June and July are some of the best months to be in Thailand; yes, it is hot, but that brings out the short shorts, mini-skirts, and thin navel revealing t-shirts. If you are new to Thailand, feel free to drop your aircon down to 18C. For those of us who have been here a while 25C works. But with all the hot beauties walking around, you’re bound to sweat regardless. And to make things even hotter, we’ve added some gorgeous and sexy photos of Kim Kardashian. This foxy minx with her curvaceous body is every man’s dream. I think I see about 30 dream girls a day here in this country. For other recreations that do not require girl watching, check out our article on the top 10 adrenaline adventures. Thailand has an abundance of natural beauty that is fun to be viewed from the air, while underwater, or while zipping by it on a zip line. And even though it’s 40C, the hot springs scattered throughout the country will still reenergize you for another night out on the town.

BOON LUANG AND PHI TA KHON FESTIVAL June - July, 2012, Dan Sai District, Loei District and Province
T
he Phi Ta Khon festival is unique to the Dan Sai district in Loei Province and reflects the local Isan belief in ghosts and spirits. Held once a year, it is part of a grand merit-making festival known as the “Boon Luang” festival.
In a lively re-enactment of the tale, the young men of the community dress up as “spirits” wearing long trailing costumes made from colourful strips of cloth sewn together. Contact information: LOEI TOURISM CO-ORDINATOR CENTER Tel: +66 (0) 4281 2812, (0) 4281 1405 Fax: +66 (0) 4281 1480
The origins of the Phi Ta Khon Festival can be found in the tale of Lord Buddha’s last great incarnation before attaining Enlightenment. In Buddhist accounts, it is said that when Prince Vessandara, the Buddha’s penultimate incarnation, returned to his city, it was such a joyous occasion that the village spirits came forth to join the welcoming parade. This very colourful and vibrant Phi Ta Khon procession is the central focus of the celebrations.

he Significance of Crafted Candles as Buddhist Lent Merit-Making Offerings.
The Candle Festival of Ubon Ratchathani province features a procession of ornately-carved traditional beeswax candles of various shapes and sizes. Buddhism, Buddhist traditions and beliefs are central forces that shape the local way of life and the customs and traditions related to this Buddhist festival have been carefully preserved by local communities.
Villagers actively engage in merit-making during the Buddhist Lent, making visits to temples to make offerings of food and items for daily use. The presentation of items that provide light, such as candles, lanterns and lamp oil, is deemed to be particularly important as these facilitate the study of holy scriptures and meditation by providing illumination to the monks, physically and spiritually.
As the seasonal monsoon rains descend over the kingdom, it marks the beginning of the Buddhist “rain retreat” and the Buddhist Lent, or Phansa, during which all Buddhist monks retreat to the temples. This is also an auspicious time for Buddhist ordinations as it marks a period of spiritual renewal.
Bringing together the Traditional and the Contemporary To help keep ancient customs and traditions alive, the provincial authorities have added more contemporary elements to the traditional festival in an attempt to create broader appeal and attract younger visitors. In addition to the exhibition of wax sculptures by the participating international artists from Japan, Nepal, Belgium, France, Ukraine, Latvia, Spain, Brazil, and host country, Thailand, the festival programme now includes other art and design-related highlights featuring handcrafted candles workshops and sound art, film and photo, interactive art, art camp, and Kids Art Village. Other attractions, such as the Ubon Art Street, the Ubon Weekend Market and Laeng Pla Ploen Market, traditional and contemporary folk music performances, are all designed to add to the festive ambience of the event.
Known as “Khao Phansa”, the Buddhist Lent is a time devoted to study and meditation. Buddhist monks remain within the temple grounds and do not venture out for a period of three months starting from the first day of the waning moon of the eighth lunar month (in July) to the fifteenth day of the waxing moon of the eleventh lunar month (in October). In former times, this is done to prevent monks from trampling upon rice paddies when they venture out to receive offerings from the villagers. As the province prepares for the Buddhist Lent, men folk, ordained as well as laymen, with artistic skills set about the task of moulding and sculpting Lenten candles. As these works of art are to be presented as Buddhist merit-making offerings, the artisans pour their heart and

ABSOLUTE THAI HOT SPRINGS IN THAILAND
HOT SPRINGS IN THAILAND words: Dan White
T
here is a distinctly odd feeling about hiking down a jungle path, sweating in the humidity, spying a cascading stream that looks invitingly cool and refreshing, only to discover that when you plunge in, it is almost as hot as a fresh cup of tea. Once you have absorbed the shock though and reconciled yourself to the heat, you will find that you are, most likely, in the process of doing yourself some good.
consequent perspiration you undergo when soaking in a hot spring has a deeply cleansing effect. The specific mineral content of each spring will offer benefits unique to that one place. According to the principles of Chinese medicine the spring also passes on ‘qi’ or the life-force energy of all five elements of life: the first being earth or the ground from which the spring emerges; the second being metal in the shape of the various minerals found in the water; the third being the water itself; the fourth being wood embodied in the surrounding trees; and the fifth being fire as in the heat of the water and the heat of the sun shining down. This means hot springs have a balancing effect in terms of the cosmos.
There are healing powers in natural hot springs. The combination of temperature and minerals in the water being thought to relieve stress, cure ailments, alleviate backache, salve skin conditions and promote all-around health. Like a natural sauna, the heat and

