In my last editors note, I mentioned to everyone to get ready for the hot season, to drink a lot of water, etc. but, to mine and everyone else’s surprise, there was no hot season. Thailand went full bore into the rainy season. Although some parts got way too much rain, it beats 43 degree weather any day. However, our hearts go out to all of those around the world who have suffered from the terrible natural disasters in the past couple of months.

If you think the cover picture of Natalie Portman is beautiful, wait until you see the ones in her article. How many people in the world have a Masters degree from Harvard and an Oscar? She is amazing. And so is the article on the African train journey. The stunning photography that accompanies the story is just as enthralling. If you are heading to Laos, be sure and read the article about the new resort Kiridara Luang Prabang, and then you can visit this amazing country while returning each night to a comfortable resort. Southeast Asia and its wonderful people are becoming more and more accessible.

Starting with the August / September issue, you will also be able to download a special iPad Absolute Thai App that will give you longer articles, more photographs, feature high-resolution video and interactive media. If you have yet to play around with an iPad, you are in for an amazing experience. Apple has catapulted technology far into the future, and we are happy to go along for the ride.

UPCOMING EVENTS IN THAILAND JUNE - JULY 2011

IMPORTANT Event dates and program details may be subject to change. Many of the festivals and events listed on Thailand’s official calendar of annual events are traditional Buddhist or folk festivals, the date of which is either determined by the Buddhist lunar calendar and waxing and waning moon. These are not staged events. The festivals reflect the rhythm of life in rural Thai villages and local traditions as observed in times past. PHI TA KHON & BUN LUANG FESTIVAL Dan Sai District, Loei District and Province June 24 - 26, 2011

BLOOMING KRACHIAO FLOWER FESTIVAL / THE SIAM TULIP FESTIVAL OF CHAIYAPHUM

T

he Phi Ta Khon festival is unique to the Dan Sai district in Loei Province and reflects the local Isan belief in ghosts and spirits. Held once a year, it is part of a grand merit-making festival known as the “Boon Luang” festival.

Pa Hin Ngam National Park, Ban Rai district and Thep Sathit sub-district, Chaiyaphum Province June 1 - August 31, 2011

The origins of the Phi Ta Khon Festival can be found in the tale of Lord Buddha’s last great incarnation before attaining Enlightenment. In Buddhist accounts, it is said that when Prince Vessandara, the Buddha’s penultimate incarnation, returned to his city, it was such a joyous occasion that the village spirits came forth to join the welcoming parade. This very colourful and vibrant Phi Ta Khon procession is the central focus of the celebrations.

T

he unique geographical landscape of Chaiyaphum Province in the Northeast of Thailand gives rise to a range of natural attractions of exceptional beauty. Of these, the fields of pinkish-purple Siam Tulip, or “Dok Krachiao”, come into full bloom in the early part of the rainy season from June to August.

In a lively re-enactment of the tale, the young men of the community dress up as “spirits” wearing long trailing costumes made from colourful strips of cloth sewn together.

Also commonly called ‘patumma’, ‘bua sawan’ (heaven lotus), or ‘bua bok’ (the land lotus), the Siam Tulip is a member of the ginger genera – Curcuma or Zingiberaceae.

6th THAILAND INTERNATIONAL WAX SCULPTURE UBON RATCHATHANI CANDLE PROCESSION FESTIVAL At Thung Sri Muang Park and Ubon Ratchathani National Museum July 1 - 31, 2011

Making Merit Thai Buddhists engage in merit-making as an expression of respect and gratitude by making offerings to Lord Buddha, venerable monks, past and present kings, and to parents, grandparents and their ancestors.

s the seasonal monsoon rains descend over the kingdom, it marks the beginning of the Buddhist “rain retreat” and the Buddhist Lent, or “Phansa”, during which all Buddhist monks retreat to the temples. This is also an auspicious time for Buddhist ordinations as it marks a period of spiritual renewal.

Making merit relates strongly to the concept of rebirth. The accumulation of merit, or bun, is believed to exert a powerful influence on one’s future life and, indeed, rebirths. According to Buddhist teachings, all actions performed in our daily lives affect our field of merit, but none more so than the support of Buddhism itself. When one offers material support to a Buddhist monk – be it alms in the form of food or donations, or voluntary work – one is helping to assure that Buddhist teachings live on. This accumulates merit not only for the giver by helping sustain Buddhism. It also provides the opportunity for future generations to make and accumulate merit. In addition to the monk’s morning alms round, the presentation of the Lenten candles is also a merit-making act.

