The March winds have blown in all kinds of activities in Brazos! We have been out and about at so many wonderful events, and we love seeing so many of our friends and neighbors! I must say that I personally have been overwhelmed by the warm wishes and congratulations pouring in from winning our three international marketing and communication awards. It’s definitely an exciting time for us here at absolutely! focus media as we have grown to publishing four monthly community magazines thanks to the support of our advertisers Tim and Patti Kaminski. and readers. We’re making history and creating memories because of your support, and we sincerely thank you. Speaking of history, this month we shine the spotlight on an historic event: the opening of the newly restored Fort Bend County Courthouse. This $5.8 million project that began in 2011 is finally complete, and this historic landmark will now be preserved for future generations to enjoy. Congratulations to County Judge Bob Hebert, his staff and the George Foundation for their steadfast efforts in preserving our history. Preserving our history and memories is so important, and in our cover story, we introduce you to China Oiler whose business is preserving both memories and an art form of long ago: quilting. China and her staff at CJ’s Quilt Shop in Richmond make beautiful memory quilts for clients, and they teach as well as provide a multitude of resources for anyone wanting to capture a special memory or learn how to quilt themselves. Spring Break is this month, and we hope you all have a safe and fun time creating memories with your family and friends. We will see you out and about in Brazos! Absolutely! yours,

the area surrounding the shop contributes to the atmosphere found inside. This section of Richmond is a beautiful landscape of ranches, acreage home sites and scenic views. According to China Oiler, owner of CJ’s Quilt Shop, “I chose this location because it was so peaceful and inviting. It is perfect for the art of quilting.” After moving to Texas in 1975 and starting a family, China knew that this
MARCH 2014 l TO ADVERTISE: 281.690.4242 or www.absolutelybrazos.com
would be her permanent home. The one thing that China did not know was that she would eventually be the owner of a quilt shop. China explained that she came into this business quite by accident. “I went to Wharton County Junior College to obtain a degree in Drafting. Just as I was about to graduate, I had two granddaughters born, and I thought how nice it would be for them to have a quilt made by their grandmother. But, I quickly remembered that I already had three grandsons and other members of my immediate family who would like a quilt as well. Before I knew it, I had quite a few quilts that I needed to make.” “I started my first quilt but found that getting it quilted was not some-
thing that could be done in a short amount of time. I was told that it would take about eight weeks, and I did not have that much time. So, I went to McDougal’s to buy a quarter inch foot to help keep my seams even. I mentioned to them that I was interested in a longarm quilting machine.” China got all of the details on the best machine to buy and decided to put her drafting ability to good use and start quilting. “I joined the Coastal Prairie Quilt Guild and started quilting charity quilts. I also joined a quilting Bee and some of my newfound friends gave me a chance to quilt their quilt tops. I set up a booth at the Fort Bend County Fair and at Stubbs Harley Davidson and started taking orders for T-shirt quilts. I quickly discovered that I would need more batting, backing fabric, thread and other supplies. I could not contain all of the quilting items to my quilt room. Quilting was taking over my entire house! I had to find a place to do this, so the shop was the answer.” With the help of her husband John, daughter Sarah, son Aaron, Marja Carew and friends from the Pecan Grove Quilters, China’s dream came to life. In October of 2013, CJ’s Quilt Shop opened their location at 5529 FM 359, Suite E, in Richmond. Equipped with a Gammill Longarm Quilting Machine with a Statler Stitcher, the possibilities of what can be created at CJ’s are endless. With this unique machine, the shop offers its visitors the newest techniques available in the art of quilting.
Necessity to Art Form This is not your grandmother’s quilting. Years ago, quilting was done out of necessity in homes on a large frame. Women would gather with family and friends to work on a quilt. This skill was a necessity for women of this time. Although companionship was found during these quilting sessions, quilting remained a long and tedious process. Each group had its own methods; some would piece squares of fabric together, and others would embroider the square, which would later be sewn together. Usually, these groups of wom-
en would move from house to house to sew on different quilts. The fabric used for the quilts was based on the materials available at the time, many times scraps of material left over from clothing that had been made by the women. The purpose of these quilts was for warmth, but they usually carried a story of life experiences. Some were given to new mothers for their children, others were made as wedding gifts for newly married couples. The process of quilting has come a long way from the days of old. Some people still prefer to do the sewing by hand, but thankfully, other options are available. The longarm quilting machine offers a computerized program that stitches detailed designs consistently over a large area. The process is more convenient and much faster than hand sewing. Custom designs are also a feature of this equipment. With the longarm quilt machine, the possibilities are endless.
Services CJ’s Quilt Shop offers different types of commissioned quilts, T-shirt quilts and pieced quilts. Clients also have the option of completing the top themselves and having the quilting process completed at the shop. Custom digitized designs can be ordered and quilted according to client preferences. With custom pieces available from crib to king size, pricing is quoted after all design requirements have been determined. CJ’s is truly a one stop shop for all quilting needs. The shop carries a beautiful assortment of fabrics in all colors, patterns and varieties to accommodate all ranges and types of quilting. CJ’s also carries a complete line of quilting supplies for the quilter and longarmers including Aurifil thread, pellon Legacy batting and other sewing notions.
T-shirt memory quilts are very popular with China’s younger clients.

