n just a couple of weeks, Thailand will celebrate their most revered and funnest holiday: Songkran. You can read online or ask around about why water and baby powder is randomly thrown about, but, needless to say, it is basically about relaxing and having pure unadulterated fun! The look on people’s face when they experience it for the first time is priceless!

If you find a place to stay dry and can read this in peace, you will find many great articles of interest. Ms. Hathaway reveals a lot about herself, and I personally cannot wait to see her in Catwoman’s costume. If she doesn’t get your mouth watering, the article on the new set of 2011 Porsche Cayennes most definitely will. The 500 horsepower Cayenne Turbo is a beast. We toured Pullman Pattaya Asiawan hotel, and it is a fantastic resort right on the beach, and their dinner buffets will have you wishing you will never leave. If you’re in Bangkok, I cannot recommend the Hansar hotel enough. It is one of the finest hotels I’ve ever visited. And if you’re in the Hua Hin area, hot air ballooning over the vineyards at dawn is a beautiful treat for you and your loved ones. It’s an experience you will never forget. If you’re afraid of flying, get a relaxing massage to get the tension out at one of the Oasis Spas located around the country.

21

I highly recommend a plastic bag for anything you don’t want to get wet if you dare step out your door during Songkran!

SONGKRAN – THE WATER FESTIVAL ON THE BEACH & PHUKET BIKE WEEK 2011

ongkran Thai New Year rituals and ceremonies highlight several traditional Thai cultural values. The spirit of giving and sharing and promoting community spirit are important elements of Songkran festivities.

ne of the best places to experience Songkran is in Chiang Mai, where it is celebrated on a grand scale with a flavor uniquely and entirely its own, attracting visitors from far and wide. This year, Songkran Thai New Year festivities scheduled for April 12-15 will be held at temples, in the vicinity of the city’s gates and around the city moat.

Visitors to Phuket are invited to join local residents in Thai New Year merit-making activities and experience up close and personal the colorful local culture highlighting traditional Thai ways as well as contemporary pop culture.

Devout Buddhists visit the temple for merit-making and to listen to sermons. Lustral water is sprinkled on sacred Buddha images, such as the Phra Puttha Sihing image, and also poured over the hands of monks in a gesture of reverence. Donations are also made to the temple. Enjoy traditional Thai cultural performances held in the temple ground.

The tropical paradise of Phuket, well-known for hosting some of the best parties on the island, offers a cosmopolitan flavor to Songkran Thai New Year celebrations. Gear up for some festive fun at the Soi Bangla Midnight Songkran as well as at JungCeylon, billed as the “international shopping and leisure destination,” overlooking Patong Beach.

One of the highlights of the festival is the ‘Songkran Beauty Queen Procession’ that takes place on Songkran Day itself – April 13. Meanwhile, many other events leading up to the main attraction are spread over several days and it is here that the visitor gets to see various aspects of Chiang Mai first hand – its culture, cuisine, and its beautiful arts and crafts.

A

mong Hollywood’s ever hot-and-cold crowd of 20-something-year-old performers, Anne Hathaway is one of most well-rounded actresses in the bunch, and her versatility shines through in her wide-ranging demographic appeal. Once pegged as a family-friendly actress for her roles in The Princess Diaries films, she’s kept the kids on her side with Ella Enchanted and Alice in Wonderland, won the mainstream crowd over with breezy entertainment in Get Smart and Bride Wars and made Oscar stand up and take notice with her performances in Rachel Getting Married and Brokeback Mountain. And people took notice in a very different way when she bared her skin in Love and Other Drugs. For someone who once considered becoming a nun, the lovely Anne Hathaway is quite a liberated lady. An interest in paintings in childhood familiarized her with nudes, and since she considers acting to be an art form, she doesn’t say no to taking it all off on film. In a curious twist, she has more reservations about posing for a temperature-rising magazine spread, because she feels that lacks artistic value. Anne Hathaway’s high artistic standards also extend to her nightlife, where she likes to seek out the best in music and dance. For this, she relies on her faithful crew of gay pals to take her out to the latest and greatest artistic dance clubs.

AMONG HOLLYWOOD’S EVER HOT-AND-COLD CROWD OF 20-SOMETHING-YEAR-OLD PERFORMERS, ANNE HATHAWAY IS ONE OF MOST WELL-ROUNDED ACTRESSES IN THE BUNCH, AND HER VERSATILITY SHINES THROUGH.

Anne Hathaway likes the simple things when it comes to dating. That means dressing comfortably, watching some good art, and just sharing some solid romantic chemistry. She felt a lot of this with Raffaello Follieri, a real estate guru who was her companion for four years. Early on, it was bliss and they enjoyed a rule of never spending more than two weeks apart, but things crumbled when he was implicated in 2008 in a multi-million dollar fraud case involving his charitable organization. Though Anne Hathaway was not directly related to any criminal activities, the realization that her boyfriend was a suspected criminal did not sit well with her. She did heal, though, and is now involved with fellow New York born actor Adam Shulman. There was a time when Anne Hathaway was seen by critics and audiences as the flavor of the month for wholesome entertainment. She can thank the Disneyfunded Princess Diaries films for painting her with that

22

A B S O L U T E T H A I A P R I L / M AY 2 011

brush. While these family films did jump-start her career, they have not come to define her. Through her own efforts, Anne Hathaway increased her stock with the movie-going masses with the one-two punch of Brokeback Mountain and her Oscar-nominated turn in Rachel Getting Married, where her propensity for playing cowboy games with Jake Gyllenhaal and coping with the effects of alcoholism showed that she meant business. Luckily for Anne Hathaway, the new label of “serious actress” hasn’t taken away her right to be versatile or to have a good time on screen. As moviegoers, we can believe her in anything, whether she’s spying it up with Steve Carell in Get Smart, surviving Meryl Streep’s fashion insanity in The Devil Wears Prada, or getting wacky with Johnny Depp in Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland. Her star power in Hollywood was fully legitimized when she was asked to host the 2011 Oscars along with James Franco. But as actress first and a movie star second, Anne Hathaway’s ultimate goal is just to make quality films, and if things keep going her way, she will have plenty of opportunities to do exactly that. Early on, Anne Hathaway’s core religious values in Catholicism were guiding her toward a future filled with religious faith rather than Hollywood fame. Though her mother, Kate McCauley, was an actress, and Anne Hathaway enjoyed playing dress-up and imagining herself as various creative characters, her first career ambition was to become a nun. This career path changed abruptly at 15 when she realized that her religious background would put her at odds with her brother, who was gay (how is that for irony). Based on that, Anne Hathaway chose acting instead, and movie audiences would come to be all the better for it. At New Jersey’s Millburn High School, Anne Hathaway got her acting feet wet in various school productions, including Once Upon a Mattress, which saw her nominated for a Paper Mill Playhouse Rising Star Award in the category of Best Performance by a High School Actress. She also enjoyed the added bonus of training at New York’s highly respected Barrow Group Theater Company. Anne Hathaway’s acting highs were matched by the lows of a difficult battle with depression. Through her own strength, she eventually conquered the self-loathing and anxiety that came from her darker moments, and pushed forward to begin the career that she would come to love.

