If you have children in Fort Bend schools, you have likely been on a field trip to the ranch. I can’t even count how many times my family and I have enjoyed activities at the George Ranch, and now, there’s a new immersive exhibit that combines nature and history providing a unique educational and enjoyable experience. The Heritage Trail opened in May, and this quarter of a million dollar project tells the story of how the early settlers had to adapt to their environment in order to survive. The trail winds along the banks of the Dry Creek, and the setting is both serene and thought-provoking. The Heritage Trail is a great way to spend time with the family, and on July 13th, the ranch is hosting its 25th Anniversary Celebration offering free admission to the public. Take some time this summer to visit the George Ranch; you won’t be disappointed. Our High School Hot Shot this month is Patti Fennesy from Foster High School. Read about Patti’s achievements and her love of animals on page 14, and if you know someone who is High School Hot Shot material, let us know. We love shining the spotlight on our youth. The Heritage Trail The George Ranch Historical Park is already wellknown for the four generations of one family that homesteaded the property over one hundred years. The farm, the prairie home, as well as the ranch mansion and complex have been visited for years by an adoring

public, but now there is something new – celebrating the old – in store for the 70,000 visitors to the ranch each year. At a cost of a quarter of a million dollars, the newest edition to the ranch celebrates Fort Bend’s heritage in a brand new way.

O
n May 4th, the George Ranch Historical Park unveiled a half-mile immersive exhibit called The Heritage Trail. The trail runs along the banks of the Dry Creek in an area that previously had been off limits to all visitors. George Ranch Historical Park Executive Director Candace Jones is quick to point out the new addition isn’t simply a nature trail. “This is both a nature and a history trail. By combining the two, it makes this a very unique experience. The purpose is to educate visitors to a very interesting and often ignored concept of our cultural heritage. We often somewhat arrogantly announce that the pioneers were responsible for taming and harnessing the land here upon their arrival in 1836. Nothing could be further from the truth.” Jones went on to state, “Anyone who understands Mother Nature knows it was clearly the other way around. The early settlers had to adapt their entire lifestyle to utilize the natural resources of their new home or they simply would not survive. The mission of this trail is to explore and learn from this awareness.”
The construction of The Heritage Trail took 18 months.
Approximately two years ago, Jones presented her vision to the George Foundation Trustees who were more than interested in creating this opportunity for the county and its communities. Once an expert trail designer was contracted to come in to assist in the design of the project and see it through to fruition, the scope of the project really began to take shape. The George Trustees accepted the final proposal and the 18-month construction process was set to begin. When ground was finally broken on the east bank of Dry Creek for The Heritage Trail, the employees really became excited seeing their hard work and vision becoming a reality.

