It used to be that I could write ‘Hello, and welcome to Thailand!’, but not anymore. Since the design and launch of our super cool iPad Absolute Thai app, you could be reading this from anywhere in the world. Anyway, welcome to our magazine, and I think you will find this issue especially appealing. This issue covers a vast amount of territory. From the small and green Toyota Prius to the fast and sleek private jets, this magazine has something that will peak the interest of nearly everyone. The feature on the hugely popular Australian Hugh Jackman and his quick rise to international stardom is fascinating. It’s amazing what razor sharp fingernails and an immense knack for acting can get you these days!

60

One thing I can be sure of: if you are in Thailand at the moment, you are either reading this in an air-conditioned room or by some cool water as the hot season is still upon us. Personally, I run from air-conditioned room to air-conditioned room; I physically melt in direct sunlight. But this beautiful country and its beautiful people make it all worth the trouble. Thailand would definitely win the award for the ‘friendliest nation’ if such an award were given out. I found the article on Skibo Castle to be most interesting, and am dying to go there. The article is punctuated with some amazing pictures of the citadel turned hotel. I like to picture myself flying into the nearest airport on one of MJets’ Piper Malibu Mirage planes and then driving my Prius to the Castle for a weekend retreat. But, alas, reality sets in; time to get back to work. Enjoy your read!

he unique geographical landscape of Chaiyaphum Province in the northeast of Thailand gives rise to a range of natural attractions of exceptional beauty. Of these, the fields of pinkish-purple Siam Tulip, or “Dok Krachiao”, come in to full bloom in the early part of the rainy season from June to August.

The Phra Buddhamahadammaraja Buddha image is invocated in the Um Phra Dam Nam ritual bathing ceremony performed by the provincial governor to ensure an abundance of crops, plentiful harvests and the prosperity of Petchabun, the ‘city of plants and crops’.

Also commonly called ‘patumma’, ‘bua sawan’ (heaven lotus), or ‘bua bok’ (the land lotus), the Siam Tulip is a member of the ginger genera – Curcuma or Zingiberaceae.

Phra Buddhamahadammaraja Buddha image is associated with the powers to heal illness and agricultural abundance.

THE 2011 KING’S CUP ELEPHANT POLO TOURNAMENT At Anantara Golden Triangle Resort Chiang Rai September 5 - 11, 2011 Spectator entrance is free

T

he King’s Cup Elephant Polo Tournament is a charitable event that raises money for the benefit of all Thailand’s elephants.

The King’s Cup Elephant Polo Tournament was first launched in Hua Hin by Anantara Resort in 2001. During the first five years of the tournament, the event took place in the Royal seaside town of Hua Hin. In 2006, the tournament moved to Golden Triangle and was hosted by Anantara Resort Golden Triangle.

To date the tournament has raised over US$300,000 primarily for the National Elephant Institute, which provides medical care, sustenance, employment, and mahout training to Thailand’s elephant population. In recent years, the funds were used to custom build and run an elephant ambulance as well as provide housing at the Centre’s elephant hospital allowing it to offer free accommodation as well as medical treatment to any sick elephants in Thailand; these funds also provided a mobile veterinary centrifuge for their mobile elephant clinic. Proceeds from the 2009 and 2010 tournaments have been used to ‘rescue rent’ five street elephants to be trained in occupational therapy as part of a joint Thai Elephant Conservation Centre, Chiang Mai University project investigating the benefits of using elephants to treat Autism.

Elephants are a key symbol of Thailand’s history, and nothing but utmost respect is given to the pachyderms and all proceeds of the tournament are used to ensuring their welfare, sustenance, employment, mahout training and medical treatment provision.

It is estimated that Thailand has around 3,600 domesticated elephants and 1,500 wild elephants. The Tourism Authority of Thailand fully endorses the tournament, having identified it as one of the country’s prime annual special events.

Through its own Elephant Camp located within the grounds of the Anantara Resort Golden Triangle, the property’s focus on the future of Thailand’s pachyderm population forms an integral part of the resort’s operations on an ongoing basis. Resident Elephant Camp Director, John Roberts, worked closely with the Thai government’s Elephant Conservation Centre in Lampang to develop Anantara’s camp as an elephant sanctuary and continues to work with them on several ‘big picture’ conservation projects.

For more information on King’s Cup Elephant Polo, please visit www.anantaraelephantpolo.com Anantara Resort Golden Triangle is located 60 km north of Chiang Rai’s international airport.

Now in its tenth year the King’s Cup Elephant Polo Tournament has gone from a small two-day event with six teams into a week-long extravaganza, which in 2010 featured 12 teams from four continents, encompassing 40 players from at least 15 countries.