Atmosphere for Creative Possibilities CJ’s Quilt Shop is a haven for creativity. With an array of beautiful fabrics and an assortment of pre-cut quilting pieces, clients of all ages can learn – and enjoy – the art of quilting in an inviting setting. The art of quilting represents many different things to those who design them. Some quilts are made to reflect a specific life experience, usually referred to as Memory Quilts. According to China, T-shirt memory quilts are very popular with younger clients. Memories captured from their high school and college years can be put together as a wonderful graduation gift that they will treasure forever. Whether you have been quilting for years or are a novice to the art, CJ’s Quilt Shop makes it easy, and it’s definitely worth a trip to the shop to learn all about the quilting possibilities that are available. “It doesn’t matter if you know how to quilt or not,” said China, who maintains a busy schedule running the shop, quilting for herself and for her customers and teaching. “I enjoy helping people create keepsakes and preserve memories. It’s a gift to help preserve the art of quilting.” For more information about CJ’s Quilt Shop, visit www.CJQuilting.com or call 832.222.2033. Memorial Hermann Child Life Specialists Help Young Patients Deal With Medical Care Child Life Specialists are among a team of highly skilled pediatric professionals
W
hen children must undergo surgery or other medical procedures, it can be a time of great stress and anxiety for them and their parents. To help families during these emotionally challenging times, Memorial Hermann Sugar Land Hospital offers the support of a Child Life Specialist, a highly skilled professional with comprehensive training in human development and psychology. Memorial Hermann Sugar Land is the only Fort Bend County hospital providing this specialized service. Child Life Specialists use ageappropriate play, education and other activities to promote effective coping by pediatric patients – up to the developmental age of 17 – as they face the uncertainty of a healthcare setting. They also support family members and help explain to a patient’s siblings what they might see when visiting their brother or sister. “Most of the questions I get are about the anesthesia and the IV,” said Hollie Young, one of the Child Life Specialists at Memorial Hermann Sugar Land. “Research shows that if the children know what’s going to happen, they’re less likely to be anxious and they feel more in control. When stress is Memorial Hermann and Sam’s Club representatives gathered to celebrate as Deborah White of Memorial Hermann Sugar Land, seated, accepts a generous gift from Eric Sweet, seated, manager of Sam’s Club Sugar Land. effectively managed, patients tend to heal faster.” For children facing surgery, pictures of the surgical rooms and equipment help familiarize them with the hospital setting and understand what lies ahead. For a child who has never been to the hospital and is anxious about a breathing treatment, things like books, coloring materials or access to a television show can be a welcome distraction. For older siblings, dolls and stuffed animals can aid in explaining the tubes and equipment they will see when visiting their new brother or sister. “It’s amazing what can be accomplished by simply making the child’s environment more normal. The anxiety levels come down immediately,” said Young. “It’s so rewarding to see a smile on a child’s face or have them wave at you. I really enjoy connecting with them and making a difference.”
Delivering Comprehensive, Specialized Care to Children Designed to provide specialized care for sick or injured children, the Emergency Center at Memorial Hermann Sugar Land includes highly skilled pediatric professionals who know how to get children to smile and cooperate. In addition to child-friendly rooms with colorful murals of playful animals and child-sized medical equipment, the center features an affiliated onsite, board-certified pediatrician from 5 p.m. to 1 a.m. daily – the peak period for children’s emergency visits. During other hours, an affiliated pediatric hospitalist is available. In addition to emergency care, affiliated physicians, who are boardcertified in the pediatric subspecialties of neurology, orthopedics and ENT, care for children in the community.

