eing true Caribbean culture aficionados, it would be remiss of us at ET&T to not share the beauty of Carnival with you our readers. It was truly a period of excitement replete with headlines. We witnessed the ups and downs of our favourite celebrities and we rallied behind those iconic figures as they did their parts in leaving indelible marks on T&T’s entertainment landscape. We need not look farther than the incidents involving TUCO and PanTrinbago, as well as the long-awaited Machel Montano and Ian ‘Bunji Garlin’ Alvarez collaboration for evidence of this. Also, as is regrettably the norm around this time, we lost yet another prominent figure in our cultural landscape. Claudette Blackman, the wife of the inventor of Soca Garfield Blackman (a.k.a Lord Shorty) and member of the iconic Love Circle succumbed to illness. I would like to send out my condolences to the family and friends of the Blackmans. With that said, you can appreciate all that makes Carnival the greatest spectacle on earth within these pages. Enjoy 72 Pages of Carnival in all its Glory. There are 35 pages of Monday & Tuesday action, 10 pages of jouvert and 20 fetes being featured in on magnificent magazine. What makes this even more special is these priceless memories are available to you without a price. We are happy to still be the ONLY FREE Carnival Glossy Magazine and we proudly continue to offer our readers world class quality FREE! FREE! FREE! Enjoy! .

WINNER’S

ROW After last year’s frenetic short season, all stakeholders seemed overly thrilled to have a full season of fetes, soca and more. Despite the pace there were some things that slowed down. The tempo of music for one continued to drop with Dubstep and EDM-laced musical inflections dominating airwaves. In fact, a true mid-tempo track ran away with this year’s Road March. However, this year was as wide open in terms of competition as anyone could guess. Leading up to the Panorama, International Soca Monarch, Calypso Monarch and Chutney Monarch it seemed as though anyone could come out victorious in their respective competitions. In the end, familiar faces reigned with a few new 16

people emerging for good measure. There was also a fair share of controversy related to this year’s competitive proceedings, but all in all the judges were allowed to have the last say. Here are some of the people who stand proud in Winner’s Row. CARNIVAL BAND OF THE YEAR – Ronnie & Caro (Fearless 10) CARNIVAL KING –Ted Eustace ('Crypto '- Lord of the Galaxy)

POLITICAL COMMENTARY – Maria Bhola La Caille (My First Lady) SOCIAL COMMENTARY – Terri Lyons (The Phrase) HUMOROUS CALYPSO – Myron Bruce – (More Mad Than Me) INTERNATIONAL SOCA MONARCH – Voice (Far From Finished)

CARNIVAL QUEEN – Krystal Thomas (De Nebula)

CHUTNEY SOCA MONARCH – Omardath Maharaj / Ravi B – (Ramsingh / Budget)

CALYPSO MONARCH – Hollis ‘Chalkdust’ Liverpool (Learn From Arithmetic)

PANORAMA CHAMPS (Large) – Massy All Stars (Full Extreme)

YOUNG KING – Rohan ‘Fireball’ Richards (Calypso Music) CALYPSO QUEEN – Sasha Ann Moses (The Main Witness) EXTEMPO MONARCH – Winston ‘Gypsy’ Peters

PANORAMA CHAMPS (Medium) – Pan Elders ("Roti") PANORAMA CHAMPS (Small) – LH Pan Groove (In De Minor) ROAD MARCH CHAMPION – The Ultimate Rejects featuring MX Prime (Full Extreme)

The Season’s Top Talking Points

A

mid all the revelry and constant carefree behavior that constantly permeate Carnival, there were some moments that made us pause and ponder if only for a split second. These headlining moments will stand out after the snake oil has washed down the drains and we get ready for carnival again. Here are some of 2017’s biggest stories in no particular order. MACHEL + BUNJI It would be remiss of us to go any further on this list without acknowledging that the biggest moment of the season was when Machel Montano and Bunji Garlin put their differences aside to finally collaborate on a massive track. The roar was deafening when both artistes stepped on stage for the first time together at Soaka. Montano and Alvarez had previously been at odds with Bunji accusing Machel of "playing politics" to win the 2011 Power Soca Monarch title. Both artistes famously threw lyrical barbs at each other during that year’s Soca Monarch competition with Montano eventually emerging victorious. Many fans and artistes alike praised the collaboration. Local musical legend Roy Cape described the song as www.amgtt.com

a “message of healing” and expressed that it felt “fantastic” to be able to witness this moment in our country’s cultural history. The jouvert favourite ironically entitled Buss Head is an ode to the ancient African tradition of Kalinda and was composed by the two artistes in tandem with young writing and production teams AdvoKit Productions & Badjohn Republic. CHALKIE CHALKS UP WIN NUMBER 9 Dr. Hollis Liverpool, otherwise known as the Mighty Chalkdust, became the winningest calypsonian of all time as he sang his way to a 9th Calypso Monarch title. The bard broke a tie with Slinger ‘The Mighty Sparrow’ Francisco on Dimanche Gras night with his equal parts humour and social commentary song “Learn From Arithmetic” which took on the issue of child marriage. Chalkdust intimated that he asked for Sparrow’s blessing before pursuing the recordbreaking victory. DIMANCHE GRAS DEBACLE Speaking of things Dimanche Gras, to call this year’s show a farce is to sugar coat it to the point of diabetic coma-inducing pro-