According to Taoist philosophy, relaxing in a hot spring allows our qi to run more smoothly through all of the groups of our ‘meridians’ or the ‘yin’ and ‘yang’ channels for the life force. When qi runs in a balanced way along the meridians, it benefits all of our internal organs. It is not only according to Chinese medicine that the benefits of hot springs are known. In Western medicine too, experts acknowledge that the effects of warm, minerally enriched water are good for you. It gradually increases the temperature of the body, which kills harmful viruses and germs. It also increases blood circulation and cell oxygenation by increasing hydrostatic pressure on the body, the increased blood flow helping to dissolve and eliminate toxins.
According to Taoist philosophy, relaxing in a hot spring allows our qi to run more smoothly through all of the groups of our ‘meridians’ or the ‘yin’ and ‘yang’ channels for the life force.
The flow of oxygen-enriched blood throughout the body also brings improved nourishment to vital organs and tissues. Bathing in thermal water also increases the body’s metabolism, stimulating the secretions of the intestinal tract and the liver and therefore aiding digestion. Trace amounts of minerals, such as carbon dioxide, sulfur, calcium, magnesium, and lithium, are absorbed through the skin. The healing effects this brings includes stimulation of the immune system, leading to enhanced immunity, physical and mental relaxation and the production of endorphins. It is also said that hot springs contain high amounts of negative ions, which can help promote feelings of psychological and physical well-being. The water, especially that high in sculpture, can have a therapeutic effect on skin diseases, such as dermatitis, psoriasis and fungal infections. Soaking in the hot water increases the heart rate and lowering blood pressure. It can also aid in good sleep. It has long been known that the combination of warmth and buoyancy is highly beneficial to those who suffer from arthritis. The buoyancy of the water causes the muscles to relax, and reduces stress on the joints which helps to free movement.

ABSOLUTE THAI HOT SPRINGS IN THAILAND
Scientists tell us a hot spring is brought into being by the emergence of geothermally heated water from inside the Earth’s crust, and you find them all over the world. The deeper into the earth’s mantle, the hotter the rock gets. If water seeps deeply enough down into the Earth’s crust, it will be boiled as if by an electric kettle. Natural hot springs have been discovered in several areas across Thailand. Many of them have been developed into tourist attractions, and some are now purpose built resorts offering health packages combining mineral baths, Thai traditional massage, and fitness facilities. In the north, near Chiang Mai, San Kamphaeng has two of them where they offer a complete course of health treatments. Further into the mountains near Pai in Mae Taeng district, is the Pa Pae hot spring. This is quieter, less developed and set within a well-maintained park in a scenic valley. Heading north from Chiang Mai, to Fang district, there are about fifty hot springs all within a ten-acre forested radius. Three of the springs boil continuously shooting jets of water into the air. Water temperature ranges from 90 to 100 degrees, and the area around is beautifully maintained with excellent facilities for bathing. The northern region also boasts hot springs in Lampang where the Chae Son hot springs are combined with waterfalls in a national park, and in Mae Hong Son at Pong Dueat where four geysers shoot bursts of water high into the air.

In the south, there are a series of hot springs around Krabi. Klong Thom is about 70 km from Krabi town heading south towards Trang. It is deep in the forest on the floor of a valley. The water cascades across rocks with natural bath tubs hollowed out through the ages. Effectively, you sit and boil in a natural Jacuzzi as the fast flowing water cascades over you. Nearby, in deep jungle, is Si Morakot Emerald Pool. One walks about a kilometer up a heavily wooded path and suddenly the jungle opens out into a watery clearing, the luminous green waters shimmering in the sun. Tham Khao Plu Hot Spring is between Chumphon and Chaiya. There are three hot springs there named ‘Auey Ar-ree Than Thip’, ‘Amarit Thara’ and ‘Preuksa Chonlathan’.

In each, hot mineral water rises from the ground with a temperature of 55-56 degrees Celsius. Ban Bo Dan Hot Springs in Phang Nga are located a few kilometers south of Thai Muang town. The waters have quite a high mineral content, including calcium and sodium, and also various iodides and chlorides. The location is equipped with a swimming pool and spa and a long sandy beach is close by. Raksawarin Park and hot springs in Ranong are some of Thailand’s most famous. In Central Thailand, in Ban Samo Thong Hot Spring near Uthai Thani, the water is so hot that it can boil an egg in 5 minutes. Bo Khlueng Hot Stream in Ratchaburi flows at 60 degrees Celsius all year round from the nearby Tanaosi hills.
These hot springs have had royal approval ever since King Rama V visited Ranong in 1890, and named the road to the hot springs ‘Chon Ra-u’, meaning ‘hot water’.
In Thailand, hot springs also have a mystically ‘pure’ significance. In Ranong, for instance, water from its chief attractions, Raksawarin Park Arboretum, is considered so pure that it was used during important ceremonies to celebrate the 60th Birthday of King Bhumibhol, Thailand’s current monarch. These hot springs have had royal approval ever since King Rama V visited Ranong in 1890, and named the road to the hot springs ‘Chon Ra-u’, meaning ‘hot water’. At nearly 65 degrees year round these waters are indeed very hot, and this is one of the most visited of all the hot springs in the Kingdom. All of these places are popular destinations for a day out amongst Thais. Not only does a dip in a hot spring do you good, it will put a smile on the faces of the children, and give everyone a sociable focus for a picnic and a chat.

s the second daughter to high-powered Los Angeles lawyer Robert Kardashian and his wife, Kris Houghton, Kim Kardashian was immediately dropped into a comfortable California lifestyle that included posh living arrangements, a Catholic school, a sweet ride at 16, and a childhood friendship with another future socialite named Paris Hilton. In 1989, the marriage between Kardashian’s parents disintegrated and her family makeup changed considerably. Her mom became Kris Jenner, from a marriage to former Olympic gold medalist Bruce Jenner, and she gained a sizable set of step-siblings, fronted by Brody Jenner. IMAGE: Helga Esteb / Shutterstock.com
The relationships between Kardashian and blues musician Ray-J changed her level of fame quickly and substantially. In 2007, adult film giant Vivid released a sex tape that they had filmed together. The new family unit went the way of The Osbournes and become a pop culture favourite later on, but during her high school years, Kardashian remained close with her father. Apart from his involvement in the trial of O.J. Simpson, he had become far more active in recent years in the music industry than in the field of law. As such, Kardashian became gainfully employed at Movie Tunes, her father’s business that was responsible for promoting musical artists. At 20, she married producer Damon Thomas, but the death of her father in 2003 sent Kardashian on a new journey to find her own entrepreneurial talents. Kardashian and her husband divorced in 2004, and her first attempt at self-employment came in the music video and commercial industry as a wardrobe stylist. Unfortunately, this venture was unsuccessful, so she went back to the drawing board for her next professional makeover. Having not succeeded adequately the first time, Kim Kardashian tried again in the style sector, but put her attention toward closet arrangements rather than specific wardrobe choices. Her job was to renovate closet space and find ways to better organize the clothing of her clients. After getting good results from revamping the storage space of boxing legend Sugar Ray Leonard’s wife, Bernadette, Kardashian took a shot at redoing Paris Hilton’s clothing collection. Apart from the fact that Hilton’s clothing was so extensive that it required the space of a fully-modified bedroom rather than a