ooking for something fun and educational for the kids to do this summer? Consider the Hands On History Summer Program activities at the George Ranch Historical Park. There is something for everyone with the Hands On History Summer Programs at the George Ranch. On July 13th, the ranch will host its 25th Anniversary Celebration. The park will be open free to the public in full celebration of the 25 years of being a part of the Fort Bend County community. The day will be full of games, 25 cent food and drinks and all the fun you can have in one day! “There is nothing else like this trail anywhere else in the world,” stated Jones. “The natural resources are abundant here. This trail is as innovative and as educational as they come.” Jones was very pleased with the decision by the George Foundation to move forward and commit to bringing this trail to reality, something that was simply impossible to ignore during our interview. The concept of an interpretive trail is very important and personal to Jones. “For many years, I have wanted to incorporate this overlooked concept into the cognitive experience of those who visit our historical park. Although it is my opinion, you simply can’t completely understand the story of human history without considering the influence of the natural environment. You must also recognize the choices that were made by the pioneers who first settled this land and the adaptations they had to make in order to survive in this rugged environment.” Those that choose to partake in the opportunity to experience this new combination trail at the George Ranch may very well have both an educational and emotional experience. “The trail is designed to provide the public with a thought provoking and an interactive environment,” remarked Jones. “This trail is quiet and peaceful, yet it does provide the perfect setting to create an accurate representation of what the early settlers had to deal with when they moved into the area back in 1836.” This new self-guided trail is quite serene and definitely showcases the beauty and picturesque sections of the Dry Creek for the enjoyment of the public. This unique trail and the creative opportunities that it will provide is the perfect fodder for family entertainment. What more could you ask for than the opportunity to see nature and history in its unmolested state? A visit to The Heritage Trail at the George Ranch Historical Park is simply a must for everyone, so put on your hiking boots, and check it out this summer. High School HOT SHOT Patti Fennesy: A Love of Nature
P
atti Fennesy, an incoming senior at Foster High School, recently earned the Gold Award, the Girl Scouts’ highest honor. For her project, she worked to revitalize the landscaping at Austin Elementary School. “I wanted something that would benefit the whole community, and the school needed landscaping. I like that years from now I can drive by and see all of the plants grown up, and remember that I was responsible for starting it.” Patti led the project from collecting donations and planting to watering and thank you notes. During the summer, she watered 16 crepe myrtles and five live oak trees between her morning and afternoon marching band practice where she played the trumpet. Patti enjoys volunteering at the Wildlife Center of Texas. “My favorite time is between the owls and baby squirrels. The baby squirrels have lots of energy, but it’s very relaxing to feed them. They crawl all over you. One time we were all focused on feeding the squirrels; it was very quiet. A lady blurted out, ‘Can someone get this squirrel off my back?’”
Patti “We use little syringes with a nipple on the end and some formula, and we have different formulas for different ages. The bunnies have to be held tight so they don’t bounce out of your hand. It can take an hour to feed one because they sit there and stare at you.” “The owls are so beautiful. The barn owls are my favorite. The birds of prey seem to have their own look and personality. I really love being around animals. It’s fun; I can learn a lot because I want to work with animals in the future, so it’s a good experience.” Patti also enjoys fostering kittens for the Houston SPCA. She and her family foster kittens that are too young, sick, recovering from surgery, or have been there a long time and need to get out of the shelter. “We provide the TLC until
they grow to two pounds to be returned for adoption. They’re usually adopted within a few days.” They also foster kittens that need help getting used to living in a house and being held and played with. “Some are rough, and others are relaxed and super cuddly and sweet.” Last summer, Patti attended Texas A&MGalveston Sea Camp for marine biology. “I learned a lot, and it was really good to live in the dorms and make new friends.” She’s working on her senior red belt in Taekwondo. At Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Patti is active in the Youth Group, works in the nursery and is an altar server. At Foster, she’s a member of the marching band, basketball, Foster Friends, Foster Book Club, Life Chain and PowerSET. Following graduation, Patti hopes to attend Texas A&M-Galveston to study marine biology. Her advice: “It’s always really good to be a part of things, or at least one thing. As long as you’re doing what you like, even if it’s taking your time and effort, I think you’ll be happy.”

Twenty percent of the solar heat gained in your home comes from sunlight shining through windows, so shading your windows is a great way to start saving energy and money. On the west side of your home, plant shade trees, put up trellises with fast growing foliage or install awnings. Awnings can be retractable or stationary. Even with a blind on my west facing bath window, the heat would melt the makeup off of my face in the afternoon. A quality solar screen on the exterior of the window can affect a change instantly making the temperature inside much more pleasurable, as the sunlight is deflected before it can enter the glass. Not only will these items save on cooling cost, but they will also help stop fading of your floors and furniture. Screens for the patio can also make the area bearable and help with less sun entering the home.