Known as “Khao Phansa”, the Buddhist Lent is a time devoted to study and meditation. Buddhist monks remain within the temple grounds and do not venture out for a period of three months starting from the first day of the waning moon of the eighth lunar month (in July) to the fifteenth day of the waxing moon of the eleventh lunar month (in October). As Ubon Ratchathani province prepares for the Buddhist Lent, men folk, ordained as well as laymen, with artistic skills set about the task of molding and sculpting Lenten candles. As these works of art are to be presented as Buddhist merit-making offerings, the artisans pour their heart and soul into their craft. Many of these are fine examples of Buddhist art and sculpture. The candle festival is unique to Ubon Ratchathani province and the customs and traditions related to this Buddhist festival have been diligently preserved by local communities.

ot since the likes of Audrey Hepburn and Grace Kelly has an actress possessed such a potent cocktail of elegance and beauty as Natalie Portman. Armed with a maturity well beyond her years and a subtle sexuality that creeps up on you (it emerged full force in Closer), Portman has become one of the most coveted and successful actresses in Hollywood. The Harvard grad (she earned a Masters in psychology in 2003) can do big-budget blockbusters (Star Wars, V For Vendetta) and character-driven dramas (The Other Boleyn Girl, Brothers) with equal amounts of ease, and has managed to avoid scandal and tabloid overkill despite living in the public eye since she was just 12 years old. And just when Portman’s star couldn’t possibly get any brighter, she goes ahead and wins a Golden Globe Award and an Oscar nod for her harrowing portrayal of a ballerina in crisis in Darren Aronofsky’s psychosexual masterpiece Black Swan. Just a quick word of advice to the marketing teams behind Portman’s slew of upcoming movies in 2011 (Thor, Your Highness, The Other Woman): Add “Academy Award Winner” to Portman’s name on all the promotional materials.

NOT SINCE THE LIKES OF AUDREY HEPBURN AND GRACE KELLY HAS AN ACTRESS POSSESSED SUCH A POTENT COCKTAIL OF ELEGANCE AND BEAUTY AS NATALIE PORTMAN.

Though Natalie Portman (nee Hershlag) was born in Jerusalem, her family moved to the United States when she was just 3 in order for her father to continue his career in medicine. By 1988, her family had settled in Long Island, and Portman, who has always felt a close tie to her Jewish roots, attended Solomon Schechter Day School of Glen Cove, New York, and graduated from Syosset High School. When she was 11, Portman was discovered in a New York pizza joint by a modeling scout, but her true passion was acting, a love affair she developed while attending the exclusive Stagedoor Manor Performing Camp for three summers. Yes, her acting is amazing and should be praised, but to be able to juggle being in block buster movies while at the same time studying for a bachelors and then a masters degree in psychology from one of the most prestigious universities in the world is an accomplishment that is almost beyond comprehension. Rather than succumb to the temptations that befall most child stars, Portman has developed into a passionate, caring and intelligent young woman. Her Harvard degree speaks for itself, and instead of resting on the laurels of celebrity, Portman has actively campaigned for a variety

of environmental and political causes, including animal rights (she was voted PETA’s sexiest vegetarian in 2002), microfinancing in underdeveloped countries and democratic candidates John Kerry and Barack Obama. But despite all her past success, nothing can top Portman’s 2010, which saw her star in Darren Aronofsky’s sinister ballet thriller, Black Swan, with a performance that has earned her every major acting award out there, including a Golden Globe and Academy Award for Best Actress. With a healthy relationship and a baby on the horizon, the only way things could get better for Portman is if, well... They probably can’t get any better, come to think of it. Natalie Portman’s Film Career Kicks Off With The Professional When Luc Besson cast a 12-year-old girl with no film acting experience named Natalie Hershlag in his film The Professional (aka Leon), he couldn’t have foreseen that he was launching the career of one of the most celebrated young actresses of our generation. But that’s exactly what happened. As soon as the precocious girl walked into the frame of the slick urban thriller, about an assassin who befriends a young girl, a star was born. The film was a roaring success and has since become a cult classic, but some critics took issue with such a young girl taking part in such an extremely violent film. Still, Portman had emerged a star and used her unusual maturity to land roles in Michael Mann’s Heat, Ted Demme’s Beautiful Girls, Woody Allen’s Everyone Says I Love You, and Tim Burton’s Mars Attacks!. Not too shabby for the start of a career.

Natalie Portman Is Indoctrinated Into The Star Wars Universe Before George Lucas cast Natalie Portman to play Padme Amidala in Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace, the actress had not even seen one of the previous three films. Still, by signing on to the project (and its two sequels), by far one of the most highly anticipated movie events in history, Portman cemented a place on the wall of all Star Wars’ fans (which is about every male on the planet aged 25 to 50). Though the films were box-office juggernauts, stiff dialogue and lazy storytelling couldn’t save them from critical and audience backlash. Though Portman had entered the world of blockbuster filmmaking with a bang, fans couldn’t help but wonder if her talents would be better served elsewhere.

Natalie Portman Charms Our Pants Off In Garden State Though she already earned a Golden Globe nomination for her turn in Anywhere But Here and portrayed a teenage mother in Where The Heart Is, audiences still longed to see Natalie Portman in a role that utilized her charming girl-next-door appeal. In walked Zach Braff, who, with his ode to family, coming home and New Jersey, made Portman the apple of every headphone-wearing hipster’s eye. After watching Garden State, in which Portman literally plays a girl next door, it was impossible not to crush on the enchanting actress. Natalie Portman Stars In Closer Proof that Portman had finally reached the pinnacle of superstardom was in director Mike Nichols’ decision to cast her alongside Julia Roberts, Clive Owen and Jude Law IMAGE: HELGA ESTEB / SHUTTERSTOCK.COM

