Back to the Grind? Fall has finally fallen – at least on the calendar – and I for one, couldn’t be more grateful. Yes, we all love the lazy, hazy days of summer, but I confess that by the first of August , I’m ready to fall back into a somewhat normal – if not more hectic – routine. For many individuals, headaches are routine. I personally have a dear friend who has suffered from migraines for years. Patti Parish-Kaminski, Robert Earl Keen Now, with Houston Methodist Sugar Land and Lisa Fredrickson. Hospital’s new Headache Center, there is a team of qualified professionals in Fort Bend who can help, and they are helping make a huge difference in the lives of so many. State-of-the-art medical treatment close to home is what Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital is known for, and with their new center, they have once again hit the mark. One routine event my family and I look forward to each fall is the Fort Bend County Fair. This year marks the 78th anniversary of the Fair, and this legendary community event has it all: events, rides, live entertainment, shopping, a wine room and bar-be-que. This year, the Fair awarded 47 scholarships to Fort Bend youth from the proceeds of last year’s event. That’s something to be proud of! I’ll certainly be stopping by the Fair this year. Look for me – and complimentary copies of absolutely! Brazos – in the Grapes on the Brazos Wine Room in Building W. I hope to see you there! This past summer at absolutely! focus media has been anything but routine. After working with Michael and Lisa Fredrickson for over five years growing, building, defining our four award-winning, monthly community magazines, over the summer I purchased the company and now serve as the publisher. It’s an exciting time for us all as Michael and Lisa pursue other interests, and absolutely! focus media is poised for continued growth and success. In fact, we recently won seven national awards and one local award for our magazines, and the best is yet to come. Esteemed First Lady Jackie Kennedy said, “The only routine with me is no routine at all.” While I may crave some semblance of a routine, the First Lady’s words accurately describe my reality. My real routine is frankly, no routine at all. Oh, well – keeps things interesting. Kind of like buying four magazines!

Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital’s Headache Center:
Ending the Pain and Helping Patients Enjoy Life Again

auren Anderson has struggled with migraine headaches for most of her life. When her headaches struck, as they did again and again, she often missed out on the every-day joys of being a mom, like spending time with her daughter reading or working on a coloring book together. “I was at the point where I was getting migraines every single day,” Anderson said. “They take up so much of your life – you have no idea. I decided it was time to see a specialist.”

Today, Anderson is on a customized treatment plan that is minimizing her headaches and allowing her to enjoy life again. “It’s working,” she said. “I’m excited about the progress I’ve made.”

