Mothers, Medicine and Mayo Every year it seems that the month of May cannot arrive soon enough. For those of us with children, May marks a huge milestone. Our kids are getting out of school making plans for the summer and best of all, Mother’s Day arrives. As a mother, this is absolutely one of my favorite days of the year. I still have the necklaces made of macaroni, the pot holders with tiny hand prints and the various objets d’ art my babies have made and presented very proudly to me on Mother’s Days through the years. Now that they have gotten older, and I actually receive “store bought” gifts – as Patti and Kassidi Kaminski. my Mawmaw would say – I miss the not-so-perfect clay animals and the somewhat lopsided pottery made by little hands. Truly, these are a mother’s treasures – so very special. Special absolutely describes the newest medical Institute to arrive in Fort Bend: Memorial Hermann’s IRONMAN Sports Medicine Institute. These highlyskilled physicians are experts in sports medicine, and as a mother of athletes, I am thrilled to have this level of specialized care – and rehabilitation – right in our neighborhood. There’s so much going on this month – right in our neighborhood. From Cinco de Mayo celebrations to Richmond’s Music Festival, check out our pages when making your plans this month. You’ll find something for everyone – right in our neighborhood – including some special ideas. Best-selling American author, educational reformer and mother Dorothy Canfield Fisher was a pioneer in Kolton and Patti Kaminski. shaping adult and children’s education in the early decades of the twentieth century. She said, “A mother is not a person to lean on but a person to make leaning unnecessary.” I believe Fisher summed up the most important job of being a mother with these words. Of course, I don’t mind a little leaning on one special day of the year! Happy Mother’s Day to all of our Brazos moms! Absolutely! yours,

“We are excited to welcome Memorial Hermann IRONMAN Sports Medicine Institute to the Fort Bend community,” said Malisha Patel, FACHE, vice president of operations for Memorial Hermann Sugar Land Hospital. “The integrated services provided by our affiliated physicians, trainers and Malisha Patel, FACHE multidisciplinary care team will offer preeminent, sport-specific care to athletes close to home.” “We believe the IRONMAN brand stands for the best rehabilitation care and provides pa- Walt Lowe, M.D.

tients with access to the best of the best experts in the sports medicine arena,” added Walt Lowe, M.D., chairman of orthopedic surgery at UTHealth Medical School and medical director of the Institute.

Elite Care for Athletes of All Ability Levels Like its three sister sites in the Texas Medical Center, Memorial City and The Woodlands, the newest Institute in Sugar Land delivers elite care to athletes of all ages and ability levels to help them prevent injury, recover from injury and improve their performance. Leading the care is a prestigious staff of affiliated UT Physicians who are fellowship-trained in orthopedic subspecialties and sports medicine. Many of them serve as team physicians for professional sports teams in Houston and Sugar Land, as well as for area public and private high schools. Vishal Shah, M.D., an affiliated orthopedic surgeon, is excited about the Institute’s high-level sports medicine coming to Fort Bend County as it enhances his ability to help athletes recover from injuries and optimize their sports performance. “The Memorial

Hermann IRONMAN Sports Medicine Institute in Sugar Land puts all of the tools that physicians need in one place – from the examination Vishal Shah, M.D. rooms to the rehabilitation unit to the sports performance training equipment,” said Dr. Shah. Highly trained affiliated physicians provide rapid injury diagnosis and treatment – both operative and nonoperative – required to help athletes return to their sport. With advanced training at the nation’s top sports medicine clinics, the Institute’s affiliated physicians have extensive experience in advanced orthopedic procedures such as ACL tears, rotator cuff injuries, minimally invasive joint replacement surgery and other orthopedic injuries dealing with inflammation, tears or fractures. “The new Institute is a state-of-theart facility with indoor running lanes and high-tech equipment utilized in rehabilitation and testing athletes of all levels,” said Erich Hartzog, PT, a board-certified sports clinical specialist, who serves as area manager of the Institute. “We offer sports nutrition counseling and human performance testing for high-level endurance athletes, and we participate in research related to ACL injuries.” Expanded space, including an indoor throwing area, provides athletes with the opportunity to participate in sport-specific rehabilitation. For example, if a baseball player is recover-

ing from a shoulder injury, progression to throwing a baseball might be part of the rehabilitation process.