in the steamy drama Closer. As one-quarter of the sexiest foursome to hit the screen since Screech did those three chicks and taped it, Portman stripped her way to a Golden Globe for best supporting actress and an Oscar nod to boot. Officially on Hollywood’s exclusive A-list, Portman had her choice of films, and she ran the gamut in both size and scope. From big-budget blowouts like V For Vendetta and Mr. Magorium’s Wonder Emporium, arty indies like My Blueberry Nights and The Darjeeling Limited and pensive period pieces like Goya’s Ghosts and The Other Boleyn Girl, Portman was proving that no matter what the script called for, she was game. Except nudity, of course. To this day, Portman has yet to show us the goods on screen (save for a brief butt appearance in Wes Anderson’s short film Hotel Chevalier). Black Swan The moment the first images of Natalie Portman’s painted white face and red, searing eyes hit the web, Darren Aronofsky’s erotic ballet thriller Black Swan became one of the most anticipated films of the year. After it premiered at Venice, Telluride and Toronto, buzz surrounding the film reached a fever pitch, with Portman’s devastating portrayal of a ballerina come undone attracting the majority of the attention. Well, this indie film shot on a shoestring budget earned nominations for every major award, including an

on the way, everything seems to be going Portman’s way, with 2011 shaping up to be no different. The busy actress has five films in the pipeline, including Kenneth Branagh’s Thor and David Gordon Green’s medieval stoner comedy Your Highness. Commenting on stoner movies, Portman says, “I love stoner comedies. I smoked weed in college, but I haven’t smoked in years. I’m too old. I wish I was that cool, but I’m like an old lady now. I’m in bed by 10 p.m. I can’t do that anymore.” Intent to prove that she can tackle any genre with aplomb, Portman also stars in the romantic drama The Other Woman and the Tom Hanks-starring sci-fi thriller Cloud Atlas. Portman has positioned herself to be at the forefront of our collective radars for the distant future. And, yes, that’s a very good thing.

At the end of the day, you can relax at one of the best nightlife areas in Singapore – Clarke Quay, St James Power Station, and Zouk that are all easily accessible from the hotel. There are also award-winning restaurants and myriad food outlets within a stone’s throw of the hotel foyer. Listening to what guests want and designing services to fit their needs is the recipe for success at RP. One of their most proven successes is the Carousel. Expert focus groups were brought in to give honest comments and feedback about what they would like to see in an eatery. Carousel is an international buffet restaurant serving superb cuisine in elegant surroundings. It is divided into four sections; The Living Room, The State Rooms, The Verandah and The Terrace. It was voted as the Best Buffet Restaurant in Singapore for two consecutive years by SPH AsiaOne People’s Choice Awards 2010 and 2009, after also being selected as Best Buffet Restaurant by The Straits Times. “It is a huge encouragement to receive the award from a group of discerning audience for the second time. We are stepping up to the challenge once more to scale greater heights in the buffet dining scene. The additional touches in Carousel are our way of expressing our gratitude to our guests, with compliments.” said Patrick Fiat. In addition, the culinary team was awarded 17 medals, including the Gourmet Team Challenge overall champion in Food & Hotel Asia 2010. Culinary Executive Chef, Abraham Tan, said, “It is indeed encouraging to receive recognition from the best in the industry across Asia. These awards will inspire us to push the limits of culinary art and bring the best dining experience to our guests.” It is the thoughtful service, charismatic flair and savoir-faire of the staff that compliment

the amazing quality of the food itself, according to guests. The award-winning culinary team led by Chef Abraham, continues to reinvent the dining experience on offer. New inclusions on the menu are responses to guests’ suggestions. Seasonal freshly-shucked oysters from Australia, France, Canada and the United States are part of the dinner buffet, serving up to 17 types on the signature seafood counter. The state-of-the-art Nespresso machine, which have been installed in all the hotel rooms and meeting facilities, is a new addition to Carousel. Guests can also opt for cappuccino, latte or espresso. For tea lovers, varying brews including an assortment of 10 different teas are extended options to choose from. Chilled flavoured teas are also available during lunch, high tea and dinner meal periods. The hospitality industry is constantly evolving and at RP they work hard to stay ahead of market trends. This includes being aware of changing public opinion on health issues such as smoking. RP was the first 100% smoke-free business hotel in Singapore. It was also the first to introduce a complimentary mini-bar, hi-speed internet access and Nespresso machines in all rooms. The hotel has invested a huge amount to implement these innovative initiatives and to meet and exceed the growing expectations of seasoned and weary road warriors from the world of commerce.

“THERE IS NO SECRET. WHEN ONE WALKS IN OUR HOTEL, THE ANSWER IS EVIDENT. YOU WILL FEEL THE GENUINE WARMTH OF OUR STAFF AND YOU WILL EXPERIENCE A CLASS OF SERVICE THAT IS DISTINCTLY OURS. THE PASSION AND COMMITMENT FROM OUR STAFF IS SPECIAL. IT MAKES ME PROUD TO HAVE SUCH A GREAT TEAM WORKING WITH US.”

