We’re taking mammograms to a whole new dimension. 3 - D MAM MOG R AM S

Now available at St. Luke’s Sugar Land Hospital According to the American Cancer Society, the early detection of breast cancer saves thousands of lives each year. One of the newest tools in this effort is 3-D mammography, or tomosynthesis, which is now available at St. Luke’s Sugar Land Hospital. 3-D mammograms allow physicians to take images from different angles, providing sharper, better quality results and a reduction in “false positives.” The new technology is recommended for women with dense breast tissue and allows physicians to view images with pinpoint accuracy in order to detect smaller tumors earlier. See if a mammogram is the answer for you. Call 281-637-7001 today for an appointment.

COVER STORY 12 LUNCHES OF LOVE FILLS IN THE GAP FOR KIDS DURING SUMMER BREAK

For many Rosenberg-Richmond area children, the end of school means the end of nutritious, healthy lunches. Lunches of Love, a nonprofit started as an outreach of First United Methodist Church in Rosenberg, saw a need and created a solution. Lunches of Love fills in the gap by providing lunches to approximately 2,500 children every day during extended school holidays, including summer vacation, spring break and Christmas break, and they do it all with volunteers.

EXCLAMATION POINTS! THE INSIDE SCOOP STRAIGHT FROM THE TOP Editor-in-Chief, PATTI PARISH-KAMINSKI Now that it’s officially summer, we can all take a collective sigh of relief. The hectic school and sports schedules are over, the days are longer, life just slows down a bit. While many of us look forward to the lazy, hazy days of summer, in our cover story, we share with our readers some Rosenberg-Richmond children who previously haven’t looked forward to summer vacation. They are the over 2,500 children who are part of the Free and Reduced Lunch Program at their schools and who otherwise, would go hungry. So, what do these children eat on the weekends and during the summer when there is no school lunch? That’s where a unique organization steps up to feed hope and nutritious meals to the kids: Lunches of Love. Read on page Patti Parish-Kaminski 12 about this phenomenal organization that began as an outreach of First United Methodist Church in Rosenberg. If you have some spare time this summer, stop by the church and help make a lunch. It is definitely something my children and I will be doing this summer. I hope you will join us. I just have to tell you how proud I am of our High School Hot Shot this month, Alyssa Eaves. Alyssa is the daughter of one our long-time contributors Linda Eaves, and she graduated as valedictorian of Foster High School. And, she was named a National Merit Finalist. Way to go, Alyssa! As you are out and about in Brazos, find some time to enjoy the July 4th festivities. Both Rosenberg and Fulshear are hosting family-friendly events complete with fireworks. Read about them on page 14. As we celebrate the birth of our nation, let’s also remember those who fought – and continue to fight – for our freedom. Yes, we live in the greatest country in the world, and it is thanks in large part to our military. God bless our military, and God bless America! Happy July 4th! Absolutely! yours,

ith the community’s help, Lunches of Love is working hard to end the very real problem of childhood hunger in our community by providing a free, nutritious sack lunch. “We feed approximately 2,500 children every day during extended school holidays, including summer vacation, spring break and Christmas break, and approximately 600 chronically hungry children on the weekends,” said Adriane Gray, creator of Lunches of Love. “Lunches of Love started out as a ministry of First United Methodist Church in Rosenberg in 2009 and became its own 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization in 2012. Our target audience is the children who qualify for the state’s Free and Reduced Lunch Program. Children who depend on a nutritious breakfast and lunch each day at school are suddenly left wondering where their next meal is coming from during extended school holidays and during the weekend.”

12

ost children look forward to summer. The living is easy – no homework, no getting up early to catch the bus for school, long stretches of carefree days. In the Rosenberg-Richmond area, however, many children don’t look forward to the summer because they go hungry.