Phuket Vegetarian Festival Various locations across Phuket 27 September - 05 October 2011

sounded, especially during ceremonies. It is said that the louder the noise the better, because the noise drives away evil spirits. Participants in the festival keep to a strict vegetarian diet for a varying number of days. This is to make themselves strong in mind and body; they also refrain from all vices, including eating animal flesh and killing animals. The festival thus promotes good hygiene, brightness and inner peace. Usually street processions take place, where visitors can see participants walking in a trance. Other events include hundreds of local residents running across a bed of burning coals, or climbing an eight meter ladder of sharp. Apart from the visual spectacle of this festival, visitors can partake in specially prepared vegetarian cuisine made available at street stalls and markets around the island during this time.

During that time a travelling opera company came from China to perform to the miners. When the whole company grew sick from an unnamed malady, they kept to a vegetarian diet to honor two emperor gods, Kiew Ong Tai Teh and Yok Ong Sone Teh. The sickness afflicted the opera troupe then disappeared. This greatly impressed the people of Kathu, who asked how it was done. The answer came back that ritual vegetarianism with its attendant ceremonies had been the cause with the result that people embraced the faith enthusiastically. Thus the festival began, starting the first evening of the ninth lunar month, it then continues until the ninth evening, with its aim to bring good luck to the individuals as well as to the community. Throughout the festival fireworks and drums are

international moviegoers and he quickly secured a spot as one of Hollywood’s favorite leading men. Hugh Michael Jackman was born on Oct. 12, 1968, and raised in Sydney, Australia. The youngest of five children and always clowning around for attention, Jackman performed variety routines for his family and participated in school musical productions when he was young. After earning a journalism degree from the University of Technology in Sydney, he decided to pursue an acting career and trained at the Actor’s Centre Sydney before graduating from the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts in 1994. Fresh out of drama school, Jackman landed a role on the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) prison drama Corelli. He powerfully played the role of violent and manipulative, but insidiously attractive, prison inmate Kevin Jones opposite Deborra-Lee Furness, who starred as the title criminal psychologist. The couple’s budding romance on-screen led to a behind-the-scenes relationship and the actors’ longtime marriage. Jackman landed a recurring role in the adventure series Snowy River: The McGregor Saga (1996) and his relaxed and natural presence was tapped for hosting duties on the pop culture show In Fashion (1997) and the 1997 Australian Film Institute Awards.

Audiences cheered Jackman’s portrayal of edgy mutant Wolverine in the X-Men film series, swooned over him in Baz Luhrman’s sweeping period drama Australia (2008), and honored him with a Tony Award for his portrayal of ostentatious songwriter Peter Allen in the Broadway musical, The Boy from Oz. In July 2011, Jackman has revealed that he almost didn’t pursue an acting career. The X-Men actor said that he was concerned as a child that people might think he was gay if he made his passion for musical theatre public. Jackman said that his father Chris was very supportive of his interest in the arts, but one of his brothers put him off by calling him a “poof.” He said, “I would love to say I was Billy Elliot, but I wasn’t. My dad was like, ‘Terrific,’ but my brother was like, ‘Ah, you poof!’ I was only about 10 or 11, but I remember thinking that this is not a good thing.” Jackman explained that the same brother later convinced him to follow his dream after seeing a production of 42nd Street. He said: “My brother came up to me and said, ‘Man, I want to apologie. I’m such an idiot... you should be up there doing that.’ It was really a kind of sweet thing for him to say. I joined up the next day.” Tony Award winner Jackman, also revealed that when he was cast as the lead in a production of Vaclav Havel’s The Memorandum at university, he “loved it” and felt like he’d found his “tribe.”

a drama examining failing relationships, he reached a much wider audience with his starring role in Antony J. Bowman’s amiable comedy Paperback Hero (1999), where he portrayed an outback trucker who writes a sappy romance novel in his spare time and submits it to a publisher under a female pseudonym. The role was perfectly suited for the open and unpretentious actor, and Paperback Hero, tenderer and understated than many previous Australian comedies, earned Jackman acclaim and exposed him to an international art-house audience. But he truly went wide with his follow-up venture as Logan/Wolverine, a mutant superhero with quick-healing powers, unbreakable bones and razor-sharp metal claws, in Brian Singer’s crowdpleaser X-Men (2000). Jackman perfectly brought the comic-book character of Wolverine, a conflicted anti-hero, to vivid life, pleasing general movie goers and hard-core fans of the comic book, alike. On comic books, Jackman said, “I never read comics as a kid, and when I was slipped the comics under my trailer door, Bryan Singer (director) didn’t want us to read

He was very frightened that we would come out with these 2-D characters, and I was amazed at how helpful they were, the images more than the story. The actor again donned the sideburns and claws of Wolverine for X2 (2003), the superior sequel to X-Men in which Jackman’s character stood out amidst the rest of the terrific ensemble cast as bits and pieces of Wolverine’s mysterious origins were at last revealed. Now an international movie star, Jackman returned his love of musical theater and debuted on Broadway in 2003 in The Boy from Oz. He starred as Peter Allen, the flamboyant showman best known for pop songs like Don’t Cry Out Loud, who died of AIDS-related cancer in 1992.