The other vital emphasis at RP is on staff training and staff welfare. As Mr Fiat emphasises, “There is no secret. When one walks in our hotel, the answer is evident. You will feel the genuine warmth of our staff and you will experience a class of service that is distinctly ours. The passion and commitment from our staff is special. It makes me proud to have such a great team working with us.” Human resources play an essential part in facilitating the connection with guests emotionally and meeting their needs. This sensitivity in turn takes the hotel to the top of the list. At RP they work hard, to attract the best in the hospitality business at all levels and retain a pool of motivated and talented team members. The organisation also recognises the need to embrace changes, as the younger generations make up a substantial part of the workforce. They have held engagement sessions with different age groups of the employees to find out what they are looking for in an

Although there has been a global downturn, Asia has seen recent economic growth as the situations in Europe and United States have remained precarious. China, India and the Southeast Asia are where the action is and business is thriving. The integrated resorts are bringing buzz and Singapore is a growing leisure market as well as an established business destination. Those who have not been to Singapore or have been there only a long time ago are coming back to enjoy all the new facilities. RP is at the forefront of that regional strength in the hospitality industry. Combining innovation, experience, rigorous standards and above all a sense of goodwill and fun makes RP the ideal place from which to enjoy the buzz of Singapore. And, if there is something that you as guest think could be changed for the better, then simply tell them. The ability to listen is what makes RP a cut above the rest.

organisation. The highly-connected younger generation full of enthusiasm bring innovation and new ideas into the company. The experienced older generation also has a vast pool of knowledge that the organisation values and taps into. The management strikes a balance, playing all to their strengths. This balance is based on a strong belief in professionalism and mutual respect. Empowering individuals and encouraging them to make their contributions from their strengths are part of the hotel’s training for employees. To quote the HR department, “we listen, we consult and we motivate. We aim for every employee to be able to derive real pride in their work with us. This is something often neglected by organisations that make efficiency and profits their only focus. Efficiency and profits come from an empowered workforce not afraid to display initiative.” The hotel will continue to improve their services by listening to both guests and employees. “Bringing joy to the workplace will remain fundamental to ensure that our people come to work inspired and motivated. We want to create a fun environment where people look forward to come to work every day.”

ABSOLUTE THAI ROVOS RAIL

ROVOS RAIL The Pride of Africa W O R D S : Peter Holthusen

T

In a series of journeys lasting from 24 hours to 4 weeks, The Pride of Africa links some of Africa’s greatest destinations from Cape Town, at the southernmost tip of the continent, to Dar es Salaam in Tanzania, from scenic splendours as diverse as the game reserves of Mpumalanga to the Victoria Falls, from the desert landscapes in Namibia and the stark beauty of the Karoo, to the lush cane fields of KwaZulu-Natal and the spectacular Garden Route along the Cape south coast.

here were scenes of wild enthusiasm when England’s Stockton to Darlington railway opened to traffic on 27 September 1825. It was the first railway in the world designed for steam locomotives. The railway was built to take coal from the South Durham coal fields near Shildon down to the River Tees at Stockton, via Darlington. But the railway company soon realised that the future lay with passengers as well as goods and in 1883 introduced regular steam-hauled passenger trains.

THERE IS NO FINER WAY TO SEE SOUTH AFRICA THAN ON THE POPULAR WEEKLY JOURNEYS

Nearly 200 years after its invention, the train continues to provide one of the most satisfying modes of travel. Today, those in search of nostalgia for this golden age of travel can combine traditional charm and elegance with modern facilities and first-class service.

BETWEEN PRETORIA AND CAPE TOWN… A PERFECT ILLUSTRATION OF SOUTH AFRICA AS A WORLD IN ONE COUNTRY.

ABSOLUTE THAI ROVOS RAIL

There is no finer way to see South Africa than on the popular 48-hour weekly journeys between Pretoria and Cape Town. This 1600-kilometre journey is a perfect illustration of South Africa as a world in one country. Travel the grasslands of the gold rich Highveld to the haunting desert of the Great Karoo. Journey’s end is Cape Town, the Mother City of South Africa, cradled by the imposing backdrop of Table Mountain, Devil’s Peak and Lions Head. Our journey began at Rovos Rail’s historic and recently refurbished private station at Capital Park, Pretoria. The once bustling hub of steam locomotion in the old Transvaal is now the headquarters for Rovos Rail. The gracious colonial-style railway station serves as the new departure or arrival point for all train services except the Garden Route.

MELLOW LIGHTING CREATES THE ROMANTIC MOOD, THE PASSENGERS THEMSELVES PROVIDE THE ELEGANT AND SOCIABLE TONE, THE EVER-ATTENTIVE SERVICE ENSURES THAT ALL YOUR NEEDS ARE CATERED TO, AND THE COCKTAIL STEWARDS GUARANTEE THE LOUNGE AND CLUB CAR IS THE PLACE TO BE UNTIL THE EARLY HOURS.