Summer Lunches of Love During the summer, volunteers meet Monday through Friday from 9 am to 11 am to make and pack the childrens’ lunches. “We make sandwiches, bag goldfish crackers, decorate lunch sacks and pack lunches. From 10:45-

JULY 2013 l TO ADVERTISE CALL 281.690.4242

12:30, our volunteers deliver to predetermined distribution sites.” In a Lunches of Love meal, each child receives: One Main Entrée: A sandwich either ham, turkey or peanut butter and jelly, or mac and cheese. The volunteers try and give a variety, especially during the 11 weeks of summer. One Cracker Product: Such as Goldfish, pretzels, Wheat Thins. One Fruit Item: Fresh, canned, and dried or yogurt. One Low-Fat Snack Item: Animal crackers or protein bars.

What the Children Say Many of the children who rely on the Free and Reduced Lunch Program love the consistency of school. They love the fact that they get up, go to school and receive both breakfast and lunch. There is air conditioning at school. The teachers love on them. While most children get excited for the summer break and school holidays,

these children do not. When they get home, they don’t know if they’re going to get a meal, they don’t know if they’re going to have electricity, they don’t have the consistency that they do at school. “So. if you ask our target audience if they’re ready for summertime or Christmas break, they’ll tell you, ‘no.’”

Maya Gonzales and Denise Hlavaty

“Last summer was our first summer at Deaf Smith Elementary,” said Gray. “At the beginning of August, I asked one of the little boys, ‘Well, are you ready for school?’ He said, ‘You know what Miss Lunch Lady, last summer I had to make sure that my four younger brothers and sisters got something to eat. Sometimes, I went without. The two older ones would go without, so we could make sure the little ones got something to eat.’” “Then he added: ‘But you know what? This summer we’re part of Lunches of Love. Now all my brothers and sisters get to eat every day. I wish summer would last a little longer.’” “The kids love the lunches. They rip open the bags to see what’s inside today’s lunch. Many of the kiddos will pull out a banana or a ‘cutie’ orange and say ‘Cool, I got a banana!’ It’s the little things – like the fresh fruit that they love – all the things we take for granted. Many of our kiddos have told us they would go hungry without their lunch from Lunches of Love.”

Volunteers Lunches of Love relies on its volunteers. “Our volunteers are the absolute best,” shared Gray. “They’re always here for Lunches of Love and the children we serve. There have been times when we’ve had a few last minute cancellations. I posted on Facebook and within 30 minutes, those spots were filled! The community has really wrapped their arms around Lunches of Love and is dedicated to packing and delivering lunches to children in need.” The program is very family friendly; all ages are welcome to volunteer. A five-year-old can put juice in a bag or decorate a lunch sack. Parents can bring their kids, and they learn at an early age to give back to the community. “I think it’s very empowering for children of all ages to make a difference. One of my favorite things about the program is to see kids of all ages helping other kids in need.” “By offering this simple little $0.75 lunch, we’re serving love, hope and a nutritious lunch. By offering unconditional love, we are helping create a kinder, more caring community,” said Gray. Lunches of Love works hand in hand with Lamar CISD schools. “The principals, assistant principals, counselors, teachers and nurses have really pitched in and help make our registration process flow very smoothly. These staff members also volunteer during the summer. Local businesses, families, individuals, churches and schools have been very supportive of our program.”

Janelle and Jake Williams

Maegan Carroll

Schools Adopted by Lunches of Love Several Lamar CISD elementary schools have been adopted by Lunches of Love to provide lunches weekend, summer and holidays to children in need. Schools include: Bowie Elementary Jackson Elementary Deaf Smith Elementary Jane Long Elementary Travis Elementary Taylor Ray Elementary Meyer Elementary Hutchison Elementary Velasquez Elementary Pink Elementary “We feed students from the above schools – plus anyone in their household 18 and under,” said Adriane Gray, founder of Lunches of Love. “We have plans to adopt Beasley Elementary this fall. We also host a community picnic and a community Christmas dinner. Our primary focus is the children. We want to make sure that the children are fed. Our program has grown by leaps and bounds, and we are loving every minute of it!” Lunches of Love’s vision for the future is to sustain their current program while expanding to include additional Title 1 schools. “We are committed to helping end childhood hunger among these innocent children,” said Gray.