Anne Hathaway Stars in the Princess Diaries and Brokeback Mountain Mere days after performing with her high school chorus at Carnegie Hall, Anne Hathaway was cast in the new FOX series, Get Real, in 1999. The series was a bust and she went on to enroll at New York University, but an audition came her way for 2001’s The Princess Diaries. According to director Garry Marshall, she wiped out during the audition and immediately got the part. Anne Hathaway remembers the story differently, but irregardless, she won the role of an unpopular girl who learns that she is, in fact, royalty. The plot connected well with its royalty-seeking tween audience, making the Disney film a hit and spawning an equallysuccessful sequel in 2004. While Anne Hathaway was not outwardly disappointed that the Princess Diaries films – and to a lesser degree 2004’s Ella Enchanted – had branded her as an actress for family movies, she wanted to show that she could do more. As such, she began to play totally against type, first as a drug and sex-chasing teen in the steamy Havoc, which never saw a theatrical release but picked up a significant following for obvious reasons (read: nudity) on DVD. Anne Hathaway had more success in the serious role of a struggling wife to cowboy Jake Gyllenhaal in Brokeback Mountain, which was instrumental in getting her cast opposite her screen hero, Meryl Streep, in The Devil Wears Prada. While the role of assistant to a fashion boss from hell didn’t win her any goodwill from Vogue editor Anna Wintour (who inspired the film), the rest of Hollywood, including Meryl Streep, was impressed with her skills.

“I GOT INTO THIS BUSINESS TO BE AN ACTRESS, TO SCARE MYSELF, AND FORCE MYSELF INTO A PLACE OUTSIDE OF MY COMFORT ZONE. I HAVE NOTHING AGAINST THE PRINCESS DIARIES – BUT IT HAS BEEN A BRICK WALL AT TIMES FOR MY CAREER.”

Anne Hathaway Stars in Get Smart and Rachel Getting Married After gamely playing Jane Austen in 2007’s Becoming Jane, Anne Hathaway bought a ticket aboard the Hollywood remake train for the big-screen reboot of the beloved TV series, Get Smart. As Agent 99, the no-nonsense special agent who is paired up with the bumbling Maxwell Smart (Steve Carell), she prevented world destruction and got to give The Rock a boot to the head. The film was a wellreceived summer blockbuster and by the fall, all eyes were on Anne Hathaway’s next movie, Rachel Getting Married. As an emotionally fractured recovering alcoholic in town for her sister’s wedding, Anne Hathaway showed a side of her acting that was honest and gutsy. The critical kudos for her performance were followed by Hathaway’s first Oscar nomination for Best Actress.

“QUITE FRANKLY, I DIDN’T BECOME AN ACTOR TO BECOME A MOVIE STAR. I HAVE NEVER DREAMED ABOUT BEING THE MOST FAMOUS PERSON ON THE PLANET. I JUST WANT TO DO REALLY GOOD WORK.”

Recently, she also took on the daunting task of hosting the Oscars (alongside James Franco), a shrewd career move for one of Hollywood’s hottest A-listers. The gig marked Hathaway’s first appearance on stage at the Oscars, but if life keeps going her way, it certainly will not be her last.

After battling with Kate Hudson in the 2009 wedding comedy Bride Wars, Anne Hathaway took on a slate of films. In March 2010, Hathaway entered the weird world of Tim Burton to play The White Queen to Johnny Depp’s The Mad Hatter in Alice in Wonderland and then had a reunion with her Princess Diaries director, Gary Marshall, for Valentine’s Day, which featured the ensemble cast of Ashton Kutcher, Patrick Dempsey, Julia Roberts, Bradley Cooper, and Jennifer Garner.

Next up for her is Catwoman in director Christopher Nolan’s third Batman film, The Dark Knight Rises, with Christian Bale and Morgan Freeman.

Anne Hathaway Gets Naked (And Co-Hosts the Oscars) Anne Hathaway’s sex appeal soared sky-high in 2011 when the Viagra-themed, skin-filled drama Love and Other Drugs opposite Jake Gyllenhaal landed her a Golden Globe nomination for Best Performance. She also made No. 9 on AskMen’s Top 99 Most Desirable Women 2011.

to ensure a guest’s comfort is there. Free wi-fi for staying connected, large LCD televisions (seemingly with a channel for every available language) to watch from the comfort of a large sofa or your bed; and newly laid marble tile bathrooms with separate shower and bathtub areas along with soft cotton robes and slippers. Each guests’ room is garnished with a bouquet of flowers that are immediately noticeable because of their sweet smell. Next to that is a complimentary bowl of exotic Thai fruits.

or visitors to this wonderful and accommodating resort, it really is the perfect getaway. First, after landing at the Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport, the ride to the hotel is only ninety minutes. This gives you and your loved ones a chance to sit back and watch Pattaya pass by and see what this immensely popular city looks like. Then, as palm trees and shops selling bikinis come into view, you swing into the hotel’s parking lot, greeted by a Pullman “Welcomer,” have your luggage taken care of, breeze through check-in, get shown to your room, and then, well, it is up to you.

At this point it might be extremely tempting to lie down and take a nap. With king sized beds that make you feel as if you are sleeping on a fluffy cloud, it would be understandable. However, this hotel was designed so that practically every

room looks out over the ocean. So if someone in your family (especially a youngster) looks out the window and sees the hotel’s private beach (and who doesn’t look out the window as soon as they check into a room?) there will be no stopping them. And when you look out the window yourself and see the beautiful white sand, the warm and calm ocean or the cool and large pool, along with the shaded, covered and padded beach beds, you will be ready too. Plenty of time to sleep later! You might not have noticed it when you checked in, but Pullman has to have one of the most beautiful lobbies ever created. White and very toned down colours were selected so that no matter how crazy, wet, hot, or light headed you are feeling, the cool lobby instantly pulls you back to reality and immediately calms you down. With friendly staff opening all of the doors and ready to answer any questions, you are free to pick any of the large, overstuffed chairs, sofas or chaise lounges to relax and cool of in. Beautiful stark white sheet dividers hang from the ceiling, and act as strategically placed buffers that offer privacy and a sense of coziness. The Pullman Pattaya Aisawan lobby was not designed to just be used for checking in or out, it was designed as a place where patrons could meet up, order a drink from the Chill Out Bar (the perfect name) and either find a private section or catch up on email at the bar’s Connectivity Lounge.

WITH THREE POOLS TO CHOOSE FROM, PLUS THE BEAUTIFUL OCEAN, PLAN ON SPENDING SOME TIME GETTING WET AND TANNED.

