t’s that time again. Whether you choose to call it July/August or summer, the season is upon us! School is on its way out, persons will be vacationing within and out of the country and a host of party and concert experiences will be unleashed on an eagerly awaiting population. Three of these events have managed to maintain and increase their followings as well as evolve and innovate their brands. Hennessy Artistry’s Reggae on the Bay, TAO and Sandbox Entertainment’s Great Fete Weekend are scheduled to rule the summer. We are here to do what we do best which is to prepare you for the entertainment! The action starts with TAO (Together As One). This event carded for July 14th kicks off the summer at the O2 Park Chaguaramas. As one, persons will party to the live music of Iwer George, Erphaan Alves, Lady Lava, Prince Swanny, rising Jamaican artiste Masicka and the ‘Unruly Boss’ himself Jamaican dancehall star, Popcaan. This event is known for blending genres and as usual it incorporates a nice mix of local and regional acts. Great Fete Weekend continues the action as it brings the concert experience to the sister isle. It is an exciting off-spring of the Tobago Great Race boating competition and has amassed a huge following as well as the status of being one
of the Caribbean’s most enjoyable and consistently sought after Summer experiences! Over the period July 25th to 29th ‘Great Feters’ will be treated to 5 nights of parties inclusive of 4 live shows and 3 beach parties. It all begins with a welcome party at the Shade Nightclub and ends with an event themed ‘Summer Callalloo’ – a paint, powder and water infused jump up/after party, which closes the experience on July 29th. There will be no time for breathers in between with Reggae Thursdays on the 26th, which features Jamaican artiste I Wayne and local acts Isasha, Jae Prynse and Fire Empress Jalifa. Then there is Soca Glow on the 27th with Soca stars Shal Marshall, Nessa Preppy, Iwer George, Dev, Turner, The A Team Band, Salty, Benjai, DJ Puffy and Adana all primed to blaze up the stage! Wet Fete, one of the biggest stage nights, will see Jamaican artistes Aidonia, Teejay and Grammy award winner, rapper, reality star and actor T.I grace the stage. On the choice of T.I this year, Event PRO Adana Asson said, “T.I’s persona, catalogue and reputation captured our attention. In everything that we do at Sandbox HD we like to ensure that there are various acts with differing appeal. T.I has been around for quite some time. He is well-respected and is a Grammy-award winning artiste.”
The team credits their ability to keep the concept fresh and attractive to simply paying attention to trends. For instance, since 2015, ‘Great Feters’ have been introduced to an application which is a one stop shop for all related information and is available for both Apple and android users. Apart from ticket sales and venues the application provides information on accommodation, transportation, tours as well as services related to local entrepreneurs and stakeholders. According to Asson, “This is very important to us as it's one of the fundamental principles within our mandate which is to always promote local.” So of course download the Great Fete Weekend app and follow the event on twitter @iamgreatfete or Instagram: Great Fete Weekend so that you don't miss out on all the greatness that will be this epic weekend! There is also a buzz surrounding this year’s edition of Reggae on the Bay. This themed event which started in 2008, is in its fourth year of partnership with Hennessy Artistry and on July 29th will feature eighttime Grammy Award winner Stephen Marley along with Jamaican Dancehall veteran Shabba Ranks. The brand, which ultimately aims to provide a stage for local acts will also showcase Ataklan, Jimmy October, Jay Naghe, The Writer and
Pternsky. According to Kafele Crichton, Hennessy Brand Manager, the decision to take the event back to O2 Park Chaguaramas was guided by a desire to create a more intimate concert atmosphere for patrons, “We felt that the luxury concert experience that Hennessy Artistry is known for was better suited at O2 Park.” The venue, billed as the largest amphitheater in the country, boasts a scenic waterfront, plush greenery and will be specially outfitted with air-conditioned restroom facilities and pre constructed bars and food courts. Crichton explained how the event has managed to maintain the hype, “The brand was conceptualized with ‘premium’ as the key objective! On top of the fact that we do not repeat the same artistes annually so the experience is always a different one.” Neither of the Jamaican based international acts has performed on the same stage together nor have they ever been to O2 Park. This promises to be a treat to patrons! For more information visit the Facebook Event Page or www.ticketgateway.com So there you have it! You have been informed. Of course these are only three of many open-air type events scheduled to go down within the next few months. Choose wisely and party responsibly. Happy Summer!