The Headache Center at Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital helps patients suffering from headaches of any kind including cluster headaches, migraines and tension headaches. With personalized, hands-on care, the center’s experts can help anyone who experiences recurring headache pain. “An individualized approach to headache care is a necessity because there is no blanket approach that works for
Eddie L. Patton Jr., M.D. conferring with Lauren Anderson. Photography by Nesossi Studios.
everyone,” said Maureen Lall, NP, the center’s neuroscience coordinator. “Every individual is different, and every patient requires a customized treatment plan that is tailored to his or her unique needs.” Migraines typically cause a throbbing pain on one side of the head. They can last for hours and are usually accompanied by extreme sensitivity to light and sound, along with nausea and/or vomiting. The discomfort is often so intense that the only relief is a dark and quiet place to rest and ride out the pain. But while patients are suffering, life around them keeps on going on – and they miss out.
Bringing Solace to Suffering Specialists with the Headache Center begin by discussing patients’ medical history as well as the possible factors triggering headaches. “Our first goal is to really listen to our patients and understand how headaches are impacting their lives,” said Dr. Eddie Patton Jr. “The more we know, the better we can address the problem and find solutions.” That means identifying all of the factors that may be contributing to headaches, such as diet, stress levels, family history and the patient’s work and home environment. A full physical exam follows. Building communication and trust is the key to unlocking answers for each patient. “From the moment I arrived to my appointment, the staff made me feel like family,” said Anderson. “Immediately, my doctor, Dr. Jeffrey Jackson, made me
feel like I could tell him anything. He was open and honest, and he explained everything in terms I could understand – what I call ‘real people talk’ – not with heavy medical jargon. It was a nice experience. Dr. Jackson has since retired from clinical practice, but I look forward to working with Dr. Eddie Patton, Jr. to continue my treatment plan.” Anderson also likes the ability to quickly and easily make an appointment to see a specialist. When she first came across Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital’s Headache Center online, she sent an email requesting more information. The following day, she received a call from the center, and two days later, she was in the doctor’s office. “The turnaround time to schedule an appointment happened in less than 48 hours, and the staff is very professional and compassionate,” Anderson said. “My mission is to provide personalized and compassionate neurological care utilizing the latest advances in medicine. I believe in respecting and honoring the individual while working as a team to achieve health and well-being.” - Carisa Liew, M.D. According to Lall, Anderson’s situation is not unique. All patients receive expedited access to the center’s world-class team of headache specialists, usually within five or fewer days. Additionally, there is no so-called “headache requirement” to call – no need to keep track of how many headaches you have a week or their intensity. The rule is simple, Lall said. “If headaches are bothering you, you should be seen by a specialist. If you are concerned, we are here to help.”
“My mission is to provide quality and compassionate neurological care to my patients. I strive to establish trust and good communication with patients and their families regarding care and treatment. I am committed to ensuring that I keep my patients at the forefront of advances in neurological treatments and technology.” - Eddie L. Patton Jr., M.D.
Treated by the Best “I have over 22 years of experience providing compassionate and comprehensive care, as well as specialized, evidence based treatment for adult neurological conditions and diseases. I treat all my patients with excellence, care, compassion, respect and integrity.” - Amitabh Shukla, M.D.
The Headache Center at Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital is staffed by six physicians, all of whom are board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. They specialize in identifying the causes of headaches and developing treatment plans that work. “The doctors at the Headache Center truly care about getting you out of your pain,” said Anderson, “but they also care about why you’re in the situation you’re in. They want to help you return to a normal lifestyle.” www.absolutelybrazos.com l SEPTEMBER 2014

“I have an in-depth understanding of the structure and function of the nervous system. I work with my patients to evaluate and formulate comprehensive diagnostic and treatment plans. My goal is to improve the quality of life for my patients.” - Irfan Lalani, M.D. With more than 22 years of experience providing comprehensive and specialized care, Dr. Amitabh Shukla said he treats all of his patients with “excellence, care, compassion, respect and integrity.” It’s a sentiment that runs throughout the Headache Center’s team. “My goal is to provide superior care to my patients,” said Dr. Irfan Lalani. “I work with my patients to evaluate and formulate comprehensive diagnostic and treatment plans. My goal is to improve the quality of life for my patients." “My mission is the service of my patients through the complexity that is the field of neurology while delivering quality care in a patient oriented environment. I strive to achieve open communication with my patients in an effort to work as a team to develop treatment plans, all the while keeping them updated on the latest advances in treatment and care.” - Larry Tran, M.D. The treatment options at the Headache Center include lifestyle and dietary counseling; stress and medication management; infusion therapy and Botox treatments, which are used for chronic migraines. “The Headache Center is just part of the comprehensive neuroscience services that Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital brings to Fort Bend and surrounding areas,” said Dr. Rajesh Bindal, a neurosurgeon who serves as the hospital’s neuroscience medical director. “Our community benefits from having this type of expert care close to home along with other neuroscience services such as stroke, spine, epilepsy, memory disorders, movement disorders, etc.” To schedule an appointment with the specialists at Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital’s Headache Center, call 281276-8999 or email headachecenter@houstonmethodist.org.
“My goal is to provide superior care to my patients. I am in a profession known for constantly advancing technology, and I’m always at the forefront of these advances. I provide each patient with a full understanding of treatment options, with the goal of achieving the highest quality of life with the least amount of risk.” - M. Faisal Khan, M.D., D, ABSM