The relationships between Kardashian and blues musician Ray-J changed her level of fame quickly and substantially. In 2007, adult film giant Vivid released a sex tape that they had filmed together. While the two principals claimed that the sex tape was never intended for public audiences, it provided an immediate jump-start to Kardashian’s career, making her an immediate internet fixture and being perfectly timed to coincide with a spread in the December 2007 issue of Playboy and the launch of her new reality TV series, Keeping Up with the Kardashians. The show, which followed her and her family members through the maintaining of their store, D-A-S-H, and their various personal challenges, became a favourite of female viewers while offering more views of the woman who had caught so much male attention from her sexcapades of earlier. This didn’t sit too well with Paris Hilton, who had previously featured Kardashian as a guest star on The Simple Life. A catty socialite war ensued when Paris Hilton referred to her former best friend’s formidable posterior as “gross” and “disgusting.” Kim responded by candidly stating: “If Paris Hilton thinks my butt looks gross I really don’t care. At least I have a butt.” The war of words between the two socialites only upped Kardashian’s club cred, and she flaunted her assets further through endorsement contracts with Bongo Jeans, as well as Famous Stars and Straps. Through the rest of 2008, Kardashian continued her pop culture invasion through a fitness DVD called Workout with Kim Kardashian, a Razzy-nominated movie role in Disaster Movie and as a featured contestant on Dancing with the Stars. Thanks to a background that is predominantly Armenian, her curves have attracted infinite attention and earned maximum exposure, courtesy of a Playboy spread, a much-ballyhooed sex tape and a Twitter feed that proves that Kardashian is anything but shy about showing off her physicality. Is she shy about anything? Well, yes – dancing in nightclubs, according to her. All ill-timed public dancing displays aside, it’s Kardashian’s combination of raw exotic beauty and sexy confidence that makes her ideal dating material for a lot of men. Given the chance to take her out, just stick to a limo ride and a fancy dinner at a high-priced Los Angeles eatery, rather than crashing a trendy club for a dance-off on ‘80s night. While she appears to fit the bill of fun-loving California girl quite nicely, Kardashian spent the first four years of her 20s as a married woman. Her husband at the time was Damon Thomas, but after their split, she continued to date within the music industry through courtships with Nick Lachey, Nick Cannon and her partner in celebrity sex tape crime, Ray-J. In recent years, Kardashian developed a liking for athletes: she enjoyed a long-term relationship with Reggie Bush and an alleged fling with Cristiano Ronaldo. Anurat Tiyaphorn, a successful corporate lawyer from Bangkok, was the man who decided to give his vision a birth. Twenty years ago he came across Kan Tiang Beach in Koh Lanta. It was isolated, remote and indescribably beautiful. Anurat was awe struck. Having purchased the land, he was then left with the choice of what he would do with it. At first, as an enthusiastic yachtsman, he simply wanted to develop the area as a place for himself and other serious sailors to enjoy the
n the hospitality industry, being one of the few, rather than one of the many, takes more than the simple act of simply flinging luxury and money at guests or potential guests. To be one of the few that mange to merge function with magic, you have to have the ‘vision thing’. The people who created the Pimalai Resort and Spa at the far southern end of Koh Lanta have the ‘vision thing’ coming out of their ears. Pimalai is an industry lesson in environmental awareness, tasteful design and a simple passion for the natural things in life.

great combination of sea and winds that bless this corner of the Andamans. He then realised he also wanted to give something back. “I didn’t want to be selfish. I wanted to give something back to the country and, in particular, Koh Lanta.” He was also concerned that although there were resorts now springing up across the island that not all of them maintained the priority of preserving the very nature that makes Koh Lanta so special. On his estate, Anurat decided things would be done strictly with an eye to preserving the environment.
The name ‘Pimalai’ is a derivation of the ancient Indian language of Sanskrit and translates, appropriately, as a ‘little patch of heaven’. The Pimalai Resort you see today is the result of those priorities. The beautiful white sand beach and warm Andaman water leads up to the same forest that always existed. As Franck de Lestapis, affable Bordeaux native and the General Manager of Pimalai from the start of the project, explains, “We made sure that almost no trees were cut down to make the villas. If the architect found that trees were in the way of his design then it was the design that had to change rather than felling the trees.” This meticulous approach to complementing the environment is a defining mission at the Pimalai Resort and Spa. Within the resort, more than 90% of the flora and fauna uniquely indigenous to the deep southern rain forest remains intact, and Pimalai retains skilled forestry workers on staff to keep it that way. They have a full cycle water treatment system, and they also have a system of using natural rainwater and run-off from nearby mountains in order to minimise demand on the natural water table. The design of the hotel buildings does not impinge on the beach in any way. They have also constructed a floating jetty rather than a permanent pier to service their fleet of boats in order not to damage the marine environment. Avoidance of the use of damaging chemicals and detergents as well as emphasizing recycling in waste management also play a large part in the systemic management of the resort. Guests staying at the Pimalai are immersed in an environment of concern for the natural surroundings, and it’s a concern that is constructively contagious. These priorities mean that although The Pimalai Resort covers a vast area, you can hardly see it. Luxury villas, restaurants, swimming pool and spa and staff quarters are all interspersed within the rambling forest.