JULY 2013 l TO ADVERTISE CALL 281.690.4242

During a Sunday School class, Gray and her fellow classmates were discussing prayer in school. “In my group, there were a couple of Lamar CISD teachers. We got a little off topic and started talking about the Free and Reduced Lunch Program. Those teachers started telling stories about how they knew that their kids were eating their breakfast and their lunch at school, but they could tell they didn’t eat at home. There was no food for supper.” Gray was astounded and thought, “There is no way that we’ve got children going to bed hungry in Rosenberg-Richmond. They told more stories, and their stories got more and more convincing.” Gray asked the teachers: “If the children are relying on breakfast and free and reduced lunch during the school year, what are they doing in the summer and holiday?” The teachers didn’t know. Gray forged ahead and did her homework. ”It blew my mind and broke my heart that there are children in our back yard going hungry.” She went over her findings with a couple of friends, and they decided that they had to do something. “We met with a couple of Lamar CISD staff members. Because Bowie Walker Satterwhite Elementary is close to and Adriane Gray the church and the percentage of Free and Reduced Lunches was high (92%), we met with the principal and counselor. They helped get this program started and passed out registration forms and anything they could do to help the kids; they were all for it. We work with principals, assistant principals and counselors because they know the children who need the program.” Gray went one step further and spoke to the church about what they could do. “Our church members totally embraced the program the first year with their gifts and time. When our program continued to flourish and grow, we started the paperwork and the process to become a non-profit.” “To know that this goes on in our own backyard, blows my mind, and it is heart breaking. We have so many children out there who wouldn’t receive a meal if not for Lunches of Love. It makes me want to push even harder, fundraise even more, so we can continue to sustain the program but also continue to bring more children into the program that need us so we can help them as well.” For more information about Lunches of Love or to volunteer, visit www.lunchesoflove.net or call 281.342.8321.

lyssa Eaves, valedictorian of Foster High School’s Class of 2013, was named a National Merit Finalist and received a College-Sponsored Merit Scholarship to Texas A&M University. In her junior year, she won the Bausch & Lomb Science award for academic excellence in rigorous science and math courses. She also received academic excellence awards in psychology and English. “If my friends had a question about homework, they would call me, and I was usually able to help them.” “Sometimes finding time for everything I want to do can be a little difficult. When things happen at once, that can be overwhelming, but I push through it.” Last year, Alyssa competed in regional Science Olympiad in chemistry events where she performed an experiment, noted the results, and took a written test. This year she placed first in circuit lab – a written test of circuitry concepts with a hands-on-portion where she tested actual circuits with a multimeter. She and her partner, Donovan Lemaster, won 2nd place for their gravity vehicle. “It was surprising. In science UIL regionals, she placed third overall, second in math, second in chemistry and first in physics. In her sophomore year, she auditioned for Alice in Wonderland, Jr. “I played Matilda, Alice’s sister. We worked long hours, and we got to know each other so well. The experience helped me become more comfortable speaking in front of an audience.” “A lot of team work was required because each prop had to be taken offstage for the scene changes. Everybody had to

know what they were doing, and do it really fast and quietly. It was a lot more hectic backstage than what the audience saw.” As a member of National Honor Society, she tutored a student in physics and volunteered at You-Can Academy, an after school program for elementary school children. “I helped them do their writing and reading homework. When I got them to finish, it felt like a huge accomplishment,” she said with a laugh. “At first, I worked with any child that needed help, and then I gravitated toward the Kindergarteners because they’re so happy to see you all the time.” At Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Alyssa was a member of the teen prayer group and played the role of a woman of Jerusalem in Living Stations of the Cross. She also helped with All Things Girl Camp and Vacation Bible School. “Youth Group Bible Study was interesting because I was there when it started and helped make decisions about where we wanted to go with it.” Alyssa also received the Daughters of the American Revolution Good Citizenship award. At Texas A&M, she will major in chemistry with a minor in biology and would like to work in the field of medicine.