The Varieties of Headaches
H
eadaches can come and go with no warning and no clear cause. Other times, they can be a symptom of another disease or condition. Knowing the symptoms of different types of headaches can help you get the appropriate treatment.
Tension Headache Your headache might be due to tension if the pain is dull and achy. Tension headaches are also usually accompanied by a sore neck and can often be treated with over-the-counter pain medications.
Migraine A migraine is characterized by throbbing, severe pain that lasts from four to 72 hours. The pain can also be accompanied by nausea, vomiting and sensitivity to light and sound. If you feel the symptoms of a migraine coming on, rest in a quiet, dark room. A hot or cold compress on the forehead can help, as can trying to sleep. If home remedies don’t work, talk to your physician about other non-drug therapies or prescription medications.
Chronic Headache If you experience headaches more than 14 days in a month, you might have chronic headaches. They can feel moderate to severe, and they may be a sign of an underlying condition.
Rebound Headache Sometimes, the solution to a headache can make them worse. If you take pain medication for headaches often, and the headache returns, you might be experiencing a rebound headache. The only way to stop the cycle of rebound headaches is to discontinue the use of that particular medication.
Cluster Headache A cluster headache is a rare condition that affects fewer than one percent of adults. It is characterized by a sharp, severe pain that is often only on one side of the head. It is very painful, but lasts a short time — about 45 to 90 minutes.

kickoff parade, turkey legs, carnival rides and rodeo action are all reasons to anticipate the 78th Annual Fort Bend County Fair and Rodeo. The iconic event runs September 26th to October 5th at the Fort Bend County Fairgrounds allowing families and friends to enjoy a hometown fair packed with big time fun. “Our fair represents many traditions from our youth that make us want to come back and enjoy it with our families today,” said 2014 Fort Bend County Fair President Vickie Todd Autrey. “While we have many people who have attended our fair, we would like to invite everyone who may not have had the opportunity to come out. We truly have something for everyone to enjoy.” From wine tastings at the Grapes on the Brazos wine room to lawn mower races in the arena, the fair’s schedule is packed with a wide range of entertainment. The barbecue cook-off will have grill masters creating savory creations, and aspiring artists will debut their work at the art auction. Best of all, the fun is close to home for Fort Bend County residents.
The Fort Bend County Fair is committed to helping youth achieve their educational goals. Forty-two $3,000 scholarships and five Queen Scholarships were awarded this year. For the first time in the Fort Bend County Fair’s 77 year history, the 2013 four auctions

totaled over $1,000,000. Hence, this year’s theme is Trails of Yesterday Leading to Tomorrow’s Dreams. “This is what the Fort Bend County Fair is all about. It’s about our youth; it’s about our future,” boasted President Autrey. “We try to better people; they are our future leaders.” The fair’s musical headliners will have people refusing to miss a day. “We are thrilled with this year’s line up! We found a great balance bringing in legendary favorites and hot Texas music acts. It is a country music lover’s dream,” said Susan Sillavan, Fort Bend County Fair Manager. “Some of these artists we’ve been trying to sign since 2013, and finally this year it has all come together.” Kicking off the fair is the veteran of Texas music chart topper Kevin Fowler. Fowler is known for his high energy and crowd-pleasing sounds only he can perform. “I’m looking forward to it. Fort Bend County, get ready. We are heading your way,” said Fowler. Texas native and Aggie alum Granger Smith will take the stage with his talented twist on traditional country music on Saturday, September 27th. Go Tejano Day is set for Sunday, September 29th. The Grammy Award winning sensation La Mafia will headline the festivities. The Houston-based band is internationally known for their Latin sounds and true traditional licks. Also performing is the pride of south Texas, Los Palominos, whose Tejano sounds will thrill the crowd. During the Fair’s second weekend, Steve Wariner will bring his guitar, song and vocal talents. Wariner has been producing country hits since the late 70s and has drawn a lifelong fan base. On Saturday, October 4th, Oklahoma natives Jason Boland & The Stragglers hit the stage. Closing out the Fair on Sunday, October 5th is legendary singer Moe Bandy bringing his memorable, classic country hits to life for what is sure to be