Human Performance Services Provide an Edge Ambitious athletes who desire a competitive edge depend on the Institute’s human performance experts for help. This accomplished team of sports biomechanists, strength and conditioning specialists, exercise physiologists and sports dietitians uses performance testing and counseling to analyze and improve athletes’ biomechanics, training regimens and nutritional practices. Through individualized programs, athletes gain a winning formula to exercise and refuel more efficiently and compete at higher levels. The Institute offers a comprehensive suite of performance testing and improvement services. Many are sportspecific, and packages are available.

Training More Efficiently For field sport athletes, the VO2 max test determines peak oxygen usage and helps set heart rate zones. For runners and endurance athletes, the lactate threshold test uses a scientific approach to set pace and heart rate zones for improved training and competition. A basic biomechanical test can aid athletes in improving the mechanics of their sport. This test captures imbalances in walking, jumping, running, throwing and swinging patterns via video technology, showing movements from all sides. By examining the video

frame by frame, sports biomechanists target weaknesses that can lead to injury or that are causing pain. In a gait analysis, for example, patients are videotaped while running on a treadmill. Oftentimes, the source of an injury is different from the site of the pain. “When an athlete has an issue with throwing a baseball or cutting on the football field, we can observe them going through the motion to help see firsthand how the problem is affecting them,” said Dr. Shah. “That can help us make an accurate diagnosis. That type of replication is impossible in a conventional doctor’s office.”

Fueling Performance An often-overlooked component of improved sports performance is proper nutrition. Eating the right foods at the right times plays a critical role in providing strength, endurance and speed.

With our state-of-the-art facilities, leading-edge technology and expert staff all backed by Memorial Hermann’s extensive resources, I feel this will be the best Institute in the Houston area.

To that end, the Institute offers performance tests that measure body composition, resting metabolic rate and calories used when running or cycling. These tests assist the Institute’s sports dietitians in developing personalized nutritional plans essential for peak performance. Smart counseling from the Institute’s sports dietitians teaches athletes how to structure their meals through the day and how to get the most from workouts through best dietary practices. In addition, athletes learn to eat pre-competition meals that maximize energy while minimizing the risk of upset stomach.

These specialists understand that many athletes have limited time for their workouts, so they concentrate on working smart over working hard. They stress proper preparation techniques, such as stretching, and target any biomechanical or functional weaknesses identified in performance testing.

Fine-Tuning Workouts The Institute also offers strength and conditioning tailored to the specific sport of recreational and competitive athletes. Whether the goal is increased strength and power, improved cardiovascular conditioning, altered body composition or injury recovery, the Institute’s strength and conditioning specialists focus on fine-tuning techniques to help prevent injury and move athletes to higher performance levels.

– Erich Hartzog, PT

Comprehensive Sports Medicine Expertise The staff of the newest Institute is excited about bringing comprehensive sports medicine to Fort Bend County with specialty-trained physicians, therapists, strength and conditioning specialists and human performance experts, along with state-of-the-art equipment. “This new Institute means area residents can get the same top-notch care that the most elite professional athletes receive without wasting time in traffic trying to get into town,” said Dr. Shah. “With our state-of-the-art facilities, leading-edge technology and expert staff all backed by Memorial Hermann’s extensive resources, I feel this will be the best Institute in the Houston area,” Erich Hartzog, PT added Hartzog. High School HOT SHOT Meet Monica Pena

C

alvary Episcopal Preparatory in Richmond takes pride in educating the “whole child.” The school’s faculty and staff know that a well-rounded educational experience includes handson learning. Students are engaged in academics, sports and extracurricular activities on a regular basis, including Bible class, chapel three days a week, physical education, choir, theater arts, art, Spanish, library lessons and computer instruction. Seniors graduate fully prepared to take the next step in life. One senior who will be remembered even by the youngest students for her commitment to others and her selfless endeavors is Monica Pena. Monica has been a student at Calvary for 13 years, since kindergarten. She is a straight “A” student and a member of the student council, serving as a representative her freshman year and treasurer her junior and senior years. Monica was bestowed the “Amicus Generous” Award her junior year and has been involved in yearbook and journalism. She was also awarded a Youth in Philanthropy scholarship her junior year. Monica’s forte is art, and she has received numerous awards for her endeavors. As a participant at the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools (TAPPS) state competition, Monica placed second and fourth place in art, fifth place in poetry and seventh place in prose interpretation. She was awarded first place at the Fort Bend County Fair and third place at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo for her art.