Gift from Sam’s Club Will Benefit Children A recent $20,000 gift from Sam’s Club Sugar Land will allow the hospital to build a children’s playroom on the 1st floor and to upgrade the children’s play area on the 5th floor. “This gift enables Memorial Hermann Sugar Land to improve the health of children with our quality care in a child friendly setting,” said Deborah White, physician referral coordinator for the hospital.

Lone Star Stomp XXV: Southern Belles & Beaux Save the date for the return of the Fort Bend County Museum Association’s annual fundraising gala, Lone Star Stomp, to be held at George Ranch Historical Park on Saturday, April 12th. This year marks the 25th anniversary of one of Fort Bend County’s most loved charity events. The theme for Lone Star Stomp XXV, Southern Belles & Beaux, radiates classic elegance and true Texas hospitality. In celebration of the Stomp’s silver anniversary, the indoor arena at George Ranch Historical Park will be ornamented in royal blue, silver and white with magnolia flowers. “The magnolias are especially significant because they are a reminder of the early days of the Museum Association. Just as the towering magnolia tree in the front lawn of the Moore Home has grown to an impressive size, so has the membership of Fort Bend County Museum Association grown,” said Lindsay Lucas, Director of Development. This unforgettable evening will feature a Texas-sized dinner, live music by the Josh Fuller Band, dancing, live, silent and quick draw auctions. Individual tickets are $65 each, and table reservations are available. All proceeds from Lone Star Stomp XXV benefit the Fort Bend County Museum Association’s educational and historic preservation efforts. A variety of sponsorship and underwriting opportunities are available, and Stomp organizers are currently seeking donations for the live and silent auctions. Dial Down the
Drama
Living With – and Loving – Teenage Girls
Y
ou knew you were blessed when you brought home your delicate pink bundle of joy. You showered all your love on her and watched her blossom. As she grew, you enjoyed tea parties and baked cookies together. You hugged and laughed often. She wore princess dresses, and she adored you. Then, she went to middle school, you bought her a cell phone, and everything changed. For mothers with teenage daughters, it’s not uncommon to feel like you’ve gone from blessing to battle mode in the blink of an eye. Licensed therapist and life coach Colleen O’Grady believes there are things you can do to make the teenage years more positive and enjoyable for you and your daughter. “If moms have a strategy, they can have good moments with their daughter every day,” O’Grady said. She suggests looking for small opportunities to show you are interested in your daughter. Just five minutes here or fifteen minutes there can really make a difference. Look for moments when she is
20
relaxed to strike up a conversation. Also, make sure that you don’t become the 24 hour monitor. “You can get so stuck being the 24 hour checker that your relationship becomes all about the list of things she has to do,” advised O’Grady. Additionally, moms need to resist engaging in all the drama their daughters may create. O’Grady explains that teenage girls are hard-wired for drama. A girl’s prefrontal cortex, which controls impulsivity and emotional outbursts, is not fully developed until her late 20s. Combine that with her changing hormones, and you have a recipe for some tense moments and conflict. “Drama is the enemy of any mother daughter relationship,” commented O’Grady. When your daughter is having a meltdown, the biggest priority is to get her to calm down and de-escalate the situation. This is not the moment to resolve the conflict or dole out punishments. “The reward for not reacting in that moment is that you have time to create a plan.” Later, if you feel a consequence is needed, you can come up

with something that helps your daughter make amends. For example, you can have her help you make dinner. “Empower her to be a healthy adult by learning to make amends. It’s a great life skill.” Of course, it’s easy to say don’t match your daughter shout for shout, but not “losing it” in the heat of an argument can be pretty difficult. O’Grady recommends a couple ways to help you achieve that goal. A big part of her Power Your Parenting Program urges mothers to take care of themselves. She describes the Mom Phenomenon as when “you pay attention to everyone and everything in your life except you.” Imagine yourself as a cup. When you first become a mother, you are full of patience, love and kindness. That is what spills out of you for your child. However, if you become consumed with caring for everyone else and neglect yourself, you become full of stress, exhaustion and resentment. Then stress and anxiety will be spilling out of you towards your child. O’Grady firmly believes, “It is crucial to pay attention to you.” Finally, O’Grady stresses living with intention. “An intention is a guiding principle that helps you remember what your really want and how you want to respond to your family.” Just saying you intend to be a good mom is too broad. You have to really examine your desires for your family and create a very personal statement. For example, if you fear you are too hard on your daughter, your intention could be: “I intend to see my daughter’s strengths.” O’Grady advised that, “If you live proactively and intentionally, these can be the best years with your daughter.”