portions. Apart from an unspectacular stage and lighting setup, the show was poorly coordinated with several glaring mishaps occurring during the second half of the programme. Despite boasting a cast which included Bunji Garlin, MX Prime and strangely Terri Lyons – who was a competitor – on the night, the show was in absolute shambles which lead many to leave the venue even before getting the results. There was a lull of over an hour where not even the MC’s came to the stage. NCC chief Kenny Da Silva made a public apology for the shows proceedings which he said were “marred by technical difficulties throughout.” Veteran media personality Dale Enoch decried the events on his morning I95.5fm programme and posited his view that the producers should not be hired in that capacity again. FULL EXTREME CLAIMS ROAD MARCH RECORD The Ultimate Rejects released ‘Full Extreme’ on December 5th 2016 and the song quickly grew into a monster catapulting the group led by Edghill ‘MX Prime’ Thomas to a Road March title. The song’s popularity could not be denied throughout the season and it quickly became the basis for several CARNIVAL 2017 ET&T

19

C2K16’S TOP TALKING POINTS social media memes. By the time the Carnival parade ended, ‘Full Extreme’ eclipsed Superblue’s previous record of 511 plays with the song being jammed 556 times at various judging points. Despite the large margin of victory, Thomas remained humble and dedicated the victory to “his son and the almighty” saying he “didn’t make music to compete.” Compete or not, people were glad this gem was released as it ensured no matter what happened for Carnival they would be Jamming Still.

seemed strange as over the years Garlin has been known for donning such accessories which were in line with his “Desperado” theme. Some argued that Fazeer –who is Muslim- of all people, should not condemn Bunji for wearing a mask since people around the world cover their faces for various reasons. It was merely in line with a stage persona. Many came out in support by attending events and posting photos of themselves with their faces covered in a similar fashion.

RAVI B AND RAYMOND RAMNARINE END UP IN RUMOURVILLE Ramnarine received a Lifetime Achievement Award at Chutney Brass and during a later performance shared with the audience that a fellow artiste wished death on him. Ramnarine paused during his act to say “Tonight an artist wished that I was dead. Envy and hate exist in our industry, sadly. But you know what? I will wish him happiness” before asking the audience to help him pray for the individual. Somehow word spread that Chutney Titan Ravi B was the artiste who wished death on the Dil E Nadan star. However both Ravi B and Raymond Ramnarine denied the allegations at various junctures before the artistes met on 103fm to quash the rumours for good.

KAISO IN COURT In more beef news, there was much hullabaloo leading up to Dimanche Gras night as one bunch of controversy found itself all the way in court. Lynette ‘Lady Gypsy’ Steele threatened to sue TUCO for only making it to the Calypso Monarch finals as a reserve even though she shared the same points total as finalist Anthony “All Rounder” Hendrickson. Lornette ‘Fya Empress’ Nedd's eligibility was also called into question in a letter by Steele’s attorney Gerald Ramdeen. Nedd is Vincentian, despite living in Tobago for over 15 years and previously being married to a Trinbagonian. TUCO disqualified her under pressure from Lady Gypsy before opting to reinstate her and have both perform as finalists. Both eventual winner Chalkdust and fellow calypsonian/TUCO representative Ras Kommander referred to the drama as “a potentially vital learning experience moving forward.”

BUNJI VS FAZEER Fazeer Mohammed drew the ire of artistes and fans alike when he insinuated that Bunji Garlin was “glorifying banditry” by wearing a bandana over his face during a post-performance photo op. The comments

20

ET&T CARNIVAL 2017

PAN BACCHANAL It took a four-hour meeting at City Hall for a compromise to be reached between protesting pan players and the executive of Pan Trinbago. As seems to always be the case, transparency issues were cited as the main reason for the bacchanal as late and non-payment of pan players almost caused a boycott for the festival. Many called for the resignation of PanTrinbago head Keith Diaz, with renowned pannist Dane Gulston being one of the most vocal protestors. In the end, everything was able to proceed fairly smoothly for Panorama.

RECESSION SESSION While the lengthened season saw more fetes with the cost of fetes also rising, there seemed to be more patrons than ever at these parties. This made people wonder if there really was a recession. Now that Carnival is over, we are sure the reality will hit them. In any event, much of the major prizes were slashed for Carnival. The National Calypso Monarch prize was cut to $700,000 from last year’s million dollar prize. Similarly, the International Soca Monarch price was cut in half from last year’s million dollar prize. The Chutney Monarchs Ravi B and Omardath Maharaj had to share half a million dollars due to their first-place tie. ALBUM DE MUSIQUE DE MONDE FOR CALYPSO ROSE The “Album de Musique de Monde” (the French equivalent of a Grammy) was awarded to local icon Mc Cartha SandyLewis a.k.a. Calypso Rose on February 10th 2017. The 76 year old veteran declared herself “the Queen of France” after receiving the award from a country that has shown her tremendous love over the years. Rose copped the World Album of the Year award for her Far From Home album which was released in June 2016. The album features hit singles Leave Me Alone, Zoom Zoom Zoom and remakes of Abatina, Calypso Queen and others. The legend returned to Trinidad before the season was over where she performed in concert and was celebrated by many including Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley. www.amgtt.com

HYALURONIC ACID?

Hyaluronic acid (HA), naturally found in skin, is a powerful hydrator that holds up to 1,000 times its weight in water. It plays a critical role in keeping skin cells* hydrated and “plumped,” resulting in supple, youthful-looking skin. We lose Hyaluronic acid over time, but the added HA in Hydro Boost works to help keep skin hydrated and smooth, with a healthy-looking glow.