Monica When asked why being a leader is fulfilling to her, Monica said, “I have the opportunity to help others be the best they can be. I love the look on their faces when they’ve done something incredible. Sharing a passion with other people not only confirms my commitment to creativity but allows me to learn from others as well.” One value that Monica lives by is altruism. “I believe what Maya Angelou said: ‘At the end of the day, people won’t remember what you said or did; they will remember how you made them feel.’ I love helping people with their dreams or lifting someone’s spirit. Helping people feel good makes me feel good.” Her favorite teacher is Renita Myers, her government teacher, homeroom teacher and the high school team leader. “She is in charge of everything high school related, and I appreciate that she takes personal time to accompany us to our events. Her smile lights up a room, and she always has a plan. As a teacher, she is incredible and keeps things interesting. As a homeroom teacher, she keeps her students

informed and upbeat, and as a team leader, she teaches them how to work together and really cares about all they do.” One thing Monica treasures the most about her high school experience is, “the family atmosphere. We’re all so close. We help and support each other, and we get things done and make a great team.” Monica attends Graeber Road Church of Christ and volunteers at the Beacon in Houston, where she helps provide hot meals to underserved areas and the homeless. She also is engaged at every school event possible. Monica has been on four separate mission trips to help the homeless in Houston. Monica will attend Wharton County Junior College in the fall and then the University of Houston and will major in industrial design. Congratulations on your commitment to success and generous heart Monica, and good luck as you continue to develop your undeniable talent for your future.

Headmaster Malcolm Smith, Monica Pena and art teacher Mary Jean DuVal.

The City of Richmond’s Wessendorff Park.

Historical Richmond’s First All-Day Music Festival The City of Richmond’s Wessendorff Park was created with an acoustically sound gazebo to satisfy musical tastes in a peaceful park setting. That gazebo will be tested with a free, all-day musical event presenting a variety of musical genres. Morton Street Music is back to introduce Concert on the Creek on Saturday May 21st from noon to 6 pm. Rob Quarles, himself a musician, has desired to produce a music festival in Historic Downtown Richmond for several years. Morton Street Music, LLC was created exclusively to produce and promote live, seasonal outdoor concerts and eventually an annual all-day music festival in Richmond. Quarles began with A Fall Friday Night last October, though the weather didn’t work with him. So, Concert on the Creek is now Morton Street Music’s inaugural event. Like last fall’s event, attendees can expect six bands and artists across a variety of genres, four food trucks, sno cones and an offering of vendors and craftsmen. Chairs, blankets and ice chests are welcome. Wessendorff Park, located on Preston Street between Fourth and Sixth streets just over the Railroad tracks, is near a variety of shopping. Contact Robert@mortonstreetmusic. com or visit www.concertonthecreek. com for more information.

Fort Bend Seniors is able to feed an abundance of seniors citizens in need each year with the help of La Cocina Restaurant and its owners Andres and Rachel Novoa.” Fort Bend Seniors Meals on Wheels provides more than 1,300 hot, nutritious, home-delivered meals to seniors who typically live alone and are unable to prepare their own meals. In addition, the organization offers older adults congregate meals from 11 site locations, transportation to and from the center, health screenings, recreational activities and other programs. “We are blessed to live in a community that is so giving,” said Andres Novoa. “Not only are we raising money needed to feed our seniors, but we are also reaching volunteers and creating awareness right here in our backyard as we help crush hunger among our elderly!” Event activities include a live band, live and silent auctions, raffle drawings, drink specials and great Tex-Mex cuisine. What Is a Skilled Nursing Facility? Those who have ever had a stroke or needed postoperative care have probably heard the term skilled nursing facility (SNF). Skilled nursing facilities offer a place for those who need short-term rehabilitation following a hospital stay or who may need long-term nursing supervision because of health issues or disabilities. They are licensed health care facilities inspected and regulated by the state’s Department of Health Services. Many patients sent to a SNF need 24 hour nursing care. Whether they require post-operative wound care or have intravenous medications that need to be dispensed and monitored, the SNF is designed to handle a wide array of services. Physical, occupational and speech therapy are an integral part of the healing process. A physical therapist works to rectify strength and balance issues. A speech therapist assists in re-