Mayor Moore Announces Candidacy for Mayor of Richmond Richmond Mayor Evalyn Moore has announced her candidacy to continue leading the City of Richmond as mayor. Moore completed the term of her late husband, Hilmar G. Moore, who served as Richmond mayor for 63 years. Mayor Evalyn Moore has been serving the citizens of Richmond as mayor since December 2012. During her tenure, Moore has continued her husband’s legacy of making Richmond a better place to live, work and raise families. “Richmond is more than just a place we call home,” said Moore. “It has become a place where each of us, and our neighbors, can peacefully raise our families, open and grow businesses and receive first class, premiere city services. This was Hilmar’s legacy, it is my legacy and most importantly, it is the legacy of every resident of our great town. Together, we have built what I believe is the greatest city in the Lone Star State.” Moore’s focus is both preserving and
preparing Richmond for the future. During her tenure, the City of Richmond passed a new city charter that will encourage a more favorable business climate in Richmond. “The new city charter will result in the arrival of more local businesses and an increase in prosperity for those businesses already here,” said Moore, who believes that the new charter will also lead to the growth of more local jobs. Moore stated that a further reduction of the tax burden on Richmond residents is a benefit of the new city charter and also a priority for her as mayor. “Richmond taxpayers simply deserve more of their hard earned dollars, and if we continue to grow our city efficiently, and in the right direction, we can accomplish that.” Ensuring a long-term, sustainable water supply for the future is also a priority for Moore. “I will ensure that Richmond becomes compliant with the Subsidence District mandate to reduce ground
water pumpage by 30 percent by 2016 and by 60 percent by 2025. This is critical as part of our plan to ensure that our citizens have an affordable, and adequate supply of water to cover all of Mayor Evalyn Moore our current and future needs.” Moore has lived in Richmond for over 35 years. Her maternal grandfather, the late Hunter P. Harris, was a Fort Bend County judge, and her parents, Billie Harris Wendt and the late Jack Wendt, have been active civic leaders in the community. “My campaign is about Richmond’s future and the way we thoughtfully manage it toward even greater prosperity,” said Moore. The election for Richmond Mayor is scheduled for Saturday, May 10th.

County Judge Bob Hebert and County Commissioners James Patterson, Grady Prestage and Andy Meyers were present to pass the resolution of court on this historic day. A short program followed in the rotunda where many Fort Bend County citizens were present to celebrate the rehabilitation of the building. The Lamar Consolidated Choir, directed by Sean Saunders, filled the historic halls with songs of patriotism, with a finale of Texas Our Texas. Judge Hebert noted most of the furniture and several items, such as a horse collar and stretcher and hand water pump located throughout the courthouse, were donated by the George Foundation. Attendees were encouraged to tour the courthouse and visit the Janey Wessendorff Community Room and the Mamie George Community Room, both located on the first floor in the 1935 addition. Historical Commission Docents were available on every floor to answer questions and provide historical information about each area. How many people make New Year’s resolutions? Everyone does, and everyone seems to make pretty much the same ones every year! They go something like this: Adopt healthier habits, make more time for family and friends, take time to relax more often, enjoy the beauty that surrounds us, find reasons to be grateful and simply have fun. Giving these resolutions a little more thought helps you realize that all of those resolutions can easily be met while spending time in the garden. Gardening and healthy living go hand in hand. What could be healthier than eating fresh homegrown fruits, vegetables and herbs from your own backyard? And, while the process of gardening is wonderful physical exercise, recent studies suggest that gardening can also improve your mood, reduce stress and encourage a more hopeful and grateful outlook on life. Gardening can bring about a greater feeling of connectedness and can provide relief from traumatic experiences, such as illness or grief. Gardens can be peaceful retreats to reconnect with family and friends or a quiet place to re-energize. Working in the garden alone or as a family is a hobby sure to bring hours of fun and many rewards. With all of the benefits that gardening brings, why not resolve to visit Enchanted Forest and Enchanted Gardens’ nurseries in the new season to see what plants and gardening can do for you? With custom features including gourmet kitchens, open living and entertainment areas, spacious master suites and outdoor entertainment spaces, the luxury patio homes appeal to those seeking a low-maintenance style of living, yet large enough for families to entertain, says Shannon Vining, marketing manager of Darling Homes. “Their design provides all of the amenities a buyer could ask for in a low-maintenance home,” adds Vining. New patio homes from Sitterle Homes are inspired by Hill Country vistas and have a distinctly relaxed vibe. Since entertaining is important, the plans have open kitchens/great rooms that look out onto outdoor living areas. “Patio homes are a great fit for both active empty nesters and busy, young professionals,” adds Steve Von Hofe, Houston division president for Sitterle Home. “It’s an easy-going lifestyle that has come of age.” The luxury patio homes from Sittlerle Homes and Darling Homes will be