Back on the beach, after relaxing and recharging, there are a number of activities to choose from, or you can just stay in your recliner and decide that that is enough excitement for you. But if do choose to become adventurous there are many activities to choose from: windsurfing, parasailing, waterskiing, and hiring boats for day trips to Koh Larn, a beautiful island off the coast of Pattaya. Guests can also try outdoor yoga or aqua aerobic workouts, or take in a game of beach volleyball. Sightseeing is best done on the bicycles available for rent. As well, there are numerous tours available, and Pullman can arrange any of them for you. And Pattaya’s famous nightlife is just a quick ride down the road! For those who have yet to experience one of Thailand’s greatest gifts, spa treatments, now is the perfect opportunity. As mentioned above, the resort was renovated just over a year ago, but only touch-ups were needed to the spa because the original design, architecture, themes and basic ambiance had already been perfectly done. The Aisawan Spa is truly a world unto itself. Treatment areas are set within a stylish arraignment of Salas and pavilions with some set surrounded by lush gardens, others are set next to the sea or pool, or, if you prefer, special VIP private treatment rooms are available. Each setting guarantees full restoration

in style and comfort. Experienced and trained staff offer vigorous traditional Thai massages or a range of relaxing aromatherapy treatments. Specialized treatments such as the ‘four-hands massage’ and a range of other invigorating treatments can bring much-needed relief to tense muscles. Do not leave Pullman, or Thailand for that matter, without experiencing a spa treatment from the best place in the world to get one. And do not worry about the little ones, Pullman offers a Kid’s Room where children can be watched over while they play with an unlimited amount of toys. With three pools to choose from, plus the beautiful ocean, plan on spending some time getting wet and tanned. The beautifully designed and decorated main pool is large and has a gorgeous meandering floral shape, and it is the central focal point of the hotel and the key feature that brings all the elements of the resort’s Beach Club together. The resort has done an excellent job of integrating the pools into the resort’s architecture and not treating them as afterthoughts. The Infinity Pool offers a cozier, more private ambiance as the pool is set off from the rest of the resort by lush vegetation. There are also poolside villas that offer direct access into the water from the room’s terrace.

When thirst or hunger strike while either in a pool or on the beach, roving staff are there to take your order. The chic and hip Beach Bar is practically sitting on the beach and is stocked with every type of drink imaginable. Just name your poison and the experienced bar staff will whip it up within a few seconds. A staff member will bring the drinks to you and your group, and, if you are also hungry, salads, sandwiches, grilled items and ice-cream can be ordered as well. There is also a VIP lounge named Sunset Lounge for Aisawan Club Room and Suite guests; this VIP status also allows for private entrance into the Lanai Pool Access and Aisawan Loft. When dinner time rolls around, take a look at the gargantuan buffet laid out at the contemporary Beach Club Restaurant before deciding where to eat. Each night offers a different theme, but whatever night it is you will more than likely choose not to go anywhere else to eat. The sheer amount and variety of international favorites: Russian, Japanese, Thai, American and anything else you can imagine will be available. With the price for this feast ranging around the

SILAVADEE POOL SPA RESORT The ultimate luxury hideaway W O R D S : Dimitri Waring

It’s as luxurious as it is discreet, and you’ll feel cocooned in a deluxe private world as soon as you step over its threshold. The name comes directly from Thai, and translates as “beautiful rock.” It’s a bit of an understatement as it’s not just the rock formations that are beautiful but also the surrounding jungle and private beach.

ith such a large number of quality hotels on Samui, confusion can easily set in when it comes to choosing a quality resort for the discerning holidaymaker. You could easily spend your entire vacation time at any of these top-notch places, enjoying each of them. If, however, you’re looking for a first-class resort that’s also a hideaway, the choice thankfully begins to narrow, and if it’s your desire to be tucked away from the most populated areas, then you’re left with a far smaller array.

Situated on the west coast of Samui just a 5 minute drive to Lamai and a 15 minute drive to Chaweng, Silavadee is conveniently located to all the islands amenities. Just a few hundred meters off the ring road, you enter another realm where escapism is indulged in private seclusion.

Centrally located between Lamai and Chaweng, right at the end of a secluded headland, you’ll find a resort that has a growing reputation as a rather special place to stay – Silavadee Pool Spa Resort.

ABSOLUTE THAI SILAVADEE POOL SPA RESORT

The resort caters for those who seek to get away from the stresses and strains of modern society; it’s certainly not interested in pulling in crowds. It’s a discreet yet completely friendly place where you can just relax and take pleasure in being away from the world. Buzzy, boisterous holidays aren’t for everyone, and if you’re staying at Silavadee, you’re assured of a pleasing amount of tranquillity and space. The resort believes in its guests enjoying the maximum of comfort combined with the best amenities possible, with a fairly small number of rooms. There are just 19 pool villas and 36 deluxe rooms, all of which have been designed with a ‘back to nature’ appeal. Each of the villa pools comes with something rarely seen, even on Samui – a special massage bed where over a dozen water jets will stimulate and invigorate the entire body. All the accommodation is first class. You’ll find beautifully appointed rooms which are far removed from traditionally sterile hotel designs. Accommodation comes with flat-screen TVs and a there’s a wide choice of films to watch – Silavadee has a large library of DVDs.

THE RESORT CATERS FOR THOSE WHO SEEK TO GET AWAY FROM THE STRESSES AND STRAINS OF MODERN SOCIETY; IT’S CERTAINLY NOT INTERESTED IN PULLING IN CROWDS. IT’S A DISCREET YET COMPLETELY FRIENDLY PLACE WHERE

But there’s also something else too, which you may not be prepared for. It’s perhaps the ultimate in hospitality; Silavadee offers its guests a butler service. If you’re in a foreign country – even for the umpteenth time – you’ll find it very reassuring if you can find out quickly where the good restaurants are, which are the best tours and how to arrange a private barbecue or someone to baby-sit your children. Your butler will have the solutions to all these questions and will be an invaluable help in maximizing your holiday enjoyment. This kind of service goes way beyond the traditional information desk provided by hotels – it’s a lot more personal and the butler will be able to think of solutions that are particularly appropriate for you. Your butler, incidentally, is available 24 hours a day to help you.

YOU CAN JUST RELAX AND TAKE PLEASURE IN BEING AWAY FROM THE WORLD.

As you can see this resort is one where you’re treated as a unique human being rather than just the occupant of a room. Silavadee’s owners believe very much in making your stay special. Many guests feel at the end of the day that the resort is a kind of home away from home; if they’ve been out on a trip, then they look forward to getting back to Silavadee. In fact, the family who built the resort wanted the guests to experience a higher level of personal attention than usual and aimed for it to be much the same as you would receive if you were invited into a Thai home. One of the main reasons to come and stay on an island like Samui is of course the beach. You’re spoiled for choice

when it comes to taking a dip in the sea or spending time sunbathing on beaches that seem to have stepped out of a collection of exotic postcards. However, some beaches do pull an extra punch when it comes to pleasing visitors, and if you’re at Silavadee you’ll immediately see why. The resort is secluded, and due to the natural formation of the land the beach at the resort turns out to be entirely private. Nobody will ever disturb you here. There aren’t even any passers-by; it’s as if the sands have remained undiscovered. Perhaps that’s why over many years, the locals have dubbed it ‘Secret Beach.’ You may well feel quite loath to go and explore the other coastlines Samui has to offer. And in case you’re not a great fan of the sea, then you have another superb option: the resort’s swimming pool. There’s nothing easier or more satisfying than to spend the day here.