We soon arrive in Johannesburg, and as darkness falls over the city, we seem far removed from the industrial chic of the distant skyscrapers and mine dumps. Mellow lighting creates the romantic mood, the passengers themselves provide the elegant and sociable tone, the ever-attentive service ensures that all your needs are catered to, and the cocktail stewards guarantee the Lounge and Club Car is the place to be until the early hours. Fine dining is at the very heart of the Rovos Rail experience. There’s an accent on fresh local ingredients and traditional dishes such as game are a house speciality. At the end of the day while you are dining the mood transforms as your exclusive suite is turned into a cosy bedroom, with beds dressed with crisp cotton sheets – turned down and ready to welcome you for the night in an elaborate ceremony of almost forgotten rituals. Every morning there is a full English breakfast with dishes cooked to order as well as a mouth-watering breakfast buffet. It thus seemed fitting that the train stopped en-route to Cape Town at Kimberley and Matjiesfontein, two South African towns that have stories of their own to tell. The discovery, in the late 1860s, of huge deposits of diamonds at Kimberley, in the Griqualand West region of the far Northern Cape, was a pivotal event: it heralded the industrial age, marking the transformation of southern Africa from a backwater that could safely be ignored to a rich prize in the game of imperial politics.

The next day we stop briefly at the small town of De Aar, the second most important railway junction in South Africa for lines from the Western Cape, the Eastern Cape, Gauteng and Namibia. Olive Schreiner, the famous author and feminist who wrote ‘Women and Labour’, used to live in De Ar and her house has since been converted into a restaurant. The epitome of luxury, with handsome wood panelling and period Edwardian features, the air-conditioned suites accommodate two people offering the option of twin or spacious double beds. In the en-suite bathrooms, original fittings combine with the modern technology of piping hot showers, hair dryers and shaver points. The Pullman Suites are relatively small, but nevertheless equipped with a comfortable sofa-seat during the day with a conversion to double or twin beds in the evening, and have a luxurious en-suite bathroom with shower. The Deluxe Suites also accommodate two passengers in either twin or double bed configuration and have a spacious lounge area and en-suite bathroom with shower. The very spacious suites offer discerning passengers the opportunity to travel in absolute privacy, comfort and luxury, with fittings and facilities that are of the very highest standard. All are equipped with a writing bureau and a personal safe for valuables. While room service is available 24 hours a day, there is also a refrigerated bar stocked with beverages of the passengers’ choice. FOR THAT VERY SPECIAL OCCASION OR JOYOUS CELEBRATION OF A HONEYMOON THERE ARE THE LUXURIOUS ROYAL SUITES, EACH OF WHICH TAKES UP HALF A CARRIAGE. THEY ARE SPACIOUS AND ELEGANT; EACH HAS ITS OWN PRIVATE LOUNGE AREA AND LARGE BATHROOM, COMPLETE WITH A VICTORIAN ROLL-TOP BATH AND SEPARATE SHOWER. For that very special occasion or joyous celebration of a Honeymoon there are the luxurious Royal Suites, each of which takes up half a carriage. They are spacious and elegant; each has its own private lounge area and large bathroom, complete with a Victorian roll-top bath and separate shower. Throughout its distinguished history, Rovos Rail has encouraged its passengers to expect a service that is above the ordinary, and in meeting and exceeding these expectations it has earned itself a now legendary reputation, and is set for a future of equal distinction. Cecil John Rhodes dreamt of a railway track linking Cape Town to Cairo. His dream was never realized, but in 2010 these two fundamentally different African cities will be joined together by Rovos Rail’s ‘Trans-African Cape to Cairo Safaris’. Rohan Vos and his team have designed two separate

ABSOLUTE THAI KHAO SOK NATIONAL PARK

KHAO SOK NATIONAL PARK S

outhern Thailand has long been one of the world’s most favoured vacation destinations. The pristine white beaches of Phuket and Koh Samui draw visitors from all over the globe. The diving in both the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand is superb. Great facilities, wonderful food and a culture of grace all add to the mix. But there are also many gems that most will never have heard of. Heading a little off the beaten track certainly brings its own rewards.

of plants and wildlife here than in the Brazilian Amazon. Khao Sok covers 740sq km and and although it is a wilderness of supreme beauty, it is little known outside of Thailand. The park is characterised by towering limestone outcrops. Millions of years ago these once formed a marine coral reef. Scientists tell us it was once five times the length of the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. Over thousands of years the limestone rocks were partially eroded, by acidified water as a result of rains flowing through the forest. This left the beautiful karst formations we see today.

Khao Sok National Park, straddling the southern Thai peninsula between Suratthani and Phang Nga, is home to the world’s oldest rainforest. Amazingly, there is a greater variety

In more recent years many parts of Thailand were plundered by loggers and prospectors. Through seven years in the

1970s and 1980s the area around Khao Sok was occupied by CPT (Communist Party of Thailand) insurgents, and the resulting conflict kept these human predators at bay. Ironically, if it had not been for this war, then the area might not have survived in the pristine state we find it in today. It would have been laid waste in rampages by logging and mining interests. The national park itself was established in 1980. The huge Rajjaprabha Dam was constructed in 1982. It dams the Pasaeng river creating a 165 square kilometre lake within the national park’s boundaries. This giant man-made lake supplies electricity to the whole of the south of Thailand. In building it, the authorities attempted the largest capture-and-release operation of wildlife ever in Thailand’s history. This was in order to save the animals from drowning in the lake. Unfortunately, the operation met with only partial success and many species captured died out despite all the best efforts of those trying to preserve them. A World Bank survey in 1995 revealed the loss of some 52 varieties of river fish because they could not adapt to the deep waters of the lake.