2014 LINCOLN MKZ T
he 2014 Lincoln MKZ is Ford Motor Company’s first real expression of their dedication to revitalize their luxury line. Now rebranded as the Lincoln Motor Car Company, Ford has finally pulled out all the stops in their efforts to bring back their iconic luxury status symbol. And, it shows in the new MKZ, a car that harkens to the past while being thoroughly upto-date in incorporating technology that matters. Lincolns used to be one of two top luxury car brands, along with Cadillac, that ruled American highways. But two gas crises of the 1970s that hurt large car sales, and then, Ford’s inattention to the brand eventually led to Lincoln’s drop in popularity with American buyers. Suddenly, German and Japanese luxury brands seemed cool and hip, and Lincoln was relegated to those that thought of Lincoln as a style setter. Ford realized that they needed to do something big to refocus luxury buyers back to the Lincoln brand. That first of many big things is the Lincoln MKZ, which was initially introduced as a 2013 model. It shares its DNA with the new Ford Fusion, but unlike previous Lincolns that were barely disguised versions of a Ford, this new MKZ has its own dis-
tinct personality. Its outer shell is pure elegant Lincoln, with a grill that’s the latest version of the Lincoln split-wing that first appeared on the 1936 Zephyr. And the interior, with standard leather seats, boasts the latest in automotive technology incorporated in MyLincoln Touch that allows you to do more than just communicate hands free. With SYNC, you can set cabin temperatures, radio stations and destinations with the sound of your voice. For a base MSRP of $36,190, you have the option of choosing between two engines: a 240hp, 2.0 liter four cylinder EcoBoost that gets 22 mpg in the city and 33 mpg on the highway. Or, for the same price, you can get the most fuel efficient luxury hybrid in America with a 2.0 liter Atkinson engine mated to a battery that puts out 188 hp and gets an impressive 45 mpg city and 45 mpg highway. For a little more money, you can get the 300 hp, 3.7 liter V6 that growls when you turn it on. If you’re in the market for an upscale mid-size sedan, do yourself a favor and check out the new face of Lincoln, the 2014 MKZ. It’s the latest advance in luxury. City of Richmond Hires Former Greater Houston Partnership Official to Lead Economic Development Rob Tobias, a former Greater Houston Partnership official, has joined the management team of the City of Richmond as the Director of Economic Development. According to the City Manager Terri Vela, “Tobias will work to attract new capital investments and jobs, which will lay the foundation for increased prosRob Tobias perity and growth for the City of Richmond.” Tobias brings over 20 years of economic development experience that started at the Partnership, plus some Corporate America experience with Southwestern Bell and Conoco. He has worked for both large and small cities and has a strong track record of success at attracting industry, commercial and retail to each of the communities in which he has worked. Tobias noted that recent changes in the City’s governance structure has opened the door to begin to more effectively plan and prepare for the attraction of higher quality investment and higherskilled jobs to Richmond’s ETJ and Historic Downtown. “Richmond and other Fort Bend County communities and Economic Development organizations are already working in close collaboration, and if we do our job right, the City will realize significantly more property and sales taxes, as well as more tourism revenues over the next five years. After all, Richmond is the county seat of Fort Bend County, and the Brazos River is in its back yard. With these unique advantages, coupled with I-69, SH-99 and other public and private infrastructure at its doorstep, Richmond has many opportunities to explore.” Richmond officials are excited about having Tobias on the staff, as he has relationships from throughout the state that could add significant value to the City’s emerging economic development program. The 4B Corporation created by the City in 1995 has also been frugal and has reserves that will be leveraged to partner in the attraction of new investments and high quality, higher-paying jobs. Tobias noted that Richmond is blessed by its strategic location in Fort Bend County, having two local foundations in the City, and an emerging vision to build upon the City’s historic background, balanced with quality growth. Richmond is truly “where history meets opportunity.”