Given that there are 119 units ranging from deluxe rooms through Beachside Pavilion suites to two and even three bedroom Pool Villas, this is an astonishing achievement. The accommodation itself is designed with more than a nod to traditional southern architectural style merged with a relaxed, almost colonial style, décor with dark wood floors, four poster beds plenty of places designed for lounging both inside and outside, coupled with state of the art facilities. Pimalai also offers a variety of experiences according to where one is situated. One can be high up on the hill sipping an aperitif in one’s own private pool or relaxing in the adjoining sala looking down at the amazing panoramic views of the bay laid out below you.
Guests staying at the Pimalai are immersed in an environment of concern for the natural surroundings, and it’s a concern that is constructively contagious. These pool villas offer a splendid isolation and are designed in such a way that one can hardly see any of the surrounding structures. As a place to decompress from hard work in the city or a long flight, one couldn’t find a better place. Or, if one prefers, once can be closer to the beach, the main pool and the restaurants in one of the beach pavilions, the silky white sand at your doorstep. To get around the pathways one is transported in one of a fleet of small cars that negotiate the hill was too steep and sharp jungle bends. They can be summoned within 5 minutes by a simple call to reception, and they are quiet enough to be unnoticeable from all lounging positions. It is hardly surprising that a resort owned by a Thai and managed by a Frenchman puts heavy emphasis on the joys of dining. As Anurat says, “For me, all the luxury in the world is meaningless if not accompanied by great food and great service.” There are five separate eateries at Pimalai, Spice and Rice being the flagship eatery serving a selection of the finest Thai cuisine. Franck explains, “We have our own farming project in Chiang Mai allowing us to grow organic vegetables and herbs. We know the ingredients are pure here, because we grow them and harvest them ourselves.” The al fresco restaurant on the beach is the perfect place for sundown cocktails listening to the sounds of live, Mediterranean gypsy guitar. Pimalai may be quiet, but there are a host of things to do. The Spa offers a huge range of treatments and massages that you can also enjoy in the privacy of your villa

including tension relief and sports massages or cooling scrubs and wraps. The marine and outdoor activities at Pimalai reflect the soaring beauty of the environment. The resort has a fleet of boats of one sort or another with a permanent crew who has known these seas since childhood. These are some of the best sailing waters in Asia, and when it comes to yachting Pimalai reflects the passions of its owner. For those who want to see the coral and the marine life the sunset cruise takes you to nearby Koh Haa where one can relax on the luxury motor cruiser with a glass of wine and smoked salmon interspersed with dips in the almost luminous waters of the bays populated with fish of every shape and colour. Koh Lanta is not overly developed. Although no one knows how future development will affect the island as a whole, one can be sure that one corner of the island the natural environment will remain unspoiled. It has jealous protectors. That is part of the vision that is Pimalai Resort and Spa.
The Spa offers a huge range of treatments and massages that you can also enjoy in the privacy of your villa.

Compliance with house rules will help prevent conflicts among owners Property managers must uphold the justice whilst being diplomatic b y: D e x t e r N o r v i l l e

ost of the common issues that many residents in a condominium building or a housing estate experience result from some other residents’ incompliance with the house rules. These include, for instance, loud noises from neighboring units, pets in pet-restricted building, parking in someone else’s parking space or disposal of garbage bags outside the garbage room. There are also many cases whereby residents do not break the house rules but still create conflicts with their neighbors in some other ways, such as watering plants at a balcony and spilling water to units on lower floors, or smoking in own units but the smoke gets in others’. Most of these issues can be avoided if owners ensure that the estate has a set of sensible house rules. They also need a competent estate manager who can ensure that all residents are compliant and also can settle conflicts among owners when they occur.
When there are conflicts among owners, an intervention from the property manager is needed in most cases. Easy but it is not a skill set that everyone has. The property manager must go and discuss directly with the offending resident or owner to see if there is a simple misunderstanding or if the owner has blatantly ignored the house rules. Once the property management team totally understands the facts of the matter, they can then rectify the issue.
After all, living in any situation, owners must have respect for their neighbors. This is the best way to avoid conflicts and ensure a truly harmonious living.
The property manager also needs to remain unbiased throughout the entire process and should let all parties know they are dealing with the issue at hand by communicating to the owner that has caused the issue and the owners who have made the complaint.

Feeling Extra Adventurous?

T
hailand is sometimes known as The Golden Land due to the warmth of its beaches, year-round perfect weather and the hospitality of its people. It’s also a land brimming with opportunities for exploration, excitement and exploits. Here are 10 Thailand adventures guaranteed to get your adrenaline pumping.
escort you through geologic labyrinths, vertical caves and collapsed caves. Combine your journey with forest hikes or rafting to see even more of the Thai landscape. 9. Jungle Trekking Get intimate with the wilds of Thailand by hitting the unmarked trails. We recommend at least a 3-day trek to see mountain ridges, rainforests and experience camping in the beautiful Thai wilderness. The folks at Active Thailand will provide an informed English-speaking guide who will pick you up at your Chiang Mai City hotel and arrange all your food and camping needs. You just need to bring dry socks, SPF and a sense of adventure.
10. Caving Get to the heart of Thailand by exploring ancient caves and tremendous caverns like those in the Pang Mapha District of the Mae Hong Son Province. Here you can venture underground and discover wildlife, history and geology. Expert guides, like those at Cave Lodge, will