a spectacular performance. Returning to the Fort Bend County Fair on Wednesday, October 1st is a match roping between two gigantic, multi-world champion cowboys, Cody Ohl and Fred Whitfield. Eight-time world champion Joe Beaver will call the action. All three men have had their share of magical moments in the arena and countless accolades bestowed upon them for their calf roping talents. Ohl and Whitfield squared off in a Challenge of Champions match roping at the 2004 Fort Bend County Fair. Ohl won the bragging rights that night and leads in other matches between the two, but Whitfield edges him out in career Gold Buckles. The 2013 Fort Bend County Fair Bull Riding Champion Cody Teel.

“I don’t care if we are pitching washers, when you have those three names involved, you don’t want to lose,” said Ohl about competing in the match roping in the county where he grew up. Whitfield, winner of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA) calf-roping title in 2012, is no stranger to Fort Bend County. “It could be the 10th round at the National Finals Rodeo (NFR) or a game at the carnival, we are all going to be going for it,” Whitfield said. The competition is sure to be a fan favorite and will draw a large crowd to the Fort Bend County Fair. Visit www.fortbendcountyfair.com for a full schedule of events or ticket information.

Now, Morales has expanded his focus to shine a spotlight on prostate cancer awareness, education and risk reduction. After being diagnosed with prostate cancer in May, Morales underwent a successful surgery. He is now cancer-free and on a mission to spread awareness about the second most common cancer among men – topped only by skin cancer. Prostate cancer does not run in Morales’ family, so the diagnosis came as a surprise. “It was a blessed finding so that it could be addressed in its early stages,” Morales said. “I was fortunate that my journey was a short one.” Morales joins the more than two million men in the United States who count themselves as prostate cancer survivors. “I feel good, especially since a pathology report came back showing I am clear of cancer! Based on my progression, I should be back to normal in a few months per the urologist,” Morales explained. In an effort to spread awareness, Morales has joined other leaders across the country, including Congressman Pete Olson, who are requesting that the White House be lit blue, the color symbolizing prostate cancer awareness during September, National Prostate Cancer Awareness Month. Smiling in the Face of Tragedy By M.G. Angulo
O
n May 31st, 2013, Mary Moore Sullivan’s world changed. For an excruciating moment, it stopped, and getting it revolving again was no easy feat. Amid the scores of news reports that flooded local media, Sullivan learned one of her four children, 24 year-old Anne Sullivan, died along with three other fire fighters in what the Houston Fire Department called the deadliest fire in the 118 years of the department’s history. Anne, a lively woman from Sugar Land who dreamed of being a fire fighter, had only been on the job for about a month before the fatal blaze. The news of her death was shared across the nation and hit hard for many family members, friends and supporters in Fort Bend County and beyond. “I miss her so much,” Sullivan said. “She was my daughter and my best friend. She is missed by so many other people as well – those who knew her and those who didn’t know her but knew her story.” Despite the deep and heavy loss eating away at her, Sullivan knew she had to continue living and putting one foot in front of the other. The typical tasks that filled her days were still there waiting to be completed, so Sullivan steeled herself against the pain and decided to keep moving forward – including returning to her dentist for a followup visit.
Mary Moore Sullivan Photo by Nesossi Studios
Two days prior to Anne’s death, Sullivan had a routine checkup with her dentist Dr. Samuel E. Cress who owns a practice in Sugar Land. Anne’s passing, however, put a hold on Sullivan returning for her follow-up appointment. Several months later, when Sullivan decided to finally return to Dr. Cress, she was still mourning the loss of her daughter but doggedly determined to keep living. “I have three other wonderful children I needed to be a parent to,” Sullivan said. Unbeknownst to her, this wasn’t going to be a typical followup visit. In fact, this appointment proved to be an important milestone to Sullivan’s road to recovery because Dr. Cress offered Sullivan the Elite Smile. Elite Smile is essentially a high-quality porcelain restoration procedure that can customize a person’s smile. Stained, cracked, crooked, worn and decaying teeth can be transformed into a dazzling natural-looking Hollywood smile. “Dr. Cress told me, ‘There’s not a lot I can do for you – I can’t bring your daughter back, and I can’t take away your grief – but I can give you a beautiful smile,’” Sullivan said. Sullivan, a woman who loves to laugh, smile and talk, admitted she was self-conscious about her teeth because of their deteriorating state. She was missing a tooth, another was dead, and she battled chronic pain and decay. “And I’m one of those people who brushes, flosses and keeps my regular dentist appointments,” Sullivan said. “I just have bad teeth.” After two painless and simple Elite Smile procedures, Sullivan said she had another reason to continue to push forward. “After Anne’s death, I received cards from people I knew and people I didn’t know,” Sullivan said. “I got letters from people who Anne treated as an EMT who wanted me to know how Anne impacted their lives.” Just like those cards, Dr. Cress’ offer is one that reminds Sullivan to keep living. “Our service men and women, both at home and abroad, are our heroes,” said Dr. Cress. “I can’t imagine a greater sacrifice than what Mary has endured in the loss of a child in the line of service. My goal was in some small way to help give Mary, a beautiful, vibrant woman, back her smile.” “It was a huge gesture,” Sullivan said. “This was a kind thing for him to do, and I love my new chops. What’s really amazing is that Dr. Cress has only been my dentist for a year,” Sullivan added. “It’s not like I had been a patient of his for 20 years or something. He just heard about my loss and wanted to help in the only way he knew how.” Dr. Cress’ gift wasn’t just about having a more captivating smile, though, Sullivan said. “What he did for me is helping me go on,” she said. “His gift was a reminder that I can’t give up on things now, that I have to continue living. To have someone be that nice to me means so much, and now that I have this beautiful smile, I’m trying to smile more.”