THE RESORT’S RESTAURANT, SIMPLY KNOWN AS THE HEIGHT OFFERS FIRST CLASS DINING. IF YOU NEED A BREAK FROM TROPICAL TEMPERATURES YOU’LL ENJOY THE AIR-CONDITIONED DINING ROOMS, BUT TO BE REALLY CLOSE TO NATURE YOU MIGHT WELL WANT TO DINE AT TERRACES OVERLOOKING THE SEA OR PRIVATE TABLES HALF-HIDDEN BY GRANITE ROCKS.

Sun loungers offer plenty of shade and there are drinks and snacks a-plenty if you get hungry or thirsty. The location couldn’t be better: from the pool you can look out at the superb view of the sea and horizon. You’d be forgiven for thinking you could just float off into the distance as the pool has an infinity edge. It makes for some great photographs, too. When the sun goes down, the resort’s restaurant, simply known as The Height offers first class dining. You can choose between indoors and outdoors; if you need a break from tropical temperatures you’ll enjoy the air-conditioned dining rooms, but to be really close to nature you might well want to dine at terraces overlooking the sea or private tables half-hidden by granite rocks. Any of the tables is a great place to enjoy a cocktail or long drink as the sun goes down. The Height offers international and traditional Thai cuisine, and can also arrange private barbecues and caters for wedding receptions. Silavadee doesn’t just pamper your taste buds but your whole body; thanks to its Wellness Spa. From the moment you step over its threshold, you enter a special sanctum where you’ll receive first-class treatments. For massages you’ll find an array of Thai and modern Western treatments, all of which aim to both soothe and invigorate you. If you’d like something truly special, then opt for one of the packages – they’re pure bliss. To take just one example, the Silavadee Journey, which lasts 2 hours, combines both Hawaiian and Indian massage techniques. It’s particularly recommended

VIETNAM Where the past is always present W O R D S : Peter Holthusen

Add to this, distant memories of TV footage and press photos depicting the horrors of the Vietnam War, and you have high contrast. One month later, exhausted after covering the country from top to bottom on trains, dragon boats and clapped-out buses, the pattern was still frustratingly absent. Yet my trip was packed with images that could only be Vietnamese.

y arrival in Hanoi threw back in my face all the visual clichés that I had amassed over the years. Fresh from my home base in London where the Vietnamese community keeps a high profile, from Tran Anh Hung’s film ‘Cyclo’, from Duong Thu Huong’s novels, and distinctly less fresh after a flight that clearly revealed seemingly idyllic paddy-fields and waterways far below, I had a jumble of preconceptions desperate to find a pattern.

ABSOLUTE THAI VIETNAM

Where else would you see an immaculate old gentleman being chauffeur-driven in an ancient 2CV, resprayed in silver? Or a woman farmer with pink plastic curlers peeping out from under a coolie hat? A man taking his pig for an evening walk? Or the quiet acceptance of a Buddhist monk recounting the years of tragedy? And landscape after sweeping landscape that leaves your camera lens on high alert? Since I was a young man, I have been fascinated by Vietnam. My mental impression was of a country of deep impenetrable jungle and forests, but also of flat agricultural lands where people plough and sow using very traditional methods; elsewhere, massive river deltas fringed with luxuriant vegetation and people in “Chinaman’s hats” fishing from tiny boats and odd-shaped junks.

WHERE ELSE WOULD YOU SEE AN IMMACULATE OLD GENTLEMAN BEING CHAUFFEUR-DRIVEN IN AN ANCIENT 2CV, RESPRAYED IN SILVER? OR A WOMAN FARMER WITH PINK PLASTIC CURLERS PEEPING OUT FROM UNDER

All of these are correct images of Vietnam. I saw the deep jungle and forest in the centre of the country near Hué and My Son; the flat agricultural land in the Red River Delta in the north near Hanoi; the luxuriant vegetation in the massive river delta in the south, where the Mekong flows into the South China Sea, and the fishermen in the Mekong, Ha Long Bay and almost everywhere where there is water. But Vietnam is also a crowded country, and in places quite polluted. Its main highways are choked with traffic and run through a long, continuous semi-urban sprawl rather than open countryside.

A COOLIE HAT? OR THE QUIET ACCEPTANCE OF A BUDDHIST MONK RECOUNTING THE YEARS OF TRAGEDY?

It is also a place scarred by its history, which you have to know (at least in outline) if you are to understand what you see. In brief, after centuries of Chinese rule it became a French colony from about the late nineteenth century. The French faced an increasingly violent insurgency, in particular from the Viet Minh forces led by the indefatigable Ho Chi Minh. Most visitors to Hanoi generally make their way to the mausoleum of Ho Chi Minh, the preserved body still recognisable as the man who is on all the banknotes and commemorated in numerous statues. Reverential behaviour is expected. We visited the Presidential Palace and the notorious Hoa Lo Prison – also known to American POW’s as the “Hanoi Hilton” – where American pilots, among them US Air Force Captain Pete Peterson and US Senator John McCain were shot down during what the Vietnamese call the “American War” were housed until their release in 1973. Perhaps as a symbol of the new Vietnam, half of the prison has been demolished to make way for a luxury, Western-style hotel. Vietnam. The propaganda in the guidebook was not all anti-American, as I had expected, but anti-French. The French guillotine – complete with its label “Head Cutting Machine” – was still there. The Vietnamese seemed pleased that relations with the Americans are now “normalised”, and actually boasted about the number of American veterans who had come back to the country as tourists. We had some marvellous meals in Vietnam. Not surprisingly, Vietnamese cuisine is very similar to Chinese cuisine, but I felt more care was taken in the preparation and cooking. A feature is “parcels” of food wrapped in rice paper with delicious sauces. We had two meals in private houses and in each case I got the impression that the entire extended family – mother, daughters, aunts, grandparents, cousins etc. – had spent days preparing this feast for the expected party of Western travellers. Doubtless what we paid made it worth their while, but these were exceptional meals. It was while driving to Ha Long Bay across the Red River Delta that I saw the flat rice fields I had expected. What was surprising was the number of people working in the fields; the fact that they were ploughing with oxen, and the absence of machinery. We saw two women moving water from an irrigation ditch to a paddy field with nothing more than a bucket on a rope. Surely the Egyptians had primitive Archimedes screws to perform this same operation 2,000 years ago? Vietnam, unlike China, is self-sufficient in food and even exports their produce. Surely there is now scope for greater mechanisation? Hanoi has a wonderful “old quarter” which miraculously survived the daily bombing by American planes. We toured it by pedicab, the three-wheeled bicycle taxis they have in Vietnamese cities, but it has a slightly threatening feel to it, and I wouldn’t particularly like to visit the city alone in the evening. This was not the only place in Vietnam that I had this feeling. It is still a Third World country. From Hanoi we flew to Hué in central Vietnam. Hué was once the capital of the country and has some spectacular buildings, including the elaborate tombs of the Emperors of Vietnam and a set of State Rooms (called “The Citadel”) that were once the State apartments of the Imperial Palace.

ABSOLUTE THAI VIETNAM

We flew from Da Nang to HCMC in the south and then drove southwest to the Mekong Delta. Our riverside hotel in Can Tho was a bit noisy and the restaurant a little crowded. Some in our party complained. The next day our guide gently chided them, with a clear sub-text that they were a bunch of spoiled Westerners and would they please observe the contrast of the hotel with the living standards of the locals. A very fair point. He spoke excellent English, though he had never left Vietnam. His father had been a translator for the Americans and hence the whole family spoke good English, but his father had been forced to go to a “re-education camp” after the Vietcong victory. He could not get a passport. It was not as bad a history as that of our guide in Cambodia though – his father had been massacred by the Khmer Rouge when he was seven.