In 2006, Jackman revived Wolverine for the third installment of the series, X-Men: The Last Stand (2006), directed by Brett Ratner. This time, the mutants’ face a peculiar choice after a cure for mutations is found - retain their uniqueness and remain isolated from society, or give up their strange powers to become human. In a further display of Jackman’s versatility, he turned around to play a charming British playboy suspected of being an infamous killer terrorizing London in Scoop (2006), Woody Allen’s comedy starring Scarlett Johansson as a journalist who poses as a wealthy American to snuff him out. In Christopher Nolan’s period thriller The Prestige (2006), he sparkled as a brash showman caught up in a deadly rival with a brilliant trickster (Christian Bale). He lightened the mood considerably with his next project, lending his voice to the hit animated children’s adventure, Happy Feet (2006), about a tap dancing penguin. In 2008 he stared in Australia, Baz Luhrman’s lush, sweeping historical epic co-starring Jackman and Nicole Kidman as unlikely lovers who meet under the duress of World War II. Adding icing to the cake, the film’s release coincided with People magazine’s annual declaration that for 2008, Jackman was the “Sexiest Man Alive.” From classical romance to cult classic came word that Jackman would revisit his character Wolverine in X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009) in which he was paid a very handsome sum of $20,000,000. Jackman revealed in late June that the second Wolverine movie will begin filming later this year, adding: “It will probably come out a year after that.” Other movies he will be appearing in soon are: Snow Flower and the Secret Fan, Real Steel, and Butter. There is just no slowing this guy down. As for more singing and dancing, Jackman also reportedly entered talks recently for the lead role in a big-screen adaptation of Les Misérables.

Before I give you the enticing information about this, I want to share the other parts of the food and beverage offerings as the Stamford has a total of 16 restaurants and bars to cater for all your needs. The Lobby Court offers refreshing drinks and freshly brewed coffee and tea, and Introbar is a great place to relax in a quiet area with a drink and a nice conversation. Both are on the ground level, and are good places to meet friends before going out to enjoy the delights of Singapore. Situated on the first floor is Café Swiss where you can enjoy buffet breakfasts, lunches, and dinners with a range of traditional Swiss cuisine. For those preferring Asian food, the adjoining Kopi Tiam offers authentic local Singaporean fare. Further delights await you at the excellent Szechuan Court, Inagiku for Japanese, Asian and Halal cuisine at the Asian Market Café, and hidden away in the adjoining Fairmont is the delightful Prego whose entrance awakens your taste buds as you pass through the delicatessen of Italian cheeses, hams and other gourmet offerings. Also located on the 70th floor, this 40seat restaurant serving Northern European essentialist cuisine makes a stunning impact as you enter: three amazing Murano glass chandeliers stretch the length of the room, bedazzling you with their seemingly fluid light. This multiple award winning restaurant is headed by Maitre’d Steven Drewery, and is well attended by his team of waiters, and a very talented sommelier Mathias Negro. You have a choice of an a la carte menu, or the ‘menu degustation’ of either 5 or 7 courses. I opted for the 5 course, which started with a glass of Dom Perignon and amuse gueles. For other discerning guests

As you enter Equinox Restaurant you will be blown away with the amazing view as you make your way down the grand staircase into the amphitheatre style restaurant, which is adorned with four three-storey high teak and rice paper lanterns, Ming-style wooden trellises, and a luminous floor-to-ceiling wall of mother of pearl, all of which

he Scottish-born American steel tycoon and philanthropist left his native land at the age of thirteen to make his fortune in America, and returned as one of the richest and most successful men of his generation. His extensive search for a Highland home led him to the unparalleled estate of Skibo, which for over a thousand years has enchanted all those who have visited it.

In the 10th century its Celtic inhabitants believed Skibo to be a gift from the Gaelic fairies and called it “Schytherbolle” or “fairyland of peace”. The passing years and slow change of the name had in no way dispelled its old magic and Carnegie was immediately captivated.

In 1745, Robert Gray surrendered the estate, and it was later bought by a relative who built a modern house there. Its ownership changed frequently until 1872, when it was bought by Evan Charles SutherlandWalker, who extended the house and improved the grounds. However, the condition of the building had declined by 1897, when wealthy industrialist Andrew Carnegie took a one year lease, with an option to buy.