“When things happen at once, that can be overwhelming, but I push through it.”– Alyssa Eaves 20

FILM REVIEW By Nick Nicholson

T

iming is everything. Like the timing belt in a car, a tweak here and a tweak there makes all the difference in the world. Nothing could be more accurate when it comes to the Fast & Furious film series. The studio keeps putting them out, they make tons of money and are just down right entertaining. Although each film is different, they are eerily the same. Although the formula is still there, it’s the tinkering here and there that keeps the franchise fresh and exciting for the moviegoer. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson returns as Hobbs, the DSS agent who travels the world with his team seeking the prey for their mission. After asking for help, Hobbs and the team travel to London in order to foil a hijacking scheme that has been masterminded by a former special ops soldier, Owen Shaw (Luke Evans). Should Dom and his team be successful on their mission, full pardons await for everyone on the crew. Michelle Rodriguez returns to the series as Letty, who was left for dead earlier in the series. She seems the perfect bait as she currently works with Shaw.

taposition with the dialog is brilliant. With Lin’s direction and Chris Morgan’s script, the film contains the balance necessary to have enough of each without feeling forced or overwrought. Some of the writing is well done, but the script also provides the majority of the “you can’t be serious” moments such as the explanation of Letty’s return. Please be sure to keep Cathy Bates out of the screening room! Don’t get me wrong. This film isn’t incredible, but it is a popcorn summertime action film if there ever was one. For what it is, the picture is pretty dog gone entertaining.

The cards are truly stacked against Hobbs as the team comes to the conclusion that Shaw really is ahead of them every step of the way. In one of the most spectacular stunt sequences I have seen in a long time, the action is edge of your seat palpable as the Formula One cars stack on top of each other and flip around like leaves in the wind. Justin Lin is once again the director in the series, and he doesn’t disappoint. His vision of the action and jux-

Texana Center received notice that the Texas Education Agency (TEA) has approved the Children’s Center for Autism as an accredited non-public school site. The TEA awarded this designation following a site visit to determine if the program met their eligibility criteria. The designation as an accredited nonpublic school site means that Children’s Center for Autism, which uses applied behavior analysis to treat autism, will be now able to help children where local school districts are struggling to provide an appropriate education. However, before a child is admitted to Texana’s program, the school districts must get approval from the TEA to send them. The Texana Children’s Center for Autism will be listed on the TEA website as an approved non-public site, making it easier for school districts to find the center and access the services when needed. In the past, if a school district wanted to send a child, they also had to send staff with the child each day. As of May 31st, 2013, this was no longer necessary. The Children’s Center for Autism has one certified teacher in general and special education as well as a second certified teacher who is also a Board Certified Behavior Analyst. The center staff will participate with the school in the development of Individualized Education Programs (IEP) for the student and then will implement the IEP. The center’s staff will also attend Admission, Review and Dismissal (ARD) meetings and will collaborate and coordinate with the school district to facilitate maximum success for each child. Kate Johnson-Patagoc, Director of Specialized Services at Texana, said, “We are very excited about becoming a TEA approved site as this gives us an opportunity to work more closely with the school districts. I believe our partnership with the schools and special education teachers will result in children with an autism diagnosis being more successful in the classroom.” The Texana Children’s Center for Autism is a nationally recognized program for treating autism with applied behavior analysis.

Are Parents Pushing Their Kids Too Hard in Sports?