This was, in terms of architectural style and scale, similar to the Forbidden City in Beijing, but is in much worse condition due to destruction in the 1968 Tet Offensive. Our journey took us south by coach from Hue to Hoi An, passing through Da Nang. I remember reading about Da Nang during the Vietnam War: known as “Red Beach”, it was a major landing point for the American troops. Fragments of debris from these times still lie, as sinister reminders, on the beach and at the airport. Hoi An is heavily marketed by the Vietnam Tourism Board as a traditional Vietnamese town with traditional buildings. However, despite the interesting buildings and setting, it has a similar atmosphere of a town preserved, indeed preserved for tourists.

In the Mekong Delta most things move by water. We visited a floating market where boatloads of melons, pumpkins and a variety of obscure vegetables were being traded. We also visited a small factory on the river bank where all the stages in making coconut candy, from cutting open the coconuts to wrapping the candy, were being undertaken under one roof. In fact the building had no walls – simply pillars and a roof.

MOST VISITORS TO HANOI GENERALLY MAKE THEIR WAY TO THE MAUSOLEUM OF HO CHI MINH, THE PRESERVED BODY STILL RECOGNISABLE AS THE MAN WHO IS ON ALL THE BANKNOTES AND COMMEMORATED IN NUMEROUS STATUES.

From the delta, we drove back to HCMC and stayed at the now legendary Rex Hotel in District 1, on the road that was

once the Rue Catinet. Some things have evidently not changed. The area around the Rue Catinet continues to be something of a red light district and the parade of young women entering and leaving the hotels in the area is quite a sight. Our guide blamed the reputation of the area on the Americans, implying that they had somehow forced all these girls into prostitution, and to “smoke cigarettes”, which seemed to him an equivalent crime. However, my reading of ‘The Quiet American’ suggested that the Rue Catinet had this reputation long before the Americans arrived in such numbers.

But is it really a Communist country? Hardly. There is no welfare State and at least in HCMC there is an open capitalist economy, though not as aggressive as in China. Ho Chi Minh is revered as a nationalist who unified the country. His communism explained – at least by our guide – as due to the fact that Russia rather than America responded to his pleas for help to fight the French. Vietnam appears to have a residue of state-controlled industries from the worst of the post-unification Communist era and it has not attracted foreign investment on anything like the scale of China.

THE AREA AROUND THE RUE CATINET CONTINUES TO

From time to time you are reminded that Vietnam is a one party dictatorship. The police are ferocious. We observed them dealing with a man who had parked his motorbike on a forbidden part of the pavement. It seemed to take a great pack of different policemen to haul him off, with some minor violence. But in some ways Vietnam seemed a more selfquestioning society than China. In China the guides appear to be reciting text learned to heart from a Government programme. The guides in Vietnam were much more honest about the mistakes of the regime. They were quite amusing on the subject of the “coupon” period in the 1970’s, when everything was rationed and people had to queue for days to get the essentials of life, only to find that everything had run out when they reached the front of the queue.

BE SOMETHING OF A RED LIGHT DISTRICT AND THE PARADE OF YOUNG WOMEN ENTERING AND LEAVING THE HOTELS IN THE AREA IS QUITE A SIGHT.

But the sense of equality is there, together with an extraordinary capacity for survival. While they rediscover their identity, buried for decades under the dust of war and Communist dogma, people like you and me can only observe without fully comprehending. It makes a unique destination; annoying, exhilarating, always stimulating and ever enigmatic.

ABSOLUTE THAI BALLOONING THAILAND

FLOATING OVER The Hua Hin Hills Vineyard

H

ot air balloons, vineyards and Champagne breakfasts make for a very comfortable partnership. This concept was recently introduced in Hua Hin by Chris Stafford of Stafford Edison International’s Classic Events who was previously the founding General Manager of Anantara Hua Hin. He has one of the best understandings of Hua Hin as a destination which he describes as the “Deauville of Asia.” His vision was that the Hua Hin Ballooning Festival should not just be a mass appeal one day wonder, rather it should be on going throughout the year and become part of the annual calendar. For events to be successful and sustainable they need like thinking partners, so he selected Hua Hin Hills Vineyard as his wine partner and Rest Detail Hotel Hua Hin as the stay partner and base camp for the festival; and Flying Media Co Limited as the hot air balloon operator.

THE VISION WAS THAT THE HUA HIN BALLOONING FESTIVAL SHOULD NOT JUST BE A MASS APPEAL ONE DAY WONDER, RATHER IT SHOULD BE ON GOING THROUGHOUT THE YEAR.

Hua Hin Hills Vineyard, a former elephant corral covering 600 acres of which 160 are planted with vines, is located 35kms inland from Hua Hin. Its location was chosen for two reasons, its sandy soil produces a lighter fruiter wine that is ideal for drinking with spicy food in a hot climate. Secondly, the weather; the area has limited rainfall and there is a significant difference in the temperature during the day and night. “We have planted Shiraz vines grafted onto Brazilian root stock. The rainfall pattern here makes the harvest one month later than in the Khao Yai region,” explains Kim Wachtveitl, Director of Business Development, Siam Winery. The hotel partner is the beach-front Rest Detail Hotel Hua Hin with 56 rooms villas and pavilions directly looking out onto the Gulf of Siam, and is just a 5 minute drive from Hua Hin Airport. They offer the perfect respite from the real world.

The partnership is completed by hot air balloon operators Flying Media Co Limited which is owned by a group of Thai investors which include Terapat Tunsukrat who manages the company. I recently met up with Terapat to discover how he got into the hot air balloon business and the challenges he had to overcome to gain government certification to operate flights such as these. “From having a secure job as a Senior Vice President of the Asset Management Division with a bank, ” says Terapat, “to being a hot air balloon operator in Thailand was a big bold step that I took 12 years ago during the economic crisis.” “Having left the banking sector I worked as a financial consultant,” he says. “One day while I was stuck in traffic; I looked up in the sky and saw a plane which took me back to my childhood interest in flying and attending a class at the Civil Aviation Training Center Thailand before going to university. That was one of my best years, so my thoughts floated in the direction of some form of a flying business. Your first hot air balloon flight is something you never forget. I then started remembering mine in Switzerland; I had my solution, start a hot air balloon business.” “Having defined my goal,” he says, “I quickly realized

“ IT’S NOT ACCEPTABLE TO CUT UP BED SHEETS AND SEW THEM TOGETHER, THE BALLOON SKIN ITSELF MUST COME FROM A CERTIFIED FACTORY; OUR PILOTS ARE REQUIRED TO HAVE A COMMERCIAL PILOTS LICENSE TO FLY THE BALLOON AND, AS A COMPANY, WE ARE REQUIRED TO HAVE INSURANCE COVERAGE THAT COMPLIES WITH THE DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL AVIATION THAILAND’S CRITERIA.”