S-based travel agent Juliana Fermin’s extraordinary Soca On The Seas concept has proven to be a massive boost for the culture as well as an epic travel/entertainment experience for patrons since its inception in 2016. Fermin was able to collaborate with renowned cruise line Royal Caribbean to facilitate the popular event which continues to grow. Previously a three day event, the cruise is now five days long and features premium talent to go along with premium travel experiences aboard top of the line vessels. Previously, the party trip took place from Miami to the Baha-
mas. However, it has expanded to include various incarnations to the lineup such as this year’s European and upcoming Chutney cruises. The main addition will undoubtedly be the newest one which will see an African cruise
headed to Dubai in 2019. Next year, Soca on the Seas will introduce the Dubai One Love Music Festival At Sea as it makes its maiden voyage to the United Arab Emirates. That event is carded to follow in the
footsteps of 2018’s upcoming Afro Soca edition. Afrobeat artists will join the world’s best soca and dancehall ambassadors aboard one of Royal Caribbean’s most luxurious vessels, the MSC Splendida. As previously stated, before the UAE trip, there will be a Chutney cruise to end this year. This November event will shine a light on the region’s top chutney artistes aboard the spanking new Symphony of the Seas ship. It sails from Miami to Cozumel, Mexico just one week after Divali. MISS WORLD TT AIMS TO BE
MORE THAN A PAGEANT IN 2018 Written by Daniela Nandlal
B
eautiful, intelligent and graceful are just some of the words that can be used to describe this year’s Miss World delegates. In fact, the delegates include two open scholarship winners, two lawyers, a national athlete, an award-winning filmmaker and two teachers. In speaking with Dr. Reiaz Mohammed, Co- pageant Director for Miss World he divulged that this year’s final show which will be held on Sunday 5th August at NAPA would be like no other. Mohammed said “we have assembled a dynamic team of professionals who are aimed at producing an event that is at an international level. From the moment the show begins patrons can expect for their senses to be amazed by the beauty, the colours and the sounds of Trinidad and Tobago.” Therefore, as part of the preparations for this event, the candidates have been undergoing a rigorous training regime. They have about 5 training sessions per week in addition to social engagements. Mohammed explained that the training is aimed at developing each delegate to make them better prepared to become the leaders of tomorrow. “Training sessions include etiquette, social skills, voice training, protocol, makeup, hair, walking, self-confidence, history, and culture of Trinidad and Tobago. It is a very hectic schedule, but at the end of the competition although only one girl will represent Trinidad & Tobago at the Miss World Competition, every girl must feel that they are a better person because of the experience.” Pageant experts have also stated that this is the strongest batch of delegates that Trinidad and Tobago have seen in decades. However, the not so pleasant side of the being a candidate can result in facing harsh criticism online since the internet can sometimes be a vessel to channel this type of negativity. ET&T sought to find out what the approach is in dealing with such situations. What we were able to find out 6
was the organization has a zerotolerance policy against bullying, whether it be online or in person. Furthermore, comments that are disrespectful to the delegates are immediately removed and persons that make these comments are blocked on all the organization’s social media platforms. Additionally, there are also training sessions to help the candidates deal with the psychological aspects of the pageantry of which cyberbullying is a key aspect. When asked what is the most important quality for a candidate to possess Mohammed said it is the ability for her to be true to herself. He further explained by saying “be proud of who you are and do not pretend to be like anyone else. There is no mold that a delegate must fit into. She needs only to be confident in who she is as a woman in today’s world.” As for the judges, while he did not reveal who they were, he did

say that it would be a large panel of diverse individuals who are suited to picking the best delegate to represent Trinidad & Tobago. The panel comprises of professionals, experts in the beauty industry, pageant experts and local and international celebrities. With all the preparation going into this event, we had to find out what the response from the public has been like thus far and it appears that the stakeholders are not the only ones excited about this year’s competition. Mohammed said “we have seen a renewed interest in Trinidad and Tobago pageantry. We have been flooded with positive feedback and we are humbled by the support that we have received from the public. I think that everyone is excited to see Trinidad and Tobago as a front-runner in international pageantry once more.” This statement was further reinforced by some of the comments posted on the event’s Fa-
cebook page. Niaalia Khan said “looking forward!!!” While Jenny Mansoor “Would not miss it for the World! Excitiiinnngg!” and Peter Sheppard said “Looking forward to seeing these delegates.” In Dr. Mohammed’s final comment in speaking with us, he said “this is not a beauty pageant. This is a competition to choose a representative for brand Trinidad & Tobago. It is an avenue to empower young women to make them the leaders of tomorrow. It is about charity and using this platform to change the world....to make a difference.” The event will be held at NAPA, Port of Spain and the cost of general tickets will be $350. While as VIP will be $550. For more information on this event and to stay up to date with the competition, be sure to check out their Facebook page or follow them on Instagram @ttmissworld.

SIZZLA UNDER ATTACK BY LBGTQ COMMUNITY AGAIN Dancehall artiste Sizzla Kalonji has fallen under the baleful radar of gay rights groups once again. The singer's July 13 concert, organized by the Mateel Community Center in northern California, has been cancelled. Board member of the Mateel Community Garth Epling stated that his executive was split on the matter.
“The majority of us decided that we should listen to our membership and our community. We are in a struggling financial state. We see the potential for another money-making show, but I don't think it's really worth it. And as a community centre, we can't stand behind that,” Epling is quoted as saying. Reports indicate that people who have purchased tickets for the cancelled event will be refunded. Meanwhile, the gay rights advocates are lauding the decision by Mateel to pull Sizzla, whose given name is Miguel Collins. Todd Larsen, founder of the Queer Humboldt group, said he and his colleagues are grateful. “We really appreciate the board of Mateel listening to our community and adhering to their mission statement of embracing diversity.” Gay rights groups have attempted to sabotage reggae acts who they claim espouse hate speech and anti-gay sentiments. Her present involvement in the Anti Bullying Association of Trinidad and Tobago (ABATT) proves how much she cares for her fellow man. As far as her modeling is concerned, she Faith has been in the game for just under two years and has already made major moves. This is especially respectable in a country that usually promotes stagnancy in her field. So far this brown beauty has worked with photographers such as Da-