8. Elephant Riding Taking an elephant ride through local Thai villages and surrounding forests is an experience no visitor to Thailand should miss. The type and length of the ride can be catered specifically to you: a half-hour ride through a local village or a 5-day trek through the jungles of Northern Thailand. Those with the endurance and the daring can even incorporate mountain biking and rafting into the trek. Read about several elephant rides with unique destinations. 7. Waterfall Abseiling Number 7 is perfect for those who find regular rock climbing or repelling to be a bit mundane. Throw in the force of a waterfall, and now you’re talking adventure. Many hotels and travel guides have programs that allow you to abseil, or repel, down Thailand’s beautiful and powerful waterfalls. You’ll feel your heart in your chest as you lean over the edge of a 35-foot waterfall and the ground slowly slips beneath your feet. Learn more about waterfall abseiling at Doi Inthanon in Chiang Mai. 6. Whitewater Rafting Relatively new to the Thai tourist market, whitewater rafting is quickly being added to many adventure trek itineraries. Rush the rapids in Southern Thailand’s Phang Na province, and you’re guaranteed an exhilarating ride. Book with Phuket Tours, and you’ll score a visit to the Ton Pariwat Wildlife Sanctuary and an elephant ride through the jungle. 5. Mountain Biking Give the elephants a break and hit the Thai wilderness on 2 wheels. Mountain biking is supremely popular in this country and there are many different tours from which to choose. M.T. Hill Tours offers rides lasting from a few hours to a full day, but one of their more interesting tours takes place at night. Explore the bustling Bangkok City on a 3-hour bike tour; the ride ends relatively early, so you can hit the town once you’ve turned in your bike. Just promise us you’ll change out of your bike shorts. 4. Snorkeling Dive into the marine life just off the coast of Thailand. Similan Diving Safaris offers a full range of diving programs that will teach you how to explore reefs or get lost in the blue during an open-water dive. Located in Phang-Nga, you’ll peacefully roam the underwater beauty of Similan and Surin Marine National Islands.

3. Sea Kayaking Since you’re having so much fun enjoying Thailand’s scenery and wildlife, why not do a little to preserve it? And, of course, still have fun. Sea Canoe is an eco-friendly company that has operated in Southern Thailand for over 18 years. With offices in Phuket, Krabi and Koh Samuir, Sea Canoe can offer adventures in Khao Sok, Trang and Tarutao. Their staff is knowledgeable, and they offer a multitude of locations for kayaking adventures, ranging from a few hours to over 6 days. 2. Zip Lining From the sea to the sky, our next adventure takes you through the canopies of the Chiang Mai rainforests. You’ll ride in your single-person swing and cruise a cable suspended through the 1500-year old Thai rainforest. Upgrade from a single swing to the complete adventure package offered by Flight of the Gibbon, and you can rock climb, mountain bike and stay in authentic Thai village home stays. 1. Skydiving We don’t need to tell you what an amazingly scary experience skydiving is; if you’re looking to inject your vacation with pure adrenaline, this is the extreme. The weather is Thailand is good 365 days a year, so that means there is jumping every single day. Strap yourself to a jumpmaster, and experience the thrill of a lifetime.

And there’s golf. OK, it is not the most adventurous, but it is the most popular sport in the Kingdom. Golf arrived in Thailand during the reign of King Rama V one hundred years ago. It was first played by nobles and other elitists of high society, but since then, things have certainly changed. Over the past decade or so, the popularity of golf in Thailand has escalated; played both by local Thais and visiting foreign tourists and expatriates. Meeting to the recent needs of an average of 400,000 foreign golfers coming to Thailand annually, golf in Thailand has turned into a huge local industry with new courses constantly being churned out. Golf alone is annually bringing an income of 8 billion baht into the local economy. Thailand offers over two hundred courses with high standards. Internationally renowned courses can be found in tourist-spots like Bangkok, Pattaya and Phuket. There are an abundance of reasons why golf in Thailand became so popular. First, if you compare the cost to most golfing countries in the world, membership and course fees are exceptionally low. The general low cost of travel in Thailand itself makes the country ideal for cost-efficiency minded tourists. Also, many of the golf courses in Thailand have been designed by top names in the game such as Jack Nicklaus, Nick Faldo and Greg Norman.

entara Grand Beach Resort & Villas Hua Hin is the Grande Dame beach resort of Southeast Asia, where modern functionality has been interwoven into colonial style; a harmoniously compatible synergy of expected modern functionality showcased in timeless colonial style elegance. Starting life as the 14 bedroom Railway Hotel in 1922, it was built by the Hotel Division of The State Railway of Thailand for 128,366.75 Thai baht on land leased from Prince Narai. It was designed by Italian court architect A. Riggazi. The first guests checked in on the 26th of October 1922.

It was the region’s most luxurious hotel. The hotel also stared in the movie The Quest and more famously as Hotel Le Phnom in The Killing Fields. This stunning beach front property was bought by Centara Hotels & Resorts and has progressively been expanded to 207 rooms and suites and 42 villas retaining the Art Deco style of the 1920s. The hotel was previously known as Sofitel Centara Grand Resort & Villas Hua Hin, with the conclusion of the joint marketing agreement with Sofitel on January 1, 2012

was re-branded to Centara Grand Beach Resort & Villas Hua Hin. Most recently, 100 rooms and suites in the Colonial Wing have been renovated, and a fully equipped health club and kid’s club was added to the portfolio of guest facilities. The Railway Restaurant has been renovated while retaining its 1920s charm and has a fresh new menu. Our driver collected us from Centara Grand just after 8:30 a.m. on a Sunday morning for a two and half hour comfortable drive to a very hospitable welcome. As we had arrived ahead of schedule and the resort was running at full occupancy, our suite was not ready. This was not an issue as we were escorted to the club lounge for breakfast. Eggs Benedict and a pot of freshly brewed Earl Grey tea turned the wait into a pleasurable experience.