achieving it wasn’t going to be easy as Thailand was not known for hot air ballooning. What aviation regulations would apply? I then spent a year learning about hot air ballooning before I decided to launch the business. It took another two years until I had gained the necessary licenses to fly my first hot air balloon in Thailand; then another five to create Thai awareness.” “To become a hot air balloon operator to operate these flights in Hua Hua,” he continues, “we had to obtain an Air Operators License from the Department of Transport to prove our level of professional competence and comply with global safety standards. It’s not acceptable to cut up bed sheets and sew them together, the balloon skin itself must come from a certified factory; our pilots are required to have a commercial pilots license to fly the balloon and, as a company, we are required to have insurance coverage that complies with the Department of Civil Aviation Thailand’s criteria. Hot air balloons take off from a field rather than an airport; accordingly we are required to have written

permission from the landowner to do so. A hot air balloon pilot has a dual role; the operations of his flight while entertaining and taking care of the safety of his passengers.” “Before every flight our pilots, who are American with many years of safe flying experience,” he says, “perform standard pre-departure checks. Passengers have the confidence of knowing that there is a safe hand in the glove on the control leaver.” Knowing that we are in safe hands – lets go flying. Take off was scheduled for 6am as the cool morning air is the perfect time of day for balloon flying plus Hua Hin has spectacular not to be missed sunrises. I was driven by limo from my hotel to the vineyard launch site. By the time I arrived at the Vineyard, the crew will have rolled out the balloon and inflated it with air at outdoor temperature to let it take shape, later this is replaced by hot air to lift the balloon into the sky. The basket takes just five passengers plus the professional Balloon Pilot so it’s a very personal and intimate travel experience. Stirrup holes have been set in the side of the basket to make it easy to climb aboard. I could feel the heat above my head as the pilot pulled down on the red handle releasing a flame from the twin burners sending hot air into the balloon making it float gently upwards. The sensation was as comfortable as taking an elevator. Within seconds I was seeing the world from a different perspective, I could identify the different plots of vines on the vineyard. We climbed to 4,000 feet with crystal clear silence floating onwards over the provinces famous pineapple plantation. Having crossed the beach line we floated past two historic former royal palaces. Phra Ram Ratchaniwert Palace was built for King Rama V who was frequently sick during the rainy season, particularly in September. The two-storey building, with two domes and a brown tiled roof from China, was styled on Kaiser Wilhelm’s Palace in Germany and was designed by German architect Karl Dohring, with Dr Bayer responsible for the projects engineering. Sadly, King Rama V passed away before it was completed in 1916. The simple looking exterior hides its elaborate interior. On the east side, there is a perfect geometrically symmetric circular staircase with tiled pillars decorated with cherub statues. The upstairs circular hall is art nouveau. The Royal Dinning Room is a blend of modern German and French art nouveau with a statue of Poseidon, the Greek God of the Sea. Thailand’s first ever known badminton court was laid in

The Saff offers three different room categories – Standard, Superior and Deluxe. Each room features designs that fuse in exciting ways, cultural elements from different countries inspired by the ancient journeys of merchants and traders that plied the spice routes.

he Saff, a 79-room establishment housed in a heritage building dating back to the 1900s, opened its doors with a soft launch on 3 October 2010. Taking its name and inspiration from the spice saffron, The Saff is the second independent property managed by the hospitality group, Grace International, creator of the trendsetting boutique hotel, The Scarlet, that has won numerous tourism and design awards. The hotel targets the 20 to 35 age group, with corporate travellers making up 30% of their guests. The rest, are the FITs (Foreign Independent Travellers), who travel alone or with their partners at most, for leisure.

“I have always been intrigued by the fineness and the flavour of the tiny saffron threads,” says the executive director of Grace International, Geeson P. Lawadinata. “The hotel, likewise, aims to offer a precious experience and evocative wonders, just like saffron. The experience shall be exceptional. It combines the warmth of our hospitality and the opportunity for our guests to enjoy the heritage of our distinctive location.”

The Saff is surrounded by hip restaurants, trendy bars, quaint cafes, sophisticatd art galleries and intimate bookshops. The former pre-War three-story building had its traditional features and architectural structure kept intact. Behind The Saff lies the charming and tranquil Duxton Plain Park, perfect for a quiet stroll while taking in the beautiful greenery and crisp air.

In his search for a unique concept for the hotel, Concept Director, Mr Michael Tan, found saffron had a significant presence in various countries for more than 3,000 years. His passion for different cultures infuses his designs with irreverence, colour and energy. “The regions through which the spices were traded became our key source of inspiration for the design of this hotel, as well as its colour palettes.

The friendly service staff await guests’ arrival behind a softly up-lit front counter of polished and etched brass panels, referencing the Orient. On each side of the counter, two Persian inspired niches are softly back-lit to highlight wrought iron infill panels and illuminating the teal walls behind to create a nice juxtaposition with the purple walls. Overhead a recessed ceiling feature glows with backlighting and mirrored surface to reflect the activities below. Modern contemporary artworks are displayed within the lobby area, together with intricate sculptures, paintings and other fascinating details. Bold lighting fixtures are used as art pieces while adding a dramatic sense to these installations by casting unpredictable shadows on the walls. Every room consists of a writing desk that is fixed with highly sculptured legs that are each different for a quirky twist with their forms playing off one another. Cultural and visual stimulations are added with the use of stained glass and generous drapes of vibrantly coloured saris. Classic Indian, Persian and Thai architectural archways inspire the profile of the headboard and next to the comfortable beds, authentic Saharanpur carved tables from Northern India are instantly modernized with a flash of bright accent colours. H

the Cayenne with the BMW X5 M, BMW X6 M, Land Rover Range Rover Sport Supercharged, Mercedes-Benz ML63 AMG, Infiniti FX50 and the upcoming Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8.

ere in Thailand, with roads that are mostly less than perfect, SUVs have proved intensely popular with most car makers, but one that has grown from strength to strength with wealthy Thais and expats is the outstanding Porsche Cayenne.

Although the new Cayenne doesn’t shatter the model quite like the original, we’re still amazed when we come across a lumbering SUV that can handle the twists like a sports car and then tackle the worst Mother Nature can throw at it. Only the Range Rover Sport comes close to the Cayenne in that regard, but even the mighty Land Rover falls short of the Cayenne’s on-track prowess.

Porsche raised the public’s collective eyebrow when it decided to enter the sport-utility vehicle business in 2003 with its bulbous Cayenne. However, in spite of its rather ungainly styling, this midsize luxury SUV has proven itself worthy of the vaunted Porsche name.

Reshaped

Having accounted for an astounding 280,000 global sales in its seven short years on the market, the Cayenne is the most important vehicle in Porsche’s line-up.