The soon to be modeling titan from Toco has been featured in ads for highly respected beauty/fashion retail brand Wonderful World. As far as runway, Walcott definitely has the body to do justice to most designs. In fact, she has done shoots for several designers, some of which have previously been featured in our pages. While she does not have a favourite, Faith does give love o many of the local names making strides such as Okera designs ,Bikini Heatz , DaniLUVko-

When asked how she maintains her model figure says it is all about her diet. “I eat very little portions and I always have a balanced meal (e.g. oatmeal with fruits on the side).” She also says she drinks a lot of water which helps her stay hydrated enough when she does her full body workouts every day. As far as cosmetic or beauty treatments, Faith is #teamnatural. “I only use natural products on my face like coconut oil, Shea butter.” One look at her skin would tell you it works well for her. One look at her future and you might need some shades. It seems bright indeed.

Peep the interview and get to more about Ashana as we go beyond her famous booty. ET&T: Can you tell us a bit about yourself/your story, how you developed an interest in music, and why you decided to launch an Instagram account? Ashana: I am a songwriter/ singer/model/rapper that in the recent years has become a growing entity in the entertainment business. My passion has always been music since the age of 12. I don’t only rap, but as I mentioned earlier I am a singer as well. So I dabble in pop, EDM and many other genres. As for launching my Instagram account, it was always a means of promoting my brand/ name Ashana Finesse, thus getting my music and modeling to a wider audience. Ashana: If I had to state one way that social media most changed my life it would be the fact that my music and modeling have reached people and places that I never thought possible. ET&T: What two pieces of advice would you give to someone interested in starting their own Instagram account that sought to gain a large following? Ashana: 1. Be the best version of you. 2. Don’t go into it just for the purpose of a large following. Do something you love or are passionate about. ET&T: In the next five years, how do you hope @ashana_01 grows and develops? Ashana: Believe it or not, my first album was Britney Spears – Oops!... I Did It Again. I begged my parents to purchase the original copy. ET&T: What song is stuck in your head these days? Ashana: I did a remix to Migos – Motorsport with known Hip Hop Group, Sovereignty. Titled ‘PaperChase' and that’s been stuck in my head. And the official video is out for that, be sure to check it out. ET&T: Musically, what are your biggest influences and who are your favourite musicians? Ashana: As for influences: Nicki Minaj, Britney Spears, R. City, Sovereignty, Fred The Godson, Rihanna, (Uk Artists) Chip, Dappy & Lady Leshurr just to name a few. My favourite Musicians and musical influences go hand in hand. After being around Sovereignty for quite some time my skillset for wordplay, bars and metaphors, songwriting in general tremendously advanced. ET&T: Who’s your fashion icon and why? Ashana: Honestly, I don’t have a fashion icon. I more stand by if you personally like It, then WEAR IT. ET&T: What do you think of the hip-hop scene in T&T? Ashana: My honest opinion is, there really isn’t a hip-hop scene in T&T. Unfortunately, Trinidad is a soca-based country. Hence, other genres tend to get stifled. We have a long way to go. ET&T: Where is your dream venue to perform at? Ashana: Onstage at the Billboard Awards. www.amgtt.com •

ET&T EVENTS
The event was touted as a step toward the mammoth rejuvenation of true dancehall and reggae vibes in T&T and it turned out to be exactly as advertised. The legendary Barrington Levy opened the show followed by Sizzla Kalongi, Capleton and Busy Signal. A host of local acts were interspersed throughout, most notably Orlando Octave making an appearance during Sizzla’s set. Speaking of Sizzla, he rallied through with a strong performance despite minor technical difficulties. A few Platinum VIP ticket holders expressed dissatisfaction over the food and drinks on hand, but that could not damper what was overall a terrific show. Inferno brought the large-scale open air concert vibe that has been lacking for some time back to our shores and we were there for the action.

However, this event was usually held at Salybia and switched to the island’s opposite coast for the first time. As such, the change saw the number of patrons drop, but the vibes didn’t. The Prezidential promo girls kept the shots flowing and no cooler was left with contents inside when the party was over. DIATONIC PAN INSTITUTE PRESENTS CHAI KAN
A TAIWAN FAREWELL CONCERT
or almost a decade the Diatonic Pan Institute has been working to equip Trinbago’s youth with essential skills in the Arts while taking our culture throughout the globe. While noble, this feat is F far from cheap and the institution regularly hosts fundraising initiatives to assist in their endeavours. Most recently, Diatonic hosted a cultural show featuring the talents of their pan/dance ensemble and a host of A-List calypso and soca stars. The proceeds went toward taking the youth involved to Taiwan. The show was of the regular high quality one would come to expect from the Siparia-based collective and ET&T was pleased to be a part of the proceedings.