C

hildren are starting sports at earlier ages. At Lone Star Karate, we see children beginning in sports at age 4, and the average age is 6 or 7 years old as opposed to ten years ago when the average age was 9 or 10. Due to the earlier ages, kids are specializing in certain sports for longer periods of time. By the age of 12, many children have picked their sport of choice and will continue in that sport for, on average, the next four years. Why is this so important? According to research, young children who specialize in one sport have a significantly higher chance of stress fractures and other overuse injuries. Children are not getting the “playtime” in outside activities that they once were. This general fitness or “play” was very important in balancing and compensating for the sports they played. Parents need to make sure their kids are enjoying a wide range of physical activities, not just one sport. If you prefer your child to stick with one sport, make sure he/ she is getting enough outside “playtime” to compensate for the use of certain joints and muscles. Lone Star Karate provides physical activities that can help balance children's other sports with a flexible schedule. Not only do we help them physically, but many parents say their children learn confidence and self-esteem in our martial arts program. We also offer Kickboxing and Conditioning classes for teens and adults. Next time you are looking for an activity for your child, consider Lone Star Karate located at 222 FM 359 at Hwy 90 in Richmond. For more information, call 281-513-5566.

Get Back to School at The Gingerbread House Learning Center

L

ocally owned and operated for over thirty years, the Gingerbread House Learning Center kicks off the school year with two private Pre-Kindergarten programs and onsite after school programs at three Lamar CISD elementary school campuses. Conveniently located on a beautiful two-acre campus on 4th Street in Rosenberg, the Gingerbread House Learning Center offers two private Pre-Kindergarten full day programs featuring small class sizes and experienced teachers. Pre-K classes are Monday through Friday from 6:30 am to 6 pm and are offered to two age groups. Pre-K 1 is offered for ages 3 to 4 and features a 1 to 15 teacher to student ratio. Pre-K 2 is offered for ages 4 to 5 and features a 1 to 18 teacher to student ratio. A critical year in early childhood development, the Pre-K 2 program is taught by a CDA certi-

fied teacher with over 18 years of experience. Both of the Pre-K program’s curriculums offer an introduction to reading, writing and essential math skills. LEXUS LS460

T

he Lexus LS has been the flagship of the Lexus brand since its introduction. As a luxury vehicle, it has tended to conduct its business in a modest fashion in comparison to its more showy competitors. Relying on quality instead of flash has been the way of the LS. Well, that was then, and this is now. The 2013 Lexus LS460 is ready to turn heads on the highway, as well as the country club, because style is in, and humility is out. Back in 1989, when Lexus came into being in the US market, the LS was its very first model. It was definitely subdued in the styling department although the fit and finish was superb and the engineering quality second to none. I bet that you’ll find a lot more 90’s era Lexus LSs on the road than its German competitors. And yet, the Lexus LS, although it has its legion of diehard fans, doesn’t garner the respect it deserves among car aficionados. Granted, it isn’t as exciting to drive as some of its European counterparts, but the build quality continues to amaze.

JULY 2013 l TO ADVERTISE CALL 281.690.4242

The first thing you’ll notice with the new 2013 Lexus LS is the aggressive front fascia with its bold new Lexus styling that’s migrated across the Lexus brand. Bright LED lighting makes a point of highlighting the sharp angles in the grill. This car can no longer hide in the shadows. The interior continues to be one of the best in the luxury segment with luscious leather and real wood. On the technology side, the LS features the Remote Touch system, which allows you to control many vehicle systems (climate, audio, phone controls, navigation, etc) with a joystick located within easy reach on the center console. This is one high-tech feature that’s easy to master. The 2013 Lexus LS460 is powered by a 386 hp, 4.6-liter V8 that delivers EPA-estimated fuel economy of 16 mpg in the city and 24 mpg on the highway. Mated to an eight speed automatic transmission, the LS will get you from zero to 60 mph in just under five and a half seconds. With a starting MSRP of $71,990, the LS460 is a veritable steal compared to other cars in the luxury segment. The F Sport Performance Package will bump up the price about another $10,000 and will give you a much better feel of the road. Either way, hiding in plain sight is no longer an option. Lions and Tigers and Bears: The Rosenberg Railroad Museum Presents The Circus Comes to Town Sponsor opportunities are now available for the Rosenberg Railroad Museum’s annual fundraising gala scheduled for Saturday, October 12th at Safari Texas, and this year’s event features a fun-filled evening with a circus theme. The Circus Comes to Town is a tribute to circuses that have traveled the rails to bring fun, family entertainment to communities across the nation since the mid-1800s. Proceeds from this year’s event will support program operations and general operating needs for the Museum to assist in preserving the rich heritage of the railroad industry and its contribution to the history of Fort Bend County. Congressman Pete Olson, Congressional District 22, and his wife, Nancy, are serving as Honorary Ring Masters for this year’s event. “For the past 160 years, the railroad has been a vital part of the economy and development of Fort Bend,” said Olson. “The Rosenberg Railroad Museum’s mission to preserve and display the history of the eight railroad lines that brought wealth and commerce to this area is an integral part of preserving Fort Bend’s unique history. Nancy and I are excited to be a part of this worthwhile event benefitting the Museum.” Last year, nearly 10,000 students, families, seniors and international visitors stepped through the doors of the