18

claiming the ability to communicate – especially after a stroke. And, an occupational therapist can help a patient become independent again. The goal is to restore all patients as quickly as possible to their highest level of function and independence. OakBend Medical Center has the only hospitalbased skilled nursing facility in Fort Bend County. Being attached to the hospital allows for a higher level of care 24 hours a day. Plus, access to a cardiac catherization laboratory, pharmaceuticals, laboratory and radiology services and most importantly, 24 hour emergency physician coverage. When seconds can make a difference between life and death, being in a hospital-based skilled nursing can save lives. Visit www.oakbendmedcenter.org or call 281-3413000 for more information about skilled nursing at OakBend Medical Center.

Be Fit | Be Healthy | Be Strong OsteoStrong’s Alternative Wellness In this economy, people need to make wise choices, and their health and quality of life is most important. Now is the time for alternative wellness. Through cutting-edge technology and a comfortable environment, OsteoStrong offers relief and results from a multitude of things, including osteopenia, osteoporosis, fibromyalgia, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s Disease and diabetes. The OsteoStrong system is a patented technology that triggers the adaptive responses that increase bone density and muscle strength naturally. The OsteoStrong system addresses a broad range of debilitating systems and speeds recovery time, allowing clients to more quickly resume their normal daily functions. It is safe and effective, leading to an improved quality of life. It seems scientists agree that just 10 minutes on the Power Plate, which involves movements performed on a vibrating surface, is the most efficient workout. The poses performed on the vibrating plate “fire up” muscles, so the entire body is working. For every second of working out on the Power Plate, muscles contract about 35 times, which increases the metabolic rate and the rate at which fat is burned. During a Pilates session, it is only 10 times per second. Many people are unwilling or unable to perform regular exercises and would greatly benefit from this new approach. OsteoStrong is a strength, fitness and wellness studio located at 1876 FM 359 in Richmond. Visit www.facebook.com/osteostrong/richmond for regular updates. oster Creek Veterinary strives to provide high-quality veterinary medicine and surgery in a familyfriendly atmosphere to the community, considering their clients as friends and patients as part of their family. The professional staff maintains continuing education beyond state requirements and supports the community with volunteer time and services. Foster Creek Veterinary has three doctors available: Dr. Michael Moore, Dr. Mark Buvinghausen and Dr. Megan Dunn. The team provides a variety of services from vaccinations to dentistry to microchipping. Vaccinations are very important for puppies, dogs, cats and kittens. Foster Creek Veterinary recommends bringing puppies and kittens in at approximately six, nine and 12 weeks of age. During these visits, Foster Creek Veterinary performs a comprehensive exam, administers necessary vaccines, deworms and checks for intestinal parasites. The staff will discuss important topics pertaining to a new kitten or puppy, such as nutrition, heartworm and flea prevention. They provide a complete puppy or kitten care kit to help with the new addition. As pets mature and reach age six, annual examinations change according to pets’ needs. At this stage, Foster Creek Veterinary encourages senior wellness blood work to ensure all internal organs are functioning properly and to detect any underlying disorders. Another important part of an animal’s health and wellbeing is routine dental care and hygiene. Oral disease can lead to systemic illness of a pet’s heart, liver, lungs and kidneys. Foster Creek Veterinary recommends routine dental cleanings, home dental care and regular checkups. For more information, call 832-3631227 or visit www.fcvethospital.com.