8 Simple Stressbusters By Henry S. Miller
G
ot stress? Stress is a part of a normal life that you can’t really avoid. The good news? You have more power than you realize to control stress before it prevents you from living the life you want to lead. Here are 8 simple stressbusters to help you:
4. Take a Break Outdoors
Take advantage of the healing power of fresh air and sunshine. Just five minutes outside on a balcony or terrace can be rejuvenating. If you have more time, 30 minutes of sunshine has proven positive benefits.
5. Do One Thing Today Take control of your time. Every day, do at least one simple thing you’ve been putting off: return a phone call, make a doctor’s appointment or file the paperwork piling up on your desk. Taking care of one nagging responsibility will energize you and improve your attitude! You might even find that completing one task inspires you to move on to the next one. At the end of each day, try planning your schedule for tomorrow using a calendar or day planner that works for you.
6. Check Your Posture 1. Breathe Slowly and Deeply Before you react to the next stressful event, first take three deep breaths and consciously release each breath slowly. If you have more time, try a relaxation technique, such as meditation or guided imagery, before deciding how to handle the situation.
2. Speak More Slowly If you feel overwhelmed at any time, deliberately slow down the pace of your speaking. You will appear less anxious and more in control of the situation. Stressed people tend to speak fast and breathlessly. If you slow down, you’ll find you can think more clearly and react more reasonably to stressful situations.
3. Drink Plenty of Water and Eat Small, Nutritious Snacks Fight dehydration and hunger — they can provoke aggressiveness and exacerbate feelings of anxiety and stress. Drink plenty of water and always have small and nutritious snacks available on hand, such as fruit, string cheese or a handful of nuts.
34
Hold your head and shoulders upright. Avoid slumping or stooping: bad posture leads to muscle tension, pain and increased stress. If you are behind a desk during the day, avoid repetitive strain injuries and sore muscles by making sure your workspace is ergonomic, and take five minutes every hour to walk around or stretch.
7. Reward Yourself after a Stressful Day At the end of the day, set aside any work concerns, housekeeping issues or family concerns for at least a few minutes. Allow yourself a brief period of time to fully relax before bedtime each day — even if it’s only taking a relaxing bath or spending 30 minutes with a good book. Remember, you need time to recharge. Don’t spend this time planning tomorrow or doing chores you didn’t get around to during the day. You’ll be much better prepared to face another stressful day if you give yourself a brief reward of some free time.
8. Practice Letting Go When your next inevitably stressful situation comes up, make a conscious choice not to become upset. Just let it go. Don’t waste your energy on situations where it is not deserved. Managing your anger is a proven stress reducer. There’s no way to avoid stress, but you can be proactive in managing it. Here’s wishing you a happy life with less stress!