KHAO SOK NATIONAL PARK, STRADDLING THE SOUTHERN

Even with these environmental upsets, Khao Sok is a success story and these days it offers a range of exciting nature related activities.

Jungle trekking is a great way to enjoy the park, either with or without a guide. A more adventurous option is to do the same, except with the addition of elephant power.

Elephants move silently through the undergrowth and leave hardly any sign of their passage. This is very much their natural environment, and a trip on the back of one of these swaying giants is a curiously relaxing experience. The elephant uses its trunk much the same way as a cat uses its whiskers to sense, feel and manoeuvre its way around obstacles. It can also tackle gradients difficult for humans. Most tour operators in the region will be able to book an elephant trek that suits your timetable. If you prefer to be water born, the Sok River is a perfect place for a relaxing canoe ride. You can either paddle yourself or get a guide to do both the hard manual labour and point out sites of interest along the way. These might be birds, such as kingfishers and herons or reptiles such as snakes, frogs and monitor lizards. There are also wild monkeys, and watching one of these agile beasts negotiate its way through the jungle justifies the hours spent waiting. Apart from the abundant wildlife, the scenery of Khao Sok is also stunning. One glides past huge jagged lime stone cliffs covered with dense jungle. It is a curious place that

ABSOLUTE THAI KHAO SOK NATIONAL PARK

almost reminds one of the movie Avatar. The mountains are often wreathed in low clouds and they rear up suddenly; jaged and magnificent. The same kind of scenery continues on creating the aquatic splendours of Khao Lak, Krabi and Phuket, dotting the Andaman Sea with weird prehistoric limestone markers. One of the most beautiful areas in Khao Sok is the Cheow Larn Lake. Majestic limestone karsts rise hundreds of meters above the shimmering waters. It is an incredibly peaceful place. You can stay overnight in one of the stilted houses at the water’s edge, waking at dawn to the sounds of the birds and the insects. These rustic retreats offer a combination of peaceful relaxation punctuated by focused attention on the natural sites on offer all around. Most will serve basic meals and provide the perfect place to slow down from the hectic pace of modern life. The lake itself consists of 165sq kms of windswept beauty with sheer peaks rising out of the water towering hundreds of feet above the reservoir. Whole trees grow out of the side of these limestone crags, forcing open cracks and fissures,

IN THESE HILLS AND CRAGS LIVE GIBBONS, BARKING DEER, KINGFISHERS, EGRETS, FLYING FOXES, WILD MONKEYS AND A HOST OF OTHER FASCINATING AND EXOTIC CREATURES. THE WATERS TEEM WITH CATFISH, GREATER BROOK CARP, HAMPALA BARB, GIANT SNAKEHEAD AND FEATHERBACK FISH.

as their roots burrow deeper for a better hold and added nourishment. Cheow Larn’s resemblance to the beauty spots of Ha Long Bay in Vietnam and Guilin in China are often remarked upon. They all share an eerie, other-worldly like quality – a series of alien beauty spots that criss-cross the East Asian land mass. Though these appear like something from Star Trek, they are actually the result of sixty million years’ worth of water erosion on limestone. In the distant hills one can see more rainforest, but the sheer survival instincts of the foliage growing up from the water level upwards is amazing to behold. In these hills and crags live gibbons, barking deer, kingfishers, egrets, flying foxes, wild monkeys and a host of other fascinating and exotic creatures. The waters teem with catfish, greater brook carp, hampala barb, giant snakehead and featherback fish. The splendid sense of isolation that the lake offers is qualified by the simple act of mooring your boat outside a floating restaurant. There are a number of these with a selection of simple bungalows built on giant bamboo floaters. Once you have enjoyed your meal, you can be in the water itself, splashing and striking out into the deep. You are actually

swimming in several million gallons of mineral water – effectively a sea of Evian. This water is the cleanest known to man and on a hot day it is suitably refreshing. It is no secret that the coastlines fringing Khao Sok both on the side of the Gulf of Thailand and the Andaman Sea yield up some of the most amazing tropical beaches and islands in Asia. Whether it is diving, yachting, snorkeling or simply reading a book in the sun there are endless possibilities. What fewer people are aware of is that taking an excursion into the interior is an easy and rewarding alternative. If in Krabi or Phuket one can easily hire a car and simply head inland. A motorcycle is an even better option as long as one is an experienced driver. The distances are really quite small and the roads are not major thoroughfares. The road that takes you to Khao Sok is off the main crosspeninsula highway, so it is very empty whilst also being in very good condition.

After having explored the nooks and crannies of Khao Sok and its surroundings it is a short drive to Surathani in the Gulf of Thailand and the relaxed beaches of Kho Samui and Kho Phangan. It is even a less distance to Khao Lak, Phuket or Krabi on the Andaman side. The interior that divides these two glorious seas also unites them. The whole southern peninsula and the waters that surround have evolved into one of the most gloriously rich natural environments in Asia. Khao Sok National Park is at the epicenter of one of nature’s greatest miracles.