Following Porsche’s design philosophy of evolution rather than revolution, the second-generation Cayenne is a natural progression of the original’s looks. While the Cayenne’s overall shape remains, everything looks a little neater and a little more Porsche-like on the 2011 model, with clear ties to the Panamera sedan. The end result can be likened to a fun house mirror, with the 2011 model appearing more compact than its predecessor, despite gaining 2-inches in overall length. The Cayenne’s interior looks fairly similar to its Panamera stable mate, albeit with enough unique styling cues to differentiate the two. Like the Panamera, a high centre console gives the Cayenne’s cabin a decidedly cockpit-like feel; with the shift knob right where your hand

Understandably, there is a lot of pressure on the German automaker to get the second-generation of the Porsche of SUVs right. Think of the Cayenne as 911 meets desert racer. The Cayenne is a rare concept: Equally at home on the off-road course as it is on the race track. Most owners are content with pavement pounding, of course, but Americans’ lust for SUVs has seen phenomenal growth in a segment that barely existed 10 years ago. Today, the Cayenne finds itself facing some pretty stiff competition. Buyers now wanting a super SUV can cross-shop

ABSOLUTE THAI PORSCHE CAYENNE 2011

naturally falls. The Cayenne’s navigation system is flanked by two air vents that mimic the front fender lines. Continuing the theme put in motion by the first Cayenne, the new model features two grab handles on the centre console, with four more on each door. Those handles proved equally as useful on the track as they did off-road. As with any modern Porsche, the Cayenne features excellent seats, offering enough comfort for a cross-country trip while still providing the support and grip needed for an on-track romp. Back-seat passengers are spoiled even more, thanks to the 1.6-inches gained in the Cayenne’s wheelbase The Cayenne S’ interior isn’t a bad place to spend some time, but the Cayenne Turbo’s cockpit is where you really want to be. Opting for the Turbo model adds leather covered dashed and an Alcantara headliner, giving the Cayenne’s interior a far more up-scale feel. Of course, Porsche offers more option configurations than any reasonable buyer could count, so you can be assured that your Cayenne looks nothing like anyone else’s – if you have the cash.

BURRY YOUR RIGHT FOOT IN THE SHAGGY STUFF AND THE CAYENNE S WILL TAKE OFF WITH PLENTY OF GUSTO, LAUNCHING THE 4,553 POUND SUV FROM 0-60MPH IN 5.6 SECONDS.

You are thinking, “Is the new model as fast as its original model?” Oh yes, and it will take you just about anywhere you want to go, too. The Cayenne S comes with a 400 horsepower version of Porsche’s 4.8-liter V8, routing power to all-four wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission. Burry your right foot in the shaggy stuff and the Cayenne S will take off with plenty of gusto, launching the 4,553 pound SUV from 0-60mph in 5.6 seconds. The Cayenne Turbo makes the scenery whiz by even faster, with its 500 horsepower propelling the Cayenne from 0-60mph in just 4.4 seconds. If you have the kind of self restraint to stay off the long pedal, the Cayenne S and Cayenne Turbo actually return fairly decent fuel economy. If you wish to save some money you can take home a standard Cayenne, which comes standard with a six-speed manual transmission and a V6 rated at 300 horsepower. In standard guise, the Cayenne S is noticeably softer than the Cayenne Turbo model, due to its conventional suspension and 18-inch all-season tires. The base Cayenne can still hold its own around the race track, but it’s more like riding an athletic rhinoceros rather than a pure thoroughbred. The Cayenne Turbo all but solves the Cayenne S’s shortcomings with a standard air suspension and beefier 19-inch all-season rollers. The Cayenne Turbo exhibits near-neutral handling – reverting to slight under steer at the limits – and instils the kind of confidence that shouldn’t be possible in a vehicle of its size.

72

A B S O L U T E T H A I A P R I L / M AY 2 011

But if you want the perfect Cayenne, you have to order the Turbo with Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC), Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus (PTV Plus) and carbon ceramic brakes. Although much more technical than we can explain on these pages, Porsche’s PDCC system essentially eliminates body roll through a multitude of sensors and hydraulic motors. Porsche’s PTV Plus is even more impressive, virtually eliminating under steer by slightly braking the inside front wheel while simultaneously sending more power to the outside rear wheel. As an added bonus, the PTV Plus grants a third setting in the Cayenne’s off-road program, allowing full locking of the rear differential. Opting for the ceramic brakes nets a much better pedal feel, not to mention the ability to do lap after lap without any sign of brake fade. We were able to get the Cayenne Turbo’s pad to smoke pretty good but never lost any confidence while on the track. While most Cayenne’s won’t face any harsh terrain but if taken off-road you will be impressed with the Cayenne’s two-track toughness. The Cayenne can handle everything you can throw at it without breaking a sweat, and its hill decent function worked like a charm. The Cayenne isn’t quite up to the Range Rover Sport’s off-road level – lacking exterior cameras and a few other features – but the Porsche definitely isn’t a one trick pony, feeling just at home on the race track as it is on the two-track.

THE CAYENNE CAN HANDLE EVERYTHING YOU CAN THROW AT IT WITHOUT BREAKING A SWEAT, AND ITS HILL DECENT

While some Porsche faithful may still object to the concept of a Porsche SUV, the Cayenne is hard to argue against – as its sales numbers prove.

FUNCTION WORKED LIKE A CHARM.

The Cayenne manages to seamlessly blend the best attributes of a sports sedan and a pure off-roader, while packaging it all with a handsome exterior and thoroughly luxurious interior. There may be cheaper options out there – especially when considering the Turbo model – but nothing delivers in all facets quite like the Cayenne. Autoexpress Dot Com Co., Ltd. t is amazing how the simple act of just stepping over the threshold of a door can seem to have the same effect as if stepping from one world into another. Peace, serenity, calmness and a feeling of relief wash over you as you are pleasantly greeted, have your heavy bags taken for you and enjoy the fresh cool air while soaking in the beautiful scenery of Hansar’s lobby.

General Manager, Manfred Ilg, says, “We couldn’t be in a better position. Next door is the Royal Bangkok Sports Club and Lumpini Park. Central World and Siam Paragon are within walking distance, and the convenient sky train is literally a mere 5 minute walk away. And for the weary traveler, the taxi ride from airport is only 20 minutes.” There are also two famous temples to visit along with museums and palaces, and do not miss the nightclubs and markets, especially the famous floating market. However, once you have seen your room and all of the hotel’s amenities, you may not wish to leave the building again until it is time to go home. Hansar Bangkok hotel calls itself a ‘boutique hotel,’ but with large rooms, amazing bathrooms, spectacular restaurants, quaint cafés and hip bars it is hard to categorize it as such. True, there are only 94 rooms, but they are spread out over 16 stories, and each room, including the ‘Studio Suites’ (59 sqm), is designed to make you feel you are getting more than your fair share of floor space! There are even ‘Loft Suites’ (125 sqm) that cover two stories; perfect for a family or for entertaining.