High School HOT SHOT Meet Hina Uddin
F
oster High School is home to approximately 1,500 students, and senior Hina Uddin is one of them. Academically challenging and fulfilling, this Texas recognized school has guided Hina to a path of success for the future. She has excelled in the arts, as well as focusing on acting and debate. With so many possibilities, Hina is looking forward to her final year of high school to be the most memorable. Hina moved to Lamar Consolidated Independent School District in fifth grade with her mom, Tanveer Vaid, and sisters, Shirin and Hiba. She has been an actress all of her life participating in productions such as The Wizard of Oz, You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown and Annie Get Your Gun. Since her freshman year, Hina has participated in Lincoln-Douglas debate, foreign extemporaneous speaking and oratory. When asked why she enjoys interpretation events, Hina replied, “Debate is fulfilling because it teaches someone to think on their feet, to answer a question that will make the most impact.” Hina is the debate captain this year, as well as last year, and teaches novice students theory and rebuttal techniques that help them at the 15 debate tournaments they compete in throughout the school year. Hina believes that, “Being able to communicate is so difficult today. With social media, face-
Hina
to-face conversation in an intelligent and open environment is not as common and practiced as 10 years ago.” Through her experience in tournaments and social interaction with teachers and friends, Hina is a leader in communication. For the past four years, Hina has been a religious teacher for youth at Masjid Al-Aqsa and Masjid Hamza. She has also worked with the donation collection team and as a carnival and fair volunteer at the church. She has assisted the Rosenberg Rotary Club at the Fort Bend County Fair and Rosenberg nursing home. In the summer of 2013, Hina interned at Katy Visual and Performing Arts Center as an assistant director for The Pale Pink Dragon. This summer, she played Fiona in Shrek, The Musical. Hina has been a singer all of her life and enjoys painting, contemporary music and dancing. Hina also speaks four languages: English, Gujurati, Urdu and Hindi. In a class of over 350 seniors, Hina is in the top 10 percent academically. She is a member of the National Honor Society and Student Council. As a junior, Hina placed second at the 4A University Interscholastic League (UIL) State Competition in Informative Extemporaneous Speaking and first at the UIL District
for Informative Speaking and LincolnDouglas Debate. Berry Good Morning Smoothie
A Smoothie a Day
I
am a big fan of smoothies for breakfast and snacks. I have even gone as far as to do a smoothie cleanse, mostly because I still can’t commit to juicing and felt I needed a reset. It is the best way to get the most nutrition in one glass. Smoothies can be the best energy lift and often replaces the need for a sweet treat or caffeine boost in the afternoon when our bodies are craving protein and carbs. I may get made fun of with my green goop sometimes, but I cannot rave enough about how these delicious little smoothies set my day off right. I have been asked how I make smoothies, and when I go into, “Add a little of this and a little of that,” I am countered with, “No, a real recipe, not pie in the sky throw it all in the blender.” Let’s take a moment to talk blenders. I love the magic bullet because it is an all-in-one compact cup that you take with you. But, it can only blend so much. I am alright with that, but I recommend a high performance blender. I confess I got sticker shock when I started shopping for one. Do they really have to be so expensive? It took me a year to commit to buying a Vitamix. In the end, a high performance blender offers you more options for your smoothies, as well as other things like salad dressings, soups, nut butters, etc. It makes a difference when you are adding veggies and oats to your smoothies creating a perfectly smooth smoothie. My kids will drink just about everything because they don’t know it’s in there. Well, the green color gives it away, but maybe a blindfold for the first sip would help the picky ones. Here are a few of my favorites, but remember that making it your own is the key to loving smoothies. Play with the recipes to perfect them to your taste.
• 1/2 chopped kale • 1/2 cup frozen blueberries • 1/2 cup frozen strawberries • 4-5 baby carrots
• 2 scoops Pea Protein Powder (I like Kenzen Vital Balance) • 1 cup organic unsweetened vanilla almond milk
Pineapple Mango Smoothie • 1 scoop of Jay Robb’s Vanilla Egg White Protein or 1/2 cup plain Greek yogurt • 1/2 cup frozen pineapple • 1/4 cup fresh spinach
• 1/2 cup frozen mangoes • 1 cup organic unsweetened vanilla coconut milk • 1 teaspoon ground chia seeds
Tropical Kale Smoothie • 1 cup chopped fresh kale • 1 cup organic unsweetened vanilla coconut milk
• 1/2 cup frozen mangoes • 1/2 cup organic strawberries • 2 scoops Pea Protein Powder
Banana Peanut Butter Smoothie • 1 cup fresh spinach • 1 ripe banana • 1 tablespoon organic peanut butter • 1/4 cup organic oats • 1 cup organic unsweetened vanilla almond milk
• 1 teaspoon organic flax meal • 4-5 ice cubes • 1 scoop of Jay Robb’s Vanilla Egg White Protein or 1/2 cup plain Greek yogurt
For smoothies, place all ingredients in blender, and blend on low for 30 seconds. Move slowly to high until mixture is completely smooth. Enjoy!