Rosenberg Railroad Museum to view rail cars, exhibits and to watch some 65 trains pass through Rosenberg daily. “Our annual gala raises the necessary funds to insure that, much like the circus, children of all ages can enjoy and learn from our educational programs and exhibits,” said Doris Gurecky, event chairman. The Circus Comes to Town features performance entertainment and live and silent auctions. The live auction includes a girl’s spring shopping trip to Warrenton, a weekend getaway in South Padre Island and fishing trip complete with weekend accommodations in Matagorda plus more interesting and entertaining packages. Heading up the three-ring circus is Chief Lion Tamer Doris Gurecky along with Troupers Kathy Kubelka, Robbie Reed, Lisa Rickert, Tracey Satterwhite, Debbie Straw, Terri Stuart, Lupe Uresti, Marcia Vogelsang, Sharon Wallingford and Lyn Wicke. Sponsorships are available for the event, and they range from $1,000 to $5,000. The top sponsorship is The Big Top for $5,000, and it includes two reserved tables to the event. All sponsorship opportunities – from The Ring Master to The Trapeze Artist – include tickets to the event, recognition in the program and invitations, and on-site recognition at the event.

Lions and tigers and bears, oh my! And an elephant, too! The Rosenberg Railroad Museum Presents The Circus Comes to Town is coming soon with committee members Joe Gurecky, Lisa Rickert, Doris Gurecky, Marcia Vogelsang and Honorary Ring Masters Nancy and Pete Olson. Sugar Land Skeeters Sign Kody Clemens Kody Clemens, son of legendary pitcher Roger Clemens, signed a contract with the Sugar Land Skeeters for the 2013 season. Kody Clemens, an eighth-round draft pick of the Houston Astros in 2005, is familiar with the independent league team. He served as his father’s catcher in the second of the Rocket’s two starts for the Skeeters last summer. “Kody showed me a lot last year. He’s played different positions, he’s always been a good hitter and you know his pedigree and his bloodline are solid,” Skeeters Manager Gary Gaetti said. “When he came to catch last year, he looked really good behind the plate. For me, he looked good enough to take a chance on and to be our guy to catch.” You can catch Kody and the other Skeeters all summer long. Log onto www.sugarlandskeeters.com.

White Wine

Myths Summer vacation is here, and it is time get toasting! For all of you out there who shy away from the refreshment of whites and pinks, I’ve got a few white wine myths and misconceptions to dispel. If you think that white wines are for lightweights and those who like sweet wines, then please read on. Are you guilty of saying – or thinking – any of the following?

Riesling is way too sweet for me Once upon a time, I thought all Rieslings were sweet, too. And then, I discovered some deliciously dry ones. Rieslings can be sweet, dry or somewhere in between the two, which makes it a great grape for discovery. What most Rieslings typically do have, though, is crisp acidity, that element that makes your mouth water just a touch as you take a sip. That same element is what makes them an excellent thirst-quenching summer wine and also a perfect food wine. But, don’t think you must drink Rieslings with food only. Rieslings are often great for drinking without food as well.