We were staying in the Ocean Suite which is at the last corner suite on the first floor of the Colonial Wing. Walking into the suite we first entered a spacious lounge that had a very residential feel; a beverage station to make tea and coffee with a fridge below. A Philips Sensea coffee maker with Douwe Egbert pods of dark roast or decaffeinated coffee and a pair of bone China mugs; the quality is in the detail. On the right hand side of the suite is a seating area with two armchairs and a sofa. Centrally located was a large mahogany cabinet with a flat screen LCD TV and CD/ DVD player, and on the left hand side of the lounge was a writing desk that could double as a dining table. The suite, as expected, is fully air conditioned to maintain the room at the desired temperature. In addition, to add to the art deco 1920s feel, there are five bladed rotating fans over both the bed and the lounge seating area. Moving air adds another layer of comfort to the stay. In the bedroom is a king-sized bed with flexible reading lights on either side. Also, there is an armchair with foot stall and a second LCD TV. Leading off the bedroom is a walk into a wardrobe with baggage storage space. The spacious bathroom has a separate rain-shower and bathtub. The bathroom amenities were significantly more than just shower gel and shampoo. Here, I had mouthwash, a tooth brush, branded toothpaste, comb,

The next morning I woke just after 7 a.m. and was impressed that by 7:30 a.m. a copy of the day’s Bangkok Post was hanging on my suite door. The indulgent luxury of taking a mug of Earl Grey Tea out onto the balcony and sipping and reading the paper looking out onto the ocean is a wonderful feeling. At lunchtime I enjoyed the ‘bistronomy’ of the new menu at the Railway Restaurant. An eclectic mix of armchair and sofa seating, and a classically simple elegant place setting; white linen place mat, silver cutlery, plain crystal glassware and white line napkins. ABSOLUTE THAI Superyachts in Asia
Superyachts in Asia How the Asian market is embracing the last bastion of true luxury in its own style. words: Michael Aumock
A
I have been to three yacht shows throughout Asia in the last month, and I have observed one thing for certain. The Asian appetite for the luxury lifestyle that yachting provides is voracious, and only getting more so as the market increases and choices multiply.
t long last, Superyachts have arrived in Asia. One of the oldest dangling carrots of aspirational wealth in the Western world has finally found its way to the Orient, and brought the charms and challenges of the international yachting lifestyle with it.

For most of us, a superyacht is the thing of dreams: a yacht big enough to live on, be treated like a king on, land your helicopter on, etc. An obscure fantasy that most people haven’t even seen enough of in real life to accurately fill in the blanks of what it really looks like, or feels like to be on one.
The thing with Superyachts is that they are big enough for the open water, and in order to be properly operated and maintained, they require a full-time captain and crew.
I have been fortunate to have spent weeks at a time on such motor-yachts, and had a taste of the lifestyle they afford their masters. In the immortal words of Ferris Bueller, “If you have the means, I highly recommend picking one up” A superyacht, for the un-initiated, is any yacht that measures over 24 meters. This would mean that you need a bigger house if you plan to keep it in your garage in the off-season.
Superyachts are fairly new in the Asian market. Despite some of the best yachting grounds on the planet, pleasure boating was virtually unheard of in Asia until about 10 years ago, having spent most of the previous century as the hallmark luxury in the Americas and the Mediterranean. A new generation of wealthy Asians has been spending big money on real estate, jets and cars as well as luxury items for the home and high fashion and couture at an unprecedented rate. The ability for the Asian market to see the objects of their desires via the internet, at a time where wealth is being created at such a rapid rate, leads to a strong market in luxury goods that kept more than a few companies alive and thriving while the Western economy declined.
If there were an off season…which there isn’t. The thing with Superyachts is that they are big enough for the open water, and in order to be properly operated and maintained, they require a full-time captain and crew. So if you are someplace where the season is ending, you just weigh the anchor and go to the next hot-spot.
While it was only a matter of time before the massive wealth being produced in China led to more yachting, it is the sudden influx of yachts in an area with too few marinas – especially deep water marinas – that has produced a shortage of safe moorings for these beautiful behemoths.
Actually, you tend to your affairs for a few days or weeks, and your crew cruises to the new hot-spot so the yacht is waiting for you when you fly in on your private jet. But that’s a different article.

truth. When you think about the amount of jobs that charters, fueling, provisioning, crew placements, cleaning, refitting and repair creates for a local economy, one eco-friendly marina can easily contribute $30M USD to a local economy annually, just by providing services for two dozen superyachts per year. And New Yacht Haven design and construction consistently proves that a marina can be built and run in an eco-friendly way that will enhance the area and protect nearby areas from any harm, making them more beneficial to the environment than if they hadn’t been built.
Tomorrow’s Asian marinas will prove to be technologically advanced, ecologically beneficial yacht havens, that contribute more to the environment and the local culture than they take away. This shortage creates several challenges that the industry faces in the emerging markets in Asia because the new marinas that are going to be built in Asia will have to do much more than just be floating parking lots for the toys of the rich and famous. Tomorrow’s Asian marinas will prove to be technologically advanced, ecologically beneficial yacht havens, that contribute more to the environment and the local culture than they take away. It is amazing to think of the amount of revenue a properly designed, built and managed marina can bring in when in the hands of seasoned professionals.
Yacht havens are where superyachts can be berthed and provisioned. This is no small thing, when you consider that a 30 plus meter yacht will often employ a crew of more than 20 and has to be stocked and ready to serve 3 meals a day to the crew, plus any guests that the owner and his family choose to invite along, and there are always guests; it’s half the fun of owning a yacht, being able to show it off. Another challenge is the design preference of Asian yacht owners, compared to their Western counterparts. Where I might like a 5 stateroom yacht that can sleep twelve plus crew, and live on it for 2 or 4 months a year and travel 2,000 miles or more on it, a Chinese businessman might keep it in the harbor, never leave
Most people think of marinas as dirty, bilge-water ridden, blemishes on coastlines that do nothing for the surrounding area but pollute the water for the benefit of “fat cats,” yet nothing could be further from the

the dock, and scrap the staterooms in favor of a karaoke room and Mah Jong parlor. Plus a conference/dining room with seating for 24! This makes the designers and architects a little crazy, and it might also come back to haunt the buyer when he tries to sell this $15M custom yacht in the open market, and receives a fraction of what he paid for it. The next big challenge the industry faces is creating a cohesive system of laws and regulations that makes cruising through Asia more pleasure than effort. That is not currently the case. Most countries have onerous rules that clamp down on things like visiting crew visas, charter laws for foreign flagged vessels, and customs. In most countries, you cannot let your yacht be chartered out for money, unless that yacht is registered (flagged) in that country. This creates some potentially significant difficulties for foreign owners, who like to offset the costs of yacht ownership with an occasional charter. Asian charter numbers are strong, a 30 meter superyacht might charter for $100,000 or more for one week.
lobby governments, provide solutions for international maritime problems, and help create a cohesive Asian superyacht market to protect and nurture the most spectacular cruising grounds on Earth? I think they will, and I look forward to being on the front lines during this most exciting time in the world of superyachts.
At long last, superyachts have arrived in Asia. The tide is coming in and raising all ships with it. All indicators are that those ships, and the wealthy that own them, will keep rising for the foreseeable future. The real question is this: Will the Superyacht community pull together to