IT IS NO SECRET THAT THE COASTLINES FRINGING KHAO SOK BOTH ON THE SIDE OF THE GULF OF THAILAND AND THE

ABSOLUTE THAI AUDI Q5 2011

THE 2011 AUDI Q5 C

hour less on the EPA driving cycles than the Audi A4 Avant wagon. Even the Q5 V6 version has been designed to save some money at the pumps.

ontinuing our coverage of SUVs in Thailand, in this issue we will look at the 2011 Audi Q5 which is an SUV based on the A5 Sedan that is set to compete with BMW’s luxurious X5. Since being introduced in 2009, the Q5 has increased in comfort, usability and practicability.

Yet fuel economy is only one of Q5’s many virtues. Thanks to its underpinnings from the Audi A4 sedan, the Q5 is one of the most entertaining vehicles to drive in the segment of luxury crossovers. It has the confident handling and alert responses of the A4, yet the Q5’s decent cargo hold and generous passenger space means it is a comfortable ride while still being practical too. Indeed, its family-friendly sliding rear seat is the only one of its kind among luxury crossovers of this size. A hybrid of both functionality and practicality was in the blueprints from the beginning.

Although luxury cars have seldom been known for their high fuel economy and SUVs especially have also never been known for being frugal with gas. Put the two together and you have a recipe for fuel consumption that would make an oil executive put a down payment on a second yacht. Bucking this trend though is the 2011 Audi Q5. Notable this year for the Q5 is a new turbocharged fourcylinder engine that delivers only a couple of miles per

64

A B S O L U T E T H A I J U N E / J U LY 2 011

What’s New for the 2011 Model? The Audi designers have plugged in a new base engine in 2.0T models; the turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder that is found in many other Audi models. Also new is the eightspeed automatic transmission that is standard equipment. Meanwhile, the 3.2 models gain a standard S Line exterior trim and 19-inch wheels, while adaptive headlights are now included with the Prestige trim. Pimp your Ride! The engineers at Audi are no fools. They know people like to customize their rides. The smallest design addition (or flaw) can be the deciding factor on a customer’s decision to buy or not. Hence, Audi’s ‘trim levels.’

The 2011 Audi Q5 compact luxury crossover is available in four trim levels: 2.0T Premium, 2.0T Premium Plus, 3.2 Premium Plus and 3.2 Prestige. Standard equipment on the 2.0T Premium includes 18-inch wheels, automatic headlights, automatic wipers, roof rails, eight-way power front seats with adjustable lumbar, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, leather upholstery, tri-zone climate control, a sliding and reclining 40/20/40 rear seat, a dash-mounted Multi Media Interface (MMI) and a 10-speaker sound system with CD/MP3 player, auxiliary audio jack and satellite radio. Not bad for just the ‘base model.’ Options on the Premium include a panoramic sunroof, heated front seats and Bluetooth. Step up to the next level and all of the above features come standard on the 2.0T Premium Plus, which also has xenon headlights, LED running lights, a power tailgate, autodimming and power-folding exterior mirrors, an auto-dimming interior mirror and an iPod interface. Nineteen-inch wheels are optional. The iPod interface will certainly catch many people’s attention. Move on up to the 3.2 Premium Plus for a V6 engine, 19-inch wheels, headlight washers and S Line exterior trim (not to mention all of the above goodies). The top-shelf 3.2 Prestige adds adaptive headlights, a blind-spot warning system, keyless ignition/entry, a 14-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system and the Audi MMI Navigation Plus package

drive and a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-4 engine good for 211 horsepower. An eight-speed automatic transmission is standard. EPA-estimated fuel economy is 20 mpg city /27 mpg highway and 22 mpg combined. These are good numbers for any SUV, and if you do not drive like a maniac fuel costs will not eat up your budget.

The 3.2 Prestige can also be equipped with Audi Drive Select (four settings alter throttle response, transmission shift points and steering assist) as well as adaptive cruise control and the Luxury package: ventilated front seats and upgraded leather. Both 3.2 models can be equipped with 20-inch wheels and the S Line package, which adds different 20-inch wheels, performance tires, a sport steering wheel, shift paddles and brushed aluminum trim.

The 3.2T trim packages get a 3.2-liter V6 that produces 270 hp. A six-speed automatic is standard. In Edmunds performance testing, a Q5 3.2 accelerated from a standstill to 60 mph in 7.2 seconds, a performance on par with its Audi’s peers. Estimated fuel economy stands at 18/23/20, which is tops among similarly powered all-wheel-drive crossovers. Towing capacity with the 3.2 is above average, with a 4,400-pound rating when properly equipped.

Audio knows no two customers are alike so customization of a customer’s vehicle is as important to them as the vehicle itself. They know a happy customer will be a repeat customer.