The construction of Skibo Castle was started by Gilbert de Moravia, the celebrated Bishop of Caithness, around 1186 at Schytherbolle in the southern area of his bishopric. Skibo remained the residence of subsequent bishops until 1545, when the estate was, as a tactical

38

In 1898 he exercised that option for £85,000. However, its condition had declined so much by this time that a further £2 million was spent on improvements, including an increase in area from 1,500 sq. metres to over 5,600 sq. metres, plus the creation of Loch Ospisdale and an 18-hole golf course. Carnegie spent a fortune rebuilding the castle, to create one of the world’s grandest residences. He used Skibo as a base for his intensely active social life and entertained in a grand manner, organising lavish house parties where the great and good, including Rudyard Kipling, Edward Elgar, John D. Rockefeller, King Edward VII and William Gladstone, would mingle with people from all social stations and enjoy the comforts of a family home. Guests were regaled in a grand scale, enjoying traditional Highland hospitality and country pursuits: golf, fishing, shooting, riding and tennis. Skibo stayed in the Carnegie family until 1982, but fell into state of disrepair. In 1990 the 7,500 acre estate was purchased by the international entrepreneur, yachtsman and philanthropist, Peter de Savary, for an estimated £10 million, and he invested a further £30 million restoring the property, with the objective of using the castle as the foundation of a private members club, The Carnegie Club, thus recreating the luxury of an Edwardian sporting estate. If Carnegie was to walk into Skibo today, he would feel perfectly at home. And for members of the exclusive Carnegie Club who have access to the castle and surrounding estate, there are unlimited pleasures in which to indulge. Most members are golf fanatics who come to play on what has to be one of the most scenic courses in the world, the 18-hole Carnegie Championship Links. When my wife Rosemary and I were invited to spend a week at Skibo, our aim from the very outset was to indulge in a tradition of excellence, for we spend a great deal of time in the Highlands and the castle had always been on our wish list of places to visit. Driving up the approach to the Dornoch Bridge we could see in the distance a spectacular double rainbow arching over the Firth towards Skibo Castle. It was perhaps the only clue to the whereabouts of this enchanted and secluded estate, for Skibo is virtually invisible from the public roads that happily signpost you to Dornoch, Spinningdale, Clashmore and Meikle

As we swept round the corner of the single track road that leads up to the castle along the beech-lined avenue, it’s difficult to argue with Andrew Carnegie’s description of Skibo as “Heaven on Earth”. On entering the magnificent portal of the castle one’s eye is immediately drawn to the stained glass windows above the main staircase, one of which depicts Carnegie’s early life. The predominantly oak panelling throughout the castle gives the rooms a warmth without the sombreness of darker wood. Nowhere is this more apparent than in Mr Carnegie’s Dining Room, which is practically wall-to-wall oak from the

When the previous owners, Holt Leisure, decided to sell Skibo, they also ripped out and sold the entire contents of the dining room including the walls. As everything was custom made for the castle, these proved difficult to sell, so it was a relieved dealer that found de Savary willing to buy Carnegie’s dining room back. Absolute THAI 1-on-1 With William Heinecke, MJets Thailand

What was it that encouraged you to start MJets? I tend to fly everywhere myself, so it was not uncommon to see me lined up behind the major aircrafts carriers ready for take off in my favorite Piper Malibu Mirage to fly to my next destination for business or pleasure.

ne of the best-known expatriates in Southeast Asia, Bill Heinecke is the driving force behind the unparalleled successes of the stable of subsidiaries under the Minor Group umbrella. These companies add up to an impressive list of leading global brands across the lifestyle and leisure sectors with a proud heritage that is deeply rooted in Thailand. Minor Corporation manufactures and markets a portfolio of leading fashion, cosmetics and leisure brands, while Minor International currently operates 29 world-class hotels and resorts and more than 1000 branded food service outlets across Asia and the Middle East.

Ultimately as Minor International grew so did the fleet and as the demand for luxury experiences with clients and guests from Minors hotel sector also grew it was only a matter of time before MJets was launched.

William (Bill) E. Heinecke Founder, CEO and Chairman of the Minor Group

How would you describe the progress of MJets since its founding in 2006? MJETS has grown from strength to strength since we began operating. From having 2 planes in 2006, MJETS now owns 3 jets and is anxiously waiting for the delivery of our fourth plane, a Citation CJ4 early in 2012. In addition to the Charter Business, MJETS has also ventured into Ground Handling. In 2009 MJETS was awarded the exclusive rights to run Thailand’s first ever FBO based in Don Mueang International Airport which has been converted into a Private Jet Terminal and was inaugurated in March 2010.