or the past two decades, Boathouse has been the sanctuary of culinary excellence on the picturesque southern end of Kata beach. It was designed for those who didn’t like staying in traditional hotels and were looking for a more personalized service. Boathouse Wine & Grill was the first restaurant on Phuket to win the Wine Spectator Award, and is said to have been responsible for introducing the art of drinking good wine to the island. Now that it has had a change of ownership and undergone a face-lifting renovation. I checked into discover how the past was being treasured as they sail into the future.

I was met at the Phuket Airport by the resort’s representative, and the drive to Boathouse took about an hour. Returning after a decade, the external image remains familiar, but when I got inside the new look was a comfortable modern chic. Check-in is casual, minimal and effective; I just had to sit at a business desk for no more than 30 seconds to sign the registration form as all the other necessary information was on file. Through an access controlled door runs a corridor from the lobby at one end and direct access to the new beach club RE KA TA at the other.

My ground floor beach access room again reflects a new look for Boathouse; yacht sail white walls, wooden floors, sandy beige interiors accentuated with navy blue capture the spirit of the surrounding beach environment. No matter how excellent the level of service we have privacy moments when we just want to make tea or coffee and indulge in personal time. My room not only had a coffee maker but also a kettle and tea pot for a fresh brew. The lockable patio door gave me not only access to the beach but also a direct route to the restaurant. Thought had clearly gone into not only guests’ physical comfort but also ease of their mobility. Boathouse’s change of ownership came about as M.L. Tidhosuyth Devakul, better known as Montri, (soon to be 70 years old) felt it was time for him to retire and dispose of some of his Phuket assets. In Narong Pattarmasaevi, Chairman of Montra Holdings Co. Ltd. owner of the luxury development Trisara, he found a buyer who shared his vision for the future development of Boathouse.
My ground floor beach access room again reflects a new look for Boathouse; yacht sail white walls, wooden floors, sandy beige interiors accentuated with navy blue capture the spirit of the surrounding beach environment. Bali based French designer Fredo Taffin, the architect of KU DE TA, was engaged to rejuvenate the resort combining existing classical architectural symmetry with modern chic giving a more contemporary overall feel. The result is a new modern open kitchen that was installed with the Captain’s Table in front. Oasis was converted into the über chic beach club RE KA TA with a spa, large boutique, and a gourmet café; mission accomplished in impeccable style. Boathouse Wine & Grill has tables either out on the terrace or in the main dining room. I decided to sit inside. With the glass panel doors open, the setting was perfect; I had air-conditioned comfort compliments of the ocean breeze. The sound of waves crashing on the beach while looking out on the floodlit palm trees that fringe the beach. My table was laid with a full length silver cloth overlaid by a smaller gold cloth set on the diagonal. to black. Having placed my order the waiter changed the cutlery appropriate to the three dishes. For my starter, I had two generous sized slices of foie gras perfectly cooked, served on a bed of pan-fried chanterelle mushrooms with a balanced vintage port sauce. The plate was garnished with a dusting of chanterelle mushrooms at the four corners to balance the presentation. My bottle of mineral water was on ice throughout the meal to maintain the right temperature, only a slice of lemon was added to my glass. Risotto is a dish demanding culinary precision; their black truffle risotto was faultless. The rice was al dente with a generous amount of black truffle.
With my espresso, I thought the choice of either brown or white sugar cubes a touch of class enriched by a plate of four petit, pink and white marshmallow dark chocolate truffles, coconut biscuit and a strawberry tartlet. With my espresso, I thought the choice of either brown or white sugar cubes a touch of class enriched by a plate of four petit, pink and white marshmallow dark chocolate truffles, coconut biscuit and a strawberry tartlet. After dinner, Executive Chef Jean-Noel Lumineau, the only Maitre Cuisineur de France in Phuket, joined me at the table. He came to Phuket in September 2008 as a consultant chef for all four of Montri’s restaurants; he was appointed Executive Chef in November 2010. “I am a classic chef; always wanting to work with the best produce I can find and will always use Thai produce when they meet my expectations. The majority of our meats come from Australia, but I do order lamb and duck products from France,” Jean-Noel said. We were then joined by George Ciret, Director of Wine. “I joined the team in 2003. The 2004 tsunami swept away 60% of our total wine stock. We rebuilt and restocked sufficiently to win Wine Spectator’s Best Award of Excellence in 2006. The latest renovations gave us the show wine cellar in the restaurant and another two cellars to store 780 labels. As we serve a lot of fish and seafood we are pouring 65% white wines, which is the opposite of Thailand’s overall pro-red preference.” The sound of crashing waves was my wake up call. of Wine and Grill onto the ocean’s beautiful range of turquoise tones of the ocean. Breakfast is served on the terrace directly above the beach; all cooked items are a la cart. I opted for a robust eggs benedict served with quality bacon, sausage and grilled tomato. What a perfect start to the day. Looking out onto the tranquil Kata Bay, earlier risers were already on the beach, long-tail boats with colourful flags flying ready to take tourists to explore the island, gentle waves lapping at the shore. At mid-morning, I dropped by Cafe Richard for a scoopof caramel Movenpick ice cream and a perfectly extracted cappuccino For lunch I went to RE KA TA to taste Chef Brian Burger’s Living Cuisine menu. “Living Cuisine suits the beach lifestyle,” says Chef Brian. “I use a lot of local ingredients, especially seafood which I cook at low temperatures to maintain taste and texture integrity. I substitute zucchini for wheat in my spaghetti which I slice as thin as wire, soften with lime and salt. I then refresh the pasta in an ice water bath. My sauces have ground young coconut and a macadamia base to which I add the likes of sun-dried tomato and sweet corn. My lasagna is made with wafer thin sliced zucchini with a rich earthy walnut paste. phuket health & fitness festival P
huket’s very first Health & Fitness Festival was held on the weekend of May 11 – 13 in the beautiful south-east of the island. An initiative of the Rawai NaiHarn group, the festival was hosted at 3 resorts and featured a number of speakers, activities, classes and events.
of Representatives Khun Raywat Areerob agreed to officiate at the festival opening party at the Mangosteen Resort.
With speakers from six different countries and presentations including; organic cooking classes, eye yoga, hard-core training, busting negative health habits, and the theory of meditation, festival attendees were well served with a broad range of seminars and interactive classes.
Spokesperson for the festival, Mr. Michael Massey, President of the Rawai NaiHarn group, was delighted with the success of the event. “We have had attendances beyond our expectations and the feedback from all festival ticket holders has been overwhelmingly positive”, he stated.
Keynote speaker at the festival was Dr. John Hinwood of Australia who spoke on the Miracle Mindset. A highly successful Chiropractor for over 30 years, Dr. Hinwood is in high demand throughout Australasia as a presenter, speaker and motivator. He declares that a key component to health and fitness is equipping yourself with the correct mindset in order to attain optimal health, and sets about delivering steps to achieving this mindset.
Mr. Massey gave praise to the sponsors of the event and expressed his gratitude for their invaluable support in backing the first edition of what is planned to become an annual event. “It takes courage to make a commercial commitment to a new event, and we are extremely grateful to the Phuket Gazette, Phuket FM Radio 91.5FM, and Pura Organics for the part they have played in its success.
With three doctors on the program as well as numerous certified experts in their fields, attendees were able to draw on a vast array of knowledge and experience, as well enjoy some hands-on classes including a very popular session on Indian Head Massage.
Organizers were pleasantly surprised to receive support from another quarter, when Phuket MP for the House