Nutrition Labels Decoded
Tips for Interpreting Nutrition Facts Labels
T
ake a trip to the grocery store and you’ll encounter miles of aisles stocked with thousands of food products. Every product has a story to tell or better yet, sell. Information printed on packages is helpful but it’s often confusing and even a bit misleading. While lists of ingredients and the Nutrition Facts panel are there to help shoppers choose foods to fit their nutritional needs, it’s not always easy to interpret. Learning how to decode the jumble of numbers and percentages is the first step in shopping for healthier foods. “The best guide for making decisions affecting your diet is the nutrition facts panel, which is regulated by the FDA and for meats and poultry by the USDA,” said Carolyn O’Neil, registered dietitian and nutrition advisor for BestFoodFacts.org. “The Nutrition Facts panel lists all of the important specs, such as calories, fats, sodium, fiber, sugar and several key vitamins and minerals.”
36
Nutrition Label 101 Here are some of O’Neil’s tips on understanding nutrition labels, so you can be a more informed consumer and make healthier decisions for your family.
Always Note Serving Sizes While a food or beverage may seem like a good nutritional fit, the first thing to notice should always be the serving size. Watch out because if you read that a serving contains 100 calories, for instance, that may be for 8 ounces of a juice beverage and the container may hold 16 ounces.
MARCH 2014 l TO ADVERTISE: 281.690.4242 or www.absolutelybrazos.com
If looking to limit fat, sodium and sugar, pay close attention to these call outs on the label. Some foods might deliver more than your daily limit for sodium! Remember that trans fat should be avoided completely.
Look for the Good Stuff A healthy diet consists of vitamins and nutrients which nutrition labels also spell out. Go for foods that are good sources of the good guys – dietary fiber, vitamins A and C, calcium, iron and potassium.
Don’t Be Fooled by Healthy Looks While package design may illustrate people engaging in healthful activities, pretty farm scenes and adorned with “healthy” words, note that the FDA does not regulate the use of creative brand names. As always, it is the nutrition facts label where a consumer can see what’s really inside.
Trust Health Claims The FDA closely monitors the use of health claims on food packaging. So, if you see wording such as “heart healthy,” you can be confident the company had to meet nutrition criteria set by the FDA. Prepared with nutrition label knowhow, shoppers can put this valuable information to work to make food shopping easier on the next trip to supermarket. Visit www.BestFoodFacts.org for other tips. A LITTLE PIECE OF HISTORY

Rice Farming in Fort Bend
R
esidents of Fort Bend, especially the farmers, are fortunate. Combined with mild weather and rich soil, farmers profit from a wide variety of agriculture. Cotton, sorghum, corn and cattle to name a few provide more than $300 million in annual income for the county. Rice is a profitable commodity along the southern coastal areas of Texas and Fort Bend, encompassing ten counties, and accounts for thousands of jobs. Originating in the Pearl Valley region of China, the Chinese word for rice is the same as their word for food. Evidence dates rice domestication from 8,200 to 13,500 years ago. Along with corn, it is the second highest grain in worldwide production. The United States is the twentieth largest exporter with Texas ranking fifth in the states and Fort Bend tenth in the counties. There are more than forty thousand varieties. In the United States, a person consumes about twenty pounds of rice a year. It is a symbol of life and fertility, explaining why it is a tradition to throw at weddings.

Besides food, rice is used for making jewelry, art, pillows, laundry starch, paper and alcohol. The health benefits are substantial; rice contains thiamin, niacin and iron, is low in total fat, saturated fat and cholesterol, contains eight amino acids, is necessary for strong muscles, is sodium free and may help reduce heart disease and some cancers. Rice is considered an annual plant but can survive as a perennial for up to 30 years. It must grow in warm climates over 70 degrees, and planting begins in early March. Rice is grown for over 40 days in a row. Wet soil is the best for fast growth; therefore, irrigation is a must during Fort Bend’s dry season. John Miles Frost, a native Texan, was considered to be a trailblazer in rice production. He was a self-taught businessman, learning from Judge G.H. Shley of Richmond. He earned his room and board by working for the Judge and became a surveyor. John started his career working with his brother running the mercantile in downtown Richmond, also gaining fame through ranching and breeding Brahman cattle. In 1901, he began cultivating rice in Fort Bend between Clodine and Fulshear. Frost constructed a rice canal by damming river water to irrigate the crops. By 1910, this successful endeavor produced 80,000 bags of rice weighing between 175 to 210 pounds each. As word of his success spread through the area, farmers discovered rice could be planted on land

previously used for grazing, as well as a rotation crop. Rice canals were dug and production ensued. Fort Bend does not have a rainy season, so it was difficult and expensive to keep the rice fields irrigated. Weed and pest control were other complications, but rice did increase the economy. In 1914, The Houston Chronicle recognized Frost as president and originator of the Rice Belt Irrigation Company, the most complete irrigation system in the south. By 1924, 723 acres produced a harvest of 21,500 bushels annually. The ecosystem of the upper Texas Gulf Coast is enhanced by rice production. Resident, wintering and migrating waterfowl, shore birds and wetland wildlife species made these marshes a safe haven for animals to live and breed. The United States Department of Agriculture encourages rice production to supplement the wildlife habitat. Today, Fort Bend harvests 7,900 acres of land producing over 55 million pounds in a five year period. With so much to gain in the conservation of natural resources by growing rice, the benefits compliment health, nature and the economy.