Pink? No way! I don’t like white Zinfandel Kody and Roger Clemens on the field as Sugar Land Skeeters.

Debbie and Kody Clemens.

Pink wine has come a long way from what we saw in the 1980s in the United States. Just like not all Rieslings are sweet, pink wine does not mean sweet wine. Rosés can be can be bone dry or a tad sweet or absolutely sweet and fruity, but not the sweet and fruity of the past. And, rosés have definitely stepped up in stature as winemakers have begun to craft glorious layered rosés, using blends of Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache, Malbec, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Sangiovese, Syrah, Tempranillo and yes, Zinfandel. The color is pink because the wine does not have as much skin contact with the grapes as its

red cousins. Rosés also typically pair well with food, due to their acidity, and they are a perfect way to enjoy the sunset.

All Chardonnays taste the same Chardonnay also has great variety when it comes to flavor. Some Chardonnays are buttery, oaky, creamy and toasty, and some are crisp and clean, letting the fruit run the show. This difference is made by either letting the wine age in oak barrels or in stainless steel. Oak imparts the flavor of the wood onto the wine, whereas stainless steel lets the flavor of the grapes shine, resulting in a crisper, cleaner flavor. Some winemakers choose to age completely in one surface or another, whereas some may use a blend of wines aged both ways, resulting in a softer oak influence. For summer especially, I prefer Chardonnays aged in stainless for a refresher. There are so many fantastic and refreshing white and rosé wines at every price point for you to enjoy at picnics, and parties, and even while dodging the heat by staying indoors in the air conditioning we love here in Houston. hen our founding fathers were granted land from Mexico in 1827, Abner Harris and partner William Barrett acquired a choice piece of real estate located on the Brazos River. This land, roughly 5,000 acres with 3.2 miles of water, was one of the principal routes of commerce and riverboat landings. At the beginning of More than two the twentieth cenhundred species of birds live in or tury, the land was migrate through purchased by the Brazos Bend State Herman Hale famPark. ily and was home to cattle grazing, pecan harvesting and a private hunting preserve. Then in 1976, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department purchased the land, and eight years later opened Brazos Bend State Park. Only about 28 miles southwest of Houston, this natural paradise combines history with the preservation of land and nature to entice any explorer. There is evidence of prehistoric settlers as early as 300 B.C. with fifteen registered landmarks on the park grounds. Ten sites date back to Indian Archaic and Neo American, and five relate to the early Anglo American Settlement. Cotton was grown on the land; a handmade brick cistern used by the slaves of the cotton growers stills stands on the property. Visitors to Brazos Bend will find endless things to do. The park is home to over 300 species of birds, 21 species of reptiles and 23 species of mammals.

The wetland area has a special draw for people to view the alligators living in the water. Fully paved nature trails allow safe passage through the grounds, accessible boardwalk and an observation deck for wildlife viewing. Forty acres are designated hike and bike trails that lead to Elm and Helm Lakes and interconnect. Twenty primitive equestrian campsites are located on a nine-mile trail system. Camping in the park is accommodating with 13 screened shelters equipped with electricity, water, picnic table and restrooms nearby. Other activities include fishing, horseback riding, biking, picnicking and bird watching. In 1986, as a result of Haley’s comet and over 7,000 people coming to the park to view the phenomenon, a group of innovative people set out to create an observatory that housed telescopes for public viewing and star gazing. After several years of generous donations and contributors, three telescopes were installed, and the George Observatory was opened. The largest observatory in the

Texas Parks and Wildlife offers patrons annual park passes that allow entry to all 90 state parks in Texas. Brazos Bend is not just a wildlife preserve but also an educational facility with a full schedule of events to inform and entertain all ages. Nature programs are scheduled every weekend. Live music performances are held at the outdoor Amphitheater. In October, the park hosts the Annual Butterfly Count and a Halloween Classic Movie night. November features Prairie Heritage Day on the Nature Center lawn. In December, visitors can experience A Simple Christmas and participate in the Christmas Bird Count.
