberg Fire Department celebrated 100 years of “answering the call” for the public at the Fort Bend County Fairgrounds in Rosenberg. During the ceremony, the music of bagpipes and ringing of bells honored those lost in the line of duty. The fire department exhibits a sense of pride and devotion to continue keeping the community safe, just as our ancestors did one hundred years ago.