We provide Ground Handling services at this FBO which is equipped with state of the art facilities like a VIP Lounge, on site Immigration, Customs and Quarantine facilities. MJETS has also invested in other infra-structures at Don Mueang Airport. We have constructed 2 aircraft Hangars for parking of those valuable private jet aircrafts. ABSOLUTE THAI Whaling in Antarctica

No Compromise The End To Whaling in Antarctica?

WORDS: Gary Stokes All Photos: Gary Stokes / Sea Shepherd

E

arly December 2010, a small group of passionate individuals departed from Hobart, Australia aboard three black ships. These 88 volunteers were from all walks of life, 23 different countries, of all ages and cultural backgrounds. All standing up for something they strongly believe in, opposing the slaughter of whales under the guise of “scientific research”, in a designated whale sanctuary.

this order by the Australian Government means that the whalers go about their gory business in Australia’s backyard, much to the anger of the majority of the Australian public, and the rest of the world. This is where the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society enters the fray. Known for their more aggressive approach to conservation, the Sea Shepherds are the leaders in what is known as ‘direct action’. They are not a protest organization, they are an anti-poaching organization that enforces international conservation laws to protect marine species and preserve the world’s oceans. They directly intervene against illegal operations to stop them in their tracks, not by lobbying and petitions, but by literally taking the law into their own hands and shutting down poachers. They get this authority from the UN World Charter For Nature, which states “that individuals and NGOs may act to enforce conservation laws when governments fail to do so.”

In 1986 a global moratorium was signed to ban commercial whaling, since then however Japan, Norway & Iceland have continued to kill over 20,000 whales; whales that have been hunted to near extinction, some of which are even now still listed on the IUCN Red List of Critically Endangered Species. However each year Japan sends a fleet of ships to the bottom of the world with a self appointed quota to kill 1035 whales for “research”. Sadly, even though this is happening in the Australian Antarctic Zone, and the Federal Court of Australia has issued a court order prohibiting the whalers from whaling in Australian waters, the lack of political will to enforce

We rendezvoused with the Steve Irwin and drifted together as we saw in the New Year, with two harpoon ships floating stationary on the other side of an ice flow, less than a mile away. The whale wars were about to begin!

ABSOLUTE THAI Whaling in Antarctica

Whilst most of you were getting over the party the night before, we rang in New Year’s Day in true Sea Shepherd style. We launched an action against the harpoon ship, the Yushin Maru #3. In the coming months we would see a lot of this ship, as it was the designated ‘security’ ship of the fleet. There were a total of three harpoon ships, but the Holy Grail for us was the Nisshin Maru, the factory ship a.k.a the “Cetacean Deathstar”. The next month or so was spent playing a game of cat and mouse trying to lose the harpoon ships that tailed us, reporting our position to the Nisshin Maru so it may elude us. We launched a couple of actions against the following ship and eventually lost our tail. This was finally achieved when we launched our two inflatables to lay in ambush behind an iceberg as the Bob Barker sailed off over the horizon. We crept out and raced up behind them at full speed, catching the whalers completely off-guard. We threw smoke bombs, stink bombs, and flares. They retaliated with high-powered water hoses, blasting us with freezing cold Antarctic seawater as we all raced ahead at 25 knots. We finally broke off

the engagement and fled in the opposite direction to then loop around and meet the Bob Barker at a preset rendezvous point. Disaster struck as one of the inflatables that had been slightly damaged in the engagement was now too damaged to continue so we sheltered behind a large tabletop iceberg overnight whilst we waited for 5 hours for the Bob to pick us up. This was probably the most isolated I have ever felt in my life, alone floating in the southern ocean behind an iceberg in freezing conditions with no shelter or hot drinks; you really start to contemplate life in those times and remember why we were all there. We were all asked if we’d risk our lives for the whales, and now we literally were. We eventually followed one of the harpoon vessels to a Panamanian registered tanker that was illegally in Antarctic waters, so we ran them back out, hampering the whaling operations further.

On Feb 9th, 2011 we found what we had been seeking, the Nisshin Maru factory ship, 10,000 tons of evil that didn’t belong in this innocent place. The Nisshin turned and ran as we moved the Bob Barker into position to blockade the slipway, meaning that no whales could be transferred for processing. This meant that no more whales would be killed, so long as we were there. We chased the Nisshin Maru eastwards out of the Ross Sea, past the edge of their whaling grounds 2000+ miles all the way towards Chile. They were trying to run us out of fuel; however they soon discovered that the Bob Barker still had plenty of fuel and was more than capable of circumnavigating Antarctica.

A humpback whale shows it’s appreciation.