2015 GMC YUKON DENALI
T
he 2015 GMC Yukon Denali is an all-new version of GM’s near-luxury full-size SUV. This new Yukon has a more powerful engine that gets better fuel economy than last year’s model, as well as all of the technology bells and whistles that you would expect. It’s a vehicle that Texans have been thirsting for, and it’s set the bar much higher than the competition. If you need to haul the entire soccer team to the game or all of the grandkids to Splashtown, this new Yukon is for you. Back in 2008, when gas prices reached $4 a gallon, full-size SUV owners started bailing out of their behemoths, and automakers started making plans to remove them from their lineup. The panic subsided when
40
gas prices eventually floated downward; however, in the meantime, most full-size SUVs remained stuck in time. General Motors has beaten all of their competitors to the punch by bringing out 2015 full-size true body-on-frame SUVs based on their all-new pickup platform. The GMC Yukon offers more luxury than its Chevy cousin, the Tahoe, without the hefty price tag of its cousin, the Cadillac Escalade. The 2015 GMC Yukon Denali interior comes standard with premium, leather seats and gorgeous Java Burl poplar genuine wood inlays. Access to the third row is a breeze thanks to the second-row power-fold and tumble bucket seats. And now, the third-row seats fold flat thanks to the push of a button. The premium Bose comes standard, and if you want to keep the back row passengers quiet, opt for the Blu-Ray entertainment system with a nine-inch LED screen. Power for the new Yukon Denali comes from the largest of GM’s all-new EcoTec3 lineup