Audi’s Key Factor: Safety The Q5 comes standard with stability and traction control, front side airbags and side curtain airbags. Rear side airbags are optional on all models, while a blind-spot warning system

is standard on the 3.2 Prestige. Nobody wants to smash up their new Audi Q5, but go for all the airbags anyway. It’s a small price to pay for the protection they afford. In government crash tests, the Q5 achieved perfect five-star ratings for frontal and side impacts. In Insurance Institute for Highway Safety testing, the Q5 was likewise awarded the highest rating of “Good” in frontal-offset and side crash tests. In Edmunds brake testing, the Q5 came to a stop in 123 feet, a competitive performance. This is one solidly built machine with the grades to prove it.

Despite its compact size, the Q5 manages to feel roomy whether you’re seated in the front or rear. Each passenger’s comfort was considered during the design phase. The rear seats slide fore and aft, which is a rarity in this segment of luxury crossovers, and the seats also recline for greater comfort. Folding the rear seats down creates 57 cubic feet of maximum cargo space.

Interior Design and Special Features In typical Audi style, the Q5 benefits from classy interior design and top-notch construction.

For further information on the Audi Q5 in Thailand contact www.autoexpress.com

The center stack controls are canted toward the driver, although the layout depends on whether or not you opt for the navigation system. Without navigation, the knob and buttons for the MMI system reside on the center stack, and

IMPIANA RESORT CHAWENG NOI KOH SAMUI Celebrates its 10th Anniversary and Achieving 4-star Status

I

t was just ten years ago, on the 16th March 2001, that the Impiana Group took over what was then known as the Victorian Hotel, on the fringe of Koh Samui’s popular Chaweng Beach. This was the start of a flurry of activity that was to last for more than a year. Renovation, up-grading and modernisation occurred throughout, with the aim of bringing everything up to the accepted in-house standards of the Impiana Group.

beach bar was added, and the small but sumptuous Swasana Spa was constructed and equipped, cleverly landscaped and dovetailed into a niche of its own adjoining the two-storey restaurant block. The completed first phase was celebrated by an official launching of the sparkling new resort in the third quarter of 2002. The overall aim was to bring this in-line with a 4-star brief, and work continued on phase two with this aim in mind. 2008 saw the completion of the extensive re-modelling of the Superior and Deluxe rooms, which involved internal re-structuring and partitioning in addition to complete refurbishment – in effect the entire ‘C-Block’ was gutted and rebuilt, along with corresponding rooms in the main block. The gardens were also revised and the addition of natural stone paving conferred a more modern and freeform appearance. And a chic beach terrace was added to the beach bar, with comfy lounge-style sofas and chairs.

Originally titled Impiana Resort & Spa, all of the rooms were refurbished and re-fitted in a light and fresh contemporary Thai style, and two new suites and eight cottages were constructed at the beach-edge of the property. To complement this, the garden area was improved and re-grassed. And at the same time a large and laid-back

And, almost ten years to the day, following years of applications, construction and inspections, the April of 2011 saw not only Impiana Samui’s 10th anniversary celebration but also the official recognition of the resort’s newly-gained 4-star status!

The occasion was celebrated with a gala dinner and a night of appreciation to express acknowledgement and thanks to all those involved in the project and in particular those 15 staff members who have remained loyal to Impiana Samui since day one. Dignitaries from local government and nearby resorts were wined, dined and entertained, not least by a graceful display of Thai dancing staged by several of the staff (although perhaps this should be called ‘Thai-fusion’ dancing?)!

IT’S AN ONGOING CHALLENGE BUT ONE WHICH CONTINUES TO ADD SPICE AND INTRIGUE TO ALL OF OUR ROLES HERE AT THE NEWLY TITLED IMPIANA RESORT CHAWENG NOI KOH SAMUI.

And so onto phase three. The intention here is the ambitious step-up to 5-star status, but this is a challenge that certainly won’t be met overnight. The 16 standard rooms will, in effect, need to be virtually demolished and re-built, enlarging each one before re-fitting. And the tangle of regulations concerning the overall size of the entire resort and the total numbers of staff and rooms will have to be addressed. And that’s before the issues arising from enhanced security and safety are tackled or facilities for the disabled or handicapped are expanded throughout. It’s an ongoing challenge but one which continues to add spice and intrigue to all of our roles here at the newly titled Impiana Resort Chaweng Noi Koh Samui. But keep your eye on this space. One day in the future you’ll be reading about how we’ve achieved all this – hopefully before another ten years have passed!

THE ROTARY CLUB IN PHUKET

F

The second night started from the Port Arena at Jungceylon in Patong from 9pm with the walk to Soi Bangla hitting many bars and night clubs. Many Thais were very generous in donating more than the foreigners.

undraising efforts of all 6 Rotary Clubs in Phuket to help the Flood and Landslide victims in Thailand was held over a two day period (April 4th & 5th of 2011).

The two days alone raised over B270,000! On the 1st day we saw the Rotarians walk the streets of Phuket Town starting from the Lan Mongkorn Park all the way to Robinson and further along the Yaowarat Road in Samkong before returning back to the park. The trip was around 2 hours with over 30 rotarians participating.

The 6 Rotary Clubs (RC) include: RC of Phuket, RC of Phuket South, RC of Junkseilon, RC of Patong Beach, RC of Andaman and RC of Tongkah. Anyone wishing to donate through the Rotary Clubs can contact us at 081-697-3276 or 085-889-9930.