February 17th, 2011 started like many of the days recently preceding it. We were on the tail of the whaler’s factory ship, the Nisshin Maru after it had just turned a full 180 degrees and now started to head back westwards. We were just south from Chile when the ships satellite phones started to ring off the hook. The news that was rapidly circling the world was that the whalers had “suspended” the hunt. In our isolated position in the southern ocean we couldn’t really comprehend how big the story was in the world’s media. We followed the Nisshin Maru, still unsure what to make of these press releases. Two days later the Government of Japan ordered the privately operated, government subsidized whaling fleet to come home, ending their whaling season early. The gravity of what had just happened started to sink in throughout the crew of the Bob Barker. We followed the Nisshin Maru that had now turned to a North-westerly direction until she crossed the 60 degree south latitude, leaving the Antarctic Treaty Zone. I was standing on the bridge that night in a seven meter swell, listening to First Officer Peter Hammarstedt and Kuniko Oyakawa, our Japanese translator, as they bid the Nisshin a safe passage home to Japan and warned that, “should they ever even consider to return, we will be there waiting for them. As we never give in, and we never compromise!”

ABSOLUTE THAI toyota Prius

The Queen of Green Toyota Prius

Y

ou could be forgiven for thinking the 2011 Toyota Prius has a big target painted on its side. After all, people like to gun for you when you’re on top, and the Prius has been the king of the green car sales charts for years now. After a major redesign last year, there are no significant changes for the 2011 Toyota Prius. The good news for Toyota is that the Prius itself is better

steering to help make it more agile than before. The 2011 Prius can also seemingly transform from a versatile utility hatchback to a small, hyper-efficient luxury sedan depending on how you equip it. On the higher trim levels, you’ll find high-end appointments like heated leather seats, a solar-powered sunroof (it ventilates the interior when parked), a navigation

Last year, Toyota engineers reduced the car’s aerodynamic drag, and the overall look is now sleeker and sportier. Under the hood, a larger gas engine and stronger electric motor combine for more power and better fuel economy – the Prius has a combined EPA fuel economy estimate of 50 mpg, the best of any conventional hybrid vehicle. At $3 gas, and 15k miles annually, the Prius saves $652/year; at $5 gas, it’s $1100/ year thriftier. Considering the way gas prices are heading and if you like to keep your cars for long periods, you could really rack up a nice ‘refund.’ The newest Prius also has revised suspension tuning and improved electric

system, adaptive cruise control (it matches your speed to the car ahead), a pre-collision system (tightens seatbelts and applies the brakes if a crash is unavoidable) and a lane-departure warning system. There’s even an automated parallel-parking system to help you squeeze into tight downtown parking spaces. There are some downsides to this latest Prius, however. Most concern the interior, such as too many cheapfeeling plastics, an awkward driving position and the lack of an iPod adapter on most models. If these attributes bother you, you’ll certainly want to look around.

In summary, the 2011 Prius deserves to keep its status as the best all-around hybrid. With strong fuel economy, hatchback utility, a reasonable price and a feature list that can range from economy to luxury, the Prius earns its painted bulls-eye. Body Styles, Trim Levels, and Options The 2011 Toyota Prius is available in five trim levels: Prius One, Prius Two, Prius Three, Prius Four and Prius Five. Standard equipment on Prius One includes 15-inch steel wheels, full power accessories, a tiltand-telescoping steering wheel, a height-adjustable driver seat and a 60/40-split-folding rear seat. The Prius Two adds 15-inch alloy wheels, heated side mirrors, automatic headlights, keyless ignition/entry, cruise control and a six-speaker stereo with CD player and auxiliary audio jack. The Prius Three adds Bluetooth and an eight-speaker JBL upgraded stereo with six-CD changer. Prius Four includes this equipment as well as exterior locking buttons for keyless entry, leather upholstery, heated front seats, driver lumbar adjustment and an autodimming mirror. The loaded Prius Five comes with 17inch alloy wheels, fog lamps and LED headlamps with auto-leveling and washers. The Navigation package, available on all but the Prius One and Two, includes a voice-activated touch screen navigation system with real-time traffic, a rearview camera, a four-CD changer (replacing the six-slot), an iPod/USB audio interface and Bluetooth music streaming. The Solar Roof package can be added to the Navigation package and includes a sunroof with a solar-powered ventilation system that cools the car when parked, and remote-activated air-conditioning for cooling the cabin before you enter.

The Advanced Technology package available for Prius V includes all components of the Navigation package plus adaptive cruise control, pre-collision alert system, a lane departure warning system and automated self-parking. Powertrains and Performance The 2011 Toyota Prius is powered by a 1.8-liter fourcylinder engine combined with a pair of electric motor/ generators; they send their power through a specialized continuously variable transmission (CVT). The result is total output of 134 horsepower.