of engines, the 420 hp, 6.2 liter V-8. It’s a monster of an engine. But due to technology that deactivates cylinders based on demand, the engine still gets respectable fuel economy with 15 mpg in the city and 21 mpg on the highway in 2WD configuration and 14 city/21 highway with 4WD. The suspension is controlled by the Magnetic Ride Control System that makes constant adjustments to smooth out the road ahead. If you need that Texas-sized luxury SUV that can get you just about anywhere, the new GMC Yukon Denali is a must see. It has set the latest standard for quiet elegance that will get you noticed by the sophisticated eye. Follow Steve Kursur’s reviews at KursarOnCars.blogspot.com.

Fort Bend Cares Grants Over $160,000 to 22 Area Charities The numbers are big. Over 20,000 disadvantaged children and youth in Fort Bend County will be helped in some way through $160,110 in grants to 22 area non-profits. Fort Bend Cares assembled the charities, volunteers and key sponsors for its annual grant reception on Monday, June 9th at Silver Eagle Distributors in Rosenberg to give out the awards. Everyone was on hand to celebrate Fort Bend Cares’ work the last 10 years in the community, ultimately granting just over $1.2 million since inception. The organization’s thorough grants process still remains at a unique grass-roots level, engaging almost 40 community volunteers. Grants Committee Chairperson Robert Coffman said, “The committee did a lot of research and had to make many tough decisions. They are diligent so as to ensure their recommendations to the Board of Trustees have been examined carefully and thoughtfully.” Some of the local non-profits that received grants included Pooh’s Panda Special Needs Academy for summer camp and childcare for children with special needs and their siblings and Knowledge First Empowerment Center for its drop-out prevention program and GED prep classes for those who have already dropped out of school. The Rosenberg Railroad Museum was awarded the Founders Grant, now in its second year. The grant is named after cofounders Dr. Robert McClendon and Jim Rice. It will help the museum provide free educational programming and field trips for Title 1 schools in Fort Bend. “So many valuable organizations do so much important work in Fort Bend County assisting the children, youth and families that may need help, and ultimately strengthening our commu-

nity as a whole,” said Fort Bend Cares Executive Director Angie Wierzbicki. Board Chairperson Walt White added, “We are excited to be able to support these dedicated charities by helping to bridge the gap. We couldn’t do it without our business sponsors, individual donors and volunteers. And we can’t wait to increase the support to the hard-working non-profits next year.” Fort Bend Cares raises money for the grants through a variety of events and individual contributions. Its signature event, “Road Trip,” is scheduled for Saturday, February 7th, 2015 at Fluor in Sugar Land and brings in the most funds. The organization is looking for sponsors and volunteers for this event and other activities. To get involved, contact Wierzbicki at 832-8192005 or angie@fortbendcares.org. Ladybugs Spread Wings of Care to Richmond Healthcare Center
Ladybugs attending the event at the Richmond Healthcare Center included Dr. Eugenia Blomstrom, Milly Jones, Dee Dee Blomstrom, Velvete Rojubokan and Vicki Latham.
The Ladybugs recently helped to spread joy to patrons in hospice, retirement and general healthcare at the Richmond Healthcare Center in Fort Bend. The group provided fun games and prizes, sang songs and brought each patron fresh-baked pastries and chocolates, Mardi Gras beads, magazines, toiletries and other items to help brighten their day.
The Ladybugs, a social/civic group in existence since 2007, flutters to local area facilities to offer encouragement and motivation and lots of hugs and warm smiles, while helping the patrons participate in various activities or entertainment that they provide. Their efforts to spread good cheer and joy let individuals in healthcare facilities know that they are being thought about. The Ladybugs are now in the process of collecting teddy bears to distribute to handicapped patrons at local area facilities at Christmastime. Last year’s initiative was a huge success, and the group starts collecting bears during the summer. To donate new or gently used teddy bears, contact Ladybugs’ Coordinator Vicki Latham at vmlatham@yahoo.com for information on where to drop off teddy bear donations. For more information about becoming a Ladybug and volunteering, contact vmlatham@yahoo.com or request membership through meetup.com.