FROM THE CLEANING CREW TO THE GENERAL MANAGER, THE STAFF AT HANSAR PUT THEIR HEART AND SOUL INTO MAKING THEIR GUESTS FEEL WELCOMED AND AT HOME. Hansar Bangkok hotel officially opened in early January to a fabulous welcome. This beautiful new hotel is situated in the Hi-So area of Rajdamri road which is surrounded by upscale and high-end living properties. As well, this locale has some of the best and famous shopping areas in the city that carry the crème de la crème brand names. Hansar Bangkok’s

Free wi-fi allows you to stay in touch at all times no matter where you are, and the integrated workspace in each room allows a comfortable and functional place to set your laptop

or Ipad and still enjoy a view of Bangkok’s beautiful skyline. Kitchenettes allow you to enjoy any food you may bring to your room and, believe it or not, all the beverages in the mini-bar are free. “When a customer is ready to check out, they are ready to check out. No one likes waiting around for housekeeping to go in and count each pack of peanuts or each bottle of beer. So, we just decided to make it all complimentary so that check out time is a breeze,” said GM Ilg. When dinner time arrives, there is absolutely no need to leave the hotel because Hansar’s hi-class, French inspired eatery Eve will provide you with best meal in Thailand. Caesar salads with prawns as big as your fist, fillets of beef that will melt in your mouth, lobster tails fresh from the tank, a dessert menu that will add a kilogram or two just by looking at it, and a wine list that reads like a book await the restaurant’s clients. Then, luckily for you, your huge and heaven sent king size bed is just a few floors above you. Climb in and watch some TV or a DVD, or listen to your own tunes through the provided Ipod docking station. Or, if you are not yet sleepy, climb the grand staircase to The Lounge that has been fitted out with comfortable chairs and sofas for people to meet up, unwind, and relax. After the indulgence from the night before, the next day would be the perfect time to take advantage of Hansar’s in-house LUXSA spa. An hour or two in there will leave you feeling rejuvenated and fully charged. Then go take a dip in the infinity swimming pool and Jacuzzis on the 9th floor. When feeling hunger pains again, Café Boca is ready to serve up a delicious quick lunch.

THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO NEED TO LEAVE THE HOTEL BECAUSE HANSAR’S HI-CLASS, FRENCH INSPIRED EATERY EVE

While most hotels provide nice rooms, infinity pools, etc. Hansar Bangkok sets itself apart by providing amazingly trained staff. From the cleaning crew to the General Manager, the staff at Hansar put their heart and soul into making their guests feel welcomed and at home. This one attribute alone will ensure Hansar Bangkok will always require well in advanced reservations.

WILL PROVIDE YOU WITH BEST MEAL IN THAILAND.

TAKE THAT BANGKOK! P huket Stretch Limos are the first and only stretch limousines in Thailand, another first for Phuket.

that they didn’t have them in Bangkok either,” he continued, “so when we discovered we couldn’t buy them here, we decided to import them ourselves.”

Bringing them here was the idea of partner Swede Bengt Wojidkow who had some experience of import and export and had the right contacts to facilitate their legal importation and registration in Thailand. “This took a considerable amount of time as they are the first of their kind in the country, and so a lot of hard work went into getting the paperwork right. ” Ten months in total was the time it took to get the cars on the road, but Bengt remained philosophical throughout the process, “I’ve lived here long enough to know that doing things the ‘right way’ can take longer here.”

The cars have certainly made a splash since they arrived on the island, as can be seen whenever they pull up to a venue. It’s almost like a paparazzi happening with locals and visitors alike vying to see whose getting out. Bengt humbly stated that he always felt a bit sorry for them when it was only him or his friends. “However we have already had some real celebrities hire the cars, we’ve also done a photo shoot for a magazine and some movie work too, in many ways the Limos themselves are celebrities in Phuket.”

RICHARD GERE RELAIS & CHÂTEAUX 2011 AMBASSADOR

R

ichard Gere, the esteemed actor and passionate innkeeper of the Bedford Post, has been named the 2011 Ambassador of Relais & Châteaux. The charming eight-bedroom Bedford Post, located about an hour north of New York City, owned by Gere, his wife Carey Lowell and their business partner Russell Hernandez, is a new addition to the Relais & Châteaux family. As a result, Gere has stepped into the role of the Ambassador as a Relais & Châteaux innkeeper himself.

Relais & Châteaux is an exclusive collection of 500 of the finest hotels and gourmet restaurants in 60 countries. Furthermore, Relais & Châteaux is also a family of hoteliers and Grands Chefs from all over the world who share a passion for and a personal commitment to ensuring their guests are privy to moments of exceptional harmony. To choose Relais & Châteaux is to experience an unforgettable celebration of the senses. From the vineyards in Napa valley to the beaches in Bali, from the olive trees in Provence to the lodges in South Africa, Relais & Châteaux offers a chance to explore the Route du Bonheur and discover a special place in a variety of destinations.

Mr. Gere undertook the restoration project of the Bedford Post as an act of preservation in order to provide a gathering place for his local community. The actor embraced the idea and transformed this abandoned property into a club house gathered around fine food and wine and a serene art de vivre. Gere is the perfect example of a Relais & Châteaux innkeeper, and he beautifully articulates the common values shared by all members in the following passage: “We share a kindred spirit with the other Relais & Chateaux innkeepers: a genuine commitment to serve, a rather insane attention to detail, a passion for beauty in all its forms and a personal aspiration to make our world a little better for us having been here.”

The Relais & Châteaux signature reflects this ambition:

ALL AROUND THE WORLD, UNIQUE IN THE WORLD

ABSOLUTE THAI FRIENDS HELPING FRIENDS

Final Judge day on March 9th.

Mrs. Pradab Petkaew Thailand. second from left second row on day of receiving best volunteer within South Of Thailand.

Mrs. Pradab Petkaew , and Miss Ratchada Petkaew, at the charity launch on 28th October, 2010

FRIENDS HELPING FRIENDS E veryone needs a helping hand in their lives at some point; some more than others. Sometimes, some people cannot even help themselves to get the food and medicine that they need. Therefore, because the human heart hates to see others suffering, people around the world will stick their hand out to help those in need, especially if that someone is a friend in their community.

Mrs. Pradab Petkaew and her family, who all started to feel the problem of the disease coming into their local community and saw it ruining families, and with the help of Mr. John L Holmes and Miss Ratchada Petkaew, began the “Friends Helping Friends” charitable foundation.

Mrs. Petkaew and her family were willing to stick out a helping hand. As well, Absolute World Group has proudly donated and helped with technical support for this charity.

HIV/AIDS is one of our generation’s worst diseases. Fortunately, medical technology has advanced as medicines have been produced to help slow down the destruction of the disease, but a handful of people in Phang Nga cannot afford the needed medicines. As well, others in the community have not been educated on what HIV/AIDS is, how it is spread, or how to care for those with it.

Once the Foundation was set up, it attracted a lot of local community support and interest; help from as small as a bowl of rice being offered by one individual to another, to the entire Phang Nga community rallying together to support Mrs. Petkaew’s dreams of expanding the foundation. “Friends Helping Friends” was established in October 2010, and the foundation did so well that it has already received the award as “Phang Nga’s No. 1 volunteer.” But even better is that the foundation won the “The Best volunteer within the Public Health Branch for AIDS of Thailand 2011” bestowed from the Royal Palace. Mrs. Petkaew and some of her family will actually get to go to the Royal Palace to receive the award.

MRS. PETKAEW’S OBJECTIVES FOR THE FOUNDATION WERE: HELP AIDS PATIENTS AND THEIR FAMILY WITH FUNDS TO RECEIVE BASIC MEDICAL SUPPORT AND COVER ALL MEDICAL FEES; FULL SCHOLARSHIP FOR AIDS PATIENTS’ CHILDREN; FINANCIAL SUBSIDIES FOR