Beat the Heat with Pet Safety Tips that dogs’ feet can burn and blister. To prevent this, schedule walks for the morning or evening, when sidewalks are cooler, or purchase protective boots designed just for dogs. Practice smart snacking. After exercising and in between meals, a sensible snack can provide a boost of energy. Treats such as Natural Balance Dental Chews do double duty by giving a little help with oral care between brushing. These tasty treats encourage natural, healthy chewing to help reduce and remove tartar and plaque. Provide outdoor relief. The best spot for your pet to cool off in the yard is a shaded, grassy area. unny, warm days bring the welcome opportunity to change up your routine and spend more time outdoors with your beloved pets. However, soaring temperatures bring risks from heat and sun exposure, making your furry friends rely on you to help keep them healthy and safe. Make these warm-weather adjustments to keep your pets in top condition and ready to enjoy all the season has to offer. Keep them hydrated. Dehydration and heatstroke can be fatal to pets, so access to a clean water bowl both inside and outside is critical in the summertime. While you’re on the go, be sure to bring water for your pet in a suitable drinking container. Serve up healthy meals. Warmer weather invites opportunities, such as enticing picnic spreads, for pets to nab tasty treats. Protect your pets’ health by preventing them from ingesting food intended for humans, and opt instead for food and treats that fit their special needs and preferences. Never leave your pet in a parked car. Studies show that on a hot day, the temperature inside a car can reach more than 160 degrees in five minutes. Leaving the windows cracked for fresh air or parking in the shade does not prevent temperatures from soaring either. Leaving pets in the car “just for a minute” is never a good idea. Groom regularly. One of the best ways to keep a dog’s coat healthy and help prevent matting and skin irritation is regular grooming. The right grooming tool can dramatically reduce shedding by removing the undercoat and loose hair without sacrificing the healthy top coat. Provide skin protection. Just like humans, dogs can experience sunburn and even skin cancer. To prevent sunburn, apply sunscreen where hair is thin and skin lacks pigment – nose, ears and sensitive areas – every day your dog is outside. Avoid hot surfaces. Dogs’ pads may seem tough, but sidewalks, pavement and sand can get so hot in the summer

A LITTLE PIECE O F H I S T O RY

In the chase to overtake the powerful bull buffalo, portrayed in this painting by George Catlin, Native Americans sometimes had to gallop their horses five miles across the plains.

By Joan Frances

Images from The Story of America.

I

magine life 200 years ago. You are standing on a mountain, discerning the vast acres of land before you. The breeze caresses your face, and the sun warms the earth. The spaciousness is a sight to see – so peaceful and quiet, just the wind and free breath. A large herd of buffalo can be seen for miles, grazing innocently, such a regal, large and powerful animal. Suddenly, gunshots break the tranquility. The buffalo begin to run, and several fall. For the Native Americans and many early settlers, this was not an act of sport or for pleasure. The buffalo was a vital source of food, clothing and shelter for years. An estimated 60 million buffalo were present during the 1700s, flourishing from Canada to Mexico. There was never a shortage of food for the Native Americans. This animal, weighing up to 2,000 pounds, was not only their main diet, but virtually every portion was used for maintaining their lifestyle. Hides were used for clothing, footwear, bedding and shelter, as well as floors and sleeping mats. Sinew, a piece of tough fibrous tissue, was used for sewing and binding, and the bones were used as tools. The meat was eaten raw, some was cooked and other portions were dried as jerky. The choice cut was the hump roast, shared as a delicacy for special celebrations. Buffalo trails were used for travel by the Native Americans, explorers and pioneers because they were well packed and easy to follow. The buffalo, or “tatonka,” was the heart of Native American culture, and their future and was placed directly below the Great Spirit himself. When the Native Americans resisted the white settlers pouring into the west, the railroads and the army encouraged a mass slaughter of the buffalo in an effort to eradicate and drive out the Native Americans. Trains crossing the

plains charged passengers $10 to shoot the buffalo from the windows of the moving trains. Professional buffalo hunters shot and killed hundreds of these animals a day, keeping the tongues and hides and leaving the rest to the vultures and to rot on the prairie. Bleached bones littered the land and were later gathered and proved profitable for the railroads. Workers were paid to haul tons of the skeletal remains east, and then the bones were crushed for carbon and fertilizer. These hunters did more in five years to force the Native Americans out of the area than the army could have done in 50 years. By 1885, fewer than 1,000 buffalo remained. Buffalo in Fort Bend County lived and thrived along the Brazos River. Historical finds trace buffalo trails along the Brazos, and remains have been discovered near Richmond. Many of the roads used every day in Fort Bend County were once buffalo trails. When the Karankawa Native Americans inhabited the land along the river, notable warriors used bows, spears and firearms for procuring food. They lived on buffalo, fish and oysters. Buffalo were hunted in different ways. Before horseback, the tribe members encircled the herd and fired a large volley of arrows until they killed an adequate number of these massive animals. When horses were acquired, it became easier, stampeding herds over a cliff or driving animals into a natural trap. Thanks to the efforts of early pioneer ranchers, the population of the buffalo is replenished. Today, there are about 150,000 in North America. Spectators are still in awe over their immense size and calm nature. Tatonka will forever be a part of the history as one of the animals that shaped America’s future.