allowing it to become a prosperous trade center for the area around Needville. Working in the cotton fields for many hours in the hot summer sun was grueling and exhausting for the farmers; they were paid one dollar for every 100 pounds they could pick. Because of its central location and easy access to the railroad, Beasley opened the doors to mobility for its citizens. They could travel to Richmond and even farther south to the big city of Houston to get away. Besides the railroad, transportation was mostly horse drawn, and the dirt roads were difficult to travel when it rained. Muddy paths caused havoc for the residents who needed to travel on foot to work, but life was good for this small town. Families raised cattle, sheep, horses and cotton. As a result of the railroad, The Stern and Stern Land Company of Kansas City arrived in 1910 and began to promote and sell land through auction in Beasley as a supply and shipping point for settlers. This encouraged population growth, and by 1914, Beasley had 325 residents. Downtown consisted of a bank, a hotel, two churches, a lumber supplier, two cotton gins, three general stores and a telephone service. By the 1920s, a movie house and filling station were built. Schools began to prosper and later merged with Lamar Consolidated ISD and remain united today. The downtown area became a popular spot for citizens to converge and visit with one another, sharing old and new stories. The “Sit and Spit Club”

consisted of older men who talked and spit their tobacco, while younger members engaged in the details of a narrative. Reflections of the Chisholm Trail and the conflicts that early settlers encountered kept the audience wellentertained. With no television, radio or Internet, this weekly gathering brought the town together and bonded friendships that lasted a lifetime. Beasley was incorporated in 1970. Today, Beasley remains small and intimate with a population of approximately 649 people. Vintage buildings are still in the downtown area. Cotton fields and gins are prevalent and line the roads as travelers drive through the neighborhoods. Back in 1994, Beasley celebrated its 100 year anniversary, and reflections of the past transpired once again. For a moment, the city took a step back to reflect upon simpler times and what life is really all about, reaffirming once again that Fort Bend has it all: growth, tradition and history. ort Bend County was established in 1837. Harris County was founded in 1836. Both communities strived to encourage growth in commerce and agriculture. Famous men named the areas and became leaders in society. Fort Bend was named for a blockhouse at the bend of the Brazos River by a group of colonists from Stephen F. Austin’s original 300. Harris County was named after John Richardson Harris, an early settler of the area. Geographically, these combined areas are one of the most successful, profitable regions in the country. Both counties boast culturally diversified cities rich in tradition and history. One city in Fort Bend with an intriguing past is Beasley. Located 11 miles southwest of Richmond on Loop 540 at 4th Street, this quaint city originated on the Southern Pacific Railroad route. In 1894, Cecil Aquilla Beasley, a ticket agent for the Cecil Beasley. railroad and later a banker, founded this area and named it Dyer for Isabel Dyer, the woman he later married. Because another town was already named Dyer, the municipal was renamed Beasley. The post office opened May 13, 1898, and commerce began. As the railroad grew, so did Beasley. Cotton was the town’s staple export