In track testing, the Prius was clocked from zero to 60 mph in 10.1 seconds, which is about average for a hybrid vehicle. The most important number, however, is fuel economy. The EPA estimates the 2011 Prius will return a very impressive 51 mpg city/48 highway and 50 mpg combined.

Highway Safety gave the Prius the highest rating of “Good” in frontal offset and side-impact crashes. Interior Design and Special Features

Every 2011 Toyota Prius comes standard with antilock disc brakes, stability and traction control, front side airbags, side curtain airbags and a driver knee airbag. Optional equipment includes a pre-collision warning system and a lane-departure warning system. In brake testing, the Prius stopped from 60 mph in a short 118 feet.

The 2011 Prius features straightforward climate and audio controls that jut out toward the driver in a “floating console” that provides a storage tray underneath. It’s a nice design that helps maximize cabin space. The digital instrument panel also features a floating layer that displays audio, temperature and trip computer information when the driver touches those controls on the steering wheel, minimizing eye movement. Some drivers might find the overall design a bit too busy-looking, however.

The Prius has not yet been rated using the government’s new, more strenuous 2011 crash tests. According to 2010 ratings (which aren’t comparable to 2011 ratings) the Toyota Prius earned four stars rating in frontal impact protection for both driver and passenger. In side impact testing, the Prius scored five stars for front passengers and four stars for the rear. The Insurance Institute for

Material quality in the Prius is disappointing, with harder and cheaper plastics than other cars in its price range. The corduroy-like texturing on the climate and audio controls seems nice at first, but collects oil from the skin and causes circular dark spots on most buttons. In terms of versatility, though, the Prius is still a champ. The hatchback body style provides more cargo capacity

than a typical midsize sedan, and the backseat offers plenty of space. Sadly, taller drivers still have to contend with a steering wheel that’s placed too far away. There’s a telescoping column, but it doesn’t come out nearly far enough. Driving Impressions The 2011 Toyota Prius features a hyper-quiet cabin, made possible by its part-time electric motivation and extensive use of sound-deadening materials. The ride is also quite comfortable. The electric steering doesn’t provide much in the way of feel, but it’s user-friendly in parking lots and doesn’t become overly boosted on the highway.

Acceleration is far from sprightly, but it’s on par for a hybrid and certainly adequate for most drivers. o golf and palm trees go together? You may not associate the two in your mind since golf has always been the kind of game played in northern climates, but once you come to Thailand you realize that golf is also suited to the tropics where jungle backdrops provide great stages on which to play the game. If you’re on Koh Samui and want to experience golf in tropical climes, then you can take advantage of one of the country’s best courses, Santiburi Samui Country Club, which handily situated a few kilometers away from the island’s north coast. Just the approach to the course is worth the drive. A road leads up through park land, and finally you can look out over the plain beneath and see right across the water to the islands of Koh Pha-ngan and Koh Tao. To say it’s scenic is an understatement, and for once brochures don’t exaggerate the colors either – the greenery is at times pure emerald, making the course a beautiful location, and that’s before you’ve started exploring the course itself. General Manager Derek McKenzie says, “I’ve played at hundreds of courses in the world

the only one on the island which meets international golf course standards. The course is an 18-hole, par 72 championship course with Bermuda grass fairways and tif eagle grass for the greens. The altitudes range from 30 to 290 meters – a considerable variation. The course is roughly adapted to the contours of the massive hill that it’s built upon, and rises in tier-like stages up the slopes. You’ll also find a couple of creeks here as well as a waterfall, though these may be dry in the hot season. It’s impossible to walk the course but not because of the heat: it’s too big and you’d have to trudge up and down the hills. “Golf carts are essential here,” says Derek McKenzie. “Since the slopes are so dramatic, you’re chauffeured

It was specially designed to be as beautiful as possible and the course’s two architects Phirapon Namatra and Edward Thiele succeeded admirably. Their task was a difficult one, due to the nature of the terrain. A lot of rock and boulders had to be blasted before any progress could be made. The slopes were fearsome, too. They had to be in order for the course to be what it is today: an unusually challenging and exciting venue. It’s also

views over the course and the north coast. Definitely worth bringing your camera, by the way. The restaurant opens out into a vista allowing you to see hills, islands and always the ubiquitous palms.

The friendly chauffeurs help you to take full advantage of the complexity of the course. You’ll find yourself driving your ball across a small rocky valley at one point, or up the hillside, or just facing challenges that require skill and a steady hand. Some of the perspectives lend themselves to what seem to be optical illusions: things aren’t always what they seem up here on the slopes; the ball doesn’t fly towards its target quite as it should. No matter which part of the course you find yourself on, you’ll always be faced with decisions to make. You simply can’t play on auto-pilot. The fairways meander quite a bit at various points, and very often there are those tricky slopes to be taken into consideration.