As creators and promoters of the event, the Rawai NaiHarn group utilized the festival as an opportunity to showcase some of their member businesses. Established in 2011 the Rawai NaiHarn group is an affiliation of local businesses who work collaboratively to promote the south-east corner of Phuket and business in this area. Member businesses hosted most of the activities and classes, including the Media Launch and Opening Party at the Mangosteen Resort, and a highly enjoyable Pool Party at the Serenity Terraces Resort & Residences. The Mangosteen Resort created a series of non-alcoholic cocktails under the supervision of Dr Subash, their resident Ayurvedic doctor, as well as providing organic hors d’oeuvres, a delicious selection of organic dishes for dinner, and excellent entertainment. After the Mangosteen Resort set a high standard with an enjoyable opening party, on Saturday evening it was the chance for Serenity Terraces to display their ability to host an excellent Pool Party, and they did not disappoint. General Manager Mr. Urs Aebi was clearly very happy with the success of the sell-out party which attracted residents and visitors from all across the island.

time, is as important to health and fitness as your regular exercise.”
In closing our interview Mr. Massey made the following points, “Health & Fitness never diminishes in importance, from time to time it becomes more or less fashionable, but ultimately we all recognize the importance of taking better care of ourselves. The desire to live an active and meaningful life is a driver for most people, and the knowledge of how to remain fit and healthy in order to best enjoy a long and active life is information of value to all of us. Our hope is that this festival continues to benefit not only the local participating businesses, but equally importantly, our local community and the visitors to our area.

Pricing is also very competitive for this type of luxurious, fully managed development. The project offers a range of great accommodation options where investors can take full advantage of owning quality beach real estate at sensible prices. Are there any special offers available for early bird buyers? There are some excellent offers for all investor types, with 49% foreign ownership quota still available. The Absolute World Group will offer a 6% rental guarantee over 3 years to buyers that wish to enter the rental scheme. The Absolute World Group have achieved great success in this area through their Resorts & Hotels brand and successful Destination Club and I understand they secured over 70,000 room nights last year in Phuket. There are also some fabulous furniture packages available to buyers that want to take up this option. You sound very confident in this project K Suphin? We are extremely confident in this project due to its many strong points as I have mentioned. We are also confident in the developer. The Absolute World Group has a very strong market profile and track record. Opening its doors this Summer, Phase one of Absolute Twin Sands is just about to hand over units to its owners and is a prime example. The project sold out in record time.
Thailand. We believe this alliance will truly help boost buyer confidence in Absolute Twin Sands Phase 2 and 3, ensuring the success of the project.
Would you like to give our readers a quick overview of your operations? Jones Lang LaSalle has been in Thailand since 1990 and today is the largest international property services firm in the Kingdom. We have three corporate offices in Bangkok, Phuket and Pattaya, over 1,100 staff and more than 5 million square meters of property managed.
What would you say makes Absolute Twin Sands phases 2 and 3 an interesting development for potential buyers? There are a many good things about Absolute Twin Sands that spring to my mind. One is the location. The project is built on a peninsula, just a few minutes walk to two beautiful beaches in Phuket’s main resort town of Patong. It is rare to find other developments that can boast this. The project is located on the southern part of Patong Bay, away from the bustling crowds on the main beach, leaving the owners to relax on secluded golden sand with friends and family.
We opened our office in Phuket in late 2007. We now have a portfolio of 19 luxury residential estates managed and have become the largest international property management service provider on the island. These include a number of high-profile developments such as Malaiwana Villas, The Villas at Cape Yamu, Absolute Bangla Suites, Absolute Nakalay Beach and most recently Absolute Twin Sands.
Another strong point is the combination of vibrant and modern design with consciously developed aspects such as energy efficient lighting, green replanting and water filtration and as much locally sourced materials as would allow, capturing the best elements of resort living whilst being sustainably focused.

After 4 years in Phuket, we decided to launch the residential project sales business in Phuket earlier this year. We are very pleased to have Absolute Twin Sands Phase 2 and 3 in our portfolio of Lead agency assignments and we are confident the project will be received well.