K-9 “Mike” is a Belgian Malinois and has been working with the Fort Bend County Narcotics Task Force since 2008.
ome folks might say K-9 “Mike” is worth his weight in gold, but that valuation falls way short. Since K-9 “Mike” has been a member of the Fort Bend County Narcotics Task Force, he has helped bring in millions of dollars in seized cash and drugs, mostly along the U.S. 59 corridor. K-9 “Mike,” a Belgian Malinois, showed off his skills in April when he and his handler, Detective M. Hricko, attended the National Narcotic Detector Dog Association (NNDDA) conference held in Laredo, Texas. The NNDDA Nationals played host to 96 K-9 handlers representing agencies throughout the
nation. Mike and Detective Hricko participated in the competition at the event with Mike taking third place. “K-9 ‘Mike’ has been a valuable member of the Fort Bend County Narcotics Task Force since July 2008,” said Lt. Josh Dale of the Task Force. “Detective Hricko has been Mike’s handler since November 2011 and has done a great job maintaining K-9 ‘Mike’s’ high level of detection.” Dale added that all the agencies represented in the Task Force “are proud of this great K-9 team assigned to the Task Force.” K-9 “Mike’s” most recent endeavor was helping find $230,000 in cash linked to illicit drug activity when a tractor-trailer rig was stopped on U.S. 59 in Rosenberg on March 19th. The Fort Bend Junior Service League (FBJSL) was pleased to present Arielle Schochler and Victoria Rigsby college scholarships in the amount of $1,000 each for their outstanding volunteer efforts in Fort Bend County. The recipients were chosen from a highly qualified pool of applicants from public, private and parochial schools throughout Fort Bend County. The winners stood out among the other candidates as leaders in their schools as well as in their various volunteer efforts. Arielle Schochler of Needville High School has contributed over 1000 hours of community and school service hours throughout her high school career. She is a member of the National Honor Society, Spanish Club, Student Council, FFA, Project Graduation and serves as historian of the History Club. She has participated in the Fort Bend Youth in Philanthropy, St. Michaels’s Catholic Church Youth Ministry, Needville 4-H as Secretary, Fort Bend County 4-H Youth Council, 4-H Vet Science Program sponsored by Texas A & M University, Junior Livestock Committee for the Fort Bend County Fair and Needville Youth Fair. Arielle will attend Wharton Junior College and then transfer to Texas A & M University in Galveston to major in Animal Science. Victoria Rigsby of Fort Bend Christian Academy has contributed over 700 hours of community and school service hours throughout her high school career. She is

hen you hear the name Volvo, what do you think? Probably the first two things are safety and Sweden. And, you would be right because the Volvo brand continues to be a leader in automotive safety, and it’s now the only Swedish car brand. The 2013 Volvo XC60 embodies both of those concepts in a very big way as a midsize crossover wagon that is subtly stylish on the outside, very Swedish on the inside and very safe all around. For decades, Volvo pioneered automotive safety technology and car buyers looking for the safest car to drive usually chose the Swedish car brand. In 1999, Ford Motor Company bought Volvo and turned it into just another Ford division where it lost a lot of its brand identity. In 2010, Ford sold it to the Chinese automotive maker, Geely, and lo and behold, Volvo has returned to safety and Swedish design. If you’re a fan of Swedish design, then you’re going to love the XC60. The interior features a flowing center console that seems to float above the floor, and the dashboard wraps around you in a gentle curve. The materials used are soft, the leather lush and the colors calming. But now to the safety features that set the XC60 apart from its rivals. The XC60 is the first Volvo equipped with their City Safety feature, a driver support system aimed at

By utilizing a closing velocity sensor, the XC60 will either pre-charge the brakes or automatically brake the car to help avoid a rear-end collision or lessen its impact. Another convenient Volvo safety first feature for families with young children is their built-in Dual Two-Stage Integrated Booster Seats with Adaptive Seatbelts. This eliminates the constant putting in and taking out booster seats to accommodate both kids and adults. These booster seats are integrated into the rear seats and even can be adjusted as the children grow. And, when the booster cushions are not needed, they’re easily folded into the rear seat cushions. With a MSRP of $35,350, the base XC60 is equipped with a 240 hp, 3.2 liter that gets an estimated 19 mpg in the city and 25 mpg on the highway. If you need a little more power, you can opt for the 300 hp, 3.0-liter turbocharged engine that delivers fuel economy of 17 mpg city and 20 mpg highway. exans can be proud of so many things. The climate and land around us, mild winters and long summers and of course, our heritage. Our city leaders strive to keep our heritage alive with historical parks, markers and museums. The suburbs of Houston are continuing to grow and prosper, and Fort Bend County has a significant history that leads a path to today’s successes. One Fort Bend city with a strong heritage is Fulshear.