Even if you don’t play golf, it’s worth coming here. It’s an extremely relaxing setting and unlike many clubs, it’s open to the public. Come and enjoy drinks, snacks or main courses which feature both Thai and international cuisine. The Club House also features changing rooms and a pro shop, stocking a select range of articles and clothing. You can also rent anything you need, so you don’t need to pack too much golfing equipment if you’re coming on holiday. Prices are extremely reasonable. The service is always friendly and efficient. Derek explains that the staffing of the course is an allimportant ingredient. “We have 290 employees altogether, including the caddies and the greens’ staff. That means we can afford a lot of attention to detail and to making sure our guests have a great experience when they come here to play.”

The Club House has been as thoughtfully designed as the course itself. It’s a beautiful, contemporary-style building which is situated so visitors can take in the

Derek’s own role is pivotal; he has to ensure that the guests’ needs and wishes are all catered for. He’s exactly the right kind of person for this job as he’s a golfing professional himself. Just 39 years old, he has done that rare thing: combined a love of sport with his profession. Derek hails from Scotland, went pro when he was only 16 years old and then went to Germany where he became a golf teacher. He next went to Egypt where he spent 5 years and set up a golfing academy. He then went to Spain where he set up a further academy in Mallorca, before coming to Koh Samui. Derek brings with him not only golfing expertise, but knowledge of languages too. He speaks some Spanish and Arabic, but his real ability lies in his fluent German, which he uses almost daily for communicating with German-speaking guests. Derek and his team are responsible for not just the daily running of the course but also setting up the various promotions. Currently, golfers can take advantage of the weekly sports day promotions until the end of December: every Wednesday, except official holidays, you can opt for 18 holes for 2,700 Baht or 9 for 1,400 Baht. A special twilight promotion also exists; 1,500 Baht includes a 9-hole green fee, golf cart and caddie fee. The Santiburi Samui Country Club also hosts the annual Bangkok Airways-SAT Queen’s Cup. This year’s event took place in June with players coming to Koh Samui oozing ability and skill, and giving brilliant performances and a further boost to Koh Samui’s reputation as a prime holiday destination. It’s hardly surprising that the Santiburi Samui Country Club’s reputation has grown so favourably over the years. It’s now established in the minds of both amateurs and professionals in the region and if you’re in Thailand, it’s worth coming to Koh Samui to experience golf in such a delightfully exotic setting. Life Looks Better Through Genuine Lenses

during World War II, Ray-Ban became widely popular because of their special green lenses that absorb UV and infrared rays.

ince we’re in the tropics, sunglasses are a lot more than just image accessories. A pair of sunglasses is also a health investment, says specialist DKSH, and should guard against the perils of UV light. It’s easy to find a cheap pair anywhere on Koh Samui, but they may not be professionally made, and you need to make sure you have adequate protection.

Sunglasses are one of the most desired brand name products besides leather goods and clothing. Luxury brands such as Prada, Bulgari, or Tiffany and Co. are available at affordable prices. You may be surprised at just how little you need to spend when you wish to acquire a luxury product.

DKSH opened up the first of their stores, Sunglass Hut, on the island at Samui Park Avenue, the outdoor shopping mall attached to the Samui Airport. The store stocks many of the finest names in eyewear, including the ever popular Ray-Ban.

However, how can you trust if your beloved pair of sunglasses is real? As with most well-known brands, fake products are found all over the country. Just look around anywhere in Thailand and you’ll quickly see how many supposed Ray-Bans there are to be found. Sometimes the price is as high for a fake product as it is for a real one. your pair is the real deal? One way is to be an expert on the product – which probably means you actually work for the brand in question. But there’s another, easier, way too.

It’s also worth mentioning that Sunglass Hut also offers a generous 14-day right of exchange. So you can be sure you love your look, and if not, you’re welcome to bring the eyewear back.

It’s also worth mentioning that Sunglass Hut also offers a generous 14-day right of exchange. So you can be sure you love your look, and if not, you’re welcome to bring the eyewear back. Glasses are available in a whole spectrum of styles and materials to choose from. The store also offers children’s sunglasses. It’s hard to get better deals on sunglasses where you can be sure that what you’re buying are originals that will stand the test of time and always remain in style.

For further authentication DKSH provides a certificate of guarantee that also acts as a one-year warranty. Wear your sunglasses with confidence, knowing they’re as original as you are! If you’re looking for quality sunglasses, look for the DKSH sticker.
